Pastor: I don’t heal Aids

>> PastorNgcobo stops people from using ARVs NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@mye cho.co.za

A

LLEGATIONS abound that Apostolic Faith Revival centre pastor Sphamandla Ngcobo, claims to heal people living with HIV and Aids by praying for them. However, speaking to Echo, Ngcobo denied the allegations, saying he came to Esigodini last Tuesday with the aim of preaching the word of God. His tent is near

Esigodini clinic and the Roman Catholic Church in the area. A worried source told Echo that on Sunday, as he was near the tent, heheardapreacherpromisingcongregants that he was going to bring people who are dependent on antiretrovirals (ARVs) for them to see. He said the church had stopped them from using the ARVs because they are now living on prayers. Ngcobo said he has never made allegationsthathehealsHIV,saying that can be confirmed by recorded video clips that are always taken

during the church service. Echo visited the Esigodini area where the tent is. One of the residents who spoke to Echo said the only worry they have is the noise that is coming from the church during the service. “The problem with the tent churches is the noise. It is unbearable. They sing and play instruments until late and that is unfair to the people who have to wake up for work the next day. “We are not against them praying and fighting demons, but

would ask that they finish earlier so that people can rest,” he said. Ngcobo said he has received the same complaints that people were not happy about the noise. “A senior member from the Roman Catholic Church told me thattherewerecomplaintsfromthe people. He said people were complaining that there is too much noise coming from the tent. “We then asked if we could at least finish the service earlier. The church member promised that he would discuss our request with

other members of the church. Those are the complaints I have received so far. “I have never promised anyone that I heal HIV. The reason I’m there is to preach the word of God and to chase away the demonic spirits,” emphasised Ngcobo. Asked why he chose to come to Esigodini, he said one of his church members had a vision about the area. “After that vision, we decided that we needed to come here and stay for three weeks,” he said.

As one grows older, we are more prone to chronic diseases and we want to keep fit. “We do aerobics, swimming classes, fun walks and engage in different sporting codes such as soccer and running. Motlanthe finally weds Imbali woman

ECHO

D

EPUTYPresidentKgalemaMotlantheandhis long time partner, Gugu Mtshali, finally tied the knot in a colourful traditional ceremony in Pietermaritzburg this past weekend. The pair were married at Mtshali’s home in Imbali township on Saturday. Leaked pictures of the happy couple singing and dancing followed by crowds made it into The Witness on Monday, following the ceremony that seemed to have escaped the glare of the media. A jovial sounding Mtshali told The Witness that as per tradition, she cannot speak about the matter. “But I can confirm that there was a traditional ceremony. It was just about bringing together the two families - my family and that of Baba Kgalema.” Asked about how she was feeling after the ceremony following the long-term courtship, Mtshali who said she was still in Pietermaritzburg on Monday - said, “As you can hear, I am laughing, but that is all I am saying. No comment my brother.” Asked what future family plans were in the pipeline, shewasalsocoy, sayingthatwasallinthefuture and people should just keep watch. Last year, Motlanthe and Mtshali appeared to be heading for the altar. While attending the funeral of Mtshali’s father awell-knownImbaliresident,SolomonGayiMkhize (77) who was fondly known by locals as “Khehla” Motlanthe was asked by The Witness if marriage was on the cards. He replied, “It is heading that way.” A guest at the event, who declined to be named, said she was honoured to have been part of the ceremony. “On Saturday, under the beautiful clear skies on the hills of Imbali a special event was taking place ... hundreds of guests came to partake in this traditional wedding of Gugu and Kgalema.” “Thetraditionallyattiredgroomwassymbolically washed by the bride. A bed was also prepared for the groom to lie on. Kgalema reassured the family that he will take good care of Gugu. I was honoured to be a guest at such auspicious occasion,” she said.

VOX POP ON INKANDLA REPORT P

UBLIC Protector Thuli Madonsela has found that President Jacob Zuma and his family “unduly benefited” from the security upgrades to his private Nkandla residence. She has recommended that the president pays pay back part of the money spent on improvements to the property. NOMPENDULO NGUBANE spoke to people to find out what their thoughts are on the issue.

Sihle Makhathini “Zuma is not the first president to build a house. Other presidents in other countries have beautiful houses but there was no noise that was made out of it. I think the whole re port issue is a way of trying to drag his name through the mud.”

Sbusisiwe Zuma

Bongiwe Sthole

“I would like to raise a point that I was not happy that the report was in English. Not everybody is able to understand English. We had eldery people that were interested in knowing the outcome of the invesi gation but it was difficult to some as it was in English. No one is perfect and I don’t understand why the president’s residence is an issue.”

Baraba Mbona

“I have one question with re gards to this issue. Why is all of this happening while we are approaching the elections? I see this as one of the things aimed at de stroying the president and his organisation’s name. Many of these politicians splash money in any way they like. It was so unfortu nate for Zuma, but we are be hind him all the way.”

Minenhle Zondi

“No one is perfect and if I was the pres ident, I would have built a beautiful house for my family. Most of them are corrupt and that is a thing that one would do if he/she was in the position. I don’t care about him paying back the money, that money is not going into my account or helping me in anyway.”

“Zuma is the president and he is entitled to a beautiful home. We can talk all we want, but the fact is, if it was any other president he would have built a lavish home for his family. Lets focus on other things and leave Zuma’s home and family alone.”

The neighbourhood around the area became unstable because their unwanted neighbours caused a lot of problems. “People around here started complaining about the unbearable noise, heavy drinking, fights and breakins,” said Sayed.

Hutchinson was lucky to not have to serve her whole sentence of 20 years, but only eight of them, and she is currently out on parole. “This is my seventh month back home.” According to her, on the first day of her release she promised to start something positive to give back to her community and so started a feeding scheme. The Gift of the Givers are her main grocery donors. “I honestly thought about my dirty past. That’s how I started my feeding project. I am lucky to have my daughter at my side. She also cares a lot about the needy and is always prepared to take time out to feed the hungry,” elaborated Hutchinson. “Approximately 70 percent of the people living here in Ghostown, young and old alike, are unemployed. There’s also the big problem of drugs and alcohol. “My project is blessed to have our main pillars, the Gift of the Givers who made it possible. The local butchery Al-Ameen are also playing an important role by supplying us with meaty bones.” Hutchinson’sseconddreamistostartacommunity garden behind her house in order to provide vegetables for Ghostown’s needy families. “There’s a vacant piece of land behind my house and if the municipality agrees, we can use it for a good cause.”

Aunty Sherine, as she is popularly known by everybodyinherneighbourhood, doesnothide the fact that she is a former jailbird. She was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for dealing in drugs. “I was selling all types of drugs in the area and had customers from all over Pietermaritzburg, especially around Woodlands and the Northern areas. “I was a bad women in my area and destroyed my community,” she recalled. Honestly speaking, I did not like it at all because I was killing my neighbours’ children and my whole community.” For Hutchinson, getting caught and being sent to jail was an eye-opener and a life lesson. “God was talking to me and wanted to teach me about the reality of life. Although I was spied on andreportedtothepolicebyoneofmycompetitors, I don’t blame anybody because I was wrong from day one.” Hutchinson believes if you are suffering, poor or unemployed, you should not take short cuts to riches but speak to your God to provide. “My years in jail taught me that you must neverdecideonyourown.Alwaysaskguidance from your creator because He brought you into

LISTENED, without prejudice, to the general secre tary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), Irvin Jim, who had a short interview on Radio 2000 recently. He was talking about the proposed rolling mass action, which his union is preparing to lead until the year 2016, in response to the new youth employment tax incentive (and of course Zwelinzima Vavi’s suspension as the main reason). It does feel like Numsa has begun to engage in a prolonged battle with the ANCled government due toeconomicpolicyandotherpoliticalmatters, partic ularly the issue of the suspended Cosatu general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, whom Numsa and other several unions want back. It feels like we have been herebefore.Howcanweforget how the apartheid govern ment grinded to a halt when unions cemented the anti apartheid campaign, as the mass democratic movement took to the street in protest against a brutal system that oppressed and suppressed its SIMPHIWE opponents? We cannot forget how Thabo Mbeki’s government faced a Cosatu and youth leaguethatfacilitatedhisresignationasthecountry’s state president. Idonotknowhow, underthepresentdispensation under President Jacob Zuma’s government, the coun trycanavoidorstoprollingmassactionoracampaign that Numsa has promised to engage in until the year 2016 (i.e. when it will be ready to unseat the ANC as the workers’ socialist party gains momentum, perhaps?). Common sense may be said to be not common, but mine tells me that a union that has so much mon ey in its reserves like Numsa does can definitely sustain a prolonged campaign and that this is not wishful thinking, or an empty threat. So I listened with great interest when Jim spoke on radio and he did not deviate from what his preferred Cosatu leader, Vavi, who is presently on sus pension, has said before. Jim and Vavi are not neces sarily wrong in arguing that a twotier labor system is being quietly ushered in if youths are encouraged to take up jobs that could pay them between R2000 and R6 000 a month. Jim argued on radio that people who are within that bracket do not pay income tax and therefore are not making a contribution to the state coffers, pre cisely because they are underpaid. The big question seems to be why does the country need people who are paid enough to qualify to pay taxes and those who are too poorly paid to qualify to pay taxes in the first place? The last time I checked, Cosatu was pushing the

living wage to R12 000 a month and given the high cost of living, the figure sounded fair and just to me. Hence, the labour federation leaders maintain their stance that it is possible to create decent jobs for peo ple – both old and young. I know that the buying power of any country is dependent on the capacity of its citizens to earn a living wage so that they can be in a better position to purchase goods and services and hence boost the economy. I know that Europe achieved this and the majority of people on that continent were once said to be enjoying secured social and economic circum stances even if a few were rich. I also know that the architects of apart heid were in cahoots with the bosses of industrywhentheycheapened black education so that only white people could get good jobs, and thus ensure that there was abundant cheap labour in the interest of the development of the then ex clusively whiteowned indus tries. So Jim and Vavi are not MKHIZE necessarily out of order here. It is possible that some of us do like the easy way out e.g. luring business to employ people in big numbers by relaxing employment meth ods and pay packages in view of poor cooperation from business – hence the introduction of incentives to encourage business to employ people, as well as labour brokers. As an impatient person, I do not know if it is right or wrong to have to wait for Jim and Vavi’s grand plan to nationalise the economy and push the manufac turing sector to give people decent jobs. It does not feel cool at all to have to keep over 50 000 unem ployed graduates in this country waiting to be employed (in fact, the unconfirmed number of edu cated or trained youngsters who do not have real jobs is standing at over 600 000 presently). To use current finance minister Pravin Gordhan’s words, are South Africans okay with making the future generation inherit a more “modest” social and economic circumstance that still requires a lot of im provement? Or to use Jim’s proMarxist line of thinking: is it all about the class struggle in a world which favours capital and undermines the working class? Personally, I like it when rich and working class neighborsbothhavefoodtoputonthetableandtheir children can go to school and they all get medical care and they all have access to transport and recreation. If it was possible for Europe to achieve this, why should Africa fail to do the same? Can Numsa take us to the promised land of dreams? *Simphiwe MKhize writes in his personal capacity.

ENARD Parker has finally opened up about his strained relationship with Lehlohonolo Majoro, saying his former strike-partner struggled to handle ‘the downside of football’. In the new edition of KICK OFF Magazine, ‘Hond’ talks candidly about how he and ‘Major’ – now at Orlando Pirates – fell out towards the latter’s time Kaizer Chiefs. Rumours of a brawl between the two did the rounds a while ago, and while Parker does not confirm or deny the reports, he is frank about how their relationship went downhill when Majoro’s game-time dried up. “In my first season Majoro and I were good friends. In the second season we were also good. We started a lot of games together and scored lots of goals … that’s when we won the Championship. “Now in the third season Majoro didn’t get much time to play you know, so I think that frustratedhimalot.Ithinkinhiscareerhehad never seen the downside of football, when he is not getting time, so I think that frustrated him a bit and he didn’t know how to deal with it. “He dealt with it in a different way doing all sorts of things – but I’m an honest person and I was upfront him, and when I told him an honest thing, he didn’t like it. He was telling me I know too much! “But he found me in this game … he found meplayinghere.Weplayedtogetherandifyou don’t wanna be shouted at, and if you don’t want to take advice, then who do you think you are? He didn’t take things in a good way and he was saying all sorts of things.” Parker goes on to explain how they were called in by management and how Majoro ‘destabilised the group’, but also adds that he hopes his former strike-partner makes a success of his time at Pirates and gets back into the Bafana Bafana set-up. –KICKOFF

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA TEAM sports such as football present a dynamic and unpredictable envi-

Coaching and training needs to challenge the mind ronment. To isolate a specific technique is useless without the dynamic of time, decision making and teammate/opponent movements - Teaching Games for understanding by Turner Martinez. The sooner we appreciate this reality in football coaching, the better for the game’s development. Technique, tactical development, physical demands, psychological and emotional aspects require resistances of space, time, teammates and opponentstobedeveloped.Itcanonly

be considered a football practice once the above requirements are met. Passing practice should be tested under the pressure of time, space and opponents. Anything that does not take this into consideration is a waste of time and effort. Although, there was no formal footballtraininginfootballduringour days, informal games in the streets and open fields developed all these necessary football skills. We learnt how to pass and dribble the ball within the game situation. We

never ran around cones and pretended to be penetrating the opposition. Passing to each other for instance without an opponent, time constrains, limited space does not develop decision making. The reality is that coaching football in South Africa is still far behind in terms of understanding these dynamics.Wearenotgoingtoachieve much if training and coaching does not challenge the mind. Any football practice without a ball and opponent resistance will not improve perform-

ance. Coaching football is the most difficult task, considering the amount of technical-tactical skills to be taught. Understanding and respecting the principle of specificity becomes critical for effective learning. We will recommend therefore that if coaches are not sure, opt for the game of 5 vs 5 or 7 vs 7 to train players. Playing the game itself will teach them far more than just doing meaningless exercises. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Things are ‘V ERY B AD’ VERY BAD at Arrows >> “We are trying everything we can to better the situation,” Vilakazi tells KickOff.com.

OLDEN Arrows media officer Vusumuzi Vilakazi says the current situation at the club “is very bad.” Arrows are currently bottom of the table with 13 points, four points adrift from second-from-bottom Polokwane City, although they do have two games in hand. Added to that, they got knocked out of the Nedbank Cup on Saturday night, following a 4-1 thumping at home to Mamelodi Sundowns. “Things are very bad. We are trying everything we can to better the situation,” Vilakazi told KickOff.com. “If you talk about the mood I wouldn’t want to say the mood is ‘okay’.” And things are not getting any easier for Arrows – their next two League matches are against Bidvest Wits and log leaders Kaizer Chiefs. They only have three home games left this season and Vilakazi believes getting maximum points at their turf will be crucial to their chances of beating the drop.

Could Enver Wiltwer be headeing home to Maritzburg United? WHEN Echo was in the Free State recently, the newspaper was informed that Free State Stars midfielder Enver Wiltwer, who hails from Eastwood, could be heading back to his home town. The former Maritzburg United midfielder joined Stars three seasons ago under Steve Komphela, and enjoyed his career away from home. Wiltwer’s contract is expiring in June and there are strong rumours suggesting that the formerEastwoodSecondarypupilmightrejoin his old coach in Pietermaritzburg. His brother, Lloyd Wiltwer, confirmed to Echothathisyoungerbrotherwascomingback home to re-join the Team of Choice in the new season. “As far as I’m concerned his move from the Free State to the Team of Choice has been finalised because his contract will be up in June,” he said. The player refused to comment about his future. TeamofChoicespokesmanBrianZuma shot down the speculations on Wiltwer’s move. “I’m not aware of anything like that. Also our chairman did not say anything so far about the matter,” said Zuma. All local soccer fans can do is watch the space. –Jerry Barnes
