balancing act
The Unionville Milliken Soccer Club has been busy. Not just on the pitch, where their house league and rep clubs are in the midst of their outdoor campaign. Away from the field of play, the club has been attempting to resurrect the Milliken Mills Indoor Soccer Dome, which houses their indoor clubs during the winter months. A fire on June 22 resulted in damage to the dome, mechanical units, artificial turf and adjacent clubhouse.

‘IMPORTANT FACILITY’ Patrick O’Hanlon, Unionville Milliken Soccer Club director of special projects, said efforts are being made to try and get the facility up and running by Nov. 6 — when the club starts its indoor season. The organization has been working with the City of Markham and their Parks and Recreation Dept. One of their first priorities, he said, is discussions with the insurance company on replacement costs. He said they have been in
contact with the manufacturer of the dome to have it rebuilt. When the dome reopens, O’Hanlon said it will be far better than the original facility that was constructed about 20 years ago. “It will be totally new and rebuilt to today’s specifications,” he said. Once the dome and artificial turf are replaced, the club will carry out work on its office. The club’s office officially opened at the Milliken Mills Indoor Soccer Dome in 2014. Mayor Frank Scarpitti said the dome is an integral part of the recreational programs the city provides. “The Milliken Mills Indoor Soccer Dome is an important recreation facility for our community that welcomes over 187,000 visitors a year,” he said in a news release. “The City of Markham has been working closely with all parties to ensure repairs to our Milliken Mills Indoor Soccer Dome are completed without major delays.” The Milliken Mills Indoor Soccer Dome is located at the Milliken Mills Community Centre at 7600 Kennedy Rd.
