Woolworths granted urgent interdict against YCLSA NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@my echo.co.za

WOOLWORTHS stores have been granted an urgent interdict by the Johannesburg High Court to protect their customers and employees from the unlawful Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) in store protest. This comes after the Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) of the Harry Gwala Region revealed that they will embark on a massive boycott against Woolworths stores in Pietermaritzburg this month. The YCLSA want Woolworths stores to stop any kind of relationship they have with Israel. They demand that Woolworths stop selling products of Israel in their stores since there is conflict between Israel and Palestine. Three weeks ago, the YCLSA protested outside of the Woolworths

store in Scottsville. According to the YCLSA district deputy secretary Njabulo Mtolo, the massive boycott is meant to happen on a national level this month. Woolworths Group director retail operations, Paula Disberry, said that Woolworths stores welcome the court decision to protect their customers and employees from unlawful BDS in-store protests. “The court decision also enforces our right to trade free of threats and intimidation as we approach the peak holiday season. Our staff and customers have felt scared in the face of escalating violence and this ruling offers them some relief. Woolworths respects the constitutional rights of protesters to express their views lawfully without infringing the rights of others. We trust that BDS will respect the decision of the court. Separately, BDS and Woolworths have agreed to meet on or by 10 December. This is not a part of the court order.” said Disberry.

Large quantities of drugs seized in festive season bust AMIL UMRAW AS the sun set behind thunderclouds over Pietermaritzburg on Friday night, two police stations began to mobilise for a crime prevention operation. The Pietermaritzburg and Mountain Rise stations embarked on a 12hour festive season highdensity crime operation. It began with a roadblock set up on Chota Motala Road near the graveyard. Officers swarmed the roadside and pulled over vehicles, while others took off on foot to patrol surrounding areas. As the night progressed, all types of criminals were hauled into the two stations. The Mountain Rise station apprehended more than 27 people suspected of crimes, including rape, house robbery, illegal possession of drugs and dealing in drugs. Drunken drivers were also booked. During the raid, the police recovered an array of items. Large quantities of dagga and heroin were taken off the streets and lots of liquor was seized from unlicensed liquor premises. One unlicensed 9 mm firearm was also seized.

>> South Africa is still the most affected country in the world

HIV still a crisis in South Africa

NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

W

HILE the World Health Organisation (WHO) says South Africa has the largest prevalence of HIV in the world, the uMgungundlovu district is leading in the province with a high anti-natal HIV prevalence of 40.7%. This was revealed by Umgungundlovu District political champion, who is also the MEC for Finance in the province, Belinda Scott at a World Aids Day commemoration at KwaXimba on Monday. Scott said that out of the 123 845 people that were tested in the district between April and September this year, 17 023 tested positively. Under the theme “Getting to Zero HIV new infections”, Scott said that one of the challenges facing communities is stigmatization, saying that communities should work together withthegovernmenttostopbranding people who are living with the virus and embrace them. Meanwhile, the WhizzKids United Health Academy, which is stationed at Edendale hospital, on Monday commemorated World Aids Day where it forged a partnership with Maritzburg United. The academy, which was opened in 2010, provides instruction and support to young people through activities, counselling, HIV testing,

WhizzKids United Health Academy at Edendale Hospital commemorated World Aids day on Monday, through signing a memorandum of understanding with Maritzburg United. At the signing are (from left) Siyabonga Mdluli (Maritzburg United Development coach), Brian Zuma (PRO), Stefan Kunze (WhizzKids coach) and Dennis Kerspuy from WhizzKids. HIV drug treatment and career guidance. Speaking at the commemoration, Stefan Kunze of WhizzKids said: “South Africa is still the most affected countryintheworld, withjustoversix million people who are infected. We

wanttocreateanAidsfreegeneration which is enriched and that can be achieved through speaking with our youngsters. “We want to normalize the issue of HIV and Aids, as stigmatization is still very rife. People who are infected

should be afforded the same opportunities as everyone else.” Maritzburg United PRO Brian Zuma said: “As people in the sporting field, we need to lead by example. It is important for our soccer stars to be exemplary and live a life that can be

emulated by other people, and avoid doing things that will lead them to being infected.” Provincial head for the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) Mzamo Zondi said that while the government has made progress towards combating the virus, the job is half done as HIV remains a crisis. “Although we have come a long way in the Aids response, a long way since the countless deaths and unnecessary suffering of people living with the virus in this country, there are now worrying indications that the Aids response is stalling. South Africa may have the largest treatment programme in the world, however this is mostly as a result of effective activism in the country, whichislargelydrivenbytheTACand other activists. “The country is recording more than 400 000 new HIV infections and 170 000 deaths every year. Sadly, this is at a time where donor priorities have changed and funding for Aids is rapidly diminishing.

Mall opening creates frenzy

SISO NAILE

T

HE grand opening of Brookside Mall, on the corner of the N3 and Chota Motala Road, got Pietermaritzburg shoppers in a frenzy last week. Shoppers strained under the bulges of three and four trolleys each. The parking lot, which has parkingforatleast830cars,wasjam packed, with security and traffic officers assisting with the bumper-

to-bumper traffic in and out of the mall. Roland Naidoo from Northdale, who visited the Checkers Hyper to buy chairs, said: “It’s great that Pietermaritzburg now has a CheckersHyperstore.Itshowsgreat growth in the city and its economy. It’s also wonderful for consumers because the mall is situated in the CBD and more job opportunities are being created,” he said. Nombulelo Ndlovu, who came all

the way from Imbali, shared what was inside her trolley. “I bought three washing powders to keep my clothes fresh and clean, three bottles of cooking oil, maize meal, rice and other bargain combos,” she said. Shoprite Checkers divisional manager in KwaZulu-Natal Willem Hunlum said that they opened at 7.45am and the response from shoppers was excellent. Hunlum saidtheiraimwastohavethebiggest opening in KZN. Due to the large crowds, they were letting in groups of 50 shoppers at a time. Excited shoppers rushed to try and be one of the first to get the bargains they had heard about. Some shoppers looked bewildered as they seemed to be lost. Another Imbali resident, Zekhethele Xulu, who was concerned about safety since the mall is situated next to informal settlements, felt that the mall will have a high rate of crime. Answering the questions about safety, Ensure Security managing directorKevinConnollysaidthemall has a joint operation centre where authorities such as police, traffic police, paramedics and securities will be co-ordinating their duties. “There’s a lot of crimes occurring in different shopping centres in the country but we have put a lot of securityguardstopreventcrime,”he said. The opening of the new centre caused long traffic jams in the roads around the mall, including Manning Avenue.

IN a bid to encourage local residents, businessesandorganisationstostarttheirowncommunitygardenprojects, theMsunduziMunicipality will soon identify areas in the CBD suitable for a community garden project. In September, the integrated development plan business unit attended a workshop on hungerhostedbythePietermaritzburgAgency For Community Social Action (Pacsa). This workshop highlighted how difficult it is for poor households to afford a balanced meal and pointed out that there are many people in Pietermaritzburg who go to bed hungry on a daily basis. At the workshop, it was proposed that a community garden be planted on a visible space around the CBD to raise awareness on hunger. This is seen as a short term solution to feeding the poor as they will be getting vegetables from the garden. Deputy municipal manager for economic development Dr Ray Ngcobo said, “Pacsa identified poverty as one of the characteristics of our city and they agreed that there is a need to raise awareness in fighting poverty. One mechanism to do that is the use of open spaces forcommunitygardens, andtodealwithissues of food security.” Exco member Judith Lawrence said that she will look around her community to see if there are potential areas for a community garden project. Mayor Chris Ndlela said that each household, church, councillor’s office and workplaces should have community gardens. “It will answer many prayers and questions,” said Ndlela.

France NPO appeals for funding assistance NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za REACHOut,anonprofitorganisation, isappealingfor help from the citizens of the city, business people and anyone else who could assist in sponsoring them. The organisation is on the verge of closing down due to a shortage of funds, said founder, and executive director of Reach Out, Melanie du Plessis. The NPO is based in France location and it caters for needy children, the elderly and those who are unable to help themselves. Du Plessis said that due to the shortage of funds, the centre is in the process of closing down if no one is available to help. She said many of the children they cater for are sick and need special attention. “We have projects like sewing and gardening, and

we concentrate on poverty, family planning and education. We need money to continue with the work that we do. Should the centre close down, we will not be able to continue feeding our children from the child headed homes who come to the centre daily to get food. Without our help, they basically have nothing to look forward to for the day. “Every year, we host a Christmas party with hampersfortheelderly.Everyyear, therearehundreds of children and the elderly standing outside looking forward to getting a little something. We appeal to people to think of these little children, who are mostly heading their households, and the elderly,” she said. Du Plessis asked that local business people consider Reach Out as their charity for 2015. If anyone would like to assist the charity, contact du Plessis at 081 856 9187.

JIKA Joe residents came out in numbers to attend the first day of this year’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign which was at the Tatham Sports Grounds near the Jika Joe informal settlement. Colonel Paula Usher said that women and child abuse affects every member of the community. “Since none of us want to see any child or woman being abused, we need to work together so that we fight this abuse. We need to work together to make sure that this does not touch our communities. If a woman or a child has been abused, that affects the whole community,” she said. Loop Street police station commander Brigadier Vukani Mgobhozi said that even though police continue to fight rape in communities, the statistics keep increasing with time. “Males need to respect women,” he said. Xolani Zaca of the Family Violence, Child Protec tion and Sexual Offences (FCSC) unit, said that rape victims and perpetrators are both male and female. “Although we are fighting the abuse against women and children, it should be made known that even males do get abused by males and females. When I talk of rape, even women are capable of it. Moreover, men do get raped by other men. It is important for parents to know where their children

are at all times,” said Zaca. Mavis Mkhize from the Department of Education said that there are many rape victims at primary school levels. “These little children are afraid to report rape to their parents and we urge parents to play an active role,” said Mkhize. The event was hosted by the South African Police Service, Pietermaritzburg Social Crime Prevention in partnership with the following KZN Department of Health, KZN Department of Transport, Department of Community Safety and Liaison, KZN Social Development and KwaZuluNatal Christian Council (KZNCC).

VERY special concert, featuring Paul van Kemenade, Feya Faku, Sydney Mnisi, Louis Mhlanga and the band Soul ‘Afrique, will be staged at the Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown on Sunday. The concert will be to celebrate 20 years of a South Africa-Netherlands connection. In a press release, Rainbow co-ownerNeilComfort describedthis event as “a huge concert not to miss”. Since 1994, Dutch alto saxophonist and composer Paul van Kemenade and his quintet have had a strong relationship with the renowned South African musicians Faku, Mnisi, and South African based Zimbabwean Louis Mhlanga. “Van Kemenades’ album titled ‘Close Enough’ was selected as one of best albums of 2011 by the American Downbeat Magazine, along with five other artists. This year marks the 20th anniversary since Van Kemenade’s quintet played a sevenweek tour in South Africa and they were joined by Faku and late jazz saxophonist Zim Ngqawana. “Over the years, Faku and Van Kemenade kept playing together, with Mnisi joining in 1998,” said Comfort. Doors open at 1pm and the entrance fee is R120 at the door. You can get also your tickets at: www.webtickets.co.za/ event.aspx?itemid=409794326

27 YEAR old man from Panorama has made it as a finalist for the Mr SA pageant. Sibusiso Sibanda is appealing for votes which will keep him as a finalist, and hopefully help him win the title. Sibanda was born in the Eastern Cape before his family decided to make Pietermaritzburg their second home. Speaking to Echo, Sibanda said that being part of the pageant has been an amazing journey. He said challenging tasks push him to work harder. The B-com marketing graduate said that he is inspired by ordinary people. “They are the ones who motivated me to enter Mr SA. As a person who is always open for new adventure and challenges, I thought about it and I entered. “Modelling has been one of the things that I have always been interested in when I was growing up. Kubhekwe elomnqakiswano kumaSalga Games A

KUNGABAZEKI ukuthi imidlalo yebhola lomnqakiswano izothatha amehlo nezihlwele ezizobe ziyithamela zizobe zibulala inyoka. UkaNyambose uyavuma futhi ukuthi le midlalo isikhiqize abadlali abaningi asebemele uMzansi kumaProteas kanye neligi kazwelonke ebizwa ngeBrutal Fruit League kanti nasesifundazweni sabo bangenisile. “AmaSalga Games ayahlonishwa kakhulu ngoba ngaphandle kokunanaza, le midlalo isiphenduke isizindaesivundululaamakhonoagcine esesiza izwe lonke kanye nephulovinsi yethu. “Siyayibonga into eyenziwa omasipala bethu eKZN,” kusho uMthethwa. KumaSalga Games kuvamisile ukuthi ibhola lezinyawo lithathe amehlo amaningi, kodwa nebhola lomnqakiswano losiso (netball) libhekeke ukuthi lishube futhi lilandelwe yizihlwele eziningi. Lokhu kufakazelwa indlela okwenzeka ngayo izinto komasipala abayobe beshubana. Cishe futhi mhlawumbe abekho abaqeqeshi, abadlali nezikhulu ezizimisele njengalaba bantu balo mdlalo womnqakiswano.

The lives of unsung heroes PHOTO: JERRY BARNES

Umongameli woMgungundlovu District Netball Association uMa toli “Torishi “Nsele.

Ngonyaka odlule kulo mdlalo kwaba yiTheku eladla umhlanganiso emantombazaneni kwathi uThungulu lwawina ebafaneni kulo mdlalo (netball).Kulo nyaka le midlalo izobe isingethwe ngaphansi kukamaspala wesifunda uMzinyathi kusukela mhlaka 12 kuya ku- 14 December. Kanti imidlalo iyobe ithe chithi saka edolobheni laseDundee namaphethelo. - Jerry Barnes.

FOOTBALL is life. Thereisalotthatwecanlearnfromthis great game about life. December is traditionally a period of giving and festivities. I thought it proper to highlight the lives of unsung heroes that have made huge contributions to the lives of young people through football. Ronnie “Rees” Chetty has been around for a very long time. It does not always happen that a business person, together with his family, is willing to serve the poor and ordinary. There are young Black boys who are school teachers, engineers and other professionals who went through this guy’s football teams. I still have to meet a wife of the rich man that would be willing to wash football kits of poor children from informal settlements. These are some of the stories that are never told. Generally, rich people want to be club owners and bask in the glory of appearing on televisions and quoted in daily newspapers. Itisalsonotusualforaguywithnosons to be actively involved in training young footballers. Ronnie’s daughters are university graduates and yet continue to

serve others selflessly. This just goes to prove that football is a great teacher of life. How many people in top government positions will be willing to serve in committees of junior football clubs? Mr Joe Mazibuko, a former director of education in the uMgungundlovu district is a rare breed. I know guys who left football complaining about the workload upon being promoted to be HOD’s at school lev el. There are very few people who know his contributions to young footballers in Unit 3, Imbali. The late Nkosi Njilo, the only coach to ever win a national youth competition. How many people know that Bryce Moon was part of that under 12 team coached by the late Njilo? I salute Mr Nduna “Skhulu” Vilakazi of Special Eleven. He has served many generations of young people in the Edendale area. This is also the guy who held a top position in the education de partment. While most of us are obsessed with positions and selfinterests, he self lessly organised football under difficult conditions in Edendale. This also tells us something about the families of these men. It is important that young people, in particular, learn from these good examples. The greatest gift that we can ever ask for is the willingness to serve others. One great writer said that all of us can either give time, talent, treasure or touch. The above guys have given all the four to a number of generations over the past years. Football is crying for more of such men and women. Presently, the game is full of people who are exploiting football. Let us use it as tool of empowerment. Unzima lo mthwalo!
