HILDREN dying due to electrocution by exposed electricity wires from illegal connections will soon be a thing of thepastforSwaporesidents, aswell as those in other informal settlement areas. Delivering his ‘State of the City Address’ at the Royal Showgrounds on Monday, Msunduzi Municipality Mayor Chris Ndlela said that, in conjuction with the Department of Energy, the municipality has funded the integrated national electrification project and 2000 homes from the Swapo community will benefit. “This project, and another in Ezinketheni, will be completed before December this year while another in Peace Valley will be completed at the end of the 2014/15 financial year. “More areas will be identified through IDP [integrated development project] processes accordingly,” said Ndlela. While seven people, including children, were reported to have died of electrocution in the Jika Joe informal settlement, more than five children have died in Swapo after

touching electricity wires used by residents to steal electricity from nearby lamp poles and substations. Ndlela said that they are also providing electricity to Vulundlela. “...constant communication has been taking place between the [municipal] council and Eskom and high masts for phase one will be connected this week,” he said. Recently, Ndlela and then KZN Finance MEC Ina Cronje launched an electrification project for Nhlalakahle residents in the Northdale area. “By the end of October, the 600 homes in the community of Nhlalakahle will benefit from an electrification project, thanks to a partnership with the KZN Provincial Treasury” assured Ndlela. The illegal electricity connections are a big concern to the municipality and it has started an offensive to bring this to an end. “Illegal connections and nonpayment of electricity are a thorn in our side, not only because we have lost a lot of money but also because we have lost people,” said Ndlela. He said that from July to December alone, seven people lost their lives in Jika Joe and the municipality lost one of its staff members, while others were injured due to

interference with electricity. All the houses will be electrified despite their conditions, and the municipality will only build better ones when the budget permits. Ndlela was delivering the inaugural ‘State of the City Address’ which was themed ‘Msunduzi, a good story to tell’. He pointed to the delivery of houses, water and electricity as things that were demanded by many struggle hero’s from the apartheid regime as a part of service delivery. He said that if they were alive today, they would be happy to see the change in the lives of many people. He said these include John Langalibalele Dube, iNkosi Albert Luthuli, Harry Gwala, Nelson Mandela, Lilian Ngoyi, AS Chetty, Oliver Tambo, Wally Adams, Helen Suzman, Peter Kerchoff, Chris Hani, Moses Mabhida and Anton Mfenendala Xaba. He also singled out Councillor Truman Magubane as one of the living struggle heroes who can attest to the positive work that has been done to improve service delivery since 1994. His address, which was attended by councillors, business leaders and MP’s, mirrored the State of the

Province Address by Premier Senzo Mchunu last Thursday, and the State of the Nation Address by President Jacob Zuma held recently. Ndlela said that the main aim was to report back to the citizens of the municipality about the progress that has been made since the establishment of the municipality 18 years ago. He said ‘the State of the City Address will be budgeted for as an annual event He, however, said it does not replace izimbizo which are still to continue.

Offensive to rid city of street children DUMISANI ZONDI

>>dumisani@myecho.co.za THEstreetchildrenlivingnexttoUpperCrust in the city centre are to be chased away, as they pose a threat to the city traders, according to mayor Chris Ndlela. Ndlela unveiled the municipal plan to move the children who have made a home for themselves along Hesom street, between Upper Crust and Jonathan’s Spar, as he delivered his ‘State of the City Address’ at the Royal Showgrounds on Monday. “The street kids are going to leave. We can’t allow that kind of practise within our governance precinct,” said Ndlela. It is believed that some of the street children intimidate traders with their unruly behaviour. Ndlela said that a place will have to be found to accommodate them or they “must just go back to their various homes.” “They must just go, they must go somewhere else or go back home,” suggested the mayor. Many might be relieved to hear the news, as complaints have often been raised about these children in this particular area. It is suspected that some of the children living in the lane, and those who used to live on Henrietta street, relieve themselves wherever they please as they do not have access to the public toilets at night. KZN Social Development spokesperson Ncumisa Fandesi responded by saying it would be correct to engage the city rather than the department. “This is a mayoral programme and I am not going to allow you to ask me about a municipal programme,” she said, adding that whatever the municipality decides to do about these children, they will be part of it as a department. She said as a department, they have not received any complaints about the children or their conduct in the lane.

Kuber tobacco is dangerous

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

T

HE number of high school girls hooked on Kuber tobacco is increasing. According to Plessislaer Youth Desk chairperson Sbonelo Shangase, some of the girls have confessed that they use the drug because their parents use it at home. Kuber is a chewable tobacco, rich in nicotine, which is labelled as a breath freshener and sold in shops in plastic sachets for R2.50. Another concern that Shangase raised is that most of the users don’t chew this tobacco, but rather insert it inside their private parts. “This is a foreign drug which is found in Chinese shops. The private parts of a female, are very sensitive and need to be handled with care. “Just take a normal cigarette and inhale the smoke. It’s sensitive to the nose and that is an indication that it is harmful and it causes danger,” said Dr Nomathemba Singaphi. She said that African people strongly believethatcancerisaforeigndiseaseandthat is absolutely not true. “By inserting these things inside their private parts, they are inviting diseases like cancer. This drug may have a chemical that is dangerous to the body and that may result in exposing the body to diseases. “There are myths about these things; there are people who are drawing young girls into buying these things, telling them that these drugs stimulate sex. That is a lie. What these things do to the human body is destroy,” she said. Singaphi added that the myth that these drugs can stimulate their sex lives leads to unsafe sex which is often followed by unwanted pregnancy and abortion.

>> Kuber is becoming a problem amongst the youth who are using it as a sexual stimulant

KUBER IS A NEW DRUG CONTAINING TOBACCO THAT IS NOTCOMPLIANTTO SOUTH AFRICAN STANDARDS. MAKING IT ILLEGAL Side effects of the drugs >> Dizziness, headaches, sleeping, weak teeth and gum bleeding. >> In the long run, the after effects could cause tooth discoloration, holes on the gum line and cervical cancer. Sometimes women can become infer tile. >> A further caution is that Kuber is a cause for concern because of the mental health issues associated with it. >> It impairs memory and causes depression even mere addiction to it is a mental problem. Fingernail shock

>> Women finds human fingernail in her bowl of 2Minute Noodles

PHOTO: DUMISANI ZONDI

The fingernail which Mabizela says came out of the noodles she ate with her daugher Philile. She says this caused them running stomachs and and vomiting.

PANORAMA Gardens woman and her 13 year-old daughter suspect that a fingernail allegedly found in a pack of Nestle noodles is the cause of their runningstomachandvomitingsince 9 June. Rosemary Mabizela said that on the day she prepared the noodles and ate them, she discovered a human fingernail in the food. “Something prickled my tongue as I was chewing and I picked it out

withmyfingers.Ithenrealiseditwas a human fingernail and I was so shocked,” she said. Mabizela said she subsequently began to have a runny stomach before vomiting. To her surprise, her daughter Philile too suffered the same fate later that week. She used the telephone contacts on the packet to phone Nestle to complain. “Nestle then sent a courier company to come and collect the packet and the fingernail, but I gave them the packet only.

“They left without taking anything. I want to keep the fingernail as evidence. “I had to go to the doctor on 11 June. I left my daughter behind because hers was not as serious as yet. But I had to take her as well to the doctor on Saturday, 21 June since the sickness did not stop,” explained Mabizela. Mabizela said it was only when her daughter got worse that she admitted that she had “stolen” her mothers noodles from the bowl on her return from school. “There are five of us here at home but only the two of us are sick. This is clear proof that the source of the sickness is that packet of noodles that had the nail in it. All other family members are fine. “Nestle keeps sending for the nail but I’m not going to give it to anyone because if we die, people need to know the cause,” said Mabizela. Nestlé South Africa spokesperson Motshidisi Mokwena said Mabizela’s refusal to hand over the nail has prevented them from investigating the matter, adding that the safety and quality of their products are non-negotiable and they have strict measures in place to ensure that. “Untilwereceivetheforeignbody from the consumer, there is no further action that we can take. “We have informed Mrs Mokwenathatwearestillwaitingfor her to reconsider in order for us to conduct the investigation,” said Mokwena.

ETIRED staff member and dear friend of the KwaZuluNatal Museum, Mabongi Mtshali, spends many of her Saturday afternoons with a group of children teaching them how to crochet and sew. The group of about seven children are between the ages of 10 and 12, and live nearby Mtshali’s home in Caluza near Edendale. They meet on Saturday afternoons when they are available and spend time together crocheting. Mtshali said that she began teaching them how to sew which started with making dolls which she got from Australia. “When it got to making the hair for the dolls, we had to knit and crochet.” Together, the group has crocheted a blanket and areinthefinalstagesofcompletingitnowthatexams

are over. This is all as a result of the hype surrounding the exciting 67 Blankets for Madiba that has captured the attention of the whole world. Echo met the group at the KwaZuluNatal Museum recently. They were excited to show off their blanket, dolls and brought along their needles and wool to crochet in the museum. Viranna Frank, from the museum marketing department, said that they are going to incorporate the project into the museum Democracy Display, which celebrates 20 years of Democracy. “The project will be included in the Democracy Display with pictures, the actual completed blanket and a poster or banner with a further explanation about the initiative highlighting the effort of the children involved,” she said. The exhibition will open on 9 August. To donate wool, needles, old pieces of material to the group contact Frank at 033 341 0500.

S hops a ct ffor or Shops act cclean lean C BD CBD Group led by Asmalls seek to adopt block to implement New York plan NALINI NAIDOO PHOTOS: JONATHAN BURTON

Prince George Street off Retief Street the city’s open air toilet.

The road and pavement smell of human waste.

E

VERY morning, staff at Asmalls in Retief Street have to navigate their way through a smelly sea of urine and faeces. The back of their premises on Prince George Street is being used as a public toilet. For more than a year, staff members have been cleaning up the mess themselves, but now Asmalls director Yunus Asmall asks how long can they go on doing this. He said the staff who do the cleaning do it voluntarily but that the situation had become exploitative and untenable. This, plus the feeling that the Msunduzi Municipality had abandoned downtown Pietermaritzburg, motivated Asmalls to invite other businesses in the Retief Street area to form a committee to look at revamping their block. Businesses involved include Ellerines, Quickserve, Nu Shop, Waltloo and Ballims Pharmacy. They want to adopt the block and embark on revamp, but in order to do so in a sustainable manner they need buy-in

from the municipality. However all attempts to get senior municipal officials to attend their meetings have proved fruitless. “This area was ignored and neglected during the apartheid era and it seems the same thing is happening now,” said Asmall. Kantha Naidoo, HR manager and legal adviser at Asmalls, said safety and security had become a major issue. “When there is a breakdown in law and order, it is very easy for crime to thrive. This is what we found was happening — the piles of rubbish, the traffic chaos and uncontrolled informal trading that was allowed to mushroom has made it easy for muggersandpickpocketstooperateinthe area.” According to Naidoo, the group started meetinginlate2013andtheSouthAfrican Police Service had come on board. She praised Brigadier Johan Reynders and Warrant Officer Farouk Khan for their interest and involvement. They have also had representatives from the Cato Ridge Taxi Association attend their meetings, wanting to play their part. The taxi associ-

ation bemoans the lack of ablution facilities for their passengers. The businesses have tried to keep the areas around their shops clean, but they feel that they are fighting a losing battle. This is why they are looking for a more long-term and sustained plan of urban renewal for their precinct. Asmall said they were mindful of the fact that there were certain formal businesses contributing to the mayhem and this was why upgrading the area would also require the strict enforcement of regulations and bylaws. For Naidoo what they are trying to achieve is similar to New York City’s broken window policy — fix the little things to help crime diminish. She said all they want is a clean-up, a fix-up and a facelift of the area and they do not expect the municipality to do everything. “It is about a partnership. We’ve been asking how can we work together to uplift thisareaandmakeitsafeforresidentsand visitors to the city,” she said. Champion of the city’s Urban Renewal Project, Madeleine Jackson-Plaatjies, has welcomed the initiative. She invited the group to contact her office so that a meeting can be scheduled between representatives of the Retief Street Precinct committee and relevant senior municipal managers. “They can present their ideas and we canworkonfinding middlegroundsothat we can work together for the betterment of our capital city,” Jackson-Plaatjies said. She added that the municipality was working on developing a plan that will deal with the cleanliness of the city on a sustainable basis. “This plan will be put into motion early in the new financial year, which starts in July, when we will be in a position to access funding from the Expanded Public WorksProgramme.Thedeputymunicipal manager for community services, Boniwe Zulu, will manage this programme as part of the Pietermaritzburg Urban Renewal Programme,” Jackson-Plaatjies added.

A call to the youth

12

CRIME in Imbali has become such an is sue that it has warranted a youth con vention by local churches in a bid to fight its scourge. Reverend Mkhothameli Bongimpi lo Shamase said the twoday youth convention is scheduled to begin with a parade from Mehlokazulu to Zama zulu secondary school, which is the venue of the convention, at 1pm on Saturday. He said this stems from reports and observations that youth from these schools and others are responsible for mugging others as they go to school.

Uthe: “Baningi abesifazane abajwayele ukuhlanga bezana nezinkinga lapho ubaba wekhaya esedlulile emhlabeni ngoba abanye abesilisa abakhona embonini yamatekisi bavele basithathe noma yikanjani. Bavele bakuyise lena nalena baze bagcine sebekukhomba embh edeni ukuze uthole amakhumbi omkh wenyana. Abanye besifazane bagcina sebephelelwe amandla okulwa ngoba abakwazi ukusizakala.” UNksz Winnie Msimang osese benze embonini yamatekisi iminyaka eyi10,uthe:“SicelauHulumeniasikhu lumele namagaraji adayisa izimoto ukuba asehlisele inani lamakhumbi ngoba njalo ekupheleni kwenyanga sigcina sesikhokha izindodla zemali yeinstallment.” UNondaba unezezele wathi: “Thina sisebenze kanzima ukuthi lento yenu ibekhona futhi sisazosebenza kanzima ukuthi iqhubeke ize ibe khona kuzwelonke.Asizovumaukuthiabantu bayone.”

KUHLE LOKHO. Kodwa indaba isekuthini ngabe labo abaziqhenya ngokuzalwa ngosuku olufanayo naleli qhawe baziphathisa okwalo yini? Angingabazi ukuthi wonke umuntu uyazi ukuthi uTata uMadiba ubengezwani nabantu abanamanga. Ezinkulumweni zakhe, ubehlale egcizelela ukuthi enye yezinto ezibaluleke kakhulu empilweni, yindlela

umuntu aziphatha ngayo. Ubethi kufanele wonke umuntu aqikelele ukuthi indlela aziphatha ngayo inomthelela omuhle ezimpilweni zabanye. Iziphathimandla zanquma ukuthi minyaka yonke ngomhla ka-18 kuNtulikazi, kube nemizuzu engama-67 lapho wonke umuntu kufanele enze okuthile okuhle. Ngalolu suku sibona uthando nokukhuthala okuyisimanga. Ubona nabantu ongakaze ubabone bedlubhe ama-avaloli, begcwele ezindaweni eziningi bekhuculula udoti, bependa, behambela amakhaya abadala(old age homes) bebageza, bengena bededelana lapho kuhlala khona izintandane beyotshengisa uthando. NALOKHO KUHLE. Kukhona nalabo abangaphumeleli ngezizathu ezahlukene ukubonakala bebamba iqhaza emisebenzini emihle okufanelwe yenzelwe umphakathi ngalolu suku, kodwa abamane banikelengemali, bangatshelimuntukube wukwazi kwabo bodwa. UNDREDS of performers braved the gloomy weather in PMB recently to audition for The X Factor, South Africa’s newest reality show, at the Royal Showgrounds. Executive producer Kee-Lin Irvine said: “In terms of the different regions we had a great turnout, especially as we had the Durban auditions just a couple of weeks ago. We had a few hundred people, both groups and solo acts ... and we are getting a lot more women than men entering, so that’s interesting.” Irvine said that some of the wannabes had travelled from East London and Queenstown in the Eastern Cape to audition for the show’s producers. Others travelled from Kokstad and some of

those turned away in Durban came through to try their luck again. The Pietermaritzburg auditions complete the regional phase of the singing contest. For those lucky enough to impress the producers, the next step will be to perform in front of the show’s judges at the end of July. Thejudges’auditionswillberecordedaslive and then broadcast when the show, which will be hosted by Andile Ncube, airs on SABC1 from September 6. The X Factor is one of world’s biggest and most successful singing competitions. Created by media mogul Simon Cowell, it was a launching pad for both Leona Lewis and One Direction. For the South African winner a recording contract with Sony Music and R300 000 prize money awaits at the grand finale in Durban on December 13.

Why so difficult to volunteer?

Weneedtotellthecouncillors, innoun certain terms, that their indifference to our complaints will not be tolerated. We want to see service delivery and ethical leader ship. If our councillors are not interested in doing their jobs diligently, we should ask them to resign. Some believe that we should be privileged to get a hearing from them. They owe it to us for the positions they hold, and not vice versa. Pietermaritz burg residents deserve better. IN order to address constructively Pieter maritzburg’s crisis, residents should approach their ward councillors and outline their grievances. We should ask them critical questions regarding the sad state of our city and its suburbs. They are responsible for much of the service delivery that affects our daily lives. Councillors are the legitimate link be tween communities and the municipality. If the municipality is not delivering, it is the responsibility of the councillor to bring it to the attention of the city council. A FORMER Witness and Echo sports journalist, I am currently unemployed. I keep myself busy by giving my service to Echo free of charge. In order to keep my writing skills sharp, I also freelance for other local publications in KwaZulu-Natal. I also do some voluntary work for Gift Of the Givers and the local ANC branch. I am very active in my area - Ward 34(Eastwood,Glenwood,Panorama, Cinderella Park and Thembalihle) -and keep myself busy doing community projects. For the past two years, I have been asking the Northdale Hospital management if I

can become one of its volunteers in any department, but nobody is prepared to give me a chance, or at least a straight answer, and I am tired of being sent from pillar to post. Unfortunately, my area is known to be a drug lord and gangster’s paradise. The unemployment rate is high, but some of us who were lucky and learnt skills are trying to give back to the Pietermaritzburg community and are being rejected. Why is it such a mission to volunteer at government departments, in the local business sector and especially at Northdale Hospital? JERRY BARNES Eastwood

SILVER Heights Secondary School held its annual fundraising golf tournament recently at Howick Golf Club. The school is indebted to the Midlands Golf Club for bringing teachers, golfers and the business sector together in a highly successful event. The funds that have been raised provide a necessary source of upliftment for the school.

The school is faced with the task of renovating an ageing infrastructure and the support the school is receiving is very important. Once again, my sincere thanks to all roleplayers. DINA MOODLEY Principal: Silver Heights Seconday School

Toyota Etios 1.5XS Hatchback at Top Gear

The new VW polo boasts sharper lines and greater sophistication.

The new Polo's interior boasts new features.

S

INCE its launch in 2010, the VW Polo hatch has consistently been the second bestselling passenger car in South Africa. The new Polo has been enhanced both visually and technically. The driver assistance and infotain ment systems as well as the new TSI engines and the award winning DSG gearbox, have taken the new Polo toanotherlevel.ThankstotheseTSIengines, thenew Polo’s fuel economy has been improved by as much as 20%. Visually, the new Polo can be identified by a sharper front and rear design. In addition, the new modelintroducesfreshcolours, newinteriormaterials and new specifications. The new Polo now comes in three equipment levels: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. Customers who want a Polo with rugged but sporty looks can opt for the CrossPolo. Assistance systems that are traditionally associ ated with cars found in upper segments have found their way into the new Polo. For example, the Polo is the first vehicle in its class to include an automatic postcollision braking system, which automatically initiates braking once it has been in an accident, in order to prevent a subsequent collision. The radio has been upgraded to a modular infotainment system. Depending on the equipment level, thisincludefunctionssuchasbluetoothconnec tivity and a proximity sensor.

This sophisticated design of the Polo has now been made even more precise, and the newly de signed headlights and tail lights have their very own charisma. The new Polo has been launched with fuel efficient TSI engines. Initially only the fourcylinder 1.2 TSI engines are available, with power outputs of 66kW and 81kW. The entrylevel derivative’s TSI engine delivers an output of 66kW at 4 800rpm. The claimed combined fuel consumption of this engine is as low as 4.9l/100km. This engine is mated to a fivespeed manual transmission, and is available with the Trendline and Comfortline derivatives. The higher specification model is the 1.2 TSI, which delivers an output of 81kW at 5 000rpm, and attains a fuel consumption value of 5.1 l/100km. The 81kW engine is available in the Highline derivatives as well as the CrossPolo. An extra safety feature, known as the Driver Alert system, is standard in Highline derivatives. It detects when a driver’s concentration begins to wane, and emits an acoustic sound, while a message appears in the instrument cluster recommending a break from driving. The new Polo comes standard with a 3 year/45 000kmServicePlan,3year/120000kmwarrantyand a 12 year anticorrosion warranty. Service interval is 15 000km.

Lexus has come out tops in recent vehicle quality awards. LEXUS has once again proven its reputation for high quality and reliability with the luxury marque dominating the 2014 J.D. Power vehicle dependability study. Lexus had the lowest number of faults of the 32 vehicle brands involved, recording only almost half the industry average. The brand took honours in all four vehicle segments of the study, conducted by US information services company McGraw Hill. Lexus ES 350, GS, LS and RX all received the highest scores for dependability and quality in the survey. The J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by the original owners of threeyear-oldvehicles(carsbuiltin2011)across202 different areas of the vehicle.

A vehicle’s overall reliability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles, with the lowest score indicating the greatest reliability. J.D. Power global automotive vice president Dave Sargent said Lexus is leading the industry in reliability by a substantial margin. “Vehicle dependability has been a strength of Lexus since it came on to the market, and this year is no exception,” Mr Sargent said. In 2014, Lexus had 34% less issues than its nearest rival, and scored over 48% better than the industry average. J.D. Power claims that the Vehicle Dependability Study is used extensively by manufacturers to help produce better vehicles, which often translates to higher resale values and customer loyalty.

A problem of identity THABO DLADLA IT is now history that Spain was knocked out of the 2014 World Cup in group stages. Does this make their philosophy less relevant or outdated? It would be naïve to think along these lines. In fact it is a sign of ignorance. All the great football nations have philosophies that form the foundation of their football. It is not possible to be another person. Presently, South African football has a problem of identity. We have failed to recognizethatwearedifferent toothernationsinmanyways. Presently, all the nations in this tournament play differently, mainly because they are different people. I am sure the way they

dance, pray, celebrate, the food they eat, customs and culture etc. is different. We are probably one of the few nations that have tried every other nation’s philosophies. It is easy in South Africa for foreigners to impose their ideas. In fact, the powers that be will give you all the support as long as you come from abroad. We still have a long way to go before overcoming the effects of colonialism. The challenge is to outgrow the stage of information and knowledge consumption. We need to begin developing football coaching material based on the qualities, culture, strengths and mentality of South African footballers. Thisrequiresresearch, observation and lots of experimenting.

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA The year 2014 was the end of an era for the Xavi group in the Spanish national team. This is a group of players that have won almost everything in football history. Spanish football remains powerful because of the foundation laid over the past 20 years. South Africans need to focus on their challenges and start doing the right and correct things. There are no short cuts in life. Unzima Lomthwalo!

Budding cricketers celebrate their victory at the 2013 Sunfoil Township Tournament.

A

GROUP of 300 gifted young cricketers from KZN, Gauteng, Border, Griqualand West and Western Province have taken to the fields of Hilton College for the 2014 Sunfoil Township Tournament, now in its seventh year. The tournament is a key element of a successful development programme run by the Kwazulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) and Willowton Group, manufacturers of Sunfoil cooking oil, to give disadvantaged youngsters the opportunity to compete against other quality players in match conditions to boost their skills and confidence. The ultimate goal of all players is to be selected for the elite Sunfoil development teamwhichwillbeannounced at the end of the tournament. “This year’s tournament promises a higher standard of play than ever before,” said Linda Zondi, the KZNCU’s Township Development Manager. The format remains the same. Twenty-four teams made up of 12 Under-19 and 12 Under-15 sides will play 49 matches, with 20 overs per match. “We have introduced some changes. We will be playing on

two fields this year instead of one. We have also invited a fourth province from outside KZN to participate. Griqualand West will be joining Gauteng, Border and Western Province in bringing one Under-15 and one Under-19 team each to the tournament,” said Zondi. Shoaib Moosa, Sales and Marketing Director of Willowton Group said that The Sunfoil Township Cricket programme is inspiring young cricketers to develop a love for the sport. “There is no doubt that we are seeing an increasing general awareness of the sport in the townships, along withanever-growingenthusiasm for the game amongst disadvantaged youngsters as a result of our development partnership with the KZNCU,” Moosa said. Moosa and Zondi believe that the annual Sunfoil Township Tournament has been a major factor in the success of the 55 township teams playing in the Durban and District Cricket Union league in the 2013/14 season. “We were delighted to see five of the teams win their league. Our kids are scoring runs and taking wickets. Now, when they play league games, they play to win. Before, they

went out to play with the attitude that they would be beaten,” said Zondi. Two of the township players have also been accepted into the Suncoast Cricket Academy which is the training ground for the Dolphins B team. There are six township boys attending Glenwood Prep on School financial assistance and another ten who are being educated at other respected schools with KZN, the assistance of sponsors like Super Sport and other families within these schools have played a major role in this regard. “It is also rewarding to see that four township girls were chosen to represent KZN Provincial Under-19 team last year,” Zondi said. Apart from the 300 players taking part in the Sunfoil Township Tournament, there is a working committee of almost 150 people who score and coach, selectors, umpires all of whom will be staying at Hilton College’s world class facilities this week. The tournament is an excellentopportunityforplayers to gain match awareness and enhance their performance but it also gives coaches the opportunity to improve their skills, Zondi believes.

T’S official. Maritzburg United is here to stay. Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela said that the local football club will not leave theHarryGwalaStadiumandthecityfor Port Elizabeth as its home base. Although he did not have the figures on him, Ndlela said that the deal is better than the three-year sponsorship of R36 million which had been put on the table by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Ndlela said that there are a number of stakeholders involved in the new deal. He also added that Maritzburg United’s presence in the city is good for local football enthusiasts who want to pursue a career in the football world. Ndlela said that the Msunduzi

Municipality will be the guarantor for Maritzburg United’s annual sponsorship, and said that they are aiming to get the sponsorship from various stakeholders “Maritzburg United’s presence is good for Pietermaritzburg. The youngsters begin to aspire to be professional football players because they watch professional football week in and week out. Also, sports fans take time to watch football. “The offer is better than what was being offered in the Eastern Cape. But obviously we have put other conditions which will see the city and the people of the province as well as the people of the district of uMgungundlovu deriving some benefits out of it,” said Ndlela. The sponsorship is reportedly worth R12 million a year. “Coming in as a guarantor, we are

mindful that if we don’t succeed in raising what we have guaranteed, we will foot the bill as the council. But we believe it is worth doing that in the interest of the citizens of the city. “We are hoping that we will get the guarantee we have made to them from the private sector. If we don’t, full council endorsed that we serve as the guarantor,” said Ndlela. Maritzburg United’s marketing and communications manager Brian Zuma also released a media statement confirming the news. “The chairman and the board were appreciative of the gesture by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality for a very good and tempting offer they had made to the club, but believed that remaining in Pietermaritzburg was the more reasonable option in the long run,” he stated.

MARITZBURG United is likely to be dominated by new faces after an exodus of players. Anencouragingthoughthoweveristhatthe Team of Choice management and its technical bench is working hard to form an all round balance in the side. At the end of last season, contracts of ageing Delron Buckley, Pieter Petersen, Dillon Sheppard and Robyn Johannes were offloaded. While the former Orlando Pirates star left back Ruben Cloete followed his former coach Ernst Middendorp to Bloemfontein Celtic. Hard working midfield anchor, and former Bidvest player Michael Morton returned to GautengandSuperSportUnited, andmidfielder and Soweto born Bongolethu Jayiya went backtoWitsafteraloanspellinPMB.Thelatest crew to exit to Gauteng is United’s defence backbone Rheece Evans and Mario Booysen, who joined the tycoons of South African soccer Mamelodi Sundowns. The departure of so many players may look daunting for United’s head coach Steve Komphela, but the situation is under control and some changes were overdue. Financial challenges and lack of major sponsor were some of the reasons that change was needed. The Team of Choice management cannotaffordsuchhighpaidplayersorplayers that spend the majority of their season being sick. The good news is that Abel Mabaso (right back), Rodney Ramagalela (striker) and Kwanda Mngonyana (centre back) are expected to come on board from Sundowns. United’s chairman Farouk Kadodia recently confirmed that negotiations are currently on going with the Pretoria outfit. Meanwhile AmaZulu general manager Peter O’Connor says the club are still on the lookout for players in two positions as they prepare to step up their pre-season training this week, their second one back following the off-season. Usuthu made a low-key return to their People’s Park training base last week with some of their new signings like Sadate OuroAkoriko, who signed from Free State Stars, and ex-University of Pretoria and Lamontville Golden Arrows goalkeeper Siya Mngoma in attendance.
