>> Woman wants compensation for the delay >>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

ESPITE having sat for matric examinations on two different occasions, a 33 year woman from Hopewell has nothing to show for it due to education officials’ bungling. PatriciaMkhizesaysshewantsthe Department of Education to compensate her with a bursary for putting her life on pause for 13 years. She told Echo that the department issued her with a matric certificate with her one of her names missing, thereby forcing her to wait for an amended version indefinitely. She said having sat for it in 2000 up until now the department has failed to reissue her with a matric certificate containing correct information. She said this is the second incident this has happened to her. The former EMabomvini high

Mkhize said that after numerous attempts of trying to sort that out she was advised to re-write her matric in 2007. “I was not happy with some of the symbols I got so, I decided to re-write the subjects, including the English language”, she said. “That was when I encountered the second problem in 2008. The matric certificatecamebackwiththeEnglish language subject but my other name ‘Margaret’ was missing. “Again I made attempts of sorting that matter out but up until now nothing has been done. I have been referred to their Durban offices but I have not been assisted. I have visited their head office but still there is nothing positive. In Durban they told me to wait for three weeks and come back to them.

Three weeks was extended to three months. They told me that they will send my things to Pietermaritzburg. “I have checked and they have not done so,” said Mkhize. She said that this has turned her life into a nightmare. “I have a matric certificate but I’m unemployed. Sometimes I do find a job, the potential employers would ask for the matric certificate. I tell them my story and they don’t buy it. “The department must compensate me with a bursary. It’s their fault, I have lost many job opportunities and I have remained unemployed for years now. My life is at a standstill and when I think about this I feel like crying,” she said. Provincial education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said Mkhize must go to her district examinations office and they will assist her. “This is a technical matter and it can be sorted if she speaks to officials at her district examinations department,” he said.

PPLICATIONS for funding from the Motsepe Foundation are now open to city organisations, following a resolved dispute between three city organisations last week. Last month Echo published a story about the foundation having injected R10 million to be used by city organisations in their developmental programmes. However application for funding could not be made, as three city organisations had not elected their representatives. Chairman of the District Motsepe

Foundation funding and development forum Reverend Caleb Mbokazi said that it was a pre-requisite for all city organisations to have representatives, in order to access funding forms. The funding beneficiaries include: arts, religious organisations, educational funding, music, sport, traditional councils, women and business co-operatives, worker’s organisations, youth owned businesses, co-operatives, public benefit organisations and non-governmental organisations. “The outstanding organisa-

NOKULUNGA NGOBESE >>nokulungan@myecho.co.za ALL is set to go for the implementation of the Inte grated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN) project in the city. The project which was introduced in the city last year costs R3 billion, and is aimed at reducing traffic con gestion by introducing different modes of transport, to use dedicated lanes. Itwillbeimplementedoverafiveyearperiod.Making the last presentation in the project’s preliminary de sign during an Exco meeting last week, IRPTN techni cal team member Rocky Hammond said: “The CBD is congested and businesses are decentralising. We want to provide universally accessible fleet infra structure and to have at least 90% of the morning peak walking or using energy efficient public transport. “We want to reduce the travelling time, with the maximum travel time being 45 minutes for 90% of the home based work trips. There will also be a hospital to hospital link, where transport will fetch commuters outside Edendale hospital. The system will see the use of buses, minibus and will also include cy cling paths pedestrian routes”. The first phase which will include areas such asEdendale,Vulindlela, Sweetwaters, Foxhill and then the CBD is ex pected to start in 2016 and is expected to be completed by 2020. Pietermaritzburg is one of 12 cities that have been identified for the project.

More heavy rains expected this summer >> People are warned of severe weather conditions NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

P

OSSIBLE heavy rain-flooding, severe heavy storms with lightning, hail and strong surface winds can be expected this summer, according to weather forecaster Mduduzi Mthembu. He said since it is summer, thunderstorms willbethecauseofenhancedprobabilityofnormal rainfall. The normal rainfall is expected in most parts of KwaZulu-Natal between November 2013 and January 2014, he said. He told Echo that the far North-Eastern parts which are Zululand and uMkhanyakude districts are the areas with the possibility of heavy rains. Asked if the rain and cold weather should be expected this month in the province, he said the country has just had our first real rain of the season this past week. “The temperatures were cool on average. Only the high-lying areas had cold conditions. Looking at the seasonal forecast, below normal maximum temperatures are expected throughout KZN between November 2013 and February 2014. “But knowing the climatology of KZN, in summer, the conditions are mild to

warm and even hot in some places. So even if it is below normal, it will still fall in the category of mild, warm and hot, although on rare events cold conditions may prevail in the high grounds (southern Drakensburg). “Furthermore, there is above normal minimum temperatures between October and December 2013, implying relatively warmer mornings than usual in most parts of KZN. “As we progress further into the summer season from here on, average temperatures willincreasegradually, reducingthechancesof cold events,” said Dlamini. He warned that people should be cautious during thunderstorm activities. “When they are indoors, they must unplug all electrical appliances. Do not use the landline telephone. Avoid contact with water or take a bath/shower or wash dishes. Stay away from open windows and cover your car. “When outdoors, seek proper shelter (not underneath trees). Do not touch metal cables like electricity or telephone lines, fences. In the open, avoid solitary structures like trees, mounds, hills, beacons, towers. “Lay low on the surface until the storm is over and avoid streams, rivers, and low lying bridges,” said Dlamini

>> A stiffer sentence is being discussed in Parliament for stolen goods

THE HIGHEST RATE OF THEFT IS VERY DIS TURBING. PEOPLE WHO BUY STOLEN GOODS ARE PLAYING A HUGE ROLE IN CRIME. THEY SHOULD BE REGARDED AS CRIMINALS THEMSELVES.

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE >>nompendulo.ngubane@mye cho.co.za

Police minister Nathi Mthethwa said they are looking at amending the Sec ond Hand Goods Act sentence from the 10 months to 10 years for those caught buying or selling stolen goods.

A

S part of fighting the selling and buying of stolen goods, the Parliament is still discussing the amendments to the Second Hand Goods Act sentence of 10 months sentence to be extended to 10 years sentencing. The

sentence will work against both the seller and the buyer of stolen goods, said police minister Nathi Mthethwa when he visited the Maqonqo area recently. The act was effective from 1 May this year. The Second Hand Goods Act grants the police the right to arrest anyone who sell and buy stolen goods. Mthethwa said they realised that the 10 months sentencing was not enough. He said they are still discussing the amendments of this act, adding that they want to extend the 10 months sentence to 10 years. “The highest rate of theft is very disturbing. People who buy stolen goods are playing a huge role in crime. They should be regarded as criminals themselves. “In May, we launched the Second Hands Goods Act with the intention of fight-

ing theft. Both the buyer and the seller of stolen goods will be held responsible for theft if they are caught with stolen goods. “We are urging the community not to buy stolen goods. This also applies to dealers with the second hand goods. They have to immediately report to the police if they are being sold stolen goods. “Those who are failing to do so will be arrested.Wearesendingamessagetoeverycommunity to report people who are selling stolen goods. The act is working and people are being arrested,” said Mthethwa. •The Second-Hand Goods Act is Act No. 6 of 2009 and it was effective in 1 May 2012. •Second-Hand Goods Act is an important milestone in the process to clean up the secondhand goods industry. •It is an on-going process in which Business against Crime South Africa (BACSA) has worked tirelessly with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and industry stakeholders since 1999.

Swift run winners The Hulamin athletic club, in part nership with the Rotary Club of Pie termaritzburg, recently staged the best ever Swift Half Marathon and fun run. Total income from entries and sponsors Hulamin, KFC and Somta was R125 000 and much of

this is to benefit those living in the Edendale valley where the run was held. Speaking after the event Ro tarian Richard Boote said: “The rain held off and everyone had a won derful day. We thank the traffic officers, police and marshals for the roles they played in making this a bumper year. Our winner in the men’s race was Philani Buthalezi of Klip River running club in a time of 1.07.32 while S. Ngubesi of Phuma Club

came in second in a time of 1.07.46. In the ladies race Makhosi Mhlongo of Savages won in 1.23.13 while Slindile Chili came second in 1.23.50. All runners and walkers had a great time and so we look forward to next year’s event”. In the picture are winners of the 2013 Swift Halfmar athon (back left to right) Philani Buthalezi and S. STUDY BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION PART-TIME The School of Management, Information Technology & Governance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) invites applications from candidates wishing to commence evening classes for studies leading to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in 2014. This after-hours degree programme offered on both the Westville and Pietermaritzburg campuses comprises 24 modules, spread over a minimum period of three years, covering areas such as Macro & Micro Economics, General Management Theory, Quantitative Techniques for Managers, Accounting, Human Resource Management and Employee Relations, Marketing Management, Supply Chain Management, Information Systems and e-Commerce, Entrepreneurship, and Project Management. Lectures will be held on Mondays to Thursdays, from 17h30 to 20h30.

Dineo’s devastated when her own mother shuns her. Ngamla wants to send someone a warning, but gets one instead. Distressed Akhona makes a desperate phone call. Scott is shocked by what he finds at prison. It’s Isabel’s turn to play matchmaker. ISIDINGO KATLEGO casts a terrible spell on her hus band. Benjamin pulls the rug from under Frank’s feet. Lerato tells Sechaba how she really feels. Ben throws down the gauntlet about poor audience numbers and Caitlin rises to the challenge. Sechaba reaches breaking point over Lerato’s cancer. Amu refusestoleavethepenthouseafterJeffer son has told her to go. The ON production team realise that live news is more cut throat than anyone thought possible. Ler ato’s journey into total despair gets an un expected turnaround. Jefferson’s new found social life takes him into a realm no one saw coming. The hacker strikes again and this time brings ON!TV to a full and embarrassing stop. With the prospect of further bad cancer diagnoses hanging over her, Lerato finds solace in the arms of Sechaba. Jefferson strikes up a relation ship with a callgirl. Ben takes control but the enemy is closer than he imagines. Jef ferson Sibeko has a spring in his step and Nikiwe is not impressed. Lerato and Sechaba begin to face the truth. RHYTHM CITY THE war between Victoria and Stella in tensifies. Suffocate assigns Fats, Speshil and Findo to look after his mother. Rose reveals her prejudice about people with HIV in front of Mampho and Reneilwe.

HE Edendale born, former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain, Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela is expected to join Mpumalanga Black Aces at the end of the week. The well-travelled Mabizela is currently on trials with the Mpumalanga-based outfit. According to those close to the

club, Mabizela is stading a good chance to be offered a contract by Aces, but the management is waiting for the green light from the head coach, Clive Barker. “You must remember that Barker and OJ were once together at Bidvest Wits. They are also both from the same province. What is also encour-

aging is that Barker knows the player very well and can talk to him. “Also OJ takes Barker as the father figure for him and can die for him in the field of play,”said an insider. Aces Chaiman Mario Morfou this week confirmed that Mabizela was attending trials at his club and waiting for

Barker to give him the go ahead. “Yes,Mabizelaishereandtraining withtheteam. It’suptohimtoimpress the coach. We are just waiting for the coach to make a decision ,”said Morfou. It is believed that Barker is looking foranexperienceddefenderandmidfielder to bring stability in those de-

partments and Mabizela could be the answer. Barker refused to clarify the matter but pleaded to be given a “couple of days”. Mabizela left relegated Chippa United at the end of last season.-Jerry Barnes

AmaZulu not in crisis IFyouthoughtlosing7-1toMamelodiSundowns a fortnight ago and another 2-0 defeat by Maritzburg United, meant that AmaZulu were in a crisis, you got it all wrong. Usuthu spokesman, Philani Mabaso says although the recent scores were giving a wrong picture about the team’s performance, the situation was all under control. Mabaso insists his management was in touch with the technical team under the head coach, Craig Rosslee and life at the camp is normal. “Such things happens in soccer. Days are not always rosy or smooth. I agree we lost two games in a row, but it does not mean that we are in a crisis or experiencing problems. “We believe we lost because our defence committed a number of mistakes. Soccer is like that, if you committee errors you get punished by your opponents,” said Mabaso. Mabaso says his management trust andsupportRossleeandwerepositivethat the mistakes are going to be rectified. Rosslee believes his defence has improvedsincegoingdown7-1toSundowns. “Although we again lost to United, our defence was looking better. Our opponents scored two goals because we made two defence errors at the back.” Rosslee says the whole team needs to double their effort in the field of play and always stay on top of the game. “It’s just a matter of being more alert all round and in all departments,” he says. *Meanwhile Usuthu’s next fixture will be against Platinum Stars on November 6 at Peter Mokaba stadium. *MaritzburgUnitedwillfaceBloemfontein Celtic at Kaizer Sebothelo on Sunday. *Lamontville Golden Arrows will meet Moroka Swallows on November 6 at King Zwelithini at 7.30 pm. -Jerry Barnes

been a dream come true. I have enjoyed every minute playing alongside top players in South Africa. I have also improved on my football a lot. “The players have been great to me. They have given me advice and I have taken every single bit of it,” said Shandu. He said he could not believe when former Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendrop told him that his first match would be against Amazulu FC. “The last one I knew I would be playing against the big players of Mamelodi Sundowns,” he said. Like any other soccer player he has that one player that he looks up to. “I am a big Chelsea supporter and for me Frank Lampard is the greatest. I spend most of my time watching soccer at the local stadium Wadley in Edendale and playing soccer Fifa play-Station with my little brother Banele, cousin Khanyisa and family friend Sandile Ndlela,” he said. Shandu’s motto in life is: if you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done. Once he is done with his matric he will start playing regularly, he said.

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA IT is important for those in positions to lead by example. The most important unit in football is a club. Danny Jordan, Safa President, for instance cannot talk development if he is not himself involved at club level. We cannot tell people about things that we are not experiencing ourselves. There is no individual that does not belong to a particular community. Political, civic and sports leaders must take a lead in the development of sports in this country. One does not needtobeinvolvedondaytodaybusiness of a club. However, it is not correct that people point fingers without playing some role. Generally, South Africans are too busy chasing power and fortunes. We are all calling for grassroots football to be nurtured. I still have to see 7 and

9 year olds that are capable of organising training and matches. We all get surprised when there are no South African teams in international competitions. If your own sons and daughters are not playing, who do you expect to play for this country? The mindsets must change if our country is to progress. The majority of us think that the world owes useverything.Weseemtobelievethat someone out there must sort things out for us. Every individual within communities must take the responsibility. One is too small a number to do anything of significance. We are always looking for Messiahs to take us to the Promised Land. If it is not Mandela, it is Danny Jordan. There is not much that individuals can do to change the situation. Thepowerlieswithallofus.Danny Jordan cannot form a club in your community, train children, feed them, provide equipment, motivate them in matches etc. The future success of any child depends on the support early in life. They say talk is cheap. Football people are talking about junior leagues for both boys and girls. It is not possible to have leagues when there are no teams. We have a very abnormal situation where universities play women’s football and yet our junior schools have no programmes for football. We even have a Banyana Banyana – National Women Team, yet there are no teams and competitions for young girls. South Africa claims to be the most progressive nation. We have women in top positions both in government and private sector. It is worth noting that there are so many boys’ football competitions at school level, yet nothing for the girls. Yes, talk is cheap, doing is a different story. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Local karatekas go to Switzerland ECHO REPORTER

THREE local karatekas have been chosen to represent South Africa in a world karate tournament taking place ain Genneva in Switzerland next month. The tournament will take place on 23 November. Bonga Ngcobo from Peacevale, Nkosinathi Mlotshwa from Unit 14 in Imbali and

Sandile Thusi from Ntshongweni wereselectedduringaSouthAfrican karate championship last month. KwaZulu-Natal karate president Shihan Cassim Cele said: “It is an honour for us that out of all the provinces three local people were chosen. “Pietermaritzburg might be a small city, but it shows that our work

is not recognised only nationally, but also internationally. “This is also a motivation to work even harder to get the sport recognized, since it is neglected in our province. There is no support or funding for big tournaments like this”. The team will leave on 21 November and will be back on 27 November.
