T
WO young men have accused local police for setting their bull dog on them, leaving one of them badly wounded. The incident happened at GU tavern in Queen Street in in town in the early hours of Monday morning last week. Senzo Nene (32) from Imbali Unit 2 and the wounded Sbonelo Nxasane (25) from Elandskop said they demand answers for the attack. Nxasane and his brother Nkululeko Nxasane (26), who say they were not armed, are facing a charge of police assault but they have also opened a case against the two policemen. Nene told Echo that the police came to the tavern during a stokvel event. Hesaidthefirstpolicewhocamewere from Loop Street police station. Although Nene didn’t know what the police had said to the tavern owner but, he said, it was clear they were there to close the tavern. He said some of them were sitting outside when the police entered the tavern. “After they had made their way inside, the music stopped playing. We started singing because the music had stopped. I don’t know whether they were angered by the singing. As
we were outside we saw that people inside the yard [inside the tavern premises] were throwing things at them. “As we were puzzled by that, two Mountain Rise policemen showed up. We believe that they were called by their Loop Street colleagues when they encountered that chaotic behaviour from the people inside, said Nene. He said the two policemen came straight to them and started an argument. “The throwing of things was happening inside the yard not from anyone of us outside. We asked them what their problem was as we were not doing anything wrong. According to Nene, instead one of the policeman started throwing punches at him while the other one took his car keys. He said he asked him why he punched them and that was when the one went to the car and let the dog out of it. “All of us ran but Sbonelo couldn’t run as we did and that is when the dog attacked him. The dog bit him until we thought he took his last breath. We rushed him to Northdalehospitalandhewasarrested the next day. “His brother was arrested because he tried to save him from the dog attack. We want answers, they must tell us why we were attacked and why the two were arrested,” said Nene. The wounded Nxasane said he
feels abused. “I was not armed and did not attack them but yet there is a case opened against me. I want answers for this brutal attack from the police,” he saia. Captain Thulani Zwane advisedthevictims to open a case against the members if they were allegedly assaulted and dogs used to bite them. “The matter will be investigated and they may also report the matter to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for investigation. I also advise the affected victims to see the station commander of the area where the incident took place for help,” he said.

Hunger impacts negatively on students

FTER keeping mum about students’unrest in FET colleges, the Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Blade Nzimande has finally vented out his anger, saying that perpetrators of violence in tertiary institutions will not be tolerated. Since the beginning of this year, there have been various protests by disgruntled FET students from different colleges complaining about various issues, which also resulted into damageofstateproperty. Addressing FET students at the city hall last Friday, Nzimande said: “There are students who are given full bursaries to study at our colleges but do not attend their lectures. “These are the same studentswhoperpetrateviolenceand influence others to protest because they have not studied for their examinations. They damage property under the names of ANC Youth League, Young Communist League and the SouthAfricanStudentCongress (Sasco). “Ifyouburnanythinginanyinstitution, you do not belong to these or-
ganisations and you do not deserve to be called a member of that organisation. We are tired of people who damage state property as a way of voicing their concerns. “They do not belong to institutions but belong in jail. We are in the process of forming an SRC associationforallFETcollegessothat students can have a voice and they canguideusonhowtheywantthecolleges to be run”. Nzimande further lashed out at those students who lie to obtain bursaries, meanwhile they come from affording families. “The department has issued R1.9 billion for bursaries for needy students, but deserving students end up not getting them. Some students have turned these bursaries into social grants,” he said. He said that their 2030 goal is to have FET colleges in every municipality. On top of that an additional of 12 FET campuses are to be built in deep rural areas of the province between this year and next year.

campaign was formed by a public management student at the Mangosuthu University of Technology in 2010. Thabi Ngcobo said that she started this organisation after seeing that some needy tertiary students were turning to crime and prostitution to earn money for food. “Some students who had financial aid would end up de-registering their modules because they had no food,” she said. One of the long term’s goals for the organisation is to establish one food garden in every tertiary institution. The challenge that they currently face is not having enough funding, a warehouse where they would store food and permanent personnel.

Speaking at the launch of the anti-hunger campaign aimed at providing food parcels to needy students from FET Colleges at the city hall last Friday, Nzimande said research indicates that so many of students arefacedwith hunger, which has a huge impact on how they perform academically. “As a department we have formed a partnership with the AntiHunger campaign organisation, and our challenge is to bring more businesses and organisations to take part in this initiative,” he said. Mugging crime reported in Glenwood >> The community wants local taxi operators and the police to help
G
LENWOOD residents have appealed to the Msunduzi Municipality, the local Glenwood Taxi Association and to Mountain Rise Police Station to join hands in stopping a “new type” of crime in certain roads in the area. The concerned residents made the impassioned plea recently when the ANC’s Ward 34 volunteers conducted a door-to-door identity document and voter registration tester campaign. They say criminals walk in groups or in pairs in the early hours of the morning and rob people going to work. Such robberies are reported to be common in Shetland Drive, Les Van Wyk and Arabian Road between 5 am and 6.30 am. Speaking to Echo, one of the victims, who was robbed while walking down Shetland drive to get a taxi in Les Van Wyk road, Sbo Skenjane, said if the police, GTA and the municipality can come together and pay attention to their on-going problem in the area, life will go back to normal again. Community members are also asking why the GTA vehicles refuse to go into the area in the morning. “It’s so risky, all Glenwood residents are forced in the morning to walk right down the main road to get a taxi to go to work. “Why are taxis refusing to go around inside the area, up the road and pick up passengers? We are getting robbed because taxis are refusing to go up the road. “Also we need to see more police vans patrolling the area around that time,” said Skenjane. Msunduzi Municipality spokesman Brian Zuma said crime in the area should be the police responsibility while Ward 34 Councillor Eunice Majola says the matter is receiving the attention and different community structures and forums have been made aware of the is-

sue. “We are aware of the matter and we are currently dealing with it. “GTA members and management always listen to the community and are very supportive. Our aim is to see our community safe and free to walk in their streets without fear.” While Mountain Rise head of detectives, Chris Wiles said they were aware of the crime concerns in the area, GTA was not available for comment. -Jerry Barnes

The teachings of Biko need to be inculcated >>BHUNGANI KA MZOLO writes
O
F the three main former national liberation movements thatwagedthestruggleagainst apartheid, the ANC, PAC and the Black Consciousness Movement/ Azapo, theregimeappearstohavereserved it’s most brutal and cruel intentions for the BCM. This is despite the fact that the BCM was the youngest of the three and largely operated above board. One of the most outstanding of the BCM leaders, Onkgopotse Tiro, was assassinated by the apartheid shit squad when a parcel bomb was sent to him Botswana where he had been exiled. Following his stinging attack of the Bantustan policy during a graduation ceremony, he was expelled from the then Turfloop University. Tiro then took up a teaching post in Soweto where one of his students was the brave youth leader of the Soweto Uprising, Tsietsie Mashinini.
Those who remember him as a teacher say he made teaching a joy to the students and his classes were always packed. However, after persistent state persecution, the BCM together with his family decided it was best that Tiro left the country. But the evil regime followed him there to finish its evil deed. Another BCM stalwart who was killed in police cells is Mapetla Mohapi, who had graduated with a degree in Social Work at Turfloop University, the same institution where Tiro had been studying. The state said Mohapi committed suicide but that was obviously a lie and it was proved that the so-called suicide note was a forgery. He had been assassinated just like Tiro. The tragic and cruel killing of Steve Bantu Biko has been reportedextensively, howtheapartheid policeassaultedhiminhiscelluntilhe was brain-damaged. They then put
him in the back of a van, naked, and drove him from East London to Pretoria, a trip that takes hours on end. Tragically, no-one has ever been held accountable for these killings of leaders of the BCM, even with the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). It is said that when Biko was asked to show that the philosophy of black consciousness had found root amongst the black majority, he only said one word, “SOWETO.” Now, one often hears some people complaining that the ANC is downplaying the role that otherliberationmovementsplayedin the struggle for liberation. While that accusationmightbetrue, andalsounfortunate as many of the present government leaders got their grounding in politics through the BCM, the reality is that that responsibility to promote black consciousness philosophy amongst the masses rests with BCM activists themselves. There seems to be this tendency at times from some quarters
to expect the ANC to be everything to everybody. That is not realistic. I mean, how can anyone expect the ANC to promote the PAC, its policies and its programmes when it is a splinter group? The PAC broke away from the ANC in the late 1950s over the ideological position and it is naïve to expectittolooktowardsthePACasnothing but a rival political organisation. The BCM burst onto the political stage when both the ANC and the PAC had been banned and immediately galvanised black people towards a coherent political programme. Through the revolutionary philosophy of black consciousness as articulated by Biko and his comrades, the masses got rid of their fear following the ruthlessness of the 1960 bannings of the ANC and PAC. All of a sudden, black people were filled with renewed pride in themselves and were consumed by a new vigour to carry on the struggle where the older movements had left off. Blackconsciousnesssawallkinds of people and communities coming togetheraroundthecauseoftheirsuffering, theblacknessoftheirskin, and forming organizations to fight the
racist regime. All over the country, lawyers formed Black Lawyers Association, journalists formed Black Journalists forums, artists formed black artists forums, parents formed Black parents associations etc. There was no denying the reality that the masses were in the grip of a very potent force, and that force was black consciousness. South Africa is today a politically free country largely as a resultoftheworkthatwasdonebythe Tiros, Bikos, Mohapis, Strini Moodleys, Mthuli ka Shezis, Ncaupe Mokoapes and many other gallant fighters ofourliberationstruggle. Itwouldappear that the task facing BCM leaders and activists in this new South Africa is to inculcate the teachings of Biko andhisphilosophytothecurrentgenerations. That work has to start at our homes and continue at schools, not as some kind of brainwashing the young minds, buttoimbuethemwithapride in themselves, as to who they really and what sacrifices were made by others to get us where a we are now. That has to happen if we are complete the revolution that Biko and his comrades started.

HREE Pietermaritzburg charity organisations have been given R50 000 after they were identified as beneficiaries of the Nelson Mandela Marathon proceeds. in August were given R50 000 each. KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Nomsa Dube officially handed over the cheques to the beneficiaries on Thursday following the race that took place on August 25. The beneficiaries were Community Chest, Howick Hospice and Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (PACSA). Receiving the cheques the representatives of the organisations promised that they will use the money on their community programmes. Dube said the Mandela Marathon has earned this province and the uMgungundlovu district municipality an international recognition, addingthat themarathonhastaughtthem that they have to run their own marathon. “The race was a huge success that represented our icon Nelson Mandela. The route reminded us of our quest for democracy. It carries a huge significance of the province and the country and it was indeed a historical day. In the next years to come we are expecting a huge
turnout as a sign of consistence on carrying the Mandela legacy of giving. “As we are here to hand over the cheques to the beneficiaries, we want to ensure that our country continues to be a better place. We are optimistic that without the influence we won’t be where we are today,” she said. Dube said the money handed over to the beneficiaries is directly from the joining fees paid by the runners. “Itwasthefirsttimethattheideaofcharities was implemented and we are happy. We will make sure that next time the race is even bigger so that we can benefit more,” she continued. Community Chest fund-raising manager Angie Narayanan said she was astounded by the amount they received. “I’m grateful and extremely excited. On behalf of everybody in Community Chest we are humbled by this,” she said. Sharon Alva-Wright from Howick Hospice saidsheisthankfulonbehalfofeverybodyfrom their organisation. “I can’t tell you how much it means to the organisation especially the patients, she said. PACSA’s Mervyn Abrahams said Cogta and the municipality are good in making miracles. “I promise that this entire amount will be used on our five community programmes,” said Abrahams.

SOUTH African footballers will be tourists in 2014 World Cup in Brazil. It is sad that ouryoungpeoplewillnothaveanopportu nity to compete with their peers. In recent years we have only participated in the events where our country is a host. ThemajorityofSouthAfricanstendtocon fuse poverty with ignorance. Our African brothers might not have lots of money but they are more intelligent than us. They know how to plan and work towards achieving their goals. A poorer country like Ethiopia beat a highly rated South African team. There is a school of thought that our coun try does not have good players. People fail to understand that excellent footballers are a product of good coaches. Are South

African coaches really good? Daily, we are told about the quality of certain coaches inthiscountry.Statisticsornumbersdonot lie. Where are the players that they have produced in all their coaching years? We do not have players playing in the top leagues in Europe and yet some people tell us that there is quality in coaching locally. The reality is that not only administration butalsocoacheshavefailedfootballinthis country. How many coaches have we ex ported to other leagues in the last ten years? If we are so good why are other Afri can countries not recruiting us? There is still a lot of work to be done in improving the quality of South African football coaches. Winning a PSL league cup does not necessarily make you an international
coach. It is also true that sometimes in this country other means can help you win competitions other than technical compe tency. It is going to be a long process before our footballcanstartcompetingwiththebest. The training of coaches, the accumulation of youth coaching experience and setting up of structures will take a long time. We need to be patient with this process. The problem is that sometimes people in posi tions are scared of telling the truth. We tend to make lots of promises that cannot be fulfilled. This creates lots of expecta tions from the public. If we look at a cycle of ten years like the rest of the nations do, then 2018 will be too closeatarget.Therealistictargettoqualify
and maybe advance to the second round will be 2026. This will also depend on how quick we move in terms of setting up struc tures and the dedication of all involved. Development of excellent sportspersons is not just the work of sports federations. Everyone in the country will have to play a positive role. This includes parents, com munities, business and government. There is no sports federation, for instance, that canprovideequipment, facilities, coaching fees and feed the athletes. The challenge is bigger than most of us think. However, with honesty, cooperation and dedication, South African football can move into the top 20 in the 2030s. Unzima lo mthwalo!
Bucs on path to do SA proud
>> Tunisian Esperance seem to be their toughest hurdle in their way
T
HE South African team and one of the PSL giants, Orlando Pirates, does not only want to win the second African star by winning the Caf Champions League but also to make the whole of Mzansi proud. According to the Buccaneers spokesman Mickey Modisane, if the team goes all the way up to the finals, people in and around the African continent will praise SA not the Soweto outfit. “If you keep on talking only about Pirates in competitions like these, I’m afraid you are short-sighted.Thegovernment,Safa and the whole country are aware that it is now not about Orlando Pirates but the whole country. “Like it not, hate us or like us, Pirates is now repre sentin g SA and we doing everything under the good looking flag and proud colours of South Africa,”said Modisane. Pirates head coach, Roger De Sa says he is excited and proud of his players of making it through to the semis. He agreed that it’s not an easy assignment to campaign in Caf competitions and is hoping for the best. “I think it is clear for everybody that to play in Africa is not pap and vleis. You encounter more than just the challenges of playing, but you get tested mentally and physically.” said De Sa. By Pirates playing a 0-0 draw against one of the Egyptians giants, Al Ahly,
they are confirmed a spot in the two-legged semi-finals. It also means the SA outfit only managed to secure a second spot in their group and will play Tunisian giants Esperance in the semis, with the first leg early next month.
