BLUNDER costs pupil exams’

>> Fundokuhle exprincipal blamed for pupil missing matric exams

W

HILE other pupils are sharpening themselves for theirmatricexaminations, an 18 year old orphan from Fundokuhle secondary school Imbali Unit 2 will not be part of the 2013 matric sittings. The pupil (whose name is known to Echo) was not registered with the examinations department early this year and it’s the deputy principal’s fault, according to the three school teachers. Speaking to Echo on Tuesday, his teachers said that he was not aware of the news yet since they have not told him and they were planning to tell him yesterday. According to these teachers it was the deputy principal’s (who was the principal at the time) fault that the pupil was not registered in time. One of the teachers said that there was a quarter where the boy

could not attend school because he was sick while in grade 11. When his year-end marks were counted he was counted on a four quarter basis which he was not suppose to, he said. “The mistake was spotted and he was then counted on a three quarter which allowed him to pass to grade 12. The deputy principal who was theprincipallastyearbeforeshewas being demoted is the one responsible for the problem we are facing at the moment. “When all grade 12 pupils were registered with the examnations department she did not fill in nor submittedtheboy’sdocuments.Iwasinformed by his class teacher about that. “Three of us went to the exam departmentandspokewiththedepartments officials. They promised that they would rectify the mistake as we produced all the necessary documents. We told the boy that the department had promised that he will write his exams.

“We were hoping that they were going to attend to it as they had promised,” said the teacher. Another teacher added that weeks ago it transpired that the boy is not registered and that he will not write his final exams. “We have not told him the bad news. He is such an active pupil who is involved with most of the school activities.Hehasnoclueandit’ssuch a heavy load on us to break such bad news to him,” said the teacher. While the accused deputy principal, Ziningi Hina said she had nothing to say on the matter, the principal, Mlungisi Maphumulo, said the Department of Education’s protocol does not allow him to speak to the media. KZN Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said the school must go to the district examinations department and speak to the district manager. “The department will see on how theycansortoutthematteradministratively,” he said.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan yesterday presented the mini budget which would stimulate economic growth but also encourage fiscal discipline, ac cording to President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday, allaying investor fears of increased government spending ahead of an election next year. The interim budget, is expected to keep a rein on spending but widen his deficit fore cast for 2013/14 to 4.9% of gross domestic product from the 4.% seen in February, a Reuters poll of 15 economists found. Sluggish efforts to bounce back from a 2009 recession have constrained revenue collection, and Gord han has consistently had to push out the timeline for narrowing the deficit. – Fin24

Burger Street has become one of the many streets where street children and general beg gars ply their begging trade.

T

HE number of children known as street children and beggars in the streets of Pietermaritzburg is rising thick and fast and

they see begging as a day job. HesomstreetandthecornerofLangalibalele and Boshoff streets are known to be the major begging spots for these children and beggars. They sniff glue and ask for money and food from motorists and people passing by. Lately

these children have become more visible in some parts of Burger Street, upper of Langalibalele and some parts of Scottsville. In Burger Street, Echo spoke to a 12 year-old boy (whose name is known to Echo) who said he lives in France Phase 1. There were three of them but the other two were fast asleep on the side of the road with empty containers of used glue. The 12 year old boy said he started begging early this year. He said he had to live with his unemployed aunt after his mother passed on last year. “I don’t sleep in the streets, I come here in the morning and go back home every afternoon. We are three boys and all do the same thing. Every afternoon we go back home. “Others stay in Haniville and I’m the only one from the France area,” he said. Asked why he was not at school, he said he dropped out from school last year. “I was in grade five when I dropped out from school. My aunt is not working and I use

to go to school hungry. I quit and joined others on the street so that I could try and get food for myself. “Begging and sniffing glue all day is not exitingbutI’musedtoit.Iwouldlovetoliveanormal life like other boys of my age,” he said. The 12 year old was hesitant to give a clear answer about whether he would go back to school if he was given an opportunity. KwaZulu-Natal Social Development media liaison officer Ncumisa Fandesi said that the department has taken an initiative about this. “The initiative is to coordinate and facilitate the development of a provincial integrated actionplanfortheeffectiveandefficientrendering of services to children living and working in the street. We have standardised programmes that are implemented with children living and working in the streets. “Detailsregardingtheseprogrammeswillbe launched by [Social Development] MEC Weziwe Thusi in partnership with relevant stakeholders, including civil society and business sector this month,” said Fandesi. Msunduzi municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said the municipality has always maintained that the issue of street children is a matter that requires a collective effort from relevant stakeholders. “Simply removing them without proper places to take them to, and proper programmes to rehabilitate them and eventually re-unite them with their families, will be a futile exercise, he said.

IETERMARITZBURG street vendors in an umbrella selling business have made a killing as it was raining cats and dogs in the province since last Thursday. Peoplewereseenflockingtotheirtablesbeside the streets of the city to buy the umbrellas for protection from the heavy rains. Speaking to Echo, Dumisani Ngidi said he was pleased with the profit he made yesterday (Thursday) when he sold 36 umbrellas as it was raining almost the whole day. He said his umbrellas cost R20 each, which translates into R720 for selling 36 umbrellas. He said as most people wished that there were indoors due to cold and rainy weather, he is out on the street making money. “I benefit from both of the items that I’m selling. I sell shoes and umbrellas and both these items work for me. If it’s hot people buy the sandals that I’m selling because they are comfortable in summer. “They can be worn when it’s hot and they are comfortable. With the umbrellas, again I makeremarkableprofitwhenit’sraining.People buy umbrellas when it’s raining and they prefer the smaller ones. “I sell the smaller sizes because they are portable and they can easily fit in a handbag. I’m aware that people prefer bright colours as well. People love bright colours, especially my young women customers. I can proudly say that business is good,” said Ngidi. Vincent Malwane also sells umbrellas in Church Street as Ngidi is. But stationed at the top of Church Street just opposite Clicks store. He said he always count the cash he has made with a smile after working on a rainy day. “If it’s raining I sell close to 20 umbrellas which cost R25 each. My customers are not happy with the R25 price so I end up selling at R20. Rainy days work for us in an umbrella business but December month is always a guarantee of good profit,” he said.

KZN premier Senzo Mchunu and provincial Health MEC Dr. Sbongiseni Dhlomo have a chat at the provincial consultative health forum held at Royal Showgrounds on Tuesday. Addressing the forum Mchunu praised health professionals for putting into action his govern ment’s policy of providing quality healthcare for all citi zens in this province. He, however, also challenged all civil service employees to render quality service to com munities that will make the financial investment by government worthwhile.

Why is UKZN treating the isiZulu with contempt?

O

NE of the sick jokes which I grew up hearing was about a certain guy who got a Ph.D in isiZulu. And this guy was graduating. So various people were enjoying his graduation party and one of the learned gentlemen who had attended the party asked: “What was your Ph. D. on?” “Zulu, Zulu language…” he responded. “Hmn, esiZulwini pho?” (meaning, ‘obviously, it’s nothing to be proud of.’ Well, yes, I grew up amongst people who held this view. But I did not share the sentiment. When I think of the amount of beautiful literature I have cherished with my intelligent friendsthathasbeenwrittenbyisiZulu writers – I am talking about short stories, novels, plays, poetry, prose, grammar books, religious books – I see nothing inferior about isiZulu. So it was rather disturbing to note the recent developments at the University of KwaZulu-Natal with regards to their new policy on isiZulu. How can the university say isiZulu will be compulsory to all during the

firstyearandthenitwillnotbeoffered at any other higher level? This is absurd. It is like the typical South African practice of appointing a black manager in a private company just so that he or she will be a black face in a pool of white-dominated management. We call it window-dressing in our rainbow nation culture, don’t we? It feels like the university is doing the same sort of thing with my language. They are pretending as if it is such an important language – one that everyone must learn during the first SIMPHIWE year. But only for one year, okay, just for one year. I wonder what type of arrogance propels one to disrespect the Zulus in this fashion in their land of birth. The isiZulu speakers are considered to be amongst the largest tribes in the African continent. They are a proud peo-

ple that are a victorious part of the broader Nguni tribes. The Zulus are respected for being the first colonised people to defeat a British army, albeit temporarily. History tells us that the Zulus were the last tribe in southern Africa to succumb to Western culture, including the white man’s education and his religion, not so much because they were stupid, butrather because they did not see the need to renounce their culture and way of life since they were satisfied and happy with their clan heads and king. History tells MKHIZE us that the Zulus annoyed the BritishEmpirewhentheirChristianBishop (Colenso), became an English-Zulu as he adopted black culture, drank African brew and married black women. Hence that Bishop was to be honoured by having one of the country’s

oldest townships named after him (Sobantu). The Zulus have given a name to the most popular liberation struggle armed wing in the continent, known as Umkhonto weSizwe (meaning the spear of the nation), in honour of King Shaka Zulu, the legendary military strategist. As though that is not enough, the longest-serving intelligence head of theANCinexilewasaZululeaderwho now happens to be the president of the country – it is none other than Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma himself. The Zulus are the only tribe that has a highly patronised, visible and culturally relevant king – probably more relevant than the well-financed andpopularBritishmonarch.Iwasin awe when one traditional healer was on Ukhozi FM demanding that an international celebration be staged to honour King Shaka. Despite the fact that nothing came out of that clarion call, it intrigued me to hear the traditional healer say King Shaka wants to be recognised internationally because his people and their language are all over the world. I marveled when Mbongeni Nge-

ma’s Sarafina musical enforced my belief that Zulu dance is a world-class performance.Westerndanceisnosuperior to Zulu dance, and so is the language of the two nations. Is the UKZN reinforcing the belief that foreign languages are more important than the language of the indigenous people? There is something arrogant about undermining the significance of the isiZulu language in the land of the Zulus. But again it is common to see the Zulu people treated with disrespect in South Africa. It is common to see a TV dramaseriesdepictingZulusasbackward, farm-boys, stupid or something like that. I am sure the history of the so-called “black-on-black” violence that was driven from KZN did not help our reputation as so-called mindless stoogies. There is only one thing I can say to the UKZN management: I do not think that showing disrespect to others has desirable outcomes. The decision to treat Zulu language in this manner offends some of us. *Simphiwe MKhize writes in his personal capacity.

Allan further said that the album is al so about his life experiences as a South African citizen. “It is about paying trib ute to the country’s inspirational wom en, the marginalised women from rural communities whose heroic actions are poems,” he said.

The NCC Development Race, uniquely, finishes with a portage. “I think it is a nice little tester to see how thecombinationisgoingtogetherand how we are feeling and what we need to work on, so I think it is a good idea to end with a portage, and it’s actually quite a hard portage as well,” said Birkett. “The focus is Dusi, not every race before it, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be racing at 100 percent every race,” he added. “But we can’t lose focus on what the end-goal is. So it is important to use all these races as training and good prep before Dusi.” Assessing the pair as a combination,Birkettcontinued:‘Webothhave

THE first seeding race for the 2014 DusiCanoeMarathon, theNCCDevelopment Race, takes place on Sunday. It will mark the first time that NonStop Dusi champions, Andy Birkett and Sbonelo Zondi, team up this season. They will be the hot favourites to take a major share of the prize purse of R32 000 provided by the title sponsors, the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation. The pair dominated the opening day of the last year’s Dusi in K1s, but Birkett saw his hopes of victory disintegrate on day two when he suffered rudder damage, while a late swim on day three saw Zondi lose his lead and the race victory. Together for the Non-Stop Dusi, they performed superbly, shattering the race record by an incredible 17 minutes to win by 36-and-a-half minutes over the second placed team of Loveday Zondi and Siseko Ntondini. The duo is viewed by many as the
