Numsa strike hurts locals

>> Local steel companies voiced their frustrations at the strike, which has already cost the country more than R300 million NQOBILE MTOLO

>>news@myecho.co.za

B

Y Tuesday afternoon, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) could not say if the current strike in the steel industry will end this week. “We do not know what the agreement outcomes will be and when they will be sorted out between the union and the employer bodies,” said KZN Numsa regional secretary Mbuso Ngubane. NgubanesaidonMonday, theunionmetwith the employer bodies to seek clarity on issues pertaining to the demands of the workers. “We are exhausting all our negotiation skills. If the strike is prolonged, it will have a detrimental effect not only on employees, but also on a number of companies in the steel industry. This just puts pressure on all of us involved in the negotiations,” said Ngubane. Numsa represents over 220 000 workers in the metal and engineering sector in SA. Numsa wants a total ban on labour brokers, catering for the needs of employees who work short time, a housing allowance of not less than R1 000 per month for each worker in the industry, training of staff and the recognition of shopstewards. The Master Builders of South Africa (MBSA) are also holding a strike which has just entered its fourth week, causing a building material shortage. In a statement, Dlamini said, “The plumbing industry has reported a critical shortage of geysers and the piling sector, which relies heavily on steel reinforcement for foundation work, is struggling to obtain supplies. Intimidation is taking place outside factories which means that MBSA members cannot collect roof sheeting and structural steel. This new setback could well be the last straw for many struggling contractors.” Last week, Numsa rejected the conditio

nal offer from the employer body, Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa), of a 10% increase in 2014, 9.5% in 2015 and 9% in 2016. Seifsa eventually withdrew this offer and by last week Friday, had announced that the new offer on the table was 10% in 2014, 9% in 2015 and 8% in 2016 for rate H workers; 8% in 2014, 7.5% in 2015 and 7% in 2016 for rate A employees. Seifsa said that the strike has already cost the country more than R300 million a day in the engineeringandmetalssectoralone.Somelocal steel companies voiced their frustrations. One of the management representatives from local company Rogue Steel said that if the strike continues for the next two to three weeks, family owned steel companies that have limited resources might have to close their doors. “One of our delivery trucks was stopped by striking Numsa members while out delivering inPinetown.Weendedupnotdeliveringtoone of our clients and we had to come back with the stock. We are currently not getting any replacement of stock. This is not a fair strike becausethereareNumsaunionmemberswho want to be back at work. “A lot of people could lose their jobs. It is not a rosy picture,” said the manager. A manager from NJR Steel said that the company has suffered shortfalls because its suppliershavenotbeenabletofulfildeliveries. “One of the company vehicles was capsized while making deliveries in Durban. There was a security company on site so they were able to report the matter to the police on our behalf. If the strike continues for the next three weeks, most of our stock will be depleted.” Meanwhile, Pietermaritzburg car dealershipshavesaidthattheyarenotaffected by the strike. The national spokesperson of Toyota, Mary Willemse, said that Toyota has suspended production on its Corolla and Innovative Multipurpose Vehicle (IMV) lines. This includes the Hilux and Fortuner production. “Production on Quantum (mini buses) and truck

plants still continues,” said Willemse. Economist Mike Schussler said that South African steel manufacturing stands at 22% and contributes to about 14% of the national economy growth. He said that no production is making the economy decline. “The strike is also hitting general purpose machinery. So it is directly affecting about 3,5% of the economy, ” he said. Schussler added that the Rand will remain under pressure more so than before. “If the Rand weakens, it will be even worse for prices which will again go up,” he said. Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business CEO Melanie Veness said that there are quite a number of businesses in the metal industry that

have been adversely affected by the strike. She said that the local steel manufacturing industry is a critical component which contributes to the local gross domestic product (GDP), hence it constitutes some of Pietermaritzburg’s largest employers. “An inability to meet order obligations can result in penalties for business and/or the loss of future orders, constraining the economy further. Prolonged labour action can close businesses down, resulting in job losses, as opposed to wage increases for some. “Prolonged strikes also make us unattractive from an investment point of view. They make employing people unattractive and increase the business case for mechanization,” said Veness.

>> news@myecho.co.za IT is still not clear yet whether Telkom’s management staff in Pietermaritzburg will be affected by the company’s restructuring and retrenchment processes. TheTelkomnationalofficehadpublicly stated that the management pool, which the company seeks to reduce, is made of up to 2650 managerial staff. Through these retrenchments, Telkom states that it wants to bring services closer to people by getting rid of unnecessary levels of management, improving customer service and experience. Telkom stated that the restructuring willkeepthebusinessafloatasithasfailed to meet revenue targets. Telkom’s communications manager, Pynee Chetty, said that he could not exact ly say how many members from manage ment are likely to be affected since processes are still ongoing. However, he said that since most of the staff from the management pool is based in Johannesburg, there is the likelihood that most of the retrenchments will hit there. Telkom has a regional office in Dur ban and the retrenchments might affect a small number of employees in that area, said Chetty. “It is unlikely that we might be having retrenchments in Pietermaritzburg, however the processes are still ongoing,” he said. Early this month, Telkom stated that through the restructuring and retrench ment process, it is not targeting specific in dividuals, but mainly wants to reduce management layers and employee costs, with the latter costing the company 30% of revenue.

Maintenance beneficiaries unpaid for months NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

MPROVEMENTS in the Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) system have been cited as a reason for delays in the payment of maintenance beneficiaries. Last week, disgruntled mothers caused chaos at the maintenance court offices in Pietermaritz street after not receiving their monies for months. While others did not receive their monies that were due on Tuesday, others had not been paid since May. Speaking to Echo, one of the mothers, Busisiwe Mbokazi, said: “Some of us have not been paid for the past two months. Whenever we inquire, we are told that the money is already in our accounts but when we check there is nothing. “We were told that there would be a

waiting period of five days after the payout day, but still the money does not reflect. Another woman, who did not want to be identified, said that she has been waiting for her money since May. She had been hoping that she would at least be able to pay school fees when schools reopened on Monday. “How are they expecting us to support our children when for the past months, we have not been paid. “They keep on telling us that delays are caused by FNB, as there are currently prob lems with their system. “Some of us are using other banks but have still not been paid. We want the Department to conduct an investigation, as sometimes we do not even get the full amount,” she said. They said that although in the past they did not get the money on stipulated dates, it has become common of late.

Department of Justice and Correctional Services spokesperson Advocate Mthunzi Mhaga said that they apologise for the inconvenience that has been caused by delays due to improvements in the Electron ic Fund Transfer system (EFT). “The electronic payment environment demands that the department puts in place measures to ensure that the money destined for maintenance beneficiaries is protected. “Contingency measures have been put in place to fast track outstanding payments. The backlog is expected to have cleared by the end of the week. “We remain committed to constantly enhancing the maintenance system to ensure that the interests of the most vulnerable in society are upheld.”

DESPERATION for space at the Plessislaer FET College continues, as hundreds of hopefuls enter their second week of camping outside the gates. The campus, which is not new to controversy, is supposed to have started lectures on Monday but had to reschedule as returning students had not been registered before new students could be accommodated. Speaking to Echo, a student who did not want to be identified said that delays in releasing the results of returning students have caused a huge

backlog, as the acceptance of new students is determined by the number of returning students who register. “Wecameherelastweektoapplyfor N4, but we were told that we have to wait for all returning students to register first, before we can be considered. Some of us are not even from Pietermaritzburg and we are forced to bring our blankets and camp outside the gate as we do not know when they will allow us to register.” Last year, Echo published a similar story where 500 students were turned away after being told that there was no available space despite having pre-registered. SRCsecretary,AyandaMtshali, said

that students have been told that there is limited space this year, and only full time students will be accommodated on campus. “It is sad to see thousands of students camping outside the gate, only to find out that 100 will be acceptedandonlyafewofthosewillget accommodation. “Previously, students had to fill in pre-registration forms before they could be accepted, but now it is on a first come, first serve basis. We also want the Department of Higher Education and Training to investigate how finances are handled at this campus, as it seems to be the only college with problems.”

Ngalenyanga ngiphonsela wonke amadoda inselelo yokunakekela imindeni yawo. Izingane zamantombazane zithandana nabantu abadala (sugar daddies) ngoba thina njengamadoda siyahluleka ukuzinika uthando ngaphakathi emakhaya. “Zikhetha ukuphumela ngaphandle ngoba thina bobaba siyahluleka ukuzondla. Ngiyafisa ukuthi ngalenyanga sibambisane njengamadoda, kungabi khona ozohlukumeza owesifazane noma ingayiphi indlela.” Uqhube wathi ukhethe lamaciko ukuthi kube yiwona ahola lomkhankaso ekushumayeleni ivangeli, njengoba ekholwa ukuthi abantu bazozwa kahle, ikakhulukazi intsha. Uthe kusenalelo gebe lokuxhumana phakathi kwentsha yesilisa nabadala, okwenza ukuthi bazithole sebenza noma yikanjani. “Kulomkhakhaso sihambela imizi ehlukene,” eqhuba, “sibheke izinkinga abantu ababhekene nazo, bese sikhuluma nabo besebancane ukuthi baziphatha kanjani njengabantu besilisa. Kunezingane ezihlezi emigwaqweni ngenxa yokuthi inkinga iqale ekhaya.Sihlele ukuthi sihambele izikole ezihlukene kulesifundazwe lapho sizobe sikhuluma nezingane zabafana, nokuthi singazisiza kanjani ukuthuthukisa amakhono azo.”

Young people invited to apply for medical bursaries NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

T

HE Department of Health in KZN is offering bursaries to the needy, and qualifying young people, who want to pursue their studies in various fields of medicine. According to the department’s spokesperson in KZN, Desmond Motha, there are R200 million worth of bursaries that will be offered in 2015. Motha said young people whose applications are welcomed are those who are already at tertiary institutions and studying health related courses. Young people who have passed and qualify to be enrolled at tertiary institutions, but have no funds to further themselves, are invited to apply, he said. He added that all matriculants who have applied at tertiary institutions, been accepted and have proof that they have been accepted are also urged to forward their applications. “Young people must be aware that these bursaries will be offered in pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, oral hygiene, radiography (diagnostic and ultrasound), medicine, psychology(clinical),emergencymedicalcare, medical orthotics and prosthetics, health promotion, optometry, audiology, psychiatry and zoology. “As we are giving 20 bursaries to each of the 11 districts, we look

carefully at what each and every district needs. In Pietermaritzburg, we know that the district is short of dentists. Then it is important for the young people of Pietermaritzburg to apply for a course in dentistry. We encourage applicants to look at those factors,” he said. Applicants must submit proof of application to a tertiary institution and CAO academic record from the university, or Grade 11, with the bursary application form. Applicants must be financially needy. Applications will be considered on a sliding scale in terms of income. All successful candidates will be required to sign a year-for-year work back agreement to serve in their respective district of birth or residence. Supportive certified identity documents of both parents; pay slips; death or divorce certificate and sworn affidavit must be attached, stating the legal guardian or marital status of parents. Bursary application forms can be collected from the human resource office at all government hospitals, clinics and CHC’s. Applicants must sign when receiving and returning the application form to the same institution where the form was obtained. No posted applications will be considered. Applications should be delivered by hand. The closing date for applications is 31 August, 2014.

N line with celebrating 20 years of democracy, for the first time this year 20 honoraries and 20 recipients will receive awards during this year’s KZN Young Achievers Awards taking place at the city hall tomorrow. The awards were established three years ago, in a bid to recognize young people from rural communities who are doing a good job in their communities, but remain unrecognized. The glitz and glamour event, which will start off with a red carpet walk at 6.30pm followed by an awards gala dinner at 7.30pm, is expected to draw a crowd of dignitaries, among which will be IFP leader Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi and former first lady Dr May MashegoMkhize. Speaking at a media briefing last week, Awards Founder Mthobisi Mkhize said: “Since we are celebrating 20 years of democracy, this

became famous on the third season of South African series Big Brother Mzansi. The aim of the series is to award one person with the strongest character among other housemates. People who know nothing about each other live in a house for three months and only one person wins a million. Accordingtoorganiser Makhathini, the couple is coming to Pietermaritzburg for the first time. “They will be taking pictures and selling their t-shirts too. Their public appearances are now a business; they get paid for appearing. They were the famous couple in Big Brother and people loved the drama between them. “I decided to bring them here so that their fans get a chance to meet them and pose with them for pictures. I have met the couple and Lexi is a different person from what people are used to seeing on television. That is the kind of experience people will have when they meet the couple. I urge residents to come out in numbers.” Tickets are R70 pre-event and R100 on the day. The event starts at 6pm and will run until late. Standing up against crime NICOLE JOHN

>>news@myecho.co.za AN average housewife with the desire to keep the community informed about PMB happenings. This describes Shanaaz Bux who began Crime Alert PMB, which operates instantaneously on Blackberry Messenger. Bux, known to her 4 000 or so contacts as the friendly neighbourhood butterfly, broadcasts traffic updates, accident scenes, house break ins and the like, which enables her to keep the community as informed as possible in an effort to fight crime. Bux said that she began to broadcast traffic updates to her neighbours when she went out during the day to her children from school. She said that she would let them know where therewererobotsnotworkingor traffic congestion. It was from those humble beginningsthatCrimeAlertPMB was born and since November 2013, with just a few contacts, Bux now operates two phones with 2 000 contacts on each. Bux has on her contacts list police members, reporters, rescue services, firemen and averagecitizens.Whoeverseesa crime, traffic issue or anything that they feel other citizens should know about, they let Bux know and she broadcasts it to her contact list. Bux has been the ‘first on the scene’ for many criminal activities that have taken place in the city recently, sometimes even beforethepolicebecauseshehas direct contact with the citizens. “We need to work together to help others. Letting each other know what’s going on in the community around us,” she said. Bux said that the community response has been overwhelming. “People have been so impressed with what I’m doing because it’s immediate and so effective.” However Bux said that there have been people who have abused the resource. “I do get people who try to pull pranks on me and the thing is that I cannot verify if what they are telling me is true or not. People need to understand that if they do try to prank me, they are wasting resources,” she said. Bux also said that she works with the municipality task team in an effort to address illegal electricity connections in the city. She urged citizens to report the connections and emphasized the importance of citizens taking photos as proof. “We need to stand together and address crime in the city. We need to let the criminals know that there is someone out there doing something about it. Crime Alert PMB doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to the community and we all need to be a part of it,” said Bux. Bux appeals to anyone who would like to help run Crime Alert PMB to contact her. Her goal is to run Crime Alert PMB in the individual suburbs throughout the city. She is also starting to operate from a third phone.Forupdates, inviteheron 26E92E18.

Cash for waste to tackle filth NALINI NAIDOO THE new National Waste Management Act will see waste having serious monetary value, providing a solution to the country’s litter problem. Mark Gordon, deputy director for chemicals and waste in the Department of Environment Affairs, said the act - in effect since June 2014 - will make it more worthwhile for

people to collect rather than throw away rubbish. According to National Environmental Minister Edna Molewa, recycling has been valued at a contribution of as much as R50 billion to the South African economy. “In effect, waste will now be a renewable resource and not something to throw away,” Molewa said in her recent budget speech. She added that the act provides for a pricing strategy for waste management charges, the establishment of a Waste Management Bureau, and mechanisms to oversee the disbursement of revenue collected from waste management charges. Molewa said soon there will be a deposit-return charge on plastic bottles. “In terms of prioritising waste

streams, we began with plastic bags in 2002 and initiated a national waste tyre plan last year. Going forward, we will prioritise electronic waste, paper and packaging.” The minister said her department will be consulting on the proposed development of regulations that will allow for: • theseparationofwasteatsource; • the banning of plastic waste to landfill sites; • a moratorium on new landfill sites; • a prohibition on the burning of waste; • a regional approach to waste management and disposal. Molewa said there had been an improvement in the provision of waste collection services in the past

five years. “This positive trend will be sustained with more households being provided with waste collection servicestowardsachieving80%basic waste collection services for all households,” she said. Her sentiments were echoed by Co-operative Governance Minister PravinGordhanwhosedepartmentis pursuing “a back-to-basics” theme for municipalities. Gordhan, in his budget speech, said there must be basic services and maintenance such as the cutting of grass, fixing potholes, functioning robots and street lights and “consistent refuse removal.” Wildlands Conservation Trust CEO Andrew Venter welcomed Molewa’s announcement.

Pacsa tackles gender issues NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

M

ARKING men’s month, the Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (Pacsa) on Tuesday hosted a round table debate on issues surrounding male identity, masculinities and violence in South Africa. Director of Pacsa, Daniela Gennrich, said that the aim of the debate was to bring about transformation in matters relating to gender relations. “We were looking at the whole issue of masculinity and violence. We started by looking at our family backgrounds, and how they have influenced us and how we are communicating with our children. “We asked ourselves whether we are still perpetuating the same values. We discovered that there is a huge problem of violence. We tend to look for solutions too quickly, instead of asking ourselves different questions. The whole motive was to find ways in which we can engage more men in bringing about gender justice.” Guest speaker, Professor Ezra Chitando, said that masculinity is a socially constructed idea of who and what a man is and what he should be. “Therearesomanycontroversiessurroundingmale identity. The first one is why we should invest in men who are already advantaged, are we not succumbing to Western cultural imperialism and as much as men are perpetrators of violence, they are also the victims. “In the face of gender-based violence and HIV, we have no choice but to work towards the emergence of men who work towards the full liberation of women, children and fellow men.”

PARENTS can teach their children to be safe cyclists by going out with them and leading by example, said general manager of the Pedal Power Association Karin Pohl. The PPA is the largest cycling organization in South Africa. Cycling can be one way where a child gets enough exercise during the school holidays, and it makes for a good day’s entertainment for the whole family, she said. “Cycling represents fun, freedom and fresh air, everything that’s good about being a child. It is also an easy way to burn calories and to learn co-ordination. Teaching children to travel effectively by bicycle as they get older develops patience, discipline, self-reliance and personal responsibility. Learning to cycle also teaches

Cycling is fun and entertaining to children Other tips when cycling >> You must always wear a helmet. >> You must ride in single file. >> Do not hold onto any other vehicles. >> Don’t swerve from side to side. >> Don’t carry another person or object that prevents you from seeing where you are going, and from having complete control over your bicycle. >> If you are riding on a public road where there is a bicycle lane, use that lane. >> You may ride on any road, expect on a freeway or a road closed to cycling. >> Obey all traffic laws, including stopping at red traffic lights and all stop streets. Proceed through intersections only when it is safe to do so. essential driving skills that will make them safer and more courteous motorists later in life. “Like swimming and motoring, the safety of cycling is determined

primarily by behaviour. Education and skill development is the key to success. An important consideration for cycling with children is matching route selection and adult supervision

to the developmental and skill levels of a child,” said Pohl. Riding with children affords a parent the opportunity to supervise their cycling, especially at edge locations such as street crossings, she said. “Parents should model consistent behaviour by stopping and looking both ways before proceeding, and invite the child to assist in assessment of traffic conditions. When riding with a child to supervise their bicycling, an ideal riding position is slightly behind and to the right of the child. This position allows the parent to watch and communicate with the child, while also diverting overtaking traffictopassatalargerdistancefrom the child,” she said.

City man pursues metal thief from cemetery and has him arrested THAMSANQA MAGUBANE AS the old adage goes, evil thrives when good men do nothing. This must have been what PMB businessman Gary Ayliffe had in mind when he pursued a man who had stolen metal from a cemetery, all the way to the scrap yard where he was planning to dispose of it, and had him arrested. Ayliffe said he was driving along

Chief Albert Luthuli Road when he noticed a man coming out of the cemetery carrying old decorative metal. He said he followed the man and along the route, contacted the police flying squad, who did not respond. Ayliffe said he encountered other police officers who were also not keen on attending to the matter as they were buying food at a convenience store at the time.

WhiledrivingalongChurchStreet, he saw two other police officers and briefly explained the situation to one officerandtookhiscellphonenumber down. Ayliffe said he followed the man towards a scrap metal dealer in Berg Street, phoned the policemen and directed them to where he was. The officers arrived soon after and arrested the man in the scrap yard. “We loaded the steel into my

bakkieandtookittothepolicestation. Oneofthedetectivesthererecognised the man as he had been arrested previously for stealing scrap metal.” Asked what motivated him to go out of his way to follow a thief, Ayliffe said: “I just wanted to do some good, it was my obligation.” Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the 19-year-old man faces a charge of being in possession of stolen property.

Etios crosses over to the wild side C

OMBINING the rugged good looks of an SUV with the fluent drive, fuel efficiency and manoeuvre-ability of a hatch, the new Toyota Etios Cross is ready to write another chapter in this budgetbeater’s success story. Speaking at the launch, Glenn Crompton, vice president of marketing, said: “The Etios delivers exactly what customers want – car-like efficiency and typical crossover styling traits at an affordable price. It marks our entry into yet another category in the diverse and fast growing sub-B segment of the car market.” The Etios Cross allows buyers to tap into the tough image of an SUV without incurring the cost. With the focus firmly on practicality and efficiency, the Cross is userfriendly, while possessing the added robust appeal of a crossover.

The Etios Cross adds the robust appeal of a crossover to the marque.

LikeitsbrothersintheEtiosfamily, the Cross has a 1,5-litre, quad-valve, four-cylinder, 66kW engine pushing out 132Nm of torque and a five-speed manual gearbox.

Key standard features of the Etios range include electric power steering, air conditioning, power windows, a Double Din audio system with USB and AUX ports, ABS, EBD,

Stylish newcomer from Mitsubishi AS part of its expanding footprint in South Africa, Mitsubishi Motors is gearing up for the debut of the all-new Mitsubishi Mirage in August 2014. Poised to take the fight to competitors in the budget- and youth-focused A-segment, this stylish entry-level 5-door Japanese hatchback prides itself on providing fuel efficient, enjoyable motoring coupled with youthful appeal. The mirage range will consist of three models, all with compact proportions hiding a surprisingly spacious vehicle which is an ideal everyday run-around. “Mitsubishi is renowned all over the world as one of Japan’s foremost automotive brands andweareonaresurgenceintheSouthAfrican market,” commented Wynand Pretorius, General Manager at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa. “The Mirage is a fun little car which received an extremely positive response when it was exhibited at last year’s Johannesburg International Motor Show. In these everincreasingly difficult economic times, it makes all the sense in the world to introduce our new supermini, which will be very competitively priced.” The mirage is targeted at a market in which purchase price, fuel efficiency and cost of ownership play vital roles in the decision-making process. All new Mirage derivatives will be powered by Mitsubishi’s 1.2-litre,

3-cylinder MIVEC DOHC petrol engine, mated to a five-speed manual transmission. “The vehicle will easily keep up with the hustle and bustle of busy city streets as well as the open roads so characteristic of South Africa,” explained Pretorius. “The Mirage is also exceptionally fuel efficient thanks to MIVEC – Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control.” Average fuel economy on the combined cycle is just 4.9-litres per 100 km, allowing the Mirage to punch above its weight on the fuel efficiency front. In fact, it is acclaimed as the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid petrol vehicle available in the United States. Impressive too is that the Mirage is fitted with creature comforts like keyless entry and a full complement of safety equipment including ABS, EBD and dual airbags as standard. All this packaged in a funky-looking body designed around Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) impactabsorbing chassis structure. The new Mitsubishi Mirage will be backed by Mitsubishi Motors’s comprehensive 3-year/ 100 000 km warranty. Full details of the range, as well as pricing, will be announced at the vehicle’s launch.

dual front airbags and an immobiliser. In the Cross model, the interior boasts a sleek dashboard with piano-black metallic finishes and

chrome detailing around the air vents. The masculine face of the Etios Cross is a result of the new grille design that extends all the way into the bumpers, mimicking the appearance of bumper overriders. The chunky front bumper is further enhanced by oversized fog lamps with integrated turn indicators and a ribbed front scuff plate. Completing the front end is a revised headlight cluster which blends in with the new grille. Bringing up the rear, the back door gets a stylish garnish strip and a matte black bumper, coupled with prominent “puzzle piece” reverse light lenses. Two new colours are exclusive to the Etios Cross - inferno metallic (a vivid orange) and jet grey metallic.

Don’t make the same mistake

>> “Death warrant” to appoint an overseas coach, says Barker

C

LIVE Barker has warned the South African Football Association (Safa) not to hire a foreign coach again for Bafana Bafana. Barker, who led the SA national team to a 1996 African Cup of Nations victory, stressedthatthecountry’sfootball controlling body should avoid the same mistake of appointing a person who does not understand the SA football culture. The well-travelled Durban born, and current Mpumalanga Black Aces, coach said it would be like Safa signing a “death warrant” if a coach from abroad or outside South Africa borders is signed. “I am still saying our local coaches, I mean SA born mentors, are the best. Look at Shakes Mashaba when he was a senior national coach. His record was outstanding and is still the best until now. “Other local coaches like Gavin Hunt, Gordon Igesund and Pitso Mosimane are still the best,”said Barker. Barker said it must be remembered that all the coachesthatcamefromabroadtocoachtheSAsenior national team have not produced the required results. “Honestly, all of them have failed and we must not think about them again. The likes of Carlos Queiroz, Carlos Alberto Parreira, Phillip Troussier and Joel Santana all failed and it was the biggest mistake to bring them on board,” he explained. Safa was supposed to name the new coach to replace current coach Gordon Igesund this weekend, but the announcement has been postponed and no new date has been given. Safa President Danny Jordaan said it was up to the executive committee of Safa when to choose the new coach. Coaches likely to make the final cut are Mashaba, StephenKeshifromNigeriaandFrankRijkaardfromthe Netherlands. - Jerry Barnes PHOTO: GALLO IMAGES

Former Bafana Bafana and current Mpumalanga Black Aces coach Clive Barker when he was still mentoring AmaZulu FC.

Inefficiency and laziness THE more things change the more they remain the same. The poor have no future in our country. It is interesting to note that over the past 20 years, football in this town has lost more facilities. A few football training and playing fieldsinAlexandraParkhavebeengiventoelite sports like biking. Many years of oppression have made the poor docile, and those in power are taking full advantage of this situation. It has also been interesting to note developments and interests of municipalities offering monies to professional clubs, while poor kids in the townships have no facilities and equipment. We just wonder what happened to the slogans: doors of learning will open for all. It seems our affluent status has made us blind to the needs of the poor township folk. It hurts to see grassroots football dying in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas. We have not been promoting any clubs to provincial and national leagues for some time. It hurts to see a situation where interests of officials come before those of players. Our inefficiency and laziness is destroying the future of the youth. Our district football association needs to wake up and smell the coffee. It is unacceptable that administrative

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA blunders affect footballers. How can a team from Sisonke district do better than UMgungundlovu teams? This cannot be allowed to happen in a town that has produced more national teams’ footballers than any in KwaZulu-Natal. Do people understand the dangers of subjecting players to two matches every weekend? What about the implications of not going throughpre-seasontrainingbecauseofadministrative blunders? Please let us put the interest of the players first. Bafana Bafana success will remain a pipe dream as long as those in power neglect the grassroots. I think the Municipality also need to have a political will. It is sad that our generation enjoyed better football facilities during apartheid years. Why the new order is failing to service the present footballers better boggles the mind. History will judge us harshly if we do not change. Unzima Lomthwalo!

>> The two teams will lock horns in the annual Carling Black Label oneday tournament starting line-up. Also, two lucky spectators will be offered the opportunity of sitting on the bench and coaching their different teams. “It sounds crazy but both teams will have a coach of the day. This is really about honouring our fans and letting them be in charge for the day,” said Modisane. Modisane said that the tournament is always a full house and a mouth watering event. He strongly shot down claims of the event being a joke. Pirates votes indicate that the fans are interested in attacking football. They have shown faith in the likes of former Chiefs striker Majoro, Daine Klate, Kermit Erasmus, Tlou Segolela, Oupa Manyisa, Sifiso Myeni and their evergreen goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

S they say, when two bulls clash, the turf suffers. Such is expected to be the case when Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs lock horns in the annual Carling Black Label one-day tournament at FNB stadium on Saturday. THE Safa Second Division/ABC Motsepe League National playoffs officially kicked off this week on Tuesday in venues around Durban, despite a couple of outstanding questions. The local team, Hammarsdale Kings United, were officially taken as overall winners of KwaZuluNatal, but another side, Natal United (Greytown), is also claiming to be the champions. Fixtures on both sides were cancelled on the first day. Their matter sat before Safa DC which Kings lost, but they have taken the case to arbitration. “This matter is not easy at all and it’s far from over,” said an insider. According to sources, Kings are alleged to have used a player not properly registered. Safa head of communications, Dominic Chimhavi, confirmed the matter. “Yes, there’s a small issue between the two teams but it will be soon sorted.” Nine teams will battle it out for promotion to the National First Division (NFD), South Africa’s second tier division. The teams are divided into two groups Group A with five teams while four teams make up Group B. The Group winners will automatically be promoted to the National First Division (NFD), South African soccer’s second tier. The overall winners will walk away with a whopping R1 million, while the runnersup will re ceive R500000.ThefinalwillbestagedonSunday and the winners will be crowned overall Safa Second Division champions for 2014.
