FAMILY of eight from Madiba Village has made an impassioned plea to anyone who who can help them as they are all crammed into one bedroom. After her husband died, Khalesakhe Mkhize was forced to

move in with her sister Khanyi, intoher two roomed, low cost house together with her six children. The children, between the ages of eight and 18, are forced to share one bedroom, together with their mother and aunt, as the only other available room is the kitchen. The children’s aunt Khanyi said that it is difficult to make ends meet

as she is unemployed and relies on a disability grant to survive. She said that when the family moved in with her, the list for low cost housing beneficiaries in the area was already closed. Although their mother receives a child support grant for some of the childre, it is not enough to sustain them throughout the month.

Khanyi Mkhize inside the one bedroom which she, her sister and six children share at night. “Their mother gets temporary jobs from time to time, and if she does not, she goes begging. Sometimes I have to use my disability grant so that I can help them with school uniforms and food,” she said. Mkhize said that four children are in primary school and the other two are in high school. “We have identified a plot behind

my house and we appeal to any good samaritan who can help us to extend the house to at least three bedrooms. We would even be happy to get an unoccupied, vandalised house which is not too far from the area, as the children go to schools in Sobantu.,” said Mkhize. OUTH African citizens are warm and they speak openly whether they know you or not. These were the words of 25year old Fabian Siebert from Germany, after making a home for himself in Ashdown for six months. Spending six months in South African as practical experience was part of his social work course that he is studying in Germany. He worked at Edendale hospital at Whizzkids Academy, where he coordinated a new soccer programme for the girls. “That was part of my experiential learning,” said Siebert in an interview with Echo the day before he left for Germany. “I will miss the traditional food

that I have grown to love. My favourite dish is dumplings, meat and fat cakes. I will miss a lot of braais and pap. There’s nothing more exciting than learning new things and having to differentiate how countries do things. “In Germany you cannot have an open conversation with a person you do not know. You have to know a person before engaging yourself in any conversation. You don’t just smile and make friendly talk unless you know that person. “Here, things are different. You meet a person at work or on your way to a shop and you talk as if you know each other. I was so impressed with that,” explained Siebert. The two weddings that Siebert attended gave him a glimpse into South African culture. “With German weddings, you sit down at church and it’s a silent

He said that a white man killed his brother and therefore he hated white people. “I was concerned by that remark and it showed that there is still no unity in some parts of this country,” said Siebert. The culture is so different and I enjoyed each and every moment of it. However, one sad thing is that there still a gap between black and white people. I was nearly assaulted by a guy on

>> Recent statistics show that there are more women involved in drug smuggling than ever before NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

O

N 9 February 2014, a woman was arrested at King Shaka International after being caught with 1,16kg’s of cocaine strapped to her body. ThedrugswerevaluedatR450000,saidColonel Jay Naicker, in a report from the police with the statistics of the drug arrests that have been made in 2013 and 2014. The statistics reveal the arrests from the May 2013 to February 2104. Out of the ten drug arrests, six of the suspects were women. Mzo Nxumalo of the SAPS Organised Crime Unit says the reason women are involved in drug smuggling is because they are less suspicious than men. He says in some cases, their involvement is due to a love affair with the drug lords. “One would spend send time with a woman, askingcertainquestionswhichwouldshowher mental state. It’s the same with the drug dealers, once they have met their targeted women they want to use for smuggling drugs, they try to find out how the target thinks. Sometimes drug smuggling comes with prostitution. A woman on the street would want to have a taste of drugs and the dealers would give them to her. They would give her as much as she wants until she fails to pay them. “That is when she starts the business of smuggling drugs to different countries. If the deal is done in that manner, that means that it’s payback time for that woman. That’s how most women are hooked on drug smuggling. It’s easy money that doesn’t need any qualification. To some, it’s extra cash that would fulfil the desires of living a luxury lifestyle. “AsIhavementioned, awomanislesssuspicious than a man and that works for the drug dealers. A smile of a woman is different from that of a man. The way a woman dresses is different from that of a man and that is how the drug dealers play their game of using these women as drug smugglers,” said Nxumalo. According to him, drug dealers know that when they send a woman to smuggle drugs, there are chances of her getting caught. “They also know that there are chances that a woman won’t get caught. My advice would be for womentostayawayfromdrugs.Peoplegetarrested for smuggling drugs and it’s always a harsh sentence,” said Nxumalo. Someofthewomen, suchasNobandaNolubabalo and Alicia Coetzer, have been arrested in foreign countries, while others have been arrested and imprisoned in South Africa, such as Sheryl Cwele, for having drug mules do the smuggling for them.

Nobanda Nolubabalo, aged 23, was apprehended in 2012 and arrested by Thai police when her dreadlocks, in which were stored elongated tubes of cocaine, began “shedding”, said Times LIVE. The Daily Mail has released footage of the Johannesburg student in police custody, her head in her hands as the authorities demonstrate how she had planned to smuggle the drugs.

Alicia Coetzer was detained about two weeks ago at Kenya’s main airport, alleg edly carrying more than a kilogram of cocaine. If convicted, Coetzer could be jailed for at least ten years. Originally from Cape Town, Coetzer flew into Nairobi from Brazil over the weekend. She had hoped to fly onto Botswana, but instead police, seemingly tipped off, detained and searched her intimately.

NGOMSOMBULUKO izinhlangano zepoli tiki KwaZuluNatal zisayinde isivumel wano sokuzibophezela okhethweni olukhulekile futhi olungenakusabisa. Phela kuyaziwa ukuthi uma sekuson dele lesikhathi sokhetho ukuthi ku namaqembu asaba ukuhanjelwa abalan deli bese echitha igazi lamalunga ezim bangi zawo ukuze nalabo abafuna ukushiya basabe ukuthi bazokwenzaka liswa.

The prejudice of money value ISRAEL MKHIZE

W

HOEVER invented money truly prejudiced the batter trade sys temof‘the exchangeofanyvalu ables of value for value’. Money, which was valued in goldvalue and equated to randvalue and visa versa, gold that is stored say, in the capital city reserves of exchange, lost its life around 1971 when currency was introduced by the Nixon Administration in the USA.

Withoutgettingdeeperintothistransi tion from money/gold value to money/ currency value, lets highlight the most critical casualties. First, money became a victim by being volatile to price control of goods and serv ice. This means that the value of money had to chase after the play out of markets under macroeconomics price control. Whatever the seller in the market would pitch their prize on their goods and servic es, money would have to adjust its value

Ukhetho lolu yilo oluveza kahle ukuthi umuntu unazo yini izibalo ahlale ememeza ngazo ukuthi unazo nokuthi usekwa aban tu abaningi. Kwamanye amaqembu ukusayinda izivumelwano ezifana nalesi sangoMsum buluko ukugcina icala nje kanti basheshe bavele obala nezinhloso zabo lapho sebe ba osikhwiliphambananobhoko. Phela abanye basuke nje befuna uku cashangasolesisivumelwanoukuzelapho

bebuzwa ukuzinikela kwabo bathi engani baze basayina sona lesi sibophezelo sokuziphatha sokhetho. Kuyaziwa phela ukuthi kukhona an gakufuni ukuthula noxolo ngoba phela la pho kuthule khona wona ahanjelwa abal andeli, baye kwamanye amaqembu. Aza ma ukuthi abe wodwa ezindaweni ukuze omunye oba elinye iqembu abonalakale njengesitha. Impela kuyaxaka ukuthi emva kwem

to catch up. The second victimisation of money, as I have already alluded to above, was its conversion to currency value under former president Nixon, facilitated by the commerce sovereignty of the federal reserve. Asitiscommonknowledge, thefederal reserve introduced the practice of printing money in proportion to how prices were regulated by the ‘free market’. Inevitably, money value was no longer equated to gold stored by fed or stock exchange, but by how the prices of gold were behaving in the market, thus money chased after prices, hence we have what is called, in a nutshell, inflation and inflation targeting. If the market raises the price of a good or service, money loses its ‘current’ value and must therefore, accordingly chase the incumbent price. The same size bread we bought for R5 now costs double that price, albeit the same process of production. The everillusive currency method of money value, introduced us to secondary illusiveness which are subresults of changing money from goldvalue to currency. These are, namely inflation, debt value or debt capital and interest. Interest, debt value and capital are the compensation of the difference between real money and currency value money. So in reality, one doesn’t know how much exact ly is in their pock

et,howmuchtheyoweandhowmuchthey own. This complex and weblike entrap ment of purchasevalue (money) in currency illusives justify the false cliché that“peopleliveabovetheirmeans”.What thatbasicallymeansis, currencycomplexi ty with its subtraps on interest and debt value /capital will surely keep everyone trapped on a spiral swing of not really knowing one’s value of purchasing power. Living costs are rising. What is raising them ifitisnotthecomplexscamofcurrencyand her ‘friends’. Hard issues that black people hardly take a second to ponder. Equally so, on the race and class ques tion, have we resolved as a nation which is the main source of our catastrophe between the two? Late former SA President Nelson Mandela resolved the race question, as some contend, but what about the class question? Who is to resolve it? As Nixon graduated the financial system from gold value to currency fluctu ations, did he push forward the possibility of inclusion for the peripherals? Has the victory over race, as it were, solved the class question for the ‘previous lyunderdograce’orhasitentrenchedthem into further race currencytraps, which due to its complexity, paralyse and frastrate the victims from attempting any analysis. The underdog race, which is black in colour and African by continent, south by demography, is lagging behind other races by four grades; 1. Behind on goldmoney

inyaka engu20 kwatholwa inkululeko yokuzikhethela, kodwa kusekhona abantu ababulala abanye ngoba nje befuna babe amalungu ezinhlangano zabo ngenkani. IKhomishana yoKhetho akeyilandelele kahle ukuhlonishwa kwalesi sibophezelo ukuzeizephulamthethozijeziswengokuthi ziphucwe amavoti, zizwe ubuhlungu ngezenzo zazo. Lokhu kuyoba yisibonelo asabenobesafisaukuhlalisaabanyeaban tu lubhojozi. Bese kuboshwa abantu!

ISRAEL MKHIZE value as we own no gold. 2. In currency value as we do not control nor understand currency variation. 3. We are behind on the race masculinity discourse, because whether we as a black race like it or not, ourraceislaggingbehindtheentirehuman race as far as these critical things are con cerned. Even when ‘our saviours’ do their saving rituals every four years, it looks like other races beget the blessings. 4. Last and very sad, we are still the underdog class and don’t understand the class war. I have not tried to solve a problem, but instead problematise whatever is deemed a solution, because truth is, our African so cietyistrappedinthecomplexitiesofmon ey and currency, race and class Israel Mkhize is an author and development dractitioner and writes in his personal capacity.

Kwaito duo want to take the industry by storm NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

LOCAL kwaito duo is hoping to take kwaito music to another level, having recently released an album entitled ‘Chillas Hardcore’. Sandile Mtolo from Hopewell and Sthembiso Nkosi from Northdale have been singing for the past four years, but only recently released their first album. The album, which talks about love, has 13 tracks and fuses kwaito, hip hop, club house and poetry. “This album does not have a specific target market. It is for anyone who loves to have some fun. It is for anyone who believes in love because we all need love. We are trying to change that image about kwaito artists, as they are often portrayed as aggressive and unloving. “We want to encourage people to love one another. We have also collaborated with some well-known artists such as ‘Intombi kaJehova’ and Botsotso Mahlaba,” said Nkosi. Nkosi said that this is the first of many albums to follow, as they are hoping to take the world by storm through their music.

Addressing problems of corruption and work ethic TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA FOOTBALL leaders need to take action in addressing issues of violence and brutality in football. A few weeks back, I saw a

referee being assaulted during the SAB league match. A number of referees have been assaulted during matches and yet no one has been prosecuted. It seems that they have accepted this as a normal practice. The sooner people are taken to criminal courts the better. Safa also need to pay more attention to therecruitment, trainingandremunera tion of the men in black. The majority of guys seem to be earning their living from officiating in football matches. This is also

a reason why sometimes a referee will offi ciate alone in a football match as the whole amount is then not shared between the three officials. Issues of unemployment, poverty, and pure greed in some cases, lead a few of our match officials to accept bribes. I think this is not only a football problem. We have become a very corrupt society. People want to make lots of money without hav ing to work hard. Clubs make it possible for the corrupt referees to thrive. Ifwefailtoaddressproblemsofcorrup

tion and poor work ethic, South African football will continue to struggle. We need to do correct things at individual level. Football needs to grow and move away from traditional ways of operations. I find it abnormal that with all the latest tech nology, football associations are poor in communication with their members. Service delivery is the buzz word in South Africa. Sometimes, it looks like we do not understand that we owe our bread to clubs and players. Elected officials and associations’, or clubs’ employees, tend to

think that they are doing people favours. Let us show some maturity and give the service that we can be happy with. The success of football in our country is dependent on the work of local football association and districts. It will be impossible for Danny Jordan to achieve Safa’s vision if people at lower levels do not act responsible. Unzima lo mthwalo!

NE of the oldest local teams during the old Maritzburg Football Association days, Young Natalians are trying very hard to keep the ‘good old days’ legacy alive. The Natalians are currently campaigning in thenewSouthAfricanIndoorFootballAssociation (Saifa), popularly known as Futsal around the globe. They are also one of the local sides holding the Pietermaritzburg flag aloft in the association under Safa. BesidestheYoungNatalians, theotheroutfit campaigning in the Saifa is Maritzburg Hotspurs. Young Natalians’ coach, Gregory Nair, said this week his side is left with two games, one away and the other one at home, to round off the current season. “We are going to play eThekwini City in Durban and Spurs at home. Our clash against

Spurs is obviously a PMB derby and is expected to be a crowd puller,” said Nair. The Young Natalians coach is confident of finishing off in the top four. Nair also feels the country’s indoor football is likely to grow and become popular, adding that the private sector or other partners are needed. “Futsal is very big around the world, but unfortunately around South Africa, we are at the moment overlooked.Safa, via the 2010 LegacyFund, werethefirstonestoleadtheway, butthefactisthatacoupleofsponsorsareneeded to sustain the league and possibly pay the players one day,” said Nair.
