Offices deliberately set on fire, says DA

THAMSANQA MAGUBANE THE Democratic Alliance offices in the provincial legislature were deliberately burnt down, the party said in a statement this week. “Preliminary forensic investigation into last week’s fire, which gutted most of our Pietermaritzburg parliamentary office, suggeststhatthiscouldbeanactofarson,” said the statement. “Atthisstage, thereareindicationsthat the fire was started by a person or persons.

We have also been advised that there was an attempt to damage our information storage units including computers and printing machines,” it continued. However, the police, one of the authori ties investigating, said they had not determined the cause of the fire. The party leaders refused to divulge the source that declared the preliminary findings. DAprovincialleaderSizweMchunusaid they would not reveal the source. “There are a number of investigations that are currently happening … We will not

be revealing the source of this preliminary investigation.” He said: “There were clear attempts to move our information centres … they had been moved from their original positions.” Another MP George Mari said it is their belief that the fire could not have just started on its own. “We find it suspicious that our offices were burnt down after we opposed the building of a new premises … We believed there are more pressing matters that needed to be attended to.”

He said the R500 million that had been earmarked for the building of the new parliament precinct could be better used elsewhere. The party statement added: “We will also further engage with KZN’s Communi ty Safety and Liaison MEC to assist us in bringing this matter to its satisfactory completion. We are determined to get to the bottom of this matter.” Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the cause of fire is unknown at this stage.

Security concerns at UKZN NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

SSUES surrounding safety at UKZN’s PMB campus have triggered security guards to ask for car keys from motorists parking at the visitors parking. This follows a recent car theft incident on campus. Security guards at the gate said that although they cannot confirm the number of vehicles that have been stolen this year, culprits are connecting wires to start the cars and they then drive off. As a result, cones have been put up at the exit area so that all motorists can be screened before driving out. A security guard who did not want to be identified said: “We recently received an instruction to check all motorists. All we want to see are the

Motorists park at their own risk and it is important that they ensure that their cars are locked and that there is nothing flashy displayed which can make the vehicle an easy target,” she said. Vehicle concerns come amid other safety concerns, such as the

recent alleged rape of a female student on campus and the protest by students over an alleged fee hike for next year. Student Representative Council (SRC) president Lungani Nhlenyama said that although he has not received reports of the latest incidents, car

theft is rife, particularly in the Golf Road area. “Although Risk Managament Services (RMS) are doing their best to protect us, there is an issue of safety around campus. We have boom gates and turnstiles where students have to swipeinandoutinordertogainentry. However most of these gates are old, and don’t always work which makes it easier for intruders to gain entry. Following the alleged rape recently, students had signed a petition that all the boom gates be closed and only people with student cards could gain entry. However it was inconvenient, especially for disabled students. “Theft is on the rise, particularly when it comes to laptops and cellphones. While we feel that the university should beef up its security system, students are partly responsi-

ble for what is happening. We often advise female students to request RMS to accompany them when walking at night, but then you often find them walking alone. We have raised our safety concerns with management, and they have promised to come up with intervention strategies by the end of next week.” Executive director of corporate relations at UKZN, Lesiba Seshoka, said that they have records of only three cars that were stolen in university’ surroundings this year, but not on campus “We have intensified security patrols on campus, increased the number of security personnel and have also enforced more stringent controls at access points, We are also looking to install additional security measures.”

Government departments owe Msunduzi more than R122 million NQOBILE MTOLO

>>news@myecho.co.za THE current government arrear debt is sitting at more than R122 million, said Municipal Public Accounts Committee (Mpac) chairperson Mike Tarr. Tarr said that the main obstacle is that there is no clarity on the ownership of government property. “Currently, the government arrear debt is more than that [R122 million]. The big problem with government debt to this day, 20 years after the new South Africa, is that government properties, according to the constitution, should be registered against the departments that will use them. If it is the national department, they should be endorsed on the title deeds. It should not be too hard to

do that. If you are really curious to see who is in the building, just cut the lights off and see who comes running first,” said Tarr. Mpac member Naleni Atwaru said that should Mpac not resolve the government debt, they will be falling short on their duties. “The biggest challenge as Mpac is that I am of the opinion that we were under review when we went under administration. The first committee that they will come down on will be Mpac because we were put in place as a turnaround strategy from the administration period,” said Atwaru. According to Msunduzi municipal records, the KZN Department of Public Works, National Department of Public Works, Umgeni and the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional

Affairs (Cogta) owe Msunduzi Municipality R46 065 558.74, R36 454 763, R7 789 568.40 and R1 539 123.12 respectively. The total schools debt is R12 582 849 and there is now intervention from the department of education. “We have raised this issue at this committee on quite a number of occasions and I am concerned

that we seem to be slacking. It is a bad reflection on the municipality because we come down so hard on the residents,” said Atwaru. Msunduzi’s process manager for income, Sifiso Khoza, said that already the provincial treasury department is putting pressure on departments to pay the municipality.

Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) Private Hospital participated in Pharmacy Week which is an awareness campaign celebrated nationally from 1 to 8 September. MidMedic Pharmacy (the institutional pharmacy of the Hospital) celebrated by hosting a number of events, including presentations for staff and patients on antibi otics. The week also featured a fun day with a clown at MMC’s Paediatric Ward, bringing cheer to children in the ward. MidMedic Pharmacy also hosted blood pressure and blood glucose testing for staff and the general public. This year’s theme is ‘Use Antibiotics Wisely’. Pictured putting a smile on the face on two little patients, were (from left to right) Nozipho Maka thini (Richmond resident), Nonhlanhla Shelembe (Imba li resident), Jeremy Bartle (R clown), Junaid Essa (L pharmacy manager at MMC) with paediatric patients (front) eight year old Luyanda Zondi (L) and six year old Nomonde Shelembe.

A lack of control of the Msundu zi Municipali ty’s forestry operations is resulting in massive tim ber theft. feel like. The biggest theft is also done by the contractors who take the timber out because they load the lorry and no one weighs it. No one controls what trucks come in and out of there and I suspect there is a huge problem,” he said. Mpac member ward 24 councillor Philani Ngidi said that the stolen

timber is used to build illegal shacks on municipal land. “It is a concern, especially with recent incidents that we have witnessed in ward 32 and 31. As a result of us not attending to this issue, forestry shacks are starting to mushroom everywhere. People use the very same timber from our forest

to build their illegal structures. It is highly important that action is indeed taken in controlling this,” said Ngidi. The worrying factors for the Mpac members were the internal audit findings for the municipal forest which were concluded from 1 July, 2012 to 31 October, 2013. Some of the findings include the non-functioning of the forestry board of directors, inadequate repairs and maintenance of plantation roads, no measures are taken to weigh timber stock after harvesting and upon dispatch to market, a lack of a review agreement between NCT and the Msunduzi Municipality, losses incurred by the municipal, forestry and the incomplete verification of municipal assets. Tarr requested a detailed report to be submitted to find out how these challenges are being met.

PIETERMARITZBURG toddler’s life is on the line if he doesn’t go for a crucial but costly stem cell transplant. WayneRowe, fromImbali, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a dangerousraretypeofcancerthat occurs in infants and young children, last year. Since then, he has been spending most of his time in and out of hospitals. ThisyearinJuly,Waynehadan operation where his tumours were surgically removed in Durban’s Parklands Hospital. He is currently undergoing a five-day aggressive chemotherapy treatment that uses chemical substances as part of a standardised chemotherapy regimen. Now, he is set for a stem cell transplant operation between September and October in Johannesburg. His mother, Chantel Rowe, said the situation is traumatic. “The doctor said if he doesn’t go for the operation, there’s only a 30% chance he could survive. We are appealing for urgent assistance,” said an emotional Rowe. “His immune system is very low. He gets nauseous and he is not eating properly and picks up

infections easily. Seeing him going through the pain is heartbreaking.” He has had his port removed and has a visible scar on his chest. Rowe, originally from Ixopo, said since June she has only been at work for about two weeks. “Most of the time I have to skip work because I have to be with him in hospital. We are in a difficult and stressful situation. The doctor gave me sleeping pills because he said I’m under a lot of pressure.” Paediatric oncologist, Dr Monica Vaithilingum said Wayne will use his own stem cell and the transplant was the only hope. “He is in the last stage he could get to. The aim is to get him a stem cell transplant which is a serious procedure,” said Vaithilingum. “We make his bone marrow produce extra stem cells, take them out of his blood then store them separately. Then we give him chemotherapy before wiping his bone marrow out and putting his stem cells back into him.” “He is a strong survivor. He doesn’t have friends because he’s always in hospital. He plays by himself and he enjoys playing with toys as they make him happy,” said Rowe.

USUKE umthwalo kubazali bezingane ezingama-50 zesikole samabanga aphezulu uMbambangalo saseMaqongqo njengoba ibandla iLife Bible lixhase labafundi ngemifaniswano. Leli bandla elingaphansi kukaMfundisi Sabelo Manyathi linikela ngomfaniswano ukuze laba bafundi abaswele bakwazi ukuyisebenzisa ngonyaka ozayo. Akusona kuphela lesi sikole esihlomulile njengoba kuphinde kwahlomula nesikole samabanga aphezulu iNyonithwele ngoxhaso oluvela kulo lelibandla oluzosiza ukuthi sikwazi ukuhlangabezana nezinye zezidingo zalesi sikole. UthishanhlokowaseNyonithwele uMnuz Themba Hlongwane wakhala ngokuthi lesi sikole

Isonto iLife Bible lixhase izikole

siwelwa uphahla lokho okwenza kube nzima kulesisikole. UHlongwane wakusho lokhu ngenyanga edlule lapho uNgqongqoshe woMnyango wezeMfundo ephakeme uDkt Blade Nzimande evakashele lesi sikole ezovula isikhungo sama khompuyutha. UManyathi uthe yena nebandla lakhe bakubona kubalulekile ukuthi babasize abantwana abasuke

bedinga usizo ngoba uyakholelwa ukuthi imfundo ibaluleke kakhulu. Uqhube wathi emakhaya abantwana kunezinkinga ezahlukene ezikhungetha abazali kanti lokho yikho okumenza ukuthi elule isandla yena kanye nebandla ukusiza abantwana. “Isikole samabanga aphezulu uMbambangalo yisikole ebesengisijwayele kakhulu ngokusivakashela ngiyoluleka abantwana bakhona

ngezinto eziningi. Ngithe ngokujwayela kwami ukuya khona ngabona ukuthi kunabantwana abaphila ngaphansi kwezimo ezingezihle futhi abaswele. “Kulapho-ke sibone kukuhle ukuthi singenelele njengebandla silule isandla sisize lapho singasiza khona. “Sibe sesicela esikoleni ukuthi basinike abantwana abangama-50 abaswele kakhulu ukuze sizokwazi

ukuthi sibasize ukubathengela umfaniswano,” kusho uManyathi. Uthe babonile ukuthi abantwana abanye abasenabo abazali kanti abanye bahlala nabazali abangabodwana. “Kuyinto ebalulekile ukuthi sitshale ebantwaneni ngoba bangabaholi bakusasa. Imfundo ibaluleke kakhulu nathi futhi njengesonto siyakholelwa ukuthi imfundo iyisikhali sokunqoba. “Labantwanabangomamanobaba bakusasa abazohola isizwe. Ngakho ukutshala kubona akukona ukulahla kodwa ukwakha isizwe. Ngonyaka ozayo abazali balabantwana ngeke baze bahlupheke ngokuthengela abantwana umfaniswano. “Bonke laba ntwana bazothengelwa umfaniswano, siyawethula lowo mthwalo kubazali,” kuqhuba uManyathi.

GLN speaks through drama

THEGayandLesbianNetwork(GLN), in collaboration with The Rainbow Theatre Group, launched its School Project recently. GLN, through dramatic performances, explores issues in Pietermaritzburg schools such as hate crimes, homophobia, prejudice, discrimination, stereotypes, bullying and peer pressure. The Schools Project is funded by

the Embassy of Finland and targets life orientation teachers, pupils and management at schools. It aims to combat hate crimes, homophobia and bullying and to work closely with teachers to ensure that they are able to approach these issues with pupils who are victims. Using drama as a means of exploring these issues, GLN uses strategies of forum theatre, which

enables the audience watching the performance to get involved and to present them with challenges that they face and how these challenges can be solved. The forum theatre was adopted by GLN in order to create awareness of LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersexed) issues through creative strategies. “The performance by the drama

group was excellent and they were abletoconveythemessageofbullying in a creative and safe way that allowed pupils to participate in the performance,” said GLN director, Anthony Waldhausen. Under the theme of “People Live Here … 20 Years into Democracy”, the annual Pacsa Film and Arts festival is set to showcase a stimulating and highly topical range of films, art, poetry, music and debates that celebrate the lives and power of ordinary South Africans. Safa Mgungundlovu president Eric ‘Silver Fox’ Mtshatsha (L) awards the coach/manager of the year, Alfred “Skhweqe” Ngcongo, of Central United Brothers at the Safa Mgungundlovu awards ceremony on Saturday.

HE local district football governing body has pleaded with the Msunduzi Municipality to take local football more seriously and build more playing grounds. Last Saturday, Safa uMgungund lovu held its annual awards ceremony attheGoldenHorseandtwoinfluential speakers appealed to the local municipality to help with the development of local football by providing more sportsfields, for soccer in particular. Safa provincial executive commit tee chairman, Velaphi Kubheka, observed that not even one official from local government attended the function in order to try to understand the unhappiness stemming from a lack of facilities among club owners, associations and players. Kubheka described this as disappointing and urged Safa uMgungundlovu to keep on pressurising the municipality to deliver, saying it is their duty to do so. “Don’t feel sorry for yourself or be scared to ask the Msunduzi Municipality to build soccer fields around the city. You are not begging them, you are telling them to do their duties. By building grounds, they are following through with service delivery. Let us all get it right and understand it properly. It is not a favour from them but it’s written in the Freedom Charter and it’s your democratic right. Don’t be apologetic about it, the buck stops with your local government,” stressed Kubheka. REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA

THE present South African political, social and economic situation resembles the period of apartheid. Patronage and access to resources has converted many of us into stooges. Fear to be sidelined and deprived of economic benefits is crippling our beautiful country. People are scared of speaking the truth. We live in a period of ‘stomach’ politics. We need to change if history is to judge us favourable. During the apartheid period, the majority of peoplewereafraidtospeakagainstthe system. There are lots of wrong things in our game yet because of patronage, respectable men are scared of dealing with issues. People are afraid that they willnotbeinvitedtothemaintable. We seem to be more concerned with material benefits than the progress of our nation. Individual interests have

national level, Safa Mgungundlovu president Eric “Silver Fox” Mtshatsha, remarked that his organisation’s wings have been clipped and the chances of bringing national tournaments to the city are nil. “Many years ago, we hosted nationaleventssuchastheUnder17/19 and Vodacom 2nd Division playoffs because we had a couple of playing grounds around Harry Gwala Stadium and we were able to do it. But all those grounds are no longer there and it is impossible to bring any event to the city,” said Mtshatsha. He also said that it was heartbreaking that nobody seems to understand that having less grounds was crippling the development of local soccer. “At the moment, there is no place for clubs to train, let alone to play weekend fixtures. This is a big problem in local soccer and we just hope the Msunduzi Municipality will hear our cry.” During the function, top awards were scooped by players, coaches, officials and clubs. Central United Brothers FC owner and coach, Alfred “Skhweqe” Ngcongo, took the coach of the year award. The referee of the season was Mhato Tsiyamu, player of the season went to Sibonelo Dlamuka and team of the season was claimed by Richmond Leicester City. “Thisteamwasthebestexampleto all of us. They were not only the best in the field of play, they were able to stay away from unruly behaviour and stayed disciplined all the way,” said Mtshatsha. Jerry Barnes.

become more important than those of the masses. Officials’ interests are more important than those of the players. Black youth in particular have become a political ball. Leaders fight each other using young people for their own political ends. It is just tragic that people do not see the importance of working for common goals. Football needs everyone in this country. The game was played before the present generation of leaders. It will still be there long after we are dead. Safa and PSL leadership must look at a bigger picture than narrow personal interests. There is no individual that is indispensable in football. The streets and prisons are teeming with black youth in particular. They lack facilities and opportunities to belong to sports clubs. We use words like mass participation yet nothing is being done to accommodate young boys and girls. Football is not PSL or national teams. My view is that even most politicians in this country think football is a match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Lastly, it is important for our youth in this district to have bigger dreams. You have been born in a period when football is not just about Sundowns, Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs. Maritzburg United will be tricky for Chiefs >> Although Amakhosi are the team to watch, it does not mean that they are unbeatable

Kaizer Chiefs officials Jessica (L) and Bobby Motaung celebrate after their club won the MTN 8 Final match between themselves and Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday.

ARITZBURG United are this weekend expected to be a handful for one of the best teams in the country - Kaizer

Chiefs. Last weekend, Amakhosi managed to edge outtheirtraditional-archrivalsOrlandoPirates 1-0 in Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium during the MTN8 final. By winning the Wafa Wafa Cup, Amakhosi pocketed R8 million. The questions endlessly asked these days is whether Amakhosi are now done with their celebrations and are in the right frame of mind to outsmart the Team of Choice on Saturday night at FNB Stadium. The stand-in Amakhosi captain, Tefu Mashamaite, who dashed Pirates hopes when he headed home the only goal in the match, said that the festive mood in the camp was now a thing of the past and players are ready to fight on. The former Bidvest Wits skipper says his head coach, Stuart Baxter, made it clear to

THE annual Ward 34 Community Sports Day/Festival is scheduled for September 27 at Eastwood Sports Grounds, behind Eastwood Civic Centre from 8am. The event is also open to other neighbouring wards. Organiser and founder of the event, Jerry Barnes, told Echo this week that the event will be dedicated to late ward 34 councillor Wally Adams who died on the same date. “This is our small way of saying long live the spirit of Comrade Wally Adams. We are trying to instill the culture of playing sports. I personally believe a playing community is capable of staying away from crime,” said Barnes. The event’s proceedings will start with a 3,5km fun run/walk which will start in front of Adams house at 6 Hyacinth Place. A handful of Adams friends, colleagues, comrades, family, church leaders, neighbours and community members are expected to take part in the run/walk. Ward34ANCbranchchairperson,and Adams’ widow Ivy Terry-Adams, said she will walk with other comrades and community members to honour her late husband. “I invite everyone to come join us and remember Wally in a great way,” said Terry-Adams. The main guest speaker will be Msunduzi Municipality Mayor Chris Ndlela. Other speakers will be Mzo Nxumalo from the SAPS Organised Crime Unit, Busi Nkomo from the Department of Sports and Recreation, former Kaizer Chiefs/African Wanderers goalkeeper Arthur Baartman and Ward 34 Councillor Eunice Majola. Aside from the normal soccer matches that are expected to dominate the day, the PMB Bikers Club will also be part of the day. Also for the first time, senior citizens will take part in the event and popular indigenous games such as inqathu, umlabalaba and amagenda. Teams, officials, volunteers, referees and sporting friends members interested in taking part in the event are to meet at the Eastwood War room on Friday, September 19 at 4pm. Registrations will be also be done on the day of the event. Community members interested in putting up stalls can contact Barnes at 083 521 9553 or at jerryb.barnes228@gmail.com

usual at Naturena,” said Mashamaite. Team of Choice spokesman, Brian “BZ” Zuma, agrees that Chiefs are on song and difficult customers these days, but “somebody needs to teach them a lesson.” “They are recent MTN8 Champions but somebody out there must bring them down to earth and we are capable of doing that,”said Zuma. Zuma insisted that although Amakhosi are the team to watch nowadays, it does not mean that they are unbeatable.
