HE national pass rate has increased from 73,9% to 78,2% this year. The province’s pass rate has also increased from 73,1% to 77,4% Eighteen-year-old Kwanele Sishi from Masijabule High School in Swayimane was among the 30 top achievers in South Africa, having scooped 7As. Born in the deep rural Swayimane area with scarce resources, Sishi doubled her efforts in order to create a better life for her parents and three siblings. She scored As in Zulu, English, mathematics, life orientation, life science, agriculture and physical science. Her success did not come overnight though, as started studying

hard at the beginning of the year and even attended school on Sundays. “I am beyond excited as I have comeveryfartoachievethis.Istudied really hard, practised past examination papers and went to school everyday, including weekends. I would not be where I am today if it was not for thesupportofmyfamily, teachersand school mates”. Advising this year’s matriculants, she said: “If you can see it, you can definitely do it. Believe in yourself, work extra extra hard but also give yourself time to rest. If a girl from a rural area like me can make it to the national top achievers, you surely can”. Sishi hopes to study actuarial science at the University of Cape Town. Her school principal, Mthetho Ngcobo, said that her results were the

best that he has ever seen produced in his teaching career. Sandile Ngubane (18) from Edendale Technical High School obtained six distinctions with As in Zulu,English, mathematics, accounting, economics and life orientation. Raised by his grandmother, Ngubane has always been a hard worker and a straight A student. “I have always been a hard worker, but I worked even harder this year because I had a vision of becoming better”. He encouraged this year’s matric pupils to study hard from the beginning of the year. “Always aim for 100% because even if you do not get it, an A is always guaranteed”. He plans on studying BComm accounting at the University of KwaZulu

Natal. Sthembele Dlamini (18) from Smero Secondary School scooped four As in Zulu, English, life orientation and life sciences. Brought up in a family of five, with an unemployed mother, Dlamini worked hard, attending school from 7am to 9.30 pm. “From the beginning of the year, I told myself that I would work extra hard, even it meant asking the principal for permission to use the school as a study room after hours”. Although he has not yet been granted financial aid, he hopes to study industrial engineering at Wits University. Advising this year’s matriculants, he said: “There is no recipe for good results except studying. Dedicate yourself 100% percent, and you will reap the benefits”.

“I’m extremely exited about the results that I got for last year’s exams. I got a bachelor’s pass and a distinction. That allows me to go to university and study journal ism and media studies as I have planned for my future”.

“I’m not happy with the results because we did not get the 100% pass rate. In terms of the curriculum, pupils have worked so hard and they deserve what they have achieved. Both educators and pupils have worked hard and I would like to urge parents to be more involved in their children’s education”.

Pass rate unimaginable >> Minister says the 2013 pass rate exceeded expectations

J

OHANNESBURG — The 2013 matric pass rate exceeded the Basic Education Department’s target by reaching 78,2%, Minister Angie Motshekga said in Johannesburg on Monday. In 2012 it was 73,9%, she said. The department had aimed for a 75% pass rate by 2014. There were 576 490 full-time and 130 646 part-time matriculants for 2013. Schools in poor communities performed better, with 1 832 schools from the lower three quintiles achieving pass rates of 80% and higher. Matrics from these schools got a total of 78 407 bachelor passes, required for admission to universities. “The notion that the schools from the more elite communities are propping up the pass rate is therefore invalid,” Motshekga said. Every province, except the Northern Cape, improved its pass rate compared to 2012. The Free State was the top performing province, increasing its pass rate from 81,1% in 2012 to 87,4% in 2013. The province with the lowest pass rate was the Eastern Cape with 64,9%, up from 61,4% the previous year. The results for the other provinces, for 2012 and 2013, were: • Western Cape: 82,8% and 85,1%; • Limpopo: 66,9% and 71,8%. It had a 48% pass rate in 2009; • Northern Cape: 74,6% and 74,5%; • KwaZulu-Natal: 73,1% and 77,4%; • Mpumalanga: 70% and 77,6%; • Gauteng: 83,9% and 87%; • North West: 79,5% and 87,2%. — Sapa .

PROLONGED disagreement between government and the labour federation, Cosatu, on the youth wage subsidy which has now reincarnated as the Employment Tax Incentive Act, appears to be far from being resolved. The uncertainty of the stability of political dynamics in this country seems to deserve more attention than youth unemployment, at least in my personal assessment of things. One cannot but applaud the compromises the ANC–led government has had to engage in as it tries to bend over backwards to accommodate Cosatu’s rejection of the first proposal to encourage employers,

especially in the private sector, to employ young people who are facing unemployment and a doomed life of drug addiction, alcohol abuse and crime. Any parent who can look his or her child in the eyes and say “Cosatu is wrong in denying young people their right to employment,” would readily agree with me that it is a welcome development that government has passed a piece of legislation called the Employment Tax Incentive Act of 2013. This act of parliament seeks to encourage employers to retain employees on condition that they are between the ages of 18 to 24, registered South African ID -carrying citizens and have been employed on or before 1 October 2013 i.e. over three months ago. However, it is still true that older employees may still be shed if the new younger ones who were temporary labourers are retained. Hence, tensions are inevitable and a

The workshop was aimed at addressing challenges faced by people living with disabilities, and to also thank God for giving them another opportunity to live in 2014. Ward com mittee member, Busi Mbokazi, said that it is common for people living with disabilities to be excluded from

community developmental projects. “We usually host community events, butweoftenforgetthosewhoareliving with disabilities. As community lead ers, it is our duty to include them in development projects, as they also have a voice in what is happening. “Living with a disability does not mean that one is unable to do things and therefore has to rely on a disability grant”. Event organiser Toza Shabalala said that they wanted to show the resi dents that they care about them, irre spective of what they may think of themselves.

showdown would be expected between Cosatu on the one hand and the government/business community on the other hand. At the end of the day, the reality of thesituationisthatthevariousunions affiliated to Cosatu are what they are: organised labour representatives that are trying hard to represent the interests of the workers, but employers still have the upper hand in deciding who and when to hire or fire. Inahealthiercountrywherepatriotism matters, an ideal scenario would have been to have a situation where the interests of older employees are guaranteed by the employer class, whilst we embrace new, younger employees who are subsidised by government. In an ideal set–up, there should be nothing wrong with government providing incentives to business to create jobs for others. It is a great pity that in South Africa this matter is also a deeply political

and ideological one. Political because a more radical Cosatu still-to-breakaway group led by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is now distancing itself from the ruling party, and defying Cosatu’s one–union, one sector rule due to the continued suspension of the Cosatu general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi. Ideological because Cosatu is for a more socialist solution to creating decent jobs which would see sectors like the manufacturing industry enjoying government intervention in the interest of job creation and a meaningful better life for all. Thanks to the Vavi saga, which may be a precipitating factor in changing the country’s political landscape, it seems that history is just waiting to judge South African political, labour and business leaders harshly for failing to effectively support the developmental state under the current ruling party.

The ANC’s sustained effort to make a mixed economy work in this country has had great potential since 1994, but poor collaboration, lip-service and scanty practical contributionfromthesideofbusiness and labour circles have, to say the least, let the nation down. Rightly or wrongly, political leadership preferences are constantly unpredictable in this country. And now the biggest labour federation in Africa is experiencing unfamiliar cracks in leadership too. We also have a business community that remains intransigent and parasitic – if not racist and greedy – and nothing much has changed. The intransigence and selfishness of strategic players may be a new struggle that we still need to engage in more vigorously than the former anti-apartheid struggle. Simphiwe Mkhize writes in his personal capacity.

ANImbalifamilyaredesperatetofindtheir 87–year–old grandmother who has been missing since 6 December 2013. Thembi Emily Zondi, of 2357 Wula Road in Imbali stage two, walked out of the gate of their front garden at about midday on the day and has not been seen since.

Family search for gogo According to family members, she used to take short walks around the neighbour hood, so when she went out, nobody thought anything of it. The family are con cerned that she may have become disori entated and ended up getting lost. Her son, Sipho Zondi, said they had report ed her missing at the Plessislaer police sta tion. They searched the morgues and hos pitals, and have combed the surrounding suburbs, but so far there is no trace of his mother. Zondi was wearing a green jersey, brown dress, brown beret and black shoes when she left home. If anyone has seen her, or has information as to her whereabouts, please call Sipho Zondi at 083 800 6518 or Oscar Mchunu at 082 791 3563 or con tact the Plessislaer police station at 033 398 9730. — Witness Reporter. .

VOX POP T

HE National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has announced that it is withdrawing it’s support for the ANC ahead of this year’s general elections and that it is suspending it’s affiliation fee to Cosatu. Numsa has criticised the governing party for corruption for allowing President Jacob Zuma to use more than R200 million to upgrade and expand his Nkandla homestead. NOMPENDULO NGUBANE spoke to locals to find out their thoughts on the matter:

Esther Shabalala “I disagree with Numsa’s withdraw al of continued ANC support in the general election that will be taking place this year. All the whining about President Jacob Zuma’s home security upgrade is not nec essary. A lesson should have been learnt when Nelson Mandela died. It was clear to everybody that the Qunu village is not developed and it was a disgrace. We don’t want the same thing to happen with the Nkandla village”.

Nonhlanhla Hlongwane Nquku: “I don’t know why Zuma’s security upgrade is criticised so much. President Jacob Zuma is not the first president to have or build a lavish house. The previous presidents also owned beautiful houses. The matter is being exaggerated and it’s unfair to him”.

Phumlani Khumalo “I don’t understand why these talks and support withdrawals are hap pening at a time when all the focus is on the general elections. These things should have happened earlier, not now. It’s bad timing for Numsa to suspend it’s support for the ANC and I don’t support what they are doing”.

Mduduzi Mndaweni “Numsa’s support withdrawal for the ANC won’t make a difference to me as an individual. I will continue voting for the ANC. I think they need to solve their differences within themselves. What they are doing really makes no sense to me but as I have said, it doesn’t change anything”.

Football must also have new beginnings TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA ANEWyearprovideustheopportunity to have new beginnings. The political, socialandeconomicchallengesof South Africa are immense. It will take thecommitmentofeveryindividualto make changes in our beautiful country.

We have to display standards of excellenceinourworkfarhigherthan the world expects us to do. The failure to overcome a culture of freebies and easy money will condemn future generations to poverty, wars and ignorance. We hope that in 2014, those in positionsofpowerinfootballusetheir positions to advance the game. Presently, the culture of servicing people is non–existent. Once people get into offices, they become “gods” and expect people to worship them. The majority of us get into offices to loot the coffers of our organisations. It is more about business class travel, five star hotels, and free tickets to international matches.

Football associations and clubs must serve the players. Itwouldbeamajorachievementin this country if training times are scheduled to suit players. Personally, I cannot understand why PSL teams train in the mornings. This compromises the education of our young players. Generally, football matches are played in the afternoons or at night. The majority of schools and tertiary institutions have lessons from 8am to 3 pm. Football coaches have a responsibility to ensure that we have educated footballers. May 2014 also be a year where young South African footballers become more ambitious and adven-

turous. They must learn to always do their best and let life do the rest. Our players should not spend the best years of their lives in a place of the comfort. They say clinging to safe shores in your life is nothing more than making a choice to remain imprisoned by your fears. Courage is not the absence of fear. If our young boys and girls do not set themselves higher goals, the World Cup will remain just a dream. If2014canbeginwithahugemind shift from South African parents, many social and economic problems will be addressed. Young South Africans need academic, vocational, sports and life skills. United confirms Komphela as coach I

(From left) Maritzburg United chairman Farouk Kadodia welcomes Steve Komphela as the new head coach.

T’S now official. Steve Komphela is the new Maritzburg United head coach. The former Free State Stars mentor was officially announced on Monday. Komphela has signed a two-anda-half-year deal with the Team of Choice. United’s chairman, Farouk Kadodia, said Komphela’s mandate was simple and straight forward. The first priority will be to stabilise the team, before taking it away from the relegation zone and later securing a top eight spot. “Obviously, our current position is our big worry. Komphela’s main task is to change the team around,

stabilising it and gradually moving it up the log table with the aim of securing a top eight spot,”said Kadodia. Kadodia confirmed that Khompela will be also be joined by his old and trusted right hand man, Durban born Mandla Ncikazi. “He is coming in with one assistant, Ncikazi , and there will be no other changes on the technical bench,” said Kadodia. Kadodia also praised Komphela’s experience in the coaching industry and pointed out that his coming on board was like a “reunion” of the two parties. “He was part of us many years ago around2005,but nationaldutiestook him away from us. It is sad that many parents opt to spend thousands of hours either watching television or eating and drinking. Lastly, 2014 would be a great year if we develop love for ourselves. We treat others with disrespect mainly because we hate ourselves. Players kick and break the legs of others because they are hurt themselves and are under the spell of fear. >> A press conference on Monday ended speculation as the Team of Choice confirmed Steve Komphela’s twoand a half year deal after firing Clinton Larsen for a string of bad results comes with a wealth of experience having been part of the South African national teams as well as coaching Manning Rangers, Platinum Stars and lastly, he was in charge of Free State Stars. “The club believes that the acquisition of Steve will be of value, both to the leadership of its team and as a good brand ambassador for Pietermaritzburg and the midlands.” he said. United sacked the former Bloemfontein Celtic mentor, Clinton Larsen, last month following a string of poor results in the nine games when he was in charge. – Jerry Barnes

Kime and Mbanjwa boost Dusi confidence DURBAN – 2014 Dusi Canoe Marathon title hopefuls Lance Kime and Thulani Mbanjwa, got their year off to the perfect start last Sunday when they cantered to victory in the Popes Canoe Centre Alan Gardiner Memorial Challenge. This is a key Dusi seeding, raced in tough, desperately low conditions on the mid–uMngeni River from Ibis Point to Dip Tank. Kime (Best 4 Healthcare/Euro Steel) and Mbanjwa (Build it), already talked up by many as possible victors of February’s iconic K2 Dusi showdown, took to the water in the hope of getting further race practice and invaluable time in the boat together under their belts. And, having finished well over a minute ahead of Computershare Change a Life Academy’s second placed Lucas Mthalane and Mmeli Cele, they achieved just that. “It’s always nice to win a race, especially with this one having been a Dusi seeding race,” explained a satisfied Kime. “It would have been nice to have the two other crews there but even so, it’s always great to get the confidence up. It’s great to have so many pre–races before Dusi and to be getting a couple of good results, especially at this stage of our build up to Dusi, is

Dusi Canoe Marathon title hopefuls Lance Kime (Best 4 Healthcare/Euro Steel) and Thulani Mbanjwa (Build it) claimed a confidence boosting victory in the Dusi seeding race, the Popes Canoe Centre Alan Gardiner Memorial Challenge, on Sunday 5 January. great. “The closer you get to Dusi the moreyoureadintoresultsandthelast thing you want is a few bad results to play on your mind. So these few good performances we’ve had in the smaller races I definitely think have served us well and given our confidence a bit of a boost.” After seeing Sbonelo Zondi (Euro Steel) and fill-in partner Carl Folscher charge to the front of the field early on and lead the race until the Nqumeni Hill portage, Kime and Mbanjwa worked hard on the tough run and managed to put in ahead of their challengers. It was far from a done deal at that stage though.

“(Sbonelo) and Carl caught us again at Big Bend and we paddled together right up to the headwaters of the dam where we had to deal with a big hyacinth blockage,” said Kime. “We each took different lines on the portage and it was there that we managed to get ahead of the others and from then on, we held the lead across the dam and down to the finish,” he added. While many of KZN’s rivers enjoy near full conditions, a dry few days in the build up to the race produced an exceptionally low water level, adding to the day’s challenge. “There was very little water. It is a race known for being quite low but this year, the river was probably

lower than ever before and, with it being a doubles race, it really was tight and technical,” said Kime. “We had to get out and push over things a couple of times but it was a good outing for us nonetheless. Training together, which in a way this race was for us, is always far better than training on your own so we definitely still got a lot out of it! We’re getting better and better with time. We’ve gotten to know each other in the boat really well and things have steadily improved for us over time. “A couple of good results, like we’ve had recently, also really start getting you thinking that maybe we can actually do this [win Dusi]!” The majority of Dusi 2014’s top

female contenders took to the water in a K1, opening the doorway for the evergreen pairing of Debbie Germiquet and Carmen Donald to take the women’s spoils ahead of Jordan Peek and Brittany Petersen. With their Dusi partners all out of town, it was Abby Adie who led home Robyn Kime and Hilary Bruss in the women’s K1 section whilst the pairing of Sboniso Shonzi and Nokukhanya Shange claimed the mixed doubles victory. The Dusi Canoe Marathon 2014 starts in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday, 13 February and ends in Durban on Saturday, 15 February 2014. More information can be found at www.dusi.co.za – Supplied.

According to Pietermaritzburg player, and Mamelodi Sundowns defenderwhoiscurrentlyinthetraining camp, Bryce Moon, the atmosphere and spirit are very good and suggest that a positive result might be in the pipeline for Bafana Bafana’s first game on Saturday. Bafana Bafana will officially kick off their Chan campaign against Mozambique at 6pm at Cape Town stadium.
