said over the past eight months, there has been a dramatic increase in “pirate” metered taxis and with that, an increase in attacks on customers. Many members of the public do not know the difference between the legitimate and pirate meter taxis. “Wehavenocontroloverthatindustry,” said Sanjay Mewalall of Wilkins taxis, who is the treasurer of the GPMTA. “Over the past eight months, there has been such an influx of pirate taxis in the

city. This situation could turn violent and it will bring the city to a standstill.” He said their association received numerous complaints from customers who had allegedly been attacked and robbed while using the illegal meter taxis. “These taxis do not belong to the asso ciation, they have no cameras, they are not monitored and we cannot do anything about them. I run a legitimate business, I pay thousands of rand in advertising and these guys are just destroying it.”

An official from Metro Taxis and senior memberofGPMTAsaid:“Wehavereceived many complaints, with customers report ing that they have been mugged, drivers being rude, drunk and others taking drugs while on duty. This all happens within the illegal metered taxi industry,” he said. He said trouble was brewing between drivers. “If there is a passenger heading to one of the more established taxis, and the illegal taxi starts calling that customer,

there is going to be friction.” He said the illegal industry was allowed tothrivebecause“lawenforcementhasal lowed it to thrive”. Another operator said he was going out of business because of the illegal metered taxis. “We run a legitimate business and pay our taxes. I am losing customers and have had to let some of my guys go.” He said. Transport Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane could not be reached for comment.

belongs to Zethembe Msomi, who rubbished it as a scam. Recovering from a gunshot wound, he saidhewasinnofitstatetoholda“sexparty”. “[There is] no sex party. Albert Falls Dam knows nothing of it and [nor] do I. Someone is trying to ruin my name,” Msomi said when approached for comment. “It will look like I’m trying to ruin Albert Falls’ name while I don’t know anything. I’m in a bad situation for now. I can’t walk until the end of September, so how can I host an events like this?” Msomi said he will meet with his parents and report the matter to the police. He was wounded in the leg in January.

Msomi was at a loss as to who could have been responsible for tarnishing his name and associating him with the “sex party”. “SinceIcameoutofhospitalinMarch,I’ve neverbeenclosetoanyonebesidesmyfamily and my girlfriend, so I don’t really know what I’ve done wrong and why they are doing this to me.” The WhatsApp group, titled “party animals”, shows shocking pornographic videos and photos. Only males are allowed into the group. The display picture shows a half-naked woman. Pictures of women who have supposedly confirmed the attendance are posted. The group administrator posted: “We will meet in town, collect R200 and go to the venue together. Don’t force them to have sex with you. We don’t want to hear rape cases. If you don’t behave accordingly, we will beat you up.” Happy Ndlovu, acting marketing manager at Msinsi Resorts and Game Reserves at Albert Falls said, “As Msinsi we wish to state categorically that no such event will be held at Albert Falls Dam. We are a family resort and wish to disassociate ourselves from this advert. This is obviously the work of some prankster.” Attempts to track the “event organiser” were unsuccessful. Police spokesperson Jay Naicker said the police will investigate.

Residents unite to curb land invasion NALINI NAIDOO RESIDENTS from Woodlands, Chase Valley and Northdale are joining forces to tackle illegal land invasions in their suburbs. They will be joined by farmers in the Otto’s Bluff area whose trees have been chopped down. This follows the Msunduzi Munici pality’s failed bid last week to get the court to allow it to enforce an interdict to stop construction on the site. There was a great deal of anger after the court hearing and by Friday night, residents at an open air meetinginWoodlandswerereadytogo out into the bushes to defend their families. After a great deal of discussion, all present undertook to be careful of vigilantism and to act within the parameters of the law. They were told that Chase Valley residents would be meeting at Carter High School on Saturday afternoon and the group decided to send a delegation to that meeting. The meeting was chaired by Ward 25 councillor Dave Ryder. Chase Valley residents raised similar concerns to

counterparts in Woodlands and Northdale. It was then decided to join forces. Several options for a way for ward were discussed, including protest action. However, the first call was for representatives of the affected sub urbs to meet with Mayor Chris Ndlela. Some of the questions the residents want answered was why the municipality was not being more proactive in protecting its own land. And, why, if it got an interim interdict to stop the building of any more structures on the land, did it not do so. Residents said the municipality wanted to increase its rates base, yet it was well aware that an informal settlement in an area devalues proper ties. So it was in council’s own interest to control the situation. Ryder said that within him was an element of sympathy, as homeowners they could not imagine what it must be like not to have a house. “However, no matter what circum stances had driven the illegal occu pants to do what they were doing, they could not be allowed to break the law. If there is a lack of housing, then it is the municipality’s responsibility and solutions must be found,” he said. Residents who were at the meeting had learnt that someone was selling plots to people at R500 a piece and they wanted the municipality to inves tigate this. Ryder undertook to coordi nate the meeting.

MLONDI RADEBE

THE body of a Northdale man was found face down in a five-metredeep donga near the Olympia Weighbridge on Saturday. A passer-by discovered 48year-old Kenny “Lawyer” Pema’s body. His sister, Pam Pema, described him as a loving and caring brother. “The family will dearly miss him. He loved his family and supported them,” said Pam. Kenny worked at Preformed Line Products as a machine opera-

tor. Although the circumstances surrounding his death are still unclear, it is believed that he fell about five metres down the donga into the water on Saturday night. Residents next to the donga said they did not hear anything in the night. Acting station commander at the Mountain Rise police station, Colonel Chris Wiles, confirmed they have opened an inquest docket. Organisation denies ‘firing’ volunteers NQOBILE MTOLO

>>news@myecho.co.za

A

LOCAL nonprofit organization responsible for undertaking the Msunduzi cleanup campaign programme in some parts of the CBD has dismissed claims that it allegedly expelled some of its volunteers because of lack of funding. Two former volunteers from Sakhumnotho Development Services told the Echo that after working for the organization for months as volun teers, earning a monthly stipend of R1500, they have been given the boot. Both former volunteers spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimization. They both started working as volunteers last year. “We were told that we could not continue working there because they could not afford to pay us. One of the managers said that the Msunduzi Municipality had not paid them the administration fee and for that, they could not pay us. Sakhumnotho is basically blaming the municipality for what has happened. Sakhumnotho is supposed to develop the youth and not destroy them,” said the former volunteer. Department of Public Works spokesperson Mbulelo Baloyi said that the memorandum of agreement between the three parties started in April 2013 and was terminated on 31 March 2014. Baloyi said that the responsibility of the Department of Public Works was to pay the stipends of the beneficiaries for the duration of the contract period. Baloyi said that the contract has beenrenewedwiththebeneficiariesin this financial year, however he said that the supplied budget will only sustain all the 25 beneficiaries for a period of six months. “The department was not aware that there were beneficiaries who had been expelled from the programme as we committed to sustain all 25 for the next six months of this financial year.

We were only made aware that Sakhumnotho was failing to get hold of four beneficiaries, as the contracts that were signed this year totalled 21. “To date, we have only 21 benefici aries who are currently on site and have commenced the work. We were aware that Sakhumnotho is liaising with the ward councillors of those four beneficiaries to try and locate them. Once confirmation has been received from their respective ward councillors that they have exited the programme, then the process of sourcing replace ments will commence,” explained Baloyi. He said that the department has engaged with Sakhumnotho regard ing this inquiry and they have confirmed that no beneficiary was expelled from the programme. The founder of Sakhumnotho Development Services, Thokozani Gcaba, dismissed claims made by the two volunteers. He said that those who have left Sakhumnotho had found greener pastures. However, he said that he had told some of the volunteers to stay at home until they received adequate funding. “This has nothing to do with the municipality. They were not expelled. Currently, we are short staffed by four volunteers,” said Gcaba. Msunduzi’s deputy municipal manager for community services, Boniwe Zulu, said that Sakhumnotho was sanctioned to clean parts of the city and confirmed that the volunteer stipends were paid out by the Depart ment of Works. She said that the mu nicipality is not responsible for the allegedly sacked volunteers, adding that Sakhumnotho is responsible for the hiring process of volunteers. “The Msunduzi municipality is not responsible for what happened to the volunteers. Our partnership with the organization is to clean the city and for that we pay them an administration fee to cover the costs of running the organization on a monthtomonth basis,” she said.

ITH Women’s month celebrations continuing across the country, the Department of Correctional Services in KwaZulu-Natal took some time out last Thursday to celebrate women’s month with 500 female inmates at the YMCA sports grounds. Guest speaker, Education MEC in KwaZulu-Natal Peggy Nkonyeni, said: “While you are serving your jail sentenc-

es, we want you to know that wearenotjudgingyouasthere are situations that often lead people to commit different offences. “As a political leader, particularly in the education sector, I need to come up with a programme to develop these women. It should not only be about hand craft, but many otherskillsaswell, sothatthey are employable when they come out.” Nkonyeni further encouraged women to work together in building the nation.

Director of Correctional Services, Jabu Chonco, said that the struggle for women emancipation continues. “As women, we need to stand together against violence and abuse, particularly against female children. Violence amongst young girls is very high and according to research, every second a woman is raped in this country. In order to have future women leaders, we need to fight against cultures such as “ukuthwala” where young girls are abducted to marry.”

Msunduzi call centre in shambles NQOBILE MTOLO

>>news@myecho.co.za THE recent internal audit results for the Msunduzi Municipality call centre show that the centre is in a shambles. The findings reveal that customer complaints are not formally recorded and followed up, call centre operators do not always interpret and direct calls correctly resulting in delays and that the depot clerks do not promptly assign faults logged to the technicians. The functionality of the call centre is also not well understood by the depot clerks. These are some of the 11 findings for the call centre which were highlighted during the recent Municipal Public Accounts Committee (Mpac) meeting held at the city hall. Faults logged at the call centre are not resolved within stipulated time-frames and the database of attended queries is not up to scratch. Moreover, call centre agents do not always correctly interpret calls and information from the customers. The report states that the staff shortage at

the electricity department delays the attendance of other faults logged at the call centre. The audit on the call centre operations and management states that the call centre lacks proper management and that the system operators are in need of training to effectively and efficiently carry out their duties. BetweenAugust2011andApril2012,atotal of 12283 faults logged at the call centre were not resolved within a reasonable time. “With all the issues that the public have, be it account queries or electricity failures, whenever they try to get through to us they first call the call centre. “Whentheycomeacrossaproblemandthey do not get a proper reply from the call centre, that is when the frustration sets in,” said committee member Roger Ashe. Mpac chairperson Mike Tarr said that the call centre is the backbone of customer service and service delivery and its challenges need to be met head-on. “It is an important report and as a committee, we must get feedback on the implementation of this particular report,” he said.

HERE has been a spree of thefts at various museums in the city, resulting in precious historical items being stolen. The Msunduzi Museum recently discovered that twopreciousitemshadbeenstolenfromthemuseum premises a leopard skin which was on loan from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and an historical gold medal which has been part of the Museum collection since 1912. The medal was part of three others manufactured of different metals. They were specially manufac tured by jeweller J Sullivan, in commemoration of the historical event which took place on 16 December, 1838 between the Voortrekkers and amaZulu, and for the opening of what was then known as the Voortrekker Museum, 102 years ago.

PROFESSIONAL BAKERY COURSE Date: 30 - 31 August Time: 08h30 - 15h00 Venue: Kismet Hotel Price: R350 for both days

(includes recipes, meals and certificate of attendance) Content: bran muffins, scones, doughnuts, cupcakes, snowballs, sponge cakes (vanilla and chocolate), cheese cake, bar one, peppermint cake, caramel cake, black forest, birthday cake and wedding cake For bookings: sms/whatsapp your name and surname plus PMB to either 073 438 6758 or 079 158 6098. “The thief or thieves came in broad daylight, cleverly entered the locked display cases and closed them up again, moving items inside the cases so one didn’t notice that anything was amiss,” said Elrica Henning, head of research, information and collections at the museum. This is not the first time a theft has occurred at the museum. Earlier this year, a metal part of the 1824 year old ox wagon, exhibited in the E.G. Jansen extension, was stolen. “I don’t know what it could be used for or the mon etary value,” said Henning. The wagon is said to be one of the oldest in South Africa and one that was, in all likelihood, used by the Voortrekkers themselves. A breakin was also reported at Macrorie House recently, and rare coins and antique gold watches worth more than R200 000 were stolen while other valuables left untouched. “Our entire coin collection was targeted, along with a gold coin case and two gold pocket watches,” said museum curator, Roxanne Thomas. She believes the theft was conducted by private coin collectors to be sold or used for a private collec tion. Another theft that took place at the beginning of the year was the four Ormolu angels which were sto len from the Tatham Art Gallery (TAG). The angels arepartoftheOrmoluclockwhichisoneofTAG’smost prized possessions and one of the pieces that attract ed the most visitors and international tourists in par ticular. A case has been opened at the Loop Street Police Station. Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact Elrica Henning at 033 394 6834 or email eolivier@msunduzimuseum.org.za

Bodybuilder wins champs AMIL UMRAW

H

ARD work and perseverance have paid off for a plucky Pietermaritzburg fireman. Kiran Singh (28) took first place in the disabled division of the INBA Bodybuilding Championship in Randburg recently. Singh lost his leg in a horrific hit-and-run accident on Field’s Hill two years ago. He was riding his motorbike when he was struck by a car that sped away, leaving him on the road in a pool of blood. Due to the severity of the injury, his leg had to be amputated above the knee. At the time, members of the public came together along with local organisations to raise funds for his prosthesis. Since the incident, he has been training vigorouslyatalocalgym, withoutlettinghis prosthetic leg get in the way of his passion. He said the past two years have been a “terrible struggle” because living and working with a prosthesis is difficult, but bodybuilding has kept him sane in that time. “I have found a higher calling after my experience. I believe that God brought me back for a reason and that reason is to inspire others,” Singh said. Due to his placement in the competition last month, he has been chosen to represent South Africa on an international stage at the 17th annual Natural OlympiainSanDiego,California, in November later this year. “Winning the INBA championship was a surreal experience. I’m looking forward to representing my country and doing my community proud. All I can say to other aspiring athletes is that you should never give up. Dreams are real if you want them to be,” he said.

N a bid to promote dialogue and understanding around youth leadership for public innovation in South Africa, Activate Youth Network on Saturday hosted a dialogue at Umgungundlovu FET College where young people gathered to discuss issues of identity and leadership.

Varsity College Pietermaritzburg recently hosted their annual open day. Students had the opportunity to be exposed to different aspects of the student experience and interact with various faculty members and lecturers. One of the prizes up for grabs was an iPad and handing it over to the winner, Mandisa Mucasso from Russell Girls High School (R) is (from left) campus principal Kevin McShane and Delisile Mucasso.

Under the theme: “Identity and true leadership finds strength in similarities and differences”, young peoplesharedideasonwhatidentity means to them. Marketing and Communications Manager of Activate Leadership Pipper Hetherington said: “South Africa’s potential to become a great country will only be realised when we find leadership that recognizes

the strength in our similarities and differences. The dialogue is aimed at drawing together young people and thought leaders from civil society, as well as government and business, to explorewaysinwhichpositivesocial change may be brought back. “The questions that were asked were:Whoarewe, howdoweunderstand ourselves in this place, time and context.” Dr Fikile Ndlovu, a panellist, said that someone’s identity is defined from the inside. “As South Africans, we need to stop being defined by the media, we needtodefineourselves,”sheended. One of the participants, Nkosinathi Nxumalo said he gained a lot from the dialogue, saying that he now understands the importance of having different identities. “The dialogue was about acknowledging our differences so that we can be able to accommodate one another. Irrespective of race and religion, it is also important to have a common vision so that this country can have a positive future.”

OCAL teacher, published author and overall hidden treasure, Mzi Mngadi, will be releasing his ninth novel to the public in October this year. He currently teaches isiZulu at Sobantu Secondary School and has been there since 1982. In his career, he has published one English and seven isiZulu novels, one of which has been assigned to the curriculum as a set book until the end of 2015. Speaking to Echo, Mngadi said that he was an athlete when he was younger, passionate about ultra-distance running. He received two silver medals both times that he competed in the Comrades Marathon, and participated in many other races. However the intensity of distance running took its toll on his body and forced him to give up competing when his injuries set in. “At one point I was placed fifth nationally in running but my legs gave up on me. Fortunately, I had teaching to fall back on and I love it,” he said. He said that he always felt he had the ability to write novels and one day he decided to put it into action. “I was always passionate about literature studies. I knew that I had understood the science of writing fiction, therefore I applied it and it was successful.” Mngadi has received many awards for his writing, however

Mzi Mngadi is a teacher at Sobantu Secondary School but is also an ac complished author. when asked which was the most precioustohimhesaidthatitwasthe P.W Vilakazi award for literature studies. He said that this was the highest honour for him. “You must be a reader to be able to write. You must read and then learn through other people and their style of writing. “In this way, you get to know the rules that need to be followed in

particular genres,” said Mngadi. His first script was a musical which was performed at the Winston Churchill Theatre earlier this year. His second script, which he is in the process of writing, will be performed in Zimbabwe and speaks to the political struggle in Rhodesia. “I feel that I’m blessed. God blessed me with the art of writing and it changed my life,” said Mngadi.

Netcare St Anne’s recently held a National Renal Day awareness campaign in the hospital to keep people informed about the seriousness of kidney illness. According to the National Kidney Foundation of South Africa, most people are not aware of this potentially devastating condition, how it is caused and how to reduce the risk of developing it. Pictured at the awareness day are Diana Warren (L) Healthy Start Practitioner from National Renal Care and Evashna Moodley, Netcare St Anne’s High Care administrator.

RECENTLY covered the ‘Eskom Expo For Young Scientists -North Coast’ regional finals, heldattheUniversityofZululand.Ihad beenlookingforwardtotheeventsinceNovember last year. Needlesstosay,Iwasveryhappyitwasfinally happening. When I first learned of it, I was surpriseditexistedatall.Yousee, lastyearIwas running up and down eSikhawini (my hometown)tryingtoestablisha scienceorganisation to host a science fair for the schools in the 'loxion' to participate in. That venture has yet to bear fruit but I will continue trying. Now, my anticipation for the science fair I attended that day, my very first, quickly soured as I wentthroughthemany project displays. Whilst quite a number of projects impressed me, there weren’t enoughofthem, particularly from previously disadvantaged schools. Look, I was not expecting to see perpetual motion machines or someone disproving the General Theory of Relativity, but I was looking forward to projects that showed some real scientific prowess. For example, one project consisted ofaseriesof“failed”experimentswhereapair of young scientists tried to show the effect of music on the growth of fungi. Their project display was splashed with theirmanyattempts attryingtoprovethatdubstep made fungi grow faster when compared to classicalmusic.Theyhadnosuchluck.Yousee, science is not about being right, it is about tryingtofindatruthinasystematicwayandsometimes this takes great perseverance, a quality these two young scientists displayed. It was quite sad to see how a lot of the substandard projects were from “previously disadvantaged schools” (a euphemism for rural and township schools that were denied proper laboratories because the African child had “no business learning maths and science”). To be fair a number of them were not science projects at all, but instead they were cut-n-

paste inserts from the internet and did not ask or answer any scientific questions as required. It may be the awkward nerd in me, but I found this incredibly sad. The science fair is a great initiative and a veryimportant eventinanyyoungscientistand engineer's life, which I believe could make or break the idea of science at the early stage. Not all of us will become scientists but I believe that it is important to have a community of individuals who understand and appreciate the scientific method. I think this makes us better people who are also less ignorant and more open minded. Wouldn’t it just be a better world if we were all scientifically literate? Anyway, when 1994 ushered in the new democratic regime, a new education system was introduced so that a pupil in kwaDlangezwa and another in Arboretum study the same chemistry becausetheyarenowboth considered equal. It seems that this is not the case. You see, it took centuries to re-enforce the idea that African pupils are less inclined to understand science and mathematics in the minds or the township schools’ pupils and teachers alike. We must also admit, however, that science and mathematics is not yet seen as a viable career path for many parents to advise their children to pursue. And while we might complain (rightfully) that pupils at township schools are at a disadvantage - though we say “previously”- it is still uptocommunities(parents, teacherstheSGBs) to take science and mathematics education seriously. This column should also serve as my antiprocrastination effort at not being another nay-sayer who sees “the problem” and does not propose a solution. My intention is to work with schools in communities such as in eSikhawini with their science fair entries for the coming year. Hopefully, thiswillbeoneofmanyinitiatives I will be involved in, in terms of improving science education in our so-called township and rural schools. Interested? Call me. I would be more than happy to see how and where I can help.

IS love for writing poems is what pushed him to start writing hip hop music. His name is Nicol Nhlabathi, better known by his stage name of Sjwimza. The Peacevalley hip hop singer sees his career paying off. Nhlabathi has shared the stage with Zakes Bantwini,Speedy,Zahara,KhuliChana(hisinspi ration) and BigNuz and is looking forward to his second album which will be released in October. “Mostly my music tells people about life. My songs tell stories. My music is suitable for all ages and is also radio friendly, since it contains no vulgar language. This will be my second album. My first album did very well Some still want it for their cd collections. I believe that this one will do much better due to the availability and im provement of promotional material,” said Nhla bathi. I want to start by saluting all the women out there, women of all ages. I’m proud to be living in South Africa, a country with so many opportunities and rights that have been granted to women. I’m certain that the women of 1956 are pleased with how far we have come and are celebrating with us. To the female street vendors, mothers at home struggling, women in abusive relationships, the female pupil who goes to school with an empty stomach, I want to assure you of this you are strong because you are a woman and you will make it far because you are a woman. Happy Women’s month.

NQOBILE MTOLO Fever reporter As a woman I am not portrayed by my age and weight. Being a woman means that you need to know and appreciate who you are as a human being, despite what the world forces you to be. Being a woman goes be yond our physical DNA, our genitals, makeup, handbags and lingerie. It means being comfortable in your own skin and not trying hard to please selfless people by being what you are not. Being a woman means respect ing life and everything God created. If there is one thing they cannot take away Follow Nqobile from you, it is who you are.

I read something the other day that really struck a chord with me. “Women need real moments of solitude to bal ance out how much of ourselves we give away”. I think that should be what women’s month is all about. Tak ing the time to reflect on how fantastic it is to be a women and how we have so much to offer society and those around us. It should also be a celebration of all the strong women we know in our lives and be used to think about how we can be come positive role models for the next @Cherylmoig generation of women.

Students and other volunteers attended a workshop prior to the games to get a full understanding of the Special Olympics. The day included the history of the Special Olympics, how it began and the heart of it. Each sport was explained as well as what the athletes do. In order for the athletes to qualify, their IQ has to be below 70. The Special Olympics was held over four days

which included the opening ceremony, divisionals, nationals and the closing ceremony. The volunteers were required to do time keeping, recording, food distribution, being a runner and refereeing table tennis. All students were qualified and trained for their positions, keeping it professional at all times. The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience as for most of them, it was their first time being with this calibre of athlete. They learnt a lot about how people with disabilitiesliveandwereencouragedatthesametime because these people aren’t excluded in life.

Women’s day is a celebration of the freedom we have today, fought for by great woman many years ago. What we as the women of this generation, as well as future generations, should do is strive to be great woman. All we must do is stay phenomenal. Be ing a great woman means being beautiful inside, loving and caring for others. As a woman you must never lose your identity, never let any one take advantage of you or make you think less of yourself because you are important, you are beautiful no matter who says what. As this is the last week of our month, I say keep calm and beautiful and fear the Lord and you will be celebrated everyday of the year.

OUR primary schools in PMB have been given eight maths and science kits to the value of R160 000bytheWillowtonGroup,whichhas its roots in Pietermaritzburg. The principals and teachers of Alston, Berg Street, Allandale and Greenhill were excited to receive the comprehensive Edutrade CAPS-compliant resources for the benefit of their 3 300 pupils. The kits will be used by pupils from Grade four upwards, to provide a solid grounding of science and maths at each grade as they approach matric.

“We are strong believers in investing in our local communities and will follow the progress of the pupils at these nearby schools with interest,” said Abdul Razak Moosa, Willowton’s chief executive. Moosa is confident that the kits will be used correctly and play a major role in improving maths and science performances at these schools. A further R500 000 will be spent on the latest CAPS-compliant physical sciencekitsfor20schoolsintheUmlazi district as part of a new eThekwini Municipality initiative.

Not for the faint hearted

The initiative was triggered by the poor performance of South African pupilsintheareasofmathsandscience as revealed in an international survey by the World Economic Forum this year which placed South Africa last in a ranking of 148 countries. “The Willowton Group is proud to be one of the pioneers of this initiative. “We see this as an investment in the pupils who will become our country’s technical leaders of the future and an investment in the economic growth of our country,” said Moosa.

ECONDS after Grade 11 pupil from St John Paul II High School, Nomusa Shelembe, was announced the first winner of the PMB leg of the KZN Premier Spelling Bee competition, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. “I am so excited and I was not expecting to win. I have been studying the

words since schools closed for the June holidays. From this competition, I have learned new words and I have gained great confidence,” said Shelembe in complete shock, with tears of joy streaming down her face. St John Paul School is in Elandskop, 45 minutes outside of Pietermaritzburg. The Pietermaritzburg KZN Premier Spelling Bee competition was held this past Saturday at the Eastwood community hall. There were a total of 69 entries received, and 37 schools which participated. As soon as Shelembe was announced the winner, correctlyspellingthewordthatrunneruppupilMzolisi Zulu from Fundokuhle Secondary School had spelt incorrectly, Shelembe’s teachers Thembelani Zuma and Nokuphila Ndlovu ran on stage to congratulate her. “We are very excited and so proud of the two pupils who represented our school. The fact that one of our pupilswonisacherryontop.Itwasagreatcompetition but challenging. It gave our children great exposure as to what they can expect next year,” said Zuma. Shelembe won a R6000 cash prize, a trophy and certificate, a box of books, a Gem voucher, a Spar voucher as well as Comrades Marathon goodies. Her school won books. Runnerup

Cool, calm and collected, Siphesihle Cele from Siqongweni High School, won the bonus round. For the bonus round, Cele took home a R5000 cash prize, a medal and a certificate. Pietermaritzburg’s KZN Premier Spelling Bee second and third place contestants Andiswa Hlengwa (L) and Mzolisi Zulu.

Earlier that day, not even the chilly morning winds could stop the participants from being excited about the competition. The participants, dressed in their respective school uniforms, basked in the sun while they went over the challenging words one last time, minutes before the competition started. Emcee for the day, Celeste Hadlow, helped release the stress by encouraging everyone to stand up and dance. Judges for the day were Maritzburg Fever and Echo local community titles editor Bridget Siebert, Eastwood Secondary School teacher Barbra Saul and general manager for Media24 Local Newspapers (KZN) Neil Tapinos. “As expected, the Pietermaritzburg leg of the KZN Premier Spelling Bee did not disappoint and we are grateful to our partners for helping to make the day a success. Pupils in this part of KZN exude confidence and they had obviously swatted hard for the competition,” said Tapinos. Maritzburg Fever, Echo Edendale and Maritzburg Echo would like to thank all its sponsors Via Afrika, Spar, Rotary International, Gem Schoolwear, Comrades and Msunduzi Museum for a successful event. More photos from the event can be seen at www.echopmb.co.za.

FOOTBALListheonlydiscipline where everyone is an “expect”. We all have solutions and knowhow of what our teams need to do. Although we never train teams, we know thebeststartingline-up,effectivetactical strategy and the best system for our team. I wish all of us, whether nurses, police or councillors, were scrutinised as much as football players and coaches. Football coaches, unlike other professionals, are expected to be perfect. Clive Barker, winning coach of the Nations Cup in 1996, said that a fan’s team never loses because it does not compete. Football coaching is a lonely job. It is difficult to understand why people stay in this job for a very long time. This is a job that demands discipline. You have to stay a scholar for the rest of your life. We have a situation where all pupils fail Grade 12, for example, but teachers retain their jobs. Coaches sometimes are judged on a single fixture by the fans. Generally, top athletes work very hard in preparation for competition. Footballers are not an exception to this rule. Talent is just a starting point. It is impossible to reach the highest levels

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA

A lonely job without making lots of personal sacrifices. You need professional competency to be signed either by Kaizer Chiefs or Real Madrid. It does not help to have a connected father or uncle in this business. Football has many interesting lessons for other professions and life in general. Patience is one of the most important traits needed in this business. Imagineatopgoalkeeperwhohastosit on the bench the whole season. Coaches are not always reluctant to rotate goalkeepers. It is not easy to maintain high motivation in training if playing opportunities are scarce.

While in other jobs money may be the most important thing, in football, players get satisfaction out of their performances. Injuries are part of the package in football. Sometimes after a draining pre-season, a footballer gets injured in the last practice match. It is hell going through many months attending physiotherapy sessions and other medical treatment. The growth of a football career depends on opportunities to play. A player needs to perform to attract the attention of bigger clubs and for national team selection. So, it is important that fans accord our footballers some respect. We must understand that no player gets into the match with the intention of losing. It is a fact of life that things will not always go smoothly. Mistakes are a sign that people are trying hard. Cheer them up! Give support unconditionally! We all need opportunities and support to succeed. Unzima lo mthwalo!

WO new special edition models from Chevrolet will soon be offering customers value and exclusivity. The black and white models, availa ble in limited numbers, boast sporty upgrades and enhanced specifications. “Chevrolet is well known for offering great value to our customers and we are confident that with these distinct special versions, with exclusivity and additional standard features, we will delight Chevrolet buyers,” said General Motors South Africa’s Chevrolet brand manager Tim Hendon. “The modifications on the Spark black and white edition have been developed by our local engineers, and are factoryapproved and fitted for peace of mind,” added Hendon. Based on the popular Chevrolet Sonic 1.6 LS fivedoor hatchback, the new Sonic black and white edition is available as a limited run of 200 units, in “carbon flash black” or “snowflake white pearl”, with side mirrors and the rear spoiler painted in a contrast ing “orange rock”. Valueadding standard features include Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system and black 16inch alloy wheels. The new Chevrolet Spark black and white edition is based on the midrange Spark 1.2 LS. Available ex clusively in “thunder flash black” or a “Athenian white” in a limited run of 300 units, the Spark black and white edition features the addition of black 15 inch alloy wheels, contrasting black or white decals, light titanium upholstery, glossy black interior detail ing, sports pedals, stainless steel door sill plates, unique side skirts and an exterior chrome detail pack age. The Spark and Sonic black and white editions come standard with Chevrolet’s five year/120 000km warranty and roadside assistance plan. MASERATI brought its past, present and future to life in celebrating the marque’s 100th birthday at the Monterey Car Week in California recently. As the featured marque at Pebble Beach’s Concours d’Elegance, the celebration was stylish, reminding petrolheads of the same event in 1968, when a Maserati Mistral Coupé took top honours as best of show. Coming back to the present, the lawn at this Concours d’Elegance was packed with examples of Maserati’s rich history, including — in the Maserati Centennial Racing Class — a 1954 A6GCS Spyder, a 1955 Maserati 250F Monoposto, and a 1956 Maserati 300S Fantuzzi Spyer. The 1954 A6GCS took the trophy for best gran turismo, noted for its artistic beauty and high level of performance.

One of the most fascinating cars of all time, designed by Pininfarina in 1954, the A6GCS proved a valuable source of inspiration for the designers of today’s Alfieri concept. This highly acclaimed concept made its North American debut during a special centennial celebration at the Mazda Raceway during the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion, where Maserati was also the honoured marque. Lorenzo Ramacioitti, head of Fiat Chrysler Automobile Global Design, presented the stunning concept, saying “this car has a racing breed, but with a kick of poetry. The new Alfieri also made a star turn on the concept lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It was a birthday party worthy of a century.

MORE than 20 000 of the sixth generation Isuzu KB have been sold since the vehicle’s launch in March last year. Following on the success of this model, Isuzu now offers a more exclusive variant - the Midnite Edition KB 300 double cab - with only 500 units being produced. “The new addition continues Isuzu’s heritage of special models in South Africa. Limited edition vehicles are part of Isuzu’s DNA in our country, and the new Midnite Edition has the looks and appeal to attract attention on the road and set its owners apart from the rest,” said Mlungisi Nonkonyana, brand manager for General Motors South Africa. “Special design and engineering development by our local team has resulted in a truly desirable bakkie, built just for South Africans, and with limited production of 500 units we expect our passionate followers to receive it enthusiastically.” Painted exclusively in red, white or metallic silver, the exterior of the Midnite Edition is enhanced by a classic black theme from bumper to bumper. At the front, a specialised black bumper guard adds larger-than-life attitude and is complemented by a black radiator grille.

The classic black treatment continues on the flanks with black mirror caps, roof-rails, side-steps, window-surrounds and black 17inch alloy wheels, while at the rear a standard tow bar sits beneath a black rear bumper. The special design changes are finished off by a black sports-bar behind the cab, complete with special decals and branded door sill plates. Each vehicle receives a special plaque with the unit’s unique number engraved on it, indicating which of the 500 special edition units it is. The interior is further distinguished by special Midnite Edition carpets. Three Midnite Edition models are available, each of which is powered by Isuzu’s proven 3.0-litre D-TEQ diesel engine with 130kW and 380Nm on tap. Customers can choose between a five-speed manual, a fivespeed automatic transmission with a 4x2 drivetrain, or 4x4 with a manual gearbox only. As with the rest of the Isuzu KB range, this model carries a five-year/120 000km warranty and a five-year/90 000km service plan, with service intervals scheduled every 15 000km. The Isuzu KB Midnite Edition which will be on sale in late September. - Supplied.

Zuma believes a good start and a solid foundation for the new season is likely to secure them a good position at the end of the season. “Our good start means we are on the right track. ARITZBURG United are currently one of the best teams to watch in the league and seem to have turned the Harry Gwala stadium into a slaughter house for their opponents. The Team of Choice head coach, Steve Komphela, seems to be the factor behind the recent success and the whole side look to be prepared to play for him.
