City radio gets funding
>> The developments have put KZN Capital 104 FM in good stead to start operating as soon as the end of March NOKULUNGA NGOBESE
>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za
D
OUBTS of whether KZN Capital FM will ever go on air are a thing of the past, with the station earmarking the end of March as ‘the’ day for finally going on air. This comes after the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) approved its funding of R1.5 million towards broadcasting
equipment and operating costs on Monday. Since it was granted an operating lincense by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa in 2010, things have not been easy as the station had problems with finding accommodation and being connected to the World’s View transmission antenna. Speaking at the station’s new premises at 152 Langalibalele Street, programme manager for community media at MDDA,
Mpho Leshabane said that as an agency that seeks to provide funding to small community media in order to ensure that relevant information is disseminated to the communities, the deal is signed and sealed. “About R1.5 million has been approved, but it will not be paid in a lump sum but rather in instalments, to ensure that all the specific projects are completed. Their service providers will directly be paid by us.” Station manager Jerry Jones said that their biggest dream was to be on air by December last year, but
representatives from the agency could not come as planned as the week that they were scheduled to come was the same week that the country lost the father of the nation former President Nelson Mandela. Expressing his excitement, he said: “Things are finally looking up. It takes time to be where you want to be, and there were many hiccups along the way. “Some even hurled insults, saying that the establishm ent of a radio s tation was not going to happen after many failed attempts. But I kept the
faith because I had envisioned it. “After all the hurdles that we have been through, it is of no doubt that it will be successful”.

ITH the matric results pass celebrations over, for some it has been a difficult journey finding space at tertiary institutions. A week after results came out, institutions like UKZN, FET and DUT were faced with long queues as school leavers wanted to secure tertiary space to pursue various career courses this year. Echo spoke to Londeka Mchunu from Camperdown who was at the DUT Riverside campus to register for a Bachelor of Education (BED). She was not happy as she was told that her points didn’t qualify her to enrol. Mchunu and Minenhle Mlaba, her friend
who was accompanying her, were heading to the Further Education and Training (FET) college to check if there was space available for the same course. Mchunu said her second choice was nursing which she was prepared to settle for if she could not get into her first option. “I am now forced to go and check at FET institutions to see if they have space for me,” she said. At Indumiso DUT campus, Sindisiwe Mshengu from Sweetwaters said she went to register for Counselling Psychology and Law. “The bad news was that they told me they do not offer the course at the campus. My application was not considered at UKZN

This is in keeping with patterns of registration in previous years,” she said.
because they wanted 34 points and I had 32 points. It’s very hard to find a space and it’s very frustrating,” said Mshengu. The UKZN corporate department’s Indumathie Moodley said the university’s registration process started on 7 January. She said the most popular courses applied forareBachelorofEducation,BachelorofSocial Work and all programmes in the Health Sciences, especially medicine and nursing. “UKZN has received more than 89 000 applications for the 8 400 available spaces in the undergraduate academic programmes. 28yearold professional chef Sabelo Vilakazi says that young people should be their own generators of employment, instead of waiting to be employed
B
ORN in Esigodini 28 years ago, Vilakazi was raised by a single mother who was a street hawker. He knew from a very young age that he wanted to be his own boss one day. After completing his tertiary education at the International Hotel School, he worked as a professional chef for Nino’s in Johannesburg and Sakhumzi restaurant, before starting a restaurant in Esigodini. After being placed as first runner up in the Small Business Friday competition which, run by iGagasi FM and Nedbank in a bid to promote small businesses in South Africa, he was able to start his own canteen at the Greater Edendale mall. He has also employed four people to help him as he cooks all sorts of foods and runs an events management company. Vilakazi said that his long term goal is to own restaurants across the province. Motivating young people, he said that he comes from a poverty-stricken community, riddled with crime and drug abuse, but managed to create a future. “My passion is to see the youth taking a stand and responsibilitytochangeand work harder to alleviate poverty. The time to wait for everything to come to us is gone, and we have to create our own opportunities, with the skills that we have.”
>> While the unemployment rate is very high, particularly among the youth, young aspiring entrepreneur Sabelo Vilakazi says that young people should not wait for opportunities to come to them, but should be their own generators of employment. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to the professional chef who runs Cafe Cuisine at the Greater Edendale mall and Esigodini.

IFP on DA-Agang coalition THE Inkatha Freedom Party has wished the DA/Agang coalition all of the very best with their partnership. It also said that it was not surprised by the turn of events as the political writing has always been on the wall. In a press release, IFP secretary general Sibongile Nkomo said Dr Mamphela Ramphela has learned firsthand what a sizeble initiative it is to launch one’s own party. Many South Africans, including some senior DA MPs, were on Tuesday shocked to hear that Ramphele will be the party’s presidential candidate in the coming national elections. Nkomo said the lack of structures and the enormity of the task is finally what drove Ramphela’s decision to merge with the DA. “We wish her all the very best”, she said.
Hopewell bus commuters fear for their lives >> Residents want the Department of Transport to do something before a tragedy happens NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

OMMUTERS using Duzi buses in the Hopewell and Ntembeni areasaredemanding anurgent intervention from the Department of Transport in the province, as they allege to be transported by ‘coffins on wheels’ on a daily basis. Some of the commuters from the Ntembeni area told Echo that they are forced to use these buses daily, becauseotherthanprivatecars, there
is no other mode of transport. Despite having written several letters to the Department of Transport since 2011, their complaints seem to have fallen on deaf ears, as the bus company’s contract with the department continues to be renewed. Speaking to Echo, a commuter who did not want to be identified, said that they fear for their lives every day as they break down regularly. “This is a disaster waiting to happen. If they do not break down, they overheat with commuters inside.
There have been three recent accidents caused by them. There was once a period where we were given another bus company after we had complained, but their contract was not renewed. “We live by faith because we never know whether or not we will arrive at our destinations safely. Some of us have even lost jobs because of late coming or not pitching at work because of bus problems”, she said. Another resident said: “We demand that the department sends
its inspectors before it is too late. Since 2011, the department has been telling us that the matter is still under discussion and we are fed up.” Bus company owner Ramesh Gudar said that there is a problem at Ntembeni as their transport committee has been disbanded. “There has been a select amount of people who are trying to destabilise Duzi bus operation in the area. These busesareoncontractwiththedepartment and they are checked every month by appointed people. Any
transgressions are penalised severely. Any transport company will have breakdowns, taking into account the bad conditions of the roads to Ntembeni. It is not true that nothing has been done, as we are working with the department, and since May 2012, together with representatives, we arrived with a solution to order four new buses. These new buses will be delivered in mid February.” The spokesperson for the department could not be reached for comment.

South African traditional choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo and flamenco fusionists the Gipsy Kings, both longtime favourites at the Grammys, on Sunday shared the award for best world music album. Ladysmith Black Mambazo, whose rhythmic a cappella performances preserve the musical traditions of South Africa’s black mine workers, shared the Grammy for their live album Singing for Peace Around the World. The choir dedicated the work to late President Nelson Mandela and promised to donate proceeds of the album purchased on the band’s website to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. The Grammy was the fourth won by Ladysmith Black Mambazo on the band’s own. The choir was thrust before a global audience in 1986 when it collaborated on Paul Simon’s groundbreaking Grammywinning album Graceland and joined the US songwriter’s ensuing tour. AFP

Lack of water due to stolen school pipes
A COMBINATION of blistering heat, hundreds of children and waterless toiletshadturnedtheGrangePrimary School in Southgate into a smelly hellhole by Tuesday. The school was left without water after thieves stole copper pipes and taps valued at approximately R40 000 last Thursday night. Police Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that the police were investigating a case of theft and said that no arrests had been made. A source, who asked not to be named, said on Tuesday that the school’s toilets had been blocked
since Friday and the stench was unbearable. There was also no water for children to drink. Despite this, no water had been delivered and the school, which serves approximately 900 children, had not been closed, the source added. The source said the lack of water posed a severe health risk and diseases like hepatitis could be passed on. “Therearesmallchildrenwithpoo on their hands which they can’t wash. They’re crying because they’re thirsty. The school should be closed down until water is provided,” the source said.
“THE LACK OF WATER POSED A SEVERE HEALTH RISK AND DISEASES LIKE HEPATITIS COULD BE PASSED ON” Speaking for the Department of Education, Bhekisisa Mncube said the department had not been informed of the lack of water at the school. He said it was up to the principal to inform them of any possible dangers to pupils, and that the department tried to avoid closing schools if possible. “If we’d heard about it we would have attended to it. This is a city
school, it’s not out in a rural area. We can solve that problem in 48 hours,” Mncube said. Despite repeated attempts to speaktotheschool’sprincipal, hewas not available for comment. Anyone with information about the stolen pipes and taps are asked to phone 10111 or Alexandra Road police station at 033 845 7700 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 (tollfree).

Mostofthepatientssaidtheywake up as early as 4am, but the nurses start working at 8.30am. The other concern raised by the patients is the issue of working space. They said its small and it only accommodates a limited number of patients while others wait outside. Zandile Mhlongo from Mpumuza said that, on the clinics information board, it is written that work starts at 6amand ends at 6pm. That is where the confusion is, with the starting and the closing hours. “I make sure that I wake up early in the morning so that I can be attended to early. It is always an issue with the time. start, the queue is already long. “The TB and HIV centre is small and it cannot accommodate a large numberofpeople.Weare sickandbeing exposed to the sun for that long is unbearable. It’s too hot these days and there is a lot at risk. If we could have a shelter where we can sit down and rest while others are being attended to, that would be better,” said Mhlongo. Fikile Mchunu said her concern is the time that the nurses start their duties. “They start serving us very late and some of us still have to go to work. We wake up early so that we can get to work on time. We are urging the department to look at the time issue and sort this out. “Adding more staff would be a great idea and it would ease the pressure on the nurses and patients,” said Mchunu. Umgungundlovu district health communication officer Msawenkosi Mncwabe, said the TB and HIV centre starts operating from 7am to 4pm from Monday to Friday. He said currently, there is a shortage of staff. “We have advertised the posts to fill. The infrastructure is also a challenge but there are six consultation rooms that are already under construction. “They will be finished soon and the infrastructure challenge will be sorted once they are complete,” said Mncwabe.

ISTORY will be made when World Gospel PowerHouse gives an opportunity to both aspiring and skilled stage actors for its groundbreaking gospel musical, Maria! The story will also creatively cele-
brate the 20 years of democracy in SA and the role that gospel music has played in promoting unity, social cohesion, moral regeneration and inspiration. Auditions will take place in Durban, SABCstudios(KEMasingaStreet)on29
January, 2014. These will be followed by PMB city hall and Jozi (Soweto Theatre) on 30 January and 4 February respectively. All the auditions will start at 9 am. World Gospel PowerHouse president Zanele Mbokazi, said that they
first spoke about this historic initiative back in 2011 at the 4th Crown Gospel Music Awards, but had to postpone it. “This is a story of the Son, Jesus, as told by, Maria. The play will be enhanced by dance, acting and gospel music from various artists.” She said that though the play will debut in KZN at the Playhouse, it will later be shown in different theatres around the country, including the Winston Churchill in PMB, State Theatre in Pretoria, Arts Cape Theatre in Cape Town and Pacoff Theatre in Bloemfontein. Plans to showcase Maria! abroad are still underway. Syanda Mwandla, Crown Gospel Music Awards choreographer and Edmund Mhlongo, theatre guru from Kcap, will be behind the production of Maria! They invite anyone who can act onstage, including actors, dancers and singers. “We are looking for people who are passionate and talented. More than anything, we are in search of that one person who will play Jesus. We urge the community to assist us in finding ‘Jesus,’ said Mwandla. InterestedpartiescancontactWorld Gospel PowerHouse at 031 303 3520/ Home_of_Gospel (Twitter) / World Gospel PowerHouse (FaceBook) or Twitter @mbokazizanele or just show-up at the venues mentioned above. Maria! Will go on-stage during Easter 2014. -Supplied

KZN Sport and Recreation MEC Ntombikayise SibhidlaSaphetha (back) joins NCC Development manager Thuthu Manyathi (front) in a K2 at Camps Drift. The Department of Sport and Recreation have injected a large amount of money into the 2014 Dusi Canoe Marathon from a sponsorship point of view, as well as from a development aspect.

I
n the past, canoeing has been seen by many as a sport for the elite but in recent times, with the input fromvariousstakeholderssuchasthe Dusi Canoe Marathon 2014 and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation, this perception has been changed dramatically. And a flood of young, black talent from throughout KwaZulu-Natal and around South Africa will once again look to tackle this year’s challenge from Pietermaritzburg to Durban whichgetsunderwayon13February. The provincial Department of Sport and Recreation have shown tremendous support for the 2014 paddling spectacle and are proud to be associated with the event this year. Department MEC Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha believes that events such as the Dusi are important
for the province. “The Dusi Canoe Marathon is a major sporting event in the province and it is key for us to maintain it as an event,” said Sibhidla-Saphetha. “It draws in people from all over the country and even overseas, which turns the spotlight onto the province, something that is beneficial for us from both an economic and tourism point of view.” Drawing people to Pietermaritzburg and Durban for the event is an element that the department felt they needed to manage and promote, and formedanimportantpartofthenewly established relationship with the iconic race. “Pietermaritzburg and Durban are popular cities in the province when it comes to hosting major sporting events, and with this, drawing
people in. With a three day event, the amount of people that pass through bothcentresisincreasedsignificantly and maximising the economic growth from the influx of people is importantforusasadepartment,”the MEC explained. The department has not only taken on the role of being a major sponsor for the event but, by sponsoring this year’s race, they have shown confidence in the numerous development initiatives that have been set up to encourage canoeing development throughout the province. “We have been really encouraged by what we have seen in terms of development,” Sibhidla-Saphetha said. “There are a number of people who have grabbed the opportunity to spread the sport to the previously disadvantaged and we find that huge-
ly positive.” A number of development initiatives have been set up around the province to help young people get involved in the sport of canoeing with the MEC praising the efforts of the Natal Canoe Club, after the canoeing giants recently formed a strong squad of emerging paddlers. “We really need to thank the Natal Canoe Club [organisers of the Dusi] for what they have done for the development of canoeing. They have taken on the development of a number of paddlers and have gone a long way in taking the sport from a previously elite sport to making it accessible for everyone,” Sibhidla-Saphetha explained. Into its 63rd year of existence, the Dusi Canoe Marathon stands as one of the most iconic sporting events

staged within KZN and is regarded by many as one of the most prestigious canoeing event worldwide. “It was important for us to be involved in one of the major events in the province and it is also vital that we give these young people the opportunity to experience being a part of such an important event. The sport, as all sportsdo, providesyoungpeoplewith a form of discipline and being able to work towards something is hugely important for them and for us. It goes a long way in building social cohesion in the province,” Sibhidla-Saphetha added. TALKING FOOTBALL
THABO DLADLA TALK is cheap and generally, that is our speciality in this country. We say a lot and make many promises, but do very little or nothing. It is true that we need to train more football coaches. The problem is that numbers do not help if people lack commitment to produce quality work. Leaders in different fields need to be exemplary. The mind-set is a huge problem. Profits come before service. The result is a slow growing economy. We get into positions to enrich ourselves instead of providing direction. Safa NEC positions are more about seats in the presidential suite, first class air travel, free food etc. It is less about children playing under decent conditions.
We all know what needs to be done toimprovethesituation.Theproblem is that we have developed a culture of materialism. Positions are now more about fame and fortune. We lack the will to work and do the right things. We changed a football season from winter to summer to be in line with Europe. However, when Christmas is aroundthecorner, officialscloseofficesandfootballstops.Thegameserves the interests of administrators more than the players themselves. Our players play under conditions that do not help their growth. We now have leagues that run for four months. Why are we then surprised that our boys and girls spend more time drinking alcohol and using other substances? People need to understand that a strong Bafana Bafana is only possible when young players are handled correctly. Talking and promises do not give results. It is only when people start doing more and talking less that progress becomes possible. Unzima lo mthwalo!
THE MINDSET IS A HUGE PROBLEM. PROFITS COME BEFORE SERVICE. THE RESULT IS A SLOW GROWING ECONOMY. WE GET INTO POSITIONS TO ENRICH OUR SELVES INSTEAD OF PROVIDING DIRECTION
