Your say on COSAS call

Siphesihle Majola

T

HE Congress of South African Students (COSAS) is continuing with it’s call to the department of education to stop publishing matric re sults in newspapers, as they believe that it violates the rights of pupils. Nompendulo Ngubane spoke to pupils at Edendale Technical school about the issue.

Sthandiwe Goge

“I don’t agree with what COSAS is asking for. I believe that publishing the results is a form of motivation. It motivates us to perform at our utmost best and for us to achieve great results. It motivates the pupil to work harder to get good admission results for university.”

Ayanda Dlamini

“I agree with COSAS. The publication of results in the newspaper adds unneces sary pressure to pupils. Stopping the results from being published will also minimize the high rate of suicide cases by matric pupils who have failed.”

Nosipho Zondi “They shouldn’t be published. They should rather just be the schools pass rate so that people can rate the school, not an individual.”

To comment on this topic follow us at @echokzn

“They shouldn’t publish the results in the newspa per. It’s true that there are pu pils who excel and they de serve to be recognised. But at the same time, we cannot overlook the minority, pupils who did not do well. As much as it could be victo ry to some, to others it could be the end of the world.”

A MAN stood perilously on top of the New England Road bridge on Tuesday afternoon and threatened to jump. The man, who allegedly had a fight with his girlfriend leading up to the suicide bid, was spotted by Carol Cowley, the wife of police officer Ian Cowley, a member of the search and rescue unit. Carol was on her way to collect her children from school at around 2pm when she saw the man. “I was just driving past and I saw him there, his feet dangling near the sign board … I knew it was notaverysafeplacetobesoIcalledmyhusbandwho is a police officer,” she said. A source at the scene said: “The police tried to talk him off the edge, but he was not interested; he said

his life was over and everyone was fighting with him.” The source added that the police pulled him off the bridge as soon as they got a chance to grab him. RTI spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the N3 southbound lane was temporarily closed. “There were concerns that if he jumps, he might injure innocent people … the police and negotiators were called and they managed to talk him down.” PolicespokespersonThulaniZwanesaidtheman was taken to Northdale Hospital for attention.

HE man alleged to have killed his fiancée at Liberty Mall before attempting suicide in July, plans to plead not guilty to the murder. Nkululeko Ngubane (30) is charged with stabbing his fiancée Sinoliswe Mshengu to death at Gate 2 at the mall where she worked manning a boom gate. Afterwards, he allegedly jumped off the nearby bridge onto the N3 and sustained multiple fractures. WarrantOfficerMiltonHadebethisweek opposed his release on bail on grounds he would interfere with witnesses. He told magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawonde that a woman who witnessed the stabbing is still severely traumatised. Another person, from whom Ngubane allegedly bought a knife inside the mall shortly before the stabbing, is still too afraid to make a statement, he said. Hadebesaidhealsofearsthatifreleased, Ngubanecouldagainattemptsuicideorthat his own life might be in danger from the enraged community where Mshengu lived at Willowfountain. He said Ngubane and Mshengu were involved in a love relationship and he was told that Ngubane had been paying lobola for her. CCTV footage showed him driving into the mall that morning in his white Jetta. He did not, however, go to his place of work at a men’s clothing store. At 9.08 am he is seen “walking around” the mall before going into a shop and buying a knife for R100. Hegotintohiscarandtriedtodriveaway, but seemed to have trouble starting the car. A man helped him push-start it. He then drove to Gate 2 where Mshengu was, and they spoke. “At 9.49am he started stabbing her,” said Hadebe.“Beingleft-handed,hestabbedher once on the right side of her neck. She fell down. After she fell he stabbed her four moretimes…shedidnotgetupandshedied on the scene.” Hadebe said Mshengu’s female colleague had tried to “push” Ngubane away from Mshengu. Afterwards, Ngubane got into his car and drove away. He reversed backoncetoinserthiscardintoaslottoopen the boom gate and then left. He was later found lying on the N3 after he jumped off the bridge near the mall. Hadebe said police recovered the murder weapon, covered in blood, from inside Ngubane’s car. Ngubane’s lawyer, Simphiwe Ngwenya,

suggested to Hadebe that bail conditions “especially in view of his [physical] condition” would ensure that Ngubane does not go near Willowfountain, the mall or interfere with witnesses. He also told him that Ngubane intends pleading not guilty to the murder charge. Ngubane was carried in and out of the accused’s dock at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court by court orderlies as he was unable to walk. In spite of his two sets of crutches, he struggled to get in and out of court. When he returned after the lunch adjournment, orderlies had obtained a wheelchair for him and wheeled him into the courtroom. While he listened to the evidence of Hadebe, tears rolled down his cheeks at times. The case was adjourned until August 26.

YOUTH for Christ has been named the lead organization during the city-wide meeting held to address the issues of children living on the street and subsequent criminal activities. YFC have been working with children on the streets for years now, and have established both a girls and boys shelter in the city. They will take charge in helping the children off the streets and reuniting them with their families or finding them alternate places of safety. Representatives from religious organizations, law enforcement officers, the Msunduzi Municipality and general members of the public were present at the meeting held at the City Hall recently. Member of the Msunduzi Municipality Executive Committee, Jabu Ngobu, said

that together with the help of all parties concerned, a solution can be brought forward to help address the issues at hand. Koos Voster, chairman of Businesses Fighting Crime, said that the city, together, needs to think seriously about solutions to keep children off the streets. “We need businesses to supportthisinitiativeandhelp us to help them address the situation.” Regional Director of YFC, Sally Mann, said that the organization has had a great success rate in reforming children and taking them off the street. “It is not about giving thousands of rands towards an organization. It’s about showing support to the children.” Although there was a strong message to keep in mind that the children living on the streets should be treated with dignity, the reality is

that they are often under the influence of drugs and there have been numerous reports of them terrorising motorists and the public at large. The solution to curbing this would be not to phone the police but rather an organization that can get them off the street. The public was also once again encouraged not to hand out money as this promotes drug addiction. “They are not the scum of society, they are children. They have not chosen the streets. They have no other choice,” said Tom Hewitt, founder of Umthombo Street Children’s Project in Durban. Hewitt said that there needs to be a strong strategy put in place with vested interested from as many people as possible. “There is no quick fix to this problem. You need to offer them an alternate lifestyle. Getting them off the streets is only the beginning,” said Hewitt.

HE MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, said that there is still room for improvement on the UMgungundlovu district pilot sites that were appointed to head the National Health Insurance (NHI), a health insurance programme introduced by government. Dhlomo had embarked on an NHI road show, where he made visits to some of the district pilot sites to check if standards are being met. The visits made by the MEC included Richmond clinic, Grange clinic, Edendale and Grey’s hospital. Hesaidthattheaimofhisvisitwasalsotocompile a list of challenges that the clinics were facing “I will say that I’m not happy because none of themareat100%atthemoment.TheRichmondclin ic managed a 60% for the first time. The second time they earned themselves a 62% followed by a 71% rating. I’m not only there to check and judge, but I’m also availing myself to help where I see there are still challenges. “I have told them that they must inform me if they

encounter challenges along the way. “Icanproudlysaythatasthedepartment, wehave made some progress with these clinics. We have clinics that now own generators and have their own doctors. “Checking means also looking at minor things. I’m talking about ensuring that there is toilet paper, brooms, signage and more inside the premises for the patients,” said the MEC. Dhlomo was overwhelmed with the Whizzkids Academy at Edendale hospital, which he referred to it as one of the biggest war rooms. “I will give back to this hospital by coming back and spending some time with the youngsters who are part of the academy,” he said. When asked who would make sure that the NHI pilot sites are up to standard, he said there is national team tasked with that role. “They are the ones to monitor, check and report. The NHI programme is already on and we are positive that all will work accordingly,” he said. The uMgungundlovu district pilot sites are Impendle, Richmond, UMshwathi, UMkhambathini, UMngeni, Mpofana and Msunduzi.

that in the uMgungundlovu District, there is a committee which was formed to prepare for patients who have a Lethal Communicable Disease (LCD). The list of LCDs include Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars), bird flu, Marburg Fever, Ebola fever and the Lassa and Rift Valley fever. The report states that this committee is based at Greys Hospital. On Monday it was reported that a 37-year-old man suspected of having Ebola tested negative for the disease. It has been reported that the man, who has not been identified, worked as a health and safetyofficerinamineinLiberia. The countries hit by Ebola include Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria. How is Ebola transmitted? Ebola is introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals. In Africa, infection has been documented through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines found ill or dead in the rainforest. Ebola then spreads in the community through human-tohuman transmission, with infection resulting from direct contact (through broken skin or

mucous membranes) with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, andindirectcontactwith environments contaminated with such fluids. Burial ceremonies in which mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased person can also play a role in the transmission of Ebola. (Source: WHO) Signs and symptoms Symptoms include the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding. People are infectious as long as their blood and secretions contain the virus. “It is also important to note that, after contracting Ebola, it can take up to 21 days to show symptoms of the disease, although eight to 10 days is more common. Until a person exhibits symptoms, they are not contagious, so you don’t need to be concerned about getting the virus from apparently healthy individuals. N an effort to reduce the child mortality rate, the provincial Department of Health has launched the KwaZulu-Natal Initiative for Breastfeeding Support (KIBS), together with the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Elma Foundation. Launched during international Breastfeeding Awareness Week, KIBS aims to improve exclusive breastfeeding rates in the province by not only teaching women about its importance, but also encouraging them to donate their breast milk to be used to help other children. According to Victoria Mubaiwa, the department’s manager for maternal care and women, as many as 500 babies will be saved annually if mothers across the province respond to the call to breastfeed their babies for as long as possible. KIBS will increase access to human milk for sick and small neonates in KZN by 2017. The project also seeks to change the mindset of breastfeeding, increase its social acceptability and create awareness about human milk banking within KZN communities. Milk banks will be opened across the province in various hospitals. There are currently five banks already opened. Speaking at the recent launch was Anna Coutsoudis from the department of paediatrics at

Breast milk is the best milk PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Breast milk contains antibodies that help protect against dangerous illnesses. UKZN, who said that the more mothers that take to breastfeeding, the more donors there will be. “Most people have never heard of donating breast milk, creating awareness is the only way we will change minds and lead people away from baby formula,” she said. Sister Shanila Moodley, manager of the maternity unit at Netcare St Anne’s hospital said that the benefits of breastfeeding shouldalwaysbeexplainedandthe practice encouraged for mothers. “Unlike milk formula, breast milk contains nutrients and vitamins that are important for the healthy mental and physical development of your baby,” said Moodley.

Breast milk also contains antibodiesthathelpprotectagainst dangerous illnesses, including the two most common causes of infant mortality worldwide - diarrhoea and pneumonia. Moodley added that breast milk is far superior to milk formula, no matter how natural or high quality the formula may be. Breastfeeding also has longterm health benefits for the baby. Infants who are breastfed often have lower blood pressure and cholesterol and reduced rates of obesity and type two diabetes. In addition, breastfeeding may help reduce the risk of the mother developing breast and ovarian cancer in later life.

“We encourage mothers to breastfeed exclusively for six months following the birth of their baby before introducing other sources of nutrition. It is important to begin within the first hour of birth if possible, because this is when the mother’s body produces colostrum, a thick creamy liquid thatishighinnutrientsandiseasily digestible for babies. Colostrum encourages the cleansing of the baby’s intestines, which helps prevent jaundice,” she said. Moodley emphasized that HIVpositive mothers who are breastfeeding do not give their children any other liquids or foods, as exclusivebreastfeedingforuptosix months can lead to a significantly reduced risk of mother-to-child transmission of the virus. She added that the Netcare Foundation has supported the South African Breast milk Reserve (SABR) by collecting breast milk from donor mothers for distribution to infants of mothers who are unable to breastfeed. “Breast milk banks are beneficial as not all mothers are able to produce their own breast milk. The more banks we have, the better, as breastfeeding can reduce the morbidity and mortality of newborns,” said Moodley.

>>news@myecho.co.za MSUNDUZI municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi was recently elected president of the Institute of Local Government Management (ILGM) of South Africa at a national conference held recently. The institute was established 17 years ago and its predecessor was the Institute of Town Clerks. Its mission is to promote excellence in lo cal government management. “We have just had a national conference where all provincial chapters were represented. The ILGM elects the national working commit tee, which is the president, deputy president, the treasurer, the secretary and the deputy secretary. Then you have the national executive committee which comprises of those five people plustworepresentativeswhicharetheprovincial secretary and the provincial chairperson,” explained Nkosi. Nkosi said that he had been ILGM’s deputy president for just over a year. “In terms of the constitution, I will be the ILGMpresidentfortwoyears.Thepositioncarries with it a lot of responsibilities and we have already been mandated to tackle serious techni cal issues within the sphere. We have to harness and formalise the relationship between ourselves, South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and Cooperative Govern ance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) nationally and provincially,” said Nkosi. He said that ILGM is a professional body recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Nkosi said that at the conference, it was agreed that the national ethics committee be established. “This will deal with those who act in an unethical manner within the profession. Once the national ethics committee has been established, it will be cascaded down to all provinces to tackle unethical issues at a provincial level,” said Nkosi.

‘IDOLS’: local singer’s performance captivates SA Vincent Bones stole the show on Idols this past weekend. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

AMIL UMRAW LOCAL superstar Vincent Bones has captivated the country with his astounding performances on South African Idols this year. Bones (29) captured the imaginations of his ever-growing fan base with his heart-rending rendition of Miguel’s Adorn this past weekend on SA Idols. Originally from Eldorado Park, Bones took the train from Johannesburg to Pretoria at the age of 12, after his mother and uncle died. There, he roamed the streets of Sunnyside where he lived for quite some time, eating leftovers from rubbish bins. Luckily, he was taken to Boys Town where his life made an incredible U-turn. He is now a worship leader at the Eagle Christian Centre in PMB, where he lives with his wife and two-month-old baby boy. Apart from his fans raving over his performance on social media, the judges had encouraging words for him. Randall Abrahams, who got him to sing another chorus to the wild applause of the audience, said that he did really well at an important phase in the competition. Gareth Cliff expressed his excitement for Bones’s future performances. “Very excited to hear what else you’re going to do. That was very, very good. You’re a great singer,” said Cliff. Facebook and Twitter have been buzzing with messages of support for the local performer. On Twitter, Novashni Chetty wrote: “I love your spirit, your story, and your hunger to succeed.” Vincent’s Facebook fan page “Team Vincent Idolssa 2014” has accumulated over 540 fans within the past few weeks.

Celebrating National Marriage Week with a local seminar NOKULUNGA NGOBESE >>nokulungan@.co.za

GEARING up for National Marriage Week which runs from 1 to 7 September, the South African Marriage and Life Academy will next week host a three day marriage seminar at Ilawu conference centre. The South African Marriage and Life Academy was founded by Pietermaritzburg’s own Bongi Mhlongo last year, in a bid to provide marital literacy classes for unmarried people and a marriage course for those who are married. She has previously written books on the foundations of marriage and parenting. “With the country celebrating national marriage week in the first week of September, we want to kick-start the week by having a couples seminar. The seminar will

run from 6pm to 11pm from 29 to 31 August at the Ilawu conference centre in Commercial road. We want people to celebrate their marriages. “Septemberisspringandallthe flowers are blooming and we also want marriages to spring into greatness. We want to encourage couples to work on their marriages, so they can leave a legacy for f uture generations to come.” Mhlongo said that the country has a high divorce rate and more people are choosing to cohabitate rather than risk being in unhappy marriages because they have lost the basic foundations of love. The seminar is R700 per couple and people may make bookings by emailing her at marriageandlifeacademy@gmail.com or by phoning 082 498 3930 or reach her on her facebook page “Umshado wami, umshado wakho”.

PMB man named 2014 Weigh-Less man of the year NQOBILE MTOLO

>>news@myecho.co.za

P

IETERMARITZBURG resident Mthoko Ndlovu has been named Weigh-Less man of the year for the KZN regional competition after losing a whopping 40 kilograms in eight months. “I joined Weigh-Less by default. Last year September my wife suggested that we join a weight loss programme and so we joined Weigh-Less. We started jogging and resorted to healthier eating habits,” said Ndlovu. He said that in the first month, he did not see any results, but as time went by, people close to him started complementing his leaner frame. “I wanted to lose weight through a natural process and not through surgery. Our diet changed drastically. “We had to buy brown rice which is something we had never eaten before. Instead of buying full cream milk and sweetened yoghurt, we opted for skim milk and fat free yoghurt. “When I started the programme, I weighed 124.6kg. It is always better to plan your meals in advance because when you

He said that his form of exercise is running and as his body gets leaner and stronger, he increases his running distance. However, his wife who started the journey with him had to stop running due to a knee injury. “I knew that I could make it.

Once you start to lose weight you become motivated. I drink a lot of water and stick to a healthy diet. There is no magic trick. “Right now I run about 12km a day. I have even started my own vegetable garden at home. I reachedmygoalweightinMayand sincethenIhavebeenmaintaining my weight,” said Ndlovu. Before his weight loss, Ndlovu

would fit into a 3XL t-shirt but now wears a medium to large size. “Every time I look at my photos before the weight loss, I realize that I have come a long way. If I can do it, anyone can. I am happy that I love myself enough to take care of my body. “I have more energy than before and I am glad I made this decision,” said Ndlovu.

Interns (from left) Nontokozo Sokhela, Sikhumbuzo Ntombela, Sthembile Zondi, Nomonde Mlotshwa, Nontobeko Mkhize and Thandeka Mdletshe, have been given an opportunity by CHC Catering. CHC Catering has taken a proactive stance on the further education and training of their employees, thereby advancing its business culture. In collaboration with the UMgun gundlovu FET College, CHC Catering has offered its premises and expertise to College graduates of Hospitality and Tourism, so that in accordance with the latest occupational skills prerequisites, these unemployed graduates are given experience in their fields. Last year, six African female graduates were mentored by CHC employ ees in July for a week. This year, 10 interns will benefit from six months of working as part of the CHC team. As an intern, they will benefit from real world experience, exploring the catering profession and gain ing the relevant knowledge and skills required to enter this career. The primary focus is on getting some on the job training and taking what’s learned in the classroom and applying it to the real world. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

RIDGING the digital divide, 26-year-old IT technician from Imbali Unit 1, Nhlakanipho Sibisi, is on a mission to help township schools keep abreast of technological innovations. Having previously worked for various companies, Sibisi started the IT Cuban technology Café project last year, in a bid to teach computer skills to previously disadvantaged schools. His current pilot school is Zamazulu Secondary in Imbali where he is teaching teachers and pupils basic computer literacy classes, and using a wireless connection. “I saw that many matric pupils from township schools have problems adapting to tertiary institutions during their first years of study, as they are not exposed enough to technological innovations. You find that there are brilliantstudentswholoselifetime opportunities, only because they are not comfortable with using computers. “At these institutions, most of the work is posted online, and if youdonotknowthebasicsofusing a computer, it becomes a problem. I started the project to bridge that gap.” Sibisi said that pupils with computers at home around the vicinity of the school even use the wirelessconnectiontodoresearch

School principal Bongani Ngcobo said “Since the project started, the lives of our pupils and teachers have become much easier. We are now able to communicate with the department of education immediately. We no longer have to drive to town to fetch correspondence from the offices. “Since we have our own website, potential pupils can apply

online and we are even able to help our matric pupils with their Central Applications Office (CAO) applications and keep track as to what stage they are at.” Science teacher Sbusiso Mkhize said that all of these classestakeplaceattheschool’slibrary, as they do not have a proper computer laboratory yet. “In the past, a teacher had to do most of the readings for the pupils, but now roles will change as they

will get more time to research what the teacher has been unable to. We have past examination papers online, and clever children will make use of the opportunity in enhancing their knowledge.” Mkhize said that now that the project has started a school, they are appealing for donations for a proper computer lab. Sibisi hopes to expand the project to other schools in the Greater Edendale area.

MAMA Ntombi Community Projects (MNCP) has adopted Umsilinga Primary School as one of its projects in order to help pupils understand the basics of speaking and writing English from a foundation age. From Grade one to three, the medium of instruction and teaching is in Isizulu, but from Grade four pupils are introduced to English as a second language. “We are delighted to help with educational support at Umsilinga Primary as we believe that education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty in these children’s lives. They come from a severely disadvantaged background,” said Sandra Pillay, fundraiser for MNCP. “Not only are many of the children orphaned and living with aged grandmothers, many of whom are not literate, buttheareatheyliveinlacksthebasicinfrastruc ture of decent homes, water supply, electricity or proper roads. These children, in our estimation, are the poorest of the poor.” She added that they are grateful to Robyn Groenink who has volunteered her services to coordinate this educational support programme and to Katherine Jackson who is a high school teacher who has also volunteered her services to teach English. Solomon Qadi, MNCP’s Field Worker, assists with Zulu translation and helps the pupils to understand concepts and words. “We are delighted that our first lesson went so well and are looking forward to going back to school,” said Pillay. MNCP is looking for donations to continue their project, be it paper, financial support or petrol for the volunteers. For more information about the project, contact Sandra Pillay at 033 342 6525 or email mncp@telkomsa.net.

Calyn Reddy, a Grade 11 pupil from Carter High School, left for America recently for ten months. Reddy is one of 30 pupils taking part in the AFS Exchange Student Programme. She will be living in Iowa with another AFS student from the Ukraine. Reddy said that she was inspired to take part in the programme by other Carter pupils. PMB club sport needs a look at itself JONATHAN COOK ONE of the capital’s top sides, UKZN Impi, finishing a very disappointing seventh in the eightteam KZN Premier Division’s club rugby competition indicates to an extent the state of club sport in this beautiful part of the world. Maritzburg Collegians, under new chairman and St Charles Old Boy Didier Claite, are definitely on the rise with coach Carel Nel at the helm of an excit ing group of willing young players, including former Springbok Sevens representative Howard Noble who the club chair played an integral role in luring to PMB. The immediately likeable Claite has more plans in the pipeline, including a hugely promising junior setup insti gatedbytheequallyhardworkingSean Jones, another rugby man through and through. But for Varsity rugby the omens are bad. After an outstanding Varsity Shield campaign, where runnersup was the reward, the Impi have lost regularly in the premier division season and the hi erarchy need to take a long, hard look at where the club is going. There is so much incredible talent in PMB. Lwazi Ngcungama, the loose

forward who comes from an unherald ed rugby background and grew enor mously as a player at Varsity to be named 2013 UKZN Player of the Year, just one of them. Inland club and provincial hockey is also not in a healthy state in a number of respects and needs a makeover. An Indaba is needed, crucially chaired by a capable independent me diatorwhocankeeptheinterestedpar tiesonthetopicofrebirthwithoutget ting stuck in the mire of the sideshows. Inland club cricket always needs a long, hard, honest look at itself and while there are positives, the potential for improvement is undoubtedly there, but will require a collective will to make the changes happen. Scope for the independent media tor here as well, so stakeholders don’t get jammed up in the sideshow issues that wreck every meeting. Not being too clued up on canoeing, road running and more, it’s impossible to offer advice on the state of those worthy sports’ club health, but it’s great to see how two lower profile sports are getting their act together. Chris van Vuuren and company at thevibrantMaritzburgBowlingClub,as well as the likes of PMB East and Lynwood, are flying, while snooker is making a massive comeback under the helm of Richard Archibald and friends. It’s all about enthusiasm and teamwork for the greater good of the game, not personal ego.

Rough, tough Ranger unveiled

T

O coincide with the 2014 Ranger Odyssey off-road Challenge, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) unveiled a new limited edition version of the locally built Ranger. This edition will be available until the end of September. The inaugural Ranger Odyssey challenge in 2013 saw 10 finalists setting up camp and driving in some of Africa’s most gruelling environments. Contestants embarked on an action-packed cross-continent adventure, with only the toughest progressing to the final rounds. “We set out to find the hardiest contestants to take on Africa’s most demanding conditions,” says Gavin Golightly, marketing manager at FMCSA. “We wanted a personality that was as tough as the Ranger itself.” In September, this year’s Ranger Odyssey competitors will experience the most testing terrain that Namibia has to offer over 12 days, 13 stages, and 2 500 kilometres. Take care of the roots

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA IS it a correct assessment that a number of South African football coaches are world class? The top football clubs in the European leagues are presently busy trading players. These clubs are paying R700 million and more for players. What is preventing our professionalclubsandfootballersfrombenefiting from this pot of gold? Are they not also in business as it is always claimedinthemedia?Thetopfootball nations have players featuring in the European Champions League. It is said that if you take care of the roots, the plant will take care of the rest. There is a fundamental aspect which is required to improve young players’ development, coaching or teaching and education. The recent eThekwini under-19 tournament has shown that we have serious developmental issues. Our players are distinctly lacking in skills, intelligence, physicalandpsychological attributes required to become a professional footballer. These failings take place between eight to 16 years of age and prevent our boys and girls from reaching world class levels. We need to accept that there is a mountain that has to be climbed by South African football. The situation is far more complex than many of us realise. It will take lots of effort from everyone involved. Presently, politics is also not helping the situation. We need to learn that one is too small a number to achieve anything of significance. We need to accept that not everyone will be your friend. However, it is important to work with everyone since talent sometimes resides in those who are not your comrades. It will also help some of our young playerstoimmigrateto othercountries for their football education. This paid huge dividends in the academic sphere to those who went abroad during the apartheid era. It is a reality that countries like Belgium, Switzerland, Argentina, and Ghana, to mention a few, are doing well in youth development. The problem is that Black South Africans in particular prefer familiar environment. There is no doubt that children in the Southern hemisphere have more football potential than the rest. It is going to take us many more years to catch up with European nations. There are things that do not need money to be done properly. We are greatly lacking in soft skills like commitment, dedication, focus etc. Things will remain the same as long as the culture of entitlement remains. Lastly, it is interesting that the PSL is starting an under-19 programme. What happens when a club gets relegated to lower divisions? It would be nice if this were to be extended to First Division clubs? It is also unfortunate that we always start things at the top. It is like starting a high school in a village where there are no pre-schools and primary schools. The development of South African kids in sports lack a clear direction. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Eastwood secondary pupils headed for Colombia TWO Eastwood Secondary School pupils may see themselves playing professional football in South America in the future. Ward 34 junior players Lindokuhle Mohlakoane (17), Grade 10, and Andile Nxumalo (18), Grade nine, found themselves faced with the opportunity during the June school holidays. It was then that they attended trials in Johannesburg conducted by the Mzansi Mayfair Soccer Academy. According to the pupils, their local coach S’celo Vilakazi, of Tawana FC, heard about the academy and took them to Johannesburg. The head coach of the Johannesburg based academy, Edson Betancourt, was so impressed with Mohlakoane and Nxumalo that he immediately got hold of his contacts at the first division team Sabana Norte Futbol Club in Chia, Colombia. According to Betancourt, the two players have to raise at least R15 000 in order for their dream to become a reality. The money required is for their flight, accommodation, medical insurance, meals and transport to and from games. When asked why the academy could not pay for the two players,

Betancourt said that his institute was not funded and they were only trying to introduce their talent to the South American outfit. “Our academy accommodates about50SouthAfricanchildrenand we provide them accommodation, private school and food. We wish we could pay their expenses but we are not in a financial position to do so right now. The club in Colombia hasn’t seen them playing, so what they can offer is the opportunity to prepare them free of charge, and give them exposure to professional clubs in South America,” said Betancourt. Ward 34 ANC chairperson Ivy Terry-Adams praised the talent and potential displayed by the two boys and pleaded with local business people, and residents, to open their hearts and come forward to help. “This is something positive coming from Ward 34 and Eastwood secondary school. If we are all united and prepared to see our children going places, let’s support them and provide financial aid,” she said. Mzansi likely to witness a dream final WHILEsomemightsayitislikecounting chickens before they are hatched, others think it is wise for Mzansi soccer followers to start budgeting for their dream final. If the form displayed by the two Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, during their last week weekend’s MTN8 first leg semi finals, is anything to go by, then the country might as well get ready for a super dream final. Last Saturday, Chiefs travelled to NorthWest’sRoyalBafokengstadium to honour their first leg MTN 8 fixture against Platinum Stars, and won 2-0. Technically, Amakhosi made it difficultfortheirNorthWestbasedopponents by scoring two away goals. Chiefs goals were both scored by George Maluleke. On Sunday at FNB stadium, Stars will be visiting Amakhosi for the Wafa Wafa second leg. It is clear from all angles that the visiting Dikwena will find it difficult to deal with the home side, and the first leg score margin will have a bad effect mentally. If Chiefs can afford to only score
