UE to the high price of food, people are shifting to cheaper brands which have also become unaffordable, said Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (PACSA) Julie Smith. PACSA was delivering their report at a recent media briefing after they had conducted a survey (Food Barometer) on the prices of food.

SOME OF THE FOODS THAT HAVE INCREASED FROM SEPTEMBER 2013 SEPTEMBER 2014 •Tomatoes 8kg: R81.84 in September 2013, R99.76 in September 2014 •Onions2kg:R14.73inSeptember2013,R15.64 in September 2014 •Cake flour 10kg: R73.49 in September 2013, R83.69 in September 2014 •Beef 3kg: R132.72 in September 2013, R159.69 in September 2014 •Chicken 8kg: R148.96 in September 2013, R174.96 in September 2014. The report back highlighted the kinds of food that are increasing astronomically, leading families to opt for the cheapest brands or to change their household menus. PACSA’s Food Barometer revealed that 32 foods, which form the basics in the shopping trolley’s of the poor working class households in Pietermaritzburg, has increased from R1509.34 to R1640.05 in September 2014. “We are seeing that households with

seven members or more are spending between R600 and R1000 a month on food, which means they cannot afford to buy a basic basket of food every month with substantial negative implications for dignity, health and well being,” said Smith. “Our findings suggest that people are not eating enough food and the food which they are able to afford is extremely deficient in nutrients. “This is having a serious impact on health and well being and is exacerbating poverty inequality and resulting in poor education, health economic and productivity outcomes. The period of relative dietary diversity where households are able to eat relatively balanced meal has declined from three weeks last year to two weeks this year. “This means that for every two out of four weeks, households are eating an extremely limited diet, mostly of starches, salt, sugar and fat. “Poor households are responding to high food prices by dropping certain foods off the plate or eating less. Foods that are off the plate are red meat, fresh milk, maas and cheese. “The high cost of maize meal, which now retails at slightly more than rice, is putting enormous pressures on households because maize meal is the staple starch,” said Smith.

FORMER managing director of The Witness, Greg Orsmond, faced 453 charges of fraud when he appeared in theDurbanSpecialCommercialCrimesCourt. Orsmond was managing director of The Witness Group and Fever Newspaper Group until he was axed in April 2013 after the discovery of “gross negligence” on his part. An audit and forensic investigation revealed Orsmond had allegedly siphoned off nearly R11 million from the mainstream and community media houses. The audit resulted in the fraud charges he faced in court. Orsmond stepped briefly into the dock, looking dishevelled and crestfallen and was released on bail of R10 000 ahead of his next appear-

ance in November. His attorney Satch Morgan said Orsmond, a father of three, had co-operated with the investigating officer and would appear in court when required. In a detailed charge sheet before the court, Orsmond is alleged to have made unauthorised payments amounting to nearly R11 million for his personal gain. The charge sheet indicated267chargesrelatedtopaymentsmade for the distribution of newspapers, but investigators claim the service was never rendered. Those charges account for nearly R10,5 million. “Investigation revealed Sky Blue Media [a Fever Newspapers subsidiary] made payments into the account of Trifid Design wherein the accused was the sole proprietor. The accused authorised and requested payment for servicesthatwereneverrendered,”thecharge sheet reads. The remaining 186 fraud charges arise from alleged ghost payments for distribution the state contends actually went to private buildingupgradestohishomeandwhichwere worth nearly R670 000. “Investigations revealed this was for private and personal work done on the accused’s farm in Shelly Beach.” In a handwritten affidavit penned by Orsmond, he indicated he had made an effort to fully co-operate with the investigation team and would continue to do so. He also said he was employed and his income supported his family.

Police warning to the public

The National Energy Regu lator (Nersa) recently an nounced that Eskom’s 2015/2016 tariff increase will be 12.7%.

T

HE Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (Pacsa) believes that the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) decision to allow for Eskom’s 12.7% tariff increase for the 2015/2016 term will have a devastating impact ontheworkingclassandpoorhouseholds. Nersa announced the decision earlier this month. Pacsa said that the increase will erode any wage victories striking workers have won within the past year. Pacsa’s research and advocacy officer, Julie Smith, said that the Nersa increase will mean that the high tariffs Eskom will pass onto municipalities will make electricity more unaffordable. “Traditionally, profits on electricity revenue were about 15% - 18%, asmunicipalitiesusedtoaddontheir own percentage increases onto the baselineEskomtariff.Municipalities used this extra revenue to fund many of their municipal services and other municipal activities. “This means that municipalities no longer have the extra revenue to be able to fund some of their processes. So the high Eskom tariffs have a massive impact on municipal

ofthis,othernon-negotiableexpenses take precedent,” said Smith. To save electricity, Smith said that a lot of households have stopped cooking food which takes longer to prepare, such as raw sugar beans and samp. However, she said that the situation may vastly improve should Nersa intervene to make sure that the municipal tariffs are restructured to ensure affordability. “Unless Nersa intervenes at municipal level to ensure that tariffs are restructured for affordability at low consumption volumes, and that free basic electricity volumes are increased substantially and provided to all low-income households, particularly households in Pietermaritzburg on prepaid meters who are currently excluded, then the increases must be resisted.”

householdswillbattletoaffordnutritious food for their families. The way our neo-liberal economy is structured, means that other essential non-negotiable payments come before food, stated Smith. She said this includes expenses such as transport costs, electricity, which is mainly used for cooking food, burial insurance, furniture repayments, education costs and water. “When households are forced to make payments on other essential and non-negotiable expenses, where credit control and debt collection is ruthless, there is not a choice; households are forced to modify where they can manoeuvre, where they have control and this is typically food. Food is typically one of the few expenses which low-income households are able to control and because

revenues and may result in significant financial shortfalls which impact on the services they can provide their citizens,” said Smith. For the Pietermaritzburg workingclassandpoorhouseholds,Smith said that the increase will force their monthly electricity expenses to increase by a minimum of R59.14 to R525 per month. “Eskom’s increases will erode any wage victories striking workers have won. High electricity tariffs are a direct threat to the ability of working class households to secure sufficient and nutritious food. It will result in massive protests across the country, as ordinary people will be forced to fight to put food on their tables,” said Smith. Should municipalities increase their tariffs to match Nersa’s 12% increase for Eskom, the low-income

THE Pietermaritzburg police have warned members of the public to always be cautious when they approach a robot in the Pietermaritzburg central business district (CBD). “They must ensure that all their windows are closed and all doors locked. This is when members of the public become victims of criminals,” said the police in a press release. According to the police, these criminals demand money and valuable items such as cellphones in such a way that some of the victims are forced at gunpoint. “And members of the public are further warned that those incidents must be reported to the police for help andsometimes, withthehelpofCCTV footage, the suspects can be traced and identified positively.” said the police.

“IF THERE IS SOMETHING THAT YOU FEEL IS STRANGE, CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR. EARLY DETECTION ALLOWS FOR EARLY TREATMENT”

ITH October being breast cancer awareness month, NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to breast cancer survivor Angie Mthiyane who, after eight months of chemotherapy treatment, is growing stronger each day. Mthiyane (39) was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. Despite feeling a throbbing pain in her left breast, she had to fight hard for her diagnosis as doctors did not detect anything. “I love my health, so I make sure that I visit doctors regularly. When I felt a throbbing pain under my left breast, I immediately knew that something was wrong. I went to the clinic and I was referred to another hospital where doctors did not discover anything. I had to fight to be referred to another hospital and I insisted that they do an ultra sound. That’s when I discovered that the cancer was actually in my right

Since being diagnosed, she has become a vegetarian and drinks only water. Mthiyane said that it is important for every woman to have regular check-ups as cancer can affect anyone, irrespective of age. “Most people die because they are too scared to confront the truth. It is not only women, but we have the same problem with men who are afraid to go for check ups. “If there is something that you feel is strange, check with your doctor. Early detection allows for early treatment.” Mthiyane said that her source of inspiration is knowing that there is God, gym, attending support groups and living a stress free life. She said while more people are diagnosed with cancer, there is still that stigma of bewitchment, particularly among black communities. “Being diagnosed with cancer does not mean the end of the world. Wishing matrics all the best I WOULD like to wish the matric class of 2014 all the best in their final examination. I want them to think critically of all the sacrifices that they have made up until this time. They have come across hardships and difficulties throughout their journey and now it’s time for themtoshowcasetheirbrilliance. I want them to know that there are people who will bad mouth them as they write, people who will give them unnecessary pressure by telling them that they will be expecting to see them in newspapers, but they must focus on what they can do, and do it in a marvellous way. Above all, they must pray on a daily basis that the Almighty God protect and guide them through-

ADIES from all seven local municipalities will be competing for the title of Miss UMgungundlovu 2014 at the Golden Casino on Sunday. This year’s theme aligns with the ongoing celebration for 20 years of democracy; it is for this reason that this year’s Miss UMgungundlovu will be historic, said organiser Mthobisi Mkhize. “This is another way of our continuous effort to enhance development amongst youth and continue to develop various plat forms for them, to show case their talents. We uti lize our platforms to mo tivate and inspire young people, especially those from the rural and previously disadvan taged communities. “The aim is to afford them opportu nities to exercise their God given talent, in a youthful and development focused manner,” he said.

Mkhize said that this year, the show revolves around 20 years of democracy. “Each girl will be expressing the years from 1994 to 2014 through FIVE LUCKY fashion. SUCCESS STORY

My name is Priya (43 years), from Howick, Pietermaritzburg. From the bottom of my heart I thank Mr Baka for saving my marriage. My husband of 12 years had been taken away from me by another woman. After moving from one herbalist to another without any success, a colleague at work told me about Mr Baka. I went there and within three days my husband came back, using water and a mirror, Baka also showed me all my enemies. I have no other way to thank this man, only to tell the whole world about him. He can also boost business, chase bad spells and tokoloshe, unfinished jobs, quick sale of property, illness, lucky oil to win at the casino and many more. The Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg, in conjunction with Hulamin Athletics Club, organised and held a successful Swift Half Marathon recently. President Liz Dewes awarded the prizes and thanked the sponsors, Hulamin, CPW, KFC, SOMTA and Coca Cola for their support. Over 450 runners took part in the half marathon and a further 210 ran the 10 km course. The overall winner of the men’s race, known only as Philani and running for Boxer Athletic Club, clocked one hour six minutes and 23 seconds while the first lady home was Karen Chepkwenoi of Maxed Elite who finished in one hour 21 minutes and 18 seconds. Wheeling her chair to victory HAVING won a wheelchair race, a local woman has set her eyes on continental and world races to show her racing prowess on a wheelchair on bigger stages. An active member of the Msunduzi Disabled Club (MDC), Dlaziphi Luthuli recently demonstrated her capability as a wheelchair bound racer to her friends and athletics followers when she won the race in Thamboville, near Glenwood. She expressed her happiness in being in sports and said that her mission is to become a champion in Africa and in the world. Luthuli said that she fell in love with wheelchair sport (athletics) in 2012 and she has never looked back. Luthuli said that disabled people are also human beings and need to be treated as normal members of society, but they also need to keep themselves active in their lives. She encouraged more disabled athletes to come on board and officially join MDC in order to grow and raise more awareness in disabled sport. “We all know the challenges faced by people inmycondition, butwealsoneedtogooutthere and be active in our communities and especially take part in sports. “To sit alone and feel sorry for yourself is not going to help. Go out there, take part in sports and keep healthy and fit,” said Luthuli. She took part in the ladies run and turned it into her own event. She led the pack from the early stages of the 5km race, stayed in the front all the way and won comfortably. The Cato Ridge based athlete is already a

provincial and national champion in the 10km and 21.1km events. “It’s a bit of an achievement, but I will only rest or be satisfied when I become the world champ in those races or at least bring a medal home from the Olympics or Commonwealth Games. “My other big dream is to run a Comrades Marathon and finish it,” said Luthuli. Luthuli said that local wheelchair sports can go far and be taken to the next level by the local club, despite challenges. “In most cases, we race with the wrong wheelchairs for this sport. We are desperately in need of at least three or four for our club. We don’tmindsharingandhaveturnswhenweare competing or training. “The KZN Department of Sports and Recreation always comes on board to help us, like paying for our transport when we travel to provincial and national events. But they can’t do everything for us. “We are pleading with business people out there around the Mgungundlovu District to please extend a helping hand,” said Luthuli. Department of Sports and Recreation Umgungundlovu district manager, Busi Nkomo, said that the MDC is the best example that disabled people can also stay active in sports and keep fit. Nkomo also said that athletes must be encouraged to not only look to one code of sport. “We need to encourage them to take part in sports, but we must also remember that there arealotoftypesofsportoutthere,”saidNkomo. - Jerry Barnes.

Ultra triathlon entries flood in T

HE KZN Midlands is bracing itself for the biggest field the Midlands Ultra Triathlon has had since its inception in

2009. “Entries from all over Africa and the world have been flooding in since April this year and at this point, we have far exceeded our past race entries. “The Midlands Ultra, one of Africa’s most popular triathlons which takes place on 30 November at the beautiful Midmar Dam, has an entry cap of 1000 competitors,” said race director Damian Bradley from B-Active Sports. On the international stage, the overseas Triathlon field gets stronger each year, with over 35 international athletes already attending the November race coming from Dubai, United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, Spain, United States, Swaziland, Botswana and Germany. “Past winners of the Ultra include James Cunnama, Kent Horner, Stuart Marias, Donovan Van Gelder, Gerhard De bruin, someofwhomhavealreadysecuredtheirplace on the Ultra starting line. “The event has grown in leaps and bounds over the past three years by securing strategic

event partnerships. These partnerships have allowed us to focus on giving our ultra athletes what they want, one of the best loved triathlons in South Africa” said Bradley. B-Active Sports, the organisers of the event, have confirmed a free kidzone for all the competitors kids to play in while they are racing. The kidzone, organised and managed by Topgear promotions who specialise in kids play areas, will provide a safe and secure sign in and out area, where children will be able to participate in numerous games and activities including: colouring in books and crayons, swing-ball, volleyball, kiddies pool table, soccer goals, jumping castle, carousel swings, mini-trampolines and more. The kidzone will open at 6.30am and close after prize giving. Anyone looking for a quality exciting event should give the Midlands Ultra or Sprint race a go. The event can be done in teams or individually and there is something for everyone. To book you place, go to www.ultratri.co.za.

>> Mazda2 is the fifth Mazda to win this award

M

AZDA South Africa’s next-generation, the Mazda2 won the 2014/15 Japanese Car of the Year. The new Mazda2 is expected to arrive in South Africa early in 2015. Following the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3, the soon-to-be-launched in South Africa Mazda2 is the fourth in Mazda’s lineup of new-generation models that adopt the full range of SkyActive technology and the Kodo-Soul of Motion design language. Mazda says its aspiring to create a newgeneration subcompact that would shatter people’s preconceived notions about this class of vehicle. These include an ideal driving position and pedal layout, a human machine interface that prioritises safety, high-quality interior and exterior styling, and a newlydeveloped SkyActive-D 1.5-litre clean diesel engine which offers maximum torque equivalent to a 2.5-litre petrol engine and outstanding fuel efficiency. All passenger vehicles with an expected annual sales volume of over 500 units,

announced or launched in Japan from November 1 2013 and September 30 2014 were eligible for the 2014 Car of the Year Japan award. The last Mazda to be named the Car of the Year Japan was the Mazda CX-5 in 2012. The Mazda2 is the fifth Mazda to win this award. Mazda South Africa MD David Hughes said: “Mazda is both honoured and grateful that the Mazda2 has received such a prestigious award. Mazda Southern Africa is inspired by this award, and following the local launch of the Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5 all-new petrol & diesel engines, we are looking forward to introducing the all-new award winning Mazda2 to the South African market.” SkyActiv, says the automaker, is the umbrella term for Mazda’s range of nextgeneration technologies - including petrol and diesel engines, transmissions, body and chassis - developed under Mazda’s ‘sustainable zoom-zoom’ vision to provide both driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance.

THIS month Honda celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Gold Wing touring-style motorcycle with the announcement of a “birthday edition” Wing. That’s a limited number and some will reach South African showrooms. Just five years after producing its first superbikein1969,thecelebratedCB750Honda once again thought “out of the box” by creating the first long-distance touring bike the GL1000 Gold Wing. It boasted shaft drive, a water-cooled flat four engine, disc brakes all around, a touring bike that set standards of comfort and sophistication previously unheard of. Factor in a low centre-of-gravity 19-litre fuel tank, the bike offered a new twist to the definition of high-speed motorcycle touring. The bike had a relaxed feel about it, at 120km/h the motor loped along at only 4000rpm. From standstill a 400m sprint saw a time of around 13 seconds, putting the bike in the same class as the rapid Kawasaki 750 Triple and even a Laverda Jota. Many owners fitted additional touring equipmentsuchaspanniersandheftyfairings with built-in sound systems – the Wing would still managed to pull like a locomotive. Japan was considered too small to handle serious production numbers so, in 1981, the plant was moved lock, stock and barrel to the Marysville Motorcycle plant in Ohio, in the U.S. Interestingly, sales from 1979 to 1999 surpassed a million, with engine sizes also increasing along the way, ie: 1100cc, 1200cc, 1500cc (six cylinders for 1988). In 2001 the GL 1800 came into being – the first new model in 13 years. It was fuel-injected but a considerably lighter machine thanks to an all-aluminium frame. Anti-lock brakes were optional; the engine, incidentally developed a car-like 97kW. Coaches failing TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA THE challenge for South African football technicians is huge. Football, particularly in Europe, South America and Asia, is developing at an incredible speed. People are working very hard to improve technical levels of their football. There are new discoveries every day in technical, tactical, psychological and physical aspects. We waste too much energy focusing on criticising others instead of researching and studying our game. Presently, everything that we teach is based on information developed in foreign countries. We lack in discovering things for ourselves. We are fond of copying others without even checking the relevancy of the information. Briefly, South African football coaches are failing the local game. Clive Barker, the 1996 Nations Cup coach, is the only football coach to have won a major trophy outside our country. The rest of us spend too much time on petty issues instead of developing the game. There are many coaches with various Safa coaching certificates that are hanging in the walls of their living rooms. The work of South African coaches should be reflected in footballers competing in bigger European leagues. It is a fact that only Steven PienaarandThulaniSereroplayatadecentlevel. The problem is that very few guys are doing the actual coaching. Too many of us see football as an easy way to fame and fortune. People are not prepared to make sacrifices in improving their craft. We need to focus on important things if South Africa is to produce coaches and

FTER Maritzburg United were bundled out of the 2014/15 Telkom Knockout 1-0 by Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu remain the only hope for KwaZulu-Natal in the competition. USuthu eliminated Bloemfontein Celtic 3-2, coming back from two goals down. If they do well again against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, their supporters will find consolation and hope that might lead them to forgetting their bad

league run so far. Having failed to win a single league game this season, the club’s management decided it was time to part ways with coach Craig Rosslee. The coaching baton has been temporarily given to Wilfred Mugeyi, who was his assistant. Tickets for the much-anticipated 2014/15 Telkom Knockout (TKO) quarter-final fixtures are now on sale. The TKO quarter-finals will be played
