“The divorce came at the right time as both unions need to go back to the drawing board and reassess them selves. They need to reassess whether they are still fighting for workers' rights or if it is about power struggles. The divorce will allow both these unions to reflect on what they are really about."

Should Numsa be separated from Cosatu? FOLLOWING a series of problems and consultations, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) last week cut ties with the National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa). NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to city residents to find out how they feel about this decision. As it stands, Cosatu has given Numsa 30 days to appeal against its expulsion.

"The divorce between these two unions is something that was foreseen a few years ago, taking into account the division between their leaders. However it is not the right move because Numsa has so many members who are also a part of Cosatu. This will have an impact on membership."

Mammie Zondi

Nokuthula Mpanza

"Right now, both these unions are looking at their own interests and have forgotten the interests of the workers. This separation will give them time to look back on what is important. On the other side, it is wrong as their separation was not the view of the whole membership. This decision is going to promote factionalism and division and will kill the relevance of the tripartite alliance.

"This separation will have a bad impact on our economy because our country is already facing a disruptive labour environ ment because unions are competing against one another. Both may be left with no bargain ing power and less membership."

Ninetysix students have jetted off to Cuba to study medicine. KZN MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo urged the medical students to prepare to work hard, to be well behaved and be good ambassadors for South Africa. Their departure will now bring the total number of KZN medical trainees in Cuba to 789. By 2019, all these medical students would have returned to the country to begin ploughing back their much needed skills in their own communi ties. Dhlomo (L) bids farewell to student Bahle Ngcobo (R) who is pictured with his mother, Lindiwe Ngcobo.

USINESSES and local residents are fed up with the paving work currently underway in the CBD, especially along Langalibalele. “This is taking forever to finish. There is no place for pedestrians to walk safely and we are always ducking vehicles driving down Langalibalele Street. “Everything is in patches,” said

Anger over paving Nomaswazi Dlamini. Onebusinessownerwhoseshop is located along Langalibalele Street near the Msunduzi Tourism Hub said that the unfinished brick paving of the pavement hinders customers from entering their shops. “The workers are always digging and patching the pavement with red bricks. Days later, you see the very same workers stripping the very same pavement and restarting the whole process all

over again. “I doubt that these people doing the brick paving are even trained to do the work. Almost everywhere you go, there are patches of unfinished work.” Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said that they are busy with all the contractors to give them the programme to reinstate all the work done in the CBD. “The problem with all this construction is that there was no

way-leave approved, but that doesn’t mean we can’t push them to reinstate all the works. “We are gathering all the information street by street to find out who did the work from the roads department,” said Mafumbatha. She added that the project currently being carried out in Langalibalele Street is done by the municipality, and that a meeting was due to take place last week Friday on the update of the project.

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za DURING National Obesity week last month, the MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, raised his concerns about statistics released by the World Health Organization (WHO) that at least 2.8 million adults around the globe die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. He said already in South Africa, 66% of women and 33% of men are overweight. Dhlomo said that his department is observing an increase of relatively young people suffering from high blood pressure, coronary heart diseases, diabetes and several types of cancers. “Mostoftheseconditionsareself-madeastheycomeabout through what people eat, drink and the choice they make of not engaging in physical exercise,” he said. Local registered dietician Lindelwa Zimu said that obesity can be attributed to more than one factor. Urbanisation has resulted in increased exposure to fast foods and restaurants to the public, she said. She added that obesity can be prevented by educating the public about the diseases associated with obesity. “The public needs to know that obesity can result in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Social media can help create awareness and educate the public. The Department of Health hasalsorolledouttelevisionadvertsthatencouragethepublic to make healthy choices. The South African Food based dietary guidelines, serving as a guideline on healthy eating, can be followed or applied to all persons above the age of five. “Portion control is a very important aspect in preventing obesity. For example, on a standard plate, vegetables should make up half of the plate (two handfuls), starchy food should be a clenched fist size (1/4 of a plate) and protein should be the size of the palm of your hand (1/4 of a plate). Fats should be one teaspoon per person in the household or the size of the tip of the thumb,” she said. Foods that can cause obesity are: •Highfat, highsugarandhighsaltfoodssuchaspies, chips, biscuits, sweets and also refined carbohydrates. • Take-aways or fast foods should also be avoided as they are high-fat, high sugar or high salt.

Groen Sebenza Indaba T

HE 30 Groen Sebenza interns from Wildlands attended an Indaba at Somkhanda Game Reserve recently. The role of Wildlands is to incubate pioneers into the environmental sector by addressing priority skills shortages and giving them the mentorship and training they need to develop themselves further before entering

the competitive South African job market. This Indaba was an extension of such programmes and activities aimed at upskilling and preparing these young people for the working world. The uBuntu Earth team of Wildlands facilitated this Indaba by running activities in which pioneers could share their learning and experiences

over the past year, and inspire and motivate each other for the road ahead. The uBuntu Earth departments’ fundamental emphasis is on building capacity and enabling this group to ‘progress through the system’ or move on to other green jobs and entrepreneurial enterprises in the future.

ISIQALO Early Child Development (ECD) Centre in France, Phase Four was donated educational materials and furniture last Wednesday. This was an initiative by Primedia who sponsored the materials after the centre was identified as one that desperately needed funding. The crèche has now been adopted by the Msunduzi Municipality who was also part and parcel of the official handover of the material. The owner of the crèche, Nobuhle Zondi, said it all came as a surprise. “Ward councilor Bongani Dlomo came to us months ago and informed us that the Msunduzi Municipality was looking for a crèche that was not funded. He gave us some application forms to fill in and that is what we did. “It was early this week when we received a call from Primedia saying that they were introduced to us by the Msunduzi Municipality. They informed us that they would supply us with some educational material and furniture. Before the event on Wednesday, municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi came and gave us mattresses for the children to sleep on. They used to sleep on blankets. “We have 81 children who are from different areas of France and the Mpumelelo area. We are very excited. They gave us groceries, pots, chairs and tables for the children, educational material and manyotherthings.Wearegratefulandweareforever thankful to what they have done,” said Zondi. Dlomo said that he is thankful to the municipality and Primedia. “I’m short of words of gratitude for what has hap pened here today,” he said. Nkosi said that the municipality was delighted to put smiles on other people’s faces.

The “Rats Nest” was a project initiated by the Merchiston Grade four boys of 2013. It is used as an outdoor classroom, where the boys are given the opportunity to build relationships, explore, create, design, plant and learn from, and in, nature. One project involves each boy being given an indigenous tree seed to plant and take care of for the entire year. Each tree is pruned and manicured into a bonsai, that they eventually take home at the end of their Grade seven year. Pictured in the garden classroom are Thandazani Sithole (L) and Jordan Curtis.

Hyundai, Kia to triple green cars EARLIER in November Wheels24 reported that Hyundai and sister Korean company Kia will pay the United States government a penalty equivalent to R1.1 billiontoendatwoyearinvestigationinto"over stated" fuel consumption claims on about a third of its vehicle products. Following the investigation, the automakers announced a plan to triple the number of fuel efficient cars by 2020, addressing concerns about the pair's green track record and competitiveness in fuel economy. The announcement on Wednesday, 12 November came a week after the pair pledged to raise the fuel economy of their vehicles by 25% by 2020 to meet emissions regulations in the U.S. and Europe and at home in South Korea. It also followed an announcement on Tuesday 11 November that the pair would buy back R6 billion worth of shares in what was widely regarded as an attempt to appease investors angered by a R100 billion bid for property for new headquarters. Analyst Yim Eunyoung of Samsung Securities said: "Investors have complained about Hyundai's lack of

shareholderfriendly policies and communication about its vision, especially after the land deal. "Today's announcement seems to be part of its efforts to soothe shareholders and better communi cate with the market." Shares of Hyundai have fallen 25% in 2014, but have risen over 17% since hitting a more than four year low on November 5. Kia stock has declined 0.9% while the benchmark index has lost 2.4%. Under last week’s plan, Hyundai and Kia will raise their number of fuelefficient cars to "at least" 22 by 2020 from seven now. Hyundai, Kia said in a joint statement: "We have set an internal target of making it to number two in the global ecofriendly car market, which is expected to grow from this year's 2.2 million vehicles to 6.4 million in 2020." Hyundai and Kia plan to release 12 models pow ered by gasolineelectric hybrid engines, expanding the lineup to small cars and sport utility vehicles. The pair's green range will also have six plugin hybrid midsized and compact cars, two fuelcell cars and two batterypowered electric cars. Wheels24.

SA Dakar quad team ride for rhinos Brian Baragwa nath (L) and Hannes Saaijman, the two riders comprising Team Rhide SA, will take on the 2015 Dakar Rally for the first time. TEAM Rhide SA, comprising Brian Baragwanath and Hannes Saaijman, will take on the 2015 Dakar Rally in January. Baragwanath has won multiple titles in the quad category in the SA Nationals, SA National off-road, local Pro events and a top finish in the AMA ATVA Nationals in the U.S. Saaijman achieved victory in the 2014 Q2 Class Challenge and is a veteran off-road rider. Both riders will tackle the tough Dakar for the first time in the quad category. Team Rhide SA is riding for the Save The Rhino campaign, hoping to raise international awareness of the rhino poaching epidemic in South Africa. Baragwanath said: "I always wanted to compete in the Dakar. This is one event that has always been on my to do bucket list. The same applies to Hannes and in 2015 it's all going to happen. "We have spent months preparing and it's all coming together with some generous sponsors and partners such as Melicia Labuschagne, GM of Liqui Moly SA. Hopefully there will be more coming on board before the end of the year, as the entry fee for this event costs a fortune. General manager of sponsor Liqui Moly, Melicia Labuschagne, said: "The rhino

27 TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA

The truth is still the truth

M

ANY people, especially ignorant people, want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being correct, for being you. Never apolo gise for being correct or for being years ahead of your time. “If you are right and you know it, speak your mind. Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still the truth.” Gandhi. We still maintain that South African football will remain in the doldrums if leaders persist to run away from the truth. The truth is that when you copy, you remain just that, a copy of someone else. A copy also still needs to be certified in order to be accepted as a true copy. Technical ignorance among many people in top administrative positions is not helping the lo cal game. The sooner football fall in the hands of “real” football people, the better. This is the truth that many of us are scared to admit. The damage caused by negative foreign influences will take many years to remove. It is better to starve than being fed poison. Thechallengewiththisisthattheproblemmagnifies when poison has been swallowed. The English philosophy has destroyed South African talent. Presently, our game is characterised by long balls into the opposition box the so called “skop en donner.” One just wonders how our people allow the so called ‘Liverpool way’ of playing to be taught to South African children. What has this institution achieved in world football over the past decade? Presently, they have spent a fortune buying English players the players who are average compared to footballers from other cultures. TheEnglishpeoplehavehadmorethanfourcom missions to try and find out solutions to their prob lems. English football is spending about R18 billion a year on academies. They still have to show success for this kind of investment after two decades. We are allowing ourselves to be a dumping site for failed ideas. The time has come for real patriots to resist these moneymaking schemes. The history will judge us harshly for having failed the local football talent. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Last month for 2015 Comrades entries ENTRIES for the 90th Comrades Marathon will close at month end, or as soon as the cap of 23000 has been reached. The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has announced that more than 14230 entries have already been received. This means that less than 9000 entries are available before the overall entry process closes at the end of November, or as soon as the cap has been reached. Thereafter, no entries will be accepted so runners are urged to enter as soon as possible or risk missing out. The 90th Comrades Marathon will be run on Sunday, 31 May 2015 and the cost to South African runners is R380. The entry requirements, which are clearly indicated on the entry form, must be adhered to at all times. Please note that the 2014 Comrades Marathon will not be an au tomatic qualifier for the 2015 race. Qualifying details must be submitted to the CMA by 5 May 2015. The 90th edition of the world’s biggest and oldest ultramar athon will be an ‘uprun’, starting at the Durban City Hall and ending at the Oval Cricket Stadium in Pieter maritzburg. ARITZBURG United will have a tricky and tough assignment this weekend. On Saturday at 8.15pm, the in form Team of Choice will face the unpredictable Ajax Cape Town at Cape Town Stadium. At least the Maritzburg lads will travel to the Mother City with positive minds and a winning mentality which they have currently demonstrated under head coach Steve Komphela. United’s publicist Brian Zuma this week told Echo that they are not expecting a walk in the park because Urban Warriors are always tough to play under Cape Town conditions. “We are well prepared for the difficulties we are likely to face. Facing a Cape Town team at Foot home is always a tough assignment but we are in good shape and raring to go,” said Zuma. MANAGEMENT of the uMgungundlovu and District Netball Association have expressed confidence in the preparations for the up coming South African Local Government Association (Salga) Games, in spite of rumoured pitfalls. The local netball squad will be one of the teams torepresentuMgungundlovuDistrictMunicipality at the annual Salga Games in different codes of sport. It has been rumoured that the netball team has found it difficult to get all the players together for training at the central venue Westmore Park because of a lack of transportation. This week a source said that at the moment, preparations are not going smoothly. “The reality is that players who make uMgungundlovu are coming from different areas like Camperdown, Vulindlela, Richmond and other outlying areas. It’s a big mission to get them together because some of the children are not provided with transport. “If we really need all these players together, everyday and on time, the team needs funds for transportation. Otherwise the preparations won’t go well and we won’t be prepared for the Games,” said the source. The uMgungundlovu and District Netball Association President Matoli “Torish” Nsele said that preparations started on a positive note, although there were a couple of challenges. She insisted that there is no crisis. “We started training and so far, things are looking good. There is no crisis at all and it’s just normal challenges that go with preparations every year,” said Nsele. Department of Sports and Recreation district manager Busi Nkomo admitted that there were a couple of testing moments. She said that they are just for “now” and things were under control. “As far as we are concerned things are going well. The federation is on the right track, our department is hands on and everything is under control. In sport, we always work with a couple of challenges but we always overcome them,” said Nkomo. This year’s annual Salga Games will be hosted by Mzinyathi Municipality in Dundee in early December. -Jerry Barnes.
