Regan Breadmore was not surprised when she received a termination notice a few weeks ago.

“We knew that it was coming,” she said. “But we were hoping the city would not do this to us.”

Breadmore has worked at Town’s Little Children (TLC) Daycare for more than two decades, but in October the daycare’s lease at the Civic Centre will be up. It will not be renewed because the city needs the space.

“I don’t consider it a job. It’s more like family,” said Breadmore. “It’s going to be really, really hard.”

Anna Iacono, director of TLC, agreed.

“That was a bad day,” she said about handing out the termination notices, stating they currently employ 18 people including part time and substitute staff.

Man charged with stealing women’s underwear at Markham open house

A 65-year-old Markham man has been charged with theft after women’s underwear was stolen during an open house.

On July 26, police responded to a call in a Markham home in the Major Mackenzie Drive and McCowan Road area.

According to the York Regional Police, the house was for sale and the owners were hosting an open house.

Surveillance video from the day shows a man stealing women’s underwear from a drawer in the master bedroom.

The suspect was identified and a search warrant was executed on his residence, where

more women’s underwear was located.

Siu-But Chui is charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

He will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket Aug. 28.

Investigators are asking real estate agents and anyone who hosted an open house recently to come forward if they have experienced a similar theft.

Markham getting ready to jazz it up this weekend

This weekend summer weather and jazz music will converge in Unionville.

The 18th annual Markham Jazz Festival kicks off Thursday night and will feature about 30 concerts in the historic village.

“Jazz music, a laid back, beautiful environment, one-of-a-kind shopping, art galleries, it’s kind of got it all,” said Linda Briggs, executive director of the festival. “I think that’s one of the ways we are quite lucky, in that it’s really like a total experience. Although it’s about the music, there is a lot to love about the whole environment.”

Some of the feature artists include three 2015 Juno winners; Diana Panton, who won jazz vocal album of the year, Steve Hill, who won blues album of the year, and Kirk MacDonald, winner of jazz album of the year, solo.

And there are a number of up-and-coming artists who will be performing.

“We sometimes have been very lucky to present certain artists who become famous,” she said, mentioning Alicia Olatuja, who is headlining Saturday night.

“I think she’s going to be huge soon,” said Briggs, noting Olatuja’s biggest claim to fame was singing at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration.

The festival will feature many local artists

from Toronto and area, as well.

“Toronto has such a vibrant jazz scene,” explained Briggs, who said they are able to find new performers ever year, keeping the festival new and fresh. “There are just so many good, established and up-and-coming artists.”

Panton will open the festival Thursday night at the Varley Art Gallery.

Tickets are $50, but it is the only ticketed concert of the festival. Everything else is free, thanks to corporate sponsorships and government grants, said Briggs.

The performances take place Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 13 to 16, on three main stages; the Source Office Furnishings Varley Art Gallery Patio, the Markham Subaru Stage Millennium Bandstand and the MercedesBenz Markham Stage McKay Art Centre Beer and Wine Garden.

Additionally there will be street performances and “hot spots” at various locations.

The festival is expected to draw many fans, so parking might be difficult.

Briggs recommends visitors use the shuttle buses, which will be picking up and dropping off people at the Markham Civic Centre and Markville Mall over the weekend. Cost is $2 for round trip.

Rally for Cure taking off soon at Markham airport The Ewings Cancer Foundation of Canada is again taking to the skies and roads of York Region to raise awareness and funds for Ewings sarcoma research with their sixth annual Rally for the Cure, set for Sunday, Sept. 13.

Ewings sarcoma is a bone and soft tissue cancer that affects mostly youth between 10 and 20 years old, though not limited to that age range, and is often mistaken for growing pains or sports injuries.

When her son Reid Pernica was diagnosed with Ewings sarcoma in 2005 and there was little research or support for him, Tina Pernica of Richmond Hill founded the Ewings Cancer Foundation to help other families battle the disease that took her son at just age 19.

So far, the foundation has raised $250,000, and has co-funded three different Canadian research projects dedicated to Ewings sarcoma.

The fun, annual Rally, taking place at the Buttonville Municipal Airport in Markham, is a combination of an air rally and a car rally, both with a treasure hunt theme, as well as a barbecue and live entertainment for participants and guests.

Reid Pernica, who lost his battle against Ewings in 2007, loved aviation and was able to become a pilot and fly out of Buttonville in Markham, where he also worked

— hence the air rally in his memory.

The car rally is dedicated to Tony Ferragine, who lost his battle to the same disease in 1998 at age 22, brother of CTV Breakfast Television’s “Frankie Flowers”.

A strong supporter of the Ewings cause, Frank Ferragine will again be the celebrity MC of the fundraiser. “[Reid] would be thrilled to know Ewing sarcoma research is actually happening and is under the microscope right here in Canada,” said his mother, of progress made due to many people’s efforts.

The barbecue begins at 1 p.m. at Buttonville Municipal Airport. Cars and planes start their routes simultaneously — cars from York Region and planes from six participating municipal airports in southern Ontario.

Vehicle teams of a driver and navigator are given a booklet with a list of questions and directions to follow to be submitted to timekeepers at the finish line. Air teams consist of a pilot and co-pilot who are given a choice of routes to follow, with all teams landing at Buttonville for the end of the rally.

While tree tours have been held at least once a year for several years, this is the first edible forest tour.

The tour will begin at Maple Street and Markham Road in the York Region Food Network community garden at 2 p.m. Registration is recommended and free, and donations are welcome.

“We’re teaching people what the trees are and what parts of the tree are edible,” said Williams. “We’re getting people to look at trees in a different light.”

Harvesting food from our immediate surroundings is hardly a common activity anymore in increasingly urban areas like Markham. LEAF — Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests — is setting out to demonstrate to York residents that food can be found even from our urban forests.

This Sunday, Aug. 16, LEAF is partnering with York Region, the City of Markham and York Region Food Network to put on a firstever Edible Tree Tour. Taking place in the Old Markham Village, a representative from each partner organization will lead a guided tour around the area.

The goal is to demonstrate to residents what aspects of our natural and immediate environment are edible and how to harvest what the trees and plants provide.

Union leaders with the Ontario Elementary Catholic Teachers Association will resume labour negotiations with the provincial government this week.

Bargaining was to take place Wednesday and today.

Catholic teachers have been without a contract for more than a year and are in a legal strike position Aug. 17.

The new round of bargaining comes as the union launches a new website called Teachers Matter to inform parents about issues that could impact classrooms.

“Parents deserve to know what’s at stake in these negotiations,” union president Ann Hawkins said in a release.

“We hope teachersmatter.ca will help parents understand that there’s more at stake than a labour disruption.”

Re-purposing bedroom project yields school supplies

or parents of schoolage children, August is back-to-school season, that time of year when you are assaulted by a repeated barrage of ads telling you to get out there quickly to buy all the latest gear so your kids can compete and learn.

Not to mention entreaties from your own children, who know that the only thing worse than heading back to school, is heading back to school with a battered knapsack, tattered binders and broken pens and pencils.

For parents of adult children, however, the end of summer and fall’s season of “new beginnings” may bring a different dilemma.

Thus I found myself this past weekend, clearing through and trying to organize clutter and old textbooks and school “stuff” of adult children.

Some of you may recognize the controversial problem — how long do you leave a bedroom of a departed adult child intact before you re-purpose it to become a guest room, an office or an allpurpose storage room?

I hasten to report that my “departed” daughter is alive and well, living with her boyfriend in nearby Peel Region. She only returns home occasionally to grab clothing items.

So I asked her delicately and tactfully (as much as possible conveyed via text messages), if I could make her bedroom into a guest bedroom over the next few weeks.

“You can always return home any time,” I reassured her, “you are always our daughter”.

“Sure, no problem” was the breezy response, nicely letting me know that a better option if they ever had to move was available through bigger lodgings at her boyfriend’s family home in Guelph.

So I opened her closet and peered under the bed, to begin my room re-purpose project.

Yikes — I won’t describe too much of what I found under the bed, suffice to day that it entailed

Marney Beck at least half a laundry load of clothes.

The closet yielded several pairs of shoes and sandals that I bet she’s completely forgotten about, along with numerous pretty dresses that had fallen in a tangle to the floor.

However, I did find numerous colourful folders, shiny new binders and colourful notepads, some with price tags still on them.

Rooting through several bags and boxes of my son’s college leftovers, which were gathering dust in a different closet, I found similar unused school supplies.

I now have a collection of brand new and gently used school supplies to contribute to the Salvation Army school supplies drive in Richmond Hill and Vaughan.

A few weeks ago, the federal government added 5,000 acres to the Rouge National Urban Park from their Pickering airport block of lands. The remaining 9,600 Pickering acres are targeted for economic development.

If the federal government were to consider swapping some of those Pickering economic development acres with the new owners of the 425-acre York Downs golf course for a smaller, but important, follow-up park expansion in the Rouge’s western drainage, would anyone living in Unionville or along 16th Avenue fail to applaud?

York Downs straddles two of the Rouge’s largest tributaries, hosts some of this country’s best agricultural land, and by virtue of it being the last unde-

veloped open space in Markham on 16th Avenue, keeps thousands of vehicles off already grid-locked roads.

It would be interesting to hear if any of the three major parties, if elected in October, would explore (based on fair equivalent land value) such a swap of potentially enormous importance to this and future Unionville and Markham generations.

Several candidates in place for Markham-Thornhill riding

A majority of the main party candidates in the new federal riding of Markham-Thornhill are in place to contest the October election.

NDP Candidate: Senthi Chelliah

Senthi Chelliah is ready to be a strong voice in Parliament and wants to get results for the riding of Markham-Thornhill as part of leader Tom Mulcair’s team.

Chelliah emigrated from Sri Lanka 30 years ago and has many years of experience as both a community leader and entrepreneur.

When he first came to Canada, he launched a free hotline for community news, business and events to help build bridges in the Tamil community.

The hotline soon expanded into Tamil’s Guide, a print and online business directory.

Chelliah helped organize the GTA’s annual South Asian Trade Show, raised money for local hospitals and supported the Markham Toronto Cricket League.

He is a two-time recipient of the Ontario Volunteer Service Award and has won awards from the Canadian Tamil Chamber of Com-

merce and the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada.

In 2014, he was named one of RBC’s Top 25 Canadian Immigrants.

Sixteen York Region residents are among dozens of Canadians who have been infected by an outbreak of an intestinal illness called cyclospora since May, according to the region’s director of infectious disease control.

“We don’t know yet what the source is,” Marjolyn Pritchard said.

The microscopic parasite passed through people’s feces causes stomach cramps, diarrhea and loss of appetite and is usually contracted through infected water or food, particularly fruits and vegetables.

Eleven York residents who picked up the illness had travelled outside of Canada.

Five of the cases are not related to travel. Of the one case in May and four cases in June, one person had travelled to another province and the rest had not left Ontario.

In a normal year, York would have no more than two domestic cases of cyclospora in the same time frame, Pritchard said.

“It is certainly more than we have had reported in the past and the province is seeing the same thing. So, in Ontario, we’re seeing an overall increase,” she said.

The source of the illness is not known, so it isn’t possible to say whether the domestic cases were contracted within York, Pritchard said.

“Whenever we get any of these cases, we do the normal follow-up of finding out what people have consumed prior to the period in which they would have become ill or the incubation period,” she said.

Three cases are from British Columbia, one is from Alberta and five are from Quebec.

“The risk to Canadians is low but people with weakened immune systems, young children and older adults are at increased risk for developing complications if they get sick,” the agency said.

It is investigating the outbreak with officials from provincial public health departments, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada.

While the cause of the outbreak is not known, past outbreaks have been linked to imported produce such as pre-packaged salad mix, basil, cilantro, berries, mesclun lettuce and snow peas, the agency said.

Harper campaigns in Markham twice in two days

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made three visits to York Region since calling an early election — and twice in Markham.

On Friday he campaigned in a Richmond Hill backyard, where he spoke about universal childcare benefits.

“It was a pleasure to have PM Harper in Richmond Hill to discuss UCCB and how it will benefit every family with children,” tweeted Michael Parsa, the Conservative candidate for the Richmond Hill riding.

On Monday the prime minister visited St.

Mark Coptic Orthodox Church in Markham, where he was joined by Jobson Easow, Conservative candidate for the Markham-Thornhill riding.

Harper spoke about the Conservative Party’s plans to bring 10,000 refugees from Syria and Iraq over the next few years, if his government is re-elected.

He also pledged to give $9 million to fund groups working to protect targeted religious areas and artefacts.

A notice from the Harper campaign team went out early Monday morning to media about the 10:30 a.m. appearance.

He also returned to Markham Tuesday, with another early morning alert to media, and spoke about plans to strengthen the National Anti-Drug Strategy.

His pledges included increasing resources for RCMP clandestine laboratory teams, renewing the mandate of the Mental Health Commission of Canada for 10 years, while updating it to focus on links between substance abuse and mental health, plus creating a national helpline for families.

Harper was questioned about his views on Insite, a supervised injection site in B.C. He was also questioned about marijuana and the Mike Duffy trial.

The campaign stops come on the heels of a visit Aug. 5 by the prime minster’s wife, Laureen Harper, who dropped in on the campaign office of Conservative candidate Costas Menegakis, a Harper MP running in the new Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill riding.

Keeping our water safe

The Markham District Veterans Association will hold their fifth annual Toy Mountain Golf Tournament at Remington Parkview Golf Club Aug. 26.

This year marks the 20th year the Salvation Army has been running the Toy Mountain campaign to build a mountain of toys to provide assistance and hope to families struggling to get by at Christmas in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Markham District Veterans Association is proud to provide continued support to the Toy Mountain campaign and during the past few years has donated more than $10,000 to this worthy cause.

The tournament will be a scramble format on the club’s upper course starting at noon. There will be contests in putting, long drive, straightest drive and closest the pin.

One of the sponsors, Investors Group Financial Services, is sponsoring a $5,000 hole-in-one prize.

Entry fees are $120 per person and includes golf, cart, dinner and prize table.

African kids Choir performs For 30 years, the African Children’s Choir has been putting the seemingly distant, far away struggles of Africa right in front of the Western world through the beautiful singing voices of the children these struggles have affected. Now, they are coming to Markham.

This Sunday, Aug. 16, the internationally famous African Children’s Choir is performing in Markham and Orangeville. One more year, say parents, would help daycare relocate From page 1.

of the Markham Civic Centre for 25 years, but unless another location can be found, Markham will lose 57 spots — what parents call “high quality daycare spaces”.

Knowing that their lease was about to expire, TLC first reached out to the city in June of 2013 and discussions began between the city and TLC in the summer of 2014.

The daycare, which pays below market rent for its space, believed they would be able to stay, although at a fair market rate.

But according to the city, daycare operators were told the city could not commit to a new lease until it had assessed its own needs for space, and in January of this year, the daycare was officially notified it would not be able to stay.

The city has said the aim is not to get rid of the daycare, and work began with TLC to find a new location.

City representatives said if TLC can find an alternate space before the lease is up, they will consider a lease extension to help with the transition.

UNABLE TO FIND NEW LOCATION But so far, the daycare has been unable to find a new location.

Staff members and parents have said they remain optimistic. According to a statement from the board of directors, they are asking the city to let them stay a little longer.

Iacono is asking for a year.

“All we need right now is some time,” she

said. “An extension, so my parents can transition either to our new place that we hopefully find, or to another daycare in realistic time.”

But according to a media backgrounder sheet provided by Dennis Flaherty, director of communications and community engagement at the city, the daycare had time.

“Given there was no provision for renewal of the 25-year lease, and the city’s discussions with TLC as early as July 2014, TLC has had almost 15 months notice that they did not have a firm commitment to a new lease for the premises,” it said.

According to a notice on the daycare’s door, if they can’t find a new space soon, they will have to “end operations by Sept. 30.”

This has left a lot of parents in the lurch, says daycare representatives.

“Scrambling to get daycare in less than a month is very difficult,” said Breadmore, noting some places do not have infant care and some have long wait lists.

On Tuesday, a group of parents held a press conference to highlight the work they have done to find a solution and to share concerns.

Many spoke of the importance of highquality licensed child care in the community and how much they want the daycare to continue to operate.

“There is a crying need for childcare in Markham. York Region has one of the fastest growing child populations in all of Canada,” said Carolyn Ferns, public policy and government relations coordinator with Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care, who was an invited speaker at the media event. “So losing a child-

care like TLC daycare is not an option.”

She said she was shocked when she heard the city was not renewing the lease.

She remarked that TLC has done a lot of work toward securing a location – and that the work was done by a parent-run volunteer board of directors and “an overworked childcare director”.

Several questions were raised by parents this week, including why the city would spend money to renovate childcare space when office space is easy to find.

“I want to see the numbers — I want to see the figures, how much will it cost to renovate and gut this space that is built for childcare,” said a parent. “How expensive is it for me, as a taxpayer, to change this space to an office?”

Ferns agreed.

“It’s really hard to move a childcare centre, it’s fairly easy to find office space,” she said. “Losing a purpose built childcare centre in favour of office spaces, it just doesn’t make sense … I don’t think the people of Markham would think it’s a good use of taxpayer money.”

WILLING TO PAY HIGHER RENT The city was not invited to the press conference, so was unable to respond to parent questions.

But staff has previously said they wanted to use the city owned space at the civic centre for its growing needs, instead of purchasing or renting property at taxpayer expense.

However, Ferns said the daycare would be willing to pay more in rent money, providing

more income for the city.

Many parents and staff were also frustrated with the way the city has handled things in recent months.

Daycare operators said they were told not to tell parents to speak with councillors while negations for another city owned property was going on. They also said the city issued a cease and desist notice to a parent who started an online petition about the daycare.

Parents said they were unable to speak council members or the mayor and were instead told to go through Flaherty.

“We have tried to reach out to others, we’ve tried everything ... No response from local councillors, regional councillors. It’s been silent,” said one of the parents.

“All we want is to speak to a decision maker at the city,” said another. “We don’t want to talk to corporate communications. Come to the negotiating table and talk to us.”

Flaherty was unable to reply by press time, but the city’s media backgrounder said Markham does recognize the importance of childcare, and has “extended significant goodwill and direct financial subsidy to TLC over the past 25 years.”

While TLC was at the Civic Centre they paid $200 a month, which was well below market rates, it said, and it noted TLC also did not have to pay operating expenses until 2003.

The daycare is continuing to look for more space. So far their biggest challenge has been finding a location with enough outdoor space.

Unionville golfer wins Ontario Women’s Match Play title

Kelsey Sear captured the Golf Association of Ontario Women’s Match Play Championship with a victory over Casey Ward of Picton 1 up in the final at Woodington Lake Golf Club’s Legend Course in Tottenham last Thursday.

A member of York Downs Golf and Country Club and seeded fourth, the 20-year-old Unionville resident battled Ward throughout their match.

“It feels awesome,” Sear said. “It was really back and forth. I was up then she was up and then I made that big putt on 11 and I knew at that point I had the momentum.

Walking up 18, I had lots of confidence and I was able to make a nice chip shot to get up and down.”

Her brother, Maxwell Sear, came close to capturing the Canadian Junior Boys’ Championship at the Summerlea Golf and Country Club in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que. the same day.

But, the 17-year-old settled for being second best after losing on the first playoff hole to Charles-Eric Belanger of Quebec City.

Nursing a one-stroke lead through three rounds with an even par 216, Sear lost the lead after Belanger carded three birdies and

an eagle to equal his one-under 71 performances in the first and third rounds.

A Bill Crothers Secondary School graduate, Sear will play at the University of West Virginia this fall on a golf scholarship.

Soccer squads motor in Michigan The Markham Soccer Club sent two under-11 girls’ teams to the Michigan Rush Classic Kickoff tournament in Northville, Mich. last weekend.

With both entries competing in the Under-12 Division, the club’s Black Team captured the title in their Tier One Division that was capped off with a dramatic 2-1 shootout victory over Waza Football Club Michigan in the final.

Gabriella Scornaienchi scored the Black Team’s lone goal during regulation time.

Scoring during the shootout were Jessica Fuh, Samantha Ratcliff and Kate Griffin.

Black Team goalkeeper Aaliyah Kamdar made two clutch saves during the shootout.

The Black team reached the final after defeating Garden City Galaxy Michigan 5-1 and Greater Toledo FC Impact Ohio 6-1 during the first day of competition.

Aged scotch fitting toast to ‘historic’ life

lzheimer’s stole Marion Lewis’ memories, but her research into Whitchurch-Stouffville’s past will never be forgotten.

Lewis, along with Ruth Burkholder, created the historical walking tours of Stouffville back in the early 1990s.

“She certainly knew the town, knew the people and we would have not done the walking tours without her,” Burkholder said.

History always seemed to be a part of Marion’s life. When she went back to school in 1968 to get her teaching degree, according to her son Rod, students were more interested in hearing what life was like from her, versus learning about it from a textbook.

‘Funeral’ wishes Once Marion received her degree, she spent a couple of years teaching English to new Canadians. She then gave it up to become a stay-at-home mom. But she never lost her interest in learning.

When her husband Gary, described as the love of her life, died in 1985, Marion needed something to fill her days.

She saw an ad in a Stouffville newspaper for a genealogy class and took it.

Among those she helped connect to other family members was Bill van der Zande, a distant cousin by marriage.

Marion was a member of the Markham Berczy Settlers Association, which was formed to organize the 200th anniversary of the 67 families from Germany who

settled in Markham.

Historian John Lunau organized a women’s committee to research the genealogy of these families. Marion was tasked with researching the genealogy of the Eckhardt and Ulsen/Elsen families, said Lorne Smith, secretary/ treasurer of the organization.

Marion went on to become a valued member of the board of directors of the Markham Berczy Settlers Association until she was incapacitated, he said.

Marion grew up in a working class family with five siblings.

Edna was five years younger and “I was probably the bratty little sister and had to tag along with her friends.”

Although Edna hung around Marion when they were kids, the sisters weren’t close. It wasn’t until Edna was 40 and Marion hosted an 80th birthday party for their mother, did the two siblings connect.

They went to Florida together and Edna often spent weekends in Stouffville with her sister.

“We were the best of friends,” she said.

As a child, Edna could not pronounce Marion, so she called her “Mem”.

It was one of the many nicknames Marion would earn over the years, including Martha and Leapin’ Lucy.

She got that last one from Rod’s high school friends, who would come over and marvel at her zip.

“She kind of lived up to that with her energy and whit,” Rod said.

Marion’s sense of humour could best be described as “wick-

MariOn lewis ed and acidic,” according to Rod. She was also very direct with people, was known for giving you “the look” and for dispensing an opinion when it was needed.

She was the disciplinarian in the family, but it typically consisted of threatening “wait until your father gets home”, Rod recalled.

family, something he passed onto their children. But nothing rubbed off onto Marion.

“The only thing she could play was the radio,” Rod said with a laugh. She did, however, pass down her sense of humour to him, he said.

Cooking may also have not been her forte. Marion was known to cook something the family called “gunge”, which was a stir fry/stew concoction of meat, vegetables and gravy served on rice.

“My mother knew how to burn a good piece of meat,” Rod said, adding with a laugh, “I’ve gone to the sushi side.”

Marion met Gary, most likely at high school in Stouffville during the 1940s, according to Rod. Gary was a couple of years younger than Marion.

“Lifelong in love, that’s for sure because she never remarried,” Rod said.

In the 1960s, they bought a 20-acre piece of land in Mount Albert where Gary built his dream home.

“We used to call her a tough old bird,” Rod said of his mother’s feistiness and fierce independence.

“She liked her beer now and again. A beer and cigarette was her shtick,” Rod said, adding for reasons only Marion knew, she enjoyed her Molson Export warm from the hall closet.

Marion was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011. It claimed the lives of one of her brothers and a sister.

“From an energetic, feisty old bird, she was like the Energizer Bunny but it stole her energy and mind,” according to Rod. Before it stole her mind, Marion made a directive to her family about her funeral. There wasn’t going to be one.

Secondly, upon her death, that 1972 bottle of Dewars’ scotch she had in the house was to be “opened and drunk at my demise”.

Marion died April 12 from complications of respiratory failure courtesy of Alzheimer’s disease. She was 86.

On May 30, about 30 friends and family gathered, informally, to honour Marion, which was when they cracked open the 43-year-old bottle of scotch. “(It) was fine, I might add,” Rod said.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the beautiful and kind spirit Denise Hnilica of Markham, Ontario at the age of 89 years.

Denise was the fourth child of 13 born to Angelina (Bouvier) and Louis Fournier in Ferland, Saskatchewan.

Denise married Karel Hnilica in 1958 and had three daughters, Kim, Jan and Carla. No life challenge was too big for Denise. She had a 20 year career teaching French at the Toronto Separate School Board. She stayed active throughout her retirement working for various charities but especially that of Dr. Simone’s Canadian Food for Children.

Denise is predeceased by her husband Karel Hnilica (1988) and five of her siblings, Germaine, Angeline, Helene, Alice and Gaston. She is survived by her three daughters, Kim Denise (Brian) Love, Jan Lise (Antonisz) Pandikiu and Carla Lynn (Andre) Matta and five of her siblings Louis, Eveline, Lorraine, Gerard and Lise. She was the loving grandmother to her ten grandchildren: Amanda, Karl and Warren Love; Renee, Steven, Jake and Carson Matta and Nikolas, Andreas and Lucas Pandikiu. She leaves many friends at the Unionville Home Society.

A funeral mass was held 10:30 am Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at St. Justin Martyr’s Catholic Church, 3938 Highway 7 East, Unionville.
