Althoughheisgratefulthatthetwomenhave been arrested for the attack, he said he will never forget the torture and humiliation he endured, allegedly at their hands. The 37-year-old panel beater said everything was going smoothly at work until two men walked into his place of employment on Violet Road in Northdale. “There was a dispute over payment and they beatupthemechanicwhowasworkingontheir vehicle, and then turned to me,” alleged Asan, speaking from his cramped room in Haniville. He said he was confused over why the axe-wielding men allegedly began hitting him all over his body. “I was crying and screaming for help, but no one came to help me,” said Asan.

The beating continued and just when he thought his attackers were done, they allegedly forced him to take his clothes off. “Theypouredpaintthinnersonmybodyand I felt like I was on fire. They then went for the air compressor and sprayed paint all over my body,” he said. A neighbour heard the commotion came to assist, but he too was allegedly beaten. “I tried to run away, I even climbed on the roof, but they came after me and continued to beat me,” said Asan. Another neighbour came to assist and that’s when “I ran for my life”, said Asan. He bumped into his colleague Sam Abdulsamad (30), who rushed him to Northdale Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. “The nurses tried to remove the paint, but they couldn’t, so they told me to go home. “When we got home, Sam came and helped me scrape the paint off using his nails. It was painful, but I couldn’t cry because I am a man,” said Asan. Asked about how he felt about his attackers, Asan said: “It was a near-death experience and I want them to be punished for what they did.”

EDDING bells are again ringing for the Zulu monarchy, this time for King Goodwill Zwelithini’s son Prince Nhlanganiso Zulu. The prince (41), who is the eldest son of Queen Buthle MaMathe of the Dlamahlahla palace, is set to marry Pietermaritzburg-born Wandile Mkhize (28). A traditional prenuptial ceremony of Umembeso was held at Mkhize’s Bisley home at the weekend. Mkhize, a communications officer at the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Department, has been in a romantic relationship with the prince since 2012. A large white marquee was erected last week and by Saturday, vehicles had parked behind each other for a stretch of about three kilometres on Alexandra Road. Black SUVs with tinted windows

and blue lights were parked outside the house and there was a jovial mood in the area. The groom said he was very excited. “It’s about time I got married. It’s my first marriage and I am ready for commitment,” said Prince Nhlanganiso Zulu. Royal household spokesperson Prince Mbonisi Zulu said: “It’s true, we invaded Pietermaritzburg this weekend.” He said the couple conducted an engagement ceremony in front of about 500 guests in the absence of the groom’s father, the king, who had other commitments. “The couple promised to wed each other. They are so in love and can’t wait to get married,” said Zulu. He said members of the royal family showed the Mkhize family a few dance moves. “We danced and sang and showed them how it is done. It was really beautiful,” he said.

Zulu said a date for the wedding had not been set. “Remember that he is the king’s son and we need to follow protocol. “We also need to make sure that the king is available for the ceremony,” explained Zulu, who added that the royal family was excited and ready to accept another bride. The bride’s younger brother, Chief Sibonelo Mkhize, said the Mkhize royal family was also excited for Wandile. “They met randomly but their love blossomed into PHOTO:SUPPLIED something much King Goodwill Zwelithini’s son, Prince Nhlanganiso Zulu is set to marry Pietermaritzburg more serious and we beauty, Wandile Mkhize. Bullet narrowly misses man in Scottsville attempted hijacking

KHANYISANI DLOMO A PIETERMARITZBURG man is still in shock after a bullet narrowly missed him in an attempted car hijacking incident at the weekend. Ntuthuko Ngubane (33) of Southgate had parked in Connaught Road in Scottsville when he was approached by two unknown men who tried to hijack his car at about 2.30am on Saturday. Ngubane, who works in the construction industry, said one of the

men hit the driver’s window with a stone, shattering the glass. “They tried to pull me out of the car, but I managed to reverse and drove off. They fired one shot and it almost hit me. “It hit the windscreen and the safetybelt.Iwasluckyitdidn’thitme,” he said. He said it was unclear whether the suspects had been following him as they had no car. Ngubane then drove to Alexandra Road police station to report the

NFLATION and the rising cost of providing quality tertiary education has forced some KwaZulu-Natal universities to drive up fees beyond 10%. University of KwaZulu-Natal increased both tuition and accommodation fees by 12% this year, and the sharp rise will see parents forking out once-off registration payments of R3 750 for courses and an additional R2 750 fee for students requiring accommodation. University spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the increment was inspired by careful consideration of the social circumstances of students and wider consultation with university stakeholders. “Inflation has negatively affected the allocation to the university from the state, makingthecurrenttuitionfeespaidbystudents inadequate,” she said. “It is imperative that adequate financial resources are available to ensure that our degrees remain highly competitive and respected globally.” The institution received more than 90 000 applications for the 8 400 available spaces in the undergraduate academic programmes. It provides accommodation for 12 086 students at on-campus and off-campus residences. “Each year there is always more demand thansupplyforon-campusaccommodation.To help curb the matter, the university makes use of private accommodation in and around our campuses.” Unisa spokesperson Martin Ramotshela said they received 168 400 applications last year, made up of 93 739 new applicants, and 74 661 returning students. “From applications received, 89 046 met the minimum requirements. All these applicants will be accommodated during the current registration period, provided they still satisfy the admission requirements.” The universities said students can register online to avoid long queues. Central Application Office (CAO) spokesperson George van der Ross said they processed 130 480 applications for the four KZN institutions. Social work programmes proved popular, receivingthemostapplications, whileinformation technology received the fewest. Nearly all courses received more applications than in 2014. UKZN received the largest chunk of applicants, with 87 493 forms already processed. The DA has urged Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande to request emergency funding from Treasury to aid the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), to support incoming first-year students. Previously, the department said it would provide R10,2 billion this year in funding through NSFAS to tertiary institutions. However, Professor Belinda Bozzoli, DA shadow minister of Higher Education, said it would not be enough. “We estimate that an additional R1 billion in

emergency funding will be needed to support those students who achieved bachelor passes to go to university,” she said. As students are desperate to find places at tertiary institutions, the IFP warned first-time entrants to be wary of bogus higher learning institutions.

IFP MP Mkhuleko Hlengwa said students and parents must do thorough background checks of institutions “making very bold promises”. “They are nothing but fly-by-night institutions hell bent on taking advantage of poor and desperate people.”

CAR accident, that almost took his life, did not deter Mxolisi Ndlovu from Mcoseleli Secondary School from rising above circumstances and scoring four distinctions in his matric results. The 18-year-old from the rural Maqongqo has since become the pride of the village after obtaining A’s in Zulu, life orientation, business studies and economics. Following a car accident towards the end of 2013 that left him with a leg and head injury, Ndlovu was in and out of hospital in his matric year as he suffered from migraines. Ndlovu hopes to study for a BA

degree in international studies. Speaking to Echo about his achievement, he said: “After sustaining a head injury, I was scared that my brain had been affected because I had severe headaches. I was in and out of hospital, but I used every chance that I got to catch up with my studies. “For me, studying for my matric year could never be too early. I started at the beginning of the year. At school, we did not have many resources, but with the help of the teachers, I used the few that we had to my advantage.” Advising other matric pupils from underprivileged communities, he said: “Your background should not determine who you will be in life. In life, there will always be people who

will be more privileged than you are, so instead of complaining, you must use the little that you have to be where you want to be. “Listen attentively in class and do not be afraid to ask for help from teachers while there is still time. Lastly, whatever pain you endure, do not be caught up too much in self pity, but rather use those circumstances to motivate yourself.”

LIFE-CHANGING experience. That’s what has been promised future visitors to the Nelson Mandela capture site in Howick, which is set to receive a R75 million facelift and will boast a tunnel under the R103 linking the current exhibition and sculpture site with the capture site near the railway line. A multi-purpose centre estimated to cost around R45 million is already under construction at the historic site. Another estimated R30 million will be spent over the next few years on developments including the construction of the tunnel. The multi-purpose centre is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Site manager Christopher Till said that the renovations are part of changes to ensure visitors understood not just the history of Nelson Mandela, but his history in the context of KwaZulu-Natal. The foundation of the centre has been laid and the concrete pillars have already been erected. The centre is a significant structure measuring at least 30 metres in length. The construction site is protected from the prying eyes of the public by corrugated iron sheeting. Construction workers had been on leave and were back on site this week. Till said the centre would educate visitors and eradicate myths. “Many people still believe that Mandela was arrested at Liliesleaf [farm] when the ANC leaders were

Recently they brought a tourist bus which was designed with an image of the sculpture on its side … we want to make the heritage site an exciting place,” he said. Till said they do not want to commercialise the site because that is not what Mandela would have wanted. He said there was much land around the site and it would be used for visitors, music concerts and enjoyment by families. There would be an exhibition about Mandela including a replica of his cell at the capture site plaque near therailwaylineontheothersideofthe R103. “There will be a tunnel dug to connect the centre with the plaque across [the road]. Till said an indigenous garden would lead to the sculpture, so the visitors could “feel” Mandela’s long walk to freedom. “The facility is going to be built to accommodate the tourists that we get here. We get busloads of local and international tourists and this will also encourage those passing by to come in … Children could be brought here to learn about Mandela,” he said. LLEGAL electricity connections claimed three lives in Pietermaritzburg last week, the most recent being Mthobisi Mokoena who died in Copesville. Mokoena (23) was electrocuted and died on the spot in the Swapo informal settlement - less than a day after Nontobeko Mjoli (five) was electrocuted at Jika Joe informal settlement. Mokoena’s sister, Cecelia Mofokeng, said he had finished washing his clothes and attempted to hang them on what he thought was the washing line. “He thought the illegal wires were a washing line and he was struck down and died,” said Mofokeng, who fought back tears and struggled to talk. Mokoena was new to the area and had started renting a shack there last week. He was still clutching the wires with both hands and facing the sky, with his wet washing a metre away from him. Both poles holding up the wires that struck him down had collapsed. Scores of shack dwellers, some of whom had babies on their backs, surrounded the body in disbelief. At the scene, ER24 spokesperson Andrew Rogers said: “He suffered burnmarksonhishandsandarm. We have to wait for Eskom to switch off the power. We can’t do anything because we don’t know which wires are live.” He added that the state of wiring in the area was terrible and it’s very dangerous.

More death from wires Oblivious to the incident, barefoot children were seen sitting next to multiple live wires. “We are scared. We just jump over them,” said one child. With wires leading from one shack to another over her head, a woman at the scene was overheard saying: “Thereisnothingyoucando.Wewant to watch TV.” Another man was electrocuted and died in Swapo last Monday. Msunduzi Municipality mayor Chris Ndlela said he had not received a report about the string of illegal connection deaths but offered condolences to affected families. “People must refrain from illegally connecting electricity to their households to avoid these nasty incidents. It’s very painful that people continue to lose their lives,” Ndlela said. He said the city has plans to electrify all informal settlements, such as Jika Joe, Swapo and Ezinketheni.

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

NONTOBEKO

Mjoli (5) from the Jika Joe informal settlement is the latest victim to be electrocuted by live wires connected illegally. The incident happened last week Wednesday at the back of the informal settlement near the pit toilets, where Mjoli is believed to have tripped over live wires. Mjoli’s aunt, Matsepang Dlamini, said that the deceased had spent the day with her guardian while her mother was at work. “Every morning, her mother would leave her at a guardian’s house because her day care is still closed. Every morning after her mother has gone to work she would come knocking on my door to ask if her relatives had woken up. “On the day she died, she never came knocking. I thought she had gone to play with other children. I was not that worried because I knew that someone was looking after her. “Around 1pm, someone came to my house and told me that he saw Nontobeko near the pit toilets. I quickly put my shoes on and headed to the scene. I saw her body and couldn’t stop crying. It was painful. I did not even know that there were live wires by the pit toilets. She must have tripped over the naked wires because they are not easily noticeable” said Dlamini. She said that Mjoli had left her guardian’s house to visit the toilet. She said that her shoes were found meters away from the scene. Mjoli’s family is still busy with funeral plans and she will be laid to rest this Saturday. Mjoli had been a frequent visitor of the non-profit organization, Mama Ntombi’s Community Projects (MNCP).

Illegal connections claims the life of Jika Joe child

NQOBILE MTOLO

The body of a 23yearold man, Mthobisi Mokoena, lies on the ground in Copesville after he was electrocuted by what he thought was a washing line.

The organisation deals with the development of orphaned and vulnerablechildrenindisadvantaged communities in Pietermaritzburg. MNCP’s programme manager Sandra Pillay said, “This child has been coming to our programme. We bought the family groceries and we prayed with them. We are saddened by what has happened,” she said. “She was a lively person and we will miss her so much,” said Dlamini. The Maritzburg Fever reporter visited the Jika Joe informal settlement with the MNCP representatives. Due to prominent illegal connections at almost every corner of every shack, one had to tread carefully when walking between the shacks. Jika Joe community leader Thembinkosi Magagula said that it is sad to note that last year, another child was electrocuted at the same spot where Mjoli’s body was found. He said that proper housing is the only answer to solving illegal connections. “We do not know when illegal connections will end. A lot of people have lost their lives in the process and it is even sadder when it is young children that die. “However, older people are also victims. This applies mostly to those who are visitors and who are not informed about illegal connections at Jika Joe.” A video of the scene can be viewed via the Echo website www.echopmb.co.za. Last week a Copesville man, Mthobisi Mokoena (27), was also electrocuted after mistaking live wires for a washing line. This happened at the Swapo informal settlement. It has been reported that one man was also electrocuted in Swapo on Monday.

>> ILLEGAL ELECTRICTY CONNECTIONS HAVE CLAIMED THE LIVES OF A NUMBER OF PEOPLE OVER THE LAST MONTH, THE MOST RECENT BEING MTHOBISI MOKOENA WHO DIED IN COPESVILLE LESS THAN A DAY AFTER NONTOBEKO MJOLI WAS ELECTROUCTED AT THE JIKA JOE INFORMAL SETLLEMENT.

E an artist who took his performances at school assembly seriously, and those are the unforgettable moments about Sandile Khawula who has just dropped his 12 track gospel album. The Port Shepstone songbird, who has made Pietermaritzburg his second home, has a new album called Isimanga Somuntu, which means an “Amazing Person”. Asked why he went with the name “Isimanga Somuntu’’, he said he refers to God as an amazing Saviour who loves all people unconditionally, regardless of how they challenge him through sin. Khawula is a saved Christian and he strongly believes in God. “I started singing in primary school when I was in my early grades. I use to perform in the school assembly to entertain pupils and teachers. One of my favourite performances was when I sang a song by Chicco Thwala. That

In 2002, he decided to join the school choir which performed classical genre and that is how his marriage with music started His album is made up of 12 gospel tracks. “I promise people that they will enjoy all the tracks on the album. The album is out and people can get a copy by contacting my manager, Lungile Dube. “To further my passion in music, I am doing a diploma in Jazz music with the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Howard College). I want to educate the younger generation and motivate them on why it is important to follow their dreams and passion, and to never give up until they reach what they have they aimed for,” he said. OST PSL players around the country took a long and well deserved break from any activities during the Christmas holidays, but not the Lidgetton-born and Mpumalanga Black Aces striker Mabhuti Khenyeza. During the festive season, Khenyeza hosted his annual Mabhuti Khenyeza soccer tournament at Wadley Stadium, an event officially supported by local businessman Poobie Naidoo of Poobie Naidoo Sports. Khenyeza, who owns a team called Mzavi FC, is a welltravelled athlete who staged the event that brought together thousands of soccer followers and clubs from all over Pietermaritzburg for two weeks. He says that staging an event during the festive season can be a life saving exercise. “Just imagine how many youngsters came together to play or stayed away from the road or from social ills. “It may look small but I was glad that the community, especially the youth, were able to take part in sport,” said Khenyeza.

He is pictured with Poobie Naidoo Sports senior buyer Marvin Naidoo (L) and Vincent Majola (floor senior staff). Naidoo said that Khenyeza was one of best role models in the city, and his positive ideas need to be supported. “Look, this is a community project and as I said before,

anything that is uplifting to the community we will always be part of,” said Naidoo. The overall winners were Mzavi, who outsmarted the event crowd pullers and Edendale-

based Juventus in the final. Khenyeza says he would like to his annual event to grow in future and invited more local businesses to join hands. -Jerry Barnes

Mandela marathon winner to race in Mumbai on Sunday BULWER-BORNThobaniChagwe, who became an instant household name after winning last year’s annual Mandela Day Marathon, will be pounding the streets of Mumbai on Sunday. Last year, the Nkwezela boy surprised himself and other elite athletes when he outpaced the whole pack to win the popular race outside Howick. According to Chagwe, his training ground was around Mkhambathini late October (2014) and right up to the festive season. “We decided to train around the Mkhambathiniareabecauseofthe hills and quietness. In that area, wewereabletotrainwithoutbeing disturbed. “Around Mkhambathini, the training route is very challenging. It’s a good and safe area to stage a

marathon,” said Chagwe. Chagwe’s training partners were the likes of Silindile Gubese and S’thembiso Ntombela. “We used to run 40km every morningandweonlytrainedinthe morning,” he said. Chagwe said he will be running out of the country for the first time, but is prepared to learn and compete. “I know it will be tough out there. The conditions are totally different to South Africa, but I am prepared to go there and make my presence felt. I am going there to compete with international athletes and also gain some experience,” said Chagwe. The Mandela Day Marathon reigning champion says he will be happy to clock around 2hrs 15 or at least 2hrs 20 in Mumbai. - Jerry Barnes.
