Unions blame vacant posts NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

T

EACHER unions have cited the change of curriculum and unfilled educator vacancies, as contributory factors towards the decrease of the matric pass rate in KwaZulu Natal. The province dropped by 7.7% from 77.4% last year to 69.7% this year. Speaking to Echo, Deputy President of the National Teachers’ Union (Natu) Allan Thompson said that although they had expected a decline due to curriculum

changes, this was a significant one. “We are seriously disappointed as we had expected a decline but not as significant as this one. “Often when there is a curriculum shift, pupils become victims. In this province there has also been a complete failure of administration, with the department failing to fill vacancies. “In some cases, you find that classes are overcrowded because there are not enough staff. We want the department to advertise vacant positions and change temporary staff to permanent so

that there can be stability. “It must reduce the number of pupils in one class and increase the number of teachers.” Deputy Secretary of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) Bheki Shandu said: “Firstly we would like to thank those teachers who have gone the extra mile by having extra-classes outside their normal working hours to assist our pupils. However, as a union, we are deeply concerned by the decline since for the past five years, there has been a steady growth. “The new curriculum changes

presented a number of challenges and added new topics, particularly in mathematics, which added to the challenge. “The failure to fill critical posts remains a concern as only a few vacancies have been advertised. We also acknowledge the proposal by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to intervene, but she must not come with ready made decisions. “We all need to work together to look where we went wrong.” President of the National Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa)

Anthony Pierce said the decrease is a cause for concern, as the last time this happened was about 10 years ago. We need to conduct an investigation on the contributory factors of poor performances at certain schools. “Another major challenge is vacancies that have not been filled. MEC Peggy Nkonyeni needs to find ways to ensure that vacancies that remain unfilled are filled. Teachers also need to be upskilled, especially in mathematics where there is an indication of extremely poor performance,” he ended.

OLIDAYS are over and it’s back to reality for employees both in the private and government sector while matriculants are busy preparing for the real world. “My focus this year is to make sure that I double all my efforts in all that I do, especially in making sure that Maritzburg United is on display in terms of marketing. Secondly, I would like to see the project that I have started being completed in the Easters this year. I have started playing squash and my goal is to play three times a week. Both my wife and I have to continue support ing our son who is a cricketer. These are our plans this year.”

“This year the unit as a whole is hoping for more awareness campaigns that will help the youth in understanding the dangers of alcohol and other dangerous sub stances they end up using. We want them not only to understand the dangers these drugs are causing in their lives, but we want them to act posi tively and stop using these drugs. ”

PIETERMARITZBURG woman, who was recently awarded a Sir William Schlich medal by the University of Stellenbosch for her outstanding performance, has urged young women not to be afraid to venture into male dominated industries. Nonkululeko Ntinga (25) from Grange, who was doing her BSc degree in Forestry at the university, is the first South African woman to be given such an award by the university. The award is given to those students who achieve an aggregate of 70% and above consistently. She holds a similar award from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, after graduating cum laude in her three year national diploma in forestry in 2010.

Speaking to Echo, Ntinga said that getting this award is a validation that young women in South Africa are tapping into male dominated industries. “I feel honoured especially since this award is from an Afrikaans dominated university. “It is proof that young women are tapping into careers that were previously unknown. “Young women should know that there is more to life, and must not be scared to venture into male dominated industriesbecausetheyfeeltheyarenotgood enough.” Ntinga said although her focus this year will be on the working world, having started her internship with Mondi on Monday, she plans to do her PHD some day. She paid tribute to her family for their complete support throughout her studies.

Boxer store manager Darryl Croucamp said the ATM had been renovated just over a month ago and had brandnew computers and flat screens fitted. “Luckily, nothing else was damaged,” he said. Another store manager, Chris Majola, said Boxer had people working on fixing the lights and wires

already, but the repair of the ATM and the painting of the entrance to the store would take some time. “We apologise to customers for any inconvenience they may suffer,” he said. Majola said the ATM would not be open for a while. Majola said that while workers fixed the damaged entrance of the store, business would go on as usual.

ECHO

Thank you for your support THE Dlamini family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all who gave support during the most difficult time of the sudden death of Gabangaye Patrick Dlamini. Special thanks goes to the Department of Education, the uMgungundlovu District, and the MEC who personally came to grieve with the family and the Shelembe family for sticking with us throughout. To all colleagues, friends and comrades of our departed brother, we say thank you for all your comforting words and deeds. We thank also the pupils and the community members who came out in big numbers to bid farewell to the fallen hero. God be with all of you.

Questions that leave us mostly clueless

HE planet we find ourselves on is a wonder of the universe. The abundance of life on so insignificant a rock around a not at all spectacular second generation star is amiracleinitsownright.Thefactthat the life that exists on this planet is conscious, amazes me. We are not only alive but we are conscious of this, and we ask philosophical questions such as why are we here and where are we going. My favorite among such questions is why are we asking them in the first place? I don't blame religious people for having the idea of a soul, a sense ofpurposeandthissenseofsuperiority over all other life of which we find

ourselves with on this beautiful planet. We are seekers of knowledge and the limits to the world in which we live. We have tried to influence the world through alchemy and tried to understand where we stand in it through astronomy. We have even put ourselves at the centre of the universe in trying to understand it. I find myself thinking whether consciousness is merely a bundle of memories and instincts. The truth is that there is no true textbook definition of consciousness even though we have an idea of what constitutes a living self-aware being. What is your soul up to when you're asleep? What if we are really alone in this unthinkably vast universe? And what if we all die and it is left devoid? Now, do we measure consciousness in terms of intelligence? Ah, another term that has a biased definition and so we cannot say that a termite, whose numbers surpass us 20 million to one, is not intelligent as it is sophisticated, specialised it its own way, which ensures its own survival. So, what of souls? We have such

strong feelings on human life that many of us do not believe in death as the terminator, if you will, or the end of existence of a human life. So, we invent the soul and believe that as a person dies, their energy, or spirit, doesn’t.But,let'ssaythereisan afterlife, a heaven and hell. Whatofalltheotherthingsthatare alive on our planet? What place do

life. They do sometimes seem to have a life of their own, don't they. I am smiling (as opposed to laughing out loud) at that thought, but it does beg the question - where does inspiration come from? From God? Is it just an accident as some biologists believe life to be? The implications of suchanaccidentwouldeliminate any notion of a purpose of life or even the need for a God. Which brings another shaky question of whether the idea of God we have is the correct one. I do not think there will ever be an answer to this one as it can never be proven. We ask ourselves these questions not because we mean to answer them. Maybe one day, as in Douglas Adams' A Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, we might be able to construct a supercomputer that would help us answer the question on the purpose of “life, the universe and everything”. But until then, we will have to indulge ourselves in trying to answer them, and what a journey it has been so far. Who knows what we'll find when our telescopes finally detect a “hello” from deep space. Stay hungry. Stay curious.

THE TRUTH IS THAT THERE IS NO TRUE TEXTBOOK DEFINITION OF CONSCIOUSNESS EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT CONSTITUTES A LIVING SELFAWARE BEING

they have in heaven? Grass, as do many plants, are said to react to damage or injuries caused by things such as grass cutters, much like I would if I were attacked by a shark. Plants compete for resources such as sunlight and water. One could assume that plants can feel pain like all animals do and they too have a pronounced will to live. So, do they have souls? What's a vegetarian to do? Somehaveevensuggestedthatthe ideas in our heads are a form of alien

>> Twenty girls and fourteen boys born in KwaZuluNatal

Parents ‘blessed’ with their New Year babies

IETERMARITZBURG’S first New Year baby was born at five seconds after midnight at the Midlands Medical Centre. Samantha and Amileo Massey, from Raisethorpe, said that Alejandré, who weighed 3,02 kg, was their first child and the first grandchild for both their families. Midlands Medical Centre celebrated a second New Year’s Day baby when little Lwandle was born at 10.28am, weighing 2,95 kg. Proud mum Nonhlanhla Mkhize said it was very special to have a New Year baby, especially as Lwandle was her first child. Mediclinic welcomed their first arrival at 9.47am when Reshmika Rajah gave birth to a little boy weighing 2,35 kg. The newborn, who doesn’t yet have a name, is the first baby for Reshmika and her husband, Ashen, who live in Ferncliffe. Speaking about their baby, who was due on January 19, the Rajahs said: “It’s overwhelming to have a new baby anyway, let alone to have one on New Year’s Day.” OveratStAnne’sNetcareHospital, little Awonke Sishi waited a week to make his appearance. There was a second baby born at the hospital, a little girl, who weighed just 750 g. She is being cared for in the St Anne’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The dawn of 2015 saw the arrival

of some 34 babies at government hospitals throughout KZNl. KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said the province’s New Year’s Day babies included 20 girls and 14 boys, born between midnight and 10am.
