Three people, including a 17year-old male from Georgina, have been charged with human trafficking after York Regional Police responded to a 911 call from a victim in Georgina. Police received a 911 call March 12 from a female being held against her will at an unknown location for the purpose of prostitution. Officers were able to track down the location of the call and locate the victim. Three male suspects were arrested inside the residence and have been charged with several offences related to human trafficking, according to police. Contrary to common misperceptions that sex slaves are brought here from impoverished countries, 63 per cent of Ontario’s victims of human trafficking are Canadian citizens, says the organizer of a York Region awareness event on human trafficking. l See TRIO, page 35

The other side of the coin
LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com In about 18 months, shoppers will be able to wander among 25 best-in-class vendors at a new 40,000-squarefoot food market at Newmarket’s Upper Canada Mall. They can select the perfect steak from the butcher or sustainable salmon from the fish monger before picking up fresh vegetables from the produce stands, Camembert from the cheese shop, dessert from the bakery and a freshly squeezed mango smoothie from the juice bar. Part of the mall’s $60million redevelopment plans, the market will also offer a gift shop and restaurants facing on to Yonge Street. "I think for us it’s really a food market concept that’s quality driven. This is really to enhance people’s experience while visiting the shopping centre. It’s more of an experience that’s tied into food. We see the increasing popularity of food and beverage so it’s something that’s important to our customers," said BriAnn Stuart, general manager of mall owner Oxford Properties Group, adding this is the company’s first such food market. "It’s about experience and that’s what’s important to people and I think that’s what they’re asking for. To be honest, right now there are other grocery stores so that market’s filled so what is it that can offer an experience? Quality. A place of convenience and comfort. It allows customers a one-stop shop while complementing the other amenities the mall has to offer. Our location is great. We’re really the centre and the hub of York Re-

While an upscale food market in a shopping mall is rare, York Region is no stranger to grocery stores looking to make food shopping a posh experience. The grocery list includes Coppa’s Fresh Market in King City, Michael-Angelo’s in Aurora, Concord Food Centre in Thornhill, Vince’s Market in Newmarket and Sharon, Organic Garage in Thornhill, Nature’s Emporium in Newmarket, Yummy Market in Maple, T and T Supermarket in Markham, Unionville, Thornhill and Richmond Hill, Cataldi Fresh Market in Woodbridge and Longo’s in Aurora, Thornhill, Markham, Maple, Richmond Hill and Woodbridge. Williams Group, isn’t surprised by the growing number of high-end grocery stores settling in prosperous York Region. Food is trendy, he said, adding Canadian foodies have benefited from the tremendous influx of immigrants bringing their cuisine here. "Food has gone from a commodity to a hot product. A decade ago, fashion was paramount. Today, food is the new fashion. It is the status symbol. It is how you express yourself," he said. "Food is fashionable. It is driven by many things. One thing is there’s a lot of people making more money. There’s a lot of people who aren’t, too." Joan Stonehocker, executive director with the York Region Food Network, which advocates on food security issues, welcomes
high-end grocery stores and locally-sourced food but points out there is another side of the coin that shouldn’t be ignored. "I think that anything that supports our food infrastructure is a good thing," she said. "But obviously there is a growing food insecurity, poverty problem in York Region. We’re hearing from all sorts of agencies that more and more people are coming for assistance because of the high cost of housing and increasing inequality. To me, you’re not going to solve those or hinder them so much by the actual food. We really need to think about policies like basic income and all of these things that will make a difference because food insecurity is a poverty problem and you’re not going to solve it with food."
Walking into the Richmond Hill Community Food Bank, the first thing clients see just beyond the reception area is a table with fresh bread, bagels, wraps and even a very small selection of packaged baked goods. Just beyond the bread table are two bins, one with some large carrots and the other with a few onions. In the summer, the Hillcrest Farmers’ Market supplies the food bank with fresh fruit. There are also two fridges with cartons of milk, provided by the Ontario Association of Food Banks, and eggs. But let’s face it, most of the staples at a food bank, where clients are only allowed to visit once a month, are cans and boxes. Shelves are stocked with soup, pasta, cereal, beans, canned meat, peanut butter, pancake mix and syrup and juice boxes. There are fruit cups and puddings but a sign says those are only to be taken for children. Along another wall are shelves filled with baby formula and diapers. A couple of bins contain some non-food supplies such as personal hygiene products and pet food. In the back room, this food bank is fortunate to have three freezers for frozen foods. In 2016, 10,449 residents relied on food from food banks in Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Aurora, Newmarket, Richmond Hill and Markham, up from 10,263 in 2015, according to Alex Bilotta, executive director of LifeCorps Food Share, which supplies food to a number of agencies that provide food to people struggling to make ends meet. Food banks in Whitchurch-Stouffville, King Township and Vaughan don’t belong to the LifeCorps network. There were 6,829 adults who received food from LifeCorps food banks in York in 2016, up from 6,607 the year before. The number of children served by the six food banks was 3,620 in 2016, down slightly from 3,656 in 2015. The number of households that turned to the food banks was 4,024 in 2016, up from 3,892 in 2015. Overall, the number of visits to the LifeCorps food banks was 49,127 last year compared to 46,297 the year before, Bilotta said.

FINALLY - Straight talk About Sciatica Accidents and trauma can also be the culprits. Pregnancy can cause sciatica. Sciatica can affect anyone - including super-fit celebrities like Tiger Woods, Sylvester Stallone, and British Olympic medallist Ian Wynne. MYTH: Stop exercising and get several weeks of bed rest to overcome sciatica. FACT: Staying active can help to relieve sciatic pain and prevent the pain getting worse. Staying inactive in bed could be the worst advice - based on a recent study in the Netherlands. MYTH: Sciatica requires surgery. FACT: NO! There’s been a huge breakthrough in the treatment of sciatica and lower back pain. The procedure is called Advanced Bio-Structural Correction Spinal Care Chiropractic. The excellent results from this chiropractic have been published in major medical journals. MYTH: “There’s nothing anyone can really do. I’m just stuck with this for the rest of my life.” FACT: With the correct treatment from a healthcare professional who specialises in sciatica, you can find relief from the core cause and the symptoms. MYTH: Getting Sciatica properly diagnosed is expensive.
FACT: Not true. Zunaid Kagdi DC of Elite Care Chiropractic in Markham is currently offering an initial consultation for Just $27.

Are you suffering from back pain or sciatica? Then it’s likely your biggest problem is pain. But there’s another major problem: bad information. To end sciatica misery you must have the right information. Pay close attention because I’m going to destroy sciatica myths and give you the facts. MYTH: Sciatica will just “go away” with some rest. FACT: If you are dealing with back pain, buttock pain or leg pain, then you must seek help from a sciatica specialist immediately. Left untreated, sciatica can lead to permanent nerve damage - and lifelong pain. MYTH: Pain is the only problem associated with sciatica. FACT: In severe cases, sciatica can lead to the inability to control your bowels or bladder leading to embarrassing situations. MYTH: You must take pain medications to deal with sciatica. FACT: Drugs like muscle relaxants, pain killers, narcotics, antidepressants, and antiseizure medications have serious potential sideeffects and do not cure the root cause of sciatica. MYTH: “I must have done something wrong to get sciatica.” FACT: Physical work or simply sitting at a desk for long periods can lead to sciatica.

ABOUT US
Transit requires big picture thinking At a certain point, a spoiled child needs to have its toys taken away. Perhaps that’s where we find ourselves with Toronto’s recent decisions regarding the TTC. Although the first T stands for Toronto, the TTC has grown from a local transportation service provider to an interregional one carrying riders on more than halfa-billion trips, from one end of the GTA to the other, making it the third-largest entity of its kind in North America after the New York City Transit Authority and Mexico City Metro. However, despite existing evidence supporting this fact - several TTC bus routes already operate outside of the city’s borders and a subway extension to Vaughan is expected to commence operation this year - and a scope only projected to expand, the priorities of Toronto’s decision makers remain bafflingly parochial. Take, for instance, the latest push for a Scarborough subway. Over the past seven years, Toronto’s plan has gone from a $1.5-billion, seven-stop light rail transit line (LRT), to replace the aging Scarborough RT, that would have been fully funded by the provincial government to a three-stop subway and now, most recently, to a sixkilometre extension to the Scarborough Town Centre that will cost an estimated $3.35 billion - with $1.48 million committed by the province, $660 million being contributed by the federal government and the remaining $910 million coming from the city - but could balloon to a final pricetag in excess of $5 billion. The Toronto Star’s Jennifer Pagliaro reported last week that the subway extension is expected to serve 7,400 riders per hour in the busiest direction during rush hour, considerably less than the 15,000 people per hour minimum threshold needed to justify a subway, and will save five minutes for users compared to travel times on the SRT. In any event, the project demonstrates Toronto council shouldn’t be behind the wheel any longer. The potential expenditure is too great when so many other transit projects in York Region and across the GTHA remain in need of funding. As such, the province and the federal government should balk at contributing money to this folly. What’s more, it may even be time for transit planning authority Metrolinx to take over the TTC to ensure funding is directed to projects that will deliver the maximum benefit for commuters in the GTHA. It’s an old idea whose time may have come. Something must change. There’s too much at stake.

• LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Too easy to get dictatorial government Re: EDITORIAL: Let’s not shoot the messengers, March 2 I am puzzled: where are the U.S.’s ’univision’ Republicans pushing their country and its democracy? Are they focused more on their interest and choose to ignore Trump’s peculiar behaviour, unethical ideas and obsessions for control and popularity? Do they care that free speech and the valuable service that media plays continues without threats of being closed down? Is integrity present in the Republican senate’s operations, or is sleeping profoundly? I know how easy is to get to a dictatorial-style government. I left my country
in the search of a voice and rights. I would hate to see Americans lose theirs. Francesca Schembri Stouffville
Important to cherish, Canadian values It has become increasingly controversial and subjective to talk or write about Canadian values. The media, the politicians, and everyone else seem to be misguiding the core principles that most newcomers to Canada cherish. I am a former refugee; my family and I landed here on a ministerial permit, cherished the opportunity afforded to us and tried us best to integrate ourselves into the system. It was Canada’s core values which allowed us to find the peace and tranquility we were seeking!

These core values of tolerance, acceptance and fundamental freedoms are the part of Canadian values that we must celebrate without hesitation. The values which our community championed as a way to rejuvenate our spirits and establish a second chance for ourselves are now being deemed not politically correct. There are communities in Canada who adequately respect the values and adapt them as integral aspects of their lives. These values are so important that those who continue to migrate to Canada must comply with them or else we will only disturb what seems to be working well. You can be a NDP, Liberal, Conservative or Green party member, but we all need to celebrate Canadian values and educate our chil-
dren about them as well. If we don’t’ cherish our values, we will only go down a reckless path. Raj Subramaniam Markham

It’s up to the authors and their messengers not to contrive, script or filter the news to the audience and to present it in a fair, balanced and impartial way. A tin can of maple syrup is perhaps the most quintessentially Canadian food. At the store it's a key ingredient that we use en masse in both our bakery and kitchen, substituting it for sugar or corn syrup as much as possible. We actually have to order it by the pallet from our friends at Fortune Farms, our producer of choice located in Almonte, Ontario (southwest of Ottawa). Once a year when the sap starts running we like to feature all our maple products, paying homage to a national tradition that we are proud to be a part of. Enjoy!
These are our boneless chicken breasts that have been marinated in our maple-mustard dressing. These can be grilled on the Q, or oven-roasted. There is good reason that this is our best-selling marinade, as it’s totally sublime! Reg. 12.49/lb

Markham’s Ava Liu, 22, stands in front of a breath-taking view of the Andes mountains. Liu is on a 6-month Cuso mission in Peru and returns home in May.
Woman gains great insight from Andes experience in Peru TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com A 22-year-old Markham resident who has spent the past four months working in the Andes mountains in Peru is coming home this May to York Region with a whole new perspective on life. "I knew a little about Andean culture but not too much before I got here," said Ava Liu, from the Andes mountains. "I find it sad because there is a stigma around the indigenous community. The good thing is that the communities have been able to keep their traditions alive," she said. Liu added that the population of Cusco, the area she worked in now speaks the indigenous language
and is learning about indigenous Quechua culture. Liu, who speaks French as well as English and Mandarin, moved to Markham from Scarborough five years ago and went to Markville Secondary School for her final year of high school. She has a keen interest in non-governmental organizations and international relief work and considers this Cuso (Canadian University Students Overseas) placement a key part of her educational and work development. Liu said her time in the Andes marked the first time she has lived on her own and had her own apartment and for her, it’s been a great learning experience.

AISLE FOUR? WHAT’S IN
Mariella has stocked our shelves with some maple magic. It wouldn’t really be much of a maple week if we didn’t feature our private label Maple Syrup. We source this from the aforementioned Fortune Farms and it is of the highest quality. It’s been our go-to for years and years. Reg. $18.99/500ml Next we’ll have homemade Maple Cookies from a family farm in Quebec. Maple sugar cookies in the shape of a maple leaf with maple icing…need I say more? Reg. $5.99/400g box Also from said family farm, they make a delicious Maple Tea. It’s Ceylon tea made with maple syrup. Certainly a lighter option than just drinking maple syrup straight out of the bottle! Reg. $5.99/box One look at our bakery this weekend and you’ll see that maple syrup and nuts are a match made in heaven. So we’ll feature three different types of nuts for you to snack on. We’ll have Maple Pecans, Maple Almonds (both Reg. $5.99/200g bag) and Maple Peanuts (Reg. $3.99/200g bag) Lastly from our friends at Muskoka Roastery, we’ll have their bags of Maple Coffee. Sweet, bold and a lovely brew to wake up to! Reg. $17.99/bag

COUNCIL
Massive York Downs development has both sides talking TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com With the 2,400-residential-unit development proposed for York Downs Golf Club, the key issue between developer, staff and residents is to keep on talking. That’s what Regional Coun. Jim Jones, development services committee chair, suggested early on in Monday’s initial meeting on the development application. After several citizens complained to the committee they didn’t know enough about the 417-acre development proposed for north of 16th Avenue between Warden Avenue and Kennedy Road, Jones said the answer lies in more informal questionand-answer discussions between residents and the developer facilitated by councillors in a subcom-
mitee format. It appears the Unionville subcommittee of council will be the vehicle under which residents will strive to get the answers they’re looking for. Michael Gannon, a resident of Delhi Crescent just south of York Downs Golf Club, spoke of the numerous concerns for which he’s seeking answers. "A large condo block is proposed across 16th Avenue; the condo block is totally out of character with the surrounding neighbourhood," said Gannon who wondered why the condo block couldn’t be located elsewhere within the development. He also asked if the density target of 19.2 units per developable hectare was necessary, what tree plan was proposed for the development and the compensation value for
Metroland
The proposed Markham York Downs development would put 2,400 residential units on 308 acres of developable land on 417 acres of the York Downs Golf Club between Warden Avenue and Kennedy Road north of 16th Avenue. any trees cut down, that an exit to Warden Avenue be planned (one is not cur-
rently part of the developer’s plan) so that residents aren’t subject to an-
other 5,000 cars exiting onto 16th Avenue, "which is already clogged any-
way." He said the development should be put off until 16th Avenue is widened. Coun. Valerie Burke made it clear the proposal would not get her support. "Right now this land is providing huge natural benefits; cooling, stormwater benefits, natural irrigation, carbon sequestration and homes for wildlife. What really concerns me is all the wildlife that will be driven out of this property. "To me, I cannot support this application. My conscience will not let me support this application." Residents will have a chance to hear from the developer at a public meeting at council chambers, April 5 at 7 p.m. The application is still in its initial stages and no decisions have yet been made.

Markham Bowl rescues cancer fundraiser for rider ,
fundraiser on Saturday, April 8, to generate as much cash as possible for this year’s event, which takes place June 10-11, and involves riding from Toronto to Niagara Falls. Each rider, Osborne said, is counted on to raise $2,500, but he said his crew has been raising $6,000 apiece lately. This year they will be riding for Whitby resident Paul Von Zuben, who, with Princess Margaret’s help, has conquered cancer.

Blair Osborne had a problem about four years ago when he need a bowling alley to host his annual Ride for Cancer fundraiser for Princess Margaret Hospital. After searching high and low for a new venue for the event, the Pickering resident found a saviour in Markham Bowl owner Candace Bryon. The Markham busi-
nesswoman agreed to host the fundraiser and has done so every year since. "Candace has a big heart for fundraising," said Osborne, who has raised $48,000 for Princess Margaret in the 10 years he’s ridden for the hospital. His pal June Thomas of Ajax has joined him over the past five rides, raising just over $19,000. Osborne will be inviting all his buddies to Markham Bowl on Hwy. 7 for his Ride for Cancer

School of Rock Markham is the music school you wish you’d had when you were kids! School of Rock is an ingenious concept that gets kids and adults from the lesson room to the stage. Starting with a single school in Philadelphia in 1998, to a movie made in 2003 and now a Broadway musical and Nickelodeon TV show, School of Rock now has over 180 locations in nine countries, proving a winning concept! We teach guitar, bass, keys, drums & vocals for ages 2- Adult and offer Summer Day Camps for 9-18 year olds. Often Imitated, Never Duplicated!

CRISIS
Conscription Crisis of 1917 After the Battle of the Somme in 1916, Prime Minister Robert Borden realized the gap between recruits, 300,000, and the number of soldiers he promised by the end of the year, 500,000, was huge. The imposition of conscription caused a weekend of rioting in Quebec between March 28 and April 1, 1918. By Good Friday evening, an estimated 15,000 rioters had ransacked the conscription office as well as two pro-conscription newspapers in Quebec City. In the end, about 125,000 men were conscripted and only about 25,000 served at the front.

26 BUSINESS
Local mom’s emoji patches taking world by storm Easy Peasy Patches sells thousands of designs AMANDA PERSICO apersico@yrmg.com Ripped jeans are a part of childhood, where playing hard is not only a child’s dream, but their job. And as a mom of three, Andrea Winarski made it her job - and later her business to fix those tattered pants. A quick and cool fix was using patches to cover up holes and tears. The iron-on patches didn’t stick to jeans, Winarski said, and she wasn’t about to take up sewing to sew on embroidered patches. It took the Markham resident about year to develop the right fabric-adhesive combination, which is now patented. "It’s not a sticker. It’s not a patch. It’s a sticker-
patch," she said. "It’s so simple. But when people see it, it’s like ah-ha." That was six years ago, when Winarski founded Grab-a-Scab. "My kids always had scabbed knees, they thought it was cool," said the former pharmaceutical sales representative. Grab-a-Scab morphed into Easy Peasy Patches, which are manufactured in Aurora. Initially, her focus was creating patches to cover holes in ripped jeans. But as the company - and her children - grew, ripped jeans are now a sliver of the business. With thousands of patch designs, Easy Peasy Patches can be found on backpacks, water bottles, clothes, sports jerseys, shoes, books, laptops and bags. "It’s like the old sticker collections of ’80s," she said. "It’s about personalizing your stuff and upcycling, making something new again." She started by dedicat-
ing 30 minutes each week creating patches, then 30 minutes each day and soon it became a full-time endeavour. "You can’t do things halfway," she said. "It’s all in or you never know." Winarski is one of two dozen Canadian moms nominated for the annual Mompreneur Award, which recognizes the hard work and talent of busy mom entrepreneurs. "It was a big jump," she said of starting Easy Peasy Patches. "Solving a problem was my inspiration for starting the company." And setting the example of not being scared to take risks is what keeps her motivated, she added. And it’s not just clothes and backpacks. Easy Peasy Patches have been used to mend tubes, barbecue covers, trampolines and screen doors with orders coming from as far away as Fiji, Malta and New Zealand. This year, Winarski launched a line of larger
utility patches, ideal for mending snow pants, reflective strips for bikes and a collection of allergy awareness patches, designed with the help of a professional allergist. The line was inspired by her child’s friend who had a food allergy. "I knew there was an allergy, but I couldn’t always remember what it was," Winarski said. "Seeing the patch on a backpack, keeps the allergy top of mind for parents and teachers." Winarski works with a collection of graphic artists who design patches with kids in mind, patches that make you chuckle. One of the top selling patches is the "poop" emoji followed by the large black utility patch designed for mending snow pants. "My kids said, I had to have the poop emoji," she said. Make your basement the ultimate comfort zone By Scott McGillivray When it comes to basement renovations, there are some must-haves to create a cosy, relaxing retreat. Remember that the most important elements start at the heart of your renovation, rather than in the finishes. Ensure your basement lives up to its potential by following these five tips: 1. Start with a dry space. Address any signs of moisture and select materials that work well below grade, where humidity and moisture levels can pose challenges. 2. Choose an insulation that can stand up to moisture. One made of inorganic materials that can dry out if exposed to moisture is best. I prefer stone wool over fibreglass just for that reason. To reduce heating bills, prevent thermal bridging and increase energy efficiency,
I recommend installing a product called Roxul Comfortboard 80 against the exterior walls. Build your studs against the Comfortboard 80, preferably with treated lumber, and fill the studs with R14 Comfortbatt to achieve a basement wall with an R-value of 20. Finish with a smart membrane vapour control layer, tuck tape and moisture-resistant drywall. Insulate basement headers for maximum efficiency. 3. Bring in the professionals. Things like electrical, plumbing, and HVAC needs to be done properly and to code for safety reasons. Ensure tradespeople are licensed and insured. Ask for references. When wiring the electrical, plan for sufficient lighting to prevent a cavernous feel. For instant ambiance, recessed lights on a dimmer switch are a great option. A fireplace, cosy furniture and moisture-resistant flooring are the keys to designing a basement your family will be happy to spend time in.

4. Shut out the sound. Before you close in the walls, consider adding soundproofing for peace and quiet. Look for an insulation product called Safe ‘n’ Sound. I like it because it’s easy to install and adds important fire resistance. One layer should suffice. Simply press into place between the studs or joists. Use resilient channels before adding dry wall. This will separate the floor joists from the drywall, minimizing impact noise transferring from
room to room. 5. Finish up with flooring. A good subfloor and moistureresistant flooring such as vinyl, laminate or tile will finish the job. For increased warmth, consider in-floor radiant heating, a gas or electric fireplace or area rugs. Paint with warm or soft colours for a bright, airy tone. Select cosy furniture, but avoid oversized pieces that can overwhelm the space. Finally, reassess your new space every six months. Does
it fulfill its purpose as a relaxing retreat? If not, purge items that cause clutter or that you simply don’t love. Reinvigorate the space by adding interesting accessories. After all, isn’t life too short for an uninspired home?

How to create the perfect playroom Children are full of surprises. From your heart to your home, they sure do make an impact. If there's room to spare, it's great for kids to have their own space––a place to play, make noise, jump around and unleash their creativity. But how does one create this super room that has to be fun, safe, multifunctional and inspiring? It's more than possible, and it just might save your sanity. Follow these top tips to create the perfect playroom.
SOUNDPROOF: Kids are noisy. You might be thinking there's no way around this one, but soundproofing insulation has you covered. If you don't enjoy the noise of boisterous play permeating to other areas of the house, than this is the perfect solution. Experts often recommend a product called Roxul Safe 'n' Sound, because its high-density composition and non-directional fibre structure do an amazing job of turning your indoor playground into a quiet zone. It is also made with natural and recycled materials and is Greenguard certified for indoor air quality.
STORAGE: Whether it's toys, board games, books, tiny collections or craft supplies, it's sometimes surprising how much stuff there is to tuck away. Keep things looking tidy and organized with clever storage pieces. Look for items that pull double duty––great from a design perspective, but with easy-access, pull-out drawers or shelving. Neatly labeled clear plastic containers are also a favourite, as are built-in benches with toss cushions. Be sure to keep plenty of open floor space, because kids love to and need
to move.
SAFETY: It's important to tailor safety measures to your child's age and stage of development. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that all large furnishings are secured to the wall to prevent toppling. Soft storage drawers or lightweight bins are better than heavy plastic tubs or large toy boxes. Outlet covers
can help reduce risk for younger children. Consider green building materials and low VOC paints. Install parental controls on any computers, tablets or electronic devices.
SPECIAL FEATURES: Kids love to unleash their imaginations. If you have the space, consider a small, elevated stage for performances. A painted chalkboard wall is always
a hit, along with a designated gallery for their creative masterpieces. A play table is ideal for colouring, painting and crafts, while cushioned benches or bean bag chairs can provide a relaxing place to kick back and read a book. Don't forget bookshelves––active readers have active imaginations, and that's sure to inspire even more amazing ways to play.

Markham Fair’s Long-time Commitment to Our Community’s Health Markham Faircrow (Markham Fair’s Scarecrow Mascott) along with Darren Little, 2016 1st Vice President made a recent visit to Markham Stouffville Hospital to make their annual contribution to support the community hospital. The generous gift, presented to Allan Bell, Director, Community Relations & Corporate Partnerships will benefit the Stollery Family Centre for Childbirth and Children and the Dr. Bear program. Markham Fair and the World’s Finest Show have been long-time supporters of the hospital. Government can’t fund all equipment and other priority needs. Markham Fair’s continued generosity will ensure excellent health care for the thousands of patients and families who on rely on Markham Stouffville Hospital, today and in the future.
They each had 20 slides and 20 seconds - and a great story to tell last Friday at Unionville’s Varley Art Gallery. Seven people boldly came forward to share an aspect of their experience and opened up at PechaKucha, a Japanese-inspired event that allows each speaker the chance to briefly tell a tale. PechaKucha was first performed in Tokyo, Japan, in 2003 and is now a regular event in 900 cities around the globe. Friday’s event was the 14th edition in Markham. Each speaker has precisely six minutes and 40 seconds or 400 seconds, to tell a story that will capture a crowd. Using their imagina-
tions and what visuals they had at hand, speakers such as Sarid Layton talked about what it was like to be a Jehovah’s Witness, Rajie Kabli discussed what it was like to take mind-altering and spirit-changing plant medicine in Costa Rica and Amy Arsenio told the crowd what "drugs" artists throughout the ages have used to get them in the artistic spirit. Then there was teacher Chris Cluff who used innovative slides and ideas to talk about teaching and learning styles, Gaby Cameto and her desire to step outside her comfort zone by climbing Africa’s highest mountain with her teenage son and Unionville’s own Shanta Sundarason who explained how everyone could take part in a social justice cause. She also had kids from her group the
Giving Tree, fly paper airplanes with inspirational messages on them into the sold-out crowd and give out "Hope" cookies. Last, but not least, was York Region Media Group’s own crime and justice reporter Jeremy Grimaldi, who made a presentation about Markham’s Jennifer Pan and her doomed plot to kill her parents. Grimaldi has penned the true-crime book A Daughter’s Deadly Deception about the Pan murder and covered the nearly year-long trial. PechaKucha also featured free food and music for those who attended as well as SpeakerBoxing, a spoken word performance by Gavin Russell. The next PechaKucha event scheduled for the Varley Art Gallery is set for June 9. For more information check out PechaKucha Markham on Facebook.

The Ontario government needs to do more to combat human trafficking, Jackson said, adding parents and caregivers must be aware of the insidious methods predators use to lure victims into human trafficking. "The typical approach here, and this is what we really want to educate parents and grandparents and youth leaders and people in the community (about), is that a 20- or 21-year-old guy who looks unassuming is going to actually target your 14-or 15-year-old daughter," Jackson said. In relation to the Georgina incident, Ahmed Sheikh, 26, of Richmond Hill, is charged with numerous offences, including trafficking, kidnapping, forcible confinement, sexual assault, trafficking cocaine and breach of probation. What often begins as a seemingly romantic and trusting relationship can quickly result in the victim being trapped in the sex trade through threats, shame and violence, Jackson said. "It’s domestic, it’s violence, it’s slavery. The most vulnerable are between 12 and high school age, 16 or 17. Typically, she enters in at around age 13 or 14," she said, quoting research from the Alliance Against Modern Slavery Ontario Coalition Research Initiative on The Incidence of Human Trafficking in Ontario. "What we want to do is change the perception of what people think of this human being, that she is definitely for the most part not there of her own volition. About 24 per cent entered trafficking through pimps falsely portraying themselves as boyfriends and 96 per cent of victims have experienced multiple forms of violence, Stephanie Jackson said. "I think the perception, especially in a lovely suburb-type area like York Region, we don’t think something this dark and heinous is happening here. It’s always something that we would see in the news that is happening in Cambodia or Africa or just somewhere else but not that a culture that is sophisticated and privileged should be facing this kind of issue," she said, adding Newmarket and Markham appear to be "targeted" communities for human trafficking. "But the reality is that it
does happen and it is happening more and more. The Internet is a proponent in it. There is a dollar figure, and it’s really disgusting to say this, but each girl who is trafficked represents about $125,000 a year (in income for the trafficker)." Jackson is organizing She’s Not For Sale on March 28 in WhitchurchStouffville. It will feature keynote speaker Casandra Diamond, who will draw on her past experiences in the sex industry and her position now as director of BridgeNorth, a program of Grace Church in Newmarket that helps women trapped in prostitution, sexual exploitation and trafficking. Marianne Deeks, a youth worker and speaker with faith-based charity Youth Unlimited, will talk about building resiliency in youth and point to ways parents can talk to their

A new exhibition at the woodsy McMichael gallery invites you to contemplate the playful juxtaposi- tion of colourful Canadian wilderness landscapes with scenes from city life. Size Matters: Steve Driscoll and Finn O’Hara features 16 of Driscoll’s
large, luminous landscape paintings and 14 digital chromogenic (fullcolour, photographic) prints by O’Hara, which capture his collaborator’s paintings strategically erected in different urban settings. For instance, a wooded portage route stands on a side-
walk in Toronto’s bustling Queen Street West neighbourhood and a glowing northern lights landscape sits before a graffiti-sprayed concrete wall. Size Matters runs until Aug. 20. For more information, visit mcmichael.com.

Residents can’t get any help from 407, province TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com When it comes to getting some help with their fencing or soil issues, Markham residents who live along the 407 just can’t get no satisfaction. Not from Hwy. 407 officials and not from the Government of Ontario, both of whom have washed their hands of helping out beleaguered citizens who live along Rougehaven Way and Shouten Crescent who for years have asked for answers - and some compensation too. It’s not that many of the people who live along the fence line won’t pay to replace the rotted out and destroyed fencing that’s been there over 15 years. Most admit it’s on their private property and it’s therefore their expense to replace it. But the residents do place the blame for the problem on faulty soil erosion caused by either the
Ontario government or the 407, whichever authority is responsible, for erecting a berm they say has slid into the fence over the years, thus ruining it over time. Residents voiced their frustration with the process during a recent meeting called by Ward 4 Coun. Karen Rea. "Our fences are falling down and the berm seems to be pushing against the fence, rotting the fence, knocking the fence over, and it’s a big expense," said John Procenko, an area homeowner. "No one seems to take responsibility that the berm was put up incorrectly." The fence was made of high-quality materials and "it’s not meant to stay underwater as long as it does," said Shahe Kassardjian. Procenko believes someone should step up and take responsibility and pay for a new fence, disagreeing with some of
the other residents who say they would be willing to pay for their section of fencing. The Ontario Government said in a statement from Minister of Transportation and Vaughan MPP Steven Del Duca’s office: "We’re aware of this issue but do not have a role to play in the dispute. Noise walls, built by developers as part of new subdivisions and located on private lands are the responsibility of the new homeowners." As for 407/ETR, it also said it has no responsibility in the matter in a brief statement. "407 ETR has worked with the community and the Town of Markham to resolve the matter on a good neighbour basis," said Kevin Sack, 407 ETR vice-president of marketing, communications and government relations, in a statement. "The company has attended meetings
with town staff and the local councillor. 407 ETR has had engineers and staff in to examine the fences and has offered to address safety concerns by building a six-foot chain link fence on 407 ETR property in the areas affected and suggested various options to help address drainage issues... 407 ETR will continue to work with the community to
help resolve the matter and assist residents." Rea, who was signing up residents for a petition she will present to the Ontario government, is eager to get action taken on the issue. "I am still going to request a meeting with (Del Duca) . and if he refuses, I will go higher up," Rea said.
