HE non-stop gushing of water from taps in Copesville’s Swapo A section continues to raise concerns from residents and road users in the area. According to some of the residents, more than four taps are leaking in one street and they say that this happens in most of the streets in the Swapo A area. When Echo visited the area where concerns have been raised, water was running from the taps onto the main road. One concerned citizen, Moosa Ismael, said that seeing the water being wasted prompted him to phone the municipality. He said that when he notified them of the situation, the municipality promised that the relevant people from the water department would come to fix the taps. “I have lost count of the phone calls that I have made to the municipality. The same thing was happening in December . The water pours from the main taps and it runs into the road. “This is a worrying matter since we are being warned that we have to save water. “The great concern is the manner in which the relevant people are handling this issue. We have water that runs non-stop and sometimes thishappensforamonth.Thetapsaredripping day and night and it has become normal,” said Moosa. Delisile Zuma who was at one of the leaking taps said that the breakage of the taps is caused by children. “We have uncomfortable, hot weather here

and the children cool themselves off by splashing themselves with tap water. That is how the taps gets broken. People from the municipality come and fix the taps but after three or four days, they start dripping again. “We are used to wet and slippery roads and it is clear to everyone that water is being wasted,” said Zuma. The municipality was contacted for a comment but had not responded before going to print.

Students cry over work piling up NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

W

ITH the University of KwaZulu-Natal having suspended lectures until 23 February following the strike action over a 12% fee increase, students, with academic work piling up, have pleaded with management to meet their demands. The peaceful protest turned violent late last week with a car belonging to Risk Management Services (RMS) being burnt to a crisp on Sunday night on the Pietermaritzburg campus. Students say that their main concern is the fee hike in both academic and residential registration, and as a result most of them have been financially excluded. Management sent a letter to students last week urging them to finalize their registration by 20 February. However students say it will not help them as when the institution reopens on 23 February, they will still be not registered as no decision on the increase has been taken. Kwazi Simelane, an internal relations students, said that her

registration has been delayed because of the strike. “I only attended one lecture and because they are now suspended, it is difficult to register for some modules as not all lecturers are available. “They must give students what they want because the more

support those who have been financially excluded. “It is unfair that out of eight billion applicants looking for financial aid, only four billion have been approved funding. There is nothing negative about thestrikeaslongitisforthegreater good.” Lungile Mthiyane, an agricultural science student said that her main concern is that others had already started with their lectures when she was still battling with her registration. “Hopefully before we reopen on the 23rd, a decision would have been made as those of us who have not registered are already behind. “By the time we register, we will have too much work to cover in a short space of time,” she said. In a statement issued by the director of corporate affairs, Lesiba Seshoka said that executive management will review the situation and advise accordingly. “The university is committed to putting in place plans to recover lost lecture time. We regret the inconvenience caused and apologise to students, parents and members of staff whose commitments have been interrupted by the unfortunate activities of a handful of disruptive elements.”

TAC out of funding crisis ECHO REPORTER THE uncertainty over the future of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) due to insufficient funding will be a thing of the past, with the organisation having managed to raise at least 60% of the estimated budget. An article was published in the Echo last year highlighting the organisation’s plight, as it needed millions to sustain its project. Provincial head for TAC in KwaZulu-Natal, Mzamowenkosi Zondi, said that with over 350 individual donations and contributions from Equal education, the Canon Collins Trust, Discovery and Remgro, R2 million has been raised. Zondi further said that TAC branches have raised over R100 000 in donations from within communities as well as from volunteers.

“Finally our resource mobilization team has continued its hard work and has been able to finalize a major new funding agreement for approximately R11 million in 2015. “The organisation has been abletoraiseapproximately60%of ourestimatedbudgetfor2015/16. “We are extremely happy to announce that TAC will not face either closure or a dramatic scaling back of our programmes.” Zondi further said that in a bid tocontinuewiththeirfund-raising initiatives, the organisation will partner with Johnny Clegg to create greater awareness and political commitment to stop TB and MDR- TB. Part of this campaign will involve a concert in Johannesburg in June and will be aimed at raising R1 million for the organisation’s campaigns to halt the TB epidemic.

Outrage over Sona drama

NOKULUNGA NGOBESE nokulungan@myecho.co.za

F

OR many, the 2015 State of the Nation address (Sona) will be remembered as a circus, with EFF members being forcibly removed and the DA walking out ahead of President Jacob Zuma’s speech. IFP leader Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi described the incident as “a disgrace to South African history.” NOKULUNGA NGOBESE took to the streets to find out what city residents had to say on the debacle.

Nkululeko Mnikathi: "It was wrong to disturb the president while presenting his speech. They should have waited for him to finish at least. The DA left on their own free will and no one should be blamed for that."

Sphamandla Memela: "It is a disgrace what we saw at Sona, it was too chaotic. It is a bad reflection about our country to other countries. It shows that we are not united."

Andile Mkhize: "Political parties should learn to listen to each other and to respect one another. What happened at Sona is a clear reflection of what is happening between them. Apart from the drama that was caused, I think the president did very well in addressing issues that are currently facing our country."

Mbali Zuma: "Opposition parties are no longer behaving like opposition parties, but instead base their judgements on personal vendettas. What happened at Sona was a personal attack rather than a focus on the speech itself. It was supposed to be a speech, and not a question and answer session.”

UMGENIWaterhasproposedabulkwaterbasictariff increase of 8.2% for the 2015/ 2016 financial year, which is slightly lower than that of the preceding financial year of 8.7%. The tariff has not yet been approved by the national minister of water affairs, said Msunduzi municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi at the Executive Committee (Exco) meeting. “The impact of the tariff increase is such that as the municipality, we have been previously buying 1000 litres at R5,070 per kiloletre (kl) and we will have to buy the same amount of water for R5,487 per kl,” said Nkosi. Umgeni will formally present the tariff to all its customers by the end of March. The actual analysis of the tariff increase over the past ten years shows that the highest increase was in 2014/2015 with an 8.7% increase, and the lowest was in 2006/2007 with a 3.4%. Msunduzi Municipality’s projected bulk purchase from Umgeni for the 2015/ 2016 financial year is R387 901 582 for 70694657 kl. How Umgeni’s tariff increase will affect the public at a local municipal level will soon receive attention with the help of the Msunduzi Municipali ty’s office of the CFO, which is chaired by Nelisiwe Ngcobo.

HE much-anticipated theatre oftheabsurdfinallyunfoldedin our national parliament in Cape Town, during the State of the Nation address which was delayed by an hour. This was due to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) demanding to know when our state president, Jacob Zuma, is going to pay part of the money for the upgrading of his private home in Nkandla, in line with public protector Thuli Madonsela’s recommendations. Obviously South African politics has always been exciting, and it does not look like it is going to stop keeping us on our toes for some time to come. Seeing parliamentarians trading blows with security personnel or the police at the parliamentary chambers could have been a typical humorous scene from a movie made by good old South African filmmaker, Leon Schuster.

My world YOU kill yourself because you are a trans gender individual Because the world refuses to accept who you are Because no one understands the way you look compared to the inner you Do you know how many people value your strength? Do you know how many people look up to your strength everyday? Do you know how many kids living dreamless, with no food on the table but still can’t commit suicide because hope still lives within their hearts? Do you know how many of our broth ers and sisters dream of going to school but are being rejected because their dreams aren’t good enough? How many of our parents hurt every day because they can’t provide for their homes ? Howmanyparentshurtbecausetheir childrenwon’tbeattendingthatgradua tion ceremony? Do you know how many preachers

SA political chaos typical of postcolonial African politics degeneration It was unpalatable to watch, especially when one remembers that the late honourable Nelson Mandela led us to that place with much reconciliatory dignity. Of course, it was not the first time a South African parliamentary chamber has observed a dramatic scene. I am sure Helen Suzman, the lateformerDAstalwartwhocutalone figure in a National Party dominated parliament as an MP, must have felt the same as former state presidents FW de Klerk, and Thabo Mbeki did recently, when the then apartheid architect, Hendriek Verwoed, was murdered in parliament. It is appalling to note that the reconciliatory tone that Mandela ushered into our country’s political environment is now drifting away very fast. For starters, how does EFF leader Julius Malema label our president as

the number one tsotsi when no court of law has proven him innocent of all the allegations with regards to the Limpopo provincial government transport department millions that he allegedly helped himself to through his company? But most importantly to me, why did we have to have Malema starting his political party? Oh, but we allowed good old Bantu Holomisa, the lonesome UDM leader, to start his own party too, didn’t we now? And of course, there was Terror Lekota’s party, Cope, after his fall from grace. I dare say it’s a black South African thing to fail to keep the peace amongst the brothers. Obviously, the defunct dream of formerSABCboss,ZwelakheSisuluof forming a black Boederbond would have needed black magic to keep black leaders together, sharing the

spoils of the new political dispensation like the Afrikaaners did. I am permanently in awe of former apartheid defence force minister Magnus Malan, who reportedly oversaw a huge budget which he shared with some 20 Afrikaaner families. That was true brotherhood by my evaluation. But no. Blacks must fight over who controls which province or country and what they have amassed for their own individual families. What a pity! It is embarrassing to hear stories of black service providers being fed up of the political elite and us civil servants because they are tired of sharing huge sums of money with sleeping business partners, and their employees end up going without pay as a result of the scramble for resources. I did not expect Malema and Zuma to end up in this way. I saw them as important leaders of a great movement in Africa that the ANC has always been. When I met Malema for the first time in his then Luthuli house ANC youthleagueoffice,Ireallythoughthe was Zuma’s big friend. There I was, having spent my personal

resources driving to Gauteng with an enthusiastic black budding filmmaker, who wanted us to compile a documentary on the humanitarian work of Zuma’s foundation. Of course, Malema received us well and promised to help us find resources to profile this initiative. Indeed, we never heard from him again, and before I knew it, Zuma was in power and Malema was making sweeping statements that they had never been friends. Obviously, the rest is history. I have been disappointed by several filmmaking initiatives, with budding black producers making me invest my time and resources in initiatives that never pay off or they fail to share the income when we pull off the project. But my disappointment with struggling black filmmakers’ greed in a white-dominated filmmaking worlddidnotmatchthewayIhavefelt about Malema and Zuma. I wonder how it felt to be de Klerk, sitting there, watching blacks exchanging blows in the same parliament where history made him hand over power to the dignified iconic former political prisoner Mandela. Are we embracing a future that is degenerating to another typical African state? Only time will tell.

HE days of searching for talent from outside of the city are over, said Pretty Olifant, the founder of Hot Toffee Communications who will be hosting the Kwasuka Sukela (Once upon a time) event in PMB. The slogan is “PMB Got Love”, which indicates that Pietermaritzburg has talent and that love marks the beginning of a positive change for our community, a change that begins with us, said Olifant. She said that the purpose of the event is growing and nurturing local talent. “The Kwasuka Sukela idea came about when my partners and I sat down and decided on a name that will be selfish enough for us just to focus on Pietermaritzburg,” she said. “The event will be hosted on 28 February at Alexandra Park. We want to be proud of in-house talent. Pietermaritzburg does have talentanditisuptoustoensurethatthishidden

talent is being exposed. “We will be joined by Themba Mkwena and Khethi Ntshangase who are both PMB artists who have made a name for themselves in the Gauteng province. “Local artists, DJ’s and poets will be sharing the stage and we are inviting others to come and be part of celebrating our own talent,” said Olifant. There will also be a photo exhibition courtesy of Anatoli Photography. “Artists will be allowed to sell their music and fashion designers will display and sell their garments. “We are appealing to people to attend and only bring a donation of toys. We are not choosy about the toys and books are also welcome. That donation will be given to charity,” said Olifant. The family fun day event runs from 10am to 5pm at Alexandra Park. For more information, people can phone Olifant at 072 379 6318. They can also visit the Facebook page: Hot toffee communications or email: hot_toffee@ymail.com. also to unearth talent amongst aspiring comedians and to mentor them when needed. I’m hoping that it will be an ongoing project and my long term goal is to start a talent search in comedy around the city,” he said. Comedians that are expected to share the stage include Kubheka, Mondli Mzizi, Swallows, Mshushisi Mlotshwa and Syanda “Gonzo” Maphumulo. The show starts at 7.30pm and entrance is free. Local film maker to screen film on gender based violence NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

SWEETWATERS’ film maker Wandile Nkala will this Saturday officially launch his film titled 7pm at the Bessie Head library. Nkala, who produced the film in 2013, said it took him seven days to complete it. “We are done with all the shooting and we have concluded that this is good craft that should be seen by people from the province.” The film is aimed at raising awareness around issues of gender based violence, women and child abuse. It talks about a young businessman who,

afterexperiencinginsolvency, bringsproblems to his home. He threatens to kill the mother of his disabled child, but unfortunately his son finds a gun lying around and shoots himself to death. “Gender based violence is very much a part of our lives. It is important to speak about it as in some communities, particularly in rural ones, people understand better if what is being spoken about is supported by visuals. I’m urging people to come out in their numbers to support local talent,” ended Nkala. The screening start at 4.30pm. Those wishing to attend may send an email to events@theseventhfilms.com.

SUCCESS STORY

My name is Priya (43 years), from Howick, Pietermaritzburg. From the bottom of my heart I thank Mr Baka for saving my marriage. My husband of 12 years had been taken away from me by another woman. After moving from one herbalist to another without any success, a colleague at work told me about Mr Baka. I went there and within three days my husband came back, using water and a mirror, Baka also showed me all my enemies. I have no other way to thank this man, only to tell the whole world about him. He can also boost business, chase bad spells and tokoloshe, unfinished jobs, quick sale of property, illness, lucky oil to win at the casino and many more. Find him in Pietermaritzburg Cell: 071 749 6906 Privacy guaranteed

“ HE MADE MY ENEMIES COME AND CONFESS WHAT THEY DONE TO ME” I first heard about Mr Shake on a community radio talk show. I took his number down and booked an appointment. He charged me to read my fortune. I was shocked when he told me my name, and my husband’s name. Mr Shake saw that my husband and I were fighting. He mentioned that my husband was involved with another woman which I couldn’t believe. He then showed me the other woman in a mirror and I was shocked!! I had lived for 10 years with unhappiness in my marriage until now. Mr Shake cast a spell and the other women separated with my husband and later both confessed to me. Today we live happy with respect and no fighting after Mr Shake binded him to me. I recommend him to others who are suffering and regard him as my guide. My husband has been to him and his business has improved. He also helps with other problems, love, luck, marriage, business, work, etc. If you would like to book Call 073 957 0953, private home.
