After making a successful Olympic debut in which he ran off with a silver medal in the men’s 200 metres along with bronze in both the 100m and 4 x 100m relay at the 2016 Summer Games, Andre
De Grasse made a safe return to Toronto along with a number of other Canadian athletes from Rio de Janeiro early Wednesday morning. To celebrate the accomplishments of the 21-year-old Markham resident and Milliken Mills High
School graduate, the City of Markham will hold a special day in his honour Sept. 18. While the official start time is still to be established, Mayor Frank Scarpitti said it will commence in the afternoon with a parade, followed by the main festivities inside
the Markham Pan Am Centre. In anticipation of that day, the mayor said he hopes Markham residents will mark down Sept. 18 on their calendars and join in on the special occasion. See CELEBRATION, page 34.

Lab results confirm Markham resident has West Nile virus BY LISA QUEEN
lqueen@yrmg.com
York Region has its first human case of West Nile virus this year, according to the region’s public health department. Lab results confirmed a Markham resident has tested positive for the disease, the unit announced Friday. The department won’t release any personal information about the person, not confirming if it is a man or woman or his or her age, spokesperson Joe Chawla said.
The person has not exhibited any symptoms, he added. “Education and awareness are key to avoiding West Nile virus infection,” medical officer of health, Dr. Karim Kurji, said in a statement. “Remember to cover up or stay inside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.” Spread through mosquitoes, most people who contract West Nile will not have any symptoms. Others may develop flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache
and muscle weakness. More serious symptoms include stiff neck, confusion, severe headaches and a sudden sensitivity to light. In rare cases, the virus can cause serious neurological illness including encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain. Public health offers a number of “Fight the Bite” tips to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes: - Limit outdoor activities in the early morning and early evening, when mosquitoes are most active - Cover exposed skin by wearing
long sleeves, pants and socks - Use insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors - Clean or remove standing water sources, including bird baths, empty containers, outdoor toys and flower pots. Two mosquito traps in the region have tested positive for the virus this year, public health said. For more information on West Nile virus , visit york.ca/health or contact York Region Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653, TTY 1-866-252-993.

York Region’s annual West Nile virus control plan includes: Mosquito control – Mosquito populations are reduced through a process called larviciding, using provincially and federally approved pesticides. Mosquito surveillance – Each week between June and October up to 40 mosquito traps are set up across the Region, capturing and testing mosquitoes for the virus.

3 kids at home, uninjured A Markham mother had a necklace stolen from around her neck during a home invasion Aug. 22, and her three children were in the house. At about 10:40 a.m., a male suspect rang the doorbell of the 39-yearold woman’s home. When she answered, the suspect forced his way inside and ripped the necklace from around her neck. She was not injured. The suspect fled in a darkcoloured car. The suspect is described as black, about 5 ft. 10 in. tall with a thin build and black hair in braids or corn rows, tied at the back. He was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans. The investigation is ongoing and any witnesses or people who have video surveillance in the area are encouraged to call police. Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6630, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-TIPS, by leaving an anonymous tip online at 1800222tips.com or by texting the tip to CRIMES (274637) starting with the word YORK.
Officer faces assault charge A York Regional Police officer has been arrested and charged with assault with a weapon. The incident occurred on March 30, 2016, at 4 p.m. after York police took part in a Toronto investigation near Queen Street and Lisgar Street. Officers became embroiled in foot pursuit with a male, before he was located. Police say an officer from the canine unit helped arrest the man during which time the man was assaulted. Const. Michael Partridge, 35, has also been charged with simple
assault. During the 2015 York Regional Police awards a parent praised Const. Partridge for helping find her missing son along with other officers. Const. Partridge joined YRP in 2009, worked in Vaughan before joining the K9 unit in March 2015. He is suspended with pay pending the outcome of the judicial process, professional standards conducting parallel investigation. The dog involved is to be re-deployed to another handler. Patridge is to appear in court Oct. 27. - Jeremy Grimaldi

Is your child an Olympian?
C
hildren and parents will soon transition back into another school year along with familiar and new extra-curricular activities. Many children, inspired by watching the Olympic Games, may show a renewed sense of enthusiasm or even embark on a new journey with dreams of becoming just like their favourite Olympian. I can’t imagine any parent would discourage their young child from following his or her dreams, no matter how lofty. However, as any parent of an elite athlete or Olympian will likely tell you, there’s a high price to pay — and not just financial — for this pursuit. It’s a price many say is worth every penny and time spent, but one which both parent and child need to go into with eyes wide open. And how is a parent to know if her child’s goal is realistic? My advice is to take some direction from a coach or teacher who has likely worked with hundreds of other children your child’s age. He or she is likely able to spot exceptionality and identify innate talent. Passion and desire, along with the right training — even when a child does not show great ability at a young age — can over time lead to a very exciting future. Along the road to realizing her dream, your child, parents and any siblings, will need to prepare for what lies ahead. If your child is to perform amongst other elite athletes, he will have to sacrifice a socalled normal childhood of hanging out with friends after school and attending weekend birthday parties, for example, in exchange for gruelling training sessions. Your family may have to forfeit annual vacations and instead travel to competitions. A parent may even have to turn down a job offer in another city so that their child may remain with his or her coach. In addition, siblings may resent the time you’re putting into their brother or sister. So, along the way, I suggest that parents and children re-evaluate — at the end of each sport season, for example — their commitment to the lifestyle required of an elite athlete and his family. When you decide to stand behind your child’s passion and invest your time and

Sara Dimerman money, remember that the investment is somewhat risky and does not guarantee only one outcome. It’s important that parents enter into this commitment with the conviction to never guilt, shame or pressure their child into continuing, despite signs of extreme physical or mental fatigue. Hard physical work does pay off, but there is a great degree of mental stamina required, too, and there’s nothing shameful about realizing that the commitment required as she climbs the ranks, is more than she (or you) can manage or that the activity is no longer pleasurable, but becoming hard work and drudgery. After persisting through each new hurdle, both parent and child need to watch for warning signs of burn-out and know when to bow out gracefully. Also, keep in mind that although the long-term goal may be a gold medal, the journey is equally important. Along the way, you will have shown the kind of encouragement that helps a child feel special and supported. There will likely be a strong bond between you. Your child will have developed character by working as part of a team — both on the playing field and at home. He will have developed a strong work ethic and heightened level of responsibility. She will have learned about the importance of self motivation and resilience. Through it all, try not to have her athletic skills define her. Remember to compliment her when she’s loyal to peers, when she supports her sibling or when she gives you a hand around the house. Then, when or if your child decides that she wants to live a different lifestyle, she will not feel worthless outside of athletics. Music is great, but... I should like to thank the following: 1. Those involved in creating the wonderful Unionville, Thursday Night Bandstand presentations. The events are most enjoyable and appreciated. 2. The sponsors, but hope that some do not take this as an approval for the continuation of physical destruction of our village, for financial gain. It is, after all, a privileged tax deduction. 3. All those wonderful people, of all ages, young, parents and aged, for making yourselves at home in taxpayer paid groomed landscaping areas surrounding the bandstand. Certainly all the bushes, flowers, trees, etc., should they have survived you, thank you for your kind, thoughtful demise. The touted, true, proud Markham ‘Character’ locally and worldly spoken of is, unfortunately, not borne by many attendees. Perhaps, many could benefit from mindfulness and kindness, or have it stricken from your and our Markham
vocabulary. Do you habitually destroy your own gardens? “Treat/respect the gardens, as you would your own and please pick up and dispose your waste/garbage”, as per announcer request prior to each event. Respect? Homework for next year, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’! Please check, learn the dictionary meaning, civil etiquette, mindfulness and common sense. Please practice it well. It might be useful elsewhere, as in driving, walking, creating a community spirit? It is applicable anywhere, any time and appreciated by all. Give it a shot! You might even like yourself better! I know we like you!

Pull over already Today as I was leaving a store parking lot, I heard the siren of a fire truck and began looking for the direction from which it was coming. I saw the truck, lights flashing, horn blaring, heading east towards me and
pulled over to the side to wait and see where it was going. Sadly, I was one of the few vehicles approaching the intersection who did. I sat in shock as cars continued to put the pedal to the metal to speed through the intersection in front of the firetruck which was honking its horn like crazy. Six cars sped through with no regard for the safety of the firefighters in that truck or the other people they could have hurt had the truck not slowed down. Then an ambulance with siren blarring came and nobody pulled over to give them space and they worked their way through the obstacle course of cars. Then a police SUV followed. I have seen drivers not pull over to the side of the road and stop before on numerous occasions, but to not give way to a firetruck on a call and to race across in front of them, it was unbelievable. People, please learn the rules in regards to emergency vehicles and follow them.

Craig McBratney wants everyone to know his community is joining together for a good cause — to provide food and school supplies to needy residents of his Thornhill co-op. McBratney is a resident at William Lyon Mackenzie Co-operative Housing in Vaughan, near Steeles Avenue and Bathurst Street. “This is bringing a lot of people together,” he said Monday. The food share depends solely on donated food and household consumables. A food drive started up Aug. 4 to help 12 families, McBratney said. Five more joined the food drive last week. The food share is available to all 152 houses in the co-op. Food is dropped off every Thursday. “We are going to do this until everyone has food on their table,” McBratney said in an e-mail. “The word is getting out to our families within, that it is a pleasant visit to come to our party room and get food donations on Thursdays,” McBratney said. McBratney and wife, Erin, began discussing how some of the families needing the donated food have children who need school supplies and decided to host a back-to-school donation drive, as well. He has lived at the co-op for 17 years, while Erin has lived there for 25. They are hoping the feeling of community togetherness will bring more people out to community events. “The whole thing will be positive and it is turning everything around. We are people who care about our community,” McBratney said. McBratney did not expect the first drive Aug. 4 to affect him, but it did. “This broke my heart. It really hit home with me and I will never forget that day for the rest of my life,” he said. As a result, he and Erin decided to extend the program and figure out a way to get new knapsacks, pens, binders etc., for the children of the registered families in the food share. They said a Vaughan city manager has promised to help by donating City of Vaughan binders and water bottles. After decades of receiving federal funding to help pay its mortgage, the co-op’s operating agreement with the federal government ends in 2019. Anticipating this, the co-op came under scrutiny after it began a clawback of subsidized rent, a move that divided residents. The co-op still needs what McBratney calls luxury items such as baseball hats and other school supplies ranging from calculators to coloured pencils. To donate, call McBratney at 647-388-0434. The co-op will collect school supplies until Sept. 15. Food donations do not have a deadline. Kosher food is also needed.

Back to school means stress for some, experts warn BY KIM ZARZOUR

Dr. David Ng, child and adolescent psychiatrist at Markham Stouffville Hospital, says his hospital sees surge of young patients at end of September when students realize they are not able to cope with challenges of school.
Are students today under more pressure than previous generations? Psychologists at local hospitals say they see a surge of young patients at the end of September and early October. It’s a time when kids realize that they are not able to cope with the challenges of the year ahead — whether they can’t keep up with school work, didn’t make the sports team, or face anxiety around social issues, says Dr. Jessica Cooperman, child and adolescent psychiatrist at Markham Stouffville Hospital. Dr. David Ng, psychiatrist at Markham Stouffville, believes it is tougher these days. “Families are busier and can’t afford to spend as much time with their kids, despite wanting to.” During the high school years, year-end cumulative or summative assignments take their toll; the academic load is compounded by the loss of Grade 13, Ng says. “I don’t think the students are totally prepared. All along they seem to be able to manage, but suddenly by Grade 12, they can’t.” Ng used to see students in crisis during their first year in post-secondary school, but now troubles surface at the high school level. “They come into emergency and we ask, ‘why do you want to kill yourself?’ and they say, ‘I’m dead because there are several projects that are due and there’s no way I can finish in a couple of weeks’.”

Often, it’s the first real hurdle youth have faced in life. “This generation has it easy … We may not try to spoil them, but they do have a lot of creature comforts — that’s why it’s so hard.” A summer job is no longer a given and kids may find it difficult to put effort into things they don’t want to do — fundamentals such as reading, writing and math. Parents may not be aware their kids are at their limit. “When they show up in emergency, many parents are blindsided… They’re in complete shock. Even that morning, coming to emergency, they say ‘they seemed so normal’.” There are signs to watch for: • Changes in social and activity levels and an inability to fall asleep; • Teens may be grumpy sometimes, but it’s a warning sign if they are consistently irritable; • Playing more video games than normal may be a sign they’re trying to avoid stress, or thinking it helps them cope; • Missing school — sometimes parents don’t know because they are away at work and when the school calls home, kids erase the voice mail; • Physical symptoms – they look sick, complain of constant stomach aches or headaches. None of these signs on their own mean trouble, but they are a signal to explore further, discuss concerns with a trusted adult, coach or teacher who knows your child.
And remember, a child who voices a parents’ worst fear, saying ‘I want to kill myself’, doesn’t necessarily want to kill himself, Ng says. “He is saying ‘I’m stuck and need help’ and at that point, definitely professional help is important.”
GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP? One of the key areas to address, before the first day in the classroom, is sleep — or lack thereof. Studies show children need 10 hours of sleep a night — even through the teen years — but Ng says 90 per cent of youth do not get it, and that’s not good. If you miss two hours of sleep, you lose one IQ point, Ng says, and if you miss two hours of sleep per night on five consecutive days, you lose 50 IQ points. “You may be a genius, but you’re less than average by the end of the week if you’re not getting enough sleep.” He suggests that during the weeks before school starts, families gradually dial back bedtime until kids are hitting the sack at a more school-friendly time. They may still play video games, but they’ll need to unplug earlier. One hour before bedtime is advisable, Ng says, because studies show the “blue light” from games stops the release of the sleep-inducing chemical melatonin. Use that pre-sleep quiet time for casual chats with your children. It can be an opportunity to share feelings and secrets, something kids grow to love.
What parents can do to lessen student stress Backpack? Check. Laptop? Check. Pens, binders and agenda? Check, check, check. Mental health? Did you check that one off, too? Dr. David Ng hopes so. If you forget that important item in your back-to-school checklist, the child and adolescent psychiatrist warns your child could be one of a growing number of students who turn up in hospital emergency rooms and doctors’ offices later this fall, struggling for help. Ng, a specialist at Markham Stouffville Hospital, says the days leading up to Labour Day are a good time to mentally prepare your child for the transition ahead. In the same way athletes and coaches come up with a game plan for the coming season, parents and kids can sit down together during these pre-classroom days for some school strategizing. It doesn’t need to be a long, formal meeting, but take some time to chat about what’s ahead, Ng suggests, reflect on what kids did right last year, what could be improved, and what would be helpful. A communication board on the fridge? Tutoring? Fun things to do at the end of the day?
“Importance of ‘let’s try again’ modeling by parents cannot be overstated. It’s one of those key things. We need to allow them to fail.” After hearing kids’ ideas, parents can contribute theirs. Then call it a day. Another meeting, later, could talk about other important issues such as sleep schedules or afterschool routines. Now is also the time to start the “family huddle” — a
regular time to reflect together. It can take just 10 minutes, but it’s a chance to touch base and review how things are going. When your kids can see improvements and build on past successes and problem-solving, it feeds their selfconfidence, he says. At one of these family huddles, Ng suggests asking kids what ideas they have for school routines. When is a good time to do homework? Right after school may seem best, but kids may want to try something else. Don’t be afraid to let them give it a shot, with a plan to re-evaluate every week or two. If it’s not working, try something else (but never say “I told you so”). “The importance of ‘let’s try again’ modeling by parents cannot be overstated. It’s one of those key things. We need to allow them to fail.” Ng tells of one student who said he wanted to sleep after school and get up after midnight to do homework. Parents initially balked and explained why it wasn’t the best approach, but they gave it a two-week trial and in fact he did very well on that schedule for an entire semester. His marks jumped from the 60s to 90s, Ng says. “It was a turning point in his life, because he was able to show himself he could do it. Teens can surprise you but sometimes we have to be open to unconventional ways.” And finally, don’t forget to set aside regular family time for fun — no matter how busy you are — at least once a month, Ng suggests. Kids can take turns coming up with fun activities to do together. “It’s not just for bonding but for kids to get a sense of control.” Another fun activity to try this month: Ng suggests a celebration of summer. “It helps them appreciate the good things, to talk about what was the best part of the summer.” It can be a picnic, or beach day, but it’s a way to conclude summer and can be a great new family tradition. - Kim Zarzour

Police officer denies kissing, touching woman at traffic stop BY JEREMY GRIMALDI
jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
A York Regional Police officer has rejected claims he touched a woman’s genitals while on a traffic stop in January 2015. Const. Young Min von Seefried took the stand in his own sex assault trial Aug. 23, rejecting the complainant’s claims that he also kissed her after escorting her to his police cruiser just
before 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 4, 2015. His testimony came one day after the alleged victim took the stand telling the judge that she was out with her boyfriend and on the way from a Markham karaoke nightclub to a Korean eatery to meet friends, when the Mercedes Benz her boyfriend was driving was pulled over. She told the court the officer took the couple’s licences, asked them if they had con-

sumed alcohol. After she told him she’d had a few beers, the officer asked her to exit the vehicle and escorted her to his cruiser, she said. When she was inside the marked Ford SUV, she said, the married 34-year-old father of two forced himself on her, kissing her and sticking his tongue in her mouth, placing his right hand on her right breast and forcing her hand onto his erect penis. He also placed his fingers on her clitoris after reaching through her shorts, she said. The woman’s then boyfriend, who also testified, said the woman and officer were gone between five and 10 minutes, before she returned, telling him von Seefried had Young Min von sexually assaulted her. Seefried leaves “’Do you believe it, the police officer said he court house. likes me and kissed me’,” he said she told him. “She was looking frightened. I was upset, so I stopped talking to her. I was upset because someone did this right in my presence. He did that to my girlfriend and I couldn’t do anything because he’s a police officer.” He said the officer returned their licences and said, “You’re lucky your girlfriend is so pretty” before giving the man a verbal warning to advise Service Ontario of the car’s new paint job so his registration would be in order. The alleged victim’s tearful 911 call, in which she
told the operator von Seefried “touched me and kissed me” before calling her “sexy”, was also played for the court. Von Seefried denied the allegations, suggesting while he did get the woman’s number and called her more than once that morning, he was only trying to ensure her safety. The Markham officer said he pulled the car over after he saw it parked outside a karaoke bar and noted the colour listed on his onboard police computer didn’t match with the colour of the car. Von Seefried said he pulled over the car near Woodbine Avenue and Yorktech Drive. He became concerned about the the couple’s “demeanour”, noticing they were not in the “happiest of moods.” “They barely looked at each other,” he explained. When he asked the nature of their relationship, von Seefried said the man claimed they were “friends” and the female told him they were a couple. Referencing his 10 years at York Police — in particular on drugs and vice investigation in which officers were looking into links between karaoke bars and prostitution — he said he asked the woman to join him by his cruiser to make sure she was driving with the male willingly. It was only after the female got out of the Mercedes that her “spirits brightened” becoming “flirtatious” with him, possibly because of the alcohol, von Seefried said. By the end of the chat, during which the woman was seated in the back seat of his cruiser, he said he took down her number so he could call her later to ensure her wellbeing. The trial continues.

Production for the all-new Ford GT supercar built in Markham will be extended another two years. With significant numbers on the wait list for the $400,000 carbon fiber, twin-turbocharged, 600-horsepower supercar, Ford Performance will produce the car for another two years and will re-open the application process in early 2018. “While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors,” said Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance. “We want to keep Ford GT exclusive, but at the same time we know how vital this customer is to our brand.” Owners for the third year of production will be pulled from those already on the wait list. Those who have already applied to own the supercar would have to update their request with the car company. Extending production also falls in line with a recent decision by Ford Performance to continue to race the Ford GT in International Motor Sports Association and World Endurance Championship series for the next four years. “Ford GT has racing in its blood,” said Ford executive vice-president, Raj Nair. “The

Encourage activity to set kids free for life It is no secret that inactivity is an epidemic among Canadian children. According to a federal government report, only 9 per cent of kids aged five to 17, get the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. This has both short- and long-term consequences, the most obvious being a growing population of unhealthy Canadians. Would you like to join others in an initiative to do something about it? It is true that the benefits of being active span beyond physical health. Participating in sport helps children learn important life skills – like discipline, confidence, and teamwork – and it provides an environment to foster self-esteem and overcome perceived limitations. Learning these skills early creates a strong foundation. In other words, sports equip kids for life. “Unfortunately, some kids miss out on these opportunities simply because of the costs associated with organized sport, “says Landon French, president of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities.
“Our organization which includes 2,400 community partners across Canada, is looking to remedy the issue of cost. In fact, since 2005 we have helped over one million kids get into sports and physical activity.” A great way to help kids get active, says French, is by encouraging them with programs they enjoy. Dreams of playing in the NHL, or representing Canada at the Olympic Games may be a motivator for some children, but many others value fitness, fun, making friends, or team building more than competition. Finding the right activity will help foster a lifelong love for the sport. “Physical activity is an essential building block in a child’s development, and we want to ensure that every kid has an equal opportunity to play,” French continues. “We provide funding for dozens of different activities so children can be active in a way that is fun for them. This way, they are more likely to be active for life.”

Barbecue caps off wonderful summer in our riding
Every year since I’ve been elected, I’ve held a community barbecue, and this year marks the ninth barbecue I’ve hosted. This past Sunday, in Memorial Park in Stouffville was by far the most well-attended, with nearly 700 members of the Oak RidgesMarkham community joining us. I would like to say a tremendous thank you to the talented performers who spent their Sunday afternoon with us: Celia and Annie of the Caardia Band who sang our national anthem and several other pop hits; the Sanatan Mandir Cultural Centre Seniors’ Club which per-
formed an Indian Garba dance; Lalita Sharma who taught us “Laughing Yoga”; Sal Amenta who treated us to some wonderful numbers on the accordion; the Stouffville Academy of Music and Dance which for another year showcased their amazing dancers; and, last but not least, the Phoenix Academy of the Arts who performed a classical Chinese dance called Moonlight over the Lotus Pond, followed by a Tai Chi Boxing demonstration. Thank you also to the Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire Dept. and York Region EMS for attending.
I had the pleasure of being joined by Deputy Mayor of Markham Jack Heath, Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong and Councillor Karen Rea, Ward 4 of Markham, Councillor Don Hamilton, Ward 3 of Markham and School Board Trustees Marlene Mogado and Elizabeth Crowe from the York Catholic District School Board. Thank you all for coming! I would be remiss if I did not say a special thank you to Allan Bell, our emcee for the afternoon. Allan graciously volunteers his time to do this role year after year, and he is a true champion for our community, especially through his tireless
ed some of the best athletic talent from our community on the international stage of the 2016 Rio Olympics. I cheered as Rosie MacLennan from King Township, who was Team Canada’s opening ceremony flag bearer, became the first Canadian summer athlete to win backto-back Olympic gold with her win in women’s trampoline. And I sat on the edge of my seat as Andre De Grasse from Markham became the most successful Canadian sprinter in 20 years with his bronze medal in the 100-metre sprint, silver in the 200-metre sprint and bronze in the men’s 4x100m relay.

Update every room with the colour white White is a versatile colour in home decorating. White helps any space look effortlessly chic, blends well with just about any colour and can be incorporated into various design styles - from modern to traditional. While the colour white is always trendy, the paint manufacturers Benjamin Moore chose white (Simply White OC-117) as their “it” colour for 2016. White can be used nearly anywhere inside and outside the home. Improving interior and exterior spaces with white elements is easier than you might think, and it instantly can make anything look as good as new.
Kitchen While rich cherrywood cabinets and deeply hued granite countertops have long been popular in kitchens, creamy
white cabinets paired with blonde wood countertops can work together to make kitchens seem open and airy. If all white is not your thing, brighten up kitchen spaces with white canisters, cookie jars and a fresh bouquet of white flowers to add instant appeal.
Living Room Use white as a base colour for living room spaces so you can build on it with other hues on pillows and draperies, mixing and matching however you see fit. Homeowners who have children and/or pets should look for furniture with removable slipcovers. This way they’re easily removed and laundered.
Bathroom White bathrooms look fresh and are easy to clean and main-
tain. White tiles provide a classic look. Include coloured bath mats, towels and shower curtains to break up the white as you see fit. A neutral white base makes it easy to switch out colour schemes whenever you feel like it.
Bedroom Feminine and fresh, white bedrooms may not be the first choice for novice designers. If the prospect of white on white seems too sterile, offset deeper hues on bed linens and walls with white furniture. This provides some pop against the darker contrast. Keep in mind that doing a bed up in all white means it will always be easy to find matching sheets and pillowcases, allowing you to play with textures while making it possible to ensure everything looks cohesive.

White is a versatile colour to use around the home. It’s consistently a favourite among designers for its crisp appeal.
Outdoors Use white paint on trims, shutters, mailboxes, and more to provide that pop of contrast against the rest of the home. White complements just about every colour, making it a versatile choice on a home’s accents regardless of the main exterior colour of that

home. White and other light shades will reflect the sun as well, contributing to cooler temperatures on walkways, decks and other structures, which can be advantageous to homeowners who live in warm climates. Is it any wonder that white
continues to be a classic and popular colour to use around the home? Whether you do so with monochromatic white roomscapes or accent pieces, you can incorporate white into design plans throughout your home.

The real estate market will always have its ups and downs, but real estate is an oft-profitable investment. Real estate investors do their investing for various reasons. Some see a house as a place to hang their hats for years and years, while others look at properties as nothing more than investments. Buying a home with the intent to fix it up and resell it is called a “fix and flip.” In such situations, investors buy homes at below-market prices before refurbishing the homes with the goal of recouping their initial investment and then some when the homes are ultimately put back on the market. Investing in a fixer-upper requires a leap of faith and a vision of what the home can look like in the future. Turning a real estate lemon into lemonade requires certain skills and a good measure of patience. The following are some guidelines to get anyone started. • Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Make an honest assessment of your abilities and which renovations, if any, you can handle. If you are unskilled or inexperienced working with your hands, then it can be easy for an investment property to
quickly become a money pit. Before purchasing a property, hire a trained home inspector to tour the home with you and point out all of the areas that will need renovation. With this list, begin getting estimates on how much money the work will entail. Determine if this fits with your budget or not. You do not want to invest so much that it exceeds what you could feasibly recoup when it comes time to sell. • Overlook cosmetic things when visiting properties. Cosmetic issues include all of the easily replaceable items in a home, such as carpeting, appliances, interior paint colours and cabinetry. Focus on the bones of the house - the architectural integrity and those little touches that you envision having a “wow” factor. • Seek the help of experts. Some flippers think they’ll save the most money by doing all of the work themselves. This isn’t always the case. Professional architects, designers and contractors may help you save money. Contractors have an intimate knowledge of where to buy materials and may be able to negotiate prices based on wholesale
When looking for a property, ignore the cosmetics like paint and fixtures, which are the easiest to update, and focus on the structure of the house.
or trade costs. In addition, experts can help you avoid common pitfalls because they’ve already done this type of work time and again. It’s smart to rely on expert advice, even if it means investing a little bit more. • Save money by doing some work
yourself. While the pros may tackle the more complex parts of a given project, such as rewiring electricity or changing the footprint of a home, you can still be involved. Ask to participate in demolition, such as taking down walls or removing old materials from
the home. Such participation may be fun, and it can save you substantial amounts of money on labour. • Recognize that not everything must be completely redone. Realize that, in some instances, a coat of paint and some new accents may be all you need to transform a space. For example, if kitchen cabinets are in good condition, see if they can be refaced or painted instead of replaced entirely. Install new door pulls/ handles to add visual interest. Look for some ready-made items, such as bookshelves, instead of installing custom carpentry. • Think about what the buyer wants and not what you want. Renovate with an eye toward prospective buyers’ needs. Keep things neutral and accommodating. Research the latest trends to understand what buyers might be seeking in a home. You want potential buyers to envision themselves moving right in. Renovating a fixer-upper takes time, but it can be a worthwhile project, and one that can help anyone turn a profit in a booming real estate market.

The information is then processed to let you feel pain and other sensations. Because nerves are essential to all you do, nerve pain and damage can seriously affect your quality of life. What Are the Symptoms of Nerve Pain and Nerve Interference? With nerve interference there can be an wide array of symptoms. Which ones you may a have depends on the location and type of nerves that are affected. Interference can can occur to nerves in your brain and spinal cord. The board agreed to launch a pilot project at Cornell library branch to introduce a foodfree children’s section from February to May of this year. The community response was positive, with some people saying the library should have done it sooner, said Patrick Pan, branch manager for the Cornell library.
After five months of the pilot project, the children’s area was neater and safer, he said. The board decided to continue the food-free children’s area at that branch. The pilot project will be rolled out to other Markham branches starting in September, Pan said. “The library board’s decision is a crucial first step,” Deboran said in an email.

When Andrea Mariano died in her first week at Queen’s University last September, her death touched Thornhill residents Peter Deboran and Jyoti Parmar in a personal way. “It hit home because we knew that our children would be having the same challenges and possibly the same consequences as her, unless we did something about it,” Deboran said. Andrea Mariano, a university student from Thornhill, ate a smoothie on campus that contained either dairy or peanut products, both of which cause severe allergic reactions. “I cried, because although most parents may once in a while feel sad or fearful that something terrible might happen to their child, I regularly feel this because food is everywhere,” Deboran said. His wife, Jyoti Parmar, also had a strong reaction. “Every parent’s worst fear is losing a child. As parents of children with food allergies, the thought of an anaphylactic reaction is always on our mind.” The family lives on the Markham side of Thornhill and two out of three of their children have serious food allergies. Their eldest child, Sahil, 12, is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and soy. Their middle child Anika, 10, has no allergies. Jaya, their youngest daughter, 6, is allergic to dairy, eggs, tree nuts and peanuts. In the year since Mariano’s death, the tragedy has served as a kind of catalyst, spurring
the couple to take action close to home. The parents have been lobbying the Markham Public Library board to eliminate food in the children’s area of libraries. They have also organized a walk in memory of Andrea Mariano to raise money for the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Research Program at SickKids Hospital in Toronto. Deboran and Parmar first met with the Mariano family in March to discuss the fundraiser and the couples have met regularly to plan the event ever since. Deboran is a vice principal with the Toronto District School Board and Jyoti Parmar is a dentist with Toronto Public Health. Their children’s food allergies are anaphylactic — which means they are life threatening. “In our children’s case, they could die within 15 minutes if they mistakenly ingest even a microscopic amount of their allergen and we’ll never be able to say goodbye. This is not about personal choices. They did not choose to have allergies,” Deboran said. Back in November of last year, Deboran and Parmar presented an appeal to the Markham Public Library Board to limit food in libraries. One reason why the couple approached the board is because their children were unable to use the library branches because of food allergies. “Lots of people eat,” Deboran said. “I’ve seen parents feeding kids full meals”, he said referring to libraries and community centres. “I’ve seen parents with food everywhere.”

The Markham Aquatic Club swam into some uncharted territory when they took to the pool at the recent 2016 Canadian Age Group (18 and Under) Championships in Calgary. In the end, the club made some big waves after they recorded their best-ever finish with a second-place result in the combined team championship. In the women’s division, the Markham Aquatic Club returned with a national championship banner, which was the first age group national banner in the club’s recent history. In the men’s team championship, they finished second. Rob Novak, Markham Aquatic Club coach, could not have been happier with the results produced by his 29-member contingent in their final event of the 201516 campaign. “The club put an exclamation point on an outstanding and successful season,” he said. “We added yet another new chapter of uncharted
territory.” Reflecting on the club’s success, Novak felt it began even before they entered the water when they went on a team-building excursion to Banff National Park. “There’s value in (team work) and it’s something a lot of people don’t see these days. “The trip helped bring our team close together and all of our competitors were very supportive of each other throughout the week of competition,” he cited. Highlighting the Markham club’s performance was Elan Daley, 11, who established a Canadian Age Group record in the Female 11-12 50-metre freestyle after touching the finish line in 27.07 seconds. Daley’s time eclipsed a prior mark held by Shauna Collins of the Regina Optimist Dolphins Swim Club in 1990. Also making some waves was Kayla Sanchez, who dominated the Female 15 years old category after swimming her way to 12 individual medals. That performance enabled her to capture her category’s

Aquatic club makes splash in Calgary
Celebration will be for all Markham Olympians, mayor says Recalling the following De Grasse received after he took the track and field scene by storm and literally coming out of obscurity last year with his accomplishments at the National Collegiate Athletic Association championships along with the 2015 Pan American Games and World Championships in Beijing and continuing with the recent Olympics, Scarpitti is confident the citizens of Markham will come out in full force. At the same time, he noted not only has De Grasse made a name for himself, but the City of Markham has also gained added exposure in international circles through his feats. “I’ve been impressed all the way along
From page 1.
“On Sept. 18 we invite everyone in the Markham community to join us at the Markham Pan Am Centre to welcome home our Milliken Mills hero Andre De Grasse, and to celebrate his incredible achievements at the Rio Olympics,” he said. “Andre’s track accomplishments in less than three years is unprecedented. “To watch his performance against seasoned athletes such as Usain Bolt and the U.S. track star Justin Gatlin confirmed that he will represent Canada and Markham as a new track talent with gold medal potential in Tokyo 2020.”

with how the community has supported Andre,” he said. “We saw that last year at the Pan Am Games and the way in which people came together to talk about Andre and at Markham Olympic Square where people met and cheered him on during his races. “No doubt he’s helped give the City of Markham some added recognition.” Finding the time to get up in the wee hours of the morning to personally greet De Grasse and his mother, Beverley, on behalf of the city upon their arrival at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Scarpitti was foremost impressed with how humble and unselfish he was. In particular, he noted how De Grasse refused to don the Olympic medals he earned when he was at the airport, citing it would deter from the attention the other Canadian athletes who also were on the return flight also deserved. “It’s about Team Canada and not him, even though he was proud of what he had done,” Scarpitti said. “That speaks for what he’s all about.” With De Grasse exhibiting those personal traits, Scarpitti feels he serves as an ideal inspirational role model for the youth of Markham. “For him to go to his first Olympics and perform well and to do it with class and confidence and to have fun there and to enjoy the moment all the way through — that says a lot,” he said. While the Sept. 18 festivities will centre on De Grasse, Scarpitti was quick to add it will
also be a celebration for the accomplishments of other Markham athletes who competed in Rio de Janeiro. That would include the likes of Phylicia George, who ran in the women’s 100m hurdles and 4 x 100m relay, Michelle Li, Canada’s top female badminton player, Sandro Fiorino, assistant coach of Canada’s bronze medal-winning women’s rugby team and team member Charity Williams, who honed her skills with the Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Football Club, fencer Maxime BrinckCroteau, swimmer Javier Acevedo, who competes with the Markham Aquatic Club and Mo Zhang, Canada’s top female table tennis player who trains at the Markham Pan Am Centre. “We are extending an invitation to the whole Markham Olympic roster who were at Rio de Janeiro,” Scarpitti said. “Right now we want to see who will be available. The difficulty there is that athletes don’t put their feet up for very long. They are back into training, competing or even going back to school. “Hopefully they can come.” To host the main event inside the Markham Pan Am Centre, Scarpitti pointed out it adds to the legacy of why the facility was originally constructed. “It’s not only for training purposes, but also for special events like this,” he cited. The Markham Pan Am Centre is located at 16 Main St. S. in Unionville. For further updates as to when the Sept. 18 festivities will commence, log on to www. markham.ca

Royals train for second season With training camp now under way, Markham Royals general manager and head coach Mike Galati wants to see how the first-year players he has at his disposal will respond competing in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. While camp is just in its early stages, he’s been impressed after the Royals played their first pre-season tilt on the road against the St. Michael’s Buzzers, Sunday. Utilizing a roster comprised entirely of rookies, the Royals battled a St. Michael’s team that dressed some veterans and gave a good account of themselves before succumbing 5-3. Max Golod, Brandon Cooper and Allister O’Hagan, on the power play, each scored once for the Royals, who trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-2 through two. Vince Michelizzi and Sean Jaggerman split goaltending duties for Markham and had 36 shots directed at them. Markham took 36 shots on St. Michael’s net. “I thought we had a real good game,” Galati said. “We played all of our prospects and St. Mike’s had around nine to 10 regulars in their lineup. It was a good test for our
.com
young guys.” With 35 players in training camp, Galati likes what he sees thus far, as the club prepares to embark on its second season in Markham. What has impressed him foremost is the high level of skill exhibited by those in attendance. Of the rookies in camp, he feels anywhere from four to five players stand a good chance of making their opening day roster. Among those, Galati hinted, were Cooper and O’Hagan. At the same time, though, the Royals are hoping they can retain some players who might be on the bubble and sign them as APs. “Right now we want guys who work hard and have skill and can play within a structure,” Galati said. “Right now, the guys are buying in and we have a good camp.” With two home pre-season games coming up starting Friday when the Royals face the Mississauga Chargers at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday against the Toronto Junior Canadiens at 3:30 p.m., both at Markham Centennial Arena, Galati said they will trim their roster down after those two games. At the same time, he said, they will begin to insert some veterans into the starting lineup for those two tilts.

Personal Prayer To The Holy Spirit Our Mother of Perpetual Help Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favor has been granted. - P.B.
