Laba bazali abebewotha ubomvu kuthiwa bebekhala ngokuthi abantwana babo bashode ngamamaki amancane ukuze baphase, ngakho kumele bafakelwe ukuze badlulele phambili. Kwenzeka lokho nje, kuthiwa bese kunamahlebezi asabalele okuthi omunye wothisha wafakela abafundi bakaGrade 10 no 11 amamaki evile kunalawo ababewatholile ezifundweni zeMaths nePhysical Science ngonyaka odlule. Kuthiwa uthishanhloko walesi sikole uMnuzBoyMajoziuqaleukusolaukuthikukhona okushaya amanzi ngoba ebona lezi zifundo zombili ziphaswe kakhulu kunokujwayelekile kunezinye izifundo. Ube esenza uphenyo, lapho ethole ukuthi amamaki abebhalwe ebhukwini lesikole (schedule) abengahambisani kunalawo asemaphepheni abo. Kubikwa ukuthi okufike kwadina kakhulu abafundi ukuthi lo thisha wayebatshele ukuthi baphasile ngaphambi kokuthi bathole imiphumela yabo yokuphela ko nyaka ngoZibandlela (December), okubathusile uma sebethola imiphumela yokuphela konyaka athi bafeyilile. Okhulume nephephandaba i-Echo kepha ongathandanga ukuthi kudalulwe igama lakhe uthe: “Into eyenze ukuthi abazali babhikishe ukuthi bese bekhala ngokuthi kunezingane eseziphinde lama banga iminyaka ilandelana, ngoba kuthiwa zishoda ngamamaki amabili kuya kwamathathu. “Ngokwaboisikolesibafeyilisengamabomu labafundi, njengoba kube nothisha obekwazi ukufakela abanye amamaki.”

Ngokusho kwalo mthombo, lo thisha owenze lokhu akayedwa, njengoba kunabanye ababili abavelile abagcine ngokuthi baxolise. Kusolwa yena lo thisha ngokuhlanganisa abazali ukuze batoyitoyele ukuthi abafundi banikwe imiphumela engeyona ethi bafeyilile bebe bephasile. Ilunguleschoolgoverningbody(SGB)uNksz Thabsile Tsekeletsa uthi bona njengesigungu esengamele ukuphathwa kwesikole basola ukulova kwabafundi nokungahambeli kwabazali imihlangano, njengembangela yokufeyila kwabafundi bala mabanga. Uthe: “Ukube abafundi bayazimisela, bayawenza umsebenzi ngabe akufikanga nanokufika ekutheni kuze kube nombhikisho kuthiwa bafeyilisiwe. Abafundi bakulesi sikole bayadojabahlalaenkundleniyezemidlaloi-Ni-Radebe kuze kuphele usuku. Abazali abazihluphi ngokuhambela imihlangano nokwazi ukuthi izingane zabo ziqhuba kanjani. Ukuba ziyazimisela ngabe akufikanga la.” Usekela sihlalo weSGB uNksz Busi Mbokazi uthe: “Asikwazi ukungenelela ezindabeni ezithinta indlela yokufundisa esikoleni (curriculum), kodwa ngokocwaningo kuyakhombisa ukuthi isikole asenzi kahle kwimaths ne science. Kumele sithole izindlela zokuqinisekisa ukuthi abafundi bathola usizo oludlulele kulezi zifundo. Sizokwenza nezinhlelo zokuthi kube nabafundi abasuka ezikhungweni zemfundo ephakeme abangalekelela abafundi ngezimpelasonto. Siyafisa ukuba uMnyango wezeMfundo uphenye kabanzi ngalolu daba, futhi uma uthisha etholakala enecala kube nezinyathelo ezithathwayo. “Sesikhulume kaningi ukuthi kube khona into eyenziwayo ngale nkundla abafundi abacasha kuyona, njengoba kunopotsho kodwa asitholi ukusizakala.” Okhulumela uMnyango wezeMfundo uMnuz Sihle Mlotshwa uthe lolu daba lusadluliselwe kwizinhlaka ezifanele ukuze ziphenye.

Ngcobo said that they will investigate factors which may have caused under-collection. “The collection rate for December was very low and it should not have been like that, taking into account that people get bonuses in December. Nxele passed with A’s in all his subjects - mathematics, physical science, English, geography, life orientation, IsiZulu and life sciences. “My mother, who is a domestic worker, managed to get a small loan from the bank. I’m a hard worker and I promise that if I’m offered help I will never disappoint, but I will work harder. “Helping me would also be a benefit to others as I will strive to work hard in changing the lives of the people in my area. “It has always been my dream to study medicine and to see an increase number of young people in the field of medicine. How to deal with load shedding ECHO REPORTER

>>news@myecho.co.za

SINCE 2008, the country has been experiencing a crisis of power cuts and it doesn’t look like a situation that will be sorted out any time soon. In a recent statement, Eskom urged all South Africans to partner with them to save 10% of electricity usage throughout the day. They added that saving electricity will make it significantly easier to manage the power system during this challenging time. As power cuts

continue, here are some tips on how to deal with load shedding: •Ensure your cellphone is always fully charged when power is available. •Ensure your car, bakkie or bike always has petrol in the because petrol stations cannot pump fuel during power outages. •Ensure you have enough cash because ATM’s cannot operate without electricity. •Release automatic electric garage door mechanisms so that you can gain access to your property

during a power outage. •Release electric security gates and switch to manual operation to avoid being either locked out of or in your home. •Keep a torch with fresh batteries by your bedside at all times. •GetasmallLPgaslamp, asitgives good quality lighting for a large area. •Boil water and keep it in thermos flasks for hot drinks for when the power is scheduled to be switched off. •Prepare meals beforehand in case of power cuts. •Keep refrigerator and freezer

doors closed. A power outage lasting four hours should not cause food spoilage, and a freezer should keep frozen food safe for at least a day. It is a good idea to have alternative snacks available that do not need refrigeration. •Fill plastic containers with water, still leaving some space inside each container for expansion during freezing in a deep freeze or the freezer compartment of your fridge. This frozen bottled water will help keep food cold during a power outage.

Andiswa Mchunu from Hopewell: "I think the SABC does not have a right to cancel Pastor Zondo's slot because of a video that was circulating on social networks. They should look at the good work that he has done for the station, instead of focusing on the bad. Nobody is perfect, even the Bible says so. He was naked in the comfort of his home and we consider this an invasion of privacy. There are so many people who have survived this far because of his moti vation. We still need him."

OB seekers need to watch out for job scams. Taryn Heathcote from recruitment and staffing company Express Employment Professionals, said that there are a couple of scams on the market which include fax to email scams, interview or training payment scams and work-fromhome opportunities, to mention but a few. She advised job seekers to investigate the advertised position and the potential employer. “Bear in mind that many companies do use the 086 fax numbers legitimately and professionally for business, so trust your gut and employ your investigativeskillsbeforeyoumakeajudgment call. “Fax to e-mail services are used by these scammers and the fax number issetuptoincurchargesbeyondstandardrates, sothejobseekergetsovercharged on their phone bill and the “recruiter” earns revenue for every page that gets faxed through for the fake position,” explained Heathcote. To avoid being a victim of this scam, shesaiditis importanttoverify if the company’s contact details actuallyexist, andtocheckfortheVAT number. “Make sure that fax is not the only way to communicate with them. Insist on e-mailing your CV and if they still insist that you should fax your CV, they’re probably not legit,” said Heathcote.

Job seekers warned to be aware of employment scams PHOTO:SUPPLIED

To avoid being job scam victims, job seekers need to investigate the advertised position and the potential em ployer.

Another employment scam involves job seekers paying for training or registration before a job interview. Heathcote said that one should not pay a recruiter to get employedortobeinterviewedforthat matter. “Legitimate recruiters will not ask you a fee to get registered on their database, because they are getting paid by companies to recruit staff for them,” she said. She also advised job seekers to guard against illegal work-fromhome opportunities which include typing work, addressing envelopes of any kind, addressing labels of any kind, filling of envelopes of any kind, administrative opportunities, compiling data and direct sellers of consumer goods that do not honestly identify themselves, the firm and their product offering in their advertisements. She said that since 2011, 99% of work-from-home opportunities have

been outlawed by the South African government. “Being involved in an illegal work-from-home opportunity is a criminal offence and is punishable by a fine not exceeding R200 000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years, or both a fine and imprisonment,” warned Heathcote. Job scams are also linked to identity theft. “Some people in these job advertisements ask for photos along with your CV. Be vigilant. Don’t send any photos via the internet and certainly don’t provide any other details such as your ID or home address. “This can lead to identity theft and fraud which is a huge threat. Watch out for spelling, grammar, and punctuationmistakesinjobads.Itnot only indicates a lack of professionalism, but also betrays a scam artist’s potential lack of education.”

University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) graduate Slindile Bhengu is one of many graduates in South Africa who are unemployed. After finishing her studies at one of the high schools in the Mkhambathini area, she enrolled for a teaching diploma. She matriculated in 2000. “At high school we never received career guidance and we were never exposed to a variety of careers. “By the time we matriculated, we never really knew what we wanted to study at a tertiary level. “In 2001 and 2002, I enrolled forateachingdiplomaatoneofthe teaching colleges. I was always discouraged by a lot of people who told me that the teaching profession was fading and that by the time I finished my diploma, I would not get employment,” said Bhengu. Without any proper guidance, Bhengudroppedoutofcollegeand changed to what she viewed as a ‘sophisticated course’. “I studied psychology but due to financial restrictions, I dropped out. I received credit for the

modulesI hadpassedandin2004, I managed to obtain a human resources diploma from UKZN,” said Bhengu. Bhengu spent most of her time applying for internships but she never received any feedback. “I was unemployed until I passed the age limit for internships,” said Bhengu. She only got employed seven years ago by a retail company as a cashier. “I have given up looking for another job. Maybe it was just not meant to be. Maybe I need to focus on the job I have and make it work for me,” said Bhengu. Bhengu is not alone. It has been reported that last year, the number of discouraged job seekers increased by more than 200 000. The South African unemployment rate decreased to 25,40% in the third quarter of last year from 25,50% in the second quarter of 2014. Should EFF overalls and ECHO 15 gumboots be kicked out of parliament? maritzburg

EFF convener in the KZN province Vusi Khoza say they will not abide by the possible rule from parliament to ban them from wearing overalls and gumboots in parliament. Parliament is set to finalise the rule by next month.

Stop the EFF members from wearing overalls >>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za NOMPENDULO Ngubane spoke to young people on the street to find out their thoughts on the possible EFF clothing ban.

Mlamuli Muthwa: “Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members must respect parliament. They should have never been allowed to even start wearing overalls and gumboots in parlia ment. I respect the rule and I hope it is passed. They have made parlia ment a joke.” PHOTO:NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

Thembelihle Sibisi: “A person’s character is displayed by his or her appearance, which includes the way they dress. You can wear over alls when you are on duty, because it is required. Wearing overalls and gumboots in parliament is disrespectful. They may fool us and say they are doing it for the people, but they have their own reasons for doing that.” PHOTO: NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

Zodwa Zuma:

Melusi Memela:

“I agree with the rule of trying to stop EFF members from wearing over alls in parliament. What does one tell the young and growing generation if all we see on television are red overalls in parliament. It was disrespectful from the beginning and shouldn’t have been allowed. It’s wrong and it portrays a bad image of our country.”

“No one is asking them to wear suits but they should dress appropriately. As much as they are arguing that they way they dress has nothing to do with how they behave, to them, it has everything to do with how they dress. They have caused so much drama in parliament and that has everything to do with how they present themselves by the way they dress and speak.”

HE Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the KZN province say that the African National Congress (ANC) will have to kick them out of parliament and they will resist the rule to ban them from wearing overalls and gumboots. Last Wednesday it was reported that sub committee chairperson Richard Mdakane revealed that this year, they would be strict about the way Members of Parliament (MPs) dress. This includes banning EFF members in parliament from wearing overalls and gumboots in parliament. The EFF’s convener in KZN, Vusi Khoza, told Echo that the ruling party cannot dictate how they should dress. He said instead of discussing important issues like education, the ANC is “whining” about issues that don’t matter. He bashed on the ANC for turning a blind eye on matters that affect the education system in the country. ‘There are schools that have not been delivered text books and some don’t have toilets,’ said Khoza.

“There are so many issues they should be discussing. In the education system we are faced with so many irregularities. There are still schools without toilets, books that have not been delivered and over expenditure. “Visiting schools as the EFF, we are exposed to great disappointments. Their focus should be on how they can better the education system that has gone on its knees,” he said. Khoza said that the ANC has dictated enough and it will not succeed in telling them how they should be dressed. “They have not been exemplary in their suits and ties, all we have seen is corruption,’ he said. “People cannot be judged based on how they are dressed. They are trying to apply the rules that were used in the old government and it is not going to work. “If we allow this, it means they will tell us when to sleep or wake up, they will even tell us what to eat. As the EFF in the province of KZN, we will not let that happen. “We are not working for the ANC or parliament. We are working for the people who voted for us in May so the ANC must forget that they will win with their dictatorship,” added Khoza

Creative arts college for PMB EDWARD WEST

S

TUDENTS should forget about finishing their courses and heading to Johannesburg for a job and rather focus on starting their own companies. This was said at the launch of the Creative Arts College in Pietermaritzburg recently, the first tertiary education institution in the city that focuses on preparing students for a career in the broader media industry. The college in Victoria Street is an expansionoftheCreativeArtsCollege in Durban - the colleges represent the education division of the South African Film Institute. College academic facilitator Nivashni Pillay said registration for the college in Pietermaritzburg was already going “exceptionally well”. All the courses are designed to prepare students for the industry, and, according to Pillay, each course even has an entrepreneurship module to encourage students to start their own businesses once they have finished their courses. The courses include music production, movie technology, graphic design, animation, journalism, beauty therapy, performing arts, fashion design, radio production, advertising, scriptwriting, and DJ and music industry operations. The college is accredited through

through UK-based City & Guilds, an international education agent. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) deputy director-general

Mzwakhe Lubisi said creative arts was one of the sectors that the governmentwaspushinghardtohelp re-industrialise the economy.

“We want you to get away from the mentality that you are leaving this college to get a job in Johannesburg. We want you to start your own company,” he said. Lubisi said the DTI had a range of incentives for entrepreneurs, such as grants for the formation of co-operative, that young entrepreneurs could use to form their own companies in the creative arts. There were also, for example, film production incentives. “We want to see a proliferation of co-operatives and we want to help you to grow them,”he said. Kevin Pallium, chief executive officer of the Creative Arts College, said one of South Africa’s competitive edgesintheworldwasitsrichcultural diversity, as expressed in its arts and media. He said in this country people only associate factories, farms and offices with industry, but the Create Arts College was helping to create a platformtoestablishabiggercreative arts industry. “The power of the creative media is known to the powerful,” and western countries were increasingly turning to Africa for renewed creative stimulation. “It must remain under our ownership,” he said. One of the college’s mottos is: “Choose a job you love and you never have to work a day in your life.”

The lead character is none other than Nkululeko Mthembu, who was born and bred in Nhlazuka in Richmond where the documentary was filmed. The documentary highlights Mthembu’s negotiations on a learning journey about indigenous music, preparing the event and learning about Inkosi Dingane. He (Mthembu) had invited Ingoma groups to come and be part of the day. “The weather was not on our side but Mthembu received a lot of support and nine out the 10 groups he invited did show up. “In summary, the documentary is about Mthembu and his preparations for the big event he was going to host in December. “The camera catches the moments where he tries to negotiate about his event with

Promoting local music talent to the masses

HILE radio presenting is about talent and passion, legendary radio presenter VusiLetsoalohasstartedabroadcasting academy in a bid to provide skills development to aspiring presenters in historically disadvantaged communities. The award winning radio personality, with 22-years radio broadcasting experience, will conduct workshops across the province, starting on 16 February. In an interview with Echo, Letsoalo said this will be the first of its kindinSouthAfricawherepeoplewill be offered a course on the basics of radio presenting. He said that while tertiary institutions focus on radio production, there is very little on radio presenting. “After listening to many young presenters from different radio stations, I realized that there was something missing. There are so many unskilled presenters, and these workshops are aimed at bridging that gap. This course is about unearthing young talent and developing it.” Students will be taught on the basics of radio presenting, voice projection, news reading, setting up interviews, how to conduct interviews, microphone techniques, ratings and research, air checks, producing a show, script writing and editing, production and programming, management structure, sales

BRIAN Khoza, famously known in the entertainment circlesasBriandotKhoza, has established a platform that will enable local hip hop, rap and poetry artists to market their talents. The Brian dot Khoza’s Rhythm And Poetry Session events will be held every last Saturday of the month at The Red Door in Quarry Road. The upcoming music and poetry session will be on 31 January and will run from 1pm to 4pm, with an entry fee of R50. “I love music. I love hip hop and poetry. Without a doubt, we have a lot of hidden talent in Pietermaritzburg but what we lack is the platform. Most local artists relocate to Gauteng to establish their careers because they do not know how to get to the next level. This platform will introduce artists to the local crowd and will give them exposure to other opportunities,” said Khoza. He also added that the rhythm and poetry sessions will allow artists to sell their music to crowds in attendance. “We welcome anyone who likes hip hop music and poetry from any race group, because music is universal,” said Khoza. The artist lineup for 31 January event include the likes of Sboniso ‘Mic G’ Ngubane, Ndumiso Zondi and

He is a provocative spoken word artist who uses his poetic license accordingly, said Khoza. The last act of the day will be DeeKay, who will be representing the female hip hop artists in PMB. Her career highlights include releasing the Gusheshe remix and getting co-signs from Cassper Nyovest, Sizwe Dlomo and Scoop Makhathini. “In a male dominated genre, I’m not just trying to break barriers and be the best female rapper out there, that

doesn’t mean a thing to me. I’m a rapper before I am anything else so I want to be one of the best rappers in the continent period,” she stated. The Rhythm And Poetry Sessions will be a build-up to an annual Hip Hop Festival called the Rhythm And Poetry Festival. “The Rhythm And Poetry Sessions will feature threehours of listening sessions, live performances and music sales by artists in a reputable, safe concert venue with a bar and pool tables to relax while being entertained. Opening acts will do brief performances to warm the audience up. The host of Rhythm And Poetry sessions will be the owner and founder of Fusion Productions SA, Neliswa Mntungwa. “We want to create a buzz in Pietermaritzburg,” said Khoza. Will Ford Fusion go nuclear in SA?

S

UZUKI has launched a budget hatchback, the Celerio, in South Africa at the expense of its Alto range. Suzuki now has two sub-R130 000 cars – theCelerioandtheSplash, thelatterlaunched in 2014. The Hatchback is available in two specifications (GA and GL), two transmission options (five-speed manual and new automated manual transmission), each with the same one-litre, three-cylinder, petrol engine. The Celerio is 3.6m long, 1.6m wide and 1.5m high - that’s 100mm longer and 70mm higher than the outgoing Alto though it’s the same width. Its wheelbase has increased by 65mm to 2.4m,thosewheelsshodwith165/70R14tyres on 14” steel rims - alloys optional. The three-cylinder, 55kW/90Nm engine drives through a five-speed gearbox called by Suzuki an “automated manual transmission” - actually a constantly variable transmission (CVT) with five preselected ratios activated by a shifter, boldly described by Suzuki as “achieved via an electro-hydraulic actuator, making the use of a clutch pedal unnecessary”. One is acutely aware of the Celerio’s 55kW, especially when climbing a hill or carrying a full complement of passengers. Overtaking requires thought and ample space.

The instrument binnacle gains a rev counter, external temperature display, four power windows, central locking and a gear-shift indicator on the AMT. The steering wheel gains tilt adjustment, Bluetooth and a four-speaker radio/CD audio system with MP3, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. FORD has launched it’s hot new sedan in Cape Town and it’s a looker of note, packed with safety features and loads of technology. The new Ford Fusion, says the automaker, has refinement and craftsmanship, technologiesincludingFord’sadaptivediodeheadlights and multi-contour seats, and sophisticated design. Mark Kaufman, Ford SA’s vice-president for marketing, sales and service, told Wheels24: “The Fusion is the most technologically advanced Ford vehicle yet to South Africa. From convenience technologies such as Sync 2 and a new active park assist to safety technologies including pre-collision alert with a head-up display, the Fusion adds a range of safety and security features for city drivers.” The car has a choice of three petrol engines - a 1.5 and two two-litre EcoBoost engines - and a high-powered two-litre TDCi diesel engine that delivers 132kW/400Nm. The Fusion has a sports-coupe profile with a low roof and a lean profile sculpted to convey ‘visual lightness’, says Ford. “The sophisticated and technical front-end design has a more prominent trapezoidal grille, a power-dome bonnet and adaptive slim-line, laser-cut, headlights.”

The cabin has a digital-analogue instrument cluster and a sleek wraparound centre console design that delivers a sporty, cockpit-like feel. Ford’s new pre-collision teach with a head-updisplaydetectsaloomingcollisionand automatically applies brakes if the driver does not respond to warnings. It can also apply automatic braking to mitigate or avoid a collision with a vehicle ahead. Active city stop operates at up to 40km/h. Radar technology further enables the new Distance Indication feature and adaptive cruise control technology. Distance Indication tells the driver the time gap to the vehicle ahead. Adaptive cruise control maintains a driver-selected distance from the vehicle ahead. So, it seems the Fusion delivers quality and craftsmanship to the refined, elegant, sporty and highly expressive exterior, and an interior that has optimised ergonomics and comfort, with premium finishes and equipment. We’re trying to get somebody at Ford to give us the price list, although it seems it’s top secret (maybe they don’t want to scare anybody). - Wheels24.

OCAL Natal Carbineers female athlete Nonsikelelo Mbambo was a marvel to watch last Sunday during the 25km organised by the Pinetown and District Athletics Club. The race started from Waterfall Shopping Centre and finished off at Pinetown’s Lahee Park. Mbambo came third in the main ladies race in 1hr:44min:41secs. The first athlete home in the ladies main race was the experienced Suzette Botha (1:42:12) of Eskom AC. In second place was Danelle Adlam (1:42:16- Nedbank AC). Mbambo also took honours for ladies between the age of 35 and 39 years old. According to her, she performed well because she always takes advice from her husband, Mdumiseni Zondi, who is an experienced athlete and long serving member of Natal Carbs.

Mbambo works at Bargain Basket in Church Street and is a former Emzamweni and Mthiyane High School pupil. Before joining Natal Carbineers, Mbambo ran for Run Walk For Life based in Pietermaritzburg and only became a licensed runner in 2007. The men’s race was won by Sipho Mbanjuli in 1:20:54 of Phatane AC, the runner-up was Elmore Sibanda of Ubunye AC (1:21:10) and Babalo Mtsokoba of Stella AC took third position in 1:22:00. Meanwhile local runners and others from around KwaZulu-Natal are expected to take part in Sparkport Challenge 32km/16km at Sydenham Sports Club in Durban on Sunday, February 1. build for the future,” said Radebe. Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates star striker, Bennie McCarthy, said he was devastated to see SA going down again, and failing to get it right three times, but predicted a bright future for the country. “We are able to score first but always fail to stay focused or kill the game. It means there is a problem in our defence or concentration. “I don’t have a problem with Mashaba, and he will lead us to success in future,” said McCarthy. At the Afcon tournament, Bafana Bafana lost 3-1 during their first game after scoring first. They played to a 1-1 draw against Senegal in the second fixture. In their third game against Ghana, the SA side were first to find the nest but the bubble bust at the end and they went down 2-1, which means they were booted out of the competition. - Jerry Barnes

Another former SA captain, Lucas “Rhoo” Radebe, says that the country must be proud of the way players represented Mzansi, although it was a learning curve. “We were here to learn and they all playedwithpridebutfellshortbecause of experience. Bafana Bafana looking better

HE Bafana Bafana current team and especially the head, coach Ephrain “Shakes” Mashaba, must praised for changing the side around. According to a couple of former national team players, the South African senior outfit is now looking better in many ways and they predicted a bright future. Durban-born and former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey says the SA team under Mashaba was one of the good sides at the on-going 2015 African Cup of Nations at Equatorial Guinea, before it was bundled out on Tuesday night. Tovey feels Mashaba brought back the pride, passion and the meaning of playing for the country. He says the country must not blame or shoot down Mashaba and his players for failing to go far in the Afcon tournament. “We played very well. He took on a young team which was formed only a fewmonthsago.Iamgladthatwewere
