A Markham councillor is throwing his support behind the StopTheKnocks campaign and wants the city to take stronger action against door-to-door scams.

During this week’s general committee meeting, Colin Campbell pushed forward a motion calling for a provincewide band on door-to-door sales in the home services sector, such as water heaters, water filtration systems and furnaces.

“These people are forcing their way into homes with fake IDs,” he said. “We need protection for seniors and newcomers. Let’s show some action for once.”

“The province only half addressed the issue,” he said.

Some of the new rules included significant restrictions on how door-to-door sellers are to approach the door, present ID, and close sales at a person’s home.

But some companies continue to mislead the public using fake IDs, fear tactics and contracts with severe cancellation fees, he said.

the traditional forward red blocks that will make the course play to just over 4,000 yards.

Kim said that was introduced to make it more attractive for novice, junior and women golfers.

Noting that golfers these days experience time constraints when playing a full round, Kim said the North Course will also introduce a rate to play 12 holes.

“There’s a lot of people who don’t have the time to be on the course for 5 1/2 hours to play 18 holes or those who feel that playing nine holes is a little too fast,” he said. “With 12 holes of golf it serves as a median and it definitely makes for quicker golf.”

They’ve also introduced a new family rate for the North Course.

After 6 p.m., a youngster can golf for free when accompanied by a full paying parent.

For paying adults, the package including a kart is $60.

“There’s very few people who would come at 6 p.m. or later to play due to the full rates that we had,” Kim noted. “Now for a parent and youngster, that’s $30 per person to play.

“Where else can you get that?”

Along with instituting changes on their North Course, Angus Glen has bolstered their instruction segment with the addition of The Golf Lab. Citing the Angus Glen Golf Club’s Academy has close to 350 participants, which includes adults and youngsters some of whom are high performance students, Kim said the biggest challenge they faced going forward was in trying to improve their level of instruction.

To do so, they brought on Liam Mucklow, The Golf Lab founder who has also won a number of coach of the year awards, to assist in conducting full in-training sessions with their staff of instructors.

“We want to keep our instruction level up to date,” Kim said. “We want to get our instructors to be the best in the industry.”

Along with Mucklow’s presence, the academy will have access to some new technology, including a launch monitor.

Scott Haynes noted prior to last weekend he had plenty of time to come and go from his house as he pleased.

But from now until sometime in November that won’t be the case.

Especially after Markham Green Golf Club opened its nine-hole, par 35 course that was once part of the old IBM Golf Club last Friday for the start of another season.

As manager of Markham Green Golf Club, Haynes said it’s a case of getting back to serving the golfing public, which has been itching to get back on the fairways and greens after waiting for Old Man Winter to make his annual retreat for another year.

For a time when Mother Nature teased everyone with above-normal temperatures in mid-March, Haynes thought they might have an early opening by March 18.

“The phones were ringing like crazy” Reality set in when cold weather, snow, high winds and rain invaded the area just after their tentative opening date earlier in the month, and forced a rescheduling.

“The phones were ringing like crazy over the last four weekends.

We were getting around 50 calls a day asking when we were going to open,” Haynes said prior to Friday’s official opening.

As for how the course survived winter’s wrath, he said it took winter’s best punch.

About the only thing the course presently needs is some added sunshine and warm days to return the fairways and greens to its seasonal green texture.

While the course remained unchanged from a year ago, Haynes said one major addition over the fall and winter was the installation of a new irrigation system that replaced the existing one that was installed in the mid-1970s.

“It’s a new system that works on the entire course,” he said.

One public course that did open earlier was Remington Parkview Golf and Country Club.

Rob McGarrigle, Remington Parkview event co-ordinator, noted they opened their 18-hole Upper and Valley Courses three days starting March 30.

But when winter made a return shortly after, the course closed its doors for business during the next two weeks before re-opening April 11 with players allowed to use electric karts if they wanted starting last Friday.

“The courses wintered great.

Both courses are now bone dry and all greens are in play,” he said.

Noting they made no physical changes to either course, McGarrigle noted the one major addition that players might notice is on the greens.

This was in large part when the golf club purchased four modern

machines at a total cost of over $100,000 in terms of mowers and rollers for their greens.

“These should make the greens more consistent and faster for both courses,” he said.

In an effort to entice more senior players to hit the links, the club also created a Monday to Friday senior rate of $39 to walk the course.

With Bushwood Golf Club opening their 18-hole, par 72 Championship Course measuring some 6,500 yards last Saturday, club owner Mary Evelyn said it was a case of playing the waiting game during the unpredictable weather conditions that came in early April.

“It was a frustrating spring,” she noted.

If there was one good thing, the milder than normal winter did not wreak any havoc on their course.

While there were no physical changes made to the course, Evelyn

said they did some work in rebuilding sand traps last fall.

Golfers setting their sights on playing Angus Glen Golf Club, which opened its original 18-hole, par 72 South Course that played host to the 2015 Pan American Games golf event and 2002 Canadian Open Friday, will notice some changes when they open their 18-hole North Course scheduled for the first weekend in May. The most noticeable was some work that was carried out in reshaping all of their green side bunkers and installation of a new drainage system, cited Terry Kim, Angus Glen Golf Club head professional.

“We are waiting for the sod to set around the new and improved green side bunkers and we are keeping our fingers crossed for the first weekend of May,” he said.

City takes idea for a spin

Move over, pedestrians. It might be time to share the sidewalk.

Instead of building new bike lanes adjacent to busy streets, Markham wants to look at allowing cyclists on underused sidewalks that run along major roads.

This was an issue Markham’s Cycling and Pedestrian Advisory Committee proposed last year, but there was no movement on it.

That is until this month when Mayor Frank Scarpitti urged city staff to look at the issue again.

“The sidewalk system is one of the most underutilized pieces of infrastructure we have,” he said during a recent development services committee meeting.

“Warden (Avenue) is a busy street. But you don’t see volumes of people on the sidewalk.

We have kilometres upon kilometres of sidewalks sitting empty.”

Cycling on roads with cars: Fast facts: • 129 – cycling fatalities between 2006 and 2010 according to the latest Ontario Chief Coroner’s cycling death review; • 51% – of cycling fatalities occurred in persons 45-years-old and older, 15 per cent occurred in those 19-years-old and under and 6% were children under the age of 14; • 41 – cycling fatalities occurred in 2006 compared to 14 in 2009 and 25 in 2010; • 74%– of cycling fatalities occurred in the spring and summer months; • 53% – of cycling fatalities occurred in daylight conditions • 63% – of cycling fatalities occurred during recreational activities compared to 31% during commuting. The balance were due to sport cycling activities in groups or solo rides.

Currently, Markham has a bylaw prohibiting bikes with wheels larger than 24 inches on sidewalks. That’s about the size of a junior mountain bike wheel.

Other municipalities such as Aurora, King, Richmond Hill and Vaughan all allow cycling on sidewalks to some degree.

The move would help boost cycling culture and create an added layer of safety, argued Peter Miasek of the city’s cycling committee.

“Not a lot of cyclists feel comfortable on busy streets riding with traffic,” said the Unionville resident.

According to York Regional Police, 23 people were killed in a fatal motor vehicle collision in 2015, of which three were cyclists.

Cycling on sidewalks would be a way to get more residents out of their cars, he added, especially for those short trips to buy groceries or even to a bus stop or GO Train station.

There are several options on the table, using the sidewalk along major roads as is or adding a multi-use path strip adjacent to the sidewalk.

Adding a strip of pathway along the boulevard is the preferred option, Miasek said, but he’s aware there aren’t infinite funds to retro-fit sidewalks.

There is also a push to include this concept as part of new road designs and road widening projects.

But permitting cyclists on sidewalks is about more than changing a city bylaw, warned Ontario Safety League president Brian Patterson. It’s a culture shift.

Ongoing communication, cycling and pedestrian education and proper and frequent signage could help mitigate issues between cyclists and pedestrians.

“You can’t just do it once or put up a sign and think the community is vaccinated,” Patterson said of Markham’s plan. “There will be confusion and it will be awkward. “Do you ride on this side or that side of the sidewalk?

As part of the Box Grove Community development, Copper Creek Drive, from Rizal Avenue to Bernbridge Road, will be closed to traffic for a three-week period to facilitate safe and efficient installation of water and sewer connections. Traffic control signs and detour routes will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians.

During construction, access to local residences and businesses within the construction area will be open. Emergency services have been advised of the proposed construction activity, and access by emergency services (Police, Fire, and Ambulance), postal delivery, and waste collection will remain unaffected during this time. Ontario’s bike friendly dream

Drivers need refresher courses

Re: What will it take to stop scourge on our roads?, column by Marney Beck, April 14.

I agree with this column [on drinking and driving] and I, too, have my stories.

But to cut to the chase, in my opinion, we need regulations that require us all to answer questions about road rules, regulations, handling of a car, how one drives under this and that condition — all before we are allowed to renew our driver’s licence.

So many professions require consistent upgrading of skills, why not driving?

One other idea is if a citizen needs to go back and take a refresher course, these courses should be run after work i.e. 6 to 9 p.m. during a work week or on a Saturday or Sunday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

I wonder if these ideas

Stronger penalities needed

he province says it will spend $25 million over two years to make Ontario a more bicycle friendly place, establishing more bike lanes and making roads safer for riders.

Will it make a difference? If you’re not a regular bicycle rider now, might you ever become one?

I’m not so sure. Even though it would be a great thing if it did happen, making us more fit and eco friendly, I wonder if we will ever change.

When I was a kid, I used to ride my bike everywhere.

As soon as the weather would allow it, I’d ride my bike to school.

I’d ride my bike delivering newspapers. I rode my bike to the corner store on errands when my mom said we needed milk or bread. I rode my bike to my baseball games, cleats on the pedals, glove on the seat under me.

I rode my bike around the block with the other neighbourhood kids when we had “nothing to do”.

A bike took such a beating that if you left it near the curb on garbage day, someone might mistake it for having been thrown out.

We loved our bikes because, when it was not bicycle season, we had to walk.

A ride to school? Are you ill?

Broken leg? We trudged through the snow and longed for better weather to get out our bikes again.

Despite that great start in the world of cycling, strangely, as soon as we were old enough to drive, we typically abandoned bike riding. All we wanted was to drive our parents’ cars or, once we could afford it, our own.

Cycling was kids’ stuff.

I have to say we’ve come a long way from that time.

All across York’s more rural roads you see people — adults — riding bikes for exercise, or competition, their colourful and tightfitting outfits hard to miss.

It looks like a great way to get outdoors, stay fit and enjoy some camaraderie.

Meanwhile today’s bikes are incredible. Walk into a modern bike shop and check out what’s available. Well made, reliable, they can easily serve as a mode of daily transportation.

Bernie O’Neill Yet we still don’t see many people, except in downtown Toronto, using a bike as a basic mode of transport.

True, things are more spread out for most of us. Few of us hit the jackpot where our workplace is a reasonable bike ride away from our home.

There is the weather. Southern Ontario has some of the most variable weather in the country.

Often humid.Sunny in the morning, rainy in the afternoon, or viceversa. Makes showing up at work in presentable shape, or getting home without getting drenched, a challenge.

But to me? It’s the safety issue that makes me nervous and makes me nervous about my kids being on their bikes.

I grew up when people didn’t drive like they seem to drive today.

Fewer cars. Life was less rushed.

People driving a car were actually looking at the road.

Most of our designated bike lanes are just markings on the edge of streets on which traffic is roaring by. An imaginary line. I don’t know why we even bother.

I’ve seen places like downtown Montreal where the bike lane is actually a lane. They have taken space away from the cars and put up two-foot tall concrete barriers between where the bikes go and where the cars go.

Cyclists are everywhere thanks to these actions. Will we ever do that in Ontario, where the car is king, carmakers are big employers, and we all race everywhere in our SUVs, including driving our kids everywhere?

Sometimes action needs to be bolder or why waste the $25 million? I’d say spend it on 100,000 “free” bikes for needy kids, if I was sure they had a safe place to ride.

Or don’t spend it at all.

This column about drinking and driving and the latest tragedy shows the current system is not working.

It is long overdue for our politicians to change the law, if they have the courage.

A person must be forced to make the decision whether to drink and drive, BEFORE taking the first drink.

Afterward they are mentally impaired, and cannot make a serious decision.

The dangers of drinking and driving are being advertised now through many service ads from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving).

Unfortunately, people still

drink and drive, thinking, “I will only have one or two. I can handle it”.

The problem is, the real consequences only happen after an accident happens.

This is too late! People are maimed and killed.

The consequence must be changed so if a person is caught drinking and driving, they lose their licence for six months, not seven days (seven days is a joke).

The second occurrence, they should lose it for one year; the third occurrence they lose it for five years. This would cause people to think before they start drinking.

The law must be changed so people know the consequence to them before climbing in their car.

That is the time to make the decision, knowing if they are caught there will be a severe consequence.

Perhaps MADD could press for this.

Markham has declared itself “a monarch friendly city”, saying it is the first city in Canada to make the declaration.

The butterfly-friendly policy includes planting butterfly-friendly habitats such as milkweed and other nectar producing plants on city properties in parks and along naturalized areas, as well as adding signage in parks and greenspaces and educating residents on the benefits of planting such pollinator plants.

The city’s backyard garden program will also include information about plants that attract butterflies and bees.

Said Mayor Frank Scarpitti: “Markham has an important role to play in educating the public and supporting monarch habitats in our parks, community gardens, natural spaces, municipal facilities and public lands.”

The monarch friendly proclamations started in the United States several years ago with about a dozen cities joining the monarch friendly movement.

The city also partnered with the David Monarch designation a Suzuki Foundation first for Canada, city says. to establish butterfly research pods at Milne Dam Conservation Park.

About 20 years ago, it is estimated more than 1 billion monarchs made the 8,000-km migration from Mexico to southern Canada.

Population decline Three years ago, that number dropped to about 35 million, said Jode Rogers, manager of the David Suzuki Foundation’s #gotmilkweed and Monarch Manifesto campaigns.

“These are cool critters,” he said. “They are weird and wonderful. They are the flagship of pollinators.”

The decline in numbers can be attributed to two major events: loss of habitat and wacky weather.

Butterfly survival depends on milkweed plants, where butterflies lay their eggs. The plants then become the main source of food and habitat for caterpillars.

Milkweed has a bad rap, “a branding issue,” Rogers said. The David Suzuki Foundation started the #gotmilkweed campaign in 2014, where it sold 5,000 milkweed plants and pushed the provincial government to remove milkweed from the noxious plants list.

The campaign also encouraged nurseries and garden centres to sell milkweed.

“By planting milkweed in your backyards and front yards, you are exponentially helping to bring the monarchs back,” Rogers said.

Milkweed is a hardy and quick to establish plant, making it an easy choice for residents.

Markham residents will soon be able to get milkweed seeds through the city’s seed library.

Not only is milkweed a great plant for home gardens, it is also great to plant in ‘empty’ spaces, such as hydro or rail corridors, Rogers said.

These corridors provide large open spaces for milkweed and other wildflowers that require plenty of sun — great habitat for pollinators.

That’s the focus of the butterfly research pods at Milne Dam Conservation Park, Rogers said.

The two-year study, in conjunction with the University of Guelph, will look at best practices for these open, flat spaces, including when to plant and how to maintain. Markham is also working on a bee strategy.

Chocolate is a fairly easy theme for us, given how much we do that is chocolate and how big our bills are for this precious ingredient. One thing for sure, I couldn't imagine a world in which chocolate couldn't loom large!

The body of missing Markham woman, Sandy Luong, was found in a Toronto park.

York Regional Police reported a body was found by a pedestrian in G. Ross Lord Park — located south of the Steeles Avenue and Bathurst Street intersection in Toronto — at just after 5:20 p.m. Saturday evening.

It was confirmed to be Luong, age 23.

Police say the death is not considered suspicious and the family is asking for privacy.

Luong was last seen alive while walking away from her residence in the Helen Avenue and Kennedy Road area of Markham Tuesday afternoon.

A key issue is right of way between a cyclist, a mother pushing a stroller and a person with mobility issues, he added.

“Sidewalks were designed for pedestrians,” said Patterson. “You have discourteous drivers on the road and now you’re inviting discourteous cyclists on sidewalks.”

Speed is another concern, especially when it comes to cyclist-pedestrian collisions.

Other issues include driveway entrances along a route that could pose potential sightline issues for turning cars and sidewalk patios such as those along Main Street Markham and Main Street Unionville.

Those are the types of issues expected to be addressed in a city staff report, Miasek added.

So far, the only allowance for cycling on sidewalks would be along roads where the speed is more than 50 km/hr.

Top-speed cyclists — those who cycle for sport or those who commute via bike — would most likely prefer to cycle on the road, Miasek said.

The issue becomes more complicated when the region is in the mix. While the region may own the road, such as Warden Avenue or Kennedy Road, municipalities are responsible for the sidewalk, said the region’s director of infrastructure management in transportation services Stephen Collins.

The challenge, from the region’s perspective, is how cyclists would approach and cross the intersection, Collins said.

“Crosswalks are designed with walking in mind,” he said.

“Adding a cyclist on the sidewalk would change the dynamic.”

Another obstacle could be cycling on sidewalks where there is a large number of transit stops, such as Yonge or Leslie streets.

“You have discourteous drivers on the road and now you’re inviting discourteous cyclists on sidewalks.”

The region is taking a similar approach along the new stretch of Hwy. 7 east of Town Centre Boulevard in Markham, where there will be a cycle track behind the curb, buffered by planters and up on the boulevard. Then, beyond the cycle track, there is a sidewalk.

There is a dedicated, on-road cycle lane along Hwy. 7 west of Town Centre Boulevard, While there is a market for on-road bike lanes for those experienced cyclists, that is not the majority, Collins added.

“We heard loud and clear, general cyclists — those who buy their groceries or who bike to work occasionally — prefer to ride on a boulevard than on a street,” he said.

“What’s important is it is a different space than the sidewalk space.”

“Everyone of those so-called protection measures the province introduced a year ago were broken by the fraudster that came to our door,” Rudik said.

The petition calls on the province to take immediate action to ban door-to-door sales this spring.

Mississauga Councillor Karen Ras is also pushing the motion.

But imposing a ban might not be that simple, since many legitimate companies do door-to-door canvassing, Markham Regional Councillor Jim Jones said.

He noted there was no warning or official notice of Campbell’s motion provided to councillors and the public.

“That’s the way many businesses market themselves,” Jones said. “Taking away their livelihood deserves a discussion.”

Rather than an outright ban of door-to-door solicitors, it might be more effective to work on an awareness and education campaign, Jones said.

“We should be highlighting these scams and educating the public,” said Jones, who noted he was on the receiving end of a Canada Revenue Agency phone call scam.

“We should ban everything,” he said tongue in cheek. “Ban calls on your door, ban calls on the phone.”

Mayor Frank Scarpitti agreed, adding a municipal bylaw is not the appropriate action.

“You can’t stop people knocking on doors,” he said.

“We should have a bylaw stopping people from opening their doors,” he said. “Opening the door is what makes you vulnerable.”

More education on how to protect yourself at the door would be more beneficial, he added.

“If you didn’t call them, don’t let them in,” Scarpitti said. “Usually if there is something wrong with your furnace, you call them and you know they are coming.”

Council wants to hear more from York Regional Police on some of the safety concerns, as well as how homeowners can better protect themselves.

The motion in Markham was deferred to the next general committee meeting in the coming weeks.

Participation House, Markham will be holding its FashionAble Gala on May 3.

This inaugural charity fundraiser’s goal is to raise $75,000 to purchase a fully accessible van for Participation House’s residents and clients.

As a registered charity located in Markham for the past 43 years, Participation House is pleased to be holding its event in Markham at the Markham Hilton Suites, according to executive director Frances DiCarlo.

FashionAble will feature a reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and a fashion show at 8:15 p.m.

The evening will feature a diverse array

of entertainment, fashion designers and retail stores, in addition to a silent auction and an impressive raffle with prizes worth more than $7,800, plus the chance to win a diamond necklace.

The theme of “FashionAble” is a celebration of accessibility, the dawn of the spring weather and a celebration of Mother’s Day to come.

Radio host Rosie Ferguson is the evening’s emcee.

At seven different sites in York Region, Participation House serves 114 men and women ranging in age from 20 to 86. Its mission is to be a leader in enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities

through a continuum of services designed to reflect individualized approaches, community involvement and a respect for human dignity.

Road work will be taking place across York Region this year, according to a presentation

by Salim Alibhai, the region’s director of capital planning and delivery in the transportation services department.

The presentation only dealt with regional projects and did not include any construction also taking place on local roads or provincial highways.

Commuters better brace themselves for a whole lot of traffic woes, regional councillors warned.

“We’re going to be under construction this year, the whole of York Region,” Markham Regional Councillor and Deputy Mayor Jack Heath said.

The region is investing $2.4 billion on capital road, transit, bridges and intersection projects over 10 years to address the transportation needs of the growing region, transportation commissioner Daniel Kostopoulos said. “Transportation continues to be the top issue for our residents and this council has shown a lot of leadership and support in approving more funding for transportation capital improvements and capacity increases in the network than in any other term of council,” he said.

Of the 10-year $2.4 billion transportation capital budget, the region is spending $700 million on transit buses, garages and terminals, not including funding spent on bus rapidways on Yonge Street, Davis Drive and Hwy. 7, Alibhai said.

The other $1.7 billion is earmarked for roads, bridges, intersections, illumination, maintenance yards and technology.

This year, the region will invest $112 million in new roads to accommodate the region’s growth, Alibhai said.

The costs of the projects are spread over several years. About $27.6 million will be spent this year on keeping existing roads in a state of good repair: $18.5 million on road rehabilitation and preservation, $3.7 million on bridge and culvert rehabilitation and $5.4 million on intersection improvements.

Readership of weekly community newspapers in Ontario is very strong, according to the Community Newspaper Readership Report released

by BrandSpark International. The report, conducted in partnership with Metroland Media, found that 73 per cent of Ontarians surveyed have read at least one of the last four issues of their Metroland Media community newspaper.

That rate is 83 per cent for the papers in Metroland’s York Region – the Aurora Banner, Bradford West Gwillimbury Topic, East Gwillimbury Express, Georgina Advocate, King Connection, Markham Economist & Sun, Newmarket Era, Richmond Hill/ Thornhill Liberal, Stouffville SunTribune and Vaughan Citizen.

Most notably, just under nine in 10 (87 per cent) younger adults surveyed between the ages of 18 and 35 are reading their community newspaper as much or more often this year than last year. That number jumps to 92 per cent for all adults surveyed.

“I think it’s fair to say that we were surprised at the strength of community newspapers in light of how print in general is perceived,” said Mark Baltazar, vice-president and partner at BrandSpark International. “These findings reinforce how much local information matters to Ontarians.

Community newspapers are playing a major role in the lives of the people we studied, keeping them connected to what’s going on in their own backyards.”

Compared to last year, 13 per cent of the people surveyed indicate they are reading Metroland newspapers more often, while almost 80 per cent have not changed their readership habits. Only 6 per cent of the people indicate they are reading it less.

“This news certainly reinforces the feedback that we’ve heard from our readers across the province,” said Michelle Digulla, vice-president of marketing at Metroland Media. “There is a strong appetite for the community-level, hyper-local news that community newspapers, in print and online, are uniquely set up to deliver.”

More than 13,000 adults across Ontario were surveyed online and by phone for the study, which was completed from Nov. 24 to Jan. 31.

The study focused on readership for the more than 100 local websites and community newspapers (including flyers) published across Ontario by Metroland Media. The margin of error is plus or minus 0.94 per cent.

Bring the indoors out: Interior inspired deck and patio areas are becoming increasingly popular, and there are easy ways to effortlessly achieve this look. “Start by adding indoor touches to the outside, such as a brass-finished accent table, portable lantern or a water-resistant bar cart. Consider adding an outdoor ottoman to store some blankets in for those cooler evenings,” suggests Grech.

Get creative with your stain: Try a two-tone effect with stain – using one colour on the deck and another on the railings or on two different levels of the deck for a sophisticated look. A natural, lighter stain works well on the deck, while a darker more solid stain will enhance architectural features of the railing.

Try a different finish: When it comes to staining, selecting the right product and finish is crucial for optimal results. A premium exterior stain will protect your surface and enrich the grain of wood surfaces. “Try out the different colours and translucencies of stain to ensure you get the perfect finish for your wood,” explains Grech. Many products are

available in pint sample cans, so you can try them out before buying gallons. For new wood, try a translucent finish; for older wood or a patch job, try a solid stain for a refreshed look.

Grech suggests Arborcoat from Benjamin Moore, which is available in an array of colours and finishes.

Don’t forget about the furniture: Furniture is the perfect medium to express creativity and infuse some colour outdoors. “When painting a Muskoka chair or an old outdoor table, don’t be afraid to take some risks with colour. These surfaces can be easily repainted to suit your changing design taste, so don’t be afraid to add some colour,” shares Grech.

“This year I’m recommending Patriot Blue 2064-20 and Royal Flush 2076-20 to add bold strokes to your outdoor furniture.”

Looking to grow the perfect lawn this summer? The expert opinion: Don’t let your lawn hit the snooze button.

“Starting work too soon can be harmful to your lawn, but so can waiting too long,” cautions John Ladds, the operations manager at Weed Man Canada. “Assuming that all traces of snow and standing water are gone, a little spring cleaning can help your lawn thrive the rest of the year.”

As spring temperatures rise and excess moisture evaporates, a thorough raking can do wonders to stimulate growth and root development in your lawn by increasing airflow. Ladds adds that you can give it a further boost by having your lawn aerated.

“Soil can compact over the winter and professional services such as mechanical core aeration can significantly help with the penetration of water and nutrients.”

Having a nutrition plan in place is essential. He advises application of a high quality, slow release fertilizer that won’t start releasing nutrients until the grass has begun greening naturally on its own.

“The best fertilizers release their nutrients slowly and over a long period,” adds Ladds. “Dead grass patches should be over-seeded to establish thick and healthy turf, preventing weeds from infesting these areas as temperatures warm up.”

Perhaps most importantly, and well in advance of any work, Ladds recommends testing equipment to ensure everything is in good working order. Examine hoses and sprinklers for leaks, and make sure mower blades are optimized, not just for sharpness, but for proper height also. “Checking your tools sooner rather than later means getting your lawn growing as soon as it’s ready.”

When students and teachers from Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy set out running Wednesday afternoon, it was not part of a phys-ed class.

While the run helped with each participant’s physical and mental well being, it served an even bigger purpose as a collective effort to assist others in dire need.

The school’s inaugural Colour Me Magic 5K run featured more than 30 teams of anywhere from two to six participants per entry pounding the pavement.

The run raised close to $2,500 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

For a first-time venture, it turned out to be a success, noted Maria Ortiz and Michael D’Ambrosi, copresidents of the Father Michael McGivney student athletic council.

In previous years, the student athletic council organized an event to raise funds for children diagnosed with cancer. This year, the council decided to reach out to all children battling illnesses through the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“Through research and hearing the stories of children supported, we felt compelled to take advantage of our truly hard-working council to improve the opportunities of the children by hosting the event,” the pair noted.

As a means of injecting further interest and encourage as many students as possible to participate, the athletic council added some flair.

That was apparent as participants were doused with coloured powder on their apparel and in some cases, on their faces, by fellow students.

Thus came the title of the race — Colour Me Magic.

“We really wanted to host an event that was engaging, exciting and guaranteed to generate school spirit like never before,” they said. “Our former athletic council vice-president, Megan Aquino, introduced the concept of a colour run, and we strongly believed that it would be a great fit for our students. We researched the costs of coloured powder, and decided to create our own to maximize the donation value.”

The students said their event would not have been possible were it not for the support they received from the school’s faculty along with a variety of sponsors who stepped up by donating prizes.

“The teachers always made time and were willing to provide input, guaranteeing our ambitions and goals would be fulfilled.”

omolo (Romy Fontana threw his heart and soul into everything he did, whether it was his business, his volunteer work or his many hobbies.

“He loved life,” his widow, Rose Fontana, said. “There was no sitting on the couch, watching TV. That was not his thing.”

Fontana was born in Veroli, Italy on April 14, 1935.

He immigrated to Canada in 1954 to join his first wife who was pregnant with their daughter, Michelina.

Fontana worked in construction and juggled two other jobs to make ends meet.

By age 22, he’d scraped together enough money to buy his first house.

Trained as a welder in Italy, he eventually landed in the steel industry working on apartment buildings as well as large industrial and commercial projects.

Fontana rose through the ranks,

eventually being promoted to supervisor then foreman.

In 1968, he founded his own company, Romy Ornamental Steel, and grew it into a highly successful business.

Wanting a less stressful occupation, Fontana sold the firm in the late 1970s and obtained his real estate licence.

Along the way, he and his first wife had two more children, Georgio and Romy Jr. But, by the mid1980s, they divorced.

Fontana continued to enjoy success working for a Toronto real estate firm where he garnered top honours five years straight.

alongside Rose until his death last September.

“We did pretty well everything, 90 per cent of our things together – working, living. We were very close in that sense,” said Rose, who married Fontana during small ceremony in 2000.

Shortly after moving to Vaughan, Fontana joined the Maple Lions Club where he became actively involved in several initiatives including the Turkey Shoot and the annual pancake festival.

When the farm that hosted the Turkey Shoot was sold for development, Fontana convinced the city to allow the club to relocate the event to the Keele Valley dumpsite.

“He kept it going. He brought out all his friends and we did very well with that (fundraiser),” said Fred Cook, a longtime friend and fellow Lion.

And when the Lions Club lost its meeting space, Fontana persuaded city hall to let the group take over the former library building on Merino Road, which was going to be bulldozed and the land sold for development, Cook said.

A natural leader, Fontana served as president of the Lions Club for two years, from 1997 to 1999.

During his tenure, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Fontana organized a huge gala celebration at Le Parc Banquet Hall attended by several local dignitaries.

“When he became president of the club, the club grew. It was a friendly place and we all had fun,” Cook said.

Fontana also played a pivotal role in the creation of Maple Lions Park. He designed and helped construct the steel arch gateway to Cunningham Drive park.

For his dedication and many contributions, Fontana was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest honour bestowed by Lions Clubs International, in 2009.

“He was just an outgoing type of guy and I don’t think there was a problem he couldn’t solve, really,” Cook said.

He deeply loved his children and three grandchildren. Sadly, his time with them ended Sept. 3, 2015 when he died of heart failure at age 80.

Dojo team strong at Niagara district karate championships

Students representing the NOX Dojo elite team made their presence felt at the Niagara District AAU Karate Championships in Syracuse, N.Y., last weekend.

As the lone Canadian entry in the event that saw schools from New York and New Jersey in attendance, the NOX Dojo elite team sent 11 members and each fielded medals in their respective competitive divisions.

They include: Bob Lindbolm (gold kata, gold kumite), Rikizo Tamaki (silver kata, gold kumite), Misuzu Tamaki (bronze kata, gold kumite), Nolan Chong (bronze kata, silver kumite), Ryan Koo (gold kata, bronze kumite), Ryan Williams (gold kata, gold kumite), Ethan Co (gold kata, silver kumite), Jayda Shetty (silver kata, silver kumite), Tiana Shetty (gold kata, gold kumite), and Michael Barrasso (gold kata, gold kumite).

Also competing in the event was sensei Sean Wong, who won gold in kata.

All team members qualified to participate at the AAU Karate National Championships which are to be held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in July.

SPORTS Silver Knights novice boys win Ontario Cup silver

The York South Silver Knights novice boys accomplished quite a bit as a first-year rep basketball team after they advanced to the Ontario Cup division five final before settling for the silver medal in a 40-30 loss to the Durham City Bulldogs West in London last weekend.

The Silver Knights reached the final after reeling off victories over the Markham Unionville Minor Basketball Association 24-20, the Mississauga Jaguars 38-36 and Etobicoke Thunder 33-30.

Despite falling just short of the gold medal, Silver Knights’ head coach Mark Malcolm was pleased with the progress his under-10 entry made this season.

That included earning a silver medal from a tournament in Barrie and bronze at the Blessed Sacrament Tournament in Hamilton.

The wins in large part were due

to their commitment and willingness to enhance and acquire new skills on and off the court.

“The group is new to the game, first year rep basketball and their success is due to new coaching and weekly development training and out of the regional organizations like Galaxy Training, a program that also focuses on the development of young youth,” Malcolm said.

Other team members included Manger Sorim, Cody Tsai, Edmoun Wartan, Tyler Lum, Giuseppe Carelli, Christopher Lee, Tyler Liu, Kalaun Malcolm, Jordan Schotte, Anthony Popescu, Darien Kasha, Zidane Burgess and Armaan Bardai.

Girls are in sync at Hilton invitational in Etobicoke The Markham Synchro Club sent four teams to the fifth annual Hilton Worldwide Synchronized Swimming Invitational and came away with top 10 placings in each age group competition at the Etobicoke Olympium pool last weekend. The highest result was recorded by the 12-year-old team, which finished third.

Coached by Kim Beveridge and Emily Post, team members includ-

ed: Analisa Nguyen, Dayna Seppanen, Trinity-Jade Tanuan, Sofia Castillo, Alexandria Teng and Emily Xu. The club also fielded two fourthplace results.

One came from the 10-year-old team coached by Amanda Jackson and team members that included: Kennedy Chen, Jaden Chiang, Emma Diloreto, Sabine Keon, Deira McTavish and Annika Jiang.

The other was the 15-year-old team, coached by Heather Beveridge along with swimmers Amparo Abascal Vedoya, Maia DeKort, Madison Gusciglio, Jaeden Walz, Alystra Riddle and Viviana Santa.

In duet competition, the 10-and under pair of Chiang and MacTavish were fourth.

The 13-15 pair of Deport and Walz were 10th.

In solo, Viviana Santa was fourth in the 16-20 division while Smith was 10th in the 13-15 bracket.

A total of 21 clubs and more than 900 athletes from across the province took part in the four-day event.

MUMBA major midget girls win tournament at home The Markham Unionville Minor Basketball Association major midget girls won a tournament they played host to last weekend, capturing the gold medal with a 43-35 win over the Belleville Spirits in the championship game in Markham.

Justina Chan was high scorer for MUMBA with 19 points.

MUMBA advanced to the final after winning their opening game 52-31 over Team Breakdown.

Chan led MUMBA’s offence with 15 points, while Jiyoon Choi added 14.

Facing Parry Sound in their second game, MUMBA cruised to a 41-21 win.

Vaishe Balamuraly poured in a team-high 13 points for MUMBA. Buoyed by a 12-point effort from Chan and eight from Danielle Brick, MUMBA downed the North Region Crazy Cats 51-37.

With a berth in the final on the line, MUMBA punched their ticket with a 40-13 win over the Burlington Force.

Balamuraly had a team-high 11 points for MUMBA, while Chan added 10.
