Major Mackenzie Drive and Denison Street could be the locations for two new GO Train stations in Markham. Metrolinx is in the process of finalizing GO Rail stations locations along the Stouffville GO line in preparation for all-day, two-way rail service. The transit agency has started a station review process that looks at connectivity with other transit nodes, future ridership and sur-

rounding growth. Metrolinx is investing about $13.5 billion over the next 10 years in the regional express rail project, which includes new tracks, trains, bridges, electrification and stations, as well as station upgrades.

Denison, Major Mack Increased service along the Stouffville GO line is expected to start within the next two years. The plan is to have more than 50 trains travelling between Union Station in Toronto to Unionville

station in Markham and hourly service to Lincolnville Station in Stouffville. Markham wants to see two new GO stations included in Metrolinx’s plan — one at Major Mackenzie Drive and another at Denison Street, according to a report presented at a city committee meeting on Monday. Metrolinx initially proposed a station at 14th Avenue, but city staff argued there is limited potenSee TRAIN, page 8.

Wayne’s Cup is a not-forprofit café on Hwy. 48 in Markham that employs adults with special needs. Program manager, Shelley Daffu is seen here with her son Wayne. She says her coffee shop is a little like Cheers — a place of acceptance and belonging.

Coffee shop serving up life skills BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

Sometimes a cup of coffee is more than a warm cup of java. For those working at Wayne’s Cup in Markham, ordering a cup of coffee is an exercise in social skills. The café recently opened up near Markham Road and Castlemore Avenue and features a little café in the front where customers can order coffee, muffins, sandwiches and the like.

Behind the counter is the life skills centre for adults with special needs. Everyday interactions with customers not only helps boost social and communication skills, but also

provides a level of satisfaction that is priceless, said Wayne’s Cup founder Shelley Daffu. Her son and café namesake, Wayne, 25, was born with epilepsy and is developmentally delayed. The not-for-profit café and learning centre were created with his needs in mind. “You can’t fully appreciate how much it means to be asked, ‘How’s your day?’,” she said. “You see it on their face. You can’t put a price on that.” But more than social interactions and learning life skills, Wayne’s Cup is place of acceptance. “It’s a place of belonging,” Daffu said. “It’s like Cheers. ‘Hey,

there’s Wayne’.” After graduating from Montessori school, Wayne went back to volunteer for a few years. Daffu had a hard time finding continuous education programs outside of the respite day programs. “He needs something meaningful,” said the Pickering mom. “When he’s learning, he’s happy.” And so the idea behind Wayne’s Cup was born. The half-day program that run either mornings or afternoons focuses on teaching life skills, such as learning proper hygiene, dressing, household chores, laundry and grocery shopping. And parents have the choice

between two-, three- or five-day programming. Working in the kitchen and behind the counter, taking customer orders, money management and handling cash are all part of the learning program as well. Skills such as mixing, chopping, baking also help with independence. “We want them to know how to make a snack for themselves,” Daffu said. “These are things we take for granted. We can’t underestimate what these individuals can do. Given the opportunity, they do excel.” For more information, visit waynescup.com

An Uber driver is charged with sexual assault after an incident early Tuesday morning in Markham. Shortly after midnight, a 34-yearold Markham woman was picked up by an Uber driver in the area of Yonge Street and Major Mackenzie Drive in Richmond Hill. The driver took the woman to a parking lot in the area of 16th and Woodbine avenues in Markham. The woman alleges she was then sexually assaulted. Uber Canada has been cooperative with York Regional Police investigators. The ride-sharing company released a statement soon after the allegation was made, noting it takes safety seriously. “We ... are committed to the safety of everyone who uses Uber. As soon as we became aware of the investigation, we reached out to York Regional Police to offer our assistance,” it reads. Ahmadfayim Bayat, 30, of Toronto, is charged with sexual assault. He was to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice for a bail hearing.

York police lay 150 charges in distracted driving blitz ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE Officers with York Regional Police’s traffic enforcement unit laid more than 150 charges following a twoweek distracted driving enforcement blitz. Between April 1 and April 15, police conducted a distracted driving blitz targeting motorists using handheld devices. Enforcement efforts were focused on busy intersections throughout York Region. A total of 153 charges were laid for unlawfully using a hand-held device while operating a motor vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act. While officers were enforcing Highway Traffic Act offences during this blitz, York Regional Police continue to raise awareness about the dangers and the alarming statistics associated with distracted driving. Motorists are reminded that using a hand-held device significantly increases your risk of being involved in a collision.

News, or ads disguised as media releases?

Using sidewalks as bike lanes great idea

M

ost journalists get hundreds of press releases and “advisories” every week and most aren’t relevant to the readership they serve. But some have slick or compelling headlines that just scream out to be read. “Worried work is making you sick? You’re not alone” — is a press release from a company that markets vitamins. The premise of the “news” release — and I use the term news loosely — is that if you’re taking enough of the right vitamins, you’ll feel perky and energetic and be a better worker. How about this one: “Reading glasses make some Canadians feel old, according to survey”. This news release was from one of those laser eye surgery companies, that — not surprisingly — did a survey which found that 26 per cent of Canadians feel old when they wear glasses; and 21 per cent would agree to pack on five more pounds if it meant they could discard their reading glasses. (Huh, is that even a realistic option? How did they pose that question in their survey?) Then there are the news release headlines you have to read several times to figure out what is being suggested. Try this: “Eighty-eight per cent of Canadian minimum-wage earners do not live in low-income households”. This was a serious news column about the pros and cons of raising the minimum wage, stating that because most minimum -wager earners don’t live in lowincome housing, it will do little to reduce poverty. But personally, I found the headline hard to wrap my head around. Try this disguised ad for retirement planning services from a Canadian bank: “What will you do with 2,000 hours a year when you retire?” I loved that one. I sat daydreaming looking out my office window ... let me consider that rather fun question ... hmmm, gardening, window shopping,

Marney Beck reading, walking, communicating with relatives I promise to stay in better touch with every Christmas ... the list is endless. Here’s another release from a different Canadian banking establishment: “Home ownership is a priority for millenials: poll”. Well, duh, of course it is, both my own millenials would love to own their own home, but neither is remotely close to achieving that dream. My daughter rents a rather beat-up, drafty house in rural Peel with her boyfriend and two dogs. The two of them are barely making ends meet and putting groceries on the table, never mind saving for a downpayment for a home of their own. My son just turned 24 last week, and instead of looking ahead at life with optimism, he’s worried about an artificial deadline he has imposed on himself. You see, he was hoping that by age 25, he’d have a good career and enough money to move out of his parents’ basement into an apartment or townhouse he’d rent with some friends. Unfortunately, one year away from his great “freedom 25,” he doesn’t see that as a realistic goal. But here’s this week’s fav headline: “Work email is a waste, 9 per cent of the time, execs say”. What company benefits from this survey, you ask? A staffing agency; offering six “tips” to manage your email overload. I’m betting the underlying message of the release is: everyone should hire a secretary or temp person to manage their emails. Any takers out there?

Re: Bikes on our sidewalks? City takes idea for a spin, April 21. I was thrilled to read that the City of Markham is considering permitting cyclists to ride on sidewalks. I love to cycle for exercise and pleasure, but rarely ride in Markham because I do not feel safe riding on Markham roads and there isn’t a good off-road path system for cyclists. I sometimes go for a ride in the ravine (always giving the right-of-way to pedestrians and dogs) but it can be a pain having to constantly stop/start, slow down/ speed up. My personal view is that it is a waste of money to create bike lanes on the road unless there is an actual physical divider that prevents cars from coming into the bike lane.

However, the idea of turning our sidewalks into multipurpose trails is a fantastic idea!

MARKHAM Put feet in the pedals to change views Pictured butterfly My suggestion? Anyone not a monarch

(city council, city staff, etc.) involved in influencing or drafting bylaws concerning bicycles should ride a bike for commuting, shopping, all day at least one day during the work week. If this group regularly rode bikes to and from work, we would have safe cycling routes (and greatly increased bike usage) all over Markham in record time. This is simply because when you spend any amount of time cycling around Markham, you will see opportunities everywhere to inexpensively

Re: Markham declared ‘Monarch friendly’, April 21. The monarch story in the April 21 Economist is a great story, and the idea to plant monarch friendly plants like milkweed is well worth the effort to help the monarchs. Just a note that the cover picture is a monarch, but the butterfly photo on page 7 is actually a viceroy. Easy to get them confused, as they do look quite similar. Excellent story, regardless.

This week our culinary adventure takes us to Mexico, and we’re going to be there while they celebrate Cinco de Mayo, a day similar to Canada Day for us. I have been to Mexico but once and that was to visit Cabo San Lucas to play some really amazing golf courses. A few recollections are: a) I saw no restaurants that had a roof b) swim-up bars aren’t so good during happy hour c) there are snakes lurking in the bushes just off the fairways, and d) margaritas sneak up on you!

While I was at the hockey rink last week, the big chef from our golf course (who's a hockey fan as well) allowed in conversation that he had run out of avocados for the menu and he had bought some from us. "Are they ever big, and you get lots We have put our collective brains together to assemble all things Mexican more out of them than we usually do" was his comment. This squares and delicious, and there seems to be no shortage, so here goes... with what I hear a lot…" You might pay a little extra at the V.G., but you get what you pay for." little more than a kilometer away, the area is poised for urban expansion and rapid transit, the report notes. A station at Hwy. 7 is not recommended since it is about 500 metres from the existing Unionville GO Station near Enterprise Boulevard and Kennedy Road. There also would be significant costs associated with acquiring surrounding properties along Hwy. 7 to make room for a station. A final report listing new station locations and existing station upgrades is expected in the coming months.

York Regional Police hosted motorcycle safety event in Newmarket last week.

York police preach motorcycle safety By Tim Kelly

tkelly@yrmg.com

With motorcycle season upon us, York Regional Police officers revved their engines and got in a little spring training in Newmarket last Wednesday. The 21-member motorcycle unit, headed up by Staff Sgt. Dave Mitchell, head of the traffic enforcement unit, needed to get the winter rust off with some slow-speed drills around traffic cones. “Right now they’re rehearsing,” Mitchell said as he watched several officers ride the 842-pound 1800cc Harley Davidsons. “They have to make sure they still have those skills, that muscle memory.” It’s training he strongly advises all motorcycle riders do each spring before they hit the road. “I don’t care how good you think you are, you need to practise. You need to check your attitude and ego at the door. You’re a vulnerable road user and there are no re-dos,” he said about the prospect of collisions with cars. Asked about what he thinks are the most common mistakes motorcycle riders make, the 48-yearold, who has been riding police motorcycles for 26 years, said: “high speeds and the attitudes of individuals.” He said other concerns are the turning movements of cars and that car drivers are not used to seeing motorcycles back on the road after a winter without them. It’s also important for riders to wear clothing

that makes them easy to be seen. Car drivers should be careful to treat motorcycles as if the bikes are as big as other vehicles, doublecheck blind spots, back off from motorcycles, be extra cautious when pulling in front of riders and change lanes for merging motorcyclists when they are coming onto the highway. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) will also soon be hitting local trails and back roads and there are safety measures that should be followed. Sgt. Karen Hodge, a 17-year York Regional Police traffic bureau veteran, who has a lifelong love affair with motorcycles and motocross, said she was drawn to the ATV unit when she joined the force. “I believe in enjoying our roads. I love cars, ATVs and motorcycles, but it’s no fun when it’s not being done safely and people are getting hurt,” she said. The 41-year-old Richmond Hill native said people must respect their machines. For her, regular practice is important as is not going beyond her limits. She wears all her safety apparel when she rides, including helmet, neck brace, boots, chest protector, knee pads, gloves and elbow pads. People shouldn’t get on machines they aren’t familiar with or are beyond their skill level. “Let someone know where you’re going,” Hodge added. “Check in with people, have a phone with you and check the battery.”

Award-winning comedian brings ‘baloney and wine’ to Markham By Catherine Whitnall

Derek Edwards is serving up healthy portions of Baloney and Wine at the Flato Markham Theatre on May 8. The Canadian comedian’s newest tour is described as “an uproarious romp through the increasingly strange quirks of our daily routines.” It’s the perfect order given all the chaos in the world. “I think people dwell too much on the news,” Edwards says. “The constant bombardment of negativity gets to you after a while. In the times we’re living, doing comedy

is cathartic; therapeutic even. It’s great to get out there, go for the laughs, and help people shake it all off.” Born and raised in Timmins, Edwards has spent close to 30 years honing his comedic talents and trademark sarcastic delivery. In 1995, he was the winner of the Vail National Comedy Invitational — the only Canadian to date to have won this award — presented in 2004 with the Canadian Comedy Award for best male stand-up and has been featured in the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival five times. Edwards counts being at the

that was beyond what I could have imagined,” says Edwards, who is a huge fan of the British comedian and Monty Python co-founder, and credits him for inspiring him throughout his career. “When I was done and was walking backstage, he gave me a bit of a nod. I was walking on air for like three days.” Edwards has toured extensively in North America, from Las Vegas to St. John’s, Newfoundland, and received countless accolades from colleagues including Rick Mercer and Mitch Fatel. Even with all those miles under

his belt, Edwards admits he still hasn’t completely overcome the butterflies before a show. “It’s not a bad thing though. When I’m on stage, it’s like an ongoing series of panic moments,” he quipped, adding the audience’s reaction is the perfect medication. Another way Edwards connects with his audience involves him “putting some miles on my shoes.” He regularly takes in the sights and chats with people to get the true flavour of a community. Jazz guitar prodigy Andreas Varady is coming to the Flato Markham Theatre on Friday. Only 18, the Slovak Hungarian musician has made a name for himself in the world jazz circuit. Playing at international jazz festivals, appearing on the cover of Guitar Player magazine, and being the youngest headlining artist at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Varady has been able to impress critics and fans alike with his virtuosic musical skill. The Economist & Sun caught up with Varady on tour before his arrival in Markham for a Q&A, where he will close out the theatre 2015-16 Diamond Series. Q: We read that one of your musical heroes is George Benson. We’re wondering if you have met Benson and which of his recordings you like the most. A: He’s definitely one of my heroes. I had the chance to open for couple dates on his world tour in 2014 and it was a magical experience. He’s one of the nicest people I know and he shared some

Andreas Varady, 18, is an up and coming jazz guitarist music fans have a chance to see and hear on Friday at the Flato Markham Theatre. many stories and tips with me after the gigs. Q: What would you say to a young person who says only older people like jazz music? A: We are formatted to think like that, but actually, a lot of the new jazz music

comes from young people. Older audiences like jazz music because they grew up listening to jazz, when it was more mainstream. But jazz is coming back, under different forms. Look at Robert Glasper, Kendrick Lamar,

Snarky Puppy. Kamasi Washington just played at Coachella and he comes from jazz. Q: Do you play any other instruments? A: I can play drums and also bass, but guitar is my main instrument. Q: What are your goals for your musical career? A: My main goal is just to keep sharing music and be able to perform and collaborate with musicians I like playing with. I just met Cassandra Wilson at a show last week in NYC, we talked a lot and I hope we can do something together in the future! Q: What’s it like being a touring musician at the age of just 18?

A: I’ve been playing music since I’m 4 and played shows when I was 10. I’ve been touring for 8 years and just loving it! You can catch Andreas Varady’s performance April 29, 8 p.m., at Flato Markham Theatre (171 Town Centre Blvd.). Teen author’s book delves into real-life challenges of youth

ANNUAL

By Amanda Perscio

A Markham youth is hoping to give a voice to the voiceless through her new book. Alexandra Egi, 18, wrote The Lives We Lead, about four teenaged girls faced with real-life troubles. Egi delves into topics such as divorce, peer pressure, bullying and eating disorders, but through the eyes of a teen. Providing teens a here-and-now voice was important, Egi said. “There is a lot of information out there about what an eating disorder looks like,” said the Pickering College student. “But I found it was older writers writing about what to look for. I wanted to give other teens the view from in the moment.” Egi has always loved the creative writing process, writing poetry and short stories in her spare time. Watching a friend struggle with an eating disorder and struggling herself on how to support her friend inspired her to write a book to which others her age can relate. The characters in the book offer an insider’s perspective of what bullying looks like to a teen going through it. “I didn’t want this book to be a lecture,” she said. “People always say don’t bully. But they don’t show you what bullying looks like.” Just as important is the story from the other side, she added.

Wonderland: Attempting to conquer the Skyhawk From page 1.

— needed to pull off a single barrel roll, at least not while whipping around in circles 41 metres above the ground on Skyhawk. Granted, it’s not all that easy. First off, you have to get the wings flapping in opposite directions at the right pace so the plane starts swinging then, at just the right time, you must shift your weight to start it rotating. Then, you’re supposed to hold the wings steady, or so I was told — I never reached that point. I wasn’t alone. Troyce Jaatinen, who was among a group of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets from Midland who got the first crack at the ride, struggled too. But he still enjoyed it, enough to take another spin. “It was fun,” Jaatinen,14, said. “(The best part) was probably the flipping.” Duhin Nanda, however, proved he has the right stuff. In his second attempt, he spun fullcircle an astonishing 59 times, shattering the previous record of 41 set by an employee of the amusement park. “It was really fun,” said Nanda, an onair correspondent for YTV. “I did it the

first time and I was like ‘How do people spin on this?’ But it was just finding that technique. I just did it exactly as they explained it to me. After I got my first spin, … I just held it and it kept going.” Cheers erupted when his number of spins — or inversions as they call them — were announced. The ride is equipped with a counter that tracks exactly how many rotations each pilot completes, so riders can keep score. Skyhawk is one of two rides Canada’s Wonderland launched for its 35th anniversary year. The other is the more family friendly Flying Eagles, which features two-person planes that the riders control as they glide through the sky at 8.5 metres high. “Going into our 35th anniversary, we wanted to make sure we’re doing things for families … and also for the thrillseekers,” said Dave Phillips, vice president of marketing and sales at Canada’s Wonderland. “So, as part of our 35th birthday, (adding two new rides) was a great way to provide all our guests with something for thrills. “ The amusement park officially opens for the season Sunday, May 1.

Layne Sleeth has competed in tennis competitions in Canada and abroad. But when the 14-yearold Unionville resident, who currently attends the Saddlebrook Tennis Academy, takes to the court Thursday in Boca Raton, Fla., she will represent more than just herself. Sleeth will be part of a Team Canada squad at the U16 Junior Fed Cup Tennis Championships by BNP Paribas. The Canadian girls’ team will face entries from the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico. The top two make the finals September in Budapest.

Sleeth says being on the team is a an honour and milestone in her young career. “Playing for Canada in the Junior Fed Cup is a highlight in my career so far,” she said from Fort Lauderdale as the Canadian team was tuning up for the competition in a warm-up tournament. “Playing for the Junior Fed Cup is special because it’s a team event and that is unique in tennis.” Sleeth said her presence was determined by Tennis Canada based on her results in national and international competitions. Among her accomplishments was capturing the singles’ title at the Jalisco Junior

Cup, an 18U International Tennis Federation event, in Mexico in February. Sleeth hopes her Fed Cup appearance will enable her to compete in more international events of this magnitude. To do that though, she acknowledged it won’t be served to her on a platter. “I will continue to work hard and hopefully will have a lot more Fed Cups in my future,” she said. After the U16 Junior Fed Cup, Sleeth will head to Europe at the end of next month to play in some ITF events with the goal of qualifying for the Junior U.S. Open at the end of August.

An under-14 basketball team with seven players from Markham did something no other Canadian entry has done at the LeBron James Shootout in Akron, Ohio. The Longhorns won their divisional title with a 62-56 victory over the Indiana-based Hoosier entry in the championship final. Shemar Rathan was high scorer for the Longhorns with 14 points. The Longhorns won their opening game over Always (Ohio) 77-58. Rathan led the Longhorns with a 14-point performance. Facing Hoosier in their second outing, the

Longhorns were buoyed by a 14-point effort 21 from Okay Djamgouz in a 77-58 victory. The Longhorns won their third game in a 15-0 forfeit over Brooklyn (New York). They advanced to the semifinal where they downed the Wooster Warriors 60-44. Djamgouz was high scorer for the Longhorns with 14 points. Coached by Charles Scott and managed by Stephen Spencer, other players contributing to the club’s title included Paris Shand, Khalid Long, Kenny Ngassoue, Justice Prentice, Jaylen Spencer, Michah Didier, Jordan Persaud, Justus Salmon and Dominique Ramkison.

With televisions, home theatres, computers, video games, stereos and cell phones, our homes are louder than ever. By soundproofing certain rooms in the house, you can turn your home into a quiet sanctuary and relaxing escape. Insulation is key. Used in professional recording studios, stone wool insulation is an excellent acoustic barrier that effectively absorbs sound thanks to its density and nondirectional fibre structure. Visit your local home renovation store and ask an expert for a soundproofing insulation that is easy to install. Some brands are so easy to use, they can be cut to fit using a serrated blade or even a bread knife. For the best soundproofing results, install the stone wool material in your media rooms, children’s playrooms, washrooms and laundry room. Because it provides high sound absorption and reduces the transfer of noise from one room to another, the rest of your home will be left undisturbed and your life, uninterrupted.

Markham Royals’ forward Sean Perichak will be combining his schooling and hockey career at Cortland State University this fall. Completing his fifth full season in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, Perichak, 21, started this past season with the Milton Icehawks before he was dealt to Markham. In 43 games with Milton and Markham, Perichak had eight goals and 28 assists. In the postseason with Markham, he had five goals and one assist in nine tilts. Cortland State plays in the State University of New York Athletic Conference and is an NCAA Division 3 school.

Cadets on target Five Markham residents representing 351 Silver Star Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron made their mark at the Regional Air Rifle Championships by placing seventh overall and returned with one silver medal in individual competition in Trenton last weekend. Cadets Jonas Leung, Theodore Sabarillo, Justin Li, Bradley Liu and Brian Zhang

SHORTS ON

SPORTS finished seventh in the 328-unit team competition against entries from across Ontario. In individual competition, Leung finished second in the junior category. The cadet marksmanship program is based on Olympic-style competition, with the focus on teaching cadets the proper use and safe handling of firearms. Air rifle training builds confidence, self-discipline and respect through a progressively challenging, gender-neutral recreational sport.

Jets win last tourney The Unionville major peewee Jets finished their season on a high note after defeating the Parkwood Stars 3-2 in the final of the Weston Last Gasp Tournament last weekend. Adrian Yu orchestrated the Jets’ offence with a pair of goals, while Alex Ventin added the other goal.

The Jets started the tournament by winning their first round-robin game over the Warren Park Rangers 1-0. Cole Briere scored the lone goal of the game. Rohun Pain and Jack Newberg shared the shutout. Facing the Scarborough Raiders in their second game, the Jets received goals from Lief Kolga and Briere to skated off with a 2-1 win. The Jets concluded their round-robin segment and punched their ticket to the final by routing the George Bell Titans 13-0. Adrian Yu and JD Li each had hat tricks, while William Girdwood added a pair. Single tallies were recorded by Ventin, William Wu, Daniel Kaichis, Kolga and Brandon Manuel. Newburg played a solid game to record the shutout. Jets head coach Glenn Koch was quick to praise the entire team, with key contributions from Matthew Kanhai, Daniel Poichini, William Gougoulias, Carle Visconti, Jayden Quan, Makaio Lamanna, Ethan Boutler and Matthew Trueman. — Michael Hayakawa

Malcolm Graham was quiet family man BY LISA QUEEN

n his quiet way, Malcolm Graham could light up a room with his smile and had a way of making anyone he spent time with feel special. Malcolm died at the age of 68 on March 25 at Southlake Regional Health Centre from complications three weeks after suffering a heart attack. The Grahams came to Newmarket in 1973, shortly after Malcolm graduated from Western University and a chartered accountant apprentice program with Pricewaterhouse in Toronto. They moved to town when Malcolm was offered a job with accounting firm Cossar, Hector and Payne on Main Street. They did have a tie to Newmarket since his wife Mary Beth’s parents, Gordon and Helen Ough, were born and raised in town and her grandfather, Jack Nesbitt, had been the mayor in the mid-1920s and again in the early 1930s. Malcolm and Mary Beth met in Blenheim District High School near Chatham when he was in Grade 11 and she was in Grade 9. It was love at first sight. “We met in high school and dated and that was it,” Mary Beth laughed. “He was very handsome, a fabulous smile, very athletic, just a nice guy. I don’t think you’d find

Malcolm Graham anybody that would say anything negative about Malcolm. He was one of those people, very giving in a quiet way, but always had time for people. Didn’t matter if it was business-wise or friends or neighbours. Just in a quiet way, he would be there.” They married on Oct. 29, 1966 while Malcolm was still at Western. The couple, parents of sons John and Jeff, would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this fall. When they first moved to Newmarket, Malcolm got involved with the Lion’s Club. In 1975, he and some friends founded the York North Racquet Club, a squash club that raised the hackles of some for its men’s

only policy. “There were a lot of women who were not very happy with that group, not happy at all. It didn’t bother me, but there were several others that were not too happy about it,” Mary Beth said. “It was a group of guys, there were some professional people and all kinds of great guys. They just decided they needed something (for men).” Initially, Malcolm, who would go on to establish accounting firm Bateman, Graham, Fitzpatrick on Davis Drive, was an avid squash player, but his interest waned as work demands grew. He also looked forward to an annual ski vacation with friends to

Vale, Colorado every December. Despite the pressure of work, from which he never retired, Malcolm loved spending time with family and friends at the cottage they have had in southwestern Ontario since 1977. “That was a big point for all of our family. It was always a very special place for everybody,” Mary Beth said. The whole family, including John and his wife, Connie, and their children, Mackenzie, Ireland, Conner and Liam, and Jeff and his wife, Susan, and their children, Georgia and Jack, loved spending time at the cottage. “Family was huge (to Malcolm). I just think he was very proud of what all of them have achieved,” Mary Beth said. “Particularly, for the grandchildren, I think (the cottage) is a fun place to be, you’re that next generation. He enjoyed them all. He loved having them around, loved having them at the cottage. Lots of boating, lots of swimming, lots of sailing. It was wonderful, really. A lot of family time. Malcolm worked really hard, but we had some real quality family time. Those are good memories.” Sadly, Jeff died six years ago at the age of 40 of a brain tumour after being diagnosed 12 years earlier. Because of his illness, the family has been big supporters of the

When Jeff died, his flag football league started a memorial golf tournament in his honour, a venture the family helped support. Initially, proceeds from the tournament went to the brain foundation. For the last three years, it has raised about $200,000 for the hospice at Southlake Regional Health Centre. “Those kinds of things were really important to Malcolm. You wouldn’t find him out there being the big cheerleader saying, ‘Hey look at us, what we’re doing’,” Mary Beth said. “It was always just in a very quiet way. It was huge for him to be giving back.” Malcolm will be missed by family, friends, neighbours and clients, Mary Beth said. “He was probably one of the most generous people I’ve ever met. Very kind. Always put other people ahead of himself. Even at the office, if people came in with even just the smallest problem, it didn’t matter. He would take just as much time with that person as he would with someone with a very complicated problem. Everybody felt he was giving his all,” she said. “And he had the most wonderful smile. It just made everyone else smile. He could just light up a room with that smile.”
