Crack down on criminals

URING a successful integrated crime prevention operation in the Pietermaritzburg Cluster on Saturday, over 100 arrests were made. The operation was held by three police stations - Mountain Rise, Pietermaritzburg and Alexandra Road - and was conducted under the command of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni and acting Pietermaritzburg Cluster Commander, Brigadier Francis Bantham. During the briefing of 240 police members, Bantham said that it is time to get serious about addressing crime in the city. FTER being in business for 34 years and dedicating his life towards helping the needy, PMB businessman Themba Njilo was on Saturday honoured with a philanthropist award during the Future Leaders Youth Awards at the Olive Convention Centre. The awards, which have been in existence for the past two years, were founded by Zanele Mbokazi Nkambule, in a bid to salute those young people who are doing extra ordinary things in different sectors, but are unrecognized. “I was chosen by young people as a businessman who is able to uplift

them. I feel honoured that they appreciate the little that I do for them. It comes from my heart as I do not want to see people suffering. These are our future leaders and as elders, we have a duty to mentor and uplift them. I am motivated to do more. “If not guided, our young people often go astray, and I am planning a huge conference with all the young people from the province to find out what their dreams are, and how I can be used tofulfillsomeofthem,”said Njilo.

Njilo, who has more than 10 awards to his name mostly for his humanitarian efforts, challenged other businessman. “When God blesses you with something, he does so in order for you to be a blessing to others. The government alone cannot reach every needy person and as businessmen, we also have to help where we can.” Future Leaders spokesperson Wendy Sithole said: “We are redefining positive role models. The philanthropist award is given to someone who gives or donates resources and time to the youth without expecting anything. “It is someone who gives selflessly and consistently to see the dreams of young people come to fruition.”

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma delivered the State Of the Nation address (SONA) on Tuesday afternoon. People were glued to their screens waiting to hear what the president was going to focus on during his second five year term. Nompendulo Ngubane spoke to young people who shared their views about Zuma’s speech.

“The mistake that the presi dent made was to waste time speaking about what has been done and refer ring to his previous speech. That wasted time and as viewers, we lost focus and ended up changing channels to look for some thing better to listen to. He wasted too much time and as a result, I didn’t make sense of anything that he said.”

Siyabonga Masinga “I’m not going to sing praises about what I thought of the speech. I’m going to say what I think the president should have focused on. He should have focused on the changes that he is going to make. Again, he should have made the youth and education a priority in his speech but I didn’t hear him detailing much on that.”

“We would have loved if the president had touched on the matter of the point system at universities. We do pass matric but then we are faced with a predicament when we have to go and register at tertiary institutions. They are asking for so much and that really kills the morale because we end up sitting at home and not being accepted at the universities just because of the points.”

Selected out of hundreds of entries from around the country, the judging panel was unanimous in saying that Mtolo’s strong portfolio stood out from the competition by reflecting top notch journalism which covered all aspects of what makes an excellent story. “The winning portfolio includes a strong selection of consumerism stories relevant to all South Africans, but given a strong local interest - from the effect of petrol hikes on taxi fares in Maritzburg to the cost of leaking water mains and the use of dangerous skin lightening creams. Media24 KZN Local news general manager, Neil Tapinos, said Mtolo’s achievement is proof ofher“amazingtalentandeyeforgoodstories.” “Media24 KZN Local News is absolutely delighted by the strong presentation we had at this year’s Legends Awards. The fact that Nqobile won over other strong journalists from around the country points to the fact that our Maritzburg local papers are right on the button when it comes to delivering powerful news content. This is reinforced by Compass24 research which shows that 64% of Maritzburg Fever readers feel that community news is dealt with well by the paper,” said General Manager, Neil Tapinos. 14 wounds, 12 years’ jail

June 26, 2014

C

RIES of “There is no justice in this country” and “It isn’t fair” greeted the sentence handed to the killer of FET college student Rashmika Janthielayal this week. Her former boyfriend and fellow student, Claudius Chetty (19), was jailed for 12 years for the “brutal and inhumane” slaying of the 17-yearold. Rashmika’s mother, Shireen, broke down in tears and reacted angrily when Chetty’s aunt (who did not want to give her name) said his family was sorry for what had happened to Rashmika. “Sorry is too late … My daughter is dead and she can never come back. That ar***le will be in jail for 12 years, but we will be waiting for him when he gets out,” an emotional Janthielayal said before she was led away and comforted by court preparation officer Louann Shuttleworth. Shireen Janthielayal said that her daughter was afraid of Chetty and stayed home from college a week before the murder to avoid him. But when she returned to write exams, he killed her. Pleading guilty to the murder charge last month, Chetty admitted he stabbed Rashmika repeatedly in anger at the Northdale FET college campus because she told him she didn’t want to continue their relationship. Both were students at the college. The postmortem showed Rashmika was stabbed 14 times.

Rashmika Janthielayal’s father, Vicky, sister, Santhisha, and mother, Shireen, before the sentencing yesterday. Regional court magistrate Sibusiso Mngomezulu said he didn’t believe Chetty was genuinely remorseful. He said Chetty had stabbed Rashmika in front of eyewitnesses and the state’s case against him was overwhelming, so he’d had no option but to plead guilty. He said the postmortem and photographs of the crime scene revealed that Chetty subjected Rashmika to “inhumane treatment

and extreme brutality”. “You killed her in cold blood when she was not posing any danger to you. One would have expected you to control your anger because she had been your girlfriend. “But your actions show that when you committed this offence, you adopted the attitude that if you can’t have her nobody will,” said Mngomezulu. However, he took into account that Chetty was 18 at the time, that his

youth may have contributed to his “error of judgment”, that he had no previous convictions and could be rehabilitated. He also took into account in his favour that he has been in custody for a year. The state did not submit that the murder had been premeditated and the minimum sentence prescribed was therefore 15 years’ imprisonment for a first offender. “Our hearts will bleed forever,”

She and other family members said they believed a 12-year jail sentence for her murder was not fair or just. “She left my house that morning looking so beautiful. Her hug was so warm. Little did I know she would never come home,” said Ramsahai. Rashmika’s father, Vicky, said justice wasn’t done. Shireen Janthielayal said she was not going to give up and accept the sentence. “We will fight in whatever way we can. He isn’t even remorseful. It took him a whole year to decide to plead guilty,” she said. Shesaidthisinreferencetothefact that Chetty initially applied for bail over several months and said he was pleading not guilty. “I’m told he could be out in five years time. “He lives, but my daughter is lost forever,” she said, tightly hugging her other daughter, Santhisha (16).

ECHO

New date for KZN Capital FM DUMISANI ZONDI

>>dumisani@myecho.co.za THE date for the live broadcast of the long-awaited KZN Capital 104 FM will be July 18, to coincide with the birthday of the late, first democratically elected President Nelson Mandela. The station’s CEO Jerry Jones was also born on this day. He told Echo on Monday that the equipment that had initially stalled their first broadcast has now arrived. The station had been scheduled to render its broadcasting services to communities around the uMgungundlovu region, and some Durban areas, by June 16 to coincide with Youth Day. However, Sentech failed to meet the deadline for a transmission feed.

Judge on a mission >> Having her brother arrested for something that he did not do at the age of 12 was a blessing in disguise for newly appointed High Court judge Thoba PoyoDlwati, as she would not have considered entering into the legal profession otherwise. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to the Pietermaritzburg judge who took office this month, after being amongst other judges who were recently appointed by President Jacob Zuma.

B

ORN in the Eastern Cape 38 -years ago, PoyoDlwati is married to Dr Hlubi-Dlwatiandtheyhavetwo children, Elihle and Dlwati. Poyo-Dlwati moved to PMB in 1996. She has been in the legal fraternity for more than 15 years where she has held various positions, including being the first woman to be elected as the chairperson of the Southern African Development Community Lawyers’ Association (Sadcla). She has also been the president of the KZN Lawyers Association, co-chairperson of the law society in South Africa, chairperson of the gender committee, chairperson of the Attorneys Development Foundation in South Africa, a member of the KZN Appeals Tribunal and also the chairperson of the Black Lawyers Association. “Iamhappyandhumbledas it is a great achievement for me.

Interesting facts about Poyo-Dlwati: >> She holds a BProc degree and a postgraduate diploma in tax law. >> She is a panel member for the KZN Attorneys Examiners Board. >> She enjoys laughing and being with friends >> She loves braaied meat. >> She hates people that undermine others and prefers to treat them because of who they are. >> She takes her work seriously, butisnotyourtypical conformist judge and considers herself a free spirit.

There will be challenges since this is a new area for me, but I am on a mission to work. My schedule will be very busy, as I have to do a lot of reading and preparation. It is by God’s grace that I am here.” A hard worker by nature, had it not been for her brother’s arrest she would probably be in a different field. “I was in matric when my brother went to the mountains for circumcision. There was a fight and one of the boys died. My brother had to spend more than six days in prison at only 12 years old. “I felt helpless and thought if I was a lawyer, I would have done something to save him. That is where my passion for law started. I wanted to know more and eventually decided to study for it.” Although she has been in the profession for years, her concern is that there are still veryfewwomenintheindustry. “Out of the 31 judges in the province, only 10 are women. I think the problem starts from practise as it takes a long time for women lawyers to develop self confidence. Our society is stilltoopatriarchalandweneed to change that mindset. “I want to encourage more women to forget about their gender, as we all have the ability to be who we want to be,” said Poyo-Dlwati. Her dream is to sit in the Constitutional Court one day. She would like to be remembered as a loving, caring woman and an agent of change.

problematic trees with their own tools. Residents around the area say that part of the road was a security risk when waiting for public transport at the local bus stop (knownasthefirstturn),becausethe trees were extremely bushy and hanging into the road. McDonald said that he decided to cut the same trees every year because it is an ongoing problem.

“I pass here every day. This place gets so bushy and when trees are overgrown or hanging on the road, it’s so risky and very difficult to drive through,” said McDonald. Some of the people who wait for taxisintheearlypartsofthemorning have said that a couple of robberies have taken place around the same spot. A regular taxi user and Redwood Crescent resident in Panorama, Lee Pillay, said that it was unfortunate that residents around the area were doing the job of the municipality. “Many years ago, we used to see municipal workers sweeping, picking up papers or cutting grass and trees around this area. “But nowadays, nothing like that happens,” said Pillay. Another local resident, Annacleta Kenny, also confirmed that the area around first turn and the bus stop is not safe. “Most of the people walk through here and wait at the nearby bus stop for taxis, but it’s not safe at all. “The whole area was covered by trees hanging on the road which made it difficult for cars to pass or members of the public to walk by.” Ward 34 ANC chairperson Ivy Terry-Adams praised McDonald for beingagoodexampleinthearea, but advised residents not to hesitate to contact the municipality offices for complaints such as faulty street lights, illegal dumping, open manholes or long grass. Ward 34 Councillor Eunice Majola also praised the community responsibility initiative displayed by the residents. -Jerry Barnes

Ripples for Good NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za OVER 150 schools have benefited from Ripples for Good, an organisation that focuses on sustainable and environmentally friendly projects in disadvantaged communities. One of the schools that have benefited from the project is Dargle primary school in Howick. The campaign started on a bicycle 10 years ago, said Ripples for Good founder Maria Botha. The schools that were part of the project have been repainted, had leaking water taps fixed and more. “I started on a bicycle 10 years ago with a firm belief that everything we complain about, we have the potential to create in a positive way. That means starting with our children and water connecting us. “We have started by fixing schools, leaking water taps and pipes, changing their lights to energy savers and LED, but then we also shared the beauty in life by colouring and renovating our schools for the children to be proud of. The children participate in the process. “Theygettocleanuptheirownschool, start ing with the graffiti, then they get to paint and do handprints,” said Botha. The project started on 13 May and benefited a number of communities. This project is in partnership with Chevrolet Ute Force and Builders Warehouse. They have embarked on a countrywide campaigntointroducemoreefficientwaterand electricity systems to schools. As part of their ongoing collaboration to support needy schools, volunteers from Builders and Chevrolet Ute Force, together with RipplesforGood, haveinstalledenergyefficient electricity systems and repaired damaged infrastructure at many schools.

Warning to parents NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za PARENTSarewarnedtohidepornographicDVD’sfromchildren as they have a high impact on young children practising sex. This was revealed at the Child Awareness campaign that was hosted by the Plessislaer SAPS and Plessislaer Victim Support at Mthethomusha primary school last Friday. The other highlighted finding is that high school pupils download pornographic videos onto their cellphones which also exposes them to sexual activities, said Victim Support representative Fisani Ngcobo Khuboni. She said their investigations have revealed that the most pornographicvideosthatchildrenhaveaccesstoarethosethat sell on the street. “Parents buy loads of these DVD’s at the cheapest prices, they cost only R10 on the street and they are easy to find. The mistake that most parents make is that they leave them in a place where children have access to them. “Once the child has seen the video, they go to school and perform what they have seen. We have cases where teachers have called us to come to school where primary school pupils have engaged themselves in sexual activities. When we investigate, the child often says that they have seen videos at home,” said Khuboni. She said high school pupils download the pornographic videos and keep them on their cellphones. “These ones are so open about it and they are not shy about the fact that they have pornographic videos. This is one of the reasons we again urge the parents to fully monitor what their children are watching at home. There is parental guidance on almost every show or movie on television. That is very important and parents should be guided by that, it’s there for a reason and it should be applied in each and every household. We have had two cases in two of the primary schools where kids were found practising sex. Again it appeared that they had seen pornographic videos at home. Parents should hide these DVD’s and lock them away in a place where kids can’t reach, them” she said

HE Eastwood Community Forum (ECF) is thrilled that robots are currently being installed at the accident prone intersection of Bishopstowe and Staling Road. Maritzburg Fever visited the intersection on Monday and there were two electricians on site. The robots are expected to be working by

next month. According to ECF chairperson Fred Wagner, the intersection has claimed many lives over the years. “We are very happy that the robots have been put up after so many injuries and deaths at this intersection. Although it has taken the Msunduzi Municipality 10 years to address this issue, we are very grateful.Therearealotofpupilswho crossthisintersectionandtherobots

DUMISANI MHLONGO: DIRECTOR OF THE MSUNDUZI PIETERMARITZBURG TOURISM ASSOCIATION

Twenty years of democracy – reflection on tourism DUMISANI MHLONGO

I

T is time to reflect on successes of the tourism industry in the past 20 years. According to President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation address, “The tourism industry has grown dramatically. In 1993, South Africa received a mere three million foreign visitors. By 2012, the figure had grown to 13 million visitors.” According to South African Tourism, the industry has grown significantly over the past 20 years, with visitor growth outstripping the global average. However, not enough is being done to market the country internationally. The findings by Grant

I WOULD like to express my deepest gratitude to Mr Muzi Mzila, owner of Mzila HM Incorporated at Hayfields Mall, fordonatingfootballequipmentto the amount of R5000 to the Edendale Football Association (EFA) amateur side, The Special XI. I felt it appropriate that this gesture of generosity be highlighted and mentioned in the local papers

Thornton, based on data since 1994 and forming part of the 20 YearsofTourismreport, confirmed this. “We’ve done exceptionally well in a number of areas and since democracy, we’ve really opened up as an international tourist destination in a big way,” said Gillian Saunders, head of advisory services at Grant Thornton Johannesburg. Growth in the tourism sector over the last two decades includes hotels more than doubling from 726 in 1994 to over 1 500; casinos growing from 17 often small semirural establishments to 38 large mega-complexes; the total car-hire fleet increasing from 25 000 to 65 000; and luxury coaches from 340

to 720. The number of internationalairlinesflyingtoSouthAfricaalso grew, from 21 to 76 during the period. The issue of investment in marketing, from local to international level is usually cited as a limitation for more growth, which it is, but the side of growth that pertains to transformation of the industry is always neglected. In 2012, the National Department of Tourism (NDT) together with provinces, identified lack of uniformity across spheres of government when it comes to tourism programmes. In light of this, the NDT, provinces and the national treasury developed the Tourism Budget Programme Structure, which

Real community builders I FELT IT APPROPRIATE THAT THIS GESTURE OF GENEROSITY BE HIGHLIGHTED AND MEN TIONED IN THE LOCAL PAPER This is a great example of a local community leader putting his money where his mouth is. What Mr Ndaba and his

identified tourism as a core programme with its own subprogrammes. The stand-alone programme will have three sub-programmes, namely Tourism Planning, Tourism Growth and Development and Tourism Sector Transformation. Nelisiwe Dlamini was announced as the winner of the SABC2’s ‘I want to sing gospel’ contest on Friday.

MBALI gospel artist Nelisiwe Dlamini was on Friday announced as the winner of the SABC2’s season three of ‘I want to sing gospel’ contest. Dlamini, from Imbali’s Unit 13, walked away with R200 000 in prize money and a recording deal with an undisclosed record label after garnering the most votes. Her first runner-up, Lynnzay Baartjies from the Eastern Cape, won R30 000 while Sthembiso Gumede from Durban was the second runner-up and was rewarded with R20 000 for his efforts. Speaking to Echo on Monday, Dlamini said that she is over the moon. “I was not really expecting to scoop first prize. I thought it belonged to Lynnzay - she can sing! I had just told myself that maybe I will come second after her or third,” she said. She expressed her gratitude to the people of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZuluNatal and the whole of South Africa who

voted for her, making it possible for her to achieve this coveted feat. “I would also like to thank God because it is clearly his will,” she said. Apart from unsuccessful auditions with Joyous Celebration many years ago, ‘I want to sing gospel’ was her first singing competition. The contest started in March this year. Dlamini sings under Uhologo productions, which is owned by local businessman Themba Njilo. Expressing his delight, Njilo too thanked all those who voted for Dlamini, in Pietermaritzburg in particular. “I just want to thank God that I have been abletogroomhertothislevelandnowshe hasbeenthrustintostardom.Myadvice to her is that she should always respect people, irrespective of her achievements, because it’s cold up there”, he said. Niilo himself was on Saturday given an award for being a philanthropist of note who cares about the needs of young people by Future Leaders Youth Awards in Durban. In appreciation of Dlamini’s achievement, a free Sinqobile gospel

celebration concert has been organised by herfriendstotakeplaceonSaturdayat2pm at the Pietermaritzburg city hall. Artists and groups lined up to entertain are Fikile Mlomo, Thina Zungu, Abanqobi, Motivation, Mthoko Zakwe, Nathi and Nkanyiso, Melusi Ndimande, Avodah, Justice Kubheka (comedian), Babo, Ndoda Maphumulo, Dudu ka Ndaba, Njabulo Mkhize, Sgwili and many more.

Izwi Youth Movement theatre group members from the Mphophomeni area will be going to Grahamstown for a learning experience from other theatre groups. Sitting down is Sanele Ngobese and Sabelo Khoza some of the members of Izwi Youth Movement.

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za LEARNING new things is a mandate that the Mpophomeni theatre group has to follow, and their journey to Grahamstown next month is part of that. Izwi Youth Movement will be travelling to Grahamstown where they will be performing some of their theatre plays. This is part of the learning experience that thegrouphastogainfromothertheatregroups, said chairperson, Thulani Mthalane. Speaking to Echo he said all nine members ofthegroupareexcitedaboutthetripwhichwill take place from 4 to 25 July. “On this trip, there will be a lot that the group will be engaged in. Firstly, it’s the learning and when we talk about learning we are referring to them grasping something from the other theatre groups they will meet in Grahamstown. Again, that won’t be the conclusion as they will

also have to deliver by performing their plays Inhlambuluko (cleansing) and Battle of the Ages. “They will be going around and performing these plays in different theatres in Grahamstown. For the group, this is again a golden opportunity they will use to put the Mpophomeni area on the map. “It is exposure for them and that could better their careers in theatre,” said Mthalane. He added that they are very grateful to their partners, Twist Project, who have made their shows a success. “The members are very excited about the whole trip and their families are celebrating their journey with them,” said Mthalane. Izwi Youth Group has nine members from different areas of Mpophomeni. The initiative of forming the group was to gather the youth of Mpophomeni so that they could share their views through theatre production.

YUNDAI’s all-new Grand i10 has arrived in South Africa, and this small well-endowed hatchback has everything in its arsenal. It is spacious inside, yet small in overall diameters, and filled with standard features that will make it a compelling choice in the entry-level car market. This hatchback was chosen to fit in between the present, smaller i10 – which is retained in the local model line-up – and the i20. “It fills that spot well – not only in terms of size, but also regarding prices and standard features,” said Stanley Anderson, marketing director of Hyundai Automotive South Africa. The all-new Grand i10 has been launched in South Africa in three derivatives: the 1.25 Motion manual, the 1.25 Fluid manual (with a slightly higher specification level) and the 1.25 Fluid with a four-speed automatic gearbox. The new proportions deliver greater body and wheel control, as well as ride comfort comparable to cars from higher segments. The larger body shell of the Grand i10 yields one of the roomiest occupant cabins on the market, as well as an impressive 256 litres of trunk capacity. At3765mm,theGrandi10is180mmlonger than its smaller sibling, and one of the longest cars in the segment. Likewise, the Grand i10

is also the widest in its segment at 1 660mm. A lower roofline, now standing at 1 520mm, yields an athletic on-the–road stance. Among the many features of the all-new Grand i10 are luxury items such as Bluetooth connectivity to the sound system, keyless entry and electrically heated and folding side mirrors (for the two Fluid derivatives), USB and AUX ports for the sound system, as well as an air conditioner and central locking for all derivatives. All three derivatives are also equipped with frontfoglamps,afull-sizesparewheel,14-inch alloy wheels, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a trip computer and remote controls for the sound system on the steering wheel. Fuel consumption can be as low as a measured 5,9 litres/100km, with emissions of 130g/m in the 1.25 Motion manual and 1.25 Fluid manual derivatives, and 6,9 litres/100km with emissions of 147g/km for the 1.25 Fluid with the four-speed automatic gearbox. Dual airbags and an Advanced Braking System (ABS) take care of safety in the Grand i10. AtapricerangefromR139900toR159900, with Hyundai’s 5 year/150 000km warranty and roadside assistance thrown in, the Grand i10 offers exceptional value.

Shining example from Eastwood EASTWOOD is an area which has previ ously produced a number of profes sional soccer players and academics. This is the thought of proud former resident, and soccer player, Godfrey Tenoff. Tenoff said that criminal activities that from time to time take place in the area are normal, and not unlike other areas in the city. “Maybeweshouldpressuriseourlo cal government to sort out all the sporting facilities around Eastwood. It is impossible to expect this area to pro duce future sport stars as they did many years ago because the sports grounds are in a shambles. It is shock ing to think how we used to train from 4pm to 8pm every day,” said Tenoff. The Eastwood born and well trav elled Tenoff is one example of success from the area. He is not just an outstanding, focused character, but a living example that Eastwood is not a gangsters paradise or drug infested community, but can also produce qual ity future leaders and sport heroes. “Eastwood is made up of a proud and talented community of integrity. Unfortunately, there is the wrong per ception out there about the area,” said Tenoff. He started his early schooling at Eastwood Primary School and later moved to Haythorne High School. During his early career at junior level,Tenoffplayedasamidfielderand as a defender for local amateur sides such as MDFA’s Pirates (U8, U12 and U14) and coached Craig Davis. His former teamates say he was

always a disciplined player, arriving early for training and listened to the coach. He also played for the old, popular Eastwood crowd pullers Leicester City (U16 and seniors), under the guidance of Chris Morrison and Gallies Marais. “Uncle Chris Morrison was always passionate about the development of junior players in the area. He produced a lot of household names and a team that later dominated a lot of competi tions around the Natal midlands region, especially the annual Padsa’s Easter tournament in Northdale,” he said. Tenoff is currently based in Bloemfontein where he has been employed as the head soccer coach of the University Of Free State since 2011. After matriculating at Haythorne, Tenoffwasofferedascholarshipatthe University of Dayton in Ohio with the help of Gus Hornsby. He was there from 1996 to 2000 and won three Atlantic champion ships.Healsoattendedcoachingclass es and holds a United States Soccer Federation D and C licence. He would like to complete his coaching license in the USSA and then continue to get his CAF qualifications. Aside from his coaching papers, Tenoff also studies for a Bachelors Degree in exercise science. Tenoff says he has always wanted to plough back into his community and city when he came back from America but was unlucky not to be given an op portunity in local circles. “Iappliedeverywhere,Ievenhadan interview at Mamelodi Sundowns Academy. Then a post for the soccer manager at the UFS came up and I ap plied for that job. They were impressed and as they say, the rest is history.” Tenoff’s short but loud and wise message to youngsters around his neighbourhood is to “always make ed ucation the priority because your dreams will be limited without educa tion.” Jerry Barnes.

UMthetheleli Shangase who is one of the organisers of the Ward 4 soccer tournament scheduled for this weekend.

NUMBER of under 10 soccer teams are to battle it out at Zibomvini sportsground in kwaShange in the Vulindlela area this Saturday and Sunday for attractive prizes. The Msunduzi Municipality Ward 24 soccer tournament, held just before the end of youth month, is organised by Mthetheleli Shangase, Themba Zondi and local councillor Thandiwe Mercy Buthelezi. Shangase said that the winners will walkawaywithanewsetofsoccerjerseys, atrophyandmedalsandthefirst runnersup will also win a set of soccer jerseys and medals, whilst the second runners-up will be rewarded with a set of soccer jerseys. He said other than uniting the local youthundersport, theeventwill givethem a platform to talk about issues affecting their wellbeing. “We wanted to include netball for the ward’s young women but we could not afford it since we have no sponsorship and are financing the tournament from our own pockets. “We however invite all the young women in the ward to support the event sothattheywillhearthemessages.Wewill definitely do something for them in future,” said Shangase. The tournament will kick off at 8am on Saturday.

More talk than action SOUTH African football continues to shy away from real issues that delay progress of our football. Presently, we do not have coaches and players to win major international events. Since 1994, we have failed to address the deficiencies of players and coaches in this country. SAFA, PSL and the local government municipalities need to understand that co-operation will benefit all role players. It will benefit both clubs andthenationalteamstoputemphasis on youth development and nurturing of potential stars. Presently, there is too much noise from higher echelons, but very little action. The poor relations between SAFA and the PSL has not helped the situation. It is worth checking what has happened in German football since the 2000 Euro Championship disaster. They went all out to improve the facilities and coaching at youth level. This saw the construction of 121 national talent centres to help 10 to 17 year olds with technical practice. Each centre would employ two full-time coaches. Secondly, all professional clubs in both Bundesliga 1 and 2 had to put up youth academies. This was a condition that all the clubs needed to abide with to be allowed to operate. Consequently in 2010, the German team came third with the youngest teaminthetournament.Itisalsoworth noting that 19 players from this group came from Bundesliga 1 while four came from Bundesliga 2. You have young players like Gotze, Schurrle and Reus coming up, while other youngsters like Ozil and Boateng

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA

IT IS WORTH CHECK ING WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN GERMAN FOOTBALL SINCE THE 2000 EURO CHAMPIONSHIP DISASTER. are now established members of the team. Obviously this is a team capable of playing in the present and the future. It is also important to note how this forward thinking has helped club football in this country. Last season, the top European competition was contested by Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. There are now more young German players featuring in the Bundesliga. This in turn has helped in improving the numbers of fans in the stadiums. People always like to support the home grown talent.

Surely we are opposite of these developments? The topic is always about the next national coach who can come up with miracles. Our club sides have also battled to assert themselves in African club competitions. It will be interesting to see how an international Mamelodi Sundowns does in the CAF Cup. Sure, wecanlearnfromtheGerman and Spanish models. However it is important that South Africans develop something suitable to their conditions. This demands a lot of hard work in terms of thinking, researching and experimenting. Are we disciplined enough to entrust the right people with these responsibilities? We need to be ourselves if this country is to become contenders of World Cup glory. The politics of us and them in football is not helping the country to move forward. Personally, I believe this country has capable people. The challenge is for those in power to learn to work even with those they do not like. A lot of money is circulating in our professional football. The problem is that most of this cash does not benefit our youth. The TV deals and higher wages have benefited foreigners rather than the development of local football. The rules about foreign players in our professional league need to be reviewed if we are serious about empowering South African boys. A situation where a club competes with naturalized South Africans deprives local young players’ opportunities to grow. The problem with us is that there are lots of words and promises of a brighter future, yet no governing body in total control of youth development. It will take Bafana Bafana hundreds of years to catch up with top nations if we continue doing more talking than actions. Boys and girls are born every day without any hope for a brighter future. Unzima Lomthwalo!

THE 1992 New York Marathon winner, 1989 and 2002 Comrades Marathon runner up Willie Mtolo said that his next dream is to produce quality athletes who can take the national and international scene by storm. Mtolo spoke to Echo this week after he attended a function held by the Msunduzi Municipalitytohonourlocalathleteswho did well in this year’s Comrades Marathon, including overall winner Bongumusa Mthembu. The veteran ultra athlete said that he is prepared to work around the clock to convince provincial government, local municipalities, KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA), Athletics South Africa (ASA) and the business sector to come on board in order to start an athletics academy. Mtolo said that it is now high time for all stake holders to stop talking and take action. The Underberg resident said that when he staged a training camp in his hometown for six Comrades Marathon runners, the hardship he went through was unbelievable. “You need to make sure that runners are able to sleep and eat properly. The environment is also very important for

If we are all really focused in achieving this goal, we need to stop dreaming and provide resources,” said Mtolo. ASA new elected president, who is also a former KZNA chairman, Aleck Skhosana said that Mtolo’s idea was great and needed to be put into writing for the relevant stakeholders. - Jerry Barnes
