ITH rape of the elderly appearing to be on the increase, a martial arts instructor from Edendale is on a mission to teach women how to defend themselves. Sensei Xolani ‘Sonic’ Ndlovu, originally from Mandeni, is a ‘kyokushinkai’ karate instructor who is also a power-lifter. Last Thursday he hosted a karate

demonstration at the Freedom Square taxi rank. Speaking to Echo, Ndlovu, who is a third dan black belt, said: “This is not just any demonstration; I want to let people know that I am available and they can use my skills. “Thecurrent challengethat we face is the escalating rape rate, and women donotknowhowtodefendthemselves. “They panic and end up being victims. “I want to teach them self defence classes, because I believe that every

woman should be armed with self defence”. Ndlovu started karate aged eightyears, and says he has never looked back. Other than karate, he is also a taebo instructor at Body Dynamics. “I believe that everything starts with a healthy diet and exercise. “I am prepared to be used by the Department of Health as an ambassador, or any governmental department which can use my skills to permeate their message,” said Ndlovu.

Zuma did not need Malema to be president Esethu Hasane

T

HE Economic Freedom Fighters party has start ed selling itself to the South African voters but it does not have its own policies. Instead it cop ied and pasted the ANCYL’s policies which are directly drawn from the freedom charter. In simple terms, Floyd Shivambu and Julius Malema stole ANC policies and made them their own. There is a lot I can say about Malema and his party but the first obvious one is that he is not to be trusted by anyone; not even his close friends. Malema chang es his mind like the Cape Town sky changes its weath er. Who would forget when Malema stood in front of thecountrythroughthemedia, healwaysexcites, tell ing us that Thabo Mbeki was this country’s biggest problem? Mbeki was cast by him, called him names and made him an enemy of the people. Not even four years after that we were told by the same man that Mbeki was the greatest man that ever lived. He worshipped him and thanked him for what he achieved in his administration simply because of his hate for Zuma. Zuma, the man he confessed his love for, was later said to be the worst leader this country has ever had and our biggest mistake; a man he (Malema) was made to believe by his friends and the media to have put in power in the Polokwane. I simply cannot trust Malema because he changes his mind like a child in a toystore. The media and some within the ANCYL during his tenuremadehisheadbig.Theymadehimbelievethat he made Zuma. That he gave Zuma to us South Afri cans, making him our president. Thus he now through the same media that made his head big, apologise for giving us Zuma. Malema did not give us Zuma. Zuma gave himself to us the people. Zuma gave himself to South Africa when he joined the ANC at the age of 16 and later became an active member of the ANC’s armed wing Umkhonto Wesizwe at the age of 22. Zuma continued to hand himself to the ANC and South Africa when he was arrested in 1963 and sent toRobbenIslandwherehewastospendthefollowing 10 years. He selflessly reestablished ANC underground struc tures in Natal between 1974 and 1975. Zuma continued to hand himself to the ANC and South Africa when he worked hand in hand with Thabo Mbeki in Swaziland and Mozambique exiled by the apartheid government later healing the wounds of the Soweto Uprising youth of 1976 that were taking refuge in those countries in 1976. In the same year Zuma handed himself to the ANC National Excecutive Committee. In 1980 Zuma fur ther deepened his commitment to the organisation and headed the ANC’s Intelligence Department. Malema would later be born in 1981; 23 years after Jacob Zuma joined and worked for the ANC. Malema’s contribution to the liberation struggle would later be illegally taking down National Party (NP) posters in the 1994 elections. While he was taking down and tearing NP posters, Zuma was working hand in hand with ANC leaders like Nelson Mandela, Mbeki and Walter Sisulu in the negotiations and the drafting of the South African constitution. After the country’s first democratic election, when Julius was only 14 years, Zuma became the ANC’s chairperson in 1994 and MEC for Economic Affairs and Tourism in KZN. To get to my point; Jacob Zuma did not need Julius to get the presidency of the ANC and South African government. He has been working and earned enough credentials to get these positions since he joined the ANC from his early age of 16. This point would later be proven fact in Mangaung when Zuma won with a landslide victory against Kgalema Montlante when Malema was history. Zuma is 100 times more than the man, leader and strategist Malema is. Iknow, manyofyouwillcompareZumawithMalema. You will ask: why complain about Malema in the Gupta and Nkandla days? Government scandals happen everywhere; they hap pen in America, president Obama has his own scan

dals. They happen in UK, in China; all governments have their own scandals. We don’t want them, we hate them but they are there; they will always occur. One needs to ask themselves then how many scan dals would occur if Malema would become a presi dent. Malema’s decision to start a political party was not based on moral or Freedom Charter grounds; it was based on his greed for power and money and his sub liminal talks are a living testimony to this. Malemawastheonewhosaidhisbloodisgreen, black and gold; that he will never leave the ANC. He was the one begging the delegate with letters in Man gaung to reconsider their decision to expel him. He is the one who promised to change. But when his plea did not work out and his life started to turn upside down he started realising that he is poor and power less. In an interview on SAfm, Malema said if the ANC had not taken his farm after it took his house in Sandton and his millions he would have stayed. Only ignorant people believe Malema when he says he left the ANC because its liberal and does not want to nationalise th mines or because he was expelled. Malema, unlike Zuma, is young; he would have made his way back to the ANC. Political parties are not like businesses, you don’t get fired and never come back. Leadership changes and so does the weather within the political party. He could have waited for his time; until when, I don’t know. I am sure Nelson Mandela too did not know how many years he would wait to get out prison. The same followers Malema has are the same he was lying to while he the ANCYL president. He went to the people and shouted that: “We are poor and hungry, wewantEconomicFreedom”whenhewasswimming in millions. The Economic Freedom Fighters he is now calling for is the one he lost; he was a Sandton resident, drove top class cars and wore only the finest. Malema was not hungry or poor like most of his fol lowers were and still are; he had Economic Freedom and soon lost it. His friends like the former jailbird who, like him, went mysteriously from being a pauper to be a millionaire, Kenny Kunene, will help him. We’ve already read opportunistic open letters trying to persuade and kill the ANC’s image by Kenny Kunene. Again, the same media that inflated Male ma’s head is doing the same to Kenny. Suddenly, he becomes a saint just few months after he confessed to raping young girls and his desires to start selling pornography. I refuse to trust Malema because I can’t imagine South Africa with him as a president and Kenny Kunene his deputy. I don’t trust Julius because he would ruin all attempts to Unite this country and turn us into another Zimba bwe; chasing white people away, chasing investors away, ruining our economy and turning this country not into a banana but into Kenny’s Sushi Nation. The ANC and EFF are fundamentally different. Unlike EFF, the ANC is not owned by a person or a group of people. It was not owned by Nelson Mandela when hewaspresidentandwasnotownedbyThaboMbeki, it’s also not owned by Jacob Zuma, the people own it. ANC leaders come and go but their support does not change; it’s a different story with EFF. Malema, Floyd and Kenny Kunene own it, not the people. It will take their directions not the people’s direction. Again, I simply refused a spineless man like Julius Malema, who says EFF today and might say let’s go back to the ANC when the media frenzy fades away and is dropped like Cope and UDP were. Trusting Malema for nationalisation is like trusting or sending a rat to share cheese with cats. (NB I did not say Malema is a rat). *Esethu Hasane is a final year student at the UniversityofCapeTowninpursuitofaB.soc.sc Degreee with majors in International Relations, Public Policy and Medie. How society promotes crime

Regan Jules-Macquet

N

OW that the latest crime statistics have been released, this is a good time for us to start asking ourselves some difficult yet highly relevant questions. We are all concerned about crime in South Africa. We wish to be safe in our homes, in our workplaces and in our communities. We want our children to grow up in a safer South Africa. We want our crime prevention strategies to yield better results. Let us pause for a moment and consider what we expect from prison. We want perpetrators of crimes to be caught and effectively punished. We also want something to be done with them so that when they re-enter society, theyarelesslikelytocommitsimilar offences and victimise other people. What role does prison play in this? Do we regard prison just as a punishment? Or is prison supposed to be re-

habilitative, as well as punitive? Do weexpectpeoplecomingoutofprison to behave differently from how they behaved before they were in prison? Why would we expect people who have spent years in an overcrowded, under-resourced environment to behave like solid upstanding citizens whentheyarereleased?Isthisexpectation even rational? What do we expect people to do in prison while they wait out their sentence?Doweexpectthemtoworkand earn their keep? How do we expect themtoworkwhenmostofthemhave no skills or work experience? Do we expect them to study and earn qualifications that they can use when they arereleased?Howcanweexpectpeople who rarely have finished school, many of which can barely hold a pen correctly, let alone read and write, to acquire qualifications? And when the rare few actually do earn a qualifica-

tion in prison, what do we expect them to do with it when no one will hire them because they have a criminal record? Take the example of David. David was convicted for armed robbery, a very serious offence. He was sentenced to prison and was paroled after serving 12 years. During his time in prison, he earned a BA degree in psychology and went on to complete an Honours degree. He wishes to pursue his studies so that he can find work in his chosen field. He cannot do this because he has a criminal record. Sowemustaskourselvesthequestion – what was the point of David spending all those years studying psychology if, upon release, he cannot study further or practice? Every time he applies for anything, his record comes up and he is turned away. No one is suggesting that the offence he committed is not serious. However, he served 12 years and put those years to good use. He wants to lead a different life. But he cannot because society has placed innumerable barriers in his way. On the one hand we say to David, turn your life around and stay away from crime. At the same time, we Soap - Lux also say to him, forget about having dreams of a different future because you have a record that will stay with you 99 forlife.Ineffect, we are inflicting punish-

WHAT DO WE EXPECT PEOPLE TO DO IN PRISON WHILE THEY WAIT OUT THEIR SENTENCE? DO WE EXPECT THEM TO WORK AND EARN THEIR KEEP? HOW DO WE EXPECT THEM TO WORK WHEN MOST OF THEM HAVE NO SKILLS OR WORK EXPERIENCE? ment on people that goes way beyond the sentence. We are permanently blighting their lives, while expecting them to turn over a new leaf. Are we not seriously contradicting ourselves? If we want to do something about the crime rate in South Africa, we should ask ourselves what prospects and opportunities do offenders have to lead different lives? The answer is...very poor prospects and hardly any opportunities. Let us look at another example. Harker is a young man who was convicted for possession of mandrax and dagga seven years ago. He has since marriedandbecomeafather. However, he cannot find work because he has a record. In his own words “So for me because of my beliefs I try to stay positive, but still I would like some help from you guys as well by fighting this thing on my name. “We are sitting with young people with a record like me, they try to change but our system is not allowing them to. Some of them go back to doing “darkness because of this. We need help, it’s hard out there. Try to help. Take Max, who was convicted for possession of dagga: “This has affected my career and growth ever since. It is very hard for me to move forward in life because I am not even called in for an interview when applying for jobs (work in the financial industry), please assist me. I would love to enrol

in the programme so I can further my career as a financial advisor. I have already been rejected by Sanlam and other financial institutes because of this. WhenIraisedthisissuewithasenior member of the judiciary, he said that if people do not want the punishment, they should not do the crime. Fair enough, but then we must be clear that we do not expect offenders to change their lives. We must be honest and state that we expect them to go on committing crimes and victimising other people. We must stop this half-hearted business of mouthing words like “social reintegration and “restorative justice and be honest about the fact that, as a society, we do not believe people can change and we offer no way out of a life of crime for people who have gone down that road. Because this is the message we are sending anyway, although we pretend otherwise. Itisnotjustthecrimestatisticsthat people should be vocal about. It is also the half-hearted and contradictory way in which our society attempts to reintegrate offenders who wish to lead different lives. It is not just the crime stats that need changing in South Africa. We really need to rethink punishment and rehabilitation. *Regan Jules-Macquet is noncustodial sentencing project manager at National Institute for Crime prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders.

>> NOMPENDULO NGUBANE spoke to Khaya Mthethwa about what he thinks of this year’s SA Idol competition, after his rehearsals for a new gospel project with Mzansi Magic … NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

W

HILE SA citizen’s eyes are glued on TV screens and continuously voting for a person they want declared as this year’s SA Idol winner, 2012 SA Idol winner Khaya Mthethwa(27)ishavingearlymornings and late nights for his album release next year. The most loved and voted Idol also has his favourite contestant that he refused to disclose. After the interview being postponed due to his rehearsals for the new gospel project with Mzansi Magic on DSTV. THE one thing that we don’t understand is the amount of talent we have in SA. I can’t wait and I’m looking forward to the SA Idol top five, said Mthethwa.

He insisted on keeping his favourite Idols’ contestant secret, saying even disclosing the gender of that person will indirectly reveal who his fingers are crossed for in this year’s competition. “This country has great singers with the most incredible voices. From what I’m seeing in this year’s competition, iyashisa (it’s really happening). I can’t wait for the top five where the guessing will be much easier than it currently is. “What I would like to see happening is for people to continue dreaming. My parents use to ask me every morning what I dreamt about when I was sleeping. I didn’t understand that they were invoking in me to search for my dream in life. “Many people are discouraged by fear even if they are granted opportuni-

ties. Just go for something that you want, if given an opportunity grab it with both hands and excel. With the Idols competition I was also scared. It took me four years to prepare for the Idols competition but I finally did it,” he said. Mthethwa is working on a gospel project with Mzansi Magic where he will be presenting. “It’s a lot of hard work but I am coping and I am excited about the project. I have early mornings and late nights everyday. I only took a one-week holiday this year and I will have one in January since I’m busy with projects, including cooking my album which will be out next year,” he said.

JOURNEY TO RETIRING THE RIGHT WAY South Africans are living, on average, seven years longer. This means that you will have to stretch your retirement savings even further or delay your retirement. Wilfred Moyo, Investment & Economic Strategist at Metropolitan explains the steps to ensure a comfortable retirement.

4. Don’t be tempted to cash in your fund before retirement It can be very tempting to dip into your retirement fund to help pay off debt now. If you are retrenched or resign from your job, move your retirement money to a preservation fund or another retirement product. If you cash out your retirement fund and spend the money, you will have to save twice as much to make up for it.

1. Set your retirement goal Before you start your journey, you can estimate how much money you will need to save for retirement to maintain your current standard of living. A pension equal to 60% to 75% of the salary you are earning in the year before you retire will be enough. For example, if your income before you retired is R10 000, a pension of R7 000 should be enough to maintain your lifestyle.

5. Know your options when you retire As you get closer to retirement, you need to start considering the details of the annuity that you will purchase. An annuity is a policy where you will invest your retirement fund to secure a regular pension.

2. Find the best retirement savings option You can save for retirement in a retirement annuity (RA), pension or preservation fund, savings plan or bank account.A retirement annuity is designed for retirement savings and you get tax breaks as well. You can save a set amount every month into your RA to build up a retirement fund. You can also save a large single amount of money into your RA (i.e. you can save R300 every month or R1 000 every three months).

Wilfred Moyo, Investment & Economic Strategist at Metropolitan

This important decision means the difference between making your retirement money last and running out of money midway through retirement. 6. Shop around for competitive annuity rates When choosing an annuity, compare the annuity rates offered by the various insurance companies. The annuity rate is the rate of interest used to determine your monthly annuity amount. The higher the annuity rate, the more pension you’ll receive. Try to aim for the company that offers the best annuity rates. Your financial partner before and at retirement We can help with one of the biggest financial decisions that will impact the rest of your life. Contact the Pietermaritzburg branch on (033) 345 7301 or visit us at 291 Pietermaritz Street, Pietermaritzburg.

BA/MET/11089/12

3. Check your savings regularly against your retirement goal Retirement is a long-term saving goal. You need to check the retirement fund value against your retirement goal. A qualified financial adviser can assist you by using the right financial tools. If you are not savings enough to meet your target, you may have to increase your contribution to your retirement fund. You can start by revising your monthly budget to cut down on unnecessary spending. For example, eat less takeout food and prepare home-cooked meals.

At retirement, you will be faced with a number of annuity options, for example a living annuity, joint life annuity, etc. This is a critical stage in your retirement journey. Your financial adviser can explain each type of annuity along with the advantages and disadvantages of each.

UCKY Lekgwathi claims “sinister forces” are behind his exclusion from the Orlando Pirates line-up for the MTN8 Final – but says he does not blame Roger de Sa. In an explosive ‘Captain’s Corner’ column in yesterday’s Daily Sun – which is worth a read for any soccer fan – Lekgwathi says “politics ruined what could have been a great sporting weekend for the team”. at the weekend, after Bucs completely lost their composure in the penalty shoot-out. Lekgwathi was one of the surprise exclusions from Bucs’ line-up, but told KickOff.com after the game that he “respects the coach’s decision”. Sifiso Myeni was also absent, but the club insisted after the match that he had a slight knock and “could not be risked” on the day. Fans were also surprised to see Andile Jali walking onto the pitch ahead of the game, despite Lehlohonolo Masalesa’s name being on the teamsheet, fuelling speculation that the coach’s choices were being undermined. Platinum Stars veteran defender, and former Pirates player, Benson Mhlongo added more controversy to the evening, when he claimed straight after the match, on television, that Pirates asked him to sign insurance documents to end his career following a knee injury he suffered in 2009, adding: “I’m happy to beat them.” Lekgwathihasnowaddedmorefueltothe fire, revealing yesterday in the Daily Sun that hebelieves“sinisterforces”arethereasonhe was dropped – but emphasises that he does not blame De Sa. The Bucs veteran also claims that the same thing happened to him under Ruud Krol in the 2010 Telkom Knockout Final, where Pirates lost 3-0 to Kaizer Chiefs. Lekgwathi alleges that certain people at the club are “jealous” that he is still playing, adding: “they want to destroy me”. The defender says he has set up a meeting with club boss Irvin Khoza to discuss the issue, as “he’s been like a father to me all these years”.-KickOff.com

WORLD Cup hero and Kaizer Chiefs ace Siphiwe Tshabalala was the most notable absentee from Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund’s 23man squad announcement on Tuesday for 11 October’s international friendly against Morocco in Agadir City. Tshabalala is said to be injured, though the specifics of the injury were not known on Tuesday, and he is also set to miss Chiefs’ Telkom Knock-out clash against Polokwane City on Saturday. As has become routine in Igesund’s selection policy, there will be a blend of youth and experience for the Morocco clash, with five uncapped players named in the squad set for debuts. Igesund has, once again, cast his net wide and among the five newbies are two overseas-based players in 19-year-old defender Nkosi Ntlhe (Peterborough United, England) and 20-year-old midfielder Ayanda Patosi (Lokeren, Belgium). Nthle has represented SA U20 on five occasions, while Patosi learnt histradeinCapeTownbeforejetting off for the bright lights of Europe. The other three newcomers are all local players in much-hyped goalkeeper Ronwen Williams (SuperSport United), Wits midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi and 20-year-old Ajax Cape Town midfielder Keagan Dolly. Igesund has also stayed true to his word in not selecting any Orlando Pirates players — the Soweto gi-

ants are in the middle of a tough schedule thanks to CAF Champions League duty, and will play in the two-legged semi-finals of that competition either side of the Bafana match. Only Kermit Erasmus from Bucs features in Igesund’s makeup, as the striker was not registered to take part in the Champions League. “We seriously had to sit down and look at Pirates’ situation. We need to support them in this campaign hence I decided to leave their players out as we don’t want to jeopardise their preparations in any way,” Igesund told SuperSport.com on Tuesday. “Next year it could be Ajax Cape Town or Moroka Swallows or any other team and we will do exactly the same thing. We hope their success will rub off on the national team as it did in 1995 when Pirates won the continental title and Bafana Bafana lifted the Afcon trophy the following year.” Turning his attention to his opponents, Igesund said that Morocco would provide the perfect preparation for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nationsqualifiersthatgetunderwayin December. “We are playing a very formidable team and you know North African teams are strong and will give us a stern test,” he said. “This is a very serious match for both sides and there is some rivalry in that in our last match we drew 2-2 in the Afcon earlier this year — a match that was voted the best of the Afcon tournament.”

e is 24 years old and he describes himself as a very passionate and driven person who is dedicated to anything and everything that he does. His name is Michael Morton, the captain for the local PSL side, Maritzburg United. He has played for amateur clubs such as Old Parks, Randburg FC, FC Juniors and Orlando Pirates’ Yebo Yes United. The professional clubs he has played for before joining the Team of Choice are Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits. He always looks forward to playing games at home in front of the team’s supporters. The Joburg-born defender said the turn out and supportatHarryGwalastadiumisalways fantastic. “You often see the same faces in the crowd. Whether we are winning or losing, they are there. You could always have more support, but I think the turn out we get is one of the best in the league,” said Morton. “I started playing soccer when I wasfouryearsoldwhenIjoinedaclub called Old Parks and never looked back since then. Being a captain of the club is very humbling and a lot of responsibility but I’m enjoying and relishing the challenge. “I haven’t encountered too many challenges as of yet. A call for better sporting facilities

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA DANNY Jordaan is the new Safa president. Let us hope he lives up to the expectations of the huge majority that voted him into office. It is also interesting to see that South Africans are starting to look at people in terms competency instead of race. Young South Africans are yearning for opportunities to develop their talents. We hope the new executive will consider first the interest of the game before themselves. Presently, we seem to think that Bafana Bafana can become a world class team in a country where the juniors are not playing. The biggest challenge as Danny himself correctly identifies is the quality of coaching. South African footballers are a product of our coaches. We definitely needtoimprovethequalityandquantity of coaches in this country. You do not become a good coach only by winning local competitions. South African coaches should compare with the best that the world can offer. Problems of South African football will take many years to solve. The training of more coaches and the quality of training does not solve coaching challenges. We also need to change our mindsets in relation to work ethic. It does not help to have highly educated but lazy people. Presently, money and materialistic things are more important than the work to most of us. Issues of service delivery are also closely linked to the game of football. Our country has not transformed in terms of football facilities at grassroots level. Young boys and girls do not have training facilities in their communities. The Sports Minister talks about school sports and yet many schools in Black areas do not have any football fields. We wish the new executive get all the support they need from every South African. Patriotism is more about doing positive things for your country than yourself. Presently, we have failed to inculcatethespiritofloveforone’scountry. I hope they will show this through their leadership style. Interest of the game must come before personal interests. THE figure of national stars who were once produced by Eastwoodcanbeeasilyreplicated if sports facilities around the areas can be improved. These were remarks by popular Eastwood socialite, entrepreneur and a soccer club - Re-United - owner Shane Patchay said recently. “We can easily see another Shaun Donnely, Klamie Row, RowenDolphin,ArthurBartman, Shaun Potgieter and Shane Morrison coming from the area again. Remember Eastwood also produced a welterweight champion, Cedrick Conway that went all the way towintheSAtitleinprofessionalboxing, so there was a national champi-

on that came out of this area when the facilitiesweregoodandlookedafter,”said Patchay. Patchay, like many residents and especially athletes of different code of sports, says the standardandconditionsofthesporting facilities around Eastwood have “gone to the dogs”. Heisappealingtothelocalmunicipality to do something in order to keep the sports going in the area. “A couple of seasons ago, I bought a team in the SAB Safa League called Kings United and changed it to ReUnited just for the local youngsters to come together again and play as a team. “But the conditions on Eastwood grounds have gone so bad that

HE ward 34 community sports day will now take place this coming Saturday as it could not go ahead last Saturday due to bad weather conditions. Ward 34 incorporates areas such as Panorama, Eastwood, Glenwood, Thembalihle and Cinderella Park and Panorama Primary School has been earmarked for the event. According to organisers, the event will start at 7:30 am with a fun run/ walk (2,5km). “The one day community games were to be rounded off last weekend but the unkind rainy weather and dangerous conditions forced us to rereschedule it for this coming Saturday,” said event coordinator and founder of the ward 34 community sport day, Jerry Barnes. “Some teams, parents and spectators came and really wanted to go ahead with the games, but the conditions were bad. It was very cold, raining non-stop, the pitch slippery and wedecideditwasnotsafeforour community, especiallythechildrentoplay. “I’m just glad that we all settled for Saturday,”continued the veteran sports journalist. The Department Of Sports and Recreation uMgungundlovu district manager, Busi Nkomo, said the children wanted to play but parents, organisers and team managers were able to convince them. “The children just wanted to carry on with the business, but we told them that the conditions were not safe to play. Thosekidsjustcan’twaittogetinto the ground and play. They also can’t wait for Saturday and were are all looking forward to have fun,”said Nkomo. He feels if Eastwood grounds can be maintainedagain, fencedupandprovided with proper lighting, things can be back to normal and crime can also go low. “Things are so different, you go to other areas flood light at the grounds are all working properly and always on, but you come to Eastwood grounds, not all the flood light are in working conditions, fence is broken down and people just walk through everyday and there’s a big footpath in the middle of the pitch. “We also don’t see those sprin-

Msunduzi Municipality spokesman Brian Zuma said the problem was a common one around the city but needs attention. “Maybe we need to re-visit and understand how those facilities were maintained and work from there. But issues like these are common and are all over our areas, ideas need to be shared in order to come up with the best solutions.” -Jerry Barnes

People were asking to bring more netball teams and ingoma groups (traditional Zulu dance). “I’m saying any team (boys, girls, seniors, O35-old timers or juniors), from any area, sports or traditional, anything, come, participate and play with us. “Residents of Ward 34 are very accommodatingandwelcomesthevisiting teams. It’s just a day of playing and fun and everybody will win something. We are only asking people to bringthemselvessomethingtoeatbecause we don’t have a sponsor to feed people. “I repeat, people are coming to play. They will win medals and trophies, we don’t have food,” said Barnes. He said the aim of the event is to see the community playing and being made aware of social ills such as drugs, alcohol, abusive behaviour and HIV/Aids and how to prevent them or manage HIV/Aids. Old clothes, blankets and food parcels will be collected for the recent Jika-Joe informal settlement victims whose homes were destroyed by fire.
