FTER years of living in shacks, residents from the Jika Joe informal settlement will finally have proper houses. The construction of temporary houses started last week. The new housing project, which is an initiative of the Msunduzi MunicipalityandtheDepartmentof Human Settlements, will see slums being eradicated. A total of 300 temporary houses will be built and dismantled after a certain time, to make way for proper houses. The municipality has identified four vacant pieces of land for the new housing project. Speaking at an Exco meeting, deputy manager for Corporate Services, Dr Ray Ngcobo, said that the slum eradication project is co-ordinated by the Department of Human Settlements, and as a municipality they are providing support by making the land available. “Each unit costs R47 000 and is aligned with the provincial government's policy on temporary structures, which includes water and sanitation. The new housing project will benefit all residents, not just fire victims.” Ngcobo further raised concerns about threats from residents to blockade the N3 as they are not happy with the temporary houses and want RDP houses instead. “Those who are not happy are those who have seen a business opportunity, and are renting out their shacks. Now that they will be demolished, they see a loss of income,” he said. DA’s Megan Chetty said that it is unreasonable for R20 million to be spent on temporary accommodation. Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said that the temporary structures will be dismantled and assembled for use, in case of emergencies, in other informal settlements.

Speaking at an Exco meeting, deputy manager of corporate services, Dr Ray Ngcobo, said that the municipality is looking at nullifying the current rental housing waiting list, and creating a new one. “We have +_ 300 flats which are not enough for everyone. We have established that there are people who are living in these flats, but do not qualify to be paying so little rent. We are looking at auditing the actual number of people who do not qualify to rent those houses. “This will be done through a comprehensive audit, and by conducting a new means test, as the economic situation might have changed. Everybody will be subjected to one, and we want to make sure that everyone who is on the list qualifies,” he said. Exco member Jabu Ngubo applauded the initiative, saying that there are deserving people who have been on the waiting list forever. “It does not mean that we will remove all those on the waiting list and start a new one. We will simply look at the waiting list and see if we can replace those who are already on the list with new ones. “This will be after a means test has been conducted on every applicant”, said Ngcobo. Advertisements informing potential tenants on the waiting list to report to the municipality for re-registering will be published in all local newspapers in due course.

IN just a month since schools have re-opened in the province, violence seems to be on the rife with separate stabbing incidents at Mehlokazulu and KwaMncane high schools recently. At Mehlokazulu, it is alleged that a group of pupils who had been involved in faction fighting in their areas took the fight school. SAPS spokesperson, Captain Thulani Zwane, said that a 19-year-old victim was stabbed on the school premises during lunch break. “Two suspects, Mthobisi Shezi (18) and Sbongiseni Shezi (23), appeared in the magistrate’s court last Monday . The situation is under police control at this stage,” he said. In a similar incident, a 24-year old man was stabbed in his back on Wednesday, following an argument between two pupils from KwaMncane High School. A pupil, who did not want to be identified, said the two pupils had been drinking, and started fighting. During school break, the one went out and came back with knives that had been hidden in the bushes. Several boys who were not students also showed up, and lured a group of pupils outside the school premises, where one of them was stabbed. Zwane said their detectives are investigating the incident. He said a case of assault had been opened and that a 24-year-old man was stabbed in his back by the suspect. “The incident took place outside the school premises and the victim is not a pupil. No arrests have been made,”he said. KwaZuluNatalDepartmentofEducationspokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said “This is a societal problem which extends to our schools. We ask societies to ensure that our communities are safe and free from violence. If we can tackle this issue at a societal level, we will not find this problem at our schools. We urge all stakeholders including parents, to work with the department in curbing these incidents.”

SIMPHIWE MKHIZE

I

CANNOT say I enjoyed my childhood very much, and understandably so. It was not nice to attend a normal school where there were no disabled children. But my mother treated me as a normal person, even if she was very sensitive to my special needs. Yet the reality of my disability did not go away. When other children ran to and fro, chasing the soccer ball, or playing hide and seek, I was not a part of that. My special shoes did not allow me to be free to do so. At least when I was at home, I could play soccer, swim in the river, play toys and ride bicycles with other children because I did not have to wear those heavy shoes that supported me to walk, without tiring and falling down at short notice. But even with community soccer teams, I had to be a goal keeper. That is, if we were having friendly matches. I would often be thrown out of the game if there was a money bat involved. Our opponents knew that my left leg was weak, so they would score on the left. Hence, I spent a great deal of time as a spectator of many a community soccer match rather than being a participant. It was often alienating and lonely. But my friends liked me because I was enthusiastic company, and I did not feel like I was not a part

of them. The problem was at school. I did not feel that it was nice for my friends to be around me when I was at school because I could not play at all. And it was compulsory that I wore those shoes. I actually had a nursing matron patrolling me at home to check if I had the shoes on at all times. She felt like a representative from Correctional Services checking on a prisoner who is still serving time at home. I was her polio prisoner. I would often spot her as she entered the gate into our yard and I would disappear as quickly as I could because I never wore my surgical

shoes at home. Sometimes she would seemerunningawayinordertoavoid her, but sometimes she did not. And at other times I would be lucky that she did not find me at home when she came to supervise me. If she found me, I would feel like she had come to take me to Edendale Hospital, to spend more years under guard. She did not forget to remind me that I would be kept in hospital permanently if I did not wear my caliper and surgical boots. The possibility of spending more years than the one-and-half-year period I had to endure in hospital was not welcome news. It was a nightmare having her in

my life. She came once in a while, but you never knew when she would come to check on me at home. I can’t even remember her name. But she was a mature, beautiful black woman who always wore her black wig that made her look like an Indian lady. She could have been in her early 30s - the age of my father’s younger sisters at the time. As I said, I could not play nicely with my friends when I had my surgical shoes and the steel caliper on. It was only in later years at Amakholwa High that I was able to play something at school – my very favourite sporting activity, table-tennis, which my older brothers also liked playing at the

Edendale YMCA community center and at school. I was definitely different to other children but my mother insisted that I attend a normal school and not a special school for people like me. Besides, there are a few special schools for disabled people because we are a minority in society. My mother also felt that attending a normal school would make me adapt easily to mainstream society. Shewantedmetofeelthesameasothers. She encouraged me to see myself as no different to others. But sometimes it felt like she was patronising me – just making me feel good about myself because I was her child. I am not always sure if it is healthy to take a disabled child to a normal school. But thanks to my mother’s support, I have been a team leader of many so-called normal people since my teenage years, when she forced me to head a musical group from her small storeroom. I was to later find myself teaming up with friends to head a community drama group. I have since had privileges of supervising so-called normal people in various professional environments with much ease. Hence, I hug my mother with a tearful heart as I write these words. I hope every parent who has a disable,d or so-called “abnormal”, child willtakecounsel.Itmaynothavebeen easy. Like I said, when I was in lower grades there was no playing during school breaks for me, and I had to watch other children racing around like flies in a room full of slaughtered animal carcasses. getting opportunities to develop their football talent. The reality is that many of our parents are not willing to take this responsibility. The majority of us expect clubs, federations or the government to do everything. We are not willing to be accountable for anything. We feel com fortable being in a position to criticize instead of providing solutions. Life has provided all of us with wealth, time, talent and love. It is a pity that some of us are unwilling to give any of the above even to our own children. It is important that selflessness begins at home. There should be no child lacking in basic football equipment while taverns and “shisa nya mas” are making fortunes from parents. We have responsibilities to nurture the talents of our children.

Samba boys to dance on SA turf

I

RRESPECTIVE of what happened during the recent African Nations Championships (Chan), the SA senior men’s side will get a chance to dance the popular Samba against five-time World Cup champions Brazil. The international friendly, dubbed “It’s Samba Time”, is scheduled for March 5 (Wednesday) at the FNB Stadium at 7pm. Tickets for the muchanticipated clash are already on sale at R50, R100 and R200. They can be purchased at Computicket outlets and at Shoprite, Checkers and Shoprite-Checkers stores around the country. The Samba Boys are the2013FifaConfederations Cup champions, after walloping Spain 3-0 in the final. Brazil is also one of the favourites to win the World Cup 2014onhomesoil,andis currently by far the strongest national team in the world. They have some of the best technical staff in the universe in Carlos Alberto Parreira and coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, both former World Cup winners. Last week, Scolari named his squad to face SA. He has brought in two new faces and dropped AC Milan veteran Kaka. Scolari also pointed out that he will call up three more homebased players later

before coming to Mzansi. The new faces are Bayern Munich defender Rafinha and Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho but the team will be without Fluminense striker Fred, who scored five times in the Confederations Cup, as the 30year-old aggravated a serious thigh injury recently. Aside from Fred, the World Cup hosts are short of forwards and last year saw Atletico Madrid’s in-form Brazilborn forward Diego Costa elect to play for his adopted country, Spain. Meanwhile Bafana Bafana head coach Gordon Igesund last Friday named what he described as his “strongest squad bar none.” The former Manning Rangers, Orlando Pirates, Sundowns and well-travelled Igesund said he was excited to be freely able to name his squad without any worries. “Fortunately, there were no injuries or other impediments to limit my selection on this very important and exciting occasion,” said Igesund. “I have chosen what is largely the same group of players who shocked world champions Spain with a merited 1-0 victory at the same venue in November last year.” –Jerry Barnes
