An area of robberies and muggings NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

AYLIGHT pickpocketing happeningintheJwayelanibutchery pavement in the upper Church Street has not only frightened people but it has affected business as well. OneaffectedbusinessisJwayelani butchery which has lost customers due to the pickpocketing and mugging, said Jwayelani butchery managerDonovanGabriel.Hesaidthathe has witnessed some of the incidents where a group of people attack individuals and rob them off their cellphones and bags. from Jwayelani. “Theyareabletosee them through the glass door of the shop. They follow a person who is busy on a cellphone. One of them will block the victim from the front and one will block from the back. After that the phone or bag is gone and they just disappear. This is not only affecting the people who end up being victims but it’s affecting the business. “I had customers who would come for groceries but that is history now. People only come in for small items such as cold drinks. I have lost customers as people are scared to come to this part of town. “No one wants to come to a place that is dangerous. Their targets are pupils, old women and men and especially those on their cellphones,” he said. Gabriel said that there is one Safe City camera which is not helping as the street vendors have blocked it. “One thing that might help is the visibilityofthepolice.Policearenever

A streetvendorwhoaskednottonamed said incidents of pickpocketing and mugging happen in front of them. “We see everything and we no longer shout if we see them doing it. They have threatened to stab us and wehavenochoicebuttoignoreeverything. It’s scary and it’s happening everyday,” she said. Captain Thulani Zwane said that the theft of handbags and the snatching of cell phones in that area do occur fromtimetotime. Hesaidregularfoot and vehicle patrols are done in the area. “This includes the area around Jwayelani Butchery. We are not aware that businesses lost customers as the same area has the highest pedestrian traffic in the cit,” he said He said the camera issue will be reported to Safe City and the Msunduzi municipal manager.

City to get state of the art bus shelters NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

N line with the city’s urban renewal project which has been ongoing for a while, Pietermaritzburg may be the first city in the country to benefit from a beautification project aimed at providing state of the art bus shelters, and unique outdoor advertising. Speaking at an exco meeting last week, Bongani Dlamini of JC Decaux said that they have partnered with a company called Tutucoms and have put aside R20 million to upgrade the city’s bus shelters and to provide

unique billboard advertising. “It will be one of the first towns in the country that we are partenering with. With the modernised bus shelters we want to enhance public transport. “We want to modernise the city and we want these new bus shelters to even have maps on where one is and when is the next bus coming. “We want to provide quality billboards made of quality non-rustic aluminium which will also have a map of the city. We want to have as much minimal advertising as possible, at the same time be able to restore the city’s

each

heritage”, he said. The project which will happen over a period of five years, will see 20 new state of the art bus shelters being installed. Acting municipal manager Dr Ray Ngcobo said that currently there are no existing bus shelters within the city centre and that there is an urgent need to showcase a major urban renewal in the city. “We want to showcase the city as a tourist destination, have designated bus stops, bring the capital city to life and also create job opportunities,” he said.

Muggings in Church street hurt business SHOPPERS in Church street need to be vigilant when walking past the new Selgro Spar. Pickpockets are rife and they work in groups of two to three adult males, sometimes accompanied by a female. Their modus operandi is simple: find the unsuspecting individual who’s busy on their cellphone, follow them and bump into them. Next thing you know, your phone, bag or wallet is gone. This is also not good for the businesses in upper Church Street

as many shoppers don’t want to venture anywhere close. They easi lytargetwomen, oldmenorwomen and those who look vulnerable in public.TheSafeCitycamerasaren’t agreatdealofhelpaswell, asmany of the hawkers have blocked the cameras views of what happens on the pavement. Visible policing is a total zero so this makes it easier for these thugs to operate. This is ‘heaven’ for them as they go about their business with

no cares in the world. What can be done to eradicate or lessen the threat of getting mugged, robbed or swindled in this area? I would like the following to be done to educate the public: 1. The media should run a story on this, with eyewitness accounts, 2. More visible policing in this area, 3. Educate the public to be on the lookout for these thugs, 4. Run a survey and calculate the amount of money lost in this ‘busi ness’ daily.

Matrics: keep focusing till the end DR FELICITY COUGHLAN

I

N a world of instant gratification, the month to six weeks set aside for the Matric exams requires a tenacity from school leaving young adults for which the rest of their education had not necessarily prepared them. The relative freedom of this period can be counter-productive, as students give up the security created by a routine that others managed. Particularly as they pass the halfway mark in terms of papers written, the allure of the impending break and the celebrations can easily distract young people. In addition, anxiety or despair about papers that did not go well can undermine the determination to stay focused. Asmanyschoolsnowalsoallow Grade 10 and 11 students to study

at home, the students and their families have good first-hand knowledge based on previous years of how well the student is able to sustain (or not) the self-discipline needed. That knowledge should result in strategies to keep the focus for thenextthreeweeks.Thesestrategies include the obvious, such as a study timetable, but also scheduled reviews of progress and productive opportunities to engage with peers on progress. Young adultsneedtheirpeers, andacomplete ban on this interaction will lead to many wasted hours using social media and other communication tools to stay in touch. “As the list of subjects you still need to write becomes shorter and shorter, don’t be tempted into relaxing too soon,” says Dr Felicity

Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education. “Stop stressing about the subjectsyou’vealreadywritten. There is nothing more you can do about those results. But retain your focus right to the end, especially for the so-called ‘easier’ subjects which are often scheduled towards the end of the exam timetable,” she says. “Every paper counts and you have to give your best right up to the end.” Coughlan reminds students that selecting one or two subjects which may come easier to them was a deliberate part of their strategy four years ago - at that time they included these subjects to get access to some relatively easy “points” to up their scores and improve their chances of access to courses. That strategy should not be abandoned now. “Don’t drop the ball on that strategy now. Don’t stumble over the last hurdle and forfeit those points. The end of November will arrive, and with it the end of your school career, but right now remember that the only thing that should matter is that you earn the verybestmarksyoucanrightuntil you put down your pen after writing your last paper. “There is nothing left for you

to do about the way you started. Now it is all about the way you will finish,” she says. Coughlan says that in the next three weeks, matrics can keep their focus by: >> Not looking back – what is done cannot be changed and each paper should be treated as a stand alone opportunity to do your best. >>Ensuring that they stick to a schedule of eating healthy, and getting enough sleep and exercise. >> Sticking to their study schedule and even upping the ante a little, by putting in an hour or two extra to complete another mock paper, for example. “A few extra marks may well mean the difference between your application for a position and that of your competitors in the job market. It may also mean the difference between being accepted into your course of choice or having to look at alternatives. In a few days’ time, there will be nothing more you can do about the matric marks that will accompany you throughout the rest of your life. “Put in the time now and stick it out right until the end, and you’ll find your focus and additional effort will be the gift that keeps on giving throughout the rest of your life.”

T IS fascinating to observe the latest trend in South Africa. The era of consultants seems to be coming toanendandweareembracingsocial agencies e.g. NGOs, NPOs, foundations co-operatives, etc. Saying consultants are no longer there would not be a true reflection of reality. They are still with us, and rightfully so. Like many people out there, I remember registering a communications consultation company not too long ago and gave it a nice name.Butdiditeverdoanything?No. Of course I am not the only one – it is quite common not to be able to get business. At least I am not complaining because I have had a government job. But for those who did not have a job, I do not even wish to imagine how it is like to have a registered business operation and you do not get even a single contract, not even a once-off thing. Then in came the era of social agencies. They have always been there. But I just think that they are becoming an in thing nowadays. We have always had NGOs, NPOs and Foundations in our midst, but these days the buzz word is register a nonprofit making entity and raise funds. Perhaps the reason the majority of the people of this country did not register non-profit making entities was

SIMPHIWE MKHIZE because they did not have the capacity to raise money from overseas donors. Indeed it has been a South African culture to have such organizations run by mainly white folks because they had what it takes to secure the money – proposal writing skill, connections and contacts all over the world. It is nice to see the emergence of the black-run NPO, despite the challenges associated with managerial capacity, appropriate competencies like accountability, transparency, openness, team-work, all of which amounts to credible and effective service delivery. The rise of the social agency in South Africa is long overdue. Now that government is partnering with such structures in its ongoing search for solutions to unlocking factors that stifle service delivery unnecessarily,

From the era of consultants to social agencies there is a reason to be optimistic despite inherent weaknesses i.e. corruption or self-interest. The rise of the social agent in the United States is associated with improved service delivery because such people-driven structures have the necessary flexibility to reach the people on the ground. There is ample evidence to prove that these formations blend with communities and impact on the lives of the people at grassroots level more potently than the state-run programs that are coordinated by impersonal and inefficient government officials who may have ulterior motives e.g. bribery, nepotism and favoritism. This arms-length approach in government policy, especially when it comes to organisations that deal with social ills, is to be welcomed and in fact applauded.

kwimithombo yezindaba kuba sengathi kukhuluma amaqembu epolitiki amabili angakaze asebenzisane. Futhi kungenze ka ukuthi iNumsa ayisayikhokhi imali yob ulunga beCosatu njengoba kubonakala ukuthi ngeke isaba yingxenye yeCosatu uma kuwukuthi iCosatu ayizokwenza iz intando zayo, okukhona kuzo ukusula esik hundleni kukamongameli wayo uSdumo

Dlamini. Kungenzeka ukuthi iCosatu ibo na ukuxosha iNumsa kungaba ukuzigwaza ngowayo njengoba kubhekwe okhethweni luka2014 nje kanti iANC izowadinga namavoti amalungu eNumsa. Kanti neNumsa ayizoluyeke lolu daba ngoba sengathi ifuna ukuxoshwa ngaphambi kokhetho ukuze ihambe namavoti ayo.

It is true that there may not be adequate resources to allocate, but as much as possible competent people, including retired professionals, would do society a great service by starting or joining such operations in the interest of effective service delivery. Like in the United States, the churches must continually be seen to be driving such social agencies becausetheyareexpectedtoserveGod’s people in a manner that the original founder of the Christian church, the LordJesusChristhimself, wouldhave done. It is great to see churches serving the poor, feeding the hungry, the sick, the lame, including helpless old people, as well as transforming prostitutes, finding shelter for the homeless and engaging in job-creation endeavors that will benefit the members of the church and the broader commu-

nities they work in. Iknowthatitisdifficulttodealwith greed, opportunism and corruption, but it is possible to do good work despite the limitations of the human condition. Leaders must not be embarrassed when they are asked to be answerable and account for their actions, decisions and the manner in which they manage resources. It is part of running a good business operation, and it often results to growth and success. Itisbettertotryandfailthantofold your hands and do nothing. I have great respect for many organic intellectuals I know of people out there who may have understandable human flaws and managerial discrepancies, but they have what it takes to stand up and make a contribution to the development of society. IT IS NICE TO SEE THE EMERGENCE OF THE BLACKRUN NPO, DESPITE THE CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH MANAGERIAL CAPACITY, AP PROPRIATE COMPETENCIES LIKE ACCOUNTABIL ITY, TRANSPARENCY, OPENNESS, TEAMWORK, ALL OF WHICH AMOUNTS TO CREDIBLE AND EFFECTIVE SERVICE DELIVERY.

“This is a great achievement for me as I started singing at only eight years old. “I would stand outside shops and sing to make a living as my parents were unemployed. This award is a door opener for me and it is also a message to my fans that I am back. “I decided to put my studies on hold for this year to focus on the album and here I am. I am grateful to everyone who supported me”. Nzimande says he wrote the song after losing his producer Big Boy Mlangeni. “I was so hurt and worried but a vision came that God is with me at all times, in the morning, evening and night. “The song is about restoring hope among those who have lost it. If you pray with faith and believe that God will help you, it will happen,” he said. He plans to go back to school next year.

Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs Captain Itumeleng Khune was on Sunday named the 2013 SA Sport Star of the Year at glitzy ceremony at the Sun City. He was voted by the public ahead of swimming sensation, Chad Le Clos, cricketer Hashim Amla, wheelchair tennis player Lucas Sithole and athletic runner Mapaseka Makhanya. He has walked away with a brand new BMW 1 series and R1 million, half of which will be shared equally with the charity organi sation of his choice. The annual event is organised for Sport Minister Fikile to honour the sporting heroes who excelled in the last 12 months.

>> There will also be PSL fixtures for most of the clubs

United won’t be a stroll in the park but what is likely to be a motivator is that his players see themselves qualifying for another final. “Our visit to SupeSport United won’t be easy at their homeground. They got a new coach Cavin Johnson and his players seem to be understanding him very well. “We need to be careful, but I just hope our recent form in the Caf Champions League will be transferred to TKO. My players are mentally fit and wise. I also believe and hope that the fact that we are again left with one game to qualify for another final will come in handy,” said De Sa. De Sa also hopes the big number of players in his team will be handy. “Our team is lucky that it is made by a big squad and quality.” The second semi final between Amakhosi and Stars is also expected to be a humdinger. — Jerry Barnes from Johannesburg.
