WO men accused of crime were hauled out of their homes, beaten and set alight by an enraged mob in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The Ezinketheni community from Bob Mattison Road near Copesville ganged up in a vigilante attempt to rid their area of suspected criminals. The mob also burnt down the homes of the murder victims and those of three others they suspect of crime. Eyewitnesses described how a weaponwielding mob of over 200 people stormed the homes of the two victims. “They dragged them out into the open road. They hammered them with spades and branches, stabbing at them with knives and spears and stoning them with heavy rocks,” an eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said. “Petrol was poured over them and they were set alight in front of everyone. One tried to flee while in flames, but collapsed after 100 metres, where the mob finished him off.” Graphic evidence of the brutal attack could be seen splattered all along the roadside. Community members alleged the victims were local criminals and rapists who have plagued the area for years. “The community is fed up. AccordingtoButhelezi, themob forced another suspected criminal, “Mandla”, to pin-point the homes of his alleged cohorts. Eyewitnesses and community members did not want to be identified for fear of victimisation. Provincial police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said police are investigating two cases of murder and arson arising from the incidents. According to Zwane, three suspects were arrested. One was linked with the murders and the other two linked to house robberies in the area.

Students at UKZN call for better housing PHOTO: SISO NAILE

TUDENTS at UKZN are complaining of unhealthy living conditions at the Kensington residence between Boshoff Street and Bulwer Road. They said that they pay about R20 000 a year for the accommodation but the living conditions are unbearable. A representative for the student housing committee who didn’t want to be named, said the students living in the residence are suffering. “For the past 10 days we’ve had no water and electricity. Toilets are blocked, pipesareleakingandthekitchen is dirty,” he said. The unhappy students claim

their academic performance has dropped due to the situation. “The residence only has one cleaner for the entire property and hires security guards that are not professionally trained for the job. “We are victimised by crime,” said the representative. Another SRC member said the university has failed its students. “We were told at the beginning of the year that the residence was temporary accommodation, but we still haven’t been moved to a proper place,” she said. Some students claim to have suffered medical complications due to the unhygienic conditions. A residence supervisor, who said he

wasn’t authorised to speak to the press, shifted the blame onto the students. He accused the students of tripping the electricity and breaking the water pipes. UKZN executive director Lesiba Seshoka said the university is aware of the problems at the residence and is negotiating with the students to find a solution. “A team of cleaners, an electrician, plumber and security have been dispatched to the residence in order to resolve the immediate difficulties,” he said. He added that 21 spaces have now been made available at other residences to accommodate the most affected students.

Thousands of people on Sunday descended on Maqongqo, just outside of Pietermaritzburg, to pay their respects during the unveiling of a memorial stone on the grave of iNkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumula who was described as a peace and liberation activist. Inkosi Maphumulo is credited, among other things, for being part of a leadership that fought to bring about peace be tween the warring ANC and IFP fac tions in the 1980s and 90s. He was assassinated by gunmen in 1991, after surviving several attempts on his life and his family. 72 informal settlements in Msunduzi area NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

THERE are 72 informal settlements in the Msunduzi area. This number came as a shock to some of the Executive Committee (Exco) members who have called for the Msunduzi Municipality to instill enforcement in dealing with this socioeconomic outcome. Exco member Bill Lambert said that the figure is shocking. “What startles me is that we have 72 informal settlements in Msunduzi. This is the first time that I have ever heard that we have so many. It has never been put in any document that I have ever seen. Now we have to start focusing on what we are going to do,” he told Exco. Deputy municipal manager for economic devel opment Dr Ray Ngcobo said that the national department of Human Settlement had appointed the service provider, Kayamandi, to undertake the assessment of informal settlements throughout the country. Ngcobo said that Msunduzi was chosen as one of the pilot areas. “They had done a comprehensive report which discoveredamong, otherthings, thatthereareabout 72 informal settlements in Msunduzi. What we have done on the basis of that report is we are putting in place a strategy and a plan to eradicate or to upgrade some of the informal settlements that we have. “ThatreportisgoingtocometoExcowithspecific recommendations. Some of the informal settle ments need to be eradicated, some of them need to be upgraded and some of them may need people relocated to other housing projects that are on the pipeline. We are hoping that immediately after the report has been processed by the portfolio commit tee, that it will come to Exco,” explained Ngcobo. The rapid assessment for informal settlements in Msunduzi was completed in February this year. After viewing the contents of the Kayamandi report, the economic development business unit agreed to establish a multisector upgrading task team.

DHL empowers unemployed youth >> DHL is working in partnership with the SOS Children’s Village ECHO REPORTER

Andile Nxele from the SOS Children's Village who was recently appointed as a Picking Clerk by DHL

HILE unemployment remains rife in this country, ayoungmanfrom the SOS Children’s village has been offered a rare opportunity of finding a space in the corporate world through DHL. Having graduated with a Diploma in Business Management, Andile Nxele was given an opportunity to work as an intern at the DHL supply chain office, and was later employed as a picking clerk with the company. DHL is working in partnership with the SOS Children’s Village to expose the residents to available careers, advice on subjects to consider at school, what to study, where to study and what major skills are required in the work place. They also offer internships,

learnerships and graduate development opportunities to children from the centre. “I am really happy and privileged as every day that passes, I learn more which encourages me to reach for heights I never dreamt were possible. “In ten years from now, I can see myself in my own office, running a very successful business and when that day comes, all my gratitude will go to DHL and the support from SOS Children’s village where I grew up.” He said that growing up in an orphanage moulded him to the person that he is today, as he realised that there are people who truly care about underprivileged children. Public relations and events co-ordinator for SOS Children’s Villages South Africa Leigh Swartz said: “The company is a prime example that supporting our children can be done in many ways that go beyond just financial contributions. Time, knowledge, support and mentorship are equally important when it comes to creating well rounded young people who can go out there and face the world with confidence. This partnership not only teaches the youth about the corporate world, but that sometimes you have to start at the bottom and work hard with your goal in mind, and you could be a manager or even a CEO.”

THE Democratic Alliance offices in the provincial legislature were deliberately burnt down, the party said in a statement this week. “Preliminary forensic investigation into last week’s fire, which gutted most of our Pietermaritzburg parliamentary office, suggeststhatthiscouldbeanactofarson,” said the statement. “Atthisstage, thereareindicationsthat the fire was started by a person or persons.

We have also been advised that there was an attempt to damage our information storage units including computers and printing machines,” it continued. However, the police, one of the authori ties investigating, said they had not determined the cause of the fire. The party leaders refused to divulge the source that declared the preliminary findings. DAprovincialleaderSizweMchunusaid they would not reveal the source. “There are a number of investigations that are currently happening … We will not

recent alleged rape of a female student on campus and the protest by students over an alleged fee hike for next year. Student Representative Council (SRC) president Lungani Nhlenyama said that although he has not received reports of the latest incidents, car

He said the R500 million that had been earmarked for the building of the new parliament precinct could be better used elsewhere. The party statement added: “We will also further engage with KZN’s Communi ty Safety and Liaison MEC to assist us in bringing this matter to its satisfactory completion. We are determined to get to the bottom of this matter.” Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the cause of fire is unknown at this stage.

theft is rife, particularly in the Golf Road area. “Although Risk Managament Services (RMS) are doing their best to protect us, there is an issue of safety around campus. We have boom gates and turnstiles where students have to swipeinandoutinordertogainentry. However most of these gates are old, and don’t always work which makes it easier for intruders to gain entry. Following the alleged rape recently, students had signed a petition that all the boom gates be closed and only people with student cards could gain entry. However it was inconvenient, especially for disabled students. “Theft is on the rise, particularly when it comes to laptops and cellphones. While we feel that the university should beef up its security system, students are partly responsi-

ble for what is happening. We often advise female students to request RMS to accompany them when walking at night, but then you often find them walking alone. We have raised our safety concerns with management, and they have promised to come up with intervention strategies by the end of next week.” Executive director of corporate relations at UKZN, Lesiba Seshoka, said that they have records of only three cars that were stolen in university’ surroundings this year, but not on campus “We have intensified security patrols on campus, increased the number of security personnel and have also enforced more stringent controls at access points, We are also looking to install additional security measures.”

France stunned by luxury homes >> The municipality had earmarked the land at Ambleton and Slangspruit for phase three of a lowcost housing scheme

France residents are demanding answers from the Msunduzi Municipality about luxury homes like this one being built on land earmarked for lowcost housing at Ambleton and Slangspruit farms.

ESIDENTS of France are demanding answers from the Msunduzi Municipality about land earmarked for low-cost housing in neighbouring Thornville, on which houses have been built. The municipality had earmarked the land at Ambleton and Slangspruit for phase three of a low-cost housing scheme. However, plots were occupied by people not intended as beneficiaries, who have developed the land. The

municipality lost a court battle in trying to evict them. Mduduzi Hlongwane, member of a committee established to represent the original beneficiaries, said that the land was earmarked for them to benefit, but now people are building luxury houses on the land and the municipality is not taking action against them. “Since 2010 we have been waiting for the municipality to build RDP houses for us, as it was promised before but nothing has been done to the land by the municipality.

“Only private homes are built on the same land while we are waiting. “We see that the land is getting full with luxury homes while no RDP house has been built for us. We want to know from the municipality why we are not being attended to,” said Hlongwane. He said the municipality was also no longer briefing them about developments in relation to the scheme. A man who has built a house one of the plots said that he had bought the plot for his family from a committee representing Thornville

residents. “We paid R5 000 for the plot and we did not get a title deed. The choice was for the individual to either take thelandwithoutatitledeedortoleave the area,” he said. France resident Nombuso Ngubo was angry that they were suffering because people with money had bought the land. “This is unfair to us, because we are poor. The rich of this town continue to build their luxury houses illegally on that land earmarked for low-cost houses. “The municipality must find a way

to remove them. We are renting where we are because we are waiting for our RDP houses,” said Ngubo. Thornville committee member Nicky Gebashe confirmed that they don’t have title deeds to the land. “We don’t have title deeds and the municipality lost the battle in court when they tried to evict us as the land does not belong to them. This land belongs to the community,” said Gebashe. The municipality said it was still looking at ways to evict the Thornville residents.

NARRANDES NASH

SISO NAILE HARD work and dedication have paid off for two Pietermaritzburg nurses who have been chosen to move up through the ranks of their profession. As a result, Grey’s Hospital now has a new nursing manager and the previous incumbent has been promoted to the position of the head of nursing in KZN. Former Grey’s Hospital nursing manager Cynthia Sosibo began her new position as senior nursing services manager last week, while professional nurse Tracey “KT” McKenzie took over reins from Sosibo to be the new nursing manager at Grey’s. Sosibo said she has a passion for helping people, especially the sick, and that she was inspired to be a nurse by her mother, who was also a nurse. Before her promotion to head office, Sosibo worked at Grey’s Hospital for nearly four years. Grey’s Hospital’s chief executive officer Dr Ben Bilenge said he was very proud to have worked with such an amazing woman who was fully committed to her job. “We are very happy that one of our Grey’s Hospital employees got this post,” he said.

“McKenzie has been part of the Grey’s Hospital family for many years. She knows the ins and outs of this place very well. To us it’s just continuity,” Bilenge added. Sosibo said she will be taking the pressure as it comes. She saw the previous job as a learning curve. “I am very excited. It’s a new positioninKZN.Therewillbealotofchallenges because everything will commence from scratch,” she said. The long-serving McKenzie, who started her nursing career in 1981, said that she is now in charge of the nursing component of the hospital, for recruiting new staff and making sure that the nursing staff do their jobs properly, “because the hospital prioritises its patients”. McKenzie is also in charge of facilitating practices at the KwaZulu-Natal College of Nursing, which is in a partnership with the Grey’s nursing college. “I feel very excited about the challenge. I can make a difference in the community,” she added. She trained as a nurse for three years at Grey’s Hospital in 1981 and did her midwifery atAddingtonHospitalinDurbanbetween1984 and 1985. She has been at Grey’s ever since.

The walk for peace and non-violence that GandhistoodforstartedattheFreedomSquare at 1 pm and continued to the railway station where a cultural event was held. Nishi Bundhoo, assistant secretary of the PMB Gandhi Memorial Committee, said that they embarked on the walk to sensitise the South African people about the power of truth and non-violence, which Gandhi stood for. “We also recognise the late Dasarath Bundhoo whose idea it was to put up the statue of Mahatma Gandhi as a symbol of hope in South Africa,” she said. Organisations, churches and individuals were part of the march. Vijay Lachman said

they wanted to celebrate the one person who liberated India from British rule. “We combine his birthday and the 20 years of democracy in this country. This march symbolises the appreciation for Mahatma Gandhi as he dealt with oppression and stood as an example of peace,” he said. “Gandhi wasn’t strong physically but inside he had the great strength and soul of righteousness,” said Lachman. Zimbabwe national Peter Makomba said Gandhi should be saluted for his role in South Africa and Africa. Consul-General of India, Rajagopalan Raghunathan, said Mahatma Gandhi was a father of his nation and he was just an ordinary man with moral courage who led by example. The consul also felt a connection between India and SA. “I am very pleased with the turnout for this event. This reinforces the cultural links between India and SA,” he said.

Driving ‘Dakar dirty’ W

HEN it comes to surviving everything that the roughest terrain can put in your way there’s no motorsport event to match the Dakar Rally every January through Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. The Toyota Dakar team, builds its competing Hilux vehicles using mostly local components. As much as 80% of each vehicle is manufactured in a specialist workshop in Kyalami, Johannesburg, by a team of local petrolheads who eat, breathe and sleep their dream of winning the world’s toughest event. The team fields two Hiluxes each year with South African drivers Giniel de Villiers and Leeroy Poulter at the wheel and guided by, respectively, by Dirk von Zitzewitz and Rob Howie. De Villiers has reached the Dakar podium three times — he won in 2009, second in 2013, third in 2011 - and has been the team’s lead driver since 2012, putting the South African flag firmly in the global spotlight. The customised Hiluxes have been designed in South Africa by South African engineers, in compliance with the strict rules set out by the Dakar Rally organisers. Toyota Motorsport SA team principal Glyn Hall said: “Even though we have generous sponsors, the South Africanteamiscompetingwithitsbudgetinrands, against international teams that have millions of U.S. dollars or

euros behind them. Hall emphasises that conditions on the Dakar are extreme, each driver/navigator team being confined in a small space that goes up to 50°C in the South American desert heat, with each of them consuming up to seven litres of fluids a day – and still running the risk of dehydration. The logistics supporting the team are tremendous, says Toyota, with the team travelling with nearly nine tonnes of spare parts, tools and equipment to support the two race Hiluxes, which are packed into 78 containers for transport from Kyalami to the start of the event – and then to each stopover during the two-week race. Furthermore, theteamtakesitsownwatertotheevent, makes its own ice, and sterilises all the racers’ equipment every night. “Navigators only get the next day’s route the night before each stage and teams could still have to drive 400km to get to the start. There’s one rest day for the drivers but the mechanics and crew are working 24/7 for the duration of the event. The Dakar truly is a remarkable test of man and machine.” The next Dakar Rally will run from January 4-17. 2015. Visit the Dakar website for more information. - Supplied.

70 000 copies The C4 Picasso. THE C4 Picasso was launched in South Africa in June and is available in two derivatives Seduction and Intensive. The car is powered by a 1.6 e-HDi 115 turbodiesel good for 85kW/270Nm and it’s mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. It reaches 100km/h in 11.8sec and has a claimed top speed of 190km/h. The biggest highlight about this car is probably its self-parking function. You select the auto-park function and drive slowly-lessthan20km/h–asthecarscansand measures a suitable parking space. Once it does, select the direction to park from i.e. by indicating left or right or into a parallel bay, select reverse and the car will steer itself into the selected bay automatically. You have to drive slow and if you reach the end of the car park, the camera stops scanning for a suitable bay and you have to reverse or drive around again and start all over however, the car might stall and then you have to start the whole process all over. Citroën claims a combined fuel consumption of four litres/100km. It’s safe to say this car daintily sips fuel rather than guzzles it. It averages about 6.3-litres/100km on the open road or 16.8km/litre on urban and rural roads.

The space in this car rates top-notch. The rear row is spacious and comfortable with trays that can flip down for the kiddies or for passengers to keep items such as cellphones or even use as desk space to work on. Both front seats have massage functions. The C4 Picasso’s facia is clutter-free and the two monitors displays all the controls re: air-conditioning, car and audio settings. There’sevenacalculatorandfullcalendarand you can upload personal photos and set it as desktop wallpaper. For driver and front passenger, the driver seat can’t go much lower and the steering wheel should be built so that it can reach further back into the dash. The Seduction version will set you back R325 900. It comes with a three-year or 100 000km warranty, five-year or 100 000km service plan, three years of 24-hour roadside assistance while the warranty can be extended to five-years or 100 000km. There’s also an optional Citroën Freedrive plan - a five-year or 100 00km warranty and a five-year or 100 000km maintenance plan. AFANA Bafana head coach Ephraim “Shakes”Mashaba will definitely have another tough as teak assignment on Saturday afternoon. His charges are playing Congo-Brazzaville away at Pointe Noire for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at 4.30pm. The former Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows defender is also aware that their battle will be a titanic one, and has prepared his players in all aspects of the game. For starters, Mashaba decided to take his team for a training camp to North West and used the Royal Bafokeng Sports Complex, Platinum Stars training ground, as his base. According to him, there were a couple of reasons for taking the South African senior men’s football team there. “Just to be away from the busy and noisy Johannesburg is good for everybody in the team. North West is quiet and the facilities there are world class. “Also, you must remember that in Congo, our game will be played on an artificial pitch which the Royal Bafokeng has. And I must say, it’s the best around the country. “So we thought it would be wise to make our players train on it and try playing at least one friendly game on this type of turf before going there. The fact is that we can’t take any chances. Our assignment away will be a tough one in many ways. “So to prepare our players mentally, physically and tell them what to expect will help us a great deal,” said Mashaba. Mashaba agrees that the team from Congo-Brazzaville won’t be easy customers to his newly formed and youthful side. “Offcourseweareawarethatouryoungsters will be against an experienced team. It is also an away game and the conditions therewon’tbekindtous, butwegoingthere with our heads held high. “We are saying to all South African soccer followers - let’s give these young players a chance to earn experience, invest for the future and tell them to go there with pride.” It remains to be seen if Mashaba’s “Ben 10s” team will survive to outsmart and out-muscle Congo twice in the space of four days. Bafana Bafana will not only take on their opponents on Saturday, October 11, but immediately after that game the SA side will fly to Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba
