IP pickers at the New England landfill site say a war is looming amid accusations that security guards posted at the site are

depriving them of their daily bread. As a result, they have called for an intervention from the municipality since they allege that the security guards are no longer doing what they were employed for, but instead are taking over their jobs.

The pickers noted that since the security guards started taking waste that is meant for them, they are struggling to make ends meet. Nonhlanhla Mthethwa said that they pick up and sell litter to make a living and some of them have been working at the dump for the past 20

years. “With the money that we get from selling waste, which is at least R2 000 a week if everything goes well, we support our families. These security guards have been doing this for a while, but it has reached a point where we are fed up,” said Mthethwa. The pickers allege that when waste arrives at the transfer station, before being taken up to the dump site by refuse trucks, it is inspected by security guards. “When there is copper or waste that can be soldatprofitableprices, theytakeit.Whenthese trucks come to the dump site, there is hardly anything for us to use,” said a picker who did not want to be identified. Despite having reported the matter to their supervisors, the pickers say that nothing has been done. “On Saturday, a fight ensued between a workerandasecurityguardovercopper.Weare calling for an intervention before this animosity boilsover. Wearenotevenallowedtocomenear the transfer station,” said Mthethwa. Msunduzi municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said that security is meant to guard the property and to ensure that there are no illegal activities taking place at the site. “ This matter will be taken up with the security company and a report will be requested from them on this matter”.

Parents should be more responsible CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS THREE DON’T UNDERSTAND ABUSE. THEY WOULD BE FRIENDLY TO THEIR ABUSER, NOT KNOWING THAT THEY SHOULDN’T BE. NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@gmail.com

C

HILDREN are often abused by people who are around or close to them, and in that way it is difficult to notice or to pick up signs of behavioural change, said Chlildline SA CEO, Dumisile Nala. Nalaadvisedthatparentsmustmakeittheir responsibility to look out for certain signs which might be an indication that the child is being sexually abused. She said a child who is a victim of sexual abuse is sometimes over–friendly to the person who abuses him or her as he or she is still too young to understand the abuse. “Children as young as three years old don’t understand abuse. They would be friendly to their abuser, not knowing that they shouldn’t be. They are not aware that being abused is wrong. Parents should look out for that kind of behaviour if it’s happening. They should always check their children’s panties, as there might be stains. A child might complain that

there private area is sore. As a parent, you should be attending to that because it might meanthatachildisbeingsexuallyabused,”said Nala. She said that parents should worry if a child as young as three uses language that a person at his/ her age shouldn’t be using. “You would find that those words are used by the abuser and that’s how a child has knowledge of them,” she said. She added that abused children lose concentration and sleep a lot. “Parents should not let their children play alone, especially in a hidden space. The community at large must also play a role by reporting sexual abuse incidents. As a community member and a parent, you have an obligation to report any abuse aimed at children.Sometimes parents don’t report abuse because the abuser might be a bread winner. Some women don’t report incidents of sexual abuse because of disbelief. They don’t believe that their partner could be responsible for abusing their children,” said Nala.

>> Liberty midlands mall will be expanded in a project to cost R380 million

T

HE Liberty Group recently announced significant plans to further entrench its Liberty Midlands Mall investment as the lifestyle centre of choice for tenants and shoppers in the Pietermaritzburg area. The R380 million investment will see the development of a new lifestyle centre, including retail and office components, adjacent to the existing mall. Not only will the expansion strengthen the centre’s positioning in the area, but the improved retail offering will boost the mall’s ability to differentiate itself. Upon completion, the extension will increase the entire complex floor space by an additional 19,000m2 to a total GLA of over 75,000m2. Liberty Properties has been awarded the mandate to develop the undertaking on behalf of the property owners. Commentingontheproject,Liberty Properties property development divisional director Graham Kusano said: “The exciting new lifestyle extension is attracting new brands and specialist stores not currently available in the area, as well as giving existing retailers the potential to expand”. The project will also strengthen the existing centre’s mixed use offering by introducing an office compo-

Liberty midlands mall keeps growing nent through the addition of a twostorey office block. Kusano says the new lifestyle centre will be at least 80% pre–let prior to development commencing. This is the third phase of Liberty’s vision for Liberty Midlands Mall. “From the time the complex opened itsdoorssometenyearsago, itquickly established itself as the leading retail facility in the KZN Midlands region,’ Kusano says. “Since then, the mall has experienced high demand for space by both local and national retailers. This demand has been addressed by expanding the mall in line with the growing economic needs of the district. The addition of the Stay Easy Hotel in 2010, for instance, brought a new dimension to the complex with a shift away from a strictly retail driven offering,” he continued. Amelia Beattie, chief investment officer of Stanlib Direct Property Investments, the asset manager for Liberty Group said: “This significant investment emphasises the viability of this asset in the KZN interior. We consider Pietermaritzburg a stable commercial environment with good economic growth predicted in the future. The expansion project is in line with Liberty Group’s strategy to augment their existing world class retail developments with mixed use

With this new phase, the asset manager has targeted to achieve a four-star SA Green Rating to improve cost efficiencies in line with the long term strategy of the portfolio. An additional R4.2million will also be invested in upgrading the immediate road infrastructure, to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion to the mall and surrounding area. Phase 3 will enhance growth, development and quality to the Pietermaritzburg community. Upon

completion, Liberty Midlands Mall will benefit from being a true mixed use development where visitors can shop, work, play and sleep. In addition to the redevelopment there will be the introduction of a new parking system in early 2014. The decision to commence paid parking at the mall follows the trend inthePietermaritzburgarea, andisin line with many major centres across the country. The new system allows for quick and easy access with enhanced security measures, including 24/7 CCTV

coverage and patrols. The system will include a free 20 minutes of parking to accommodate those dropping into the centre to run a brief errand and those who stay longer will benefit from favourable rates. Construction of the phase three is planned to commence in early 2014, and the development is anticipated to be completed by mid-2015. Further details regarding the new tenants expected to occupy the extension will be announced in the near future. –Supplied

The essence of an authentic leadership

S

O far as I’m concerned, all sectors of oursocietyarebeingled, andwithout leadership they are virtually null and

void. A busfullofpassengerswouldhavealeader, which is the driver, and the safety of everyone in the bus would be dependent on the driver and it couldn’t move without him. Likewise, inorderforanorganisationorany other undertaking to thrive, it would need a strong, diligent, judicious and unassuming leadership. Having employed these adjectives as essential attributes for a bona fide leadership, the question would be: do we have authentic leaders on this planet? As we exist as human nature, we live our lives to fulfill our needs and desires, and tobeabletoactualisetheseaspirationswe need to belong to, or associate ourselves with, institutions such as schools, universities, churches, political parties, governments, NGOs and many others. These institutions are structured, meaning theyhaveleaderstoguidethemtooperate properly. But the challenge that we have is that the majority of these leaders of ours are questionable, enigmatic, unsettling and problematic.

Doesn’t it take a gigantic effort, selfknowledge, transparency and honesty to qualify as a true leader? And isn’t this why we have extremely few genuine leaders across the globe? The myriad of dysfunctionalities and ineptitudes that are pervasive in our human structures can be attributed to our pseudo-leaders, for they occupy leadership positions without grasping the essence of leadership. How do you expect a leader who is not prepared to be led him or herself to lead you? These leaders are suffering from a hunger to be viewed and treated as titans on pedestals. When issues are raised against their pathetic deeds and behaviour, these leaders would become fiercely defensive and they resent being questioned. Being worshiped and extolled is their predilection. Among the led there would always be those who are more intelligent or learned than the leader himself, but instead of utilising them to advance his cause, the idiotic leader would perceive them as a threatandwouldgetoutofhiswaytostifle and stagnate them. The funny thing is that ultimately, this behaviour becomes detrimental to the

cowardly leader himself. Some of our leaders sneer at everything that the people they lead come up with. For instance I know of a guy who once tried to start a project that could have assisted his community in alleviating poverty and crime. When his ward councillor heard about the project he was displeased, receiving the impression that this gentleman was trying to oust him, and subsequently, the ward boss used his political power to foil the whole thing. Should worthwhile initiatives be valid or politically legitimate only if they are executed by leaders, or don’t the general and knowledgeable members of the community have a right to help their communities? There is nothing as elusive as leadership. To many, leadership is an act, not a calling. Therefore when they are in their offices, theyactacertainway, butwhentheyleave, they lead double lives. There are those who believe that the title makes the leader, however, we have all seen many people who have been placed in prominent positions with impressive titles failing miserably – real leadership is manifested in performance and results and not just in labels.

The world renowned leadership guru, Dr. Myles Munrose, said: “In my experience, leadership is 20% talent, skill and technical knowledge and 80% attitude”. He goes on to say that “genuine leadership is not a result of memorising formulas, learning skills, imitating methods or training in techniques, but is an attitude.” Traininginleadershipreallymeanstraining in attitude, for attitude has to do with how you respond to life. Leadership is both an aptitude and an attitude. This clearly indicates that when it comes to leadership, a pleasant attitude is indispensible. The world is in dire need of fair-minded, compassionate, empathetic and considerate leadership. Leaders who are not avaricious, supercilious and egocentric. We need leadership that doesn’t frown at being out-succeeded, but that is willing to learn from others. Recognition and acknowledgement of other leaders should be important to a leader without being unnecessarily competitive. Jealousy is a palpable manifestation of insecurity, hence jealous leaders are repulsive for they don’t value themselvesandhavenofaithintheirself-worth. We want leaders with undivided focus on their duty to spearhead, without ponder-

SIYABONGA MSHENGU ing over what benefits they would derive after the realisation of their goal. The ones without compensation in mind, being acutely aware that they may not consume the fruits of their sacrifices, but still soldier on. I have always been poignantly touched by Dr. Martin Luther King’s final speech delivered before his assassination in 1968: “… and I have seen the promised land. I may not get there with you.” The former president, Nelson Mandela, during the Reivonia Trial, fearlessly said, “…it is an ideal for which I’m prepared to die.” I whole-heartedly, honestly and completely concur with Dr. Munrose when he says: “The number one need all over the globe today is not money, social programs, or even new government. It is quality, moral, disciplined and principle- centered leadership.” * Siyabonga Mshengu is a secretary of KwaPata School Governing Body

Insurance tips for the holiday season

I

T seems that the year has flown by at break-neck speed. It’s hard to believe that South Africa is winding down for the December holidays. It’s a time to rest, relax and spend time with loved ones. “Whether you’re heading off for the sun, sand and surf of the coast, foreign shores or taking a well–deserved rest at home with family and loved ones, there are some important checks and balances to put in place to make sure your assets are properly protected,” said Clare Gelderblom, Regional Marketer of Aon based in Pietermaritzburg Clare Gelderblom, Regional Marketer of Aon based in Pietermaritzburg. Take the time to protect yourself and your family against criminal elements that always kick up their activities during the festive season. “Making sure that your home is safe and secure when you get back from the holidays will require some planning, so make use of this handy check list to make sure you have checked all the boxes,” said Clare. •Firstly, leave a spare set of keys, as well as a contact address and phone number, with a trusted family member, neighbour or friend in case of an emergency such as an extended power failure, fire, burglary, burst geyser or resetting of your alarm. If you can get someone to house sit for you, even better. •If you cannot find a willing friend or family member to house sit, consider appointing a reputable house sitting service to keep tabs on your property and to switch on lights, feed pets, clear post boxes of mail, water plantsandputoutrubbishbinsoncollection day – and to let you or your neighbour know if there’s a problem. •Check that your burglar alarm is fully operational and test the response of your security company to your alarm. Notify them or your neighbourhood watch that you are going away •Place any weapons, valuables and important documents in a safe or a bank safety deposit box and don’t leave the keys at home. •Lock the electricity

mains box outside your property. •Investinafewtimersandday-nightswitches for your lights. Don’t leave lights burning 24/7–notonlyisitaterriblewasteofenergy, but it’s also a dead giveaway that no one is at home. •Ensure that your electric gate motor is secured with a locked safety bracket. •Cancel deliveries of newspapers and arrange for a neighbour to clear your post box. •Disconnectcomputers,TVsandotherlightning-sensitive equipment including TV aerials •If you are making an expensive Christmas purchase, pre-arrange for insurance cover with your broker so that you’re covered from the moment you leave the store. •Check that trailers and cars you use on holiday are roadworthy and properly licensed. •Test your vehicle tracking device – it should be done every six months •If you have loaded up the cameras, cellphones, iPads, designer sunglasses and handbags, make sure they are properly insured under the All Risks section of your policy. •Ensure your driver’s licence is still valid and if you are travelling outside SA, check the territoriallimitsofyourcoverregardingcross border requirements – some countries insist on licence papers or proof of insurance. •Finally, CCTV camera systems have become very affordable, so invest in them and link the system to your armed response company if they offer this facility. Many of these systems can also be linked up to your laptop or smart phone so you can stay in touch no matter where you are in the country. Being caught on camera is also a deterrent for criminals. •Check that your insurance details and premiums are up to date and make sure you have your broker’s details stored on your phone. –Supplied

Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus does not want to disappoint.

RLANDO Pirates strikers Kermit Erasmus and Collins Mbesuma say the club can not afford to lose another final ahead of Saturday’s Telkom Knockout decider with Platinum Stars. Bucs have already come second in the MTN8 – to Dikwena – and the CAF Champions League this season. “The next few days will be crucial for us. We have to train harder and prepare well because we cannot afford to lose another cup final,” Erasmus said on the Pirates’ official website. “Ithinkthisisgoingtobeagame that both teams will play their best football. Stars will not want to lose to us and at the same time, we want to win. We will have to work hard and stay focused throughout the week.

The fans need this trophy and we will make sure we are prepared to win it for them”. Mbesuma added: “It is a final and we cannot afford to be complacent. It is our third attempt to get silverware this season and we cannot fail again. We expect a tough match over the weekend and that is why we are training hard”. Mbesuma is confident his teammates will create enough chances at Mbombela stadium at the weekend. “We create chances but we are not putting them away which is the problem” he said. “We are an experienced team. We all know it is only a matter of time before we start putting away all our chances. In a match like this one on Saturday, we will definitely beworkingonfinishingoffthegood work with goals”.

NOWLEDGE is power. It is important that our young footballers understand and appreciate this reality. The game of football, just like any other discipline, demands learning and application. Training and coaching involves learning. It is important that young players stay humble if they are to progress in their football careers. It is not easy to listen and learn for a person who is arrogant and important. December holidays provide young players with an opportunity to reflect on their goals and ambitions. There is a very close relationship between the classroom and a soccer field. These are both places where teaching and learning takes place. Football requires a very intelligent mind. A footballer has to learn and master many complex techniques and tactics. A football match is about decision making and execution of certain actions. Players who run away from schools will find it very difficult to excel in the modern game. Football is no longer just a recreational activity, it is a serious business.

There is a lot that you can learn from life experiences of other people in your field of interest. It is also important that young players differentiate between commitment and interest.

Holidays provide both young players and upcoming coaches a time to catch up on their readings. There are many football books in the libraries i.e. biographies of famous coaches and footballers. There is a lot that you can learn from life experiences of other people in your field of interest. It is also important that young players differentiate between commitment and interest. It is only committed people who achieve success. The festive season does not mean indulging in unhealthy eating if you have goals to be a great footballer. It is in this period that many young people start experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Young people have difficult choices to make in their lives. It is important that young players do not follow the crowds. Finally, football coaches have a task to ensure that players under their care learn the good habits. It is important that we prepare young South African footballers for lives beyond a football career. The present young footballers are the future fathers and mothers. Develop them in totality. day, Pirates will take the podium to collect their gold medals, trophy and the winners’ first prize,” said Modisane. Platinum Stars media and supporters officer,AubreyMolobi, saidtheywerealsogladthat they are meeting Pirates again in another final to prove a point. “We are happy that both teams are meeting in another final. We believe it will be the perfect chance to prove that it was not a fluke when we won the MTN8 against them,” said Molobi. The other factor making making this final very interesting is that Floyd Mbele, who is currently a senior administrator at Pirates, was the chairman of Stars last season. Also, Stars senior player and defender, Benson Mhlongo, was a Pirates player three seasons ago. Mhlongo is also still bitter with Pirates management who allegedly told him that his career was over after an injury. – Jerry Barnes

T

HERE are two things that make Orlando Pirates the favourites to win the Telkom Knock Out on Saturday night against Platinum Stars at Mbombela stadium. Firstly, Stars won this season’s MTN8 against Pirates in the final and so the Soweto giants won’t allow lightning to strike twice in their camp. Secondly, Pirates head coach Roger De Sa and his players are under pressure to make their supporters happy, at least before Christmas. Also recently, De Sa said the Mighty Bucs were a big team with a lot of history in South African football and deserved to challenge for top honours. “This team is big and one of the best in the country.Withalltheplayersandourprofile,we really only need to be chasing gold, not the runner-up position.” Pirates publicist Mickey Modisane this week said it makes things interesting and exciting that his team is meeting the North West tycoons in another final. “It’s actually a good thing and we are very happy that we are playing Platinum Stars in yet another final. You will remember what happened in the MTN8 final when we met. There’s a bitter score that need to be settled between us. This time around, the Mighty Sea Robbers will go through dark or blue. It’s high time we show small teams like Platinum Stars that we are bigger and mightier Perfume than them.On Satur-
