Phone sex sessions at the City Hall NQOBILE MTOLO

>>news@myecho.co.za

A

SOUTHCoastbaseddebtcollection company has threatened to take the Msunduzi Municipality to court over an unpaid sex phone call bill. C.B Dobson Sole proprietor Camelot Administration Services represents an adult chat line company and is looking for settlement of an unpaid bill worth R1 920. In the letter sent to the municipality, the company recorded two sex calls which were made last year on Saturday, 23 December, from the Executive Committee (Exco) suite reception landline. TheEchohasthenameoftheperson who was recorded to have made the sex phone call. C.B Dobson Sole proprietor Camelot Administration Services told Echo that they approached the municipality to supply them with a Telkom phone record but to date, this has not

happened the company said. “I previously raised the issue of protection in the executive suite because I came to work one Saturday and I found a lady sitting at the front desk using the telephone. I worked here for over an hour and she was on the phone the entire time. I have called for a report from the accounts section so that I can find out what numbers were being dialed on that day,” said Exco member Bill Lambert. He continued, “…But listen, it [telephone line] has been used as an adult chat line and R1 920 has been used from the front desk to have this sultry chat to some adult person on the other end. “This Exco suite of ours is being used by unauthorized people for adult chats. What Exco suite in the whole of South Africa has their front desk being used for adults chats? This is something so extraordinary it is beyond speech. It brings back what I raised about unauthorized people at executive suites.”

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@my cho.co.za

The manager at the municipal manager’s office, Madeleine Jackson, disputed the issue, saying that it was nothing but a scam. “It has happened to us before. About five years ago it happened in my office where they sent a notification to me. They used the extension line of my secretary. I asked them for a recording and the recording was inaudible. When I asked them for the times of the phone calls, I compared that with our print out at the municipality and there was no such thing. When threatened with legal action, I never heard from them again. “I can go on record and say that this was a scam and they might even do it with other government departments who could be too scared to object.” Lambert said that he was concerned about security at the executive suite because his wallet and bag were once stolen from there. It has also been reported that in the past, a fridge and DVD player were once stolen from the City Hall.

"The president should attend parliamentary sittings so that he can answer for himself. Opposition parties seem to be using this opportunity to push their own agendas. Only the presi dent can solve the matter and only after he has appeared, will things get better."

D

ESPITE rule number 63 of the National Assembly prohibiting members from using offensive and un becoming language, parliament has become a scene of shame where members engage in public spats. Last week, chaos erupted in parliament after EFF member Reneilwe Mashabela refused to vacate the house after calling President Jacob Zuma a thief for refusing to pay backthemoneyspentonhisNkandlahome.NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to city residents to find out what they think should be the solution.

Thembeka Ngubane

"If the EFF is not disciplined, it will bring the dignity of parliament into disrepute. Something must be done about their behaviour and there are certain opposition parties who are condoning their behaviour and they must be stopped. As leaders, they are supposed to be role models. They are also creating a bad impression about our country to other countries."

Gugu Ngcobo

"Although the president was wrong to use taxpayers money to renovate his home, it is wrong for parliamentary members to behave like this. Before the EFF went to parliament, there were no such problems. It should be disbanded."

"Parliament has lost its dignity. Our leaders have forgotten about our needs but instead they are fighting for positions. There are those who have their own personal issues against the president, and are using parliamentary sittings to divide members even further. Parliament has become a kindergarten and it is up to its members to restore dignity."

THE Msunduzi Municipality is working on policy plans to help local residents get permanent employment under service providers who are awarded contracts from the municipality. The Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela mentioned this while the Executive Committee (Exco) reviewed the state of the city address monitoring template. This template looks at challenges faced by the municipality. These challenges were highlighted in Ndlela’s state of the city address in June this year. The template also displays action plans and deadlines on meeting these challenges. The identified challenges include the electrification of nonelectrified areas, high mast lights in Vulindlela, operation and maintenance of the Vu lindlela water scheme, the huge

repairs and maintenance backlog, indigents, the Pietermaritzburg informal economy, the transformation of the public transport system, learnerships and bursaries and the training of municipal employees. Ndlela said that the municipality needs to look at the amendment of policies to help grow local economic development by offering employment to vulnerable groups, attracting investments and the innovation wherein the municipality enforces the employment of local labour on a per manent basis. “You have people who are digging all over the place and contractors bring employmentfromwherevertheycome from. When they finish off their work, they leave local temporary employees jobless. Let us develop our own policy that will state that a particular percentage should be permanently employed from within the city in compensation for the work offered. “There are many contractors we give jobs to. Whether they are local or not, a certain percentage of local workers should be employed on a per manent basis. Once you address un employment, you address the issue of poverty and inequality,” said Ndlela.

MNCP Breakfast Club project

AMA Ntombi’s Community Project (MNCP), in partnership with Joint Aid Management (JAM), have started a breakfastclubwhichprovidesunderprivileged children with nutritious CSS+ porridge which gives them 75% of their daily micro-nutrient requirements. “Our community care worker prepares the porridge for the children, who start arriving from 6.30am onwards, for their breakfast before going to school,” said Sandra Pillay, MNCP fundraiser. The programme started a few weeks ago and there are already 130 children in the daily BreakfastClub, withthenumbersincreasingas children get used to the porridge and inform

others. According to UNICEF’s facts on children, approximately 70% of children in the province live in poverty and 30% of the children experience hunger on a regular basis. A further 14% are at risk of hunger. “These are the realities we face in the two informal settlements where we work with the poorest of the poor. We find children going to school without having breakfast because there is no food at home. Many children survive on one meal a day and some go without meals for days, especially over weekends or when schools are closed for the holidays,” said Pillay. YCLSA threatens Woolworths boycott NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za THE Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) of the Harry Gwala Region is threatening a massive boycott against Woolworths stores in Pietermaritzburg in December. According to the YCLSA district deputy secretary Njabulo Mtolo, the League is simply sending a message to Woolworths stores to cut ties that they have with Israel. The YCLSA had embarked on boycott action two weeks ago at the Woolworths storeinScottsville.Mtolosaidthusfar, they are satisfied with the process registered ever since this campaign started. Woolworths group director retail Paula Disberry said that the group currently only sources figs, pretzels and pomegranates from Israel. “We respect their right to protest peacefully and lawfully outside Woolworth’s stores. Our primary concern is

the safety of our employees and our customers. We know that the current conflict in the Middle East has affected manyofourcustomersandouremployees. We have heard many views expressed via our social media channels and have had emails and phone calls. “Woolworths abhors violence and loss of life, particularly of children, in any circumstance and we are deeply saddened by the tragic consequences of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. “Many of our customers have asked if wesourcefromtheoccupiedterritoriesand we do not. We have no political affiliations and respect our customers’ right to make individualpurchasingchoices, whichiswhy we clearly label every product’s country of origin. We fully comply with government guidelines on product from Israel. Less than 0.1% of our food is sourced from Isra el,” said Disberry. Mtolo said the boycotting of Woolworths stores is a national call. “The boycott will only happen if the stores refuse to end the relationship they have with Israel. We encourage all peace loving people of South Africa to continue with this campaign until Woolworths, all apartheid supporters and beneficiaries, cut all ties with Israel,” said Mtolo.

he campaign, which takes place from 25 November to 10 December, was adopted by South Africa 15 years ago, in a bid to raise awareness on women and child abuse. A social worker and a theologian, working closely with people affected by HIV, pushed the gender dynamics within Zengele. “As a theologian, we read the Bible to try and search for answers. However the same Bible is degrading to women in some scriptures, and we try to re-read it in a way to give empowerment. Gender based violence is so rife and through interacting with victims, we try and find ways on how best to talk about in order to stop it.” She said while violence against women and children remains rife, initiatives like the 16 days of activism have contributed to a number of reported cases as in the past, people

THE Pietermaritzburg SAPS Cluster Office have announced their support for the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children Abuse campaign which kicked off on 25 November and will end on 10

Fight against gender based violence

>> “The fight against gender based violence should not only be a matter of 16 days, but should be our daily bread,” said gender activist Bongi Zengele. Having started the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign on Tuesday, NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to Zengele from Pelham who has been a gender activist for the past 20 years. Gender activist Bongi Zengele says more cases of abuse are being reported, but the justice system is still too lenient on perpetrators

were afraid to speak out. “The campaign should in fact be 365 days. It is to acknowledge that gender based violence is there, and is aimed at

giving people a platform to talk about difficult things that happen in the privacy of their homes. It is about giving a voice to the voiceless. It is a loud, silent scream where women and children say no to sexual abuse, and many other forms of abuse.

“While more women and children are willing to speak out, they are often stopped by three things - culture, inequality and stigma. Culture is embedded in our hearts. Women are

December. In 2012, the World Health Organization announced that South Africa has the highest rate of domestic violence against women and children. Yet in the same vein, South Africa is the highest ranked country in the African continent when it comes to gender and development. In addition to this, the country has a powerful instrument in the form of its Constitution, where rights of victims of violence are ensured and upheld. “OurConstitutionentrenchesanumber of rights that are directly relevant to the

context of genderbased violence,” said Brigadier Francis Bantham, acting cluster commander in Pietermaritzburg. This year, the theme for the campaign is ‘Count Me In: together we move a non violent South Africa forward’. “We have realized as the South African Police that the past 16 years we have been observing this campaign but not every body was in, or counted in. For many years, it was women who were in the forefront, campaigning against this crime. To this end, to count everybody in means to question ourselves as to who we must

protect and how that protectionmust be provided,” said Bantham. A change to the traditional ways boys and men are socialized in society is needed. Women and girls should no longer be viewed as subservient, and the perpetuation of male power and control must be stopped and the gender myth broken. “The South African Police calls on every

Most of the perpetrators are people who hold power. “Lastly, there is still stigmatization around sexual violence in our communities.” She raised concerns that while thereisagrowingnumberofreported cases, the justice system is failing victims as there is leniency towards perpetrators. “Take courage and speak out. It is not your fault, and let us work togethertoreachouttoperpetrators.” Zengele also runs a support group for survivors of sexual and gender based violence at Imbalenhle clinic once a month. The group, known as the “Phephisa Movement”, offers therapy and psycho-social support to children and women who are victims of abuse. We must stand united in the fight against crime,” said Bantham. She added that every police station within the cluster will be engaging in various programmes and projects and the community is encouraged to call their local police stations and join them as they implement it in the community.

Plan your own funeral P

PHOTO: FILE

Planning your funeral makes it eas ier for your family to cope during a time of grieving.

EOPLE plan for many things well in advance. Finances are set aside for schooling, buying a home, retirement and even holidays, but despite it being a certainty, fewer people plan for their own deaths. Death is not an easy subject to discuss, especially when it is your own. Few people enjoy facing their own mortality. But as anyone knows, dying is not something that can be scheduled. Advance planning can ensure your

wishes are followed and can remove some of the emotional and financial burden from relatives. There are dozens of decisions and tasks that come into play with funeral planning. The cost of a funeral can be very high. Without pre-planning on your part, finances are just one of the many tasks relatives would have to handle. Here are some things to consider when pre-planning your funeral: • Contact the funeral director about what you want. • Choose a cemetery.

• Contact insurance agents. • Select a casket and burial location. • Choose clothing. • Decide on the flowers and music for the funeral. • Arrange transportation. • Contact friends and family. • Order thankyou cards. • Sign legal papers. • Pay for the services of doctors, funeral directors, etc. Depending on the advance planning you do and the service you use, many of these tasks can be

handled by you, leaving relatives to take care of personal condolences. This makes it easier for them to cope during a time of grieving. It also ensures that they are not taken advantage of financially, by people who profit at the expense of other’s grief. There are many options in advanced funeral arrangements. If you think pre-planning might be the right idea for you, discuss it with family and explore options. It could be an important component of overall estate planning.

OUTH Africans are not fair on our professional footballers. I sympathise with May Mahlangu. A lot has been said by many South Africans about patriotism, love for the country etc. I doubt if any of us in this country are patriots. Presently, young prospective footballers play football in conditions not befitting human beings. Many of them are trying hard to use football to get out of poverty. I think May Mahlangu was once in that position. How many of us serve football and South African people in our various positions with honesty and dedication? Is it a love for your country when friends and relativesaregivenpositionsaheadofdeserving candidates? Is it patriotism to build massive stadiums for afewelitewhilemasseshavenoproperfootball facilities? Is May Mahlangu worse than municipalities that do not cut grass and mark the fields for lower division teams? Please dear South Africans, make me understand if loving your country entails undermining localtechnicalexpertise?Isit about promoting the so called Liverpool International Schools way of playing football? How many South Africans will sacrifice their jobs to serve the so-called nation? We are very selective in terms of judgements. We thrive on attacking the weak and small. Iwouldhavelovedtoseetheresponseifthisboy played for a club of powerful personalities. Presently, many of our young people are neglected in football. Our country and football are not showing any love to them. They are

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA treated like strangers in their own country. We host and dine visitors with the best dishes while the youth lack basic football facilities and equipment. We make empty speeches referringtothemasthefuture of the country while contributing nothing to their journey. I suggest you pause and think about someone with no contract to secure him for immediate future. Will Safa pay him a salary if he gets a serious injury without a club? Which club can offer an injured player a new contract? Clubs pay monthly salaries for footballers. Any wise man will consider his family first before the so-called “nation.” Loving your country entails loving yourself first. Unzima lo mthwalo!

HOW MANY SOUTH AFRICANS WILL SACRIFICE THEIR JOBS TO SERVE THE SOCALLED NATION? WE ARE VERY SELECTIVE IN TERMS OF JUDGEMENTS.

THE much-talked about Telkom Knockout final betweenPlatinumStarsandSuperSportUnited on Saturday afternoon at Orlando Stadium is expected to be a nail biting affair. Firstly, the match is likely to divide soccer diehards around Mzansi because it will be treated as Gauteng against North West. The DSTV funded United is based in the capital of the country, Pretoria, Stars is based in Rusternberg’s North West and owned by Royal Bafokeng tribe. What is more interesting is that the Rusternberg-based outfit are reigning champions and will do whatever it takes to take home R4,25 million. Stars head coach Allan Freese says that Saturday’s final against United will be tough, not only for his side but for everybody. “It’s tough for Platinum Stars and Perfume SuperSport United. Both of us will have it tough and the best team on the day will take honours,” said Freese. Freese refused to admit that his team R375 will be under pres100ml sure on Saturday because they are SAVE defending champiR ons. “ORIGINAL” “Both teams are in the finals and both teams will feel the pressure.” he said. teams in the league and the defending champions of the TKO. “I also hope our seasoned campaigners like Thuso Phala, David Mathebula and Thabo September will play a leading role on the field to bring us positive results. It’s going to be a tough one for everybody,” said Igesund. - Jerry Barnes.
