Sobantu residents, including Sobantu secondary school pupils, gathered outside the house of 83 yearold gogo Alpha Zungu in Khambule street.

Gogo forced out of home >> Gogo of Khambule street in Sobantu returned last week from a sevenyear jail term in Westville prison, and was not welcomed

T

HE happiness of being home after serving a seven-year jail term was short-lived for an 83year Sobantu gogo, after angry residents hounded her out on her return last Thursday. Community members gathered outside gogo Alpha Zugu’s house in Khambule street and started shouting, ordering her out of the area immediately. They accused her of abducting their children and mutilating their private body parts to sell for muti purposes. “We don’t want her here, let her leave us in peace. Our children are not

safe here with her around,” shouted one resident. Another resident, who spoke to Echo on condition of anonymity, said she stumbled upon Zungu (widely known as ugogo onensumpa) as she went into her house and learnt that she had just arrived home. “I immediately raised the alarm. We don’t need her in Sobantu. The reason she was arrested and convicted was because she mutilated the private body part of a Sobantu Secondary School teenage girl. Unfortunatelyforher, thegirlescaped before she killed her. She went straight to the police who came to her house to arrest her. “Before she went to jail, two boys aged between five and six years old,

went missing, only to be found dead with their private parts gone missing near the Msunduzi river. We have childrenthesameageandtheirsafety is not guaranteed with her back. We want the police to escort her out of the area,” said the source. However,Zungu, whowasjailedat Westville prison since 2008, contradicted the story. She told Echo that she was arrested and sentenced to seven years after a teenage girl pointed her out to the police as a person who helped her rapist. The man, whose name was given as Tony Mkhize, was related to gogo Zungu and is serving 25 years in jail for the rape. “I don’t know anything about

private body parts that were removed. But what happened is that a girl came to my house and pointed me out to the police as a person who helped Tony to rape her,” she said. As she was telling her story, some residents in the house were shouting: “stop lying”. She seemed confused as she said she did not know where to go to. “Mama, there are a lot of weird things about you. You were the only gogo in the area who used to ride a bicycle. People are very scared of you,” said a resident, KK Mngadi. As a sign of being scared of her, when she stood up to close the door because of noise while speaking with the reporter, some residents in her yard, including children from Soban-

tu secondary school, ran away. The residents ululated when Mountain Rise police arrive to take her away to a place of safety. However, when contacted by Echo, police spokesperson Captain Zenzele Ndlovu said they have no report of such incident. Ward 35 councillor Thandi Matiwane said she does not encourage what the residents did but said that Zungu should have consulted the local leadership before coming back. “This would have allowed us to gauge the feelings of the people and maybe plead with them to accept her back. But she did not do so. For now it is clear that she is not needed in the area and there is not much I can do,” said Matiwane.

28-YEAR-OLD woman living with albinism landed in hospital on Saturday after she was allegedly attacked and called a monkey and a curse by neighbours in Imbali on Saturday. However the neighbours have called the allegation a lie, concocted to conceal the real issue which they sayistheirneighboursstubbornness. According to Thandi Gwala, the ordeal ensued after her daughter, Ntombenhle Majola, asked the next door neighbour’s younger brother whyhewaslitteringintheirtheiryard after she saw him throwing rubbish into it. Gwala said the man had thrown a bag of rubbish into her yard in Unit 4 Imbali near the Greater Edendale Mall, unaware that she was watching him. “When I asked why he was doing this he just ran into his home. I later took the same garbage and threw it next to the railway line near their house. Five members of the family, including the offender, then confronted us, saying I’m not supposed to dispose of rubbish there. My daughter then asked him why he threw the rubbishinsideouryard.Thenthisboy started assaulting her with fists and later bit both of her breasts,” said Gwala. She said that as she was busy trying to keep the other surging attackers at bay, she heard her daughter screaming “don’t bite me.”

Baqhubeka bemshaya, baze bayomxhoma esigxobeni sikagesi. Ngathi uma sengibona ukuthi usengafa noma inini, ngamncenga ukuthi avume

Neighbours stand-off over rubbish bag

>> Child allegedly bitten on breasts during the scuffle between the two Ntombenhle Majola who is the daughter of Thandi Gwala of Imbali’s Unit 4. Gwala says her daughter was beaten up by her neigh bour’s brother Zwelakhe Nzi mande. But Nz imande’s sister Nomaswazi Dlamini denies this.

“It was then that I noticed that she was bleeding from both breasts. Before I took her to hospital, I phoned thePlessislaerpoliceandexplainedto them what had happened. As I was preparing to take my daughter to hospital, I saw the neighbours going to the police station. I then decided to go to the police station in person. When I got there, they were already there,” she said. Police advised them to try to resolve the matter amicably first, and then the neighbours apologised to Gwala, saying they were rash in their decision to ‘fight her’. But she did not accept it. “Theysworeatusandassaultedus

bahambe naye baye emaphoyiseni.” Uqhube wathi wabe esecela umfowabo ukuthi amphelezele, kepha washonela endleleni. Uthi indodana yakhe yayiwumuntu owuthandayo umculo, ngoba yaze yabhala umdwebo (tattoo) engalweni womculo, okuyiwona abamsola ngawoukuthiuxhumeneneqembulama26.Uthe:“Ngifunaukubonaubulungiswa. Kuyimanje ngisele ngedwa njengoba nendodana yami eyayisisele yashona ngonyaka odlule ngenxa yengcindezi,” kusho yena. Uthe icala lihlehliselwe umhla ka-10 kuNhlolanja ( June).

in front of community members, that’s why I want the matter to go to court,” she told Echo. Another neighbour, Nomaswazi Dlamini whose maiden name is Nzimande, described Gwala as her sister since they are of the same clan. She said she was not at home when the scuffle ensued but she knows that there is no truth in Gwala’s version . “I love sis Thandi, Even other neighbours can attest to this. But what she is saying is not true. She was the one attacking my children. Dlamini said this happened after her younger brother Zwelakhe Nzimande returned the rubbish Gwala had dumped in front of her gate,” said Dlamini. She said Nzimande only retorted by saying Gwala’s daughter would turn black like all of them when she reportedly called him a one-eyed fool. “She is the cause of the problem because of the rubbish that she dumps in front of our gate. We asked the councillor [Pat Jaca] to clear that place in December but after that, sis Thandi is the only one continuing to dump there,” said said. . She concurred that her family members apologised to Gwala at the police station, ‘returning her rubbish’, but she did not budge. Majola was discharged from hospital on Sunday. Plessislear police spokesperson, Captain Musa Ntombela, confirmed that both families have opened cases ofcommonassaultagainsteachother and the matter is currently under investigation

VER a month has gone by since 200 schoolgirlswereabductedfromschoolby Islamic terrorists in Chibok in Nigeria, and the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) has joined forces with other women activists in pleading for their return. In a bid to condemn this act, the KZNCC hosted a ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ campaign recently, where it invited different religious leaders around the city in a joint prayer. “We continue to be concerned about issues that affect children as they are the least strongest group in the community. We are concerned about these children who have become targets of these terrorist groups,” said CEO Dr Douglas Dziva. Dziva added that through prayer, they condemntheseactsandalsowantmentopledge to commit themselves to be part of the movement that protects children. “These young girls were abducted from school which is an infringement of their rights as children and as females. We still have that problem in African countries where men have certain attitudes towards women. We are calling for a society that respects women.” Dziva said they were not only praying about the abduction of these young girls, but also for the spate of accidents in the provinces, with the latest one being pupils killed in Mooi River. Sipho Khuzwayo from the Sanco Development Institute said that they support initiatives which aim at bringing spiritual power. “We should not wait for such an event to happen before we pray together as a continent. We tend to look up to politicians for every solution. They need our support and also listen to our views.”

MSUNDUZI MUNICIPALITY

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO ESTABLISH MUNICIPAL ENTITIES: FOR THE MSUNDUZI MUNICIPALITY TRADING ENTITIES Notice Is hereby given in terms of Section 78(3) of the Municipal Systems Act and Section 84 (2) (a) of the Municipal Finance Management Act, for the proposed establishment of external municipality entities for the following municipal services, THE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, MARKET, TOURISM AND FORESTRY PLANTATION FUNCTION AND DESCRIPTION OF MUNICIPAL ENTITY The Municipality has taken a resolution to manage the municipal trading entities through external mechanisms. Emanating from the recent municipal entities prognosis it was concluded that, in order to enhance the income generation of the municipal trading enterprises, there is a need for a thorough business re-engineering and a regular review of their operations and if the entities are managed internally as one of the municipal line departments they tend to lag behind the industry trends to be competitively positioned. The proposed Entities for Msunduzi Municipality will be designed to do industry analysis and place entities within their respective industry framework, understand the competitive nature of the industry and enable the entities to optimise their competitive position thus enhancing the return on their investment. Msunduzi Municipality invites the public and interested parties to provide any comments or objections to the establishment of the Municipality Entities within 21 days of this publication. TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA

Defining talent JUNE is traditionally a period when talent scouting is done in South African football. Professional football clubs will be calling thousands of eager young boys to be put under the microscope. In modern football clubs, coaches have a broader view of talent. Presently, the majority of us think tricky feet define football talent. The problem is that players with fast feet so often trip up in the mid to long term. Coaches in South Africa need to have a broader view of what constitute winning talent. We need a more expansive definition of talent. Intelligent coaches understand that talent comes in both physical and mind-set form. The greatest footballers are a product of their dreams and relentless love for practice. Generally, there are no footballers who are not talented. Talent comes in different forms. Thereareplayerswhoaregifted with intelligence, a desire to

learn and a passion for the game. There are players who time a tackle like a concert pianist times the notes in a bar. You also have those with silky and velvety touches. A coach therefore should help in nurturing and building existing abilities and qualities. Presently, mind-set talent is neglected. Maybe this explains why we are battling in international competitions. Hard work, persistence, focus and perseverance are some ofthesoftskillsrequiredifapersonistosucceed.Whatistheuse of having a player with world class dribbling skills but a very weak mind-set? A player that easily gives up when the goings are tough? The good news for both players and coaches is that both the mental and physical skills can be developed. Coaches have to believe in their players and help players believe in themselves. It is also important for young players to understand that not everyoneisthesame.Youcanbe the best version of yourself. It is possible to improve and get better through hard and quality work. Naïve coaches tend to think they are prophets. It is not possible to know another person’s limits and to predict the future. I appeal to players not to listen to those who say that their ambitions are too big. Unzima Lomthwalo!

HE Msunduzi Disabled Club (MDC) is appealing to the community to assist them with their preparations for the localwheelchairracethatwilltake place on 30 May in Ashdown. The group is looking for a sponsorship of wheelchairs and hand cyclers. The group is appealing to the community so that they can attempt to follow up their victory atthefirsteditionoftheHermanus Wheels & Runners Race which took place in Cape Town. The MDC was sponsored by the Department of Sports and Recreation and Induduzo Funeral Home and came back with medals.

According to MDC member Christiah Luthuli, the group has done its utmost best to improve on last year’s results. Luthuli said they are all very excited that they were able to win and come back with gold and silver medals. “We are happy to have done so well. This year we had our first competition in February in Cape Town. In May, we travelled to Cape Town again as the MDC and now we are preparing for the local wheelchair race that will be happening in Ashdown. We would appreciate it there was somewhere where we could practice different codes of sport. We love playing table tennis and other sports, the only thing that is preventing us from doing so is a facility to practice,” said Luthuli.
