T

HE family of an 11-year-old girl from Vulindlela in the Etsheni area had no doubt she was going to be a good teacher. However, thiswasnottobebecauseyoungAnele Mkhize died in a vehicle accident last Friday morning along Edendale Road near Henley Dam. The accident occurred when an Opel Corsa bakkie, taking children to their various schools in the Northdale area, overturned. Anele, a grade 5 TPA Primary School pupil, and six fellow pupils were rushed to hospital after the accident. Unfortunately, Anele didn’t survive. Her mother Nomalungelo Dlamini described her daughter as a person who loved church and other children. She showed all the signs of being a wonderful teacher as one could tell from her behaviour, said Dlamini. Anele’s aunt, Thuli Hlengwa who lives in The Grange said her niece was a bubbly and caring child. She was the type of child you could ask to do something and she would do it with a smile, she said. Anele, she said, also loved writing and teaching other children. “She used to gather children and teach them using her school books. That was when we picked up that she was a good teacher in the making. We have lostanangel, somebodywhocaredandhadrespect for her elders. “She loved attending church every Saturday and she knew how to pray,” said Hlengwa. When Echo visited the Dlamini family at home, neighbours were already flocking to console the family and to listen to how the accident happened. Colonel Jay Naicker said a case of culpable homicide has been opened for investigation by Plessislaer SAPS. “It is alleged that an Opel Corsa bakkie carrying seven children overturned on Edendale Road. “An 11-year-old girl died at the scene and six childrenwerecriticallyinjured. They, includingthe driver, weretakentohospitalformedicalattention. “Circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” said Naicker. However, some of the people at the scene say the bakkie was carrying 14 children at the time of the accident. The owner of the car Jabu Mdunge said she doesn’t know what went wrong or caused the accident. “I don’t know what might have caused the accident. I went to the scene and when I got there everything was still in place on the car. The tyres were still there and nothing had come out from the car”.

“Even though Regulation 18 (c) oftheactwasspecificallydesigned to assess the suitability of candidates in positions where it matters most, we still find that people who apply for almost any position are subjected to credit bureau checks as part of their security clearance. “Another common practice is that consumers are pressured by potential employers, through recruitment agents, to sign consent foraccessingoftheircreditbureau information as part of the recruitment process even though the position is not in finance. “This practice has seen many qualifying candidates miss out on opportunities of employment. We therefore need a continuous dialogue, engagement and means of social accord in order to find one another. “People need to be heard, need to cry and breath and find the inner peace. >> Ridiculing Zuma is the same as ridiculing Mandela, Mbeki, Luthuli, Dube and other ANC leaders, past and present A FEW days ago the ANC in KZN had a march in eThekwini where it protested against the booing of its leader, President Jacob Zuma. Zuma was booed first during the com memoration of the late Nelson Mandela andagainattherecentBafanaBafanaand Brazil soccer game in Soweto. Thebooingofaheadofstate, forwhat ever reason, is something that, even if one finds distasteful, can do very little about as it is difficult to argue with the masses. This is because even when the masses are wrong in their understanding of an issue, theyarerightastheyaretheoneswhovote politicians in and out of power. One of the most confusing things that has happened within the ANC has been its

on in this country, it is simply a mystery, how the members and supporters of the ANC have allowed every Tom, Dick or Harry to hurl abuse at Zuma, willynilly, without mounting some kind of defence. It is almost as if they told them selves that for as long as it is not their names in the mud, it was of no consequence. todefendwhatissaidabouttheANCpresi dent in the media. I remember a few people pleaded with cartoonist Zapiro to desist from continuing to draw Zuma’s head with a shower on top, as this was no longer relevant since the courts had found him not guilty. In fact it was childish to continue to caricature Zu ma in that way. I have yet to see a “right to reply” in any newspaper, responding to an article whose only aim was to embar rass him. While the reaction and attempt at protecting Zuma during that furore on the drawing of his exposed manhood was better than nothing, it did not go far enough. He did not come out of smelling of roses. It would seem that the problems with the ANC president seems to come more from internal rather than external sources, as various factions, internally, appeared to want to upstage one another. This is most unfortunate for the party itself as well as for most of us black people. Without undermining the roles that the two other liberation movements, the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) andPanAfricanistsCongress(PAC)ofAza nia, have played in the liberation of this country, it is the ANC which eventually forced the then illegitimate white minority regimetonegotiateitspoweraway, sothat today, we have a constitutional

democracy. If those negotiations had not taken place, it is almost certain that many of us blacks would still be treated as unwanted stepchildren in a country which is our natu ral backyard. Without being lyrical about the ANC, it is most probably fair to say it is one single entity that we blacks, (unless you include the minibus taxi industry), can claim to own. Now I have no idea whether when the KZN ANC marched in Durban they had that in mind, but freedomloving South African would do well to take note of it. The attack on Zuma as party president cannot be divorced from the attack on the ANC and those of its members and sup porterswhostandonthesidelinewhilethe name of their leader is being dragged through the mud and the movement is be ing destroyed, are making a grave mistake. Looked at it historically, it is in the inter est of mainly the black majority, that if the daycomeswhentheANCisdestroyed, that day be prolonged for as long as humanly possible. ANC members and supporters should be awake to the fact that those who ridi cule Zuma, as ANC president are, at once and the same time, ridiculing Mandela, Mbeki, Luthuli, Dube as well as every single other ANC leader, past and present, de spite their claims that they worship Madiba and respect Mbeki. To say this is not the same as saying that the ANC and its leadership should not be criticised. It’s just that there clearly is something seriously wrong in a setup where, just 20 years into democracy, peo ple seem to reserve the most vile and de structive criticism for a movement (and its leaders) which sacrificed much to see that they today live as a free people. That’s all I am saying.

Football is about players IThashelpedUEFAagreatdealthattheirpresident is a former top footballer, club coach and national team coach. This has a huge impact in terms of understanding the needs of the game. South Africans need to realise that a game of football is about players. Currently, one gets the feeling that administrators, coaches and referees are serving themselves instead of football and the players. Players are the most important component of the game. The majority of us fail to understand that without players there are no jobs. Fans and sponsors, in other words the funders of football, pay their money because of players. So it is important that we look after the players. The majority of us will go hungry if footballers were to “down tools”. A fixture list is one of the most important documents in football. It gives direction to the game and allows people to plan their lives accordingly. If football in 2014 cannot deal with basic things such as fixtures, then Safa’s Vision 22 will not be realised. People who work in lower levelsofSouthAfricanfootballarevolunteering theirserviceseventhoughtheyhaveotherjobs, families and friends. It is important that football treat them with respect. Provision of good service is not a favour, it is the responsibility of football’s employees. Everything in the game revolves around 90 minutes of a match. I firmly believe that many of our brothers and sisters need a crash course on player development in order to start appreciating their roles more. The ball will be expected to be in the net several times during the Nashua Maritzburg United School Soccer Challenge starting on Monday. CARTER and Intsika high schools, followed by Edendale Technical High and St. Nicholas will lock horns today in the Nashua Maritzburg United School Soccer Challenge. The challenge officially kicked off at the Maritzburg UnitedSportsClubonMonday when youngsters from 16 schools in the Umgungugundlovu region took to the field. These aspiring soccer players will showcase their skills and this tournament is the opportunity for rural and former model C school pupils to play against one another in a proper format. The winners will take home trophies and medals and have their kit sponsored by Nashua. More importantly, the games are all closely watched by talent scouts from Maritzburg United on the lookout for players to sign up for Maritzburg United Colts, the development team for Maritzburg United. “Soccer development in South Africa is critical to not only the future of the sport, but also to the betterment of the lives of the children in impoverished areas for whom soccer provides a positive platform from which to grow and

excel,” said JP du Toit, general salesmanageratNashuaMaritzburg. In a recent statement to the press, South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan acknowledged that the development structures in South Africa need urgent attention if South Africa wants to produce players “capable of beating the best in the world”. Du Toit views the Nashua Maritzburg United FC School Soccer Challenge as a big step in the right direction in this regard. “The truth of the matter is that some of these schools that take part in this tournament don’t even have proper kits. They’ve never played on even pitches with proper goalposts and a linesman in an actual tournament format, so it’s a huge deal for these kids. “The winners from last year’s tournament, Mehlokazulu Secondary, were so honoured that their boys won the tournament they erected a big marquee at the school and held a prize-giving ceremony in which the players were treated like heroes, which was amazing to see,” said Du Toit. Last year’s tournament resulted in Ryan Moon and Ay-

ren Bond from Maritzburg College both being awarded with professional contracts with Maritzburg United after being scouted by Maritzburg United’s management team during the tournament. “Our goal with this tournament is simple – we want to keep kids off the street and provide a platform for them to make their dreams of one day playing professional soccer a reality. “This is the second year that Nashua is sponsoring this event, but we have big plans to grow this tournament going forward,” said Du Toit. *Nashua Maritzburg United High Schools Soccer Challenge round of 16 fixtures March 17: Sukuma Comprehen sive v Eastwood Secondary Kharina Secondary v Sobantu Secondary March 18: Northbury Park v Linpark High Maritzburg Christian School v Alex High March 19: Smero Secondary v Haythorne Secondary Mehlokazulu v Maritzburg Col lege March 20: Carter High v Intsika Edendale Tech v St Nicholas.

A DEBUT recital CD by Zimiphi Biyela, known as ‘Zimdollar’, the gifted new comer to the South African recording music scene, means great news for Afro pop enthusiasts on the hunt for fresh listening material. Released last Thursday, the CD titledKwazeKwamnandi,isZimdollar’s new 12track recording boasting an ex citing mix of styles, including tradition al music, a dance track and gospel mu sic. It also has a wedding song in which Zimdollar is joined by Sibongiseni Sha balala, a member of the Durbanbased Shabalala Rhythm group, Sibongiseni Shabalala. “I aim to take listeners on an emo tional journey with me as they experi ence my new CD,” says Zimdollar, known to thousands of Ukhozi FM lis teners as the presenter of the early Sat urday morning show, iKhethelo lo Khozi. Born and raised near Melmoth in Zululand, Zimdollar, then only known

asZimiphiBiyela, showedearlypromise as a stage performer at Sitheku High. She participated in the school choir, performing in the school’s drama and musical productions. The young artist then auditioned fortheroleofMagasela, theprophetess who forecast the birth of King Zwelithi ni, in Mbongeni Ngema’s musical pro duction House of Shaka, which toured South Africa in 2004. This afforded her the opportunity to hone her technique as a stage performer. Then as a member of Ngema’s Committed Artists Company, she fur thered her stage experience by appear ing in Ngema’s production of 1906 Bhambada, The Freedom Fighter. After attaining her Bachelor’s de gree in Education through Unisa, she taught Zulu, arts and culture and social sciences at Ohlelo Combined School in Nkandla between 2009 and 2011, be fore joining the SABC as a presenter. Since hosting the entertainment

and variety programme, she was pro moted to host Ukhozi FM’s Sigiya Ngengoma Show, broadcast on Saturdays between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm. Tracks featured on the CD in clude Ithemba Lami, Amasoka, Ithonga, Usizi’, ‘ndlala, Amath anga Amancane, Kwaze Kwam nandi, Vuka Sizwe, ‘Umona, Emnqam ulezweni, Amathanga Amancane’ (club mix), among others. Carly tells Nathan that Melanie doesn’t want to see him. Will and Gabi visit the pawn shop and demand to see the surveillance footage. Brady appears and the man is brought into the police station. The man clearly knows Rafe but impostor Rafe doesn’t know who he is until Gabi arrives and calls him Dario. Lexie is surprised when Nicole tells her Tay lor moved into the mansion. Impostor Rafe nearly blows his cover when he doesn’t recognise Rafe’s brother, Dario. Daniel informs Chloe that she will be receiving divorce papers. Stefano orders that the safe house key be taken away from Rafe. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Steffy calls Liam out on whether or not he is having second thoughts about his de cision. Thomas suspects that feelings are brewingbetweenhismotherandEricwhen she receives a dinner date invitation. Feel ing that they definitely have Stephanie’s approval, Eric and Taylor agree to move on with their lives together. Brooke decides to take Bill’s advice and seeks out Eric to talk about her future with Forrester Creations. Thomas welcomes Li am to the family after learning about Stef fy’s pregnancy. Liam assures Thomas that he is completely committed to Steffy and that Hope will ultimately be fine. Impressed with Carters ideas for For rester Creations, Rick offers him an oppor tunity to do some work for the company. Rick is distracted with thoughts of the young woman that he met the day before. Bill is frustrated that Katie is too preoccu pied with Will to spend a romantic time to gether. Brooke accuses Taylor of using Eric to try to ice the Logan family out of Forrester Creations.

Hope for Banyana to advance under new coach THE newly appointed Banyana Banyana head coach and Netherlands born, Vera Pauw, is the best thing that has happened to South African women’s soccer. This is according to Safa’s technical director and former senior women’s team manager Fran HiltonSmith. Smith says Pauw’s contribution and presence in the country will take SA women’s soccer to dizzy heights. She says besides Pauw’s “colourful”and “heavy” CV, her international work experience in women’s soccer is good news and a plus for the country. “Pauw is not only good news to our women’s soccer but she’s the best in this position. “Besides her qualifications in coaching, she’sgoteverythingthatwe needed for the women’s head coach.

“Our women’s soccer team battled for a very long time to get a person like this and we are all excited to have her. She’s a hard worker and she believes in team work and she successfully worked in a couple of countries. “We wanted to bring in someone with an international experience at thehighestlevelwhocanhelptakethe team one step further and qualify for the World Cup,” said Hilton-Smith. Pauw will be tasked with building a formidable team ahead of the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada. Hilton-Smith confirmed that the former head coach, Joseph Mkhonza willnowworkfortheteamasnational selector for all women’s teams. Pauw has worked as technical director of the Russian Football Union and was the country’s interim coach in 2011. ShewasNetherlands’technicaldirectorandthewomen’snationalteam coach from 2004 to 2010, leading the countrytothebronzemedalintheEuropean Championships in Finland in 2009. “Vera comes with vast experience andwillassistinelevatingourlocalfemale coaches. She will also conduct workshops with our female coaches who have recently completed their CAF B licence. “Former Banyana captain Simphiwe Dludlu completed her UEFA B licence in Holland and she’s one of the

women who will be earmarked to go further in the coaching structures.” In order to qualify for the World Cup, Banyana would have to finish in the top three at the CAF African Women Championships (AWC) scheduled for October in Namibia. However, Banyana still need to qualify for the AWC by winning its home and away ties against Comoros Islands. “We have a camp on 19 March where 40 national team candidates will arrive, including the previous Banyana team. “Vera will have to whittle them down to prepare for a friendly against Nambia, whoarethehostsoftheAWC and to prepare for our qualifiers against Comoros in May,” continued Hilton-Smith. Despite the new technical changes, Hilton-Smith insisted Banyana would keep its flair on the field of play. “Banyana’sstylewon’tchange. It’s their style that has got them to where they are. “They qualified for the Olympics and the African Women Championships 2012, where they made it through to the final, and there is no possibility of changing their style. “All we want to do is work on their tactical acumen and their physical ability,” said Hilton-Smith. — Jerry Barnes.

HREEKwaZuluNatalgiantsMaritzburg United,AmaZuluandLamontvilleGolden Arrows will have to be strong against their opponent in order to go through the Nedbank Cup last 16. The Team of Choice will travel to the North West, Moruleng Stadium to honour their last 16 fixture of this jinxed competition against dangerous Platinum Stars. About seven months ago Dikwena worked their way up and forced the country’s soccer pundits to label them the new cup specialists. The Royal Bafokeng-owned outfit won both the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout, and playing them at their base and in the North West’s heat can be a mission just on its own for Maritzburg United. The Melmoth-born and Dikwena striker Siphelele Mthembu this week said their visitors will be “properly welcomed in the North West and must expect a good run for their money”. Mthembu also feels the clash is likely to be a tough and interesing one. “MarizburgUnitedisnowundertheknowledgeable Steve Khompela and we expect them to be tricky or puzzle us as bit. It’s a good thing that we are facing them at home. In front of our fans we are difficult customers,”said Mthembu. United’s newly appointed marketing and communications manager Brian Zuma said cup games are always unpredictable but his side will give it the best shot. “Although our priority is to earn points in our league games but travelling to North West willbetaxingafterplayingBloemfonteinCeltic on Wednesday[yesterday]. “Cup clashes are unpredictable and lottery-like, but we are a professional team and will give it a good go, who knows, we might come back with something,” said Zuma. Hopefully, the KZN giants will be able to overcome their opponents and really need our good luck.
