What you had to say about “Omalume”

Ncamisile Ngcamu: “I’m not against “Omalume” taking the children to school. They are helpful because not every parent can afford to take their children to school them selves. It is ideal for young children because some of the children are still too young to be travelling by taxi. What I don’t like is seeing young boys dropping out of school and becoming drivers of these cars.”

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE >>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za TRAGICbakkieaccidentthatkilledsevenpupilsfromFezokuhleprimaryschoolinImbaliUnit18lefttheresidents of the city in shock. Nompendulo Ngubane spoke to people to find out what they think of these modes of transport, which are referred to as “Omalume”.

A

Nathi Sibisi: “My concern is the overloading. I believe that the reason they overload is because they are transporting young children. They shouldn’t be banned but the government should lay rules that they will have to follow like in any other working office. The cars they use must be in good condition at all times.”

Zama Ngcobo: “Omalume” save time. A child wont be late, unlike if they use a taxi. With “Omalume” they are safe, they fetch them from home, leave them at school in one car. It is a relief for a parent because they know at what time they should be expect ing them from school.”

HE year 2015 has been adopted as year of community tourism by the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association (MPTA) recently. At a seminar themed: “Community Tourism as a tool for Local Economic Development and Transformation’ at the Old Prison last Thursday”, it was pointed out that community tourism is listed in the National Tourism Sector Strategy as one of the priority areas. “And MPTA as representative of communities and the private sector has a major role in driving this as spelt out in the KZN Community Tourism Strategy,” committed MPTA director Dumisani Mhlongo. “Local communities have a key role to play in tourism development, as they are the focal point where many of the key cultural, heritage sites, historical and adventure venues that are of significance to tourists are found within communities,” said Mhlongo. “Involvement of local communities can only help to enhance the local tourism product and grow domestic tourism,” he continued. Ethekwini Municipality’s Durban Tourism has achieved a lot regarding this. Speaking on behalf of Durban Tourism, Nelisa Mshengu, shared

She said that Durban acknowledges the importance of working with Community Tourism Organis ations (CTOs) to drive domestic tourism and therefore have a structured relationship through

which they support the CTOs. A variety of local key tourism products and attractions were listed. A stock of infrastructural needs was taken and the meeting decried the state of neglect of many local tourists’ attractions. The meeting resolved to advocate for improvement of this situation through the MPTA. - Supplied.

husband is not treating her right, and thehusbandwouldbeexpectedtopay for her children’s upkeep or education. In that way, no one would feel cheated out of their money. I am of the opinion that love is not about making money for me as a parent, but a conscious decision between two people that they would like to spend their lives together. Apparently, many guys would like to start families, but they have financial constraints. I find it unacceptable that some parents should stand in the way of a young couple who wishes to start a family just becausethepoorguyisnotfinancially strong to pay them for their daughter. But then a parent would argue and say how is a guy who cannot afford paying for lobolo planning to take care of his or her daughter? The Nguni people refer to lobolo as a relation-building gesture of goodwill, and they are proud of their daughters who bring money to them in this way. I must quickly state that I have nothing against anyone who accepts lobola fees or payment for their daughters. In fact, having been married for ten years to my late wife (God rest her soul), I realise that we maleshavenorighttocomplainabout paying lobola. Women (of course not all of them) generally give more in a relationship in terms of household duties. Besides bringing children to the world through a laborious process, what it takes to raise a child is painstaking and it is general knowledge that the woman folk often bear the brunt for

T is common for males to avoid paying lobola for women, and the advent of a lobola app, though meant to be for entertainment purposes, touches on very pertinent issues. Indeed, beauty or physical appearance, cooking, wealth or earning an income, are some of the things that most men take seriously nowadays. It is not surprising that some women should find the app offensive. For starters, no woman likes being evaluated or critiqued, especially if they are lacking in some of the matters raised in the app. Personally, I do not support the paying of lobola and if someone should wish to marry any of my daughters, they could have her withoutpayinganylobolofees.Andof course I would not expect my daughter to contribute even a single penny towards that wedding, if it is a white wedding. Yes, my daughters are not for sale. In other words, what I have done to support them i.e. paying for their education, health, food, transportation, shelter etc, cannot be measured in monetary terms. But of course there is a catch: she is welcome to come back home any time if the

it all. In fact I salute every mother married or not (including the many single parents out there) - for the hard work that constitutes being a mother, let alone single parenting. Women are the ones who have to see to it that children eat, if they have clothes to wear, their cleanliness, if they have a roof over their heads, the list is pretty long. Whatever is contained in the Children’s Act - a good mother is familiar with it more than the father is. However, the number of fathers who are referred to as the ‘new man’ is rising because of advocacy and awarenessworkthathasempowered many men about children’s rights, including the right to a shelter, security and the right to be free from emotional, mental, sexual and physical abuse. As a newly graduated single parent who has enjoyed the input of a useful partner for a decade, I am more appreciative of the value of a competent mother and wife. Hence I believe it is not necessarily wrong for those who like the idea of receiving money for their daughters in the form of lobolo to be critical of the new lobolo app, if it discriminates in accordance with the value (or lack thereof) that the makoti will bring or not bring to her new family. I really liked that witty lobolo app invention. It is entertaining. However, women can rest assured that in real life, some men do not get to know the true value or quality of their women before they marry them. * Simphiwe Mkhize writes in his personal capacity.

Andile Mkhize:

Has lobola lost its meaning?

"Nowadays, lobola is more about showing off how much you can afford rather than culture. Sending your child to school is like taking an investment policy as parents expect more when it comes to lobola negotiations. There is a lot of money that is wasted and you find that people are getting married for all the wrong reasons.”

W

ITH software developer Robert Matsaneng having developed a lobola calculator app to be installed on smartphones, NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to city residents to find out if lobola still serves its purpose or if it has become a money making scheme. Matsaneng said that the app is intended to be playful, as it gives an estimate of how much dowry one is worth. It considers age, height, weight, waist size, and how attractive a person is, qualifications, type of job, whether she has been married before and if she has children.

Nokwazi Lugayeni:

Nandi Gabisa: "Paying for school fees, clothing and transport is the responsibility of parents, however when it comes to lobola negotiations, they consider all those things. It's like they expect to be repaid for what was their responsibility from the beginning. After lobola negotiations, there is still a lot of exchanging of gifts. Some even ask for laptops as part of the negotiations. It's like parents are selling us."

PHOTOS: NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

"Although this application is meant to be playful, nowadays we have lost the meaning of what lobola is. There are deductions and additions as if we are items in a shop. It should go back to the way it was before, where the intention was to create relations between two families."

Minenhle Mabizela:

Sfiso Xavier:

"Some pay lobola and end up not getting married because of the expense. After negotiations, there are things such as umembeso and umabo which cost a lot. I think the way lobola has been made to be expensive is also contributing to the divorce rate, as you find young married couples divorcing because there are so overindebted."

"The main purpose was to establish relations between two families. Although there has always been an exchange of gifts in the process, they were not as expensive as they are now. People even ask for electric appliances nowadays which is not ok."

SCHOOL SCENE 18 ECHO Lovey Moodley leaves Have you got your passport? Heather with love maritzburg

N a solemn special assembly on Friday, renowned Heather Secondary School principalLoveyMoodleysaidhis final goodbyes to his pupils. After a 42-year career in education, 28 years at Heather, Moodley (64) announced his retirement to teary-eyed pupils and members of staff. Fellow principals from schools across Pietermaritzburg took time out of their busy schedules on Friday to personally express their well wishes, while Heather pupils randomly popped in to Moodley’s office between classes for a last hug or handshake. Moodley said he was sad to be leaving and he “can already feel the hollowness settling in”. “I was always the first one in and the last one to leave and when I think about Monday, I can’t comprehend what I’m going to do all day out of this routine,” Moodley said. “It will be difficult to make

that mental adjustment.” Throughout his term as principal since 2002, Moodley has been instrumental in maintaining a 95% pass rate at Heather Secondary. “I’ve tried my best to take my school to a certain level and I hope it can be taken to newer heights in the future. “The school is very close to my heart,” Moodley said. An avid sportsman, Moodley will be replacing his days in the classroom with time on the greens as he plans to take up golf in his spare time. He also hopes to do charity work for temples around PMB. Moodley specialised in Afrikaans and economics and has taught some of the country’s top pupils. “I’ve had a very close relationship with my students, but the rules still apply. My philosophy is that no teaching or learning takes place without discipline,” Moodley said. In his absence, the title of principal will be passed on to the current deputy, Daryll John.

The Island is now playing in PMB T

HE Hexagon Theatre will, from 17 to 21 February at 6pm, be showing The Island, a play starring Mpilo Nzimande and TQ Zondi and directed by Peter Mitchell. The play is written by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona. “But just remember this, brother, nobody laughs forever! There’ll come atimewhenthey’llstoplaughing, and that will be the time when our Antigone hits them with her words.” is one of the salient highlights of the Island. John and Winston are two prisoners on Robben Island, bound by ideology, proximity, shackles and a deep affection. As they rehearse for a performance of Sophocles’ Antigone at the prison concert, John learns that his release is imminent; Winston is a lifer. This classic South African play balances hope and despair as it identifies with Antigone’s struggle of right and wrong, the law of State versus the law of the heart. sanctions on South Africa - a move which helped topple apartheid. Tickets are R70 (R50 for students and seniors). Bookings at Computicket (school block bookings through the theatre). - Supplied.

ARITZBURG United chairman Farouk Kadodia is confident that he can secure the services of coach SteveKomphelabeyondtheendoftheseason. The former Free State Stars boss was linked with Orlando Pirates after the Soweto giants parted ways with Vladimir Vermezovic in December, but the Buccaneers seem likely to stay with caretaker coach Eric Tinkler until the end of the campaign. Komphela was also heavily linked with ChippaUnitedatthebeginningofthe2014/15 season, but Kadodia and Maritzburg fought hard then to keep their man. “We understand that Steve, like every coach, hasambitionstocoachatthetoplevel,” Kadodia tells KickOff.com. “But we have bent over backwards to

accommodate him in Maritzburg and we are confident we can keep him.” Kadodia also points out that Pirates could have approached Komphela after Vermezovic’s departure, and didn’t. But that doesn’t mean that Komphela, who has guided the Team of Choice to seventh in the log standings, won’t be a target of Bucs at the end of the season. “I can’t say what they will or won’t do,” Kadodia saysofPirates’ambitions.
