FTER a seven–year battle, KZN Capital 104 FM will finally go on air next month. To celebrate their victory, the station held a prayer session with different religious leaders at its new premises in Langalibalele street last Friday. It will share offices with Minettes Memorials at number 152 Langalibalele Street. The station was granted a broadcasting licence by Icasa in 2010, and had been battling to find a venue. It was supposed to be based

at the Golden Horse Casino, but it was changed after new management took over, and decided that they would no longer be able to accommodate the station. StationmanagerJerryJonessaid that under the theme: ‘Your Channel ofChoice’,thestationwillstartgoing on air with promotions and music as of next month. He said that the officialbroadcastingwillstartnextyear. Expressing his excitement, he said: “It took us seven years to be where we are today. There was a time where we had been promised that we would use the Golden Horse casino, only to be told we can't. This station is for the whole community and we will embrace different cultures. There is also a slot for God’ word, and that is why we start by thanking him before any-

thing else”. He further thanked Neville Teggs of Minettes Memorials who has donated the venue to them. Director of the Midlands Christian Council, Reverend Simphiwe Manqokontsi, said: “We appreciate their vision of serving the Midlands as a diverse station. We also appreciate that they have called for a prayer before doing anything. We will pray for sponsorship, influence, expansion and education. We hope that it will not only focus on negative stories, but also the many positive things around the city”.

IYAYA Cash and Carry employees are finally back at work after a three week shutdown by the municipality, allegedly for not complying with fire regulations. They say that they have been

OBANTU residents are demanding a new bridge. This follows the incident of a man whose car was swept off the Woodhouse low–level bridge a week ago. Thedriverofthecar,LihleMthiyane (36) from Scottsville, was found at the Grimthorpe Road low–level bridge on Friday, six days after he went missing. Whentheincidentoccurred, hewas in the company of three young women whom he had managed to save. Last Thursday, the Themba Njilo

said that this happens every time there is a heavy storm. “Council has stalled the building of the bridge as they claimed that they needed to do an environmental assessment before proceeding with the project, depite many people using the bridge to go to work,” said Matiwane. Msunduzi municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma that they are considering closing the road in the meantime. “We will then build a pedestrian bridge so that people who need to cross the river have access until such time that we have a permanent solution for the challenge”.

Domestic wages go up next month >> Minimum wages will be increased in time for Christmas BERNARD REISNER

I

N terms of the Sectoral Determination for the domestic worker sector, minimum wages for domestic workers in urban municipal areas are to be increased by 7.6% as from 1 December, 2013 and will remain applicable until 30 November, 2014. The minimum wage increases in the rural municipal areas are to be increased by 8.6%. Theseincreaseswillelicitmixedreactionsfrom

employers of domestic workers and from domestic workers themselves. Certain employers may feel that they can no longer afford to retain the services of a domestic worker, while the domestic workers may feel that the increase is nominal and that it will not alleviate their struggle to meet their financial commitments. They will continue to strive for a living wage which they have been doing since the promulgation of this Act in 2002.

Residents urged to lend a hand >> A party for needy children is planned

EVERY CHILD DESERVES TO BE LOVED AND TO ENJOY THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS, WHICH I BE LIEVE IS “LOVE AND GIVING” NOMPENDULO NGUBANE >>nompendulo.ngubane@mye cho.co.za

R

esidents of Pietermaritzburg have been urged to donate towards the underprivileged children’s Christmas party to be hosted by the District Community chest on 5 December. Five hundred and five underprivileged children will be invited to enjoy the spirit of Christmas at the Golden Horse Casino, according to Community Chest fundraising manager Angie Narayanan. Shesaidthattheyarecallingon families, companies and business people to step in and make this year’s party a success for the children. “Your donation in cash or in anykindwouldbegreatlyappreciated. The Christmas party started with Toy Story and East Coast Radio. Back then it was held at the Royal Showground where thousands of underprivileged children enjoyed the season of love,” said Narayanan. It then moved to John Dory’s at the Golden Horse Casino.

“Kids enjoyed meals, gifts and each child even received a stack of tokens to enjoy at the game world in the casino”, she said. Narayanan said thereafter, it moved to the infields of the Golden Horse Casino, adding that children are picked up from their areas by Maharaj coaches, enjoy meals, sweets, party pack, gifts from Santa and a clown. “Every child deserves to be loved and to enjoy the true meaning of Christmas, which I believe is “love and giving”. And in that spirit, why should a child, especially the ones living in the rural areas, be deprived of this,” she asked. According to Narayanan. it’s an amazing day fulled with the laughter of children being on the bus for the first time or sometimes seeing the Golden Horse Casino for the first time. “I am humbly grateful to the Golden Horse Casino and all supporters, aswellasdonors, who get on board to make this day a special one for special children,” said Narayanan. Those who wish to donate can contact Narayanan at 033 394 1031 or 073 907 3637..

Having multiple partners which is fuelled by alcohol abuse and drug addiction continues to be a serious threat to societal well-being because reinfection (or getting the virus again and again) occurs when people engage in unprotected sex.Ifapersonwhohasbeen shot at with many bullets has greater chances of dying, why would allowing the virus to enter your body repeatedly, especially from different people, not eventually kill you? Drugs, alcohol and increased social alienation due to poverty and unemployment are directly related to raping old people, children and defenseless women, and that creates fertilegroundforthespreadof HIV and subsequent Aids deaths. Our country, particularly KZN, is reported to be experiencing a high level of teenage pregnancy and this is a sure sign that condom use is not necessarily as successful as statistics would haveusbelieveeventhough awareness campaigns are abundant and sustained.

Community-based interventions involving government, NGOs, NPOs, international donor community, business are bringing hope. I am thinking here of such interventions as the Community Care Givers (CCGs) who are taking care of the needs of people infected and adversely affected by HIV and Aids, e.g. meeting the basic needs of children and youths who do not have caregivers, includingprovidingfood, school, health, recreational as well as spiritual needs. It is interventions like these that make me want to take my hat off to the democratic government that is now turning 20 for implementing the Home & Community Based Care concept. This is about reaching out to people, (especially in rural communities), who are affected and infected by HIV and Aids, with basic needs, including social grants that stabilize their lives. When you read that ‘there are estimated over 1,5 million orphans in South Africa,” many of whom are going without food and basic necessities, there is a reason to be concerned. Over half of these orphans are caused by HIV and Aids related deaths. ANXA izichazamazwi zesiNgisi zilichaza ngezindlela ezahlukene igama elithi ‘patriotism’, ngizithola zilichaza ngokuthi lisho: “Ukuthanda nokuzinikela ezweni lakini”. Ngizitshela ukuthi uma ngithanda izwe lakithi, iNingizimu Afrika, kufanele ngizame konke okusemandleni ukuthi ngibambe iqhaza ekulithuthukiseni. Ngizitshela ukuthi uma uthuthukisa izwe lakini, awakuwazi ukushiya ngaphandle abantu abayiminsinsi yokuzimilela entweni oyenzayo. Siyazi-ke ukuthi lezi zinxushunxushu ebezikhungethe iNingizimu Afrika eminyakeni eminingi edlule,

nezisekhona kwezinye izindawo, zidalwa ngabantu abasho ngomlomo ukuthi bayayithanda iNingizimu Afrika nokuthi bangayifela nokuyifela, kodwa izenzo zabo zibe zisho okunye. Izizwe eziningi zangaphandle kweNingizimu Afrika zihlale zibangisana ngokuzozinza kuleli, hhayi ngoba zithanda iNingizimu Afrika, kodwa zithanda ingcebo yakhona. Umcebo waseNingizimu Afrika uhlanganisa nabantu bakhona, akuwona umcebo ombiwa ezimayini kuphela. INingizimu Afrika, phakathi kokuningi, izishaya isifuba ngokuba namaqhawe afana noDkt. Nelson Rohlihlahla Mandela. Akekho

ongaphika ukuthi leli qhawe lingelinye lalawo anyakazise umhlaba wonke. Akekho ongaphika futhi ukuthi leli qhawe liyohlale likhunjulwa, lihlonishwa kuze kuthi AMEN. Angaphika othandayo ngoba yilungelo lakhe lelo. Yingakho incwadi ethi: “Long Walk To Freedom” yaphela ngokuphazima kweso emva kokushicilelwa, yaze yahunyushelwa nakwezinye izilimi. Udinga ukwethulelwa isigqoko uDkt D.B.Z. Ntuli owayihumushela olimini lwesiZulu ukuze umlando waleli qhawe ufinyelele nakulabo abangaluqondisisi olwendlovukazi yamaNgisi. Osekudida abaningi manje, okusempeleni okucasula abaningi

kuhlangene nombhali walolu daba, ukuthi uma sonke thina baseNingizimu Afrika sithi siyalithanda izwe lethu futhi singalifela njengaye uMadiba, yini edala ukuthi uma sekwenziwa ifilimu yebhayisikobho ngempiloyakhe, kulandweabalingisi bangaphandle. Workshops for local artists ahead of ‘Big Fish’ festival >>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

I

N gearing up up for the Sipho ‘Big Fish’ Makhabane gospel festival this Saturday, aspiring local artists had an opportunity of a lifetime as they spent two days with the gospel legend. They got valuable information on how to carry themselves as artists, among other things. The workshops, organised by uMgungundlovu district municipality in partnership with the Umgungundlovu Arts and Culture Council, were aimed at developing local talent and also teaching aspiring artists on how to make a living out of their music careers. Addressing artists, Makhabane said that although the city has so much talent, city artists have to work harder as there are very few who have made strides in the music industry. “Many artists make the mistake of wanting to record before they are even ready. They succumb to pressure, especially those who sing gospel. Before they can even start pursuing a career in the music industry, they must be able to establish whether they are singers or song writers and

do not do everything by themselves,” he said. Makhabane said that artists die poor because they are scared to talk about their rights. “Music is not just for entertainment but is a career. This is another mistake made by gospel artists, they perform in churches and events and are scared to ask for payment because they feel as Christians, it is not the right thing to do.God gave you the talent to use it to make a living. Stand up for your rights as an artist. It isgoodtoblessthechurch, butitmustalsobless you”. Makhabane further encouraged artists to read thoroughly, or ask for assistance, before signing recording deals, as they are easily exploited. The festival, which will take place at Woodburn stadium, is aimed at praying for safety during this festive season, against social ills and to also commemorate the lives of those who have passed on due to HIV and Aids. Artists who will be performing include Sfiso Ncwane, Pastor Ncanda, Thina Zungu, Israel Mosehla, Jabu Ngcobo, Mvuselelo Buthelezi, Babo and Sgwili, Donny, Nduduzo Matse, Nathi and Nkanyiso, Andile ka Majola, Dumi Mkokstad, Buhle, Mthoko Zakwe, France Dlamini, Melusi Nzimane and local talent. Tickets are R80 at Computicket and R100 at the gates.

HE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has embarked on a voter education campaign at tertiary institutions to attract the youth, especially first time voters, KwaZulu–Natal IEC spokesperson Thabani Ngwira, said social networks such as Twitter and Facebook have also been used as a tool to convey and encourage the youth to take part in next year’s elections. TheSchoolsDemocracyprogrammewasalso launched last month, jointly with the departments of Education and Home Affairs and was conducted by the IEC staff in classrooms. “TheDepartmentofHomeAffairswasavailable to assist pupils to apply for their identity documents. Our records show that only nine percent of youth between the age of 18 and 19 are registered as voters. It is difficult to predict how many young voters will vote but we are expecting them to come out in their numbers. Campaigns by political parties also assist to

create a mood of excitement and interest in the election. They are focusing on youth and first time voters as well,” said Ngwira. First time voter Thembelani Zondi said he will be taking part in next year’s election because he believes that his vote is important. “I will be voting so that I will have a say in my country and be exposed to opportunities as a young person. By voting, I will be giving my voice to the political party that I will be voting for,” he said. “My vote will make a difference and by voting, I will be making that difference to my community and my country,” said Cebo Madlala. SabeloZondisaidhecannotcriticiseanyone or any political party if he has not voted. “My vote is my right, and by putting that X sign on the ballot paper, I will be exercising my democratic right”. “Voting gives ownership and as young people, we should have that ownership by voting. I won’t miss a chance to exercise it,” said first time voter Nhlanhla Xaba.

The provincial registration statistics show that 620 864 registered at voting stations on the weekend of 9 and 10 November, that is according to the total numbers provided by the IEC. The 283 407 were new registrations and 267 572 were people who were already registered, but were changing their details on the roll because they have moved to a different voting district. Gauteng province was the second highest with 572 395 new and re–registered voters for next year’s general elections. Mosery said that KZN recorded the highest voter turnout duringtheregistrationweekend, followedby Gauteng.

Pirates deserve more: Roger De Sa >> He believes it’s time for the club to start collecting

HE recent Caf Champions League runners-up, and this year’s Telkom Knockout (TKO) finalist Orlando Pirates, are a big team, well followed and only designed to win gold. Pirates head coach, Roger De Sa says from now on, his club’s cabinet will only have space for gold medals. He said that besides being a big, well supported team, Bucs boast a long and rich history and don’t deserve to always

The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and Bidvest Wits mentor bravely, and surprisingly, said that his team will only go for gold in the forthcoming TKO finals against Platinum Stars on December 7. De Sa was speaking after histeamcamebackfrombehind 1-0 to win the TKO semi final against SuperSport United last Saturday. “This team is not just one of the oldest and biggest in the country, but deserve to win big things Ourfollowers

Jali in contract talks with Pirates after rumours of transfer ORLANDO Pirates have confirmed thattheyareengagedincontracttalks with Andile Jali and are pouring cold water on speculation that the midfielder may switch his allegiance to another club. Jali’s contract runs until the end of June 2014, and Mamelodi Sundowns are among those linked with a move for the Bafana Bafana man. It is also believed that ‘AJ15’ might opt for a move to an overseas club. Following his impressive form that has seen him playing a key role in helping Pirates qualify for the Telkom Knockout, Pirates have now stepped up efforts to tie the player down for a few more seasons. “Yes, we are holding contract talks with Andile Jali,” Pirates spokesperson Mickey Modisane tells KickOff.com. “I am not able to give you the details of the actual discussions. This willemergeasthediscussionscontinue.Besides, we are focusing on our League match against Maritzburg United on Wednesday [yesterday] and we do not want any distractions going into that game.” Pirates will be hoping to secure the signature of the midfielder soon. In January, the player will be entitled to sign a pre-contract with another club. Jali’s agent, Mike Makaab, has previously opted not to reveal the player’s intentions to KickOff.com. –Farirayi Kahwemba

Khenyeza case postponed again THEcaseinvolvingthePSL,SafaandMpumalanga Black Aces striker Mabhuti Khenyeza has been postponed until a later date – again.

The League had initially banned Khenyeza for 12 months for allegedly spitting at a match official while still on the books of Ajax Cape Town. However, heappealedthedecisionandgottheban overturned to only an effective R25 000 fine. But the League then in turn appealed the decision withtheSafaappeals’aboard, withPSLCEOBrand de Villiers saying that they “weren’t happy at the League with the outcome”. The case was meant to sit on Monday but it has been postponed due to Safa’s inability to find an arbitrator. It’s the latest in a spate of postpone ments which have prevented the case from reach ing a conclusion.

SA football needs everyone of this country in the football fields. Personally, I benefited tremendously from men like Henry Mhlongo, Phillip “Uncle” Ndlovu and many others who cared about us. I doubt if the majority of us realises that South Africa is our country. Presently, it seems as if the important question is what can this country do for me? We are always looking at how life can serve us instead of the opposite. They say charity begins at home. How do we expect the country to advance if parents would rather buy alcohol instead of food for their own children? How does it help us to fill churches on Sundays when the youth are dying of drugs and alcohol? How do we claim to love our country when we leave patients dying in hospital and pupils loitering in the classrooms? Is it possible to volunteer your services when you are cheating the system in your place of employment? I salute men and women who spend their free time serving others. This is what South African football requires. Presently, it is more about free tickets, free lunches and hotel rooms. Our boys and girls deserve better than we are doing presently. Let us start dirtying our hands to help our country progress. Unzima lo mthwalo!

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA THABO DLADLA WE are at a stage in the history of South Africa wherepeopleneedtopauseandthinkaboutthe important things in life. This is a period when we have seen so many religions and churches springing up all over the show. It is a good thing that people are turning to God. However, the point still remains that there is no bigger religion than service to humanity. We are presently obsessed with serving ourselves. It is in this spirit that one has to appreciate the role played by some of our departed uncles, fathers, mothers and brothers in football. The footballinstitution, undermyleadership, benefitted hugely from Padsa, an organisation built over the years by selfless men and women. Uncle Thumba, Ronnie Naidoo and many others spent countless hours serving the youth

Buckley urges youth to finish school >> While playing soccer is not a long term career, Maritzburg United midfielder Delron Buckely has urged aspiring footballers to go to school in order to have something to fall back on. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to him.

B

ORN in Durban 36 years ago, well–travelled defender Buckley, has also played for the national team and spent 18 years playing soccer abroad. He joined Maritzburg United last year. Before joining the club, he was playing for Karlsruher SC in Germany. Although he spends most of his time in training, he is a dedicated family man who spends the little spare time that he has with his German wife Raphaela and their three daughters – Charlize, Jada and Malia. “My daily routine involves waking up at 6 am every morning to have breakfast with my family. I take my youngest daughter to kindergarten and shoot straight to training. After training, I go home for lunch and then transport my kids to several activities”. Speaking about his decision to come back home, he said: “I am a Durban boy, so it is great to be close, to come home again and to see my family regularly”. Speaking to Maritzburg United fans, Buckley said: “We are grateful for the support from our fans as they have been with us through thick and thin. We urge them to keep on supporting us no matter what because we need them as much as they need us”. Although there are challenges within the football industry, he thinks that it can only change if they can stop racism. Buckley, who looks up to Ryan Giggs, hopes to be a manager for a top football club one day. Motivating aspiring footballers, he said: “Dreams do come true, but never forget about finishing school, so that you can have something to fall back on”.
