In June this year, Echo wrote a story about pupils who were protesting outside the school, after they had missed their June exams because of late coming. KZN Department of Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said that they will investigate the matter. He said: “As a department,we remain convinced that locking the gates is an effective deterrent for late coming”.

>> Six clinics have been prepared to pilot NHI in Umgungundlovu area

A

S Umgungundlovu has been identifiedasoneofthepilotsite for National Health Insurance (NHI), preparations have been made in the Primary Health Care clinics (PHC) that are part of the project. Taylors Halt, Caluza, Mpumuza, Mpophomeni, Northdale and Central City clinics have pharmacy assistants (PAs) that have been appointed, said the KZN Health communications officer Desmond Motha. HesaidtheappointmentofthePAs is to improve medicine supply management since they are solely responsible for dealing with issues of stock management.

“They are also accountable for ensuring that there is a consistent availability of medicines so that the nurses could focus on clinical care. “This was part of the district plan following the realisation that medicine supply management did not improve at PHC level without focal persons, hence the move to appoint PAs at PHC level. “The size of this project required a large budget to appoint PAs at each clinic. Therefore a budget had to be made available from the voted funds for such appointments. Motha said this had to be achieved by adopting a phased approach considering the fact that the personnel couldn’tbeappointedagainsttheNHI grant but only systems could be im-

proved through utilisation of such a budget. He said the district then identified and prioritised the big and busy clinicsfromallsevenmunicipalitiesofthe uMgungundlovu District as the first phase of the project. Asked if these chosen clinics would operate differently from the others, he said they will improve the manner in which medicine supply have been managed. “It will prevent over or understocking, expiring of medicines and also improve coordination as well as management of chronic medication pre-dispensed from the hospitals. These clinics will always serve every community member within their catchment areas,” he said.

WARD 1 councillor Lucky Mbanjwa has urged residents of his ward to stop buying stolen goods as this increases the incidents of crime in the area. He made the plea after members of the community caught four young men who led them to the houses and people who had sold their loots to them in the Zayeka area. It was after they were rounded and caught as it was believed that they were ones breaking into houses and stealing. Mbanjwa said although he was happy that they have caught the alleged thieves, he was concerned that there were members of the community who make the crime thrive by buying stolen goods from the thieves. He said after they had caught one young men who revealed his accomplices. “We had a meeting a week before where the issue of house break-ins was discussed. We had a week where four houses were broken into in one day. That is so appalling and it’s totally unacceptable in any community. “There is all sort of stealing of goods in houses. Not only goods are stolen but they are evenstealingfood.Thecommunityexpressed their concerns at that meeting. One old lady raised a concern about her grandson who she described as troublesome. “The same grandson was the one who was with the other three whom we caught. We wenttoeachandeveryhousewheretheyhave sold the stolen goods to. “There were DVDs, speakers, kettles and mostly house valuables” said Mbanjwa. He encouraged parents to be close to their childrenandtohave channelsofcommunication open with them. “How can we work together if the same community buys stolen goods? As a parent you should be the one reporting that to the relevant people. We have structures in the ward and they are always available. “I am there as the councillor if they need me in matters concerning the community. We have had so many house break-ins and these crimes are drastically increasing. We have to fight this together and the best way is for us to communicate,” he said.

Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) Private Hospital recently launched a new initiative aimed at reaching out to local residents who have diabetes. The Diabetes Conversation Map, held re cently at the hospital in partnership with pharmaceutical company Lilly, is the first in a series of monthly educational workshops on diabetes. Created by the International Diabetes Federa tion (IDF) and other organisations, the Conversation Map has been implemented across the globe. The condition affects a significant proportion of the local community. Education around the condition is critical in order to prevent the spread of misinformation. Pictured at the first workshop were (from left to right) Pranisha Deonarain (MCC clinical dietician), Thandekile Mtolo (an Imbali resident who has Type 2 Diabetes) and Jodi Aigner (Lilly diabetes educator). Mtolo, a retired educator and local resident, was one of the people who benefited from the initiative. She was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 1992.

N transforming the football industry, vicepresidentoftheSouth African Football Association chief Mwelo Nonkonyana has urged potential sponsors to invest in local football clubs. Addressing local football clubs at the Safa Umgungundlovu awards at the Golden Horse CasinoonSunday, hesaid:“Localfootball clubs must be trained, in a way that they are able to compete with clubs from other countries with ease and fairness. “However it is difficult because they do not have support and

sponsors, which we are calling for in order to be able to compete in world class. We are also calling municipalities to give football associations proper offices to do their administration, as many are still operating from their car boots. Grassroots development is the key to a transformed football industry”. The event was to honour local football clubs and coaches that have done well, but remain unrecognised. Some young players were also promoted to bigger teams such as the Maritzburg United, Golden Arrows and Sundowns. Congratulating the winners, Umgungundlovu district municipality

Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee said: “We acknowledge all those who are contributing towards football development. Getting our youngsters involved in soccer is an alternative to drugs, social ills and HIV. The huge challenge that we are facing, is to provide facilities to the areas that we live in”. Bandile Shandu has been promoted to Maritzburg United, Qiniso Mahlobo- Sundowns, Nkanyiso Mngwengwe -Golden Arrows and Bongi Ntuli- Golden Arrows. Debunking the popular myth about the revival of the ANCYL (PART 1) TODAY almost every loyal member of the African National Congress accepts that, the decision by the National Executive Committee to disband the African National Congress Youth League saved the movement from counter-revolutionaries – that is, a group of people who claimed to be revolutionaries but who had in reality distorted our revolution to serve the interest of an embryonic capitalist class, people who deliberately made the ANCYL what it should not be; an opposition to the ANC. On one question, however, there is still disagreement, namely, what should be the role of the ANCYL in the current phase of the struggle? This question must be answered with extracareandbeyondtheusualrhetoric of evoking the twin task of the Youth Leag ue

as an explanation of its role. This necessitates a detailed explanation of the ANCYL’s role which takes into account its accumulated history, the challenges of the youth reflecting broader social ills and intrinsic challenges of poverty, unemployment, inequality and the task confronting the National Democratic Revolution and the organisational renewal process. Accordingly, this article seeks to debunkthemyththatcentraltotherevivaloftheANCYLmustbeanattempt to speak English like the modern day political clown called Lindiwe Mazibuko and that the Youth League can only attract youth vote for the ANC if it mimic “professionals” and speak

good English as oppose to the previous woodwork clot. A glimpse on our history Asuccessfulorganisationemploys strategies that attract its core constituency and responds to it needs and aspirations, while understanding that everything is in the state of constant change, just like everything that is under the sun. Organisations must be the reflections of what they seek to build in the society and employ different tactics to realise their strategic objective. The ANCYL is the youth wing of the ANC which is the leader of all forces that seek to realise National Democratic Society through the National Democratic Revolution. Therefore, its formation was of a particular purpose in the history of our country and that of the ANC itself. The formation of the ANCYL also aimed at reinforcing the ANC on it historical mission of creating a nonracial, nonsexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa, whilst bringing the youth into a revolutionary action to take responsibility for the offensive against the Colonialism of the Special Type and whatwaslatertofollow,apart-

heid policies. At its inception, the ANCYL made the declaration that the African had lost all faith in white trusteeship over the black majority, and Africans in particular and made the assertion that the African “rejects the theory that because he is non-White and because he is a conquered race, he must be exterminated. The demands included the right to be a free citizen in the South African democracy; the right to an unhampered pursuit of his national identity and the freedom to make his legitimate contribution to human development”. As correctly contended by the 22nd National Congress Organisation Report of the ANCYL “in averring that, the African had lost all faith in all talk of Trusteeship, the ANCYL then affirmed that the Africans had now elected to determine their own future by their own efforts. In this way, the ANCYL declared that the African had invoked their birthright to revolution.” The ANCYL was formed at a criticaltimeofhistorywhenAfricanyouth in particular were increasingly searching for a more radical path to freedom. It first and for most positioned itself as a mass political youth organisation of the ANC that reinforces the programmes of the ANC in society, and reproduces the ideas of the ANC among the youth by bringing the youth into the struggle for national freedom under the broad political ambit of the ANC. Its formation was, first and foremost a response to the needs of young people at that time, by which it defended the ANC against its critics and therefore reinforcing it in

its historic mission. In its own words in the 1944 Manifesto, the ANCYL was not to be “allowed to detract the youth’s attention from the organisation of Congress. In this regard, it is thefirststeptoensurethattheAfrican youth has direct connections with the leadership of Congress”. In 1948, the ANCYL published its Basic Policy Documents, in which it expounded its aims as, inter alia, (a) rallying and uniting the African youth into one national front on the basis of African Nationalism; (b) giving force, direction and vigour to the struggle for African National Freedom, by assisting, supporting and reinforcing the National Movement – ANC; (c) studying the political, economic and social problems of Africa and the worldand(d)strivingandworkingfor the educational, moral and cultural advancement of African youth”. From its inception the ANCYL understood its mission as that of being soldiers of the ANC working in youth section. It understood that the immediate programme of the ANC was the attainment of freedom thus devoted allitsenergiesandskillsatitsdisposal in the realisation of freedom. This was better summarised by its agitation slogan “Freedom in our life time”. All the Actions of the 1944 generation which we cannot re-write given space limitation can then be better understood as having been informed by this agitation slogan which was in any way a historical mission of the ANC. It is the very same slogan that has been (mis)amended – given the second phase of the transition – to be socio-economic freedom in our lifetime.

Buzephi and Sindisiwe represent thelargestfamilyofukhambamakers in KwaZulu-Natal. There were 12 in all, taught by their mothers-in-law to create works from traditional materials like clay, wood, animal fat and reeds. Thembi Nala is the daughter of Nesta Nala, the first Zulu potter to become aware of the commercial value of her ukhamba. Nesta encouraged her daughters to become educated

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA JOSEPH S. Blatter, Fifa President says football is a school of life. It is in this spirit in my view that football people should elect their leadership. Football in this continent is crying for men

and women that put people first before personal fame and fortune. The game’s major objective should be to ensure that the majority of people are given opportunities to participate. Football has a major role to play in countries like South Africa. Football is not about huge sponsorships and mega stadiums. It is more about people deriving fulfilment from participating in a game as players, coaches, referees and spectators. The late Nadasen Thumba Subbiah, a former Padsa official is the best example of men and women required by the game. He volunteered lots of his time to make a difference in the lives of many of us. It is nice to see younger guys in Padsa carrying on in

HE popular but also neglected dance sportscanbeeasilytakentothenextlevel and remain the best, according to Mgungundlovu Dance Sports, KZN and Fedansa chairperson Thandeni Zondi. Zondi says there is a number of children that are talented and passionate about dance sport but end up giving up because parents are not playing their part. “You can go to Grange, Westgate, Imbali, Eastwood, Woodlands, Panorama and Northdale and see for yourself how many youngsters are attending practice everyday. The skill alone is amazing, the passion is just out of this world, but children can’t go forward and compete against other cities or municipalities because the majority of parents arestillpullingbackandnotsupportingthem,” said Zondi. ZondiwasspeakingonSaturdayduringthe South African Local Government Association Games (Salga) held at Howick Sportgrounds and hosted by Mngeni municipality. After the event a team to represent uMgungundlovulaterintheinter-provincialcompetition was selected. Zondi praised the only two white dancers, Jordaan Fourie (12) and Stefan Van Veeneendal (19) and their parents that are always part of the local organisation. “You know these two boys joined us when were very young and when some of them were still in the lower primary school. They did not mind about other black children around them because they were warmly welcomed and they felt at home. “Today we are all friends and brothers and sisters. Their parents are amazing and are a good example. Besides competing here, these two boys already went to represent their municipality at the district, provincial and national levels,”said Zondi. the same vein like uncle Thumba. May both Mr Thumba and Ronnie’s Naidoo’s souls rest in peace. Twenty years after the liberation struggle getting into positions has become a career. We live in a period where very few people have a sense of service. Football like political parties in this country has taken the same direction. A few individuals have become richer at the expense of football. It is everyone for himself/herself. Young people in this country have become spectators while “big” clubs recruit cheap “talent” from foreign countries. Safa districts and LFAs must not be misled by business people. Football needs leaders that have passion

forthegame.Presently, therearevery few officials that spend their weekends in dusty fields ensuring that things move smoothly. This is what younger Eric Mtshatsha did with his peers at Edendale Football Association. I also see this every weekend at Padsa. I am sure there are many like them across South Africa. Money is not everything. It is definitely not the solution for our problems. Young people do not need sponsorships to play in the competitions. Many communities in third world countries lack resources and yet football continues to thrive. If sponsorships were a solution, countries like Maliwouldneverhaveproducedfootballers to play in major European
