Anger over Mandela

MOURNING ARMBANDS

>> Petrol attendants were allegedly threatened with disciplinary action should they refuse to wear the black clothes NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

S

OME city motorists have expressed anger over the wearing of black armbands by petrol attendants at a Caltex filling station in the city to mourn the passing of former President Nelson Mandela. It is alleged that attendants were forced to wear these black bands with a message that says ‘Salute

Madiba’, and had been wearing them since Monday last week. A person who alerted Echo aboutthispractisesaidthatheisnot against mourning for this global icon, butisagainstthepracticeitself as these are people from different religious and cultural backgrounds. “While his death is a loss to the nation and it is a good thing to mourn for his passing, the wearing of these arm bands should have

been optional. “In our culture when someone is given mourning clothes, there has to be a cleansing ceremony that has to be performed before they can take off the clothes. “Some families even slaughter goats as part of the cleansing ceremony, in this case who will perform the ritual?”, he asked. Another motorist who did not want to be identified said that her concernwasthatnotalltheemploy-

ees were happy to wear these armbands. “I spoke to one of them who told me that they were threatened with a disciplinary hearing if they refused to wear them. My concern is that these people come from different religious backgrounds, some do not wear anything as a symbol of mourning, but mourn by heart only. “In this case all of this was not considered”. WhenEchovisitedtheCaltexga-

rage in Armitage road last week, an employee who was reluctant to talk said that not all of them were happy with the decision, saying that the garage owner was not wearing one himself. Garage manager Venathan Reddysaid:“Wereceivedaninstruction from our head office to implement this practice, as it was a national campaign.Wedidnotmeantoshow any disrespect, but it was out of respect for this great man”.

>> Businesses and security companies have joined forces with police to deal with the crimes NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

THE South African Bank Risk Information Centre (Sabric), shopping retailers, banks and security companies will be working together in dealing with crime this festive season. Sabric CEO Kalyani Pillay confirmed to Echo that they will be taking part in the forum that was launched by KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Mmammonye Ngobeni in October. Kalyani said as the festive seasons draws closer, criminals get more ac-

tive as more opportunities present themselves during this spending spree period. She said it is is therefore important for business organisations to work closely with the police to create a safer and more secure environment, especially during this time of the year. The collaboration among the banks and the cash in transit (CIT) companies via Sabric, is a unique model that enables the effective partnership with law enforcement to fight crimes affecting these industries. “Sabric and its clients believe that fighting crime in the country is a col-

lective responsibility and for this reason they provide whatever support possible to ensure that crime is significantly reduced and eradicated where possible. Sabric’s clients are currently 14 banks, three in CIT companies and two ATM service providers. As part of the Sabric mandate, support is provided to the South African Police Service (SAPS) with their investigations and to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) with their prosecutions,” she said. In a statement by Colonel Jay Naicker it was mentioned that Ngobeni felt there was still an opportunity for

The statement said all parties elected not to point fingers but rather to work together to find solutions on how to deal with crimes affecting businesses. It says the forum was formed consisting of SAPS, Business against Crime, Sabric, retail supermarkets, the National Prosecuting Authority and security companies for this express purpose. The forum will meet on a regular basis to come up with strategies in a fight against crime and to ensure that everything is done to implement these strategies as well as monitor and evaluate progress. The statement continued that the partnership comes at the right time.

and where were we?

SIMPHIWE MKHIZE

>> There is a growing sense of unease about the future of this country following his death

I

F the founder of the post–apartheid South African nation was not dead, one would say we had a great time when our Nelson Mandela passed on, and was buried peacefully and with dignity in his home in the Eastern Cape. But then when someone is dead, it is not a good time. A family has lost a father. Someone’s neighbour and friend is no more, even if they may not have been able to bury him because of his stature. A nation’s moral frame of reference is gone. And we are waking up to a new day and asking ourselves in unison, as we re–gain our sanity following a unique type of bereavement: “Where were we?” Well, the sign language guy that served the nation’s people with hearing challenges on that historic day of Madiba’s memorial service – I mean the guy who is said to be slightly mentally unstable – that guy will go down in history as having qualified the African belief that when a family has a traditional function and a mentally sick person does funny things, then that means that the ancestors are present. Indeed, we cannot doubt that the spirits of Madiba’s ancestors that gave us the “trouble–some–one” (Rolihlahla) were there at the FNB Stadium. We may not have seen them, but the spirits of John Langalibalele Dube, Prixley ka Seme, Albert Luthu-

li, Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu and Chris Hani and all the sung and unsung heroes that saw Mandela as their role model during the dark days when the mere mention of his name invoked fears of going to prison, they were all there observing the closing of a great chapter in the history of a brave nation. Madiba loved us, and irritated us, and gave us a good time. He loved us whenhesacrificedhisfamilyandprofession as a successful lawyer and joined the leadership of the struggle and led us to political freedom. He loved us when he showed us that political power was not about him, and that as the true democrat thathewas, hewashappytoletothers take over and run government without him. He irritated us when he told us to throw our weapons to the sea as the enemies of our freedom were murdering and incarcerating political activists. He irritated us when he reminded us that Gear (his government’s pro-free enterprise policy) is governmentpolicy, andthatitwasnot negotiable with Cosatu as the union federation did not agree with procapitalist policies. He gave us a good time when he was released, and when we dominated world sports events by hosting or winning them i.e. soccer and rugby – seemingly because of his angelic

But obviously I personally did not have such a good time when Nelson Mandela was released. Well, the day coincided with the very first professional sporting event I ever took part in as a co–organiser – a match between a team owned by the legendary Jomo Sono from Gauteng and a professional KZN team that was hot at the time. The match was intended to be a fund-raising event for charity – the Pietermaritzburg Community Chest – of which I was an employee then. My volunteer marketing guy was an old friend, the late Sobantu township events and branding promoter, Bafana Molefe. Molefe, who brushed shoulders with stars, had convinced Sono to bring his team from Gauteng to the then Qokololo Stadium (which is now the Edendale Mall) amid the

uncertainty of Madiba’s release. Thefootballmatchhadjuststarted at Qokololo Stadium when youths stormed onto the sport fields, took the soccer ball, saying: “We are working and you are busy playing soccer.” And the match was over. The next thing everyone was dancing the toyitoyi, celebrating the release of the most famous prisoner on earth, our own Nelson Mandela. Obviously it was not nice having to deal with a soccer official and soccer team heads who expected compensation, even if the game did not succeed. We were still having people coming into the stadium when the comrades that were led by the popular late Mabisi from Edendale invaded the stadium. Poor Jomo Sono. He reduced what we had to pay him by forty-percent because he understood that it was not our fault as organisers that the re-

lease of Madiba had been poorly communicated. I just do not believe that next time I go to the Eastern Cape there will be a new feature in Qunu that will be braving the hills and mountains of that blessed place. I know that Madiba had long become a revered frame of reference that we could not disappoint. But there is a growing sense of unease about the future of this country following his death. Thanks to the ongoing Cosatu debacle that promises to threaten the once intact ANC–led tripartite alliance, let alone Julius Malema’s EconomicFreedomFighters(EFF)factor, itislikeeveryoneisaskingtheinevitable question: “Where to from here?” or rather, “Where were we?” *Simphiwe Mkhize writes in his personal capacity.

That was totally disrespectful and it was a barbaric behaviour by the South Africans. First of all, it was the wrong place at a very wrong time to act in that manner. That was a memorial service for the global icon who always preached about discipline and toler ance. What those people did was uncalled for and it would have been angered Madiba if he was still alive, it’s a shame.

Phasika Ngobese If one wouldn’t like booing to his or her parents it indicates that it’s wrong and it should not be done. I’m condemning that behaviour and it was very rude for people to do that in front of different international heads of states. That was an environment for mourning where all the differences were to be put aside. I for one disa greed with what those people did.

Nokwanda Ngcobo We had close to a hundred of world dignitaries who were present to honour and pay their last re spects to our former President Tata Nelson Mandela, and that was a disgrace. It was the wrong time and the wrong place for that boo ing. They have to respect the presi dent and show respect which was the main topic at Mandela’s me morial service.

ESIDENTSofCinderellaPark, including children and adults gathered to enjoy a Christmas party at the Hoosens’ house in Cinderella Park in ward 34 last Thursday. The Imfudumalo neNtokomalo (warmth and comfort) feeding scheme which is run by Ebrahim and Odette Hoosen hosted the party. Hoosen told Echo that she took over the feedingschemefromhermotherwhowaspassionate to provide for the needy, especially the children. She said the feeding scheme has been running for six years and that they have made the Christmas party their annual activity. “All in all we have 300 children and 250 adults that we cater for. After the passing of my mother I saw a need of continuing with what she loved. The children and the adults are from different areas of Cinderella Park. “The past six years have been good although we are still short of sponsors. The love of children and the community has been the driving force in runningthefeedingscheme,”shesaid, addingthat they need more sponsors. “There are sponsors that we are working with but it’s not enough. All the sponsors that we have are the reason for making the Christmas party happen. I would like to thank all of them for being there and standing by us. “I cannot count them because I might forget others and that wouldn’t be nice. I would appreciate if more sponsors come on board in caring for the needy,” she said.

What are the ideal Christmas gifts? S

IBUSISO Thusi said that he strongly believes in the act of buying gifts, as long as that gift is a necessity and not a ‘want’. “Everyone deserves to be happy during this period, however I do not support buying gifts that people can do without. With the high rate of unemployment and poverty, the ideal gifts would be food vouchers and clothes. “For impoverished families, it would also be a good idea to buy seedlings and gardening tools as a gift in order to curb poverty. As long as that gift changes someone’s life, then I am happy”. Sandile Ngcobo said that he does not believe in Christmas gifts, saying that every month is the same to him. “If someone is dear to you, you should not only show that during this time but throughout the year. If you are in the spirit of giving, donate something towards orphanages and the needy, instead of buying gifts that give short-term pleasure”. Mbali Madondo said: “I do not believe in gifts in general. If you want to show your gratitude towards me, do it anytime and do not wait for Christmas. If I really had to choose what I like foragift, itwouldbemoneyinsteadofsomething bought for me”. Thandeka Khanyile said that she also does not believe in buying gifts during Christmas. “If you want to buy something for me, rather do it whenever you feel like instead of waiting for this period. What if I never even get to live till Christmas?. Some even fall into th debt trap because they want to please others”.

>>nokulungan@mye cho.co.za IT is a season of love where people give gifts to those near anddeartothem,to express their gratitudefortheirpresence throughout the year. A successful intervention for road offences PHOTO: WEB

An accident which occurred while the driver was driving under the influence.

A

S we in the festive season it is a relief to know that there will be a new and working form of intervention to help keep our roads safe. With the help of South African Breweries (SAB),theNationalInstituteforCrimePre vention (Nicro) and the Reintegration of Offenders launched a unique alcohol and road offence programme (ROPP) to tackle the challenges of reckless and drunk driv ing. ROPP has shown early indicators of success. Since inception, the programme has suc cessfully worked with hundreds of road of fence offenders reaching more than 1000 perpetrators referred by the criminal jus tice system. Representing 350% the in tended target of the programme, a grow ing number of guilty find the programme useful and has been able to transform and change their behaviour. The first alcohol and road offences initiative has been pilot ed in and around Cape Town. Its purpose is to have a positive influence on reducing

drunk driving and keeping South Africans safe on the road. Not only has this venture reduced the workload and lessened the burden on the formal criminal justice sys tem but it has demonstrated that a more nuanced intervention as a response to drunken driving has more chance of meet ing success. It has also redefined the definition of suc cess, looking at not only retributive re sponses such as fines or jail time, but also to behavioural approaches with the aim of building knowledge, cultivating insight and changing offender behaviour with a view to reducing reoffending and in so do ing making our roads and country safer. Another aspect of the early success of the ROPP program is its demonstration of partnership between publicprivate non profit entities. In this model government, through its criminal justice apparatus, is not expected to shoulder the burden of crimeandconsequencesofwrongdoingby itself. Private entities, such as corporate

SAB, assume accountability for unintend ed consequences of the irresponsible use of its product, and the NPO demonstrates its expertise and effectiveness in imple menting impactful behaviour change pro grammes. Without the support from cor porateslocalcivilsocietyorganisationswill continue to struggle to deliver the much needed services. Recently, one of the par ticipants of the ROPP had this to say: “Nicro taught me, how alcohol affects your consciousness, it minimises your concen tration, your reflexes and your abilities to make informed decision. “Other than that, the programme made me reflect on my life, how much is at stake ifsomethingwouldhappentome.Drinking and driving is becoming the least of my problems. I am dealing with it much better, continuously guarding others on the dan ger and finding better ways to socialize. “I would like to recommend that the Nicro program be included before anyone gets thedrivinglicence, lackofknowledgeleads

us to take these uninformed decisions. Another participant simply said: “Lots of South Africans will benefit from lessons from this programme” Nicrobelievesthatprisonisnotnecessarily the best option for offenders who have been convicted of driving under the influ ence. Sending such offenders to prison simply exacerbates the problem. The SAB funded Nincro alcohol and road offences initiative allows suitable driving under the influence (DUI) offenders who have been found guilty, and sentenced, to participate in this special educational, therapeutic programme and carry out their sentences in the community. Although the conse quencesofthedrunkendrivingoffencewill not involve going to prison, such offenders will have a criminal record. In addition to incorporating a powerful ed ucational and awareness component, this needsdriven intervention also manages risks and addresses the behaviours that caused the drunken driving offence in the first place. “If we are to fight DUI in a meaning ful way, we cannot simply punish those driving under the influence without addressing faulty thinking

patterns and the behaviours which result because of this,” said Nicro’s CEO, Soraya Solomon. “The programme is a form of very creative justice, in that it gives accused persons an opportunity to reflect positively on their wrongdoing and thus prevent possible similar future acts that could have had more devastating consequences for them and other road users,” said David Frost, di rector road safety management of the De partment of Transport. “It was only after society in its entirety ral lied together to address this social disaster that real progress started being made. The same principle should apply to our fight against the scourge of alcohol abuse. Gov ernment, communities, business and the NGO community need to pool their re sources. There is no social problem which was ever resolved by one sector of society on its own,” said SAB executive director of corporate affairs and transformation said Dr Vincent Maphai. Another participant Joseph said the pro gramme taught him more about the dan gers of drinking and driving , adding that also learnt to be aware of his surrounding and drive more cautiously. –Supplied

Mvuselelo Mtuseni Thokozani Mgeyane known as Mvusi or ‘small Mandela’ in Edendale and Imbali was recently murdered in a coldblooded hit by three unknown heartless assailants.

Another struggle hero has fallen

M

VUSELELO Mtuseni Thokozani Mgeyane known as Mvusi has been murderedinacold-bloodedhitbythreeunknown heartless assailants, not far from his home, in Ilfracomb, Umkomaas in the South Coast, on Friday, 06 December 2013. The community of Pietermaritzburg, particularly Edendale and Imbali are hereby informed of this big loss of one of their son who was also locally known like the “small Mandela” in his own right, in and around Pietermaritzburg. Born in Pietermaritzburg on the 18th of June 1964, to Mr. Simon Phangubude and Mrs Lyette Bongani Mgeyane, he was the second of three children. Mvusi started school at Sion Primary School, a Catholic school kwa Ngcongangconga – kwaMaphumulo where his family had come from. He finished primary schooling in KwaMashu in Durban. Mvusi completed matric at Georgetown High School in 1984, and looked forward to starting studies towards journalism inSouthAfrica, butfoundithardtodosoinlight of the life of struggle for liberation, he had chosen. During the early 80s when there were few pockets of community activists (amashoshozela omphakathi) at the highest peak of repression by the apartheid government, Mvuselelo was already unyamazana and ijoni loMkhonto Wesizwe. He was among those few comrades who laid the foundation for the struggle in Pietermaritzburg together with the likes of Skhumbuzo Ngwenya, Mduduzi Ndlovu, Muzi (The Son of Man) Thusi, AS Chetty, Dr. Chota Motala etc who are all fallen heroes. Soon after the launching of the UDF on 20 August 1983, in Mitchells Plein, Mvuselelo was a politically active student at Georgetown High School. Mvusi participated in rebuilding a youth community resource centre, known as DCO Matiwane Centre in Edendale, named after the revolutionary DCO Matiwane. The UDF made a call for communities to organise themselves into various sector organisations. Mvuselelo as ishoshozela led the building of Edendale and Imbali Youth Organisations. He was also instrumental in the formation of the civic organisations at Imbali and Edendale, the organisations that were at the forefront during the rent boycotts and the struggle against exploitation and poor service provision. He was a revolutionary, a freedom fighter, a political educator (commissar), an academic and a community activist. Some of his teachings helped the brave youth of Edendale and Imbali who were recruited by the liberation organisations under the UDF to understand and to champion the vision of a desired South Africa. This enabled them to contextualise the challenges that were faced by our communities under the then apartheid South Africa. Through his teachings, we were introduced to the four pillars of our struggle; i.e. the mass democratic struggle, the armed struggle, the international support and the labour or industrial revolution. Our understanding of those sites of our struggles, helped us to understand throughmassdemocraticmovementtheroleof

major players and motive forces. Through the armed struggle, we learnt the importance of maintaining the value of life whilst participatinginajustwarwithoutbecoming“haters”and “destroyers”. Through the layman’s understanding of our socio-economic and political spectrum at that time, we were frustrated about why we were discriminated, poor, unemployed, landlessand dispossessed. Political education and activism (umhabulo) helped us to understand that were not bewitched or destined to be like that. Our structural economic arrangement and engineeredsocio-politicallandscapewerethemain causes for our sufferings. Political conscientisation of young people then, taught us not to hate other South Africans fromotherculturalbackgroundsandnationality. The course of the struggle was not about killing/murdering your opponents or those you regard as your enemies, it was based on the values of ubuntu or respect for human life. The Freedom Charter was studied and understood as the minimum benchmark for a better South Africa. Our understanding of our vision for the South Africa that we desired, helped us to understand our role as young people, and to understand and respect our leaders and their leadership. During various operations that we were involved in, we were guided by the likes of Mvuselelo and he helped us not to destroy ourselves. This guided us properly towards achieving a truly democratic, non-racial and non sexist unitary South Africa. He was always conscious (you mean cautious, or conscientious?) and one step ahead of the security police. He left for exile in 1985. After spending many years in the service of the Mk in various countries like Zambia, Angola, Bulgaria and others, he eventually joined the University of Havana in Cuba where he achieved a bachelors degree and honours. The one South African historical event that he would have liked to see but missed as he was completing his studies in Cuba, was the 1994 elections. On his return he joined Idasa for a short while, after which he worked as an independent consultant and later joined KwaNaloga. He completed a masters in Sociology also worked as a lecturer at the Univerisity of KwaZulu-Natal before joining Sars in Pretoria where he worked until his passing. Mvusi had a deep sense of belonging, and commitment to community. He liked to help those in need without advertising it. He was not given to flamboyancy. Although he had decided to pursue politics as a career, he enjoyed helping local structures and lending a hand where hecould.Aquotationbefittinghisprinciples,“If you want to be free, there is but one way; it is to guarantee an equally full measure of liberty to all your neighbours”. Businesses join forces with police in fighting crime NOMPENDULO NGUBANE THE South African Bank Risk Information Centre (Sabric), shopping retailers, banks and security companies will be working to gether in dealing with crime this festive season. Sabric CEO Kalyani Pillay confirmed to Echo that they will be taking part in the forum that was launched by KwaZuluNa tal provincial commissioner Mmammonye Ngobeni in October. Kalyani said as the festive season draws closer, criminals get more active as more

opportunities present themselves during this spending spree period. She said it is is therefore important for business organisations to work closely with the police to create a safer and more secure environment, especially during this time of the year. The collaboration among the banks and the cash in transit (CIT) companies via Sabric, is a unique model that enables the effective partnership with law enforcement to fight crimes af fecting these industries. “Sabric and its cli ents believe that fighting crime in the

As part of the Sabric mandate, support is provided to the South African Police Service (SAPS) with their investigations and to the National Prose cuting Authority (NPA) with their prosecu tions,” she said. In a statement by Colonel Jay Naicker,

it was mentioned that Ngobeni felt there was still an opportunity for the SAPS, busi nessandtheprivatesecurityindustrytoar rest the situation and fight business relat ed crime in a coordinated and disciplined fashion. The statement said all parties elected not to point fingers, but rather to work together to find solutions on how to deal with crimes affecting businesses. Birkett and Zondi now a

formidable Dusi combo

Andy Birkett and Sbonelo Zondi (Euro Steel) are hungry to make the 2014 Dusi Canoe Marathon title their own after confirming their formidable partnership recently. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

>> They have confirmed they are teaming up for next year

R

ecently crowned Under 23 Canoe Marathon World Champion, and triple Dusi Canoe Marathon winner, Andy Birkett and ‘Dusi darling’ Sbonelo Zondi have confirmed they will team up for next year’s iconic three day paddling showpiece. The race will start from Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg to the Blue Lagoon in Durban from 13 to 15 February and the two are hungry to make amends for their individual 2013 disappointments. Birkett, having won the 2010 and 2012 K2 events with previous dou-

bles partner Jason Graham, and the 2011 K1 title, finished a disappointing fourth earlier this year after a series of technical mishaps on day two, whilst Zondi, having led the 2013 clash for two and three–quarter days and looking set for a historic maiden victory, had his dreams shattered when he fell out at the notorious Pumphouse Weir and Rapid to ultimately finish a disappointing third. The newly formed duo overcame their disappointment with victory in the Non–Stop Dusi just weeks afterwards though and, just a couple of weeks ago, added the prestigious 50

Miler Canoe Marathon’s title to their steadily growing list of achievements. However, with victory in next year’s Dusi their sole focus, the Euro Steel pairing will be out to prove the dreaded 50 Miler winner’s curse fictitious as they enter an important period of their build-up campaign over the festive season. “Many like to believe that if you win the 50 Miler then you won’t win Dusi,” explained Birkett. “The reason for that is, traditionally, if you’ve gotten yourself into a position to win a tough race like the 50 Miler then you’vepeakedtoosoontobecompeti-

tivecometheDusi.Idefinitelyfeelthat this isn’t the case with Sbonelo and I though. Had Hank (McGregor) and Jasper (Mocké) not wrapped at Island Rapid there is no doubt they would have beaten us in the 50 Miler. “We are also going about things really carefully, trying to find a balance between training and racing with Dusi as our only goal in mind. The 50 Miler was a great opportunity to test ourselves against some of the other top crews around but we certainly didn’t goouttherelookingforthewin, itkind of just happened that way,” he added. The mental aspect of competing at

the top level of river marathon racing is a major element of paddlers’ success and the pair, especially given their relatively recent emergence, will look to take what they can from their victories without letting it being to their detriment. “It was good to win the 50 Miler from a point of view that it is it nice to know the combination works. It was a nice confidence booster for us and, whilst confidence can sometimes be dangerous, for us I don’t think it was a bad thing at all,” said Birkett. “We were surprised to win 50 Miler,” added Zondi. –Supplied

Harrison: Players need to take responsibility LAMONTVILLE Golden Arrows coach Mark Harrison wants his players to show more character after describing their Absa Premiership performance in the Durban derby as “atrocious” against AmaZulu in Umlazi on Monday. Usuthu surged to a 3-0 victory at the King Zwelithini stadium with Tamsanqa Teyise scoring with headers in the sixth and 33rd minutes, eithersideofacleverGoodmanDlamini finish midway through the opening stanza. The three points lifted the visitors up to fourth on the table, while Abafana Bes’thende dropped to last. “We were atrocious in the first half,” Harrison said. “I said to the players at half time ‘you’ve got to start taking responsibility for your own actions’. “You can point fingers at who you like, and that’s the problem. They standaroundandsay‘it’shisfaultand

his fault or it’s the system’. Actually, look inside yourself and take responsibility. “We didn’t compete in that first half, we were shocking...absolutely shocking. You expect character, but we had none of it. “Theplayersneedtostartshowing some balls or there will be consequences.” The English coach also defended his son Ryan Harrison, who was makinghisdebutingoalafterbeingsigned by the club last week. The young custodian was shaky throughout and was at fault for two of the three goals. “Look the first goal he should have possibly come to cut out the cross, but to be fair to the boy, he’s been exposed,” Harrison added. “He’s been exposed by a poor team in front of him in the first 45 minutes. But he’ll settle down, it’s not a problem. “Maybe I asked too much of him

today coming into a local derby, a big game and he’s playing for his father as well, so he’s under a bit more pressure. But he’s big enough to deal with it and I’m sure he will. I know what he’s capable of doing.” AmaZulu assistant coach Wilfred Mugeyi, who deputised in the dugout for the ill Craig Rosslee, felt the platform for victory was laid by their opening half-hour showing. “We had a very good first half and that’s what laid the foundation,” he said. “The boys knew that Arrows were struggling and by scoring first we just made it tougher for them. So I think we were brilliant in that first half. “The second half we sat back too muchandallowedthemtocomeatus, but I think we defended very well and fully deserved the win.” PHOTO: BACKPAGE PIX
