Police yesterday were seeking the public’s assistance in locating a man wanted in the connection with the mysterious disappearance of a 36-year-old Markham woman. Investigators with the York Regional Police Homicide Unit said Ying Chun (Annie) Li was last seen by her family in mid-June in the area of Denison Street and
Markham Road. Li has not been in contact with her family, and has not returned home. As a result of their investigations police said yesterday they have reason to believe that Li is deceased.
Still in GTA On Tuesday, an arrest warrant for manslaughter was issued for Jiarui (Jerry) Tang, 21, of Toronto. Investigators believe Tang frequents the Chinatown area of
Toronto and he was believed to be still within the GTA. Annie Li was last seen by her family June 12. On July 6 the police service’s homicide unit took over the investigation, deeming her disappearance suspicious, with the possibility foul play was involved. Police released information about the places she often attends, including the area of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue and Fairview Mall in Toronto.
A number of images were garnered by the media, including one of her leaving the Yu Garden restaurant at Bayview Avenue and Hwy. 7, followed by an unknown male June 12 at 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Li’s brother, Jeff, told the Chinese language Sing Tao newspaper he couldn’t focus on work knowing his sister’s whereabouts were unaccounted for. He said his senior citizen father was riding his bicycle around the city looking for his daughter.

THE NUMBERS Impaired driving occurrences in OPP patrolled areas for the past five years: 2010 Alcohol: 6,324 Drug: 214 2011: Alcohol: 6,267 Drug: 184 Left, Kevin Brooks’ crumpled car after the crash that killed his friend and left him paralyzed. Brooks chose to drink and drive 16 years ago. Now he shares his story hoping that others will make a better choice.
Mistake that lasts a lifetime BY ANDREW PALAMARCHUK
apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
E
very morning Kevin Brooks wakes up, there’s a wheelchair beside him that reminds him of his “nightmare”: killing his friend in a drunk driving crash. It began as a typical warm Saturday in June 2000. Brooks, then 21, was hanging out with his high school sweetheart and watched her ride in a horse show. He then went to his youngest sister’s ballet recital. After the event, Brooks attended a house party where he thought he’d have a few beers and then call it a night. But that never happened. “I ran into some old school hockey friends I’d grown up with, and one thing led to another, and we were down to have a wild night,” Brooks said. And they hopped from one party to another. At one point during the night, Brooks returned home to get more beer. He wasn’t yet “blackout drunk” and stopped in front of his car thinking something bad could happen. “We all have that voice inside that warns us at times,” Brooks said. “That was one moment where I was still consciously aware of what was going on and had that opportunity to make the better choice and chose not to.” Brushing off the warning, Brooks continued drinking and partying hard. “By the time we were leaving the last house party, we were all really drunk,” said Brooks. “We were double digit drinks for sure. I’d say well over 10, probably pushing 20.”
Three of Brooks’ buddies got in a cab, but before it left, one friend, Brendon, got out and opted to travel with Brooks. “I was like the stubborn idiot who wanted to drive drunk,” Brooks said. “From what I’ve heard, people were trying to get my keys away from me, but I had an extra pair in the glove box. ... In hindsight, too bad somebody didn’t just punch me out.” Brooks and Brendon were speeding to another party. “Going 110 to 130 in a 70 zone, just stupid. Beers are open, tunes cranked, totally not paying attention,” Brooks said. “I don’t remember what happened. I missed a corner, and the car hit a road divider and went airborne, hit the ground and rolled multiple times.”
‘nightmare’ Weeks later, Brooks woke up in an intensive care unit and learned that he had been in a crash and that he was paralyzed from the chest down. “A little bit later, I asked about who was with me and found out my buddy Brendon passed away. That was the worst thing I’d ever heard in my life,” Brooks said. “He’s gone and dealing with that was a nightmare.” Brooks contemplated suicide but was confined to a bed, too weak to even move. With the support of his family, best friend and Brendon’s family, Brooks’ outlook began to change. “It allowed me a chance not to totally give up,” he said of the support. After a two-month hospital stay, Brooks was transferred to a rehabilitation centre where he learned to dress himself, roll over in bed, sit up and get around in a wheel-
chair. It was a new life for Brooks, who had been an active man. “I could play every sport decently. I skateboarded, I snowboarded, I played hockey. I was just go, go, go, and then all of a sudden, boom, I’m in a chair.” His future career as an electrician was over, his girlfriend of two-and-a-half years left him and he faced criminal charges from the crash. “And dealing with the fact that I killed a buddy, there was so much to deal with,” he said. Brooks pled guilty to dangerous driving causing death; a charge of impaired driving causing death was dropped. “I lost my licence for three years. There were community hours and probation but no jail time,” Brooks said. “I still look at it as light.” Brooks said he felt something good had to come from the tragedy, and about two years after the collision, he began sharing his story at schools in the hopes of preventing drinking and driving. “I used to be a server and I’d be scared if I had 10 people at a table, so getting in front of an entire gymnasium of teenagers was terrifying, but once I started talking, I just sunk into a bit of a groove,” he said. “Then after, I was just mobbed by kids and they were crying, thanking me and shaking my hand. There was a connection made.” Brooks has delivered more than 1,000 presentations across Canada and the U.S. “It’s been a saving grace for me to have a positive outlet for what happened,” he said. “I can’t say I’m proud of the journey that led me on it, but I found it and I just keep looking forward.”

We still crave group entertainment experience

D
id you know that the very last VCR players have been produced and VCRs are going the way of 78s and 45 records, eight-track music cartridges (look it up, Google generation), Blockbuster Video and Betamax video cassettes? It’s true, according to a business story in last weekend’s Star. The last Japanese factory stopped manufacturing the VCR players because, ironically, parts can no longer be provided to make them. Remember how convenient and exciting VCRs were when they came out — screening recently released movies in your own home? It was a revolution, just as Sony Walkmans and iPods provided music for individuals on the go. Nowadays, individuals are downloading or carrying their own personal entertainment. No longer do we have to go to the movie theatre to enjoy a shared experience. Or sit in a concert hall to soak in a classical or rock performance with other fans who are tapping their toes or rocking out. These days, we’re all supposed to be our own DJs and entertainment directors — downloading, curating, collecting and playing a mix of music or YouTube videos or TV shows or movies according to our own eclectic tastes. But wait, we’re not all buried in our basements or family rooms, isolated in our silos of personal entertainment. There is hope — and it’s in the form of outdoor community events. Most of our communities stage weekly summer music concerts, free outdoor movie nights for families or key music events that attract thousands beyond our borders. This past weekend it was the Newmarket Jazz Festival along with Markham’s Jambana One World Festival. And starting Aug. 18, Markham’s famed TD Jazz Festival takes to hot spots all over the city. In Aurora, every Thursday night is outdoor movie night for families, while Moonlight Movies attract young and old in Richmond Hill each Wednesday in August at dif-
Marney Beck
ferent parks throughout the town. For an impressive 42 years, the Town of Richmond Hill has been presenting free summer concerts at Mill Pond Park and they never fail to attract several hundred people every Thursday night. What’s the attraction of these outdoor movies and concerts? I believe it harkens back to our shared experience; our wish to gain extra enjoyment from a movie or a concert tune by watching the smiles on our children’s faces or our neighbours dancing to a familiar song. Here’s the irony — to me, at least. When Downton Abbey was all the rage for six seasons (yes, I was among those addicted to the show), Facebook groups sprang up in many countries to allow fans to discuss plot lines, dissect characters and share the experience. Want to binge watch a few seasons of a favourite TV show? Invite a few friends over for the night. We still get extra sensory pleasure from others’ enjoyment of a movie, a concert, a jazz weekend. I no longer have any eight-track tapes, but I sure treasure numerous cassette tapes. A favourite of Christmas songs unspooled last year, which made me sad. And I once got in real trouble with my grown daughter for selling some of her treasured Disney VHS movie tapes at a garage sale; so now they sit packed away in a box, even though I doubt she has a VCR to play them. Guess it’s called obsolescencedenial nostalgia — and it would seem many of us suffer from the same condition.
Re: And what about ‘patriot’ love?, column by Bernie O’Neill, July 28. Real traditionalists sing O Canada as it was originally written in Canada’s other official language: French. The first English lyrics were written some 25 years later in 1906 and continue to be debated and revised to this day, while the French lyrics are unchanged since 1880. I’m a proud Canadian and a real traditionalist when it comes to O Canada. It strikes me that many socalled traditionalists simply don’t like change to the lyrics that they grew up with. FYI: “in all our sons command” replaced “thou dost in us command” in 1914, one of many “official” English changes over the years.
Gilles Philippe Richmond Hill
Anthem changes waste Re: And what about ‘patriot’ love?, column by Bernie O’Neill, July 28. I agree with Bernie’s comment about the recent change to our national anthem. To me, this change resembles trying to pick a bone in an egg. It’s insignificant, while wasting taxpayers’ money.
“O Canada” was proclaimed Canada’s national anthem in 1980 and it was first sung in 1880. So it is literally a piece of poetry passed along from our ancestors. We would not modify an aged poem to make it gender-neutral. Instead we only preserve and appreciate its classic integrity. By the same token, are we going to apply gender neutrality to the masterpieces of Shakespeare so that the contents would be compatible to our standards nowadays? I hope our prestigious senators or MPs are more focused on enhancing the well being of citizens, than on these unconstructive ideas.
Wally Cheung Richmond Hill
Anthem column shocks Re: And what about ‘patriot’ love?, column by Bernie O’Neill, July 28. I was shocked you printed Bernie O’Neill’s column critiquing the changing of the lyrics of “O Canada”, replacing “all our sons” with “all of us.” O’Neill, by his own slippery slope logic, equated this change with ridiculous exaggerations like the inclusion of “[a] groovy kind of love”, reducing an earnest attempt to make our anthem more inclusive and less male-
centric to an idiotic hippiedippie whim. Anyone who has thought at all seriously about gender equality would not be as ignorant as to write what he did, or pull the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” routine (“It’s just that, Canada seems to have been operating fairly well for ages with the lyrics we have”). He argues such a change flies in the face of tradition, and of course, it does change our anthem — we exchange one noun for another and the meaning remains the same. But now half the population doesn’t think to herself, “I’ll just assume it means me, too.” Mr. O’Neill has never made that assumption (or been told, essentially as he is telling me, “stop making a fuss and assume it’s you, too”). Let me assure you, it’s nice to not be an afterthought. I would ask Mr. O’Neill to please think about the words he puts on a page — he has a wide audience and he’s spreading a stance that uses exaggeration in place of logic, that champions the status quo for its own sake, and that is always on the wrong side of progress, no matter what the cause.

uReport
We’ll have our Back Ribs on sale this week at the meat counter, and hopefully we’ll have enough. I say this because we’ve run out of the meat feature a bit early the last couple of weeks. What makes our back ribs so good? First, we buy very marbled pork; that streakiness makes the meat more tender and juicy. Secondly, we don’t have the insipid little tail hanging from the one end (you would normally pay full price for it if you shopped elsewhere). Thirdly, our pork is not ‘seasoned’, which means that it’s not cut from pork loins which have been injected with water and phosphate to make them juicier (just imagine the thinking behind that). And lastly, our price is very competitive because we cut our own pork. So think ribs this week, perhaps with our own Jack Daniels OFF B.B.Q. sauce, or any other. We have lots to choose from! My name is Matthew Olivan and I am a resident of Richmond Hill. I am also a project coordinator at SJMF Youth, which is an entirely youthled, registered charity based in Markham that aims to relieve poverty by building houses for impoverished residents of San Jose de Ocoa, a province located in the southern region of the Dominican Republic. SJMF stands for “Siempre Juntos Màs Fuerte,” which is Spanish for “Together We Are Stronger” — symbolizing the unity between Canadians and Dominicans. This summer’s housebuilding trip is Aug. 20 to Sept. 5, about two weeks. In our group, there are seven other students from across York Region participating. I am entering the Grade 11 International Baccalaureate program at St. Robert Catholic High School in Thornhill. SJMF Youth allows Canadian high school students like myself to lead fundraising efforts and facilitate cross-cultural exchanges by collaborating with Dominican workers to build each new home. In our first two years of operation, our team of high school students has raised $17,000 to date and this summer we are building our second home in the Dominican Republic. We believe our work will help alleviate poverty in the Dominican and make the world a better place. We raise money through several initiatives. Members of our executive team raise money

Matthew Olivan through personal donations, asking people we know for donation money online or in person. We also have a SJMF Youth Ambassador program, allowing students to raise money, but not go on the trip. They earn one volunteer hour for every $5 raised. We also hold canvassing events and participate in events such as IgniteFair in order to gain volunteers for our ambassador program. In addition, we get donations from companies, such as BTNX Inc. We chose to build houses in San José province is because it is one of the poorest areas in the Caribbean. Families of up to 10 people live in small shacks the size of a kitchen or don’t have a home at all. Providing them with a new house is a life-changing gift for them and for their family.

There is about a 2 week window that this particular variety of high bush blueberries are available, and Cathy calls them ‘Turkey Point Blueberries’, because they are exactly as she remembers them from their Turkey Point family cottage. Fact is, these come from that same area. We bought a lot this past week and this to freeze them away, allowing us great berries for baking for those times when great berries aren’t available. I took a couple of our pies to the farmer to try, and he was impressed with how many berries are actually in the pie. The downside of really filling them is that you get a bit of ‘boil over’ when you bake them, but it’s about the experience more so than the appearance… my thought anyway. OuR BlueBeRRy PieS - These are totally made from scratch, and you’ll taste why we go to this effort. It is so much different than instore (which means factory made) Just no comparison at all baked. Available in lattice pastry or streusel. Baked fresh each day. Also available frozen unbaked. 9” size Reg. $12.95 each lemOn BlueBeRRy mOuSSe CAke - These are made with three layers of most vanilla cake, filled with one layer of blueberry mousse, and one layer of lemon mousse. It’s a great taste pairing, and the mousse layers add a refreshing twist. Two sizes $24.95 and $34.95 each. lemOn BlueBeRRy mOuSSe CuPS - These are available in the aforementioned mousse flavours. Served up in very chill marble chocolate cups – gluten-free. Reg. $6.99 each. And lastly, we’ll have lots of our BlueBeRRy BRAn muFFinS! This is another top-seller staple in the bakery, and it got there by being good! We use buttermilk, with lots of fresh blueberries baked in. Reg. $2.29 each. All these items will be featured this week at OFF While supplies last!

A tentative agreement has been struck between the York Regional Police union and the Police Services Board. The announcement last week, after months of meetings, comes more than six months after the collective agreement between the parties expired. The two sides were to sit down with a conciliator to discuss the contract Wednesday. “The Police Services Board recognizes the personal commitment and professional work of York Regional Police members and we are very pleased a mutually acceptable tentative
settlement has been reached,” board chairperson Frank Scarpitti said. “We appreciate the collaborative approach that led to a successful agreement.” It is a tentative deal and must be still be ratified by the members of the police association. Details for the tentative agreement will be released following ratification. The announcement was made amid growing tensions between the York Regional Police and its members, who have complained about excessive punishments in regards to their conduct while on duty and what the union calls traffic ticket quotas.

Youngsters play well at Disney event For a team that competed one age group up at the recent Disney International Tournament, the Markham Soccer Club under-11 girls gave a good account of themselves after reaching the final, only to come up short against California Venom 1-0 in Orlando, Fla. Employing a team of players born in 2005 and facing teams with players born in 2003 and 2004, Markham advanced to the final after routing Honduras 10-1 in their opening match and followed that up with a 3-0 win over Florida Elite. After a 2-0 loss to the Venom, Markham rebounded to edge Mexico 2-1 to gain a berth in the semifinals. Facing Quebec in that match, Markham prevailed1-0 to punch their ticket into the final and set up the rematch against California. Despite falling short in the final, Richard Alexander, Markham’s technical devel-

Coached by Sarah Alexander, players included: Zoe Markesini, Madison Mariani, Faith Fenwick, Racquel Alexander, Holly Whelan, Brooke Webster, Elisa Anzivino , Kelly Moniz, Gurleen Tor, Jahliah Deleon, Emma Fonseca, Samantha Gravina, Kayla Merkley and Maggie Lim.
Windsurfer rides wave to fifth place finish Phil Soltysiak recorded his second-best ever result on the Professional Windsurfing Association World Tour after placing fifth in the men’s
freestyle competition at the Fuerteventura Grand Slam event in Sotavento, Fuertenventura. The 29-year-old Markham resident was the lone Canadian among 48 competitors from around the world. Seeded in the top 16, Soltysiak recorded victories against Max Rowe of England in the single elimation round of 32 and Francesco Cappuzo of Italy in the round of 16. Advancing to the round of eight, Soltysiak faced Jacopo Testa of Italy before he was eliminated and relegated to the loser’s final. In the loser’s final, the fight for third and fourth place, Soltysiak lost to sixtime World Champion Gollito Estredo from Venezuela. Facing last year’s event winner Dieter Van Der Eyken of Belgium in a double elimination, Soltysiak was defeated and ended the competition in fifth place. Nevertheless, by virtue of his performance, Soltysiak moved up to seventh place in the world rankings with just one event remaining.

Li eyes medal podium in Rio BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
Four years older, one Olympics wiser. For Michelle Li, that will be her approach when she takes to the court to represent Canada in the women’s singles’ badminton competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Entering the competition as Canada’s top female player and 19th in the latest world rankings, the 24-year-old Markham resident is looking forward to making her second Olympic appearance. This time though, she hopes for far better results, after finishing 17th in singles’ competition in her Olympic debut at the 2012 Summer Games and narrowly missing out on a bronze medal in women’s doubles in those Games, when she joined forces with Alex Bruce and ended up in fourth place. “It feels good,” Li, a Richmond Hill High grad, said in anticipation of making her second Olympic appearance, while getting in some final practices at Lee’s Badminton Training Centre in Markham Wednesday before departing for Rio. “Having participated in 2012 and getting the nerves out helps this time around. “This time it feels different, in that I’m going in with more confidence and experience. I’ve grown up as a player.” Earning her Olympic selection based on world ranking points she accumulated from May, 2015 to May, 2016, Li feels some intense training she’s undergone for the last six weeks under the direction of her longtime personal coach, Jennifer Lee, will better prepare her for
what to expect on the court this time around. Taking priority on Li’s to-do list is enhancing her overall foot speed and strength. So far, the diligent training regimen appears to have paid off. “Right now I feel a lot faster and stronger,” cited Li. She is also well aware that her mental approach will also be an important ingredient. “I don’t want to get too riled up or anxious,” she said. “I just have to perform each rally one at a time. When I get to Rio de Janeiro I’ve just got to put everything together.” Entering the Olympic competition unseeded, missing out on the final seed by just one placement in her world ranking, Li’s optimism is bolstered by knowing who her first two opponents will be and having faced them in past international competitions. That will begin with a match against Laura Sarosi of Hungary on Aug. 13 and then facing ninth seed P.V. Sindhu of India Aug. 14. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Li defeated Sindhu in a semifinal match en route to winning the gold medal. “I’ve played both of them before and I’m familiar with their style of play,” she said of her pool opponents. While Li’s ultimate goal is to get on the medal podium, she’s taking a realistic approach, acknowledging it will be a formidable challenge, especially considering the sport’s popularity in continents such as Asia. “Every match will be difficult,” she said. “I wouldn’t expect anything less. If I can get in the top 16, that would be good.”

Celebrate summer’s sweeter side with local berries Dumplings: • 3/4 cup (175 mL) Robin Hood original all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup (50 mL) sugar • 1 1/2 tsp (7 mL) baking powder • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt • 2 tbsp (30 mL) butter • 1/3 cup (75 mL) milk
During the summer months, Canadians across the country are fortunate to have access to fresh and naturally sweet local berries. Whether you prefer to pick them yourself at a local farm or buy them at a farmers’ market or a fresh fruit truck on your way to the cottage, berries easily add the taste of summer to any dessert. Ideal for seasonal baking, berries are also rich in antioxidants and high in flavour. Whether blueberries, strawberries, raspberries or prairie berries are your berry of choice, this Berry Grunt recipe will satisfy any sweet tooth and make the most of your region’s seasonal offerings. This old-fashioned dessert is similar to a cobbler, but has fluffy dumplings on top. Even better, this sweet treat can be made over the campfire or on your stove in less than half an hour helping you get back to summer fun.
Directions: 1. Sauce: Place berries, sweetened condensed milk, water, lemon juice, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large pot or Dutch oven with a lid. Stir well to combine. Bring to a boil and cook gently until slightly cooked down. 2. Dumplings: Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Cut in butter and add milk. Drop batter by spoonfuls into hot berry sauce. Cover tightly with lid and simmer for 15 minutes, making sure not to lift the lid. The dumplings should be puffed and well-cooked. 3. Place dumplings in serving dish and ladle sauce on top.

Did you know? Fences can provide privacy and transform backyards into calming places to relax and unwind. But fences also may lead to disputes with neighbours if installation is not carried out with etiquette. Always place the fence within your property lines, which can be determined by examining a land survey for your home. Inform your neighbours of your intention to erect a fence, and give any concerns they might have substantial consideration. Face the more aesthetically appealing side of the fence outward to the street and to neighbours’ yards. In addition, maintain the fence once it is installed so it does not become a neighbourhood eyesore that irks your neighbours.

Clayton Daxon was ‘gift’to everyone who met him BY LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com
lice Daxon was a teaching assistant working with children with disabilities in a Newmarket school when she met nine-year-old Clayton in the early 1980s. Afflicted with Costello syndrome, a rare and severe genetic disorder that left him with multiple disabilities, Clayton was about the size of a oneyear-old baby. He had been raised in an institution, but in 1980, the province passed legislation governing special education, including requiring school boards to provide programs for children with exceptional needs. Bused in from the institution, Clayton was placed in Daxon’s classroom. “We took one look at each other and it was love at first sight, she said. Clayton couldn’t walk or talk, but he crawled along the floor, sat on Daxon’s foot and wrapped his arms around her leg. Daxon began bringing him home for weekends under a community living program. Her family, including husband Ken and their children, Tracey, Krista and Corey, embraced Clayton into their lives. But on Sunday nights, Clayton would sob and clasp Alice’s hand when she and Ken drove him back to the institution.

Lifestories “It broke our hearts to take him back in after having such a full weekend. And we had to put him right into his crib again. That’s where he was for nine years, in a crib, she said. “My husband said, ‘We’ve got to bring him home. We can’t leave him in there. What do we have to do?’ The Daxons committed to having Clayton live with them for two years in their Newmarket home. He was still living with Daxon family when he died Jan. 29 at the age of 42 in Sharon, where Alice had moved after Ken died in 1999. About three days after Clayton came to live with the family, Alice feared the arrangement wouldn’t last. Corey and a friend, who were about 12, took Clayton for a ride in a wagon, but they flipped it over on a curve and sent Clayton flying. Their case worker arrived a few days later to make sure Clayton was settling in, leaving a mortified Alice had to explain his injuries. Fortunately, the case worker took it all in stride, saying if not for the Daxon family, Clayton would never have had the chance to play and get hurt like any other child. The years ahead would be filled with struggles as Clayton dealt with his illness, but also love and adventures, including family vacations and a trip to Disney World. Clayton wasn’t formally diagnosed with Costello syndrome until his 20s, and was one of only four people in the world known at that time to have the disorder. Clayton, who could only speak about a dozen words, used an assisted device computer to com-

municate. Living with the Daxons, he learned to eat solid food and walk, although that would only last about a year before his hips gave out. He then used a walker in the house and a wheelchair when he was outside. He had surgeries on his hips, heel cords and hamstrings and suffered from severe scoliosis of the spine. “He tried so desperately. He fought his whole life to try to do everything that he couldn’t do, Alice said. As a teenager. Clayton threw himself into activities at Sacred Heart Catholic School, joining the school band and playing the bongo drums and xylophone in school concerts. He loved cooking and baking in home economic class. In his family, Clayton became known as the cupcake maker because he loved to help bake the treats for birthday parties he helped organize. A fan of slapstick comedy, he was known for his infectious laugh, his love of WWE wrestling and his woodworking skills. With assistance, he made gifts such as birdhouses and crafts. “I always used to say about him, he was an ambassador for the disabled. If he had any one job in life, that was it and he did it so well, Alice said. In Grade 9, Clayton met his best friend, Marty Nichol, who was by Clayton’s side all through high school. “He was like Clay’s brother and he became like my son, she said. Even when Nichol moved away, he sent homemade videos pretending he was taking Clayton on
adventures. Clayton was a gift, someone who made everybody happy despite his struggles, Alice said, adding more than 150 people came to his memorial service. “Everyone said how lucky he was, what a beautiful life he had, Alice said. “We all got so much back from Clayton. He taught more than he was ever taught. I think he was a gift. He had a purpose and he served his purpose well on Earth.
