Ashdown young man death a mystery >> His body was found days later >>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

MYSTERY surrounds the death of an Ashdown young man after he was recently found burnt beyond recognition and decomposed following his disappearance last month. Sandile Bambiso (27), who was an electrical engineering lecturer at FET College in Appelsbosch, had been missing since 27 July, and only to be found near Nagle Dam last week. Bambiso is originally from iDutywa in the Eastern Cape, and had been living with his friend Sthembiso Mdluli after he bought a house in Graceland in Ashdown. Speaking to Echo, Mdluli said that he first noticed that Bambiso was missing when he did not fetch him from Scottsville as promised, and thereafter could not be reached on his cellphone. “I had last seen him on Saturday night as I had to wake up early the following morning to go to work. When I came back, he was not there. We communicated via whatsapp, and he told me that he had left with a friend. “He had agreed to fetch me in Scottsville, but later on he said that he could not, and could not be reached on his cellphone. “After seeing days passing by, I asked the friend whom he had said he had left with, and he denied ever going with him. I then contacted his work, and they even came to his

After opening a case, they began on a search for him and a gruesome discovery was made at Nonzika area near Nagle Dam last week. “I could not even identify him as he was bent beyond recognition. His father had to come down from the Eastern Cape to identify him,” continued Mdluli. When contacted, his father refused to comment, saying that the matter is being handled by the police. SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said that two suspects Ayanda Ndlovu (27) and Thembelani Gwala (21) appeared in court last week and were remanded in custody until 26 August. Elderly couple lose hope >> As they are waiting for government to build them a house, the one they are occupying is crumbling. NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

Peter and Nesta Gebane say they won't vote since the government is failing them.

A KWASHANGE elderly couple in the Vulindlela have expressed their annoyance at the slow pace of housing delivery in the area and vowed not to vote again. Peter (84) and Nesta Gebane told Echo that the condition of the mud house they are living in is not different from that of a chicken coop. They said their six roomed mud house has now been reduced to a four roomed house due to walls falling apart. WhenEchovisitedthecoupleitnoticed that one bedroom and the dinning room were flushed away by heavy rains, according to them. “Due to walls falling down we now use anything just to keep them stand-

ing”, said the couple. Gebane said they were promised that they would be one of the prioritised residents when the housing projectwasintroducedinthearea. He said he would not cross the ballot paper because so far it has never resulted in anything positive for his family. “I’m pleading to the government to do something about elderly people like us who are faced with house challenges.Iamnotaskingforhimtobuild us a house because it seems impossible. All I’m asking for is for him to at least provide us with the concrete building blocks and we will build the

house ourselves. “Any weather condition has an effect on us, especially the rain and windy conditions. What makes it worse is that there is an electriccablethatislooseinthehouse. We fear that could cause any sort of damage to either one of us. I have always been a loyal voter hoping that my vote would be my voice. “So far none of that has happened; we are still living under the same conditions. The conditions we are living under are drastically getting worse,” said Gebane. Concurring with her husband Nesta Gebane said: “What is the use of voting if it’s not helping in anyway? Ward 4 Councillor Mercy Buthelezi could not be reached for comment after several attempts.

Both of them are guilty, they should have never misbehaved because they are both married. It seems like everyone is blaming Vavi and people are forgetting he didn’t force her to get down with him.

THE general secretary of Congress of South African Trade Union (Co satu), Zwelinzima Vavi was suspended last Wednesday following ac cusations that he had sex with his 26 yearold subordinate in the un ion federation headquarters. The woman had accused him of rape but later withdrew the charges during an internal hearing. Vavi had said it consensual sex and apologised for his indiscretion. NOMPENDULO NGUBANE took to the streets of Pietermaritzburg to find out what people had to say.

Phindile Nzimande

Nkosenhle Cele

The woman was not forced, it was her choice to do what she did with Vavi. He is not the only person at fault but this woman too made a big mistake. I guess what made Vavi‘s matter to be out in the open is because he is a politician.

A leader is someone who at all times must lead and practise what he preaches. In this case Vavi’s failed to do that. As the youth we look up to people like him as our role models. He has destroyed his leadership qualities and for that he must face the consequences.

“There is a word ‘no’ that is nor mally used when you don’t want anything to be done against your will. The woman should have said no or she should have punched him on the face if she had to. She didn’t do any of this and that clearly says she was not forced but she did it on her own will.”

“The high lighted mis take in all of this is that these two people are married. They have both be trayed their life partners and the worse part about all of this is that it is now out in the open. Vavi has disappointed the country as a leader and he deserved to be suspended.”

to be implemented. “Ifthenationalassociation’s(NSA) selectors and inspectors were able to seeoneoutstandingplayerinourUMgungundlovu team without reaching the final stages of the event, you can imagine [what could happen] if we can honestly go all out [in search of new talent]. “We already proved it that there’s talent in local netball circles, maybe we need to re-visit our approach in

our development programmes, especially at the domestic level,” said Nkomo. Nkomo says the government is always supportive and pro-active about the game, but domestic associations in the communities need to function properly. She also believes more education is needed for the development officers, coaches and administrators. “Quality players are produced

from the grassroots level. If the game is properly developed in our communities at an early age and domestic league, you can imagine how many players will represent our district at the provincial and national levels? “We also need to organise more courses for everybody involved in the game, especially the coaches. The game is changing every year and more education is needed ,” said said. -Jerry Barnes.

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA IT is misleading to say practice makes perfect. We can never achieve perfection in life. Young players should be taught to strive for excellence through purposeful practice. It is also true that not all practices are meaningful exercises. The practice sessions of aspiring champions have a specific and never-changing purpose i.e. progress. Any practice session that does not push a person beyond mental and physical limits, is a waste of precious time. We need to find answers on whether our training sessions do prepare our players for challenges of modern football. Are we training hard and smart enough to produce world class footballers? It is also true that world class footballers are a product of world class coaches. Is it fair that every time Bafana Bafana loses matches, the blame is placed on players? The difference between South Africa and other football nations lies in the quality of football education given to young players.Weneedcoachesatevery level who can ensure that every second, minute, and hour in training is used productively. We need knowledge and coaching skills more than financial resources. Money cannot coach our footballers. I think the amount spent by the government in education in the last twenty years confirms the above. Generally, the use of a ball in

training is rare in most clubs. Young boys and girls spend more time doing things that are not related to the game. These days it is obvious that a lot more time is spent practicing goal celebrating movements. Players are coming up with all kinds of dance movements and yet fewer goals are being scored. Football coaches need to work a bit harder if the game is to improve. Training sessions that result in progress require creativity from coaches. The present and future game requires intelligent footballers. This has huge implications on how young players are trained today. If we continue making children do meaningless exercises e.g. running laps, road running and all kinds of exercises with no resemblance to football, the future will be very difficult. It is also worth noting that many young players are thrown in competitions without any training. School sport organisers and our organisation are still to learn that children need more training than competition. This is one of the reasons for cheating. We look for bigger and older children because of poor technical-tactical skills. We are always looking for ways and means of doing less and reaping more. Lastly, it is proper that we thank Bonginkosi “Chief” Madlala and his SASFA members for theorganisationoftheunder-15 provincial tournament. Well done to you and your sponsors – Coca-Cola.

and if their recent form is anything to go by, Amakhosi are in trouble. Pirates captain, Lucky Lekgwati says Caf competitions are different to domestic cup games, especially the Soweto derby. He also hopes his team mates will be able to transfer their current form to the derby. “If we can be able to do that on Saturday, Chiefs will find it difficult to deal with us and are in trouble,”said Lekgwati. The former Chiefs star goalkeeper, Brian Baloyi said both teams will feel the pressure and stress of making the fans happy, but will be a cracking semi-final between the two Soweto giants. “It won’t be easy, it’s a nerve wrecking match, but the standard will be high and the best and lucky team on the day will take the honours.” said Baloyi.- Jerry Barnes

AS the saying goes, the turf always suffer when the two bulls battle it out! On Saturday, the country is expected to be divided into two again, when the two Soweto traditional archrivals, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs lock horns. TheParktownandtheNaturena-basedoutfitswillplaytheirfirstlegoftheMTN8,popularly known as Wafa-Wafa. Amakhosi recently won the annual Black Label Cup by beating Amabhakabhaka 1-0 at FNB. Chiefs followers need to be wise and not be short-sighted or fooled by the off-season Black Label tournament. Pirates recent form around Africa in Caf competitions means the black and white outfit is on the roll again and can easily outsmart any opponent and anywhere. Last week the Mighty Bucs convincingly mummified one of the Egyptians giants, Zamalek 4-1 at Orlando Stadium
