Former teachers praise De Grasse By MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Like a good number of Canadians, Liana Williams, Deanna Heron and Anton Skerritt were glued to their TV sets watching the 2016 Summer Olympics when the men’s 100-metre final featuring 21-year-old Markham resident Andre De Grasse and two-time defending gold medallist Usain Bolt of Jamaica took place in Rio de Janeiro Sunday evening. For Williams, Heron and Skerritt, the big race had some added significance from a personal perspective.

Bolade Ajomale (right) wins the senior boys 100m after nearly colliding with Milliken Mills High’s Andre De Grasse in the 2012 York Region high school track and field championships. Both men are now Olympians. Note De Grasse’s right shoelace.

Mentored teenager Being longtime teachers and track and field coaches at Milliken Mills High School, Williams and Skerritt had the good fortune of mentoring De Grasse on the school’s track and field team when he first took up the sport as a Grade 11 student and through his Grade 12 year. Heron was a vice-principal at Milliken Mills during the days De Grasse was enrolled there. While De Grasse ran his way to bronze with a personal best time of 9.91 seconds to become the first male athlete for Canada to reach the medal podium at the 2016 Summer Games, Williams, Heron and Skerritt could not have been hap-

pier with what their former pupil had accomplished in his Olympic debut that saw Bolt claim his third straight 100m Olympic gold. “It was great, it was exciting,” said Williams, who watched the race with her parents. “It was amazing and just incredible to see him do so well.” A former 400m and 4 x 400m runner for Canada at the 1988 Olympics, Skerrett was equally elated. “It was fantastic. You know what? I was excited for him and his mom (Beverly). She’s worked a lot with him and I’m really happy for him.”

“I was excited for him and his mom (Beverly). She’s worked a lot with him and I’m really happy for him.” “Like Liana, I’m still giddy from Sunday’s excitement,” said Heron. “I sent Liana congratulatory messages after the race, as I did last year after Andre’s phenomenal races at the Pan American Games and when Liana sent me a photo and article featuring Andre’s breakout 100m and 200m NCAA performances.” See SPRINTER, page 3.

ANDRE DE GRASSE

From page 1.

What caught Heron’s attention once the race concluded was seeing Bolt praise De Grasse and hint he could be heir to the throne in the 100m once he hangs up his spikes. “It made me think back to my very first meeting with Andre and his family when I was at Milliken Mills when he wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to study, but was open to suggestions. “We (educators) can never know the full magnitude of greatness that lies within our students; it is our privilege to get to support and bear witness to their resilience,” she said. Acknowledging her heart rate spiked in the moments leading up to and during the final race, Williams could not help but to reflect on how De Grasse, a former Markham Economist and Sun newspaper carrier during his younger days, has progressed so rapidly in a sport he literally took up just four years ago. Recalling De Grasse did not have the proper track apparel when he first took up the sport and donned basketball shoes and shorts as that sport was his first love, Williams said they took De Grasse to the Running Free retail outlet in Markham and within 15 minutes, purchased proper track spikes and shorts for him. “It’s really hard to believe how he’s progressed so quickly and he still has so much room to grow yet,” she said. Like Williams, Skerrett said he felt the butterflies, almost similar to when he competed for Canada, as De Grasse was ready to embark on his 100m final run. “He’s one of us,” Skerrett proudly said in noting De Grasse is part of the Milliken Mills High School’s extended family. “It’s not like he’s my son, but it feels like he’s my nephew. His mom is from Trinidad and Tobago like me and I got to know him and his mom well. “I’ve been in contact with him since his junior college days (at Coffeyville Junior College in Kansas) and told him to keep up the good work. It’s nice to see how he’s progressed,” Skerrett said. “What he’s done in such a short time is nothing

Andre De Grasse of the Milliken Mills Knights jumps past Andrew Wiggins and Aiddim Walters of the Vaughan Voyageurs during senior boys’ YRAA tier one basketball playoff action at Vaughan Secondary in 2011. De Grasse’s high school basketball team shut down the next year, and he turned to track and field. Wiggins now plays in the NBA. short of amazing.” While Williams and Skerritt were quick to concede much of De Grasse’s success stems from his natural ability, they added he possesses other vital ingredients that have led to what success he’s had thus far in the sport. Skerrett feels a big part of that is his passion for whatever he does. Almost similar to what he pos-

sessed when basketball was his favourite sport that he then transferred into track and field once he saw where it could get him in terms of a college scholarship and beyond. “He was a basketball player who is now one of the top-ranked sprinters in the world. It’s unbelievable,” Skerrett said. “He believes in himself, trusts his

abilities, commits to training, has a positive attitude and has so much support from his mom and family,” added Williams. For De Grasse to develop that passion and work ethic, Skerrett was quick to give credit to De Grasse’s mother, Beverly, in steering him in the right direction. During the time she resided in Trinidad and Tobago, Beverly was a sprinter and knew what it would take to become successful. “Her support to get him to where he is right now — she deserves a lot of credit,” Skerrett said. Heron was quick to praise the attention Williams gave to De Grasse in helping him launch his track career. “He had a great mentor in Liana Williams. She, along with Andre’s very supportive family and Milliken teachers like Anton Skerrett provided an abundance of encouragement and guidance,” she pointed out. “As his coach, Liana introduced Andre to important fundamentals, connected him with a running club and took him all the way to OFSAA, making sure we posted his exciting 2012 OFSAA Track and Field debut on the Milliken Mills school sign.” With De Grasse taking on the track and field scene by storm last year when he won the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s

100m and 200m titles as a student at the University of Southern California along with gold in the same distances at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto and a bronze at last year’s world championships in Beijing, Williams said he’s inspired a lot of youngsters and is a great role model. Among those are students at Milliken Mills High School where Williams said they’ve shown video segments of his exploits on the track. Even before De Grasse took up track and field, Williams noted while at Milliken Mills High School he served as a student teacher at a feeder school as part of his co-op placement. “Some of the students that he taught are now at Milliken Mills and they remembered him back then,” she said. Currently a vice-principal at Markham District High School, Heron said she has a picture of De Grasse placed above her office desk. That picture, she said, serves a purpose when talking with students who haven’t figured out what their strengths or passions are. “I tell them about Andre’s incredible journey, how his decision to take a chance to go out for track at his new school helped him realize his own excellence and potential in ways he hadn’t envisioned.”

Last week we did an East Coast ad. It was especially neat for me as I lived there for a number of years... and it was all fun! This week we’re going to the West Coast. I have had the good fortune to travel extensively and my first trip to the West Coast was when I thumbed my way out at 16, and that was an education in itself! To this day, I remember the friendliness of the Prairie folk, the expanse of sky, the monstrous and beautiful mountains, and that endless ocean! I have been back many times, whether for golf or just food and adventure, and we’ll share some of that food experience this week. Enjoy the trip!

These are not the most tender cut that we sell, but they do have flavour, and…since they will be PRIME Grade (best in Canada), they will be more tender and flavourful than any others. Saturday marks the end of an era and for many a generation the final act in a lifelong soundtrack. The Tragically Hip will say goodbye to the stage and the fans who have followed the band through decades of concerts, hundreds of classic hits and dozens of awards. Earlier this year, Hip front man Gord Downie made a shocking announcement – he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and the band was hitting the road one last time. For some, it’s hard to say goodbye. “I want to remember them the way I saw them,” said Stouffville resident Paul Cicchini, who has seen the Hip more than two dozen times. Cicchini has seen the iconic rock band at music festivals, bars and club, small performance venues and large concert arenas. “It’s not goodbye in the sense they won’t perform any more because they are retiring. It’s goodbye in that (Gord Downie) may die. That’s why they won’t perform any more.” But every story has an end and Cicchini could not let his Hip journey end without a final goodbye. He managed to score last minute tickets to one of the three final Toronto shows. “It was a bucket list, that’s for sure,” said the father of three. “It’s not like The Who, who came back 15 or so times. The Tragically Hip will never come back again.” For many fans like Cicchini, The Tragically Hip was the quintessential Canadian band for every Canadian. “It wasn’t like watching a band from Markham make it big,” said the owner of the Duchess of Markham on Main Street Markham. “That’s how the band made you feel no matter where you were from. They were the local Canadian band.” Cicchini’s bar is one of a dozen places in the region broadcasting the CBC’s presentation of the Hip’s final concert live from Kingston this coming Saturday, Aug. 20 at 8:30 p.m. And he expects the final concert to be one of the largest events in Canadian music history. “The ratings will match a (Toronto Maple) Leafs playoff game,” he said. “To sell out a show, that’s easy. But to have a million people watching, that shows how much the band is loved.” Cicchini was one of thousands who turned up to watch The Hip perform at the Markham Fairgrounds

Please write something smart and witty and enticing about this cake like how the crumb has a very soft and fine texture and is moist and fluffy...etc - the topping is made with maple syrup, maple sugar and butter and boiled to a thick caramel sauce - poured into the pan and topped with toasted walnuts - the cake batter is then placed carefully on top of the walnuts so as not to displace them too much - after the cake is baked, it is flipped upside down and glazed with apricot glaze 4) Opera Cake Reg. Sm $15.95 Lg $25.95 Another quote from Andrea: Evan, I chose this while researching menus of top restaurants and bakeries (as you suggested) on the West Coast and many of them offered some version of an Opera Cake. Opera Cake is traditionally made with almond sponge cake and served in rectangular slices.. but this is our Village Grocer version). - 4 layers of vanilla sponge cake, soaked in coffee syrup - every layer has both ganache and coffee buttercream in between - finished with chocolate glaze and toasted sliced almonds - best served at room temperature - 6" or 8" round cakes All these items will be OFF featured this week at Enjoy your dessert!

Call out superficial remarks about women athletes

Anthem changes a tribute to soldiers

U

ntil Markham phenomenon Andre De Grasse ran into our TV screens and onto the Olympic podium alongside the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, all the medals won by Canadians were earned by women. Over and over again, sportscasters — usually male — referred with admiration, but some amazement, to the fact that all the medal winners until Sunday night’s marquee 100-meter event were female. It made me think of a media campaign, which started in Toronto, New York City and Los Angeles just before the Olympic Games began, to “call out” or shine an unfavourable spotlight on media commentary that judges female athletes on their appearance, rather than on their skills. A Dove #MyBeautyMySay campaign holds the premise that all too often, female athletes are featured in sports magazines and news stories in passive poses, glamourized and sexualized, while male athletes are portrayed in action-oriented ways emphasizing their skills. It further hypothesizes that too often media commentators focus on the looks of female athletes and on appearance rather than achievements. An interactive billboard campaign launched July 26 at YongeDundas Square in Toronto, along with other key U.S. cities, asking people to “call out” or aim negative Tweets at media outlets or commentators which belittle women athletes. Campaign organizers do credit Canadian media with being far more positive in their views and commentary on women athletes, but said such is not always the case with other media globally. As part of their rationale for the campaign, Dove and Unilever pointed out that eight in 10 (81 per cent) of Canadian women wish the media did a better job of portraying women with diverse physical appearance, and of varying ages, races, shapes and sizes. But then came the Olympic

Marney Beck Games in Rio. And onto the world stage burst a group of talented, courageous and skilled athletes — swimmers, such as triple-threat Penny Oleksiak and synchro duo Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion, rowers Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee, our bronze team of women pursuit cyclists, the entire women’s rugby team and — of course — our own golden trampolinist Rosie MacLennan. Who would dare write, or Tweet or Facebook about these medalwinning athletes by focusing only on their appearance, their makeup, or their clothing? Sadly, sometimes media representatives in their articles and more often their readers in social media posts do consider appearance or clothing or other superficial factors. We all know that online commentators, especially, can be cruel and cutting — even vicious. Tessa Virtue, Canadian ice dancing champion, is part of the #MyBeautyMySay campaign. She admits that she’s been the target of mean-spirited comments calling out for her to “be thinner” or “don’t eat” to be the best she can be in a sport that combines artistry with athletic skills. “Let’s face it, all women are judged too often on their looks instead of their accomplishments,” states Virtue. So while it’s hard to imagine that any online discussion about our medal-winning athletes would focus on their physical attributes, their swimsuits, hair or overall looks, if you see any derogatory comments aimed at our women Olympians, you’re invited to call them out at #MyBeautyMySay.

Re: Anthem changes waste, letter by Wally Cheung, Aug. 4. After reading Mr. Cheung’s letter to the editor about Bernie O’Neill’s earlier column, I have to say that I am in total agreement with his premise of not modifying a classic piece of poetry, but totally in disagreement with his conclusion that O Canada should be made gender neutral. Why? For the simple reason that the original lyrics (written and first sung in 1908, only the music was written in 1880) used the word “us”. This was changed to “sons” in 1914 to pay homage to soldiers fighting in the First World War. Our recent change back to “us” pays tribute to both of these: a return to an original word, and it still pays homage to our soldiers who are now both women and men. Though, if you want to

be picky, “in all of us command” should be “thou dost in us command”.

Column oblivious to sexism on issue

Kudos to Markham Forestry/Parks for having planted over 2,000 deciduous and fir trees all over Markham – in the middle of a heatwave! My husband and I walk through Springdale Park (upper Raymerville area) daily and had to watch many newly planted trees turn brown, shed their leaves, and die, gasping for water! Sure, tell residents to water their new boulevard trees, but who can tote pails of water to their nearby park? Where were the watering trucks?? As a taxpayer and longtime resident, I am appalled at the waste of money and these beautiful young trees!

Re: And what about ‘patriot’ love?, column by Bernie O’Neill, July 28. Column spoken like a true white man ignorant/oblivious of his privilege and the systemic sexism and heterosexism still evident every day in Canada. By the way, when the words were amended from “us” to “sons”, it was likely to invoke patriotism for our male troops in the First World War. Of course, women weren’t allowed to vote then. Being anything other than of a binary gender construct was illegal. And 100 years later, our new prime minister had to justify why half of his cabinet was female. If I wrote these words on social media, I would likely be threatened by “our sons” with sexual assault. I am one of the uncool people singing “in all of us command” at the game.

Impaired driving: the grey area of pharmaceuticals By Samantha Beattie

hen Robert Phillips got into his car one Tuesday last May he felt fine. Within a few hours, though, he’d come close to falling asleep at the wheel as he swerved into oncoming traffic and forced transport trucks onto the highway’s shoulder, said Crown attorney Ted Carlton in a Muskoka courthouse Dec. 22, 2015. Police eventually stopped the Parry Sound resident in Bracebridge. “The officer found Mr. Phillips had no odour of alcohol on his breath, but a slight slur in his speech,” said Carlton. “He stated he’d taken his medications that morning and simply felt tired.” Later that day, May 6, 2015, a urine test revealed Phillips, then 43, had a number of drugs in his system, including oxycodone – an opioid pain medication. His family doctor had prescribed the drug cocktail after Phillips suffered four concussions in five years, said defence lawyer Peter Ward. Immediately following the incident Phillips went to his family doctor who adjusted his medications and found a solution. Phillips was initially charged with impaired by alcohol, but it was withdrawn. Phillips did plead guilty to another charge –

The OPP are currently not tracking the number of pharmaceutical-related cases, but it’s “not rare for traffic officers to encounter drugs from the prescription world,” said Wallbank. “Among drivers stopped by the police, who were subsequently found to have been using stimulants, inattention, speeding, risktaking, poor impulse control and aggressive driving are common,” said the report. When Phillips’ doctor slightly altered his medications, Phillips told court he had no idea it would impact his driving ability so profoundly. But it did and he was held responsible. “He was aware the impact his medication was having on him, but he continued to drive and didn’t have reasonable consideration of others using the roadway,” Carlton said in court. When doctors prescribe medications the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario requires them to advise their patients about the risks and benefits, said spokesperson Tracey Sobers. This includes drug affects and interactions, side effects, precautions and instances when the drugs should not be taken. Pharmacists also have a responsibility. Some prescribed medications, including a handful used to treat anxiety, depression and insomnia, have warning labels, such as, “may cause drowsiness,” “do not operate heavy machinery,” or “do not drive,” reports the Ministry of Transportation. Over-thecounter drugs like Benadryl and Claritin come with similar warnings.

Police, who issued as arrest warrant for Tang on Aug. 2, said he frequents Toronto’s Chinatown area and is believed to still be in the area. Woman, 23, killed in crash Sunday on Markham-Scarborough border A man has been charged in connection with a two-vehicle crash that took the life of a 23-year-old woman early Sunday morning on Steeles Avenue. The crash took place at approximately 3 a.m. on Aug. 14 on Steeles, east of Reesor Road, on the border between Scarborough and Markham. Toronto police are investigating the crash, and said Sunday afternoon that a man would be facing charges as a result of the crash, but had yet to release details of what those charges would be. Police said a car and pick-up truck col-

lided in the incident along what is a one-lane stretch of Steeles Avenue. The woman who died was in the car, but police did not say whether she was the driver or a passenger. Two other people suffered minor injuries in the crash and were taken to hospital. The man charged was driving the truck, police said. Steeles Avenue was closed for a significant portion of Sunday morning for the investigation. Anyone with information can contact Toronto police at 416-808-1900.

Head-on collision sends woman, 28, to hospital with life-threatening injuries A 28-year-old Stouffville woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries following a head-on collision in Aurora Tuesday night. The driver of the other vehicle, a 23-yearold from Victoria Harbour, on Georgian Bay about 10 kilometres east of Midland, was taken to hospital with less serious injuries. Just before 8:10 p.m., two silver Kia cars slammed into each other on Yonge Street, just north of St. John’s Sideroad, York Regional Police Sgt. Kelly Bachoo said.

The drivers were the only people in each car, she added. Yonge Street was closed from St. John’s to Savage Road in Newmarket for several hours during the investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Major Collision Investigation Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7704, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222TIPS, by leaving an anonymous tip online at 1800222tips.com, or by texting to CRIMES (274637) starting with the word YORK.

Beatles, Beehives and havin’ a blast

So… here’s the thing. Be there or be square. The class of 1966 from Markham District High School is holding a reunion for its class members and their friends. A few classmates met informally over a year ago and once they came to terms (sort of) that it could possibly be 50 years since graduation, they thought they should hold a party to celebrate. To this end, a core committee has tried diligently to contact as many

alumni as possible. It’s not been easy. Class members are all over the country and beyond, and the committee is still hoping to fill in the holes where contact has been lost. It would welcome any assistance anyone could provide, and ask that you share this information with anyone you think might be interested. The event will take place Saturday, Sept. 10, with a Meet and Greet at 3 p.m. at the Markham District Veterans’ Hall at 7 Washington St. in Markham. This will be followed by a

roast beef dinner buffet at 6 p.m. and lots of time for visiting and dancing to the music of the ’60s. The price is $40 per person and there will be a cash bar. To register or help with contact information, please email a_robinson@sympatico.ca as soon as possible, or by Aug. 31 at the latest. There will be lots of “Whatever happened to…?” and “Do you remember?” that night. — Submitted by Sally Walker (M.D.H.S. Class of ’66)

It’s hard to overestimate the impact police officers can have in their community when they truly know the place and people. Monday night, when one “dialed in” young officer saw something he deemed suspicious, he took a chance and made us all safer in the meanwhile. It was shortly after 11 p.m. when the constable, whose name was not released by the service, was on general patrol near the Richmond

Hill Inn, on Yonge Street, just north of Gamble Road. “This officer is very familiar with the community and aware of what’s going on,” said York Regional Police Det. Sgt. Heather McVicar. “He’s very young, but one of the best we have, to be honest with you.” A car driving suspiciously in the parking lot got the attention of the young officer, who’s only been with the force just shy of two years. As the officer approached the

vehicle, one of the occupants fled on foot, while the driver remained inside. Once the investigation was complete, substances believed to be marijuana, cocaine and crackcocaine were found, along with about $3,500 in cash. What McVicar said made the biggest difference to all of our safety was that a loaded nine millimetre handgun that was located. “Yes, he stood the risk of something going wrong in a situation like that, but he took precautions

and is very well trained,” McVicar said of the constable. “You’re in the red-zone and ready for something to go sideways, but this is our job, and as a result of that, everyone is a little safer now.” Jaiden Jackson, 26, of Ajax has been charged with firearm and drug offences. He will attend court today. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the other man is asked to call police at 1-866-8765423, ext. 7241.

A York police officer decided something seemed suspicious, and made sure he got this gun and a quantity of drugs off the streets.

kids’ Registration Extra-curricular fundraising tips for parents September is around the corner and that means back to school for families across Canada, and new and exciting extra-curricular activities for kids. Unfortunately, the fundraising landscape for schools is tough and securing the cash to keep programs going is not always straightforward. But there are ways you can help. “Parents are a fantastic resource when it comes to supporting fundraising initiatives,” says Sherrie Mae Guthrie, educator and blogger. “No one is more invested in their kids’ activities, and by joining

their school’s fundraising board, parents can play an active role in securing the necessary funds to keep programs going.” Guthrie recommends three kinds of initiatives parents can suggest to help raise funds for their school: 1. Tried and true: Tired of the traditional pancake breakfast or bake sale? To up the ante, approach your local coffee shop to donate carafes of coffee to increase income. This’ll mean exposure for the coffee shop, and ultimately more funds for the

school. Win-win. 2. Physical literacy: Get your heart rate up to raise funds for sports. An assembly hall or empty classroom makes the perfect place for a sponsored Zoombathon or dance-off, provided you can persuade your kids to let you dust off your best Macarena. 3. Fundraising 2.0: Be brand savvy — a range of partnerships are open to schools, including the Buick Drive for Your Students program which offers Canadian high schools the opportunity

to raise a significant amount of money. Schools simply register to become partnered with their local dealership to host a test drive event. For every test drive, Buick donates $10; if an event exceeds 100 test drives, the amount will be doubled to $20 up to a maximum of $10,000. Contact your child’s school or the PTA to find out how you can make a real impact in your child’s school life by joining fundraising efforts for the new school year.

How to help students choose an extracurricular activity Extracurricular activities can benefit students in various ways. Academic clubs, sports and volunteer organizations provide students with opportunities to grow as people and make new friends while also teaching kids skills they will use for the rest of their lives. Many parents are aware that extracurricular activities can help students improve their chances of gaining admission to university later. But students who choose the right extracurricular activities will benefit in greater ways than simply strengthening their university applications. The following are a handful of ways parents can help their sons and daughters choose extracurricular activities they can benefit from for years to come. • Ask kids to jot down their interests. Students are more likely to enjoy and excel at extracurricular activities that align with their existing interests. Ask kids to jot down a list of their interests

or anything they might want to try. Youngsters might want to learn a musical instrument even if they have never before taken a course on music. Once kids have listed their interests, look for activities that allow them to further explore those interests. Chances are there is a schoolsponsored or community-based club or organization that will align with at least one thing on your child’s list. • Encourage kids to have fun. Kids are more likely to enjoy and fully commit to an activity if they find it fun. While extracurricular activities can help kids grow as people and improve their image in the eyes of college admissions officers, kids will get even more out of an activity if they enjoy doing it. • Look for something that won’t interfere with schoolwork. Extracurricular activities can look great on a university application, but that benefit is lost if the activity interferes with a student’s

academic performance. Some activities, including sports, demand more of students’ time than others, but make sure kids know that school always comes first. • Ask around. Ask neighbours or school officials for recommendations to help kids who have tried but failed to find the right fit with regard to extracurricular activities. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error before a child finds an activity he or she is comfortable with. Fellow parents can make great resources, and school officials likely know of a host of clubs and organizations that kids may be interested in. • Sign up with your kids. If kids are hesiLook for volunteer opportunities that can be done as a family. Beat the heat with cocktail pops Are you looking for the perfect way to capture an island feeling, embrace warmer temperatures and cool down internal temperatures? Then you can look forward to creative variations on iced, slushed, and solid classic frozen and blended cocktails trending in the coming months. This includes the latest, chicest addition to any drink menu — the cocktail popsicle. Elevate the traditional piña colada by blending fresh pineapple, coconut cream and limes and serving it in an unexpected way. You can eat these frozen pops alone, or add one to a cocktail recipe for a funky, conversation-starting beverage. Bold ginger beer and dark rum round out the delicious flavours in this grown-up piña colada.

The Modern Piña Colada Makes 1 cocktail & 10 popsicles Directions:

Ingredients: • 3 cups (750 mL) fresh pineapple rings, cored and chopped • 1 can (400 mL) coconut cream • 2 tsp (10 mL) lime zest • 2 tbsp (30 mL) lime juice • 4 oz Crabbie’s Original Alcoholic Ginger Beer • 1/4 oz dark rum

1. Blend pineapple rings and coconut cream until fairly smooth. Add lime zest and juice. Blend until mixed. 2. Pour mixture into 10 popsicle molds that each hold about 1/3 cup (80 mL). Freeze until firm. 3. Pour Crabbie’s ginger beer into a chilled rocks glass. Stir in

rum. Add one prepared popsicle. Repeat immediately with remaining pops, Crabbie’s and rum if you’re serving a crowd, or save the pops for yourself for another day. Tip: For a fun tropical flair, garnish with Tiki-inspired elements like umbrellas or edible flowers.

Pinterest-worthy window treatments for every room in your home Windows let in natural sunlight, keep out nosy neighbours and create instant style in any room. Yet we often forget to pay as much attention to window treatments as we would to any other decorative or functional element. Use this handy guide to make a statement with the windows in every room of your home

with a freestanding bench, or try your hand at a DIY version.

Bathroom Don’t forget one of the spaces guests are sure to visit. Use it as an opportunity to incorporate one of 2016’s hottest trends — bathrooms that feel like living spaces. Pick a high-quality, du-

Window treatments for your living or family room are definitely not one size fits all — you’ll want to customize them to fit the form and function of the space. If your window doubles as a patio door, vertical shades are your best bet for easy access. Choose lighter colours and flatter fashions for smaller rooms, create depth with layers or build a window cornice for extra elegance. Hang window treatments from the ceiling instead of where the window begins to make the room look larger.

ficult to get a good night’s rest, opt for room darkening shades that’ll let you sleep in even when the sun’s up. For the best of both worlds, try for Silhouette Duolite at Hunter Douglas, which combines softly diffused light shading with a room-darkening roller shade nestled behind it in the same headrail.

Kitchen Probably the most popular room in your home, this ought to be a welcoming environment with durable materials that’ll stand up to frequent cleaning from spills and cooking messes, so look for these qualities in a window treatment as well. Create a space for cozy conversations and comfortable meals with a window seat. Get the look for less

Bedroom Between sleeping and relaxing, this is the room where you spend the most time in — at home, or anywhere else. Ensure the window treatments meet your privacy and light control needs. If you work the nightshift or find it dif-

Child safety should be a priority for window treatments everywhere, but in no room is it more important than their own. From cordless and motorized operating systems, retractable lift cords, cord tensioners and wand controls, Hunter Douglas offers a wide selection of lifting system options for enhanced child and pet safety. Invest in a quality window treatment in a neutral tone that’ll grow up with them, and incorporate kid-friendly details with accessories.

Rally For The Cure, a unique “wheels and wings” event, is gearing up for the seventh annual fun fundraiser to be held Sept. 11 at Markham’s Buttonville Airport. It’s an air and car rally with an urban treasure hunt theme and there is nothing else like it in Canada open to the public. It’s a fundraiser for those who suffer from Ewing sarcoma, and just as with many

uReport Canadians, I had never heard of the aggressive cancer that strikes mostly children and young adults, until it hit my son Reid, just 17. A Richmond Hill student, he endured ankle pain for a number of years plus many doctor visits before the cause was found.

The pain worsened over time and eventually tumours were discovered in his ankle, sinus cavity, rib cavity and pelvis. We expected doctors to tell us there would be a cure, but that was not the case. A high school student at Bayview Secondary, Reid had dreamed of becoming a pilot in the Canadian Air Force and was in the application process when he lost his battle with Ewing sarcoma in

2007 at age 19. Though that dream was not realized, he was able to become a pilot through his job at Buttonville Airport on 16th Avenue. With no background in healthcare, I decided to start the Ewing Cancer Foundation of Canada with my son before he died, to both educate Canadians and fundraise for research to help other sufferers. On Sept. 11, cars and

Teams of a driver and navigator are given instructions and a rally route to follow, finishing the rally at Buttonville Airport, where there is an awards ceremony, silent auction, live music, guest speakers and a barbecue lunch.

Luxury and specialty cars are on display, along with unique airplanes. Through the rally I know my son’s legacy lives on. I believe he would be thrilled to know Ewing sarcoma research is helping others. SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID!

Thornhill resident Sara Dimerman (left) and Thornhill Councillor Valerie Burke stand among some of the newly planted trees at Felix Opatowski Park. Neighbours were invited to a meeting and celebration Sunday to enjoy recent enhancements at the park and learn about an Adopt-A-Park program to keep the green space clean.

A new hearing aid offer has been introduced for retirees. The hearing aid is a great value, simple to operate and brings IMPROVED hearing to thousands!

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology is totally invisible when worn. It offers retirees the opportunity to defy hearing loss by compensating for your individual hearing loss in all situations, day and night. Nobody can see it because it fits snugly and comfortably in your ear canal and uses the ear’s natural acoustics for natural sound quality. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about so there’s no need to keep fiddling and adjusting settings. You can start enjoying life again as you concentrate on hearing, rather than thinking about your hearing aid.

These latest digital hearing aids continuously analyze incoming sounds and adapt to each individual situation, so you always get the best hearing possible. Even in background noise. When speech and conversation sounds are detected, the sound is automatically increased at different frequencies so you can hear and understand it clearly, not just loudly. You get all the benefits you want in a digital hearing aid without the obvious sign that you are wearing one because it’s completely invisible in most ears. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

‘Free’ piano lands on family’s front lawn BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

One neighbour’s trash is another’s nightmare. That’s what happened to one Markham family when a piano crash landed on their front lawn. While out for a walk with her family, Fedilia Sum noticed an upright piano some houses down, at the curb with a ‘free’ sign taped to it.

“It was nice looking,” said she. “It was a good piano.” A little later, someone tried to push the piano along the sidewalk, one of the wheels cracked and the piano smashed onto the Sums’ front lawn. “Now, it is just a piece of crap,” she said. “These people did not use their brain.” Not knowing what do to, the mother of

three called the city and police. “I don’t want to see anybody get hurt,” Sum said. “I wanted them to know it was not our piano.” She was told the city’s garbage collection crew would try to take it if the piano could be lifted safely, but would have to wait until the next regularly scheduled collection day. For professional piano mover Jason Martin, it’s no surprise the wheels broke and the piano was left on the front lawn for about two weeks. Martin is the owner of one of the GTA’s top piano moving companies, Braymore Piano Movers, Crane Service & Storage. Piano wheels are not designed to bear the weight of moving a piano, Martin said. “I’ve seen wheels break rolling over a crack in the floor in a warehouse,” Martin said. “Someone saw a free piano, thought their kids could use it and was dumb enough to take it without having the right equipment.” To move a standard upright piano costs, on average, $250 depending on how far it has to be moved, plus an additional charge for any steps or stairs, plus a disposal fee. Without professional equipment or knowhow, a ‘free’ piano can get damaged, costing more to repair it than to move. Many pianos Martin is charged with removing end up in the garbage, since the labour to remove parts or metal costs more than the parts themselves. At one time, used pianos were fetching $1,000 to $5,000. Soon those same brands were selling for less than $1,000 when the piano may be in need of $1,000 of restoration work to get it

sounding top notch. “Now, people can’t give them away,” Martin said. “People would rather buy a brand new one for not much more or a digital piano than buy a used one that needs that much work.” Also, there is an influx of used pianos that have been sitting for years in basements. When the recession hit a few years ago, many tried to cash in on grandma’s old piano, Martin said. “The thought process was: pianos are worth money and there’s one sitting in the basement, let’s cash out,” he said. “The market got flooded.” As luck would have it, someone with a set of pulleys and chains, a dolly and a trailer came and took the piano off the Sum family’s lawn. “This is the perfect case of dumbness versus intelligence,” Sum said. “We want to educate the community: if you can’t move it, do not take it.

Duchess of Markham owner Paul Cicchini has plenty of ‘Hip’ memorabilia collected, including this backstage pass to the group’s 1996 Edenfest show at Mosport Park. He’s been to more than 25 of the band’s concerts and will be showcasing The Tragically Hip’s last concert at the pub, Saturday.

more than 20 years ago. It was mid-July 1993 and the Tragically Hip hosted a travelling music festival, Another Roadside Attraction, featuring a number of other bands and artists such as Sheryl Crow, Midnight Oil, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers and Los Lobos. General admission for the music festival cost less than $40. Cicchini’s good pal worked the lighting system and he spent most of the night in the light booth, but he did make his way to the stage. “It was a great show,” he said. “People were moving to the music. I’m not a tall guy, but at one point my feet were not touching the gound.” Markham’s Joely McEwen was a senior at Unionville High School when she scored tickets to the Another Roadside Attraction concert. For her, it was a more than a concert. “It was an adventure. It was Markham’s Woodstock experience,” said the mother of two. “People were camping and playing the Hip music in their cars. Then you would walk X amount of feet and see them live.” The 1993 concert was the start

of her musical affair with the Hip, whom she has also seen more than a dozen times. “The Hip was part of the soundtrack of our youth,” she said. “Whether you were driving, at a party or camping the Hip was playing. “Every significant milestone, you knew where you were and what Hip song was playing in the background.” McEwen also went to one of the farewell performances in Toronto. “I heard (the concert) described as a living wake,” she said. “I’ve never been to a concert where everybody knew the lyrics to every song and everyone was singing in unison.” Tragically Hip songs covered a lot of life, from when McEwen was a teen to married with two children. Seeing the Tragically Hip live acts as two complete bookends for both her and her husband, Keith, starting with Another Roadside Attraction – both Markham residents were at the same concert, but did not know each other yet. Both went to about half a dozen Hip concerts single and half a dozen as a couple. “That was their staying power,” she said. “Just like a significant hockey game, the Hip speaks to Canadians everywhere, young, old and in between.”

Jr. A Royals make trades on eve of start of training camp BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Markham Royals hinted they had some additional roster moves in the works before their main training camp commences at Markham Centennial Arena Aug. 22. The Ontario Junior Hockey League club made good on those words when they made two separate transactions. One took place with their North Division rival Stouffville Spirit where they acquired forward Sammy Hu, 19, and goaltender Connor McCollum, 19. In exchange, the Royals dealt forward

Joseph Teofilo, 19, to Stouffville. A Richmond Hill native, Hu is expected to bolster the Royals’ offence after he amassed 26 goals and 17 assists to start last season with the Newmarket Hurricanes before being dealt to Stouffville, where he compiled 13 goals and 28 assists. At the same time, the Royals feel they’ve solidified their goaltending in acquiring McCollum, who had a 3.19 goals against average and .901 save percentage in 11 regular season games with Stouffville last year. A five-foot, nine-inch, 160-lb. forward from Richmond Hill, Teofilo split time last season starting with the Milton Icehawks Next issue: SEP 17/16

and had 17 goals and 11 assists in 28 games before he was dealt to Markham where he had three goals and three assists in 24 regular season contests. Mike Galati, Royals’ general manager and head coach, was pleased in acquiring Hu and McCollum and anticipates both players will make a major contribution. Especially Hu, who he revealed, fills a need in strengthening their centre position and can put up some points. Also a consideration in making the trade, Galati noted Hu requested to be dealt to Markham.

‘Local kid’ “We needed someone in the middle and Sammy (Hu) wanted to come here,” Galati. said “He is a top six forward type of guy in this league and he’s a local kid and that helps.” As for McCollum, Galati said he’s a proven goalkeeper in the OJHL having played two seasons with Stouffville. McCollum will be battling incumbents Marcus Semaio and Scott Smith, both of whom came to the Royals last season via the trade route. Smith though, is expected to be attending

the Ontario Hockey League’s Peterborough Petes’ training camp. “Connor (McCollum) is a quality goalie and we’re getting another goalie who has No. 1 potential,” Galati said. In giving up Teofilo, Galati said he was a player they did not want to trade. “But to get quality guys, you have to give up quality and I didn’t offer him, but Stouffville kept asking for him,” he revealed. In another trade, the Royals acquired defenceman Anthony Paveglio, 19, from the St. Michael’s Buzzers for cash. Starting last season with the North York Rangers before being dealt to St. Michael’s, the five-foot, nine-inch, 165-pound Paveglio had two goals and seven assists in 50 games. Galati said he was familiar with Paveglio and has known him for a while. “He’s a veteran type of guy who is a good skater and a right-handed shot who can shoot the puck well,” he said. Before the start of training camp, Galati said he hopes to make a couple more moves. In particular, he’s hoping to acquire two more defencemen as they intend to go with seven when the regular season commences. Along with that, he hopes they can add a couple of forwards.

Yasmine Dawood was a teacher, mentor By Lisa Queen

lqueen@yrmg.com

fter her mother, Yasmine Dawood, died of ovarian cancer following a courageous fouryear battle, her daughter, Natasha, posted a moving online tribute to her much-loved mother. “She was my friend, my confidant, my mentor and my mother. She was a fighter. She never lost hope. She was a realist. She was a teacher by trait and always took the opportunity to help and assist those that needed it,” she wrote. “I look at my children and see my mother in them: a smile, an intonation, a gesture. She was beautiful. Her legacy will be carried on through the stories we share, the life we celebrate and the accomplishments we achieve. I miss you. I love you.” Dawood died last Aug. 20 at the age of 62. Born in South Africa, Dawood’s family moved to Canada in 1965 when she was 11, initially settling in Scarborough before eventually moving to Unionville.

Although her school initially wanted to hold her back a year, it soon became clear the newcomer was far too bright for that. Not only was Dawood not held back, she was promoted to the grade above her age group and began to win awards for her academic performance. She went on to study science at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus. “She became a physiotherapist. It just goes to her character. She was always willing to help,” Natasha said. “We always called her a teacher. We always said she should have been a teacher because she was always a mentor. She always had patience for people and always took the time to teach.” Over the next 30 years, Dawood would practice her profession at Mackenzie Health and Markham-Stouffville Hospital and also at Markhaven and Yee Hong seniors’ homes . dren called Dawood “Nani.” Ironically, Dawood and Joe moved into their home on a quiet, tree-lined crescent when they were expecting Natasha. Years later, Natasha and her husband, Christian, would move into their home just down the street when they were expecting Kaden. The family will soon move to Richmond Hill. After Dawood was diagnosed in the fall of 2011, she worked tirelessly to educate people about ovarian cancer, known as a silent killer because its victims often don’t exhibit symptoms until the disease has reached advanced stages. In 2012 and 2013, Dawood and her family participated in the annual Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope. They called their team Mama D, the name Christian had been calling his mother-in-law since they first met. Dawood also participated in the Fall Fling 2012 fashion show, a fundraiser for Markhaven Home for Seniors and the Unionville Home Society hosted by the Women’s Committee of Markham. Dawood, who endured 48 rounds of chemotherapy and even surgery just six days before her death, also volunteered for three grueling medical trial projects at Princess Margaret Hospital. While she knew the research was unlikely to benefit her, she wanted to help prevent her daughters, granddaughters and other women from being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the future.
