Employees decry brutality >> They allege that they were tortured by police after five cars disappeared from a city Hyundai dealership NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

E

MPLOYEES of a city Hyundai dealership live in fear for their lives after two of them were recently allegedly beaten by police following the theft of five newly delivered cars from the dealership’s showroom. Theemployees, whospoketoEcho but did not want to be identified, said that between December and January this year, five cars were stolen from the dealership’s showroom floor. They said that since the incident,

theyliveinfearofbeingthenextpolice victim, as they are taken in one by one for questioning. “We cannot even do our work properly because policemen come on a regular basis, and our biggest concern is who will be the next victim to be beaten by them. Two weeks ago, two employees who were taken for questioning came back with injuries, with one of them being severely beaten. The other one was punched in his face and one was beaten all over his body while they covered his face,” said another employee. They also allege that polygraph

tests that were conducted only targeted certain employees instead of focusing on everyone. The employees said that their ordeal started in December last year after four cars that had been delivered went missing in two consecutive weeks. This year again, another car went missing. “We are only responsible for signing that cars have been delivered, and ensuring that everything that is required is there. We do not have control of what happens at the warehouse where they are parked. What is even more confusing is that there is video footage of cars being delivered,

but the CCTV does not show anything when they are taken from the dealership. We are not against police doing their work, but we are worried about the manner that they have chosen to conduct their investigation,” said an employee. SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said police are investigating two cases of assault, and no members have been arrested. “These are serious allegations against members of the SAPS and will have to be substantiated and thoroughly investigated. Once the investigationhasbeenfinalised, thecasewill

be handed over to the senior public prosecutor for a decision, and pending the outcome, a departmental investigation will be instituted. No arrests have been made regarding the theft of the motor vehicles at Hyundai”. Operations director of Hyundai in KZN, Gideon van Rensburg, said that they are aware of the allegations, and they have advised employees to lay a charge with the South African Police Services. “The dealership cannot take the law into its own hands. The theft is the subject of police investigation, which must run its cause.”

ARD skimming has been identified as one of the threats in the card fraud environment which has contributed enormously to counterfeit card fraud. Figures on card fraud by the South African Banking Information Centre (Sabric) have revealed that about 1 281 handheldskimmingdeviceshavebeen recovered by investigators since 2005, of which 129 were recovered last year up to end September. Sabric’s media liaison officer, Kanyisa Ndyondya, said that Gauteng has been highlighted as the province in which this criminal modus operandi is most popular. “Last year, investigators recovered 57 skimming devices in the province alone. This has

highlighted the depth of the problem and, as Sabric, we continuously warn bank customers to be wary of card skimmers and never to let their card out of their sight when performing transactions” said Sabric CEO, Kalyani Pillay. Cards can be skimmed at ATMs or at points of sale. Sabric wants to emphasize the importance of never accepting any assistance from anybody at the ATM and also of shielding the keypad with your free hand when inserting the pin number. “Bank customers who are going to be making use of the internet to do their shopping, should make use of 3Dsecure products and websites that support them,” said Pillay. Explaining what the 3D secure is, she said it is an authentication service that allows only the cardholder to use the card. It is also called Verified by Visa or MasterCard Secure Code, she added. “It helps online merchants and banks know when it is the cardholder that is shopping online. It also allows the cardholder to enter an additional password or PIN to verify the

legitimacy of the purchase. When shopping online, only place orders with the card on a secure website, and do not send e-mails that quote the card number or expiry date,” said Pillay. Bank customers are advised to adhere to the following tips: * If you are disturbed or interfered with whilst transacting at the ATM, it is possible that your card may be skimmed by being removed and replaced back into the ATM without your knowledge. Cancel the transaction and immediately report the incident using your bank’s Stop Card toll free number which is displayed on all ATMs as well as on the back of your bank card. * Know what your ATM looks like so that you are able to identify any foreign objects attached to it. * Never let the card out of your sight when making payments. * If you have debit, cheque or credit cards, don’t choose the same PIN for all of them. If you lose one, the others will be safe. * Keep your transaction slips and check them against your statement to spot any suspicious transactions and query them immediately.

S part of an annual campaign, Pink Drive, a breast-cancer public benefit organisation, on Friday hosted a breast-cancer awareness campaign at the Mfenendala community hall in Sobantu. The campaign was aimed at making women aware that cancer can affect anyone, irrespective of age, and also highlighted the importance of early detection. In a bid to encourage early detection, local women were offered breast cancer screenings and those who were found to be affected were given referral letters to take to hospitals. Speaking to residents, Tshidi Moila, a nurse at Pink Drive, said that women should rush to clinics or hospitals if they detect any abnormalities in their breasts. “Not all lumps are cancerous. Soft lumps are normal, but hard lumps that are also not painful are dangerous. It is important that women check themselves monthly because if left undetected, lumpscangrowfromapeanut size into a marble and then tennis-ball size,” she said, also encouragin women to follow a healthy diet. She further called on women to encourage men to also go for prostate cancer screenings

“B

UT why are we depriving MK veterans of the reverence they deserve?” lamented an old man clad in an ANC T-shirt, in the taxi from Dambuza to town. “Or is it because our ex-combatants are ravaged by poverty that we find it hard to respect them?” “YouseeBab’Zulu,”amiddle-aged man sitting next to the old man mused, “the dignity of MK veterans can only be restored by educating people about the pivotal role that Umkhonto weSizwe played in the liberation struggle.” “That is not enough Vusi,” Bab’Zulu spluttered exasperatedly, “we need to rid ourselves of this disgusting nonsensical tendency of marginalising our soldiers in the organisation. The ANC members across the board, let alone the leadership, need to hold ourex-guerillasinhighesteembefore we could expect the mainstream society to pay homage to them. Otherwise the image of the whole organisation would be - if not already tarnished.” This preceding dialogue gives us an abundant clarity on how people feel about the predicament of MK

MK veterans deserve respect within the ANC

for instance, Kebby Maphatsoe, the national chairperson of MKMVA, is a member of the national executive committee (NEC) of the ANC. His KZN provincial counterpart, Themba Mavundla, is also instrumental in the ANC in the province. It should also be noted that no one can purport to be an MKMVA member without being a loyal card-carrying memberoftheANC - MKMVAderives its existence from the ANC. This gives us a vivid demonstration that MKMVA can never be divorced from the ANC. For the mere fact that you are an industrious and zealous ANC member, who unfortunately happens not to be an MKMVA member, should not make you resentful and envious of MK veterans. The National Democratic Revolution (NDR) should never be desecrated through the trivialisation of MK veterans - the ANC members should learn to embrace and respect the ex-combatants. Do you think the organisational ancestry of Chris Hani, Joe Slovo, OliverTambo,JBMarks,HarryGwala and Moses Mabhida, the list is endless, is happy about the indignities to which MK veterans are subjected? Was the execution of MK guerillas such as Solomon Mahlangu, Vuyisile Mini, Walter Khanyingo and many others, in vain? Was Nelson Mandela playing games when he underwent military training in Algeria, Ethiopia and China, becoming the first commander of MK? Indeed this despicable attitude of being scornful of MK veterans should be refrained from. Moses Kotane, one of the ANC/MK stalwarts, had this to say: “For one to be a true cadre of the movement it is necessary to be born again, to become a new person.” *Siyabonga Mshengu is chairperson of Kwa-Pata school governing body

>> These freedom fighters are now treated contemptuously veterans. These freedom fighters are now treated contemptuously, even by ANC leaderswhoaresupposedtobeexemplary in terms of treating them with dignity. The ANC is now thronged with ignoramuses who are not conversant with its literature, which has and continues to breed an embarrassing ignorance regarding MK. Doesn’t this explain why you would find the veterans being patronised by these opportunist newcomers who joined the organisation after 1994 when it was fashionable to do so? WhentheANCreluctantlydecided to form Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961, due to the intransigence of the white regime to relinquish oppression, the aimwastoescalatethestruggleofthis very ANC to liberate this country from the ravages of apartheid. But what is baffling and appalling is that these people who call themselves loyal and disciplined ANC members are the ones who discount MK veterans, acting as if the estab-

lishment of MK was frivolous. The veterans have become Cinderellas in the organisation. The branch is the most important sphere of any political force, for it is closest to the rank and file. I doubt if all branch executive committees (BECs) of the ANC are well versed in terms of the organisation in its entirety. In my personal experience, some BECs’ members know nothing about Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA), and that it ispartandparceloftheANC.TheANC needs to take the issue of induction seriously. What is needed for all new ANC members is a properly structured programme of induction and political education at a branch level. This would make sure that people who serve on these BECs are well equipped in terms of understanding all the workings and components of the ANC. Isn’t it disgraceful being an ardent ANC card-carrying member, yet being diametrically in the dark

with respect to MKMVA and its role in the ANC? The ANC Moses Mabhida region was named after the commissar and chief political instructor of MK, Moses Mabhida. But does the leadership of this region reflect that in their dealings with MK veterans? We hope that Senzo Mchunu, as the new ANC chairperson in this province, would recognise MKMVA. Does the ANC leadership rejoice failing to honour their promises to assist MK veterans? I’m struggling to understand why Meshack Radebe as anANCleaderfailedtokeephispromise of hiring military veterans to address the issue of rhino poaching. When MK suspended the armed struggle in 1990, which ultimately led to its disbandment in 1993, the ANC never uttered a single word that the ex-combatants had now become obsolete in its political life. Which is why you would find the leadership of MKMVA(establishedin1996)playing a crucial role in the ANC structures,

Celebrating Black History Month at UKZN on 28 February

M

ORE often, February is known as a month of love because of Valentine’s Day which falls on 14 February. Very few people are aware of the fact that February is regarded as Black History Month, which is celebrated by black people internationally. Black History Month was founded in 1925 by Cater G. Woodson, with an aim to honour the importance of Black achievements and their contribution in the upliftment of humanity. During this time, we remember the lives of men and women like Nelson Mandela, Julius Nyerere, Malcom X, Steve Biko, Mangaliso Sobuko, Marcus Garvey, Queen Nyahbinghi and many more who played a part in uplifting humanity. As Africans, we value our

history and see the great need to pass knowledge to the younger generation so that our history does not get lost in time. As a result, the uprising events coordinating committee, in association with the University of KZN’s School of Religion, Philosophy and Classics, is hosting a one-day workshop at the University of Kwazulu-Natal to seal up Black History Month on 28 February. We hereby invite students and anyone who is interested in knowing more about black history to attend Black History Month celebration at the university’s new arts centre on the day. The workshop runs from 10am until 3pm. Refreshments will be provided. Inquiries can be directed to 079 625 5660. -Supplied

MY ECHO SOAPIES

>> Deceit, love and fear are all in your soapies this week ISIDINGO CHARLIE decides to risk all to prevent Brad fromfindingoutthetruth.Nikiwelearnsthather uncle is serious about learning to manager his anger. Sechaba decides to investigate the new rival that threatens to rob him of his best cus tomers. Charlie’s past is more haunting and more tragically controlling than she ever imag ined. There are changes afoot in the Sibeko household as a new Jefferson surprises every one. Lerato and Sechaba find that business competition can burn badly. Bradley decides to be proactive in protecting Charlie. Jefferson is optimistic about the future of his marriage. Ler ato enlists Prada’s help in fighting the shebeen food wars. Brad’s feelings for Charlie cause him to lose perspective. Jefferson Sibeko struggles to gain what he wants most in the world. Rajesh Kumar becomes embroiled in the politics of the Bunny Chow. Charlie grows tired of everyone fussing over her, but danger lurks. Jefferson is determined to win Katlego back, but business is getting in the way of his efforts. Sechaba pins his hopes on Rajesh’s curry. SCANDAL A NEW and extremely significant omen makes Daniel’s and Shakira’s blood run cold. An zani finds out something which makes her fear that her and Lerumo’s love is doomed forever. Ndumiso surprises Gontse with a bold and spon taneous gesture. A surprise visitor arrives at the Nyathi house bringing the fire of the ancestors. Anzani makes the most difficult decision of her life.TheGontseNdumisoSarafinatrianglegets more complicated.

RHYTHM CITY SIFISO’Soldpal,TsetseFly,showsupanden courages him to bunk off work. Sis Bee arrives at the jumble sale to upstage Mamokete with her own jumble sale. Mamokete bites off a bit more than she can chew when she takes Sis Bee head on. Bash pitches the numbernumber scam to Lerato. Mamokete continues her quest to win Pastor Isaac’s approval. Sifiso is strug glingtodealwiththedemandsofTsetseFly.Niki gets very suspicious about Bash and Lerato’s re lationship. Fats thinks he knows what Suffocate and Niki are up to and alerts Bash. Lerato tries to find a candidate to pull Bash’s number number scam on. Sifiso is uncomfortable with lying to Miles about the nature of his relation ship with Tsetse Fly. Lerato tries to make a date with Fausto for the sting. Miles is going to Cape Town and Tsetse Fly wants to move in while he is away. Sis Bee does not take the bait when Mamokete offers her an opportunity to come clean. DAYS OF OUR LIVES CHLOE leaves a note and heads to the docks where she jumps into the water leaving Parker sittingonthedocksbyhimselfwithanote.Philip gets there in time and saves Chloe. Abe warns Chad about the DiMera family. Philip realises what Kate and Melanie were up to. Nicole tries to get information out of Taylor about how she met E.J. Roman tells Bo that he is being reinstat ed on the forces but Hope is not. *There will be no Days of our Lives on 3, 4 and 5 March due to the cricket.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL TAYLOR urges Steffy to tell Liam about the pregnancy. Brooke en courages Hope to remain opti mistic that Liam will call with word that he has chosen her over Steffy. Bill attempts to give Liam all of the reasons why Steffy is a much better match for him than Hope. Katie tells Hope what Bill is doing, but Hope remains confident that Liam will not be swayed by his father. While picking up her daughter’s be longings, Taylor relays to Liam about the monumental mistake that he is making by lettingSteffygo.DayzeeconfessestoMar cus and Carter more information about her past life on the streets of Skid Row. Dayzee explains more to Marcus and Carter about the circumstances sur rounding her association with Maya. Steffy sincerely pleads with Hope to give Liam the space that he needs to make a proper decision between the two of them. Pam and Don na are concerned when they begin to suspect that some thing romantic may be developing be tween Eric and Taylor.

Indoor soccer is alive and kicking in SA

T

HE country now has a new indoor soccer league and it’s known Saifa. It falls under the country’ governing body Safa. The soccer indoor league, under the South African Indoor Football Association (Saifa), is popularly called “Futsal” around the globe and is currently taking SA by storm. It’s fixtures are played all over the country every weekend. What is more interesting, and not known by many, is that the chairman of Saifa is local legal guru and long serving executive member of Safa, Poobie Govindansamy. Govindansamy this week told Echo that “Futsal” is very popular around the world and fixtures are played twice a week. He said soccer giants such as Spain, Brazil, Italy, Germany and others start by moulding their players in the indoor leagues, before graduating to outdoor. “I am glad that the mother body, Safa, agreed to start and to accommodate their new baby Saifa, commonly called Futsal in soccer circles around the world. “I am also excited that our affiliates (teams) are coming from all the SA provinces. Other provinces are already becoming powerhouses of Saifa. “It is also interesting that there are a couple ofteamsfromtheCityOfChoicelikeMaritzburg Hotspur and Young Natalians,” said Govindansamy. Another Pietermaritzurg-based administrator, Ebrahim Hossen, who is Saifa’s general secretary, told Echo that the new look league received a shot in the arm and was sponsored by the 2010 Fifa World Cup Legacy Trust that has provided R1.6 million. But this requires additional sponsorship that will boost the growth of Futsal and create opportunities for all South Africans. The immediate aim of the league is to createcredible competition and this can only be done by having a sustainable National Futsal League across the country.

Pietermaritzburg’s Poobie Govindansamy is chairman of the recently formed South African Indoor Football Association (Saifa) with falls under Safa.

“We don’t achieve good results on the international scene because we lacked experienced players. We can only have such players if we have a competitive league which we can select our best players from,” said Hossen. Currently, the league is made of 120 players who are eligible for selection to represent SA on the Futsal international scene. “We are now following in the footsteps of countries such as Brazil and Spain.” he said. HAVING scooped medals in the international wheelchair racing tournament that was held in Cape Town last week, chairperson of Richmond Riders Club, Michael Luthaka, says that disability does not mean inability. The club, which deals with all issues of people living with disabilities through sports, broke records by coming back home with ten medals - five gold, four bronze and one silver, beating participants from different countries. The club also made their mark by participating in the Nelson Mandela marathon last year, which was opened for the first time to people living with disabilities. Its other projects include skills development, computer training, craft and developing all sporting codes for people living with disabilities. Speaking to Echo, Luthaka said: “This is a great achievement for us, especially since we had many challenges prior to the tournament. Although we did not get enough support, coming back with these medals is very encouraging. “If you are living with a disability, it does not mean it is the end of the world. Living with a disability, does not mean that you are unable to do things. “You can still do something that the whole world can be proud of. It was not easy as we competed against world champions.”

IT is impossible to improve and progress without applying yourself. Presently, there is not much training and competition happening in South African football. There is very little action. The country has also invested huge amounts in training football coaches. It is unfortunate that most of these coaches are not training any players. Coaches can only get better through working with players daily. We also have many other uncertificated coaches that only talk about football. They have a bit of knowledge and experience but are not willing

to educate the youth of this country. They have lots of opinions and ideas yet they areunwillingtotesttheirtheories. We need to learn that wishes, plans and promises nevergotanyoneanywhere. It is not possible to succeed without making sacrifices. Improvements are only possible when people act on their goals. Are we a nation that strives for excellence? It is interesting to listen to the general public talking about our footballers. We call them all kinds of negative things. Are South Africans generally a hard working

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA people? Do we strive for 100% or are we just content with a 30% pass mark? Do we generally go beyond the call of duty or expect more money for overtime? Football is part of a country’sculture.Footballofficials, coaches, referees and players are members of communities. If a community is corrupt or lazy, do not expect a different situation in football. The sooner we learn that there are no free lunches in this world, the better for the future of South Africa. It has to start with parents and those in leadership positions. Our boys and girls need to be encouraged to make an effort to do their best in sports and academic work. The reality is that young people model their parents and other adults. South Africa is rich with sporting talent that need to be cultivated. Presently, no South African footballer has joined the aristocrats of football in the European leagues. We continue to fail generation after generation. Let us have more action and less talking. Unzima lo mthwalo!

ESPITE Maritzburg United being able to avenge on Saturday their previous week’s defeat against Mpumalanga Black Aces during the Nedbank Cup last 32, the attendance was disappointing. After beating the visitors at Harry Gwala stadium 2-1, the Team of Choice will tomorrow at 8 pm at the same venue host Moroka Swallows in the league clash. The local side seems to be looking different since the former Free State Stars mentor Steve Komphela took over from Clinton Larsen. The majorityofplayersarenowlookingmorecomfortable on the ball and eager to attack brilliantly as a unit. After the game against Aces, Komphela said he was happy the way his side was now playing but still worried about the lack of concentration in crucial stages of the game. “Maybe we need to work a bit harder and do more drills in our defence. We need to be mentally strong and be vigilant for the whole game,” he said. Swallows captain, Lefa Tsutsulupa, said histeamisexpectingatoughmatchagainstthe host side but are prepared to give them a good run for their money. “We are aware that United are desperate to move up the log table and be away from the relegation zone. They are also motivated after winning against Aces and playing good football under Komphela. We need to be very careful against them because we are also on a mission to move up the ladder. Expect this clash to be dominated by endless fireworks,”said Tsutsulupa. -Jerry Barnes
