V

OTING for the national elections started smoothly on Monday, with a total of 64 533 people having registered for special votes in the province. Among the special voters are those who are bed ridden, have some form of disability, pregnant women and those who unintentionally find themselves in an area where

they had not registered to vote. About 5.1 million registered voters were expected to flock to 228 voting stations yesterday. Overseas, 27 000 South African voters successfully registered for voting. Gogo Nogijima Mbeje (100) from Sobantu was among a group of special voters who were visited on Monday. Speaking from her home, an excited Mbeje said that this

year’s elections reminded her of 1994, as she could not wait to cast her vote. “I want young people to see that although I am old and cannot walk anymore, I am still an active participant in this country’s democratic elections.” Although she does not remember how many times she has voted, she said that she has never missed any voting opportunity.

FTER overcoming earthworms and rare aloes, a R300 million project, which will provide housing to nearly 1 000 families, has finally been given the green light. The Msunduzi Housing Association’s plan for the housing project in the Westgate/Grange area first stalled because thousands of endangered earthworms had to be carefully relocated from the site. Then it was rare aloes that had to be moved. Just as the association was getting ready to finally get the project underway, they were stopped in their tracks. MHA CEO Ivor Caldecott explained that they were told ofaclauseintheir“conditions of establishment” which indicated they would have to wait for upgrades to the Darvill sewerage plant to be completed before they would be given a certificate of compliance enabling them to register a consolidation at the

deeds office. TheDarvillupgradeisonly expected to be completed in two years. However, a compromise was reached and the developmentisbackontrack. According to Umgeni Water, so too is the upgrade on the sewerage works. Caldecott said after negotiations between the MHA’s conveyancer and the municipality, the relevant documents for consolidation were lodged at the deeds office last week. To expedite this process, they had to request a relaxationoftheconditionsofestablishment regarding the clause on the Darvill sewerage upgrade. He said the municipality had been helpful in this regard. “I was told the upgrade would be completed during 2016 and therefore this naturally makes it unreasonable to hold a development until that time, as building costs escalate monthly,” Caldecott said. “Once the consolidation is registered and the building

plan approval process finalised, we hope to make an immediate start on the projectasthedelayshavecost us large sums of money to date,” he added. For the MHA, a private non-profit company engaged in social housing, it has been a long haul with over R8,5 million spent before the project has even got off the ground. The MHA Westgate/ Grange housing project on the Richmond Road will see the construction of 952 rental housing units. The Msunduzi Municipality had donated the 14-hectare piece of land for the project. Caldecott said the development will consist of facebrick-based units in three-storey buildings. There will be 287 units catering for households earning up to R3 500 per month and the balanceof665unitswillbefor families with an income of about R7 500 per month. Other features of the complex will include a community hall to house a crèche and a full-sized football pitch which will effectively divide the development into two villages. Funding for the development will come from the KZN Department of Human settlements, the Social Housing Regulatory Authority and a loan from the National Housing Finance Corporation. The project is expected to be completed in 2016 — the same year that the Darvill upgrade will be ready.

Residents urged to report potholes

Potholes cannot be effectively repaired when wet.

NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za POTHOLES continue to dominate Pietermaritzburg streets. The ward audits report in the recent Executive Committee (Exco) agenda shows that there are a number of identified potholes which need to be repaired by the Msunduzi municipality in various wards. Msunduzi municipality spokesperson, Madeleine Jackson-Plaatjies, urged residents to report potholes to the municipal call centre. She said that the pothole repair pilot project, which was introduced last year February, was a once off project for three months. “This has since been completed. Potholes are attended to as an on-going exercise. Potholesareaworryingfactoreverywhereand develop due to moisture penetrating into the underlying road layers and washing out fines which are gravel materials in road layers that are less than 2mm. Water or moisture is the main enemy of the road, that is why potholes develop everywhere during the summer rainy season. The other challenge is that potholes cannot be effectively repaired when wet, or if there is high moisture content in the road layers,” explained Jackson-Plaatjies. She said that there are expensive, proactive maintenanceactivitiesthatneedtobecontinuously administered to a road a few years down the line after construction. These include surface overlay, crack sealing, removal of weak spots, eradicating over-loading of roads through management of overloaded heavy vehicles and effective storm-water control. “All these actions ensure that a road lasts longer with minimum road defects. Unfortunately, the municipal roads in the current form areveryoldandtheabovementionedinterventions were not carried out in the past. The road network needs major rehabilitation work which will cost millions of rands. “Currently, the Roads and Transportation unit is updating its Road Asset Management Plan (RAMP), where all roads condition are being assessed. This plan, when complete, will quantify what needs to be done onto our roads infrastructure and costs involved,” she added. To report potholes, residents are urged to call the municipal call centre at 0800 001 868.

ELOKHU ngamazi umngane wami, uNyikinyibhoxo umfo kaNdosi, bengiqala ukumbona ethukuthele ngalendlela yokuthi abamlamulile ethi uqeda umfundisi ngepayipi engingazi ukuthi ubelithathephi, bamane basho ngaphandle kokunanaza ukuthi kukhulu okumcasulile. Sicela wena mfundi ukuthi emva kokufunda loludaba, usitshele ukuthi bekuyinto engelutho yini ecasule uNdosi, noma yinto ebingakucasula nawe. Okuphawulekile nje kumfundisi wabantu obesegxiza igazi emlonyeni sekuqaqeke nokhololo amahloni esedlala ngaye, amazwi athi: “Bengithi ngiyazincokolela nje noNdosi ngingazi ukuthi kanti sengiyona.” Amadoda ebandla abeseduze kusuka isidumo abelokhu ethi: “Kodwa kwake kwancokolwa ngomfazi womuntu kanje?” Uma esho lamadoda athi umfundisi uyilahle ngokuncokola ngokuma kahle komkaNdosi wathi: “Cha wakhetha Ndosi, imanzi eme kahle kanje!” Akabonakalanga ukuthi unyamalale nini uNdosi. Ubonakale esedonsa umfundisi ngogesi wempama kwalandela isibhakela esidabule udebe nolimi, anele angena phakathi kwabo amadoda elamula, wathi qalaqala egcekeni, wathi nya, wabuya engasadle nkobe zamuntu ephefumulela phezulu ephethe ipayipi elokhu ethi: “Umkami!, umkami!, uthi umfaz’wami unjani? Bhlati shidi

Cabanga ngaphambi kokuncokola

man!” Kungenzeka ukuthi inceku yeNkosi ibizincokolela ngempela, kodwa yagawula ingakalanga. Lokhu kuyisexwayiso kulabo abakhonze ukuncokola. Sengathi kufanele umuntu aqikelele ngaphambi kokuncokola. Kusemqoka ukuthi aqale abheke ukuthi uncokola kanjani, nobani, nini kunokuthi amane ancokole nje noma yikanjani. Kufana ncamashi nokuwela umgwaqo ungalibhekanga irobhothi bese kwenzeka isiphihli sengoziengaseidlulenemiphefumulo. Basuke bengahhemi laba abake bathi kungcono ukuthula abantu bangakwazi ukuthi ucabangani, kunokuthi uvule isitolo esingezansi kwekhala bese beqala ukukungabaza. Naye uNyikinyibhoxo lo, wake wathi: “Njengoba kuthiwa izinto zoniwa ngomlomo zilungiswe ngomlomo, kungcono kabi ukuthula ngoba akukho lutho okuzodigeka ukulungise, uzithole usunenkin-

ga uma usuhluleka ukukulungisa.” Le sihloko sokuncokola bengihlele ukubhala ngaso emasontweni ezayo, kodwa nginele ngezwa ngokunhlanhlatha kukaMnuz Visvin Reddy ongusihlalo we-ANC eChatsworth eningizimu yeTheku, ngase nginquma ukubha ngaso namahlanje. Cishe abaningi sebeyazi ukuthi lo nkabi obuye achazwe ngamanye amaNdiya akubo njengo nontandakubukwa noma ithatha, kubikwe ukuthi ubhale kwifacebook wathi isizwe sakubo siyathanda ukukhononda. Imibiko ithi uqhube wathi abanye kuzomele baphindele kwelaseNdiya bayobona ukuthi khona kuphilwa kanzima kanjani blah blah blah. Unele wabona ukuthi udlale ngegeja kuziliwe, wathi ubezikhulumela yena hhayi njengomholi we-ANC. Ayichithanga sikhathi i-ANC yammisa esikhundleni sakhe, wabe esexolisa. Asazinomaubethiuyancokolayi-

Designers told to ‘run wild’

E

MERGING and professional designers and stylists are called to let their imaginations run wild and take their place in the spotlight at the 2014 Golden Horse Sprint Race Day on 24 May. As a highly anticipated event on KwaZulu-Natal’s social calendar, attracting over 15 000 people, it is now entrenched as a platform for showcasing the designs and creations of emerging and established designers. “Answer the call and enter your design. There are spectacular prizes to be won and you will have the super opportunity to exhibit your talent at what has become one of the region’s most-prestigious horseracing and fashion events,” said Prabashni Reddy, Golden Horse’s marketing manager. The theme for this year’s fashion design competition is ‘Glamorous Affair’. Designers are urged to step back to an era where dramatic, groundsweeping dresses, regal gowns and the elegance of satin and lace were the order. “Combine the elegance and flare of yesterday’s royals and movie stars with the edge and sleekness of today’s socialites. Flaunt your models’curveswith peplum or gorgeous feminine fabrics with slim silhouettes. Let your imagine run wild with bright, bold hues, classic reds or tangerine,” said Irene Olivier from Pietermaritzburg-based Irene’s Models. There are five categories in the competition, including Best Dressed Person, Most Glamorous Couple, Best Head Gear, Best Young Designer, and Avant-Garde. There is no limit to the number of categories designers can enter. To register for entry to the competition, designers must arrive at Scottsville Racecourse before 9am on 24 May to register and be briefed. Preliminary judging will begin at 9.30am. For more information, contact Irene’s Models at 033 3460791 or 0828083952 or email irene@irenesmodels.co.za - Supplied

He said Poth invited them to come to Germany and be part of the 33 music festivals that will be happening in Hamburg. “There will be festivals that will be happening in Germany from 12 June to 13 July. The aim is for us to go there and showcase our own SouthAfricanmusictalent. It’sagreatopportunity but we need sponsorship to make that happen. TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA ROADWORK, frog jump exercises, short sprints and running laps are some of the methods still prevalent in football training locally. Wegrewupinaperiodwherethe focus was more on general fitness training. The present generation of footballers deserve better in terms of football training. The idea of specificity in terms of fitness is not understood by many football leaders. The principle of specificity is vital because of the relationship between fitness and the development of football skills. Apold-Aasen, director of physiology at the Norwegian Centre of Football Excellence says: “We do not want to develop better athletes. We want to develop better footballers.” It is important that fitness is linked to skills and teamwork training since this is paramount in nurturing footballers. The intensity, distance and direction of a run in football is determined by a ball, teammates and opponents. So, any running cannot be trained in isolation of these factors, including other factors like the importance of a result, the score etc. Fitness is long term. The serious problem facing South African sports in general is the lack of outdoor activities for young people.

JONATHAN COOK IN GLASGOW

“R

EHAB is a lonely and dark place for any athlete.” These are the words of former Epworth schoolgirl, Sanani Mangisa, as the Investec South Africa women’s hockey team goalkeeper continues on the comeback trail at the Champions Challenge tournament in Glasgow, Scotland. The 26-year-old who was born in Mthatha and schooled at St Patrick’s College in Kokstad before Epworth recognised her worth, told Echo thataftersufferinga potentially careercrippling injury, it was always going to be a big challenge to return to international hockey. “The rehab timeline after Achilles

Football activities in early childhood lay the main fitness foundations for the future footballer. It is notpossibletomakeupforthework not done early. Footballers rely on the quality of their football skills and the status of their health to make a living. Competitions at the highest level of football demands a lot physically. It is critical therefore that a player understands the importance of correct training, rest and proper nutrition. These are pillars of performance sports. The reality is that many promising footballers lack proper support and guidance. Football associations, educational institutions and governmental departments have a duty to educate the football community. Presently, SAFA structures have more clerks, security and cleaners on their payroll than technicians. Football is played in the field not offices. We will only be able to attract more fans and bigger television audiences once the quality of the game improves. It is important that we understand the difference between track and field fitness and football specific fitness. We are presently producing more horses than footballers. If we wanttoproducetopfootballers, understanding the task, challenge anddesiredendresultisimportant. Unzima Lomthwalo!

tendon surgery is usually four to six months. My two main goals during rehab were to make the team for the Champs Challenge here in Glasgow [SAwonthebronzemedalonSunday] and make myself available to be considered for the World Cup [which takes place in Holland from May 31 to June 15].” Perhaps a further incentive is that Mangisa has currently played in 92 test matches and if she stays in the team, the magical 100-mark is not far away. “Time was not on my side as I had roughly four months to work on getting match-fit again. “It’s a challenge I accepted, together with a super medical and rehab team. I was motivated by my goals and the possibility of playing in my first world cup. I’m happy to be back with the team.” SA goalkeeper coach Sheldon Rostron has plenty of time for Mangisa. “Sanani has shown a lot of courage, she is a fighter. She put in a lot of hard work even while she was injured and that has enabled the quick turnaround once her injury had healed,” said her coach. “She has stayed strong, stayed fit. Back in the team for Champions Challenge, she is doing well in training and will get game time going forward, but it’s a step-by-step process.” Epworth and Pietermaritzburg hockey fans will no doubt be holding thumbs that Mangisa is in the Investec SA team for the World Cup, which is to be announced this week.
