Jika Joe dwellers get houses

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

B

Y Monday afternoon, Jika Joe residents who had moved into their new, temporary accommodation last week Thursday felt more at home. With their laundry sun-kissed and wind-blown by their new premises, sisters Zinhle and Khululiwe Mchunu are thrilled that there has been a light at the end of the tunnel. They are both grateful that they have found a place theycancallhomeafterenduringrain and chilly weather conditions at the temporary tents provided by the uMgungundlovu Municipality after their shacks were burnt down. Both sisters suffered a blow when their shacks were engulfed by fire about six months ago. At the time, their only form of accommodation was the municipal tents. However, Khululiwe preferred to rent a home because one of her children has TB. On the other hand, Zinhle did not like her stay in her tent. “When my shack was burnt in the middle of the night, all of my clothing was burnt and so were my other personal belongings, including my ID. I was only left with pajamas which I

She said that staying in the tent was a nightmare. “On rainy days our clothing and

blankets would get soaked and we would have flu for weeks,” said Zinhle. Currently, Jika Joe fire victims are being accommodated in municipal tents at the Tatham Sports Ground.

At the recent Executive Committee (Exco) meeting, acting municipal manager Mosa Molapo said that all applicants who have passed the assessmentfortemporaryhousinginJika Joe will be declared as indigent,

and council would waiver the tariff application fees in respect to water and sanitation for the residents. Deputy municipal manager for economic development Dr Ray Ngcobo said, “We are trying to pull people into the system because there is a lot ofservicetheftsuchaswaterandelectricity. Getting them into the system will allow us to stop wastage. There is a project which will be run by the CFO to try and get more people onto our indigent list because the numbers currently may seem to be low. That process is still underway,” said Ngcobo. Jika Joe community leader ThembinkosiMagagulasaidthatthepeople who have been accommodated in the temporary houses are happy with their new homes. However, Magagula urged for construction of the other structures to go faster so that those who are still staying in the tents can be accommodated as well. “As it was raining over the weekend, the tents were flooded. When it is hot a lot of those who stay in these tents are forced to sleep outside their tents because of the heat. We are a bit worried when it comes to the pace of the construction because more people continue to suffer,” he said.

er to completely restrict entrance at all points is costly and impractical,” stated Kotze. Since the Msunduzi forest came under NCT management in 1998, the plantation has been able to generate a cumulative profit of R15.7 million, stated Kotze. He said that this excludes timber revaluation. “The 2013/14 financial year reflects a profit of R1.67 million which is R4.46 million including timber revaluation. The Msunduzi plantation is subject to annual external audits,” he stated.

THE company which manages the Msunduzi Municipality forest, which is located on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg, Natal Co-operative Timbers (NCT), has come out to say that there has been a vast improvement on the management of the forest operations. The historic Publicity House building at the cor ner of Chief Albert Luthuli (Commercial) Road and Langalibalele (Longmarket) Street is cur rently being renovated. Illegal advertising has been scrapped off the building walls along Langalibalele Street and the front of the build ing has been freshly painted. The front of the building has been paved with red bricks to compliment the redbrick paved part of Chief Albert Luthuli Road. Publicity House was con structed in the 1800s and currently accommo dates the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association offices.

ing, where aspiring traders can copy from those who are already masters in order to learn the basics. Speaking to Echo, Mazibuko said: “With the high unemployment rate, particularly amongst the youth, Forex trading can be beneficial because they can make their own money. Although it is risky, it is the only efficient way where you can make your own money at your own pace. You buy and sell currency and make profit at the same time.” Co-owner of the company, Zweli Dlamini said that the workshop will also be aimed at alerting people on what to watch out when trading online. “With online trading being very popular lately, there are so many scams around it. Brokers take money from people with the promise of helping them trade online and leave them like that. We are not taking any money,” he said.

THE Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Pietermaritzburg and Howick circuit, will be celebrating the election of the first young man to be nominated as the vice president of the districts’ Young Man Guild (YMG Amadodana Ase Weseli) on Sunday. Sfiso Zuma, who is also a deputy principal at KwaPata secondary school, started his journey as the vice president in the month of May, after he was officially acknowledged in Newcastle. The celebration will take place at the Methodist church in Imbali Unit 1. Social Development minister, Bathabile Dlamini, is one of the guests expected to attend the celebration. Speaking to the 40 year old father of three, he said he is honoured that the church has so much trust in him. He said his duty is to make sure that he guides men in the church, looking at different angles of issues inside and outside of the church. “Basically, my duty is to be the guide for men in the church. The aim or the duty is not only looking within the church, but to also look at the other challenges outside the church. As one of the men who have been tasked by the church, I look at many issues. I have to look at spiritual upliftment and bible studies. I also look at social ills such as drug abuse, issues of HIV and AIDS and also those families affected by these social ills. “In the near future we are planning career guidance,” said Zuma. He is the first young man to be chosen to be the vice president at a district level at his age. Other guests that will be present at the event are leaders of the Methodist Church of the Pietermaritzburg and Howick circuit.

(From left) Imperial Group marketing manager, Niki Cronje along with Charlotte Sullivan of SADD and Mpho Maisa seen here during their national training for road safety given to over 460 schools since its initiation.

PUPILS of 30 Pietermaritzburg schools are undergoing a road safety outreach programme to make them responsible on the roads. Last Thursday at Slangspruit Primary School, South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) and Imperial embarked on a campaign to educate pupils on how to conduct an efficient and safe scholar patrol system. Imperial’s Niki Cronje said it is their responsibility to ensure they are consistently creating opportunities to educate South Africans around responsible road usage. The pupils are also taught the importance of buckling up and the consequencesofnotbucklingup and are encouraged to pass the message on within their own communities. SADD’s Caro Smit said they are consistently looking for ways in which to improvesaferuseofour roads. “The synergy between Imperial’s road safety campaign and our own outreach is very strong and as a result, we are very proud to have assisted Imperial in identifying the right schools, those with a realneed, forthisinitiative,” said Smit.

OVIES like ‘The Matrix’, ‘Avatar’ and ‘Stomp the Yard’ are what inspired a Pietermaritzburg dancing trio to form a group called Matrix Avatar in 2007. The group is made up of Monwabisi Mhlongo, Siyabonga Ndlovu and Tumelo Mhlaoli from the Imbali Unit 2

township. It has appeared in reality talent show ‘SA’s got talent’. Their performance moved the audience who clapped and waved hands, said Mhlongo. He described their artistic moves as a mix of music and dance, which includes dance styles taken from television movies like ‘Stomp the Yard’. “We formed the group in 2007 and were driven by our passion of dance and music,” he said.

Talking about their journey as part of ‘SA’s got talent’, he said they are now waiting for a call that will decide if they made it through to the semi-finals of the competition. “We went and auditioned in Durban and our performance was exciting. We received a lot of love from the audience and that kept us going. We had our face painted with blood which represented zombies. “We are now waiting for the call which will tell us if we

We have performed in most places in Durban and the feedback has been good,” he said. The group hopes to open a dance school one day. “We would like to see what we do grow and then pass it from generation to generation. “It’s always unique to come up with your own thing and as a group, that is what we do when we mix our dance moves,” he said.

The majority see their chil dren’sparticipationinfootballassomekindofalotto ticket. In some instances, education, both in terms of academic and “home” is neglected. It is important for both government and football associations to see football in terms of recreational and health reasons. Facilities for training and com peting should be provided in the townships. It is sad that most municipalities are neglecting their respon sibilities in this regard. They spend more time and re sources worrying about either professional or inter national football. When we were growing up at the height of the apartheid regime, most footballers used to travel to the Showgrounds for practices. TherewerenotrainingfacilitiesinImbaliorEdendale. The situation has worsened in recent years. A few football facilities that existed in Alex Park are now used for other sports. Lackoffacilitiesandaproperlyorganisedfootball league is driving young people to alcohol, drugs and crime. Diseases associated with lack of exercise, like heart problems etc, are on the rise. It is also true that football can also be used to keep both mothers and fathers active. Fifa tried during the 2010 World Cup to educate Africans about the importance of active lifestyles using football. It is sad that African nations arenottakingthepopularityofthegamefortheright reasons. In the province of KwaZuluNatal, we have world class football facilities named after great leaders. It is sad that Slangspruit and Dambuza, commu nities where Gwala and Mabhida grew up, have no football facilities. I doubt if teams from these two areas will be allowed to even set their feet on the grass of these facilities. The best facilities these days are reserved for the elite. The young and poor have to do with gravel football facilities. It is critical for our youth in Pietermaritzburg to strive hard irrespective of these challenges. In recent years, boys like Andile Cele, Mbulelo Ma bizela graduated from TeHuis to PSL and interna tional football. Success in life does not only rely on money. Knowledge and the correct mindset are key to achieving your goals.

Taking the new Ford Mustang from sketch to production

Toyota’s stunning new SUV TOYOTA has released images of a stunning concept car that provides the first hint of a type of vehicle the company would like to bring to the small SUV market. The radical Toyota CHR concept, which will have its world premiere next week at the Paris Motor Show, presents a bold new dynamic design language. The striking blue CHR concept introduces an expressive new “diamond architecture” styling theme to the segment and features a hybrid powertrain. Below its compact, sensual cabin profile, the lower bodywork has been sculpted to represent the faceted surfaces of a high lydurable, precisioncut gemstone. The front view debuts new styling themes that hint at a fu

From the side, the highlyfaceted lower body, aggressively angular rear shoulders and muscular wheel arches are contrasted with an exceptionally sleek cabin profile. Highlydistinctive, aeroinspired, floating rear light clusters further enhance the broad shoulders of the concept car’s lower bodywork.

The former Free State Stars mentor did not mince his words when it comes to bundling the SA glamour boys out of the TKO. “Itwasprobablyamatterofluck[for them] and unlucky from our side, but I am glad that we are going back there and have a fair chance of rectifying what may have gone wrong,” said Komphela. United’s spokesman, Brian Zuma, says that his management was very proud with the way the players put up a fight against the log leaders and recent MTN 8 champions. Zuma said that to go back to FNB Stadium to face Chiefs again in a week will give them a good chance of setting the record straight and was an opportunity to show their opponents what

they are made of. “Our league game against Chiefs at FNB Stadium was not bad at all. In fact we had instances where we actually looked better than them in some departments. “They were also lucky to beat us with a penalty spot goal (1-0). We are just glad that we are going back for a different competition, but against the same team, same time and at the same stadium. “We are not going to allow them to pushusaroundandanythinginthecup game can happen. Georgetown, Smero, Nyonithwele, Laduma and Edendale Technical High School will battle it out among them selves in this competition. Madlala said that Mabizela and Khenyeza are the best example be cause they started their amateur ca reers in local circles. “We are really grateful to the two players for ploughing back into the community. Events such as these help to develop and take the game to the next level,” said Madlala. Mabizela started his early career with Ashdown Young Bucs, Maritzburg City and later Orlando Pirates. After returning from Tottenham Hotspur in England, he also played for Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits, Chippa United and is now with Mpum alanga Black Aces. Khenyeza played for Maritzburg City, Lamontville Golden Arrows, Kaiz er Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Ajax Cape Town and is currently with Aces. The winners of both sections will take home a new soccer kit, a trophy and gold medals. Jerry Barnes
