Vimy Ridge: Track to battle laid by local soldiers
See what’s happening by visiting our online community calendar. www.yorkregion.com/events
uReport the news AMANDA PERSICO apersico@yrmg.com The Battle of Vimy Ridge is a defining moment in Canadian History, where the Canadian
Corps fought for the first time under the same banner. Between 15,000 and 20,000 Canadian troops crept over the ridge around 5:30 a.m. Easter Monday, April 9, 1917.
Those soldiers at the front lines had to be fed. "Trucks weren’t used as much during the First World War," said Ross Toms, an avid history buff and executive at the Royal Cana-
dian Legion branch in Richmond Hill. "The roads were not good. They used a narrow railway."

Headstones mark fallen soldiers at the Cabaret Rouge British Cemetery near Arras. The Canadian victory at Vimy Ridge was part of the larger battle of Arras.
Private Robert Buckles was born in 1897 in Long Branch, near Etobicoke. He was the youngest of four brothers, had brown hair and blue eyes, and enlisted in 1916 in Toronto. He served with the 38th Battalion Canadian Infantry. His family lived in Newmarket and ran a general store in Long Branch. The 19-year-old farmhand was instantly killed by enemy shell fire during the attack on Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917.
Vimy Ridge battle took its toll on York AMANDA PERSICO apersico@yrmg.com This year, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge April 9 to 12, 1917, a defining moment in Cana-
Private Frederick Leo Jennings was born in Stouffville in 1892 and served with the 3rd Battalion Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action on April 9, 1917 during the attack on Farbus Wood, a side battle taking place at the same time to capture the woods and secure Arras about four kilometres south of Vimy Ridge. The five-foot-10-inch baggage man with blue eyes enlisted in December 1915 in Toronto - 18 months after his marriage to Lillian Fern Jennings. Private Edgar Albert Bowes was born in 1887 in Concord. He served with the 13th Battalion Canadian Infantry.
dian history. Enemy forces captured the ridge early in the war and previous allied assaults were unsuccessful. Canadian forces moved to the front lines in late 1916 and spent the winter
strengthening communication lines, mining an intricate network of tunnels laced with explosives, and training rigorously in model trench systems and in mock ridge formations. For the first time, the
Canadian Corps divisions fought side-by-side as one united front. Part of the heavily-defended ridge was captured by noon on April 9. Days later, German forces retreated and the Battle of
Vimy Ridge was over. About 100,000 Canadian soldiers fought at Vimy Ridge, resulting in more than 10,000 casualties and close to 3,600 dead, including these eight men from York.
The 28-year-old farmer enlisted in March 1916 and was killed in action at Vimy Ridge 13 months later on April 9, 1917. According to census records, his family moved from Concord to Richmond Hill between 1911 and 1921. The 29-year-old with grey eyes and black hair is buried at the Vimy Memorial in France. Private Frederick Alfred Lake, served with the Royal Canadian Regiment and transferred to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was 37 years old when he was hit in the lung and killed by an enemy bullet while proceeding in
the attack at Vimy Ridge. The five-foot-nine-inch mechanical engineer with dark brown hair, brown eyes and a dark completion enlisted in Vancouver on July 8, 1916. He was born in Scott Township, which is now part of Uxbridge, and lived in Sutton West. Private Herbert Melville Beamish was born in Newmarket in 1894 and served with the 18th Battalion Canadian Infantry. The 21-year-old machinist with hazel eyes and brown hair enlisted in June 1915 in Niagara. The five-foot-eight-inch soldier was killed in action at Vimy Ridge April 12, 1917 - the last day of
the battle - at the age of 23 years old. He is commemorated at the Mount Pleasant cemetery in Toronto. Corporal Albert Edward Usherwood, born in Newmarket in 1896, served with the 2nd Regiment Canadian Mounted Rifles. He enlisted at the age of 19 in Alberta in February 1915. According to his military attestation papers, the 18-year-old horseman had a fair complexion with grey eyes and light brown hair. Usherwood was killed in action at Vimy Ridge, April 9, 1917. "Being with the battalion and
seeing a good deal of him, I am able to tell you that Bert was regarded as one of the bravest noncommissioned officers we had. He was a good, steady lad." wrote Chaplin Hon. Major Thomas Augustine Wilson to Usherwood’s mother, Mary. Private Earnest Barber was born in Kent, England in 1887 and died April 10, 1917. He served with the 2nd Regiment Canadian Mounted Rifles. The five-foot-five-inch tanner with blue eyes and brown hair enlisted in Toronto in 1915. He went missing after action and was reported dead April 10, 1917. Barber and his wife, Florence, lived in Newmarket.
Private Caldwell Eugene Brown, born in Aurora in 1892, served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. The five-foot-five-inch journalist with the Newmarket Era had grey eyes and light brown hair, and had enlisted in Toronto in December 1915, a month shy of his 24th birthday. Brown, then 25, was reported wounded and missing during the battle of Vimy Ridge. He was later reported killed in action on April 9, 1917. He was in a dugout trench that was blown by enemy shell fire, killing him instantly. His parents, Byron and Elizabeth, lived on Niagara Street in Newmarket.

OLDSCHOOLHAMS
Hitherto, it’s been me telling you the virtues of our ham, but I now have independent corroboration of my story. At the recent Ontario Independent Meat Processors’ Convention, our Maple Sugar Ham ($8.50/lb) won the Gold Award in the ham-making competition. It’s not that we’re so smart, or even innovative, it’ just our stubborn adherence to the idea of not cutting corners and taking shortcuts in the process of making our hams (or just about anything else we do for that matter). For Easter, ham is the meal of choice, and we offer three types: First, we make a great Traditional Bone-in Easter Ham ($3.99/lb). With the bone in, it’s available either whole or half, and it’s slow cooked over oak. Next is a Black Forest Ham ($8.50/lb). This is boneless, slow-smoked over oak and fully-cooked, ready-to-go. Third, we have our Maple Sugar Ham ($8.50/lb). These too are boneless, slow-roasted with maple and brown sugar until they are fully-cooked. What is different about our hams is that they are not ‘extended’ like commercially-produced hams. When you read the label on a supermarket ham and see the words “protein-added”, know that it’s not a good thing at all. What it means is that not all you are paying for, and eating, is actually ham, and what ham you do get is of a texture far different than what ham used to be like, and ours still is. It takes us longer to make these, and they shrink during the process rather than grow, but what you get is the genuine old-fashioned article. It’s best to order these early!
WE WILL BE
CLOSED ON
If you read my note of last week, you will know that our long-time Turkey farmer has retired, and that after an exhaustive search, we will be dealing with a new farmer from Palmerston, Ontario. By the time that you read this, our first shipment has arrived, and should you wish one earlier than Easter weekend, we can accommodate you. We have cooked a couple of these now……and enjoyed them…….but we will have to revise our cooking recommendations a bit as they seem to take a little longer in the oven. These will have the tried-and-true pop-up thermometers in them as of old, but it might be best to plan a little more time than before. The sizing available is about 15-16lbs, and the retail is $3.99/lb. Further, they will be available in portions and all the usual delicious preparations that you have come to expect from us.
TOMATOES&CUKES The local beefsteak tomatoes we’ve been getting in have been the perfect size and a lot firmer than the waterlogged Mexican ones we have to suffer through all winter. HALIBUT
GOOD FRIDAY 14 APRIL We’ll have fresh Halibut fillets from BC this week. Without a doubt the best whitefish, EASTER SUNDAY I’ve always been a massive fan of it. The first time I tried halibut was in the kitchen of our old store on Carlton. I watched Kulam grate a potato, wash the 16 APRIL starch off, layer it as a crust on a beautiful centercut filet, sear it in $ 00

STEAKS SUSHI BASEBALL
The Jays are back, and so is grill season so it only seemed appropriate that we make our famous Baseball Steaks. We take the end cuts off of our striploins, trim them nicely, pound them very thin and marinate them in our homemade teriyaki marinade. Fire up your BBQ to high and flash these on for thirty seconds a side and serve on a brioche or some soft bun – they make the best sandwich on Earth! (Don’t come empty/LB handed, Cookie!). EASTER-SSENTIALS TURKEYS!
While the imminent holiday may take a backseat to Christmas and Thanksgiving, I’ve always thought Easter to be one of the more exciting times of the year at our store, especially when it falls mid-April like it does this year. Flowers abound, local produce is soon to pop up here and there, the weather is getting warmer by the day, life is good! Around the floral gazebo, you’ll see a ton of seasonal stuff in bloom. April is Daffodil month, so those are a can’t miss! And we only ever get the best Tulips and Hyacinth available at the market. I’m not blessed with a green thumb, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the gorgeous pastel-coloured Hydrangea. Available in a variety of sizes, these always make a stunning statement and can be re-potted in better weather. If you’re looking for Lilies, we’ve got you: Easter Lilies, Asiatic Lilies, Tiger Lilies and Oriental Lilies are all available. Be sure to call Vi to order your custom Easter centerpieces. While the first local produce is still a few weeks away, there are a lot of great eats to be had. We’ll have the full range of lettuce mixes and greens from Meadowsweet Farms, just up the street from us on Warden. If you haven’t tried their Spicy Blend or their Lovely Lettuce, I highly suggest you do so. The Asparagus has been nothing short of spectacular, as have been the Local Tomatoes, especially the cherry toms on the vine. The berry season in California is starting and the Strawberries have been in top form, as have the Blueberries and Blackberries. Be sure not to miss out on our fresh cut fruit and veg bowls! They are ideal for a brunch or to snack on any time! The centerpiece of any holiday is always the meat! Whether you’re doing ham, lamb or beef, we’ve got the perfect condiment for you! If you’re going with ham, there’s really nothing better than Doreen’s Mustard Sauce. It’s been our go-to since day one and we haven’t tweaked it once. For lamb, we’ve got about a dozen mint jellies. My favourite is the Greave’s Mint Jelly. For beef, you cannot go wrong with Kozlik’s Horseradish! And if you’re trying one of our brand new turkeys, Doreen’s Cranberry Sauce is the essential condiment! While ham is delicious and flowers are all fine and dandy, and I always love some fresh produce, the best part of Easter, without a doubt, is the chocolate, and nobody does chocolate better than our friends at Aunt Sarah’s. They’ll be demo-ing two of their seasonal specialties – their Chocolate Bunny Ears and their irresistibly rich Peanut Butter Eggs. Double-whipped peanut butter encapsulated by milk chocolate – sign me up!

We’ll kick it off with our Kale Quinoa. We load this nutritious salad up with feta, black beans, red onion, diced pepper in a vibrant lemon vinaigrette. Featured at /100G Continuing on with the theme of kale and grains…we’ll have our Chicken Orzo & Kale Soup. This is a take on your basic chicken noodle where we throw in some chopped kale for flavour and texture and opt for orzo rather than a noodle. OFF Whenever we serve this at the café, I usually find myself coming back for more and more. Reg. $8.99/900ml Next up we’ll have two meatloaves that Cathy specially requested we make, a Turkey Meatloaf Stuffed with Spinach and Goat Cheese and also a Smoked Turkey Meatloaf. I’ve tried the latter of the two and I thought it /LOAF was awesome. Moist, just the right amount of smoky, and didn’t sit as heavy PAN as its beef-based cousin. Both Next up is our Sous Vide Special! This is based off Evan’s recent trip to Scottsdale, AZ when he had a steak that was served with melted smoked butter. We’ve recreated this with a New York Striploin w/ Smoked Butter Medallion. Pop the bag in boiling OFF water for 10 minutes, cut it open and you’ll have a tender piece of beef that’s been bathed in smoky, rich butter. MMMM…. Reg. $7.99/100g Our dressing of the week will be Rita’s Greek Dressing. Our beloved cashier, Rita, can be found at the front of the store Monday to Friday afternoons and at the OFF Duchess throwing back a few ice cold brewskis every Tuesday evening. Though of Italian background, she makes a mean Greek dressing. Reg. $5.99/250ml Finally, we’ll have a Chicken Cordon Bleu Pizza this week. Our aforementioned ham, grilled chicken, Swiss cheese and sautéed kale on our homemade red sauce. Nom nom nom! THIS WEEK
I challenged Mariella to bring in some really exciting cheeses for you guys to make an Easter cheeseboard this week and boy, did she ever deliver. We’ll have not one, not two, not three, but FOUR specials this week! We’ll have Swiss Emmental and Cave-Aged Gruyere. These are both semi-firm cheeses, similar to Swiss but not rubbery like the devoid-of-flavour Americanized version. Both are nutty in flavour and perfect for melting (fondue or French onion soup, anyone?). I might give the edge to the Gruyere as it’s usually a touch creamier, but you can’t go wrong here and both would be excellent to nibble OFF on with any leftover ham you might have! Reg. $4.99 /100g and $7.99/100g respectively Secondly we’ll have two new artisanal cheeses from Quebec. The first is Tomme de Grosse-Ile (not to be confused with myself, Tom-ofUnionville). This cheese comes in a rough brown rind holding a rich, golden paste within. Creamy in texture, undeniably buttery and salty in flavour, this cheese needs no companion save a crusty baguette and a pint of ale. We’ll also have Riopelle de l’Isle. Coming from Ile-aux-Grues (Goose Island), a small island in the St. Lawrence River with a population of only 156 people. They raise cows without the use of chemicals and pesticides and produce this amazingly rich, soft cheese. It has a very woodsy flavour, reminiscent of hazelnuts and OFF mushrooms. Skip the brie and grab a wedge of this masterpiece instead. Both reg. $8.99/100g

They’re called all-candidates debates for a reason
The Markham Economist & Sun, published every Thursday, is a division of the Metroland Media Group Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Torstar Corporation. The Metroland family of newspapers is comprised of more than 100 community publications across Ontario.
During an election, it’s not always an easy task for voters to get a handle on who’s running and what they stand for. Busy schedules mean it can be challenging for candidates to connect with citizens at the doorstep, and pamphlets seldom offer more than a selection of partyapproved talking points. Given that, all-candidates events are an important part of the process as they allow voters to not only hear their would-be representatives discuss important issues but ask questions as well. Well, that’s how it’s supposed to work. More and more, all-candidates debates are looking like some-candidates debates. Take for example, what was intended to be an allcandidates debate for the Markham-Thornhill byelection that took place March 30. Rather than learning more about all seven individuals vying to replace longtime Liberal MP John McCallum, who was named ambassador to China earlier this year, those who attended the event heard from just four candidates. Despite organizer John Richardson sending out invitations to the candidates on March 21, neither Liberal candidate Mary Ng nor Conservative candidate Ragavan Paranchothy took part. Paranchothy chalked up his inability to attend to a scheduling conflict, while Ng’s campaign claimed it received the invite too late and that she had a series of roundtables and meetings with residents with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Libertarian Party candidate Brendan Thomas Reilly also didn’t make it. Residents who came to the event couldn’t help but feel slighted. "I feel personally quite insulted," said one attendee in the audience of about 20. "This is an all-candidates debate and I’m not going to get information from some of the candidates." While that’s hardly a big turnout, who knows if the numbers might have been higher if all the candidates had been present. Similarly, we can’t know for certain what, if any, effect the no-shows had on the ballots cast in Monday’s byelection, but it would have been nice to know that voters in the riding had at least a single chance to hear and potentially interact with all of those running before going to the polls. A healthy democracy involves the people, and allcandidates meetings and other such events are an important part of the process. When candidates opt not to participate or otherwise fail to make themselves available to those they wish to represent, it can only serve to breed cynicism and apathy among the electorate.

• LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Open discourse needed on climate change Re: Weather expert predicts York Region will be warmer and stormier in 50 years, March 16. How can you tell a scientist from an activist? I would suggest it is by the language they use. Serious scientists deal with data and facts. They do not engage in ad hominem attacks when the findings of others contradict their own. When David Phillips of Environment Canada calls others "phoneys" and "charlatans" and complains that people don’t give "a rat’s ass" about "skinny polar bears", he is not speaking as a scientist but rather as a climate change activist.
Accordingly, we are under no obligation to accept his comments as factual. As even a brief Google search will demonstrate, polar bear populations are increasing, not declining. There is also wide disagreement as to the efficacy of current climate models to forecast future conditions, particularly with respect to regional systems. Our climate is changing, it always has been. However, we do not yet have anywhere close to a full understanding of the impact humans have on climate systems, or in many cases, even fundamental parameters such as the effect of cloud formations. We need a more open discourse on the real science of climate change instead of the made-for-media propaganda from individuals such as Phillips,

Battalion ’kept together because they knew their stuff’ l Continued from front
Building those small narrow railroads was left to the Canadian Railroad Troops, which included the 127th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 127th Battalion consisted of young men from York County, namely the Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Aurora, Unionville and Georgina Island area, Toms said. The battalion left for England in 1916. "Normally, the battalion would have been broken up and soldiers put in the regular pool," said Toms, who is also a contributor to the Canadian Great War Project, an online database of Canadian soldiers who served and died in the First World War.
"But this battalion was kept together because they knew their stuff," he said of the engineer soldiers who commandeered the battalion. Canadian troops arrived at Vimy Ridge late 1916 and spent the winter months preparing for battle. Along with training for the attack, troops undertook extensive mining operations, where tunnels were dug under enemy lines, lined with large explosives. Another elaborate tunnel system was used by Allied forces lined with train tracks, piped water, lights and underground bunkers to

stockpile supplies, ammunition and food. By noon April 9, 1917 part of the heavily defended ridge was captured. By the end, more than 100,000 Canadian soldiers fought in the battle, resulting in more than 10,000 casualties and close to 3,600 were killed. "Look at the amount of shells used to destroy the barbed wire and ruin enemy trenches," Toms said. The Canadian forces used small mine cars on railroad tracks to supply ammunition to the troops as well as help carry the wounded soldiers out to safety, he added.

Woman charged with tree-cutting back in court May 18

The woman charged with numerous bylaw infractions by the City of Markham after three trees were cut down on her Unionville property in December has had her case put over to May 18. Jailing Wu, listed as the owner of 47/51 Gainsville Ave., in Unionville, was represented by her attorney David Goodman in Richmond Hill provincial court on Thursday. Goodman, new to the case, said he needed time to review disclosure and expected to be briefed on the matter in time for Wu’s next appearance in six weeks. Markham prosecutor Chris Bendick indicated there was still an ongoing investigation regarding Wu’s

The charges on the Gainsville Avenue property spurred an outcry from neighbours after three mature trees were cut down late last year. Some neighbours were in court watching the proceedings. Some were also at Wu’s first appearance in court back on Feb. 9 in Richmond
Hill. Residents have called on the city to hasten a planned review of the 2008 tree preservation bylaw in the hopes of strengthening it and preventing property owners from cutting down trees, paying small fines and reaping profits after redeveloping the properties for much higher values.

How to help kids get into golf Golf is a game of skill that can take years, if not decades, to master. Many golfers find their time on the golf course both rewarding and relaxing, even on those days when the fairways seem impossible to find. Though many players never swing a golf club until they reach adulthood, it’s never too early to hit the links. Some of the world’s most accomplished golfers, including four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods, began playing as toddlers, and many feel that getting an early start can lead to a more successful game down the road. Getting kids into golf is a great way for parents to bond with their children while enjoying the great outdoors. Golf can also be used to teach kids humility, sportsmanship and the importance of hard work. Thanks to the often frustrating nature of golf, parents may find it somewhat challenging to instil a love of the game in their youngsters. But there are ways to introduce kids to this won-

City Sunshine numbers up 31% TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com The sun sure shone on City of Markham employees in 2016 as 290 people employed by the municipality made over $100,000, a massive increase from the 220 who reached the six-figure club in 2015. That amounted to a 31 per cent increase in the Sunshine List, the annual revelation of Ontario public servants who make
$100,000 or more, in Markham from 2015 to 2016. A large part of the increase came from Markham Fire and Emergency Services personnel who skyrocketed from 73 employees over $100,000 in 2015 to 117 this past year, an increase of 44 employees or well over 50 per cent. The top earner in the municipality remains chief administrative officer Andy Taylor, who
earned $261,279.04 in 2016, a raise from the $260,454.93 he made in 2015. The city’s three commissioners, James Baird in community and development services - Trinela Cane in community and corporate services, and Brenda Librecz in community and fire services all made identical salaries of $208,321.10, a slight increase from 2015, when the trio were paid $205,577.31.
York hospital CEOs earn healthy salaries TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com Helping people get well pays really well. The three chief executives of York Region’s hospitals earned big bucks this past year, as revealed by the province’s annual Sunshine list. Topping the pay packet
was Mackenzie Health president and CEO Altaf Stationwala, who earned a reported $515,411.61 in 2016. That’s up from $471,524.20 in 2015 and $466,763.99 in 2014. Next on the list was Dr. Dave R. Williams, president and CEO of Southlake Regional Health Centre, who actually took a tiny pay cut in 2016 by earning
$482,662.34. That’s down precisely $2.02 from his salary in 2015. Williams earned $479,470.96 in 2014. Bringing up the rear of the three in York Region was Markham-Stouffville Hospital president and CEO JoAnne Mar, who earned $410,836.48 in her first full year at the helm of the hospital.

He decided to pursue a military career joining the Governor General’s Body Guards in 1904 as a private. Mackenzie rose through the ranks first becoming a squadron sergeant-major then a lieutenant in 1912. At the beginning of the First World War, he was transferred to France where he served with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles. He was quickly promoted to captain as a result of his pre-war militia experience.

The invisible systems in a home often are taken for granted. When such systems are working as expected, daily life moves along smoothly. However, when a system goes awry, it can negatively impact routines and may create a dangerous home environment. This is especially true when something goes wrong with a home’s electrical system. Faulty wiring is a leading cause of residential fires. Many homeowners, particularly those who live in older homes, might be living in properties that have outdated electrical systems. Having old wiring and/or insufficient amperage in a house can endanger the people who live there. It also may damage appliances and make it difficult to sell a property. It can be difficult to gauge exactly when to overhaul an electrical system. Unless circuits routinely trip or lights often dim, homeowners may put off the work. But degrading wires or overextended circuitry can pose a fire risk, so it is best to address electrical systems promptly. Home inspections may uncover electrical problems. Some homeowners may discover potential trouble while making renovations that require opening up walls or tearing them down, exposing the wires. Still other homeowners learn about electrical systems when they’re adding new, large appliances or other gadgets that consume more power
than existing items. These devices may continually cause power outages in the house, such as tripping the circuit breaker or popping a fuse. When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing obsolete or dangerous items. Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit (all of the outlets linked on one wire). Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic. Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a
small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms
and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well. Electrical systems are the heart of

a home, delivering power where it is needed. It is essential to keep such systems up-to-date so they can handle the power demands of everyday life.

Tips to give your tiny kitchen huge style They say good things come in small packages, but it may not always feel that way when you are trying to prepare for a dinner party in a cramped kitchen. The experts at Haier, who specialize in small kitchen spaces, have compiled a list of simple tips and tricks that can make even the tiniest kitchen space can feel larger than life. 1. Declutter, declutter, declutter. Even a few pieces out of place can throw off a small space, so decluttering is key. Pare back your kitchen accessories to the necessities. 2. Scale your appliances. Large appliances can eat up valuable square footage and be visually overwhelming. Instead, choose appliances that
are specifically designed for smaller kitchens the Haier brand, newly available across Canada, is a great option, offering a range of contemporary compact appliances that don't sacrifice performance for space efficiency. For example, their dual-fuel freestanding range is small in size, coming in at only two cubic feet, but packs a big punch with its sleek design and European convection feature. 3. Keep it light. When choosing the colour palette for your kitchen, stick to neutral tones to expand and illuminate the walls. Keep both the walls and cabinetry the same colour to make the space appear bigger than it is. Use accessories like a

bright kettle or tableware to add pops of colour. 4. Smart storage. Avoid using up precious countertop space for storage. Instead, think vertical, using hooks and shelves to maximize storage. Upper shelves can be used to store seasonal or largely decorative items. 5. Make a statement. Just because the space is small, not everything in it needs to be tiny. Filling the room with small accessories, small art and
small furniture can make the whole room feel miniature or cluttered. Instead, choose a single statement piece — a lighting fixture, or a piece of art — to pull the room together and amp up your style. Homeowners often aspire to have attractive backyards that look like they belong in a magazine. While these can be picturesque and functional for adults, they may not be entirely practical for homeowners who have young children, especially when the majority of the yard is covered with paving stones or concrete. When young children are part of a household, homeowners may benefit by designing yards that are both functional and fun. Incorporating safe play areas for kids is one way to unlock the potential of both big and small backyards. As children run off to enjoy a playground, safety is the last thing on their minds. Kids are most interested in scaling ladders to tree houses or coasting down slides. That’s why adults must take it upon themselves to keep injury prevention in mind. SafestPlayground.com indicates that playground-related injuries routinely result in severe fractures, internal injuries, concussions, and dislocations. In the majority of playground injuries to children younger than age five, the head and face are affected. Children between the ages of five and nine experience more leg and arm injuries than younger kids. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states 70 per cent of children’s injuries occur on home playgrounds. More than 28,000 children are injured each year on playgrounds across Canada, according to Parachute, a national injury prevention organization. When considering playground equipment for the yard, parents need to make safety a priority. The Canada Safety Society advises parents to follow the “5 S’s of Playground Safety: Surface, structures, site, supervision, and safety. t 4VSGBDF Parents should assume that children will fall. To lessen the blow of falls, choose playground equipment with a perimeter of 1.8 metres of a softer surface, such as sand, pea gravel, rubber pieces or wood chips. This material should be between 15 and 30 centimetres deep. t Structure: The structure of the play equipment should be built from sturdy materials. Pressuretreated lumber was once the standard, but it’s not advisable for kids’ playgrounds, as the chemicals used in the lumber can leach and young

children may actually bite or pick at the wood. Use cedar or another wood that resists decay. Once the structure is built, inspect it frequently for damage. t 4JUF Look around the landscape for an ideal place to locate the playset. There should be no obstacles that children can hit while sliding or swinging. Avoid overhanging branches and do not place equipment too close to trees or fencing. Try to keep the set out of direct sunlight, which can make components heat up and scald young bodies. t Supervision: Do not leave children alone while they are playing. Prevent children from using the playset in an incorrect manner. t Safety: Follow the directions for installation. Make sure all posts are anchored into the ground securely. Railings should be spaced so that children cannot get stuck between them. Check that metal components have not rusted and that there is no additional excessive wear. Be sure that no tools or other dangerous items are left around the yard. Backyard playgrounds should be built with safety in mind. Learn the rules of play equipment and yard safety.

SIMONE JOSEPH sjoseph@yrmg.com Lieutenant-Colonel Sandi Banerjee has been to Vimy Ridge many times. He knows well the history and significance of this French landmark. But when he visits this month, his trip will be special. This time, the Thornhill resident takes the journey alongside his wife, son, daughter and 10 Thornlea Secondary School students as well as staff. This time, it will be the 100th anniversary of the battle, the commemoration of a historic win for Canada. Banerjee has high hopes for the Thornlea students journeying to France. "I hope they get the same sense of pride I did my first time there," he said. "I hope they get a sense of national accomplishment. This effort was the whole of Canada . It was the first time every regiment was there." The attack on Vimy Ridge, an attack on the Ger-
mans in northern France, began on April 9, 1917. It was a costly victory, which left 3,598 Canadians dead. But the Canadian success would later be called a defining moment for Canada. The Vimy Memorial was unveiled in 1936. It reminds visitors of the 11,285 Canadian soldiers killed in France who have no known graves. The Thornlea students will visit the Vimy Region, including of course the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, which pays tribute to more than 10,000 soldiers killed or wounded in battle. The students will join fellow Canadians for the 100th anniversary ceremonies of Canada’s victory in Vimy Ridge. The students will also be taking a detour to an elementary school in Anisy, France. The high school students will witness a road dedication. The people of Anisy are naming a road after Clarke Lawson, a soldier from Toronto killed in World War Two.

Lt.-Col. Sandi Banerjee of The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada holds wooden poppies that 11 students headed for Vimy Ridge in France made and sold to help raise funds to assist veterans dealing with mental illness and the families of fallen soldiers. Their students’ efforts raised $1,200 for the cause. Grade 11 student Reannah Ennis is one of the Thornlea students participating in the trip. Asked which aspect of the battle of Vimy Ridge she found most
interesting, she responds with two interesting aspects: "All three (Canadian) regiments were battling together. Canadians came up with the battle plan."
Gordon Izumi, head of the history department at Thornlea S.S., sees this trip as a way of making history real for his students. "There’s no replacement for
experiential learning," he said. "It’s the best kind of learning". Izumi is glad the students will be surrounded by people with a connection to Vimy. "When you are there with the veterans and the families of people who died, it makes it more real. It makes history come alive," he said. In preparation for the trip, the Thornlea students made more than 100 wooden poppies and sold donors the right to have dedications written on the poppies. Students raised $1,200 and will be leaving the poppies on soldiers’ graves. The $1,200 will go towards taking care of soldiers’ families while the soldiers work overseas. On the cusp of his journey, Banerjee reveals how important it is to visit the famous battleground of Vimy Ridge. "I’ve often thought Vimy is one of those places every Canadian should go to once in their life."

Liberal Mary Ng claims Markham-Thornhill by 2,355 votes over Tory TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com Liberal Mary Ng, an Ottawa insider with connections to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, came through for the boss on election day winning Markham-Thornhill riding by 2.355 votes. In what turned out to be an uneventful byelection with few surprises, Ng had little trouble holding the Liberal seat left open when former MP John McCallum resigned in January to become ambassador to China. And Ng, a Toronto resident who until February worked as appointments director for Trudeau, will now be on his team as an elected MP. The 47-year-old, who had never run for office before, had little opposition in a seven-candidate field other than Conservative Ragavan Paranchothy who finished with 7,501 votes to Ng’s 9,856
votes. The other five candidates split less than 1,900 votes among them and were not a factor. Just 19,215 voted in the riding, a turnout of only 27.15 per cent in the byelection. Ng was ebullient in victory entering a jam-packed Crystal Fountain Event Venue off Kennedy Road and 14th Avenue just before 11 p.m. "So everybody, we did it, we did it," said Ng as the crowd chanted "Mary, Mary, Mary!" "I am proud to be a part of this inclusive group of individuals who remind me every day about the power of hope and hard work, Ng said. "This is a salient time where values are being challenged, values critically important to this riding, to our mosaic of communities, diversity, inclusiveness, equality... these are Liberal
values, but more importantly they are Canadian values," said Ng, taking a swipe at the Canadian-values theme of some of the current Conservative leadership candidates. "I am deeply, deeply proud to be your new member of parliament for Markham-Thornhill," she said. It was a tougher night for Conservative Paranchothy. "It’s obviously not what we hoped for" Parancothy said, adding that he joined the race late, which was a disadvantage. He was nominated March 8, he said. "I don’t think anyone was expecting a by election in this riding alongside by elections called six months ago." With Ng’s win and Liberal victories in Ottawa and Quebec along with Conservative wins in Alberta, the five byelections yielded no upsets. -- with files by Simone Joseph

The government can’t fund everything - especially expensive state-of-the-art hospital equipment close to home. That’s why the Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) is seeking the help of the community and corporate sponsors. MSH is hosting its bi-annual gala The Disco Ball at the Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites Conference Centre & Spa Friday, April 28. Proceeds from the 1970s-themed gala will go to support the hospital’s patient care fund. Through the fund, MSH plans to expand its Interventional Radiology (IR) program to provide better treatment. The IR program is one of the hospital’s most "immediate and critical needs", it says. Total cost of the expansion is $3 million, and while the hospital doesn’t expect to raise all the money in one gala, it seeks community support for the endeavour and to kick-start the fundraising effort. It’s the 26th gala hosted by MSH, its 25th gala, held in 2015, raised $700,000 for equipment in the hospital’s chemotherapy clinic. Commonly known as "surgery without scars", interventional radiology allows doctors to diagnose and treat disease with minimal invasion. This is done with the use of imaging. Interventional radiology doctors use X-ray imaging, ultrasound, CT and MRI to perform several procedures that would normally require surgical incisions. Some conditions that previously required open surgery can be treated non-surgically with IR. Patients from several departments benefit from IR, including emergency, surgery, urology, gynecology, intensive care and cancer care. Tickets cost $500 per person and guests will receive a personal tax receipt of 50 per cent the cost. All proceeds are to go to funding the IR program. The Hilton is located at 8500 Warden Ave. For more information on the gala or information on partnership and sponsorship opportunities, contact MSH director of community relations and corporate sponsorships Allan Bell on 905-472-7395 or abell@msh.on.ca

The 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles Association hosted a 100th Anniversary Mayor’s Vimy Dinner and Concert at Flato Markham Theatre. The official anniversary of Vimy Ridge, which featured four Canadian divisions fighting to take the nearly impossible ridge from German defenders and resulted in 3,600 Canadian deaths, is April 9. The four-day battle was the pivotal moment of the First World War for Canada. Canada was just 50 years old when Vimy Ridge took place and the battle cemented Canada as a na-

The 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles Association, founded by Robert McTaggart, is meant to honour the deeds of the Canadian Army in the First World War. McTaggart, whose great uncle Frederick McTaggart served and
died at Vimy Ridge, felt duty bound after visiting his uncle’s grave at Vimy Ridge a number of years ago to do something to "further honour his bravery and those soldiers with whom he fought to help shape Canadian into the envy of so many around the world." As a result, the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles Association was formed.

Nearly 70 per cent of York cops on annual Sunshine List JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
Clear out your garage and sell stuff on Tradyo.
Information released as part of the Ontario government’s annual Sunshine List reveals that 68 per cent of sworn York Regional Police officers are being paid more than $100,000 a year. Although the number of total staff on the list fell by 15, from 1,152 to 1,137 in 2016, it’s still an increase of more than 20 per cent from 2014 when the number was 898. A number of recent senior officer retirements has resulted in the service announcing it will be hiring 100 officers in the near future. The top two earners were police Chief Eric Jolliffe, who earned $272,696, and Deputy Chief Thomas Carrique who received $230,974. Apart from police, the document lists a number of individuals whose salaries
far exceed the average Ontarian’s annual salary - approximately $50,000 according to Statistics Canada - including former Stouffville CAO, Marc Pourhavidi, who earned $447,289, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, who received $187,881, and Mackenzie Health president and CEO, Altaf Stationwala who was paid $515,411. In the case of the uniformed officers he represents, Todd Sepkowski, president of the York Regional Police Association, said it’s impossible to compare the police to others when it comes to salaries considering the nature of their work. "I don’t think it’s fair to take a large organization like us - a specialized workforce - and compare us to other organizations," he said. "Policing isn’t like those jobs because we’re asked to do very specialized
jobs. Policing isn’t a 9-to-5 job, we work Christmas, Easter; I can’t tell you how many birthdays and special events I’ve had to cancel. "I think our salary is a fair representation of what we do." Furthermore, police officers often live in the communities where they work, supporting local economies and communities where they volunteer, he added. "We plow our money back into the community," he said. "On average, municipal costs like transportation and garbage collection and recreation are higher than net police costs." Ontario representative at the Canadian Tax Federation, Christine Van Geyn, said Ontarians who earn about $950 a week are "rubbed the wrong way" whenever they see figures like this.
