VOX POPS AS the country celebrates 20 years of freedom this Sunday, NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to “born frees” to find out what this day means to them. N 27 April 1994, millions of South Africans waited eagerly at voting stations to take part in the country’s first democratic elections. Lwazi Dlamini (20) from Imbali Unit BB said: ”Being a young South African in this era means we have achieved most of the things that our forefathers fought for, particularly freedom.”

‘Born frees’ reaping the fruits of freedom Ndumiso Zuma (18) from KwaPata “To me the day means freedom. We have been given opportunities that have never existed before. We are able to voice our opinions without fear of victimisation. We have been given the authority to criticise our government when we are not happy. We are active participants of this democ

racy, There is no racial discrimination anymore. As our democracy grows older, I would like to see our government giving back land to land claimants who have been waiting for years. We would also like to see more bursaries being issued and more job opportunities being created.”
Mncedisi Hlatshwayo (18) from Azalea “I am very grateful to those freedom fighters who fought for liberation as people are now equal. People of dif ferent races can now sit together and share ideas. We go to multi racial schools without any fear.”
“We are free to walk anywhere, live anywhere and also to take part in different sports. In the past there were certain sports that were associat ed with certain racial groups, which is no longer the case. My only wish for the years to come is a united, rainbow nation because there is still some racial tension. Being a young South African in this era means achieving freedom that the older generation fought for.”
Bongiwe Zuma (19) from College Road “We are able to walk freely without carrying our ID books and without the fear of dodging bullets. We are grateful that we have never experienced the pain that was experienced by those before us. “We go to multiracial schools and we are given equal education and opportunities. My wish is that as our freedom grows old er, there will be less crime, a clean envi ronment and a better quality of life.” Happy Shange (19) from Bisley said: “We do not know the pain that was experienced by our elders in fighting for freedom, but we are now bene fiting from the fruits of their labour and we are appreciative of that. We have equal learning opportuni ties and there is even Black Economic Empowerment, where black people now occupy po sitions that they would have never have occupied before. As we deepen our democracy, I would like to see more and more young people grabbing opportuni ties. Those born post 1994 should stop blaming apart heid for their fail ures.”

WAZULU-NATAL has the highest HIV prevalence, standing at 16.9%, according to the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Their report, which was released at the beginning of April, has also revealed that women aged between 30 and 34 have the highest infection rate followed by males aged 35 to 39. The infected number of South Africans is at 6.4 million, which is more 1.2 million more than 2008, said the report. TreatmentActionCampaignKZNcoordinator Mzamo Zondi, said the HSRC report confirms that progress has been made against the epidemic, however progress is not as fast the nation would like it to be. “KZN is still the epicentre with a 16.9% HIV prevalence among people of reproductive age which is 3.6 times than that of their counterparts in the Western Cape. The prevalence in KZN is significantly higher than that of all other provinces. “HIV doesn’t only destroy families but communities and institutions. Today, if we are
to tackle HIV effectively, we must once more look deeper into our souls and our society and question, in particular, our tolerance of inequality. The continuing new infections are an emergency. “Today HIV is still a virus and it is still the 10 year old child who is denied access to condoms at school, despite our knowledge that they remain the most efficacious means of HIV prevention,” he said. New infections are the more controversial part of the report, he said. “They estimate that there were 469,000 new infections in 2012. This is down from a peak of about 570,000 in the mid 2000s, but it is still shockingly high. In other reports we have seen much lower estimates for the current rate of new infections, so we still have to figure out why the rate identified in the HSRC report is so high. One great thing about the KZN Department of Health is that it is willing to work with everyone.Letusjoingovernmentinmakingthe Zazi Zivikele Campaign a success. We cannot afford complacency, Aids is most definitely not over and it still needs an exceptional effort to control it,” said Zondi.

OUTH AFRICA is a beautiful and interesting country, with good people. Life in SA, and especially its politics, is unique and has a lot of history behind it. These were the views of two USA high school pupils, Grace Day and Skye Matula (both 16 years old) who are currently on a pupil exchange programme and scholarship betweentheircountryandSouthAfrica. They are both attending school at WykehamCollegiateandarein Grade 11. “We came over last year October and we enjoyed it from day one. We will be leaving in June,” said both Day and Matula. DayisfromOklahomawhileMatula is from Wisconsin. Ofthetwo,Dayseemstobeoutspoken, open minded and relaxed. “I like politics and am interested in studying journalism after high school,” she said. Skyelooksnaturallyshyandhardly talks. Is she missing home already? “No, not at all, I like it very much here. This is a great country and a good learning curve for us,” she said. They are also very quick to point out that they respect SA and did not expect to see lions freely walking on the streets. “What was said by some tourists before the 2010 World Cup was not on. This country is not just civilised but also developing fast on other levels. It’s going far and you can imagine how it will achieve in five years to come. I am impressed with every-

thing around here,” said Day. They also both agreed that SA schools are a bit different to theirs. “Our whole high school education in government schools is totally free, but the universities are very expensive compares to SA’s,” they both concurred. They also claim uniforms are strange to them because in their country, they wear casual clothes to school. There is also something new about SA politics compared to the USA. “The way you guys campaign is totally out of this world and new to us. When we campaign in the USA, it is mainly about public debates or political parties phoning people to vote for them. It was my first time seeing a political party performing a door to door campaign,” said Day. They also observed that in SA, there are a lot of political parties compared to the USA where there are only two main or popular ones - the Republicans and Democrats. Day and Matula also had a chance to visit the local warehouse of the Gift of The Givers. According to Sallim Sayed, Gift of The Givers chief operations manager, the two pupils “wanted to understand a bit more about the organisation and its charity work.” –Jerry Barnes

Water cut-offs leave residents desperate
>> Life is hard for the community of Hanniville as water cutoffs are the order of the day
NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

ANIVILLE residents are experiencing water and electricity cut-offs daily, and they have described it as unbearable. Speaking to Echo, Musa Sithole said water cut-offs have become the order of the day, leaving residents without water supply for hours on end. Sithole said the people who are really affected are residents residing at the low-cost houses in the area. Copesville primary school in the area is also feeling the pinch, as pupils have to leave school early due to water supply interruptions. A source at the school confirmed that they are affected by the fluctuating water supply, adding that they experience about ten water cut-offs a month. “That causes a major inconvenience to the
school and the plans for the day. Pupils have to leave the school premises,” he said. “There is a new water reservoir tank that has been installed and we suspect that people might be stealing water from it. When it happens, pupils have no choice but to go home and come back when the water is available. “We are sometimes forced to cut the time table for the lessons so that we can try to have some lessons before it happens. It is a worrying issue and we don’t know how long it will keep on happening,” said the source. Sithole said they have raised the issue with their ward councillor Thandi Ndlovu, but nothing has happened. “Since last year we have been complaining about the same thing. It has become a normal issue that we live with through the day, no water and sometimes no electricity. “The water cut offs happen in the morning upuntiltheearlyhoursofthenextmorning. This

isnotthelifewedeserveasresidentsofthisarea. Could the ward councillor intervene in the matter and offer help in any way possible?” said Sithole.
Obviously annoyed, Ndlovu told the reporter to ask the Msunduzi municipality what was causing the cut-offs before hanging up the phone.

The media in particular couldnothidetheirdislikeoftheman. One cartoonist even labelled him a “moegoe” (stupid) using a pun on his surname. Since then life has gone on normally in the Constitutional court although I am sure that the fishers of wrong deeds are waiting for him to make a mistake so that they launch their attacks again. These events put South Africa on a knife edge emotionally, ideologically and politically but nothing happened that was unconstitutional. Some people get agitated when constitutional structures are challenged or disagreed with by dissenting voices including those of public office bearers. This prompts many, especiallytheoppositionandthemedia, to deduce that the constitutional
structures are under attack. The fact that constitutional structures are given enough space, freedom and resources to execute their constitutional obligations proves to me that the constitutional democracy is solid. The robust disagreements are proof that the country is maturing as a democracy. There are currently two commissions of enquiry happening over the unfortunate events that gripped the country recently and at thedawnofthedemocracy:Marikana massacre and the Arms Deal enquiries respectively. These and many other investigations by the public protector and cases at the constitutional court and many other courts are going on quietly under the watchful eye of the media. Both the courts and the chapter nine structures are kept very busy by citizens who have confidence that their cases will be competently dealt with by these institutions. This has set her apart from her sister countries in the continent when it comes to upholding human rights. This issue is a difficult and emotive one considering

the views by cultural and religious groups who abhor these people. This is also a huge test that the constitutionaldemocracyhaspassedbecause it has allowed both the sides to openly demonstratetheirfeelingsandbeliefs without stifling any views. The country, however, does face problems. Most of them are not structural, rather they result from incompetence, inefficiency, disrespectofaccounting measures and the greed of thoseofinpositionsofpower.Boththe private and the public sector are affected by this. The fixing of prices, including the bread price, a staple food for the poor, is proof of corporate greed. The Oscar Pistorius case and the Nkandla investigation have also exposed many of these weaknesses in the public sector. The racial divisions that are demonstrated in online discussionsbyparticipantsshowthatwe still carry a lot of the baggage from the apartheid era. To me all this is what puts our democracy at risk of being swallowed by the quagmire of hatred and criminality. If the state carries the burden of incompetent and corrupt officialsmoreandmorecriminalswill make this country a haven of their sordid acts. If floodgates are opened for illegal immigrants and contraband material through corruption and inefficiency we will then reach a state of being a banana republic and that will be the time when our constitutional democracy will die. The racial divisions and negative exchanges in the social networks also have a potential of dragging this country backwards considering the growing impact of social networks. Intheyoungyearsofherdemocracy, South Africa has had a number of difficult constitutional matters to resolve which she has showed great maturity dealing with, hence we are the envy of many world nations even thesocalledfirstworldcountries. Our duty is to protect this democracy.

HERE are likely to be some intense and drama-packed NFD matches across the country this week as the battle for a promotion play-off places continues. Chippa United were confirmed as the 2013/ 2014 champions last Saturday, but the race to finish second or third, thereby qualifying for a promotion play-off place, is still very much on. Now, the likes of Black Leopards, Milano United, Baroka FC, Jomo Cosmos, and even United FC, Vasco da Gama and Santos will be fighting it out for a top three finish. The week’s action began with a single fixture yesterday, when FC Cape Town hosted Maluti FET College at the NNK Rugby stadium. In 11th spot, the African Beasts have no hopes of making the play-offs and their focus will be on trying to finish a highest possible position in the league. Maluti on the other hand are in 14th spot andarenotyetguaranteedtofinishabove15th placed Roses United, who they lead by eight points with three games to go. Its on the weekend when the main crunch encounters occur, starting with Saturday’s match in Polokwane, where Sello Chokoe’s Baroka FC (fourth position, 43 points), will be favourites to overcome a Blackburn Rovers side that are rooted to the foot of the table. Saturday’s other game sees Roses United taking on Thanda Royal Zulu The game of the weekend will surely be at

THE more things change, the more they remain the same. It is hard to understandthethinkingofSafaleadership. There is nowhere in the world where senior clubs fighting for promotion have to abide by age restriction rules. The under-21 rule in both the third and second divisions is nonsense. These clubs are fighting for promotion and also compete with PSL clubs in cup competitions.
Change is needed We have spoken about this in the past that senior football leagues should not be confused with youth leagues. PSL and first division clubs should provide elite U17, U19 and U21 leagues. You cannot mix apples and potatoes. Are we not learning from the European and South American football associations? How do clubs at lower levels achieve promotion if they are asked to be football schools?

ently, it is only professional clubs and a few academies that can train and produce intelligent footballers. The sooner we stop this nonsense ofconfusingyouthdevelopmentwith promotional leagues, the better for the future of football. It is in the interest of professional clubs to train their employees i.e. footballers. Lastly,IseethenationalU17team is dominated by Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest University and Mamelodi Sundowns players. There is only one player from KZN. Where are Ajax Cape Town and Santos youth players? This looks more like a Gauteng under-17 team. Unzima lo mthwalo!
And the winners are: The Legends soccer team walked away with the Easter tournament trophy following matches which took place at Wadley stadium on Sunday. The Legends were play ing against the Whizz Kids and they won 51. All the team players are above the age of 35. According to Legends player coach, Khehla Dlamini, the team has five players who are above the age of 55. The Easter tournament is an annual event that takes place for soccer teams that are under the domestic league. Dlamini said that being active in soccer over the age of 35, the aim is to stay fit and to also motivate the youngsters that age is just a number. He said they are also trying to promote good bodies and good health to people out there.

Maritzburg United’s Farouk Kadodia is happy that his club has played into the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup and humbled that it now represents the whole of KZN.
LOCAL soccer followers can brace themselves for a big time show down when the Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates visit the city. AmaBhakaBhaka are officially scheduled to meet the local outfit Marizburg United on May 3 at Harry Gwala stadium during the Nedbank Cup semi finals at 8.15pm. To the Team Of Choice, a home semi-final draw against Pirates does not only mean luck, but a couple of things in their record books. The home side will have a chance totesttheirstrengthagainstoneofthe best teams in the country. United will have a fair chance of packing the local stadium to the rafters with their own supporters, stamp their authority during the game and send the visitors home empty handed. Team of Choice chairman, Farouk Kadodia, said that playing the NedbankCupsemi-finalathomedoes not only mean something to local soccer loving people, but is also a piece of history to the whole of KwaZulu-Natal. “Just to think that Maritzburg United are the only team from KZN left is history for the province. We are honoured and humbled to be the KZN representatives in this competition. “Our aim is to do our province and our city proud,” said Kadodia. United’s publicist, Brian Zuma, appealed to the local die-hards to make sure they buy their tickets and arrive early at the stadium. “Our twelfth player is always important in motivating the whole teamandinchangingtheatmosphere to a buzz at the stadium,” said Zuma. Meanwhile on the same day at 3pm, Bidvest Wits will host another Soweto giant, Kaizer Chiefs, at Bidvest stadium in Milpark. It’s left to be seen who will bite the dust next Saturday, but yours truly predicts an unexpected final between the Team of Choice and the Clever Boys.NedbankCupSemi-finalfixture List: 3 May 2014 Bidvest Wits vs Kaizer Chiefs at Bidvest stadium at 3 pm. YOUNG city football coach is appealing for funding after being selected for a coach training course at a football academy in the UK. Scelo Vilakazi (21) from Thembalihle near Eastwood started training other youngsters from his community when he was just 14 years old. Following trials that took place in Johannesburg last year, he was offered an opportunity to be one of the coaches at Mzansi Mayfair Academy. Vilakazi, who has been selected for a three day training course at Kuala Lumpur Soccer Academy in the UK, said that his dream might
not be fulfilled if he does not manage to collect R25 000 by June this year. Currently, he has only managed to secure a flight ticket. “I applied for this opportunity and I was called in for trials which took place locally, and now that I have been accepted my only hindrance is money. I am appealing to anyone who can help sponsormytrip, asgrabbingthisopportunity is very important to me. “My dream is to one day coach NFD teams which are next to PSL, and I believe that getting this training will increase my chances.” If everything goes well, he is to leave the country on 10 June. Anyone willing to help may contactVilakazi at 074 974 7076 or email mzansimayfairsoccer@gmail.com

LL of a sudden things are looking tough and tense from all directions and positions of the current PSL season. The battle of the top dogs between the current league log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs is very interesting if not mouth-watering. At the bottom of the log table, many people are still expecting the miracle that will save relegation candidates, Lamontville Golden Arrows from the dreaded axe. Also the local soccer followers are keeping their fingers crossed for the Pmb outfitMaritzburgUnitedtosecureaplace in the challenging top eight bracket.
