Boy drowns in stream >> Family appeals to authorities to attend to area so that it is safe for other children I rushed to the stream after a call from his friends who told me he was drowning
NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

HE nine year-old boy who drowned in a stream in Haniville had a dream of becoming a farmer one day. According to his great grandmother Hilda Mbasa (67), he was an animal lover. Nduduzo, known as ‘Ndu’ Mbasa, a drowned last Wednesday on his way back home. He left the school early because of water and electricity cutsonthedayoftheincident.Nduduzo was in grade four at Haniville primary school. According to Mbasa, Ndu drowned while trying to get a bodyboard that was floating in the stream. “I rushed to the stream after a call from his friends who told me he was drowning. The first thing I noticed while I was approaching the stream was his uniform next to the stream. “They told me he took off his clothes and went inside to get the bodyboard. By the time I came, his body was already floating above the water. “When I asked his friends what had happened, they told me he was
trying to fetch the bodyboard in the stream. They said he had difficulty getting himself out of the stream”. Mbasa said the police were called and removed the body. She described her grandson as a future farmer. “He always advised me to buy cows and goats and he promised he would take care of them,” she said. “The passing of ‘Ndu’ has saddened us as a family and the community members. We are worried about that trench as we don’t know who made it. We are appealing to the authorities to help us with that trench. Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said an inquest docket has been registered and that the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. Msunduzi municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma could not be reached for comment.

this is not enough until we have a woman president. “Women are managers by nature. We need a woman as president of the country. “Once we see that, then the government would have done its best. “What has been done wrong is that men have been put on top of everything. “Some of them are not even man enough to act responsibly. “I’m not saying that all of the men are irresponsible; there are a few that are good,” she said. Ngobese said she is happy that August is officially women’s month. “It feels good, although we must be practical about this. “I believe that every day should be women’s day. “Not everything can be done in one month,” she said.

They were having kids out of wedlock. I started doing research about the Nomkhubulwane religion. “That is when I grew and understood some of the things in our culture,” she said. CO-OP training academy in the pipeline >> New Act will assist poverty eradication NOKULUNGA NGOBESE
>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za
A
NEW co-operative Act aimed at allowing ‘effective functioning’ of co-operatives is soon to be implemented, with the establishment of a co-op training academy in the pipeline. Speaking at the official handing over of seven sewing machines to Mandingozeli Textile Co-operative in Railway Street last week, chairperson of South African National Apex Co-operative (Sanaco), Mandla Ngcobo said: “Witheffect to this month,a new co-operative amendment Act was passed by President Jacob Zuma, allowing the re-emergence of co-operatives as vehicles of poverty eradication through job creation. “Therewillbe an academy speciallyestablished to ensure compliance and the sustainability of co-ops. We want to be given trade investment opportunities, and open our own South African factories”. In February this year, the co-op received 17 sewing machines from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in partnership with the Department of Economic Development and Msunduzi municipality. This time around, five more machines were donated by the premier’s office as a women’s month gift. The organization, which consists of seven women and two men, aims to create 50 job opportunities by the end of this year. Their work involves sewing school uniforms, work uniforms, providing hospital linen and traditional clothing. FounderPetrosNtulisaid:“People no longer have to rely on the government for employment. They must use the skills that they have, and knock at the right doors in order to fight unemployment”. KwaZulu-Natal first lady Dr MayMkhizesaid:“Mostof theseorganisations fall apart because people are not working together. Co-ops must fight to produce our own South African products, instead of relying on other countries.”

KHULEKANI MFEKA THE death of the most loved jurist in South Africa’s new dispensation attracted many comments that confirmed how Chief Justice Pius Nkonzo Langa im pacted lives. From the beginning of his legal career in the rural town within our district, his work ethic and giftedness has seen his jurisprudence celebrated even beyond the borders of this country. The story of his history continues to inspire many young people who would otherwise see themselves bound by background and poverty. Many SouthAfricans were first introduced to Langa in 1994 when he was appointed as one of the first judges of colour. Those who had been on the wrong side of the apartheid laws probably knew him prior to that. He was a sought after defencelawyer for many political prisoners and an already respected leader in many progressive formations. No accurate history of this great son of our nation will ever fail to highlight the fact that he experi enced a huge delay in his youth to progress career wise or academically. Langa came from a working class family so he did not have the privilege of an uninterrupted second ary school education. At some point he landed a messenger job and a job in a shirt factory. Unlike some young people who
found themselves in similar situations, he refused to let go of his dream to be a professional in spite of the situation that he was facing. His first job in the legal system was that of court interpreter. While many of his peers had a sense of having arrived, he was not satisfied and therefore registered for a B Juris Degree with a distance learn ing university. His attainment of this qualification, purely by correspondence, opened doors for him to be promot ed to become a prosecutor and later a magistrate. He also studied for the Bachelor of Law Degree in the same university to prepare for a career as a lawyer. His accolades as an attorney, advocate and senior counsel are well documented. As he was laid to rest, Langa remains an epitome of what a person with a combination of selfdeter mination and attitude of lifelong learning can achieve. He carried his responsibilities in all his capacities with dignity, commitment and discipline that re mained his trademark throughout his career. For many of us who sometimes work with young people who experience delays in their journeys to success, Langa’s story will always be a testimony of how a man was able to overcome limitations, en gage in a process of self–development and die as a worldrenowned player in his field. It is hoped that many young people experiencing similar frustrations gain the courage to pick up the spear and work their way to lead our nation.

Shortage of ambulances in Vulindlela I FIND it difficult to understand a situation whereby an ambulance is called at 7:45am up until 11:30am and still does not respond. When I recalled the ambulance services I was told that there are only three ambulances operating in our Vulindlela area. It is a shocking and disappointing statement that such an area with a large population is serviced so poorly. I have no doubt that if it was a pre dominantly white suburb this would not have happened. It is disappointing that we are not reaping the fruits of our freedom. It will be very much appreciated if such problems can be rectified with imme diate effect as we are about to em bark on the 2014 elections. The department of health needs to address lack of staff and resources urgently. THEMBINKOSI MDUNGE KwaMnyandu

CROWDED House in the city has changed its name to Tiger Tiger Thurs day to cater for black partygoers. It will open its doors for the first time on 5 September. Fano Gumede (pictured) of Fanotainment said the idea of a night club arrived after they picked up over
the years that there is no such venue for black people in Pietermaritzburg. “These Thursdays we are going to cater for the black market. What will make this place unique is the setup inside and also the location in Berg Street and Commercial Road.” He said they will close at 4 am on Fri days. “We are going to offer free trans port to and from the club. We are start ing with Scottsville area and Pelham, we will also offer free drinks for two hours between 8 to 10 pm every Thursday. Music on offer will be hip hop and
the cover charge will only be R50

A powerful voice guiding KZN’s widows SIMPHIWE MKHIZE
“N
OTHING succeeds like success,” so goes the English saying. This is the most appropriate way of describing the consequences of the strug gle of a citybased empowerment and lob by 32 000member strong organisation for widows in KwaZuluNatal, known as Izwi Labafelokazi (Voice of the Widows). During the three years of its operation, the provincial organisation h as emerged as a force to reckon with in the area of de fending and promoting the rights and in terests of women and mothers, most of whom become struggling single parents when their spouses pass on. Having had the privilege of following the spectacular growth of this highly use ful organisation over a period of time as a developmental journalist, I can say with out a measure of a doubt that Izwi La bafelokazi is indeed a widow’s dream come true. One of the organisation’s founders and leading pioneers is a middleaged well spoken woman called Ntombintombi Mt share whose compassion, selfsacrifice and hard work have earned her the much deserved role of heading this nonprofit
making organisation as chairperson. Mtshare, who comes from Imbali Unit 1, personifies the struggle of the socio economic emancipation of the woman folk in the land. Recently, she granted me an exclusive interview about the latest successes of this provincial formation. She has this sto ry to tell: “It did not come overnight, but after a long time of working hard and knocking on doors, the government departments under the honorable Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize, as well as other national govern ment structures, are now opening doors for widows and enabling the organisation to defend and protect the interests of widows,” says Mtshare. “We would not be where we are today if it was not for the provincial Department of Education, which is led by our honora ble MEC Mr Senzo Mchunu – his depart ment’s school nutrition programme has employed a number of our members to supply food for many schools,” she said. “Izwi Labafelokazi has 16 cooperatives and each one has between five to eight members, which means we have an aver age of 85 families that are now directly benefiting from the provincial Education

Department’s School Nutrition pro gramme. “We now also get a yearly grant of R350 000 that the organisation receives from the national Department of Trade
and Industries (IDT) to enable the various cooperatives our organisation has to work well, and these include clothing washing and ironing businesses, as well as agricul turalrelated projects like poultry and oth ers,” said Mtshare. “The organisation also refers cases of old widowed women as well as those that are sickly as a result of Aidsrelated illness es, to the Department of Social Develop ment so that they can get social grants. We are of late engaged in an ongoing consultation process with the MEC of that provincial department, Mrs Weziwe Thusi. She agrees with us that vulnerable women like widows deserve the support of her department in order to empower them economically so that they are able to fend for themselves and their families. “We have the support of the South Afri can Women in Construction (Sawec) who have a widows’ programme which has en gaged 40 of our members’ children through Sita where they are given training and a stipend of R1 500 over a period of 1 to 3 years. “Through these programs the message is clear to the widow – that a widow can not sit there and feel sorry for herself just because her husband has died.
The widow must stand up and use whatever resources and opportunities are available, including her children, in order to rise beyond the challenges that came as a result of losing the regular income that her husband provided for her family,” Mthsare said. Continued Mtshare, “There are various types of widows – there are widows who inherit wealth from their husbands and those that are employed. “But there are also those that are left with nothing and they are unemployed, andthesehappentobeinthemajority. The latter are left alone to suffer when their husbands pass away. “A widow has many challenges – from being overtaxed her husband’s work pen sion, to losing her house to the bank if she cannot pay for it or opportunists who take advantage of her as a widow”. She said that the widow is more than likely to end up being a poor and strug gling single parent after the death of her spouse. Back to reality for Bafana Bafana
I
T’S now back to real life and to official fixtures for Bafana Bafana. The time to play a series of friendlies has now ended and head coach Gordon Igesund and his troops need to concentrate on the upcoming games and make sure that the country qualifies for 2014 Brazil World Cup. Last week, the SA senior national side played two quality international friendlies against the reigning African Champions, Nigeria and Burkina Faso respectively during a series of sporting events to honour former President Nelson Mandela. The SA outfit went down 2-0 against the Nigerians last Wednesday but they managed to bounce back and won 2-0 against Burkina Faso. The reality is Bafana Bafana will faceBotswananextmonth,7September, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in a must-win World Cup qualifying encounter. Also the tricky situation is, South Africans will have to pray hard andhopeforthebestbecausetheticket to Brazil is no longer in their hands. SA’s trip to Brazil in 2014 will depend on the other fixture between the
Central African Republic and Ethiopia. SA will be hoping that CAR pull off a major upset by beating the current group leaders Ethiopia in order for Bafana to progress to the final round of World Cup qualifiers. Igesund has agreed that the friendlies were tough, quality and a good exercise, but his forwards need toapplysome“urgency”infrontofthe goalmouth. “Sometimes I feel we need to be more quicker around that area because only goals win matches.” He says it was evident in their recent international friendlies. “I thought we were able to bounce back brilliantly against Burkina Faso on Saturday. We dominated but still failed to use most of the chances we created. Maybe my players were a little bit too patient, but if you create chances and don’t score it can be a concern,” said the coach. He is hoping that all players in his wish list will be available or will be allowed by the circumstances to be part of the squad. For the past three weeks it has been difficult for Igesund as most
players pulled out for different reasons, such as injuries and Caf fixtures for teams like Orlando Pirates. “We are almost used to working with obstacles every time we call up players for the national team. We understand there’s good reason for that but we hope for good preparations for Botswana game because it’s the Fifa date. He hopes “to field the best team available” against Botswana and his latest pick includes foreign-based players and local players. Current Bafana squad Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Wayne Sandilands, Senzo Meyiwa Defenders: Siyanda Xulu, Bongani Khumalo, Thabo Nthethe, Anele Ngcongca, Tsepo Masilela, Thabo Matlaba, Buhle Mkhwanazi Midfielders: Dean Furman, Oupa Manyisa, Andile Jali, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bongani Zungu, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Daine Klate, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Thulani Serero Strikers: Bernard Parker, Tokelo Rantie, Kermit Erasmus.-Jerry Barnes

compared to their peers across the world. In fact it was embarrassing to see manyofourguysbeingobese.Whatexample are we setting for the young players? A lot of education is needed to improve sports in general. People need to learn that sports do not end the day you retire from professional football. Exercise and proper diet should be a lifestyle for those involved as coaches and managers. Surely, as adults you cannotbeasfitandtrimasayoungperson. The “legends” football match against the Italians gave a clear picture ofSouthAfricanfootball.Ithinkformer footballers should do more than just talking. We are all part of South African FootballAssociation.Therealityisthat many of our guys played football under the era of kick and rush coupled with tricks done randomly. Technical-tactical understanding is still a challenge. We need to humble ourselves and undergo training to improve our coaching skills. Black football coaches in particular need to be a bit more disciplined in our country. We do not take the job of foot-
ball coaching seriously. It is not good for the industry that football coaches are obese. I think many of our guys are capable; we just need to improve our professionalism. Many former players wanttobegivenjobsinthePSLwithout proving themselves at youth level. People fail to understand that coaching is a professional job. South African football needs top technicians at youth level. If we are to compete with the best in the world, our only hope is lower levels. We hope that the South African Football Association gets a visionary leader in the upcoming elections. This country needs the kind of leadership that will put the interests of youth in the forefront. Presently, there are very few leaders even at district level. FootballleaderslikeEricMtshatsha and a few others are an endangered species in South African football. The country is short of selfless leaders. We now get into political positions to line ourpockets.Ifyoudonotagreewithme check our districts’ vehicles, they are not used for private business. end of the season. Middendorp also believes the recent break gave his injured players a chance to heal. He was reported saying that he is happy to start the campaign on a high note as this will set the tune for the rest of the season. “It was good to start with a win, especially playing at home. I am happy that we achieved our mission which was to collect maximum points. Last season we struggled against these small teams and so it is good to get a win against them this time,” said Middendorp. Players reported to be still nursing injuries are Ashley Hartog, Nhlanhla Vilakazi and Philani Zulu. Despite the worries around the camp, the Team of Choice can rely on their Ghanaian striker Yakubu Mohammed who already shows signs of being deadly in the front of the goal-mouth. Yakubu scored the only goal against Polokwane City. -Jerry Barnes. We supply it, we fit it and we guarantee it!

ARITZBURG United are expected to intensify their campaign for maximum points when they host University of Pretoria this Saturday night at Harry Gwala Stadium. Midweek (Wednesday) the Team of Choice travelled to Charles Mopeli Stadium and played Free State Stars. Whatever happened in the FreeState must be treated as history in order for the players to stay focused and strong in the current season. Although United’s game is not expected to be smooth sailing, it is likely to earn maximum points against AmaTuks, especially as it happens in front of the home fans. If the home side can keep the heat, steam and pressurise the visitors all the way, a win will be easily secured. It is also encouraging that United were able to win their first official opening fixture against the rookies Polokwane City 1-0 at Harry Gwala Stadium early this month. Although the Team of Choice’s off-season preparations were almost disturbed by the injuries of a couple of players, the head coach Ernst Middendorp’s mission is to keep the momentum shown against City in order to end in the top eight bracket at the
