HE debate over whether or not medical marijuana should be legalized in South Africa is an ongoing and contentious one. In February this year, the Medical Innovation Bill to legalize cannabis in South Africa was introduced in parliament by Member of Parliament, Mario GR OrianiAmbrosini. The aim is to make provision for innovations in medical treatments by legalising the use of cannabis for medical, economic and industrial purposes. Under current legislation, medical practitioners are legally denied the right to prescribe proven to be effective and harmless medication to their patients, which includes cannabis. Professor Michael Herbst, head of health at The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), said that the organization views marijuana as an illegal substance. “Once legislation has changed in South Africatolegaliseanddecriminalisemarijuana, or once medicinal marijuana is legally available, Cansa will adapt its position and

will treat it as it would any other medicinal substance.” As far as ordinary marijuana is concerned, Herbst said that Cansa will treat it as it does tobacco and alcohol and will continue to warn members of the public of the inherent health implications of its use. “Cansa lauds Oriani-Ambrosini who was diagnosed with stage four, inoperable lung cancer, for raising the issues around cannabinoids and the alleviation of cancer treatment symptoms using cannabinoids,” said Herbst. Several studies have demonstrated the therapeutic effects of cannabinoids. Some substances in cannabis may be helpful for treating nausea caused by chemotherapy and for treating pain that is not relieved by conventional medicines. Currently, there are two forms of medicinal cannabinoids; smoked and oral tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, dronobinol and marinol). The difference between each is significant. Oral THC is considered safe, is delivered in standardised doses but has a slow onset effects. Smoked cannabis has a rapid onset and almost immediate effects. However smoking is not a good way to take any medication. “There is sufficient scientific evidence that indicates the effectiveness of medicinal marijuana in the treatment of nausea, vomiting, pain control and stimulation of appetite. There is additional research currently on the go showing the possibility of medicinal marijuana treating certain types of epileptic seizures and it would even be useful in treating certain leukaemias. Time will, however, inform us,” said Herbst. Cansa is of the opinion that there are sufficient medicines available in South Africa for the effective treatment of nausea, vomiting and other conditions related to cancer, including end-of-life care, and does not support the use of synthetic cannabinoids and THC. Umangh Harku of South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) offered a contrary view. “There is no conclusive evidence that the medicaluseofmarijuanawouldbeanymore effective than the medications currently registered with the Medicines Control Council.” He said that Sanca’s view of the issue is in line with the legislation that marijuana is illegal. “It is of the utmost importance to take into consideration the fact that marijuana is not harmless. Studies strongly support DSTV evidence that marijuana is the gateway drug to Fully Fitted other drug abuse,” said Harku. It is Sanca’s view that further 6” research is needed MIDRANGE beforethismatteris further considered. “Comprehensive research outcomes, national and international, on the effectiveness of the medicinal use of marijuana must be weighed up against the proven harmful effects that we know of,” said Harku.

HE absence of equipment is now the only thing standing between KZN Capital 104 FMgoingonairanditspotentiallisteners enjoying its long-promised service. Having previously failed to make good on their promise, the community radio station’s management last week almost guaranteed that the station will broadcast as of 15 June. When Echo visited the station last Friday, its CEO Jerry Jones showed a letter dated 15 May, 2014, from a company called New Installations, in which he was informed of a week’s delay in installation. “Wearestillwaitingfororderstoarrivefrom overseas suppliers and are hoping for the arrival of orders next week. This mainly being the AXIA mixer, hybrid and processor,” said New Installations company director Karl Britz. “With this said, NIC is not able to start the installation on Monday, 26 May 2014 as originally planned. We are now only planning to send a second phase crew for installation on Monday [2 June 2014],” “We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused but we are unfortunately not able to start installation without the outstanding equipment,” he further said. In the letter, and speaking to Echo, Britz said he is still confident that the station will go on air as originally planned for 15 June 2014.

OUTH pioneer Mthobisi Mkhize has a vision to develop young talent. Born in the rural village of Impendle 31 years ago, Mkhize established Umvithi Youth Development Consultancy in 2010, in a bidtohelpyoungpeoplerealisetheirpotential. Inspired by the enormous talent in rural areas which often goes unexposed, Mkhize quit his full time job a few years ago to focus on youth development. “Growing up in a rural area, I realised that there were a lot of talented young people, but there were not enough platforms for them to showcasetheirtalents.Iwantedtochangethat and came up with the name Umvithi, which means a tree that grows in a deserted area. “I had envisioned it as a shelter for future leaders. Currently, we have seven portfolios which we are working on - beauty and fashion, arts, sports, tourism, education and skills, business development and agriculture. “Through beauty and fashion, we instil self love and self respect among the youth, and also expose them to the fashion industry as well as available opportunities. There is art where we give them platforms to showcase their talents and creativity through visual and performing arts. There are so many talented young people in these fields, but they do not have the proper skills. We are looking at introducing add-art in rural schools where they will take drama, culture and dance as additional subjects. “We also introduce sports codes such as rugby and cricket which are not common in rural areas. For aspiring entrepreneurs, we helpthemregistertheirNPO’sandNGO’saswe want to enhance youth entrepreneurship.” To commemorate youth month, Umvithi YouthConsultancywillhostayouthcarnivalon 27 June where young people will showcase their talents, and a huge South African flag will be made. “All in all, I looked at the talent that we have in this province and ask myself what is it that I can do to assist? I want the organization to serve as a hub that will empower, develop and employ young people in all sectors,” he ended. .

To achieve this much in less than two decades can only be attributed to its staff and volunteers, who are committed to the project. “They take their work seriously, often beyond the call of duty, to ensure that people feel supported and guided to make the right decisions and take actions in their best interest,” said Aqirah Rawat, projects manager at Gift of the Givers. She added that during the many years of the counselling project, they have made a difference to the individuals they have engaged with and their immediate families. Friends and work colleagues have benefited from the positive effects as well. Rawat admitted however that the project was not without its challenges. “One of the main difficulties has been to maintain a significant number of volunteer counsellors. “The economic recession has had a major influence on the shortage of volunteers. Not many can afford the luxury of working without monetary remuneration.” Rawat said that the biggest growth point undoubtedly has been learning and understanding the diverse groups of people in this country. “Working on a human to human level has released the truth of the spirit for the Gift of the Givers Careline counselling team. “We embrace every individual with respect and dignity,” she said. #BringBackOurGirls campaign in PMB NICOLE JOHN VARIOUSinstitutionsinPietermaritzburghave joined the global revolution, Bring Back Our Girls, which begs for the release of the hundreds of girls kidnapped in Nigeria almost two months ago. On 14 April, over 200 Nigerian school girls were kidnapped by terrorist group, Boko Haram, from their dormitory at their school in Chibok which was later burnt to the ground. Since the kidnappings, leaders around the world have joined forces to plead for the group to release the children.

The United States began the #BringBackOurGirls campaign and petition which has since gone viral on all forms of social media. People from Toronto to Nepal, and now Pietermaritzburg, have played their part in creating awareness around this injustice. The kidnapped girls, most of whom were Christian, are reported to have been forcibly converted to Islam and forced to marry members of the terrorist group. While some people claim that the incident was a result of Islamic extremists, the fundamental reason could be to enforce the oppression of women in Nigeria and the group’s hatred for educating women in the country. Some chilling statistics from Nigeria is that three out of four women cannot read when they get married and a mere four percent of girls complete secondary school. Reports recently stated that the Nigerian government are aware of the girl’s location, however have not moved in to rescue them yet. The South African Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) KwaZulu Natal National Botanical Garden has joined the campaign to bring back the girls safely to their families. “Let us stand together in solidarity with the African nation, showing our support to Nigeria and the families that have lost their children and hope that those girls will be released back to their families unharmed,” said Tanya Abrahamse, CEO of SANBI. St Anne’s school initiated a project recently to pray for the safe return of the school girls. Pupils at the school tied yellow ribbons around an oak tree and on the school gates. There was also a special chapel service held where the sacristansledtheschoolinprayerandover200 candles were lit. The search for the girls continues as the world prays for their safe return.

Mlulama secondary steals the spotlight NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

Carter High School and KFC ADD HOPE combined forces to aid underprivileged children by hosting a golf day recently at Victoria Country Club. With the funds raised from this event, Carter was able to afford two pupils a 50% sports scholarship and donate funds to the KFC ADD HOPE hunger relief initiative. Calvin Smith (L), the area manager for KFC, presented (from left) Nokulunga Malinga and Ntsika Mjoli with their scholarship letters at Carter High School recently, who are seen with proud Carter High School headmaster, Ashwin Ramgoolam.

RESENTING solutions that could help them to better their school, Umlulama secondary school has made it to the provincial level in the Youth Citizens Action Programme’s (YCAP) 2014 competition. YCAP is a competition-based programme which encourages pupils across South Africa to take action on social issues they face in their schools and communities. Umlulama secondary school has previously made headlines, with incidents of pupils stabbing each other at the school premises. Group member Sindiswa Ngubane (14), said that it was the group’s responsibility to look deep at what their school’s challenges are. “The challenges we are faced with at school are gangsterism and bullying and so we needed to come up with solutions and strategies that would be presented to the judges. As a group, we decided that we needed to come up with activities that would keep pupils away from wrong doings. We started by liaising with our community and afterwards, we talked with our fellow pupils. The talks included all the information we have researched on gangsterism and bullying. We took all that information and we shared it with the community and the pupils. We spiced up the fun by having a fun day at school. By doing that we were trying to show that school could also be fun. With all of that being done and presented to YCAP, we were then crowned the winners at the district and provincial level,” said Ngubane. The district level competition was held at the Camperdown circuit on 16 April, followed by the provincial level competition which was in Berea Primary in Durban. Ngubane said they will be now sharpening themselves for the third phase of the national level that will be taking place from 27 to 29 June. “We are appealing for sponsors who can assist us with donations towards transport and hosting of events,” she said. They thanked all the stakeholders who were part and parcel in making sure that the competition was a success.

Focus on potential ability A PHYSICALLY challenged, but iron willed, footballer has more chance to succeed than a physically gifted but lazy player. The majority of coaches and parents easily fall into the trap of being overly excited about the presence of physical talent. We become too fixated on short term ability as compared to focusing on potential ability. Physical talent present in a young footballer is thrilling to watch, but it is not a reliable indicator of a future success. The soft skills like discipline, perseverance, motivation, dedication, the will and want, and self-management are gifted from birth as much as the physical skills. Coachesputalotoffocuson developing physical skills and neglect the mind-set skills. Proper human development

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA entails focus on both aspects. Mind-set talent is important in the development of physical and technical skills. It ensures that a player progresses from one age group to another, from youth footballtosenior/professional competition. Mental strength has become even more critical in highly competitive football. We see it every week - players who shudder with fear on match day. These are the players who compete with confidence and with lots of skills on the training ground. The trap for the so called ‘talented’ children is that they become too comfortable. The

23

mind tells them that they have already succeeded and do not need to work hard. We have seen many promising footballers over the years ending in the scrap heap. Coaches, teachers and parents need to understand that attributing success to talent can lead to failure. Siyanda Zwane, Lamontville Golden Arrows right back, has done very well for his club in the PSL. He is one of a very few footballers from this town to feature consistently at this level. I doubt if he was the ‘best’ in his age group in Sobantu Village.Iamsurethatatschool and community level there were boys who were the favourites of teachers and coaches. It would help young footballers from this town to find out the secrets behind his success. I have no doubt that desire and perseverance pushed him to the top. Unzima Lomthwalo!

He will be always my role modelandmentor.Iamverygrateful to him,” said Mthembu. Mthembu said his plan was to stay with a group of elite athletes and work from behind. “It’s not wise at all to lead the race in the early stages. Top runners or potential winners always work slowly from behind the leaders. I stuck to that plan. Later I stepped it up a gear and fortunately it worked for me,” said Mthembu. Mtolo said Mthembu deserved to be a winner after trying for a couple of years and staying focused on his goal to one day with the title. “Totellyouthetruth,Ihavenev-
