EXECUTIVE Committee (Exco) memberswereecstatictofindout that one of the smelting compa nies in PMB has purchased more land for its operations. The good news is that this expansion will help increase local job opportunities. Alumicor applied for further purchase of some of the Camps Drift 6200m² piece of land right next to its smelting plant. The Alumicor smelting plant supplies the Hulamin rolling mill with pure aluminum ingots. “We have received a request from Alumicor. We think that it has a potential to increase our economy and create more jobs,” said municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi. The deputy municipal manag er for economic development, Dr Ray Ngcobo, said that further investigations need to be carried out on the market value of the land. Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela saidthatthedisposingoftheland will help grow the local economy. “What I like is that this takes us to another level in terms of allowing our land to be used effectively and generate revenue for us, but also to make a positive impact to job seekers,” said Ndela.

THE Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) in KwaZulu-Natal recently celebrated the launch of a new mobile clinic, generously sponsored by The South African Muslim Charitable Trust. The clinic is worth R460 000 and will be used to service rural and underprivileged communities throughout the province. Some of the services which will be provided to the communities, free of charge, include clinical breast examinations, lifestyle risk assessments, Pap Smears and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests which test for the possibility of prostate cancer in men. The clinic will also be used to educate communities about cancer and about lifestyle

changes that can be made to reduce their cancer risk. Throughout the month of October, the mobile clinic travelled to communities in and around the midlands to provide services. When problems were detected, patients were referred for appropriate treatment. Throughout the process of diagnosis and treatment, they are supported by Cansa staff and volunteers. “We are grateful for partners such as The South African Muslim Charitable Trust who are partnering with Cansa in the fight against cancer. With the help of such generous organisations, it makes it easier for Cansa to continue their good work in the communities by offering screening to under-resourced areas,” said Bugs Pancha, chairperson of Cansa’s board of directors.

Bcom graduate appeals for help

L

IFE is on hold for a 22yearold Ashdown orphan who, after completing his Bcom degree last year, cannot get his results as he owes the University of KwaZulu Natal R 22 000. As a result, Vuyani Dlamini is appealing for a good Samaritan to help him pay his outstanding fees as he believes that it is hindering him from securing a job. Despite having applied for jobs, he says the only response he ever gets is that he failed to include his results. He has already paid R11 000 off his debt after getting a job as an examination assistant for the Department of Education last year. To make ends meet, he works as a taxi driver occasionally to support his grandmother. Dlamini’s plight was highlighted by the Witness four years agoafterhehadaced his matric with five distinctions, but he had no money to further his studies. Out of his own pocket, UKZN’s chief vicechancellor Malegapuru Makgoba paid the registration feesforDlamini.Afterhis a rticle was published, he was able to get funding from the university, however it was not a fully fledged bursary. “I was told that it was not a fully fledged bursary. They just helped students in need as long as they could. Unfortunately, they were not able to continue paying the fees, and I was left with R33 000 debt. I was able to use the excess funds from the previous year to buy textbooks. I am grateful to Dr Makgoba for changing my life because I would not have even studied if it weren’t for him.” He said despite approaching various businessmen around the city, it has been to noavailastheytoldhim they are already supporting a lot of students. “I appeal to anyone who can help me finish offmydebtsothatIcan get my results. Sometimes I get comments from people asking whether I was really at school. I just feel like a loser, living the life I thought I had escaped.” People willing to help can contact Dlamini at 078 619 5764

Education is not a luxury, it’s a right

Msane needs recognition I WRITE this letter with great concern and confusion as to why Saul Msane, one of the African National Congress founders and 1913 Land Act Resistance activist, is less recognised. He is also less publicised than Moses Mabhida, J.L. Dube, Albert Luthuli, Solomon Plaaitjie and others. Why is our democratic government partial and favour ing certain individual’s heritage and history and not the others? Do they work according to who you are, and what they will benefit? They have a number of heritage departments and one would have hoped that they would do the right researchtoproducethecorrecthistoricalfacts.Thiscanonly be ignored if they want to achieve their own interests. MsaneTribeHeritageTrustwishestoinitiateamemorial lecture in commemoration of Mr Saul Msane, who was also once SecretaryGeneral of the ANC from 1917 to 1919, in collaboration with Ilanga Newspaper. Msane is our great grandfather, human rights activist for all South Africans, born in Edendale Mission, Pietermaritzburg in 1856. He is the one, among other early political figures, who played a very pivotal role in the liberation struggle for the South African natives during the 18th century. However, he is less recognised and betrayed by his own political party that he founded and the current democratic government. He was a prominent member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Pietermaritzburg. As a clan, we wish to have the ANC West Rand branch and the heritage history department of UKZN, and other universities, to come on board and join forces with us to initiate a Saul Msane Memorial Lecture. Stakeholders will include, among others, the National Department of Arts And Culture, Saul Msane Region African National Congress, National Heritage Council, KZN Premier’s Office and the Legislature, Umgungundlovu District Municipality and others that might be interested. ZWAKELE MSANE Researcher and coordinator of Msane Tribe Heritage Trust

LISA ELLIS INtheweekof3to7November2014,YouthforChrist/ KZN will take to the streets in Pietermaritzburg and Durban distributing flyers on our educational cam paign. It’s a campaign that calls for the support of corporates, scholars, students, principals, teachers, parents and working adults. We need the partnership from corporates who fund education through their Corporate Social Investment division. Financial donations from those who are able and willing to invest financially. Scholars to develop a mindset of sharing, making it possible for all to have the necessary resources to attend school. Scholars can donate their school uniform that is not branded, specifically white shirts, grey trousers, school shoes etc. Children we serve in rural areas walk long

distances to and from school. One pair of school shoes seldom lasts six months. Being able to give a child a pair of school shoes when they have walked the soles off the ones they have would be incredible, and scholars can make this possible by sharing. We need the principals and the teachers to cooperate and reinforce this within the schools. Donations can be dropped off at YFC offices at 1 Alan Paton Avenue, Scottsville, above Body Dynamics Gym. Banking Details: YFC/KZN. Nedbank Scottsville. Branch Code: 134125. Account No: 134 1011 461. Reference: EDUCATION Tax certificates available for financial donations For more information, contact Lisa Ellis, YFC Fundraiser, at 033 345 2970 or lisa@youthkzn.co.za.

UPILS from underprivileged backgrounds are offered a better foundationformathematicsand science literacy by the Golden Horse Casino and Olwazini, a Discovery Science and Computer Centre. This initiative is aimed at reaching out to children younger than a Grade seven level. Golden Horse Golden Horse opera tions director and complex general manager, Maureen Kivits, said they are proud to announce that they have started work on a new offering, the Curiosity Zone. “We believe the younger a child is exposed to mathematics, science and technology, the better and stronger theirfoundationinthesefieldsofstudy will be,” she said. Manager of Olwazini, Spar Duma, said that one of the main functions for any science centre is to compliment

classroom teaching by promoting mathematics, science and technology to children of all ages through interac tive exhibits and practical work. “Although the Olwazini Discovery Centre has always been bound to achieve this, prior to the Curiosity Zone initiative their service was limited as their facilities only catered to pupils withintheGradesevento12curriculum. It is our mission to reach out to people of all ages and cultures to be inspired while enjoying science and technology in order to better understand them selves and the world,” said Duma. Kivit said that the Golden Horse Casino felt that the science centres objective could be better achieved by giving children an opportunity of earlier exposure to these fields andlayanevenbetterfounda tion. For more information, people can visit www.golden horse.co.za. The event went on as normal with a day of shows from various drivers in and around Pietermaritzburg, out of town and from other countries. Spectators were excited to find out that they were able to go for rides in some of the luxury cars around the track for the first time. The next event will take place on Sunday, 30 November.

SUCCESS STORY

My name is Priya (43 years), from Howick, Pietermaritzburg. From the bottom of my heart I thank Mr Baka for saving my marriage. My husband of 12 years had been taken away from me by another woman. After moving from one herbalist to another without any success, a colleague at work told me about Mr Baka. I went there and within three days my husband came back, using water and a mirror, Baka also showed me all my enemies. I have no other way to thank this man, only to tell the whole world about him. He can also boost business, chase bad spells and tokoloshe, unfinished jobs, quick sale of property, illness, lucky oil to win at the casino and many more. ARITZBURGroadrunners, andthose from surrounding areas, will be out to win the Greater Edendale 10km Race and fun run coming up next weekend. The event, on 16 November, is hosted annually by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) as part of its corporate social investment initiative. The run starts at the FNB Wadley Stadium in Georgetown. “In line with the success of last year’s event, theeighthrunningofthismuchloved race promises to be another funfilled day for the community of Edendale and surrounds. “Withnearly2000participantslastyear, the organisers have vowed to pull out all the stops to ensure a day of fun for kids and grownups alike,” said the CMA in a press release. The association said that prize money totalling nearly R15 000 is up for grabs, with a generous first prize of R2 500 for the first man and first woman respectively. The first threewalkersoverthefinishlineforboththe men’sandwomen’sracewillalsobereward ed. “Additionally, every finisher will take home a medal and all 10km runners will receive an Edendale 10km race Tshirt,” said the release. The CMA said local school teachers have shown a heightened sense of optimism for

the event, knowing full well the power of sucheventsinunitingcommunitiesandpro moting civic pride. In this respect, the schools challenge will be a continued feature of the race in which schoolscompetewitheachotherforthetwo main ‘school prizes’. Schools are encouraged to get their pupils to participate in the fun run. The first twoschoolswiththemostfinisherswilleach walk away with a grand prize comprising of digital equipment. In terms of race logistics and security, the SAPS and traffic police will be on full alert throughout the event, as well as 60 marshals along the route. “Entry criteria stipulates that potential participants be at least 15 years old for the 10km race. Temporary licenses will be avail able at the registration desk at a cost of R10 for those runners who are not licensed members of running clubs. With regard to the 5km fun run, anyone over nine years old may enter. “The event is run under the auspices of the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), Athletics South Africa (ASA) and KwaZuluNatal Athletics (KZNA). All entrants are expected to abide by these rules. Special attention is drawn to IAAF Rules 4.2 and 142 for foreign runners, as well as the condition that no personal seconding will be permitted,” said the association.

Success is not an accident FOOTBALL people in this country must come to terms with the reality. Although hardworkiskeytoanysuccess, theindispen sable requirement for hard work is self discipline. There is a tendency in most of us to cut corners and take the easy way. We have fail ed to build proper junior and youth struc tures. We are trying to cut corners with initiatives like Diski league, under21 rule in SAB and Motsepe leagues. Itislikecomingupwithamodelthattries to marry both high school and university ed ucation. Life does not allow us to jump stages. It is step by step. Age cheating is rife, mainly because there are no proper structures for football. Success is not an accident. Failure is not an accident either. You fail if you do not do what successful people do. We are failing presently because of failure to learn from other successful football nations. South African football leaders, coaches and play ersmustunderstandtheimportanceofpay ing the price for success. Presently, people stand up for adminis trative positions in order to enjoy the benefits, such as free tickets for internation al matches, travelling business class, sleeping and dining in five star hotels. There are also many coaches that becomeactiveduringtheeventse.g.munici pality tournaments, Safa tournaments etc. Training and coaching of players is a daily activity. Players can only get better with consistently good training. Certificates do

THABO DLADLA not train the players. It is also true that people should learn from experts. Football is not progressing because we lack discipline to improve ourselves. A lot of us survive on past reputations. We need to continuously seek ideas and advice from other experts in our fields. We need to be come lifelong students of our crafts. I think it is also about time that people took responsibility for their futures. There is a culture in South Africa that someone else should take responsibility for your life. There is also a direct relationship between the amount of control you feel you have and how positive you feel. We have a choice to make i.e. either make excuses or progress. Young South African footballers need to come to terms with their situation i.e. lack of facilities, poor coaching, poorly adminis tered leagues at local, district and provincial levels. They need to take responsibility for their futures. Whining and complaining is not going to help them become excellent footballers. Discipline and training will get you closer to your dreams. We have a r esponsibility as individuals to make a difference in our lives. I find it difficult to understand when a young footballer carries

Preentries are currently being taken at Comrades Marathon House during weekdays between 8am and 4.30pm. The local race organising committee will be at the FNB Wadley Stadium taking entries on Saturday, 15 November 2014 from 11am to 2pm. Registration will also be open on the day of the race from 5am to 7am. “We are very pleased with the continued success of this community event. We are seeing more and more school children getting involved in running through such initiatives and we aim to keep up the pace with roadrunning development in our local communities. “Weareextremelygratefultothevarious schools in and around Edendale for heeding the call and organising their school children to be a part of this special event,” said CMA chairperson and Greater Edendale race organising committer (ROC) convener Macdonald Chitja. Chitja thanked their our partners in this event, Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association, who have been supporting this event since its inception. “We would also like to thank the Department of Sport and Recreation for their backing all these years. Our gratitude also goes to the Msunduzi Municipality for allowing us to utilize their facility, the FNB Wadley Stadium to host this event. Supplied.

a top of the range cellphone and yet does nothaveaballandfootballboots.Ourprior ities are “deur mekaar” as Afrikaans people say. We need to focus on important things. South African future footballers should learn that at junior level everyone is equal. The chances to get to the top depend where one spends most of his time. If cell phones and computer games are a priority, we should not complain when footballers from other part of this continent succeed interna tionally. You do not become exceptional be cause of high tech equipment. The mindset ofanindividualtowardsworkandtheability to listen and learn are some of the critical ingredients. As we said at the beginning, if local youngsters want to become top footballers, they must copy the habits of the present great footballers. The majority of youngsters are writing exams now. It is crazy that some of the foot ball leagues are starting during this period. I doubt if many people in football leadership have sons and daughters playing club foot ball. We are making the game antieduca tion. The majority of parents are not sup porting our game because of poor planning. We seem to not have the interests of the players in mind when planning these activi ties. Patriotism is the term that is commonly used by both the football leaders and ordi nary supporters. We expect players to put the interests of the country first. Is schedul ing leagues at exam times a sign of patriot ism? Is subjecting young footballers to play in dusty, rocky and unmarked fields a patri otic gesture? Let us get the basic things correctly. Unzima lo mthwalo!

>> Focus on Telkom Knockout this weekend United at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday night at 8.15pm. The question that has been asked by many soccer lovers and pundits is whether the mighty sea robbers are now mentally fit after losing their ever-green goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa recently. The other question is who will take over the captaincy and who will claim Meyiwa’s place between the goals. Pirates former captain and acting team manager Lucky Lekgwati says that

to find a captain in the team is not a problem, because there are a lot of potential leaders in the current squad. But what is important is to keep the team spirit, unity and focus on playing. He agrees that players went through a lot but said that they now need to stand up and make Meyiwa proud. “The whole team suffered and we were affected big time. But this is a chance to make Senzo happy in his absence by taking over the baton and running the race to victory. To find a new
