Teena Bogner, president of the Newmarket Taxpayers Advocacy Group, isn’t surprised by a report saying government workers get paid more than their private sector counterparts
Bloated bureaucracy: Do we pay too much? Lisa Queen lqueen@yrmg.com A new report from a public policy think tank that highlights the gold-plated salaries and benefits government workers
receive compared to their private-sector counterparts comes as no surprise to a York Region taxpayers’ group. “They have formidable pension plans, they have excellent benefits, and for the most part,
where most of us are putting in eight- to 12-hour days, they are putting in their seven-and-ahalf-hour days. Not that I have a problem with that,” Teena Bogner, president of the Newmarket Taxpayers Advocacy Group

Manage your great expectations to survive the holidays
Lisa Queen lqueen@yrmg.com Come on, you know you do it. Despite years of evidence to the contrary, you picture the holidays as something akin to a Norman Rockwell painting with rosy-cheeked children and loving family members gathered around a perfectly cooked feast. So, why do gatherings of loved ones tend to end up like a scene out of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation instead? All-American goofy dad Clark Griswold may dream of the perfect oldfashioned family celebration but instead ends up with bickering and eccentric relatives, pretentious neighbours, mooching family members, an overcooked turkey carcass, an incinerated Christmas tree, a jelly of the month work bonus, a police SWAT team, a trailer chemical toilet-related explosion and 25,000 energy-sapping outdoor lights. Sound familiar? York Region experts are weighing in with some tips to help manage our great expectations so we don't drive ourselves crazy in the pursuit of perfection. The best way to make the most of the holidays for yourself, not to mention your family and guests who are bound to prefer comfortable glad tidings over stressed out ostentation, is to keep things as simple as possible, according to Thornhill's Sara Dimerman and Newmar-
Mike Barrett/Metroland
Do you have high hopes for the holidays but wind up stressed or disappointed? York Region experts can help you manage your great expectations. Lowering your holiday expectations can put a smile on your face.
ket's Kathy Russell. "Most people want to impress their guests by being the hosts and hostesses with the mostest. They may have the best Christmas ornaments and hand embroidered towels hanging in the bathroom," psychologist and author Dimerman said. "However, keep in mind that if you overdo things, guests may feel that they could never do as well and may even be reluctant to invite you back for fear of being judged as not good
enough. So keep things simple, try not to go overboard in your striving for perfection and know that your good friends will love you for your flaws and imperfections." Russell, owner of Butler Girl Services concierge and professional organizing company, agreed. "I think the biggest thing is, I always say to people, keep it simple because they go all big, extravagant Norman Rockwell and it just becomes overwhelming," she said.
"And the other thing that I think is important is write everything down, from everyone you have to buy for to what you have to shop for on grocery day to setting up your house so it's down on paper and it's out of your head." Get any stuff that you can do early out of the way, Russell said. For example, set the dining room table a day or two in advance. "It just makes things simpler so as the day creeps up on us, at least one less thing needs doing." Decorate only the rooms you are going to use, said Russell, adding the technique will curb post-holiday burnout. "Because it's afterwards when everyone is just exhausted from it all and they look at the tree and they hate Christmas
and they hate everything. Just keep it simple, I can't stress that enough," she said. Consider hiring outside help for tasks you just can't stand doing yourself. Butler Girl is offering a holiday special of three hours work for $150. Russell's other suggestions include sticking to a budget, making sure the size of your tree is appropriate for the size of the room and allows for easy flow of traffic and keeping a stash of hostess gifts available so you don't have to rush out when the stores are crammed. Dimerman also offered several helpful hints. "Order in. Even though you may think that this shows less effort on your part, keep in mind that if you're not so frazzled from preparing food all day, you
may be an even more energetic host," she said. "Putting the ordered in food on nice platters may make you feel a bit better about putting in more effort and your guests will likely not be any the wiser." Consider a daytime drop-in open house rather than a sit-down evening meal. Discuss roles that each of your family members can play when entertaining. A smaller child can be responsible for hanging up guests' coats, for example, Dimerman said. "There's no shame in using recyclable paper plates rather than having to load or wish dishes," she said. "Again, no one usually minds and if they do, maybe they're not worth having on your guest list anyway." Prepare yourself in advance, Dimerman said. "If you're used to getting into a fight with your sibling every year, plan ahead to do something different before either of you erupt," she said. "You can't change other people, but changes in yourself have to impact on how others around you respond or react, too." If all else fails, remind yourself that no one else is having the perfect holiday either. "Watch movies about other dysfunctional families coming together so that you are reminded you are not alone and a certain amount of dysfunction is normal," Dimerman said.

Let’s get on with electoral reform

umours of the impending demise of Canada’s first-past-the-post voting system appear to have been exaggerated if recent developments on the electoral reform front are any indication. Then Liberal Party leader and now prime minister, Justin Trudeau, was emphatic throughout the 2015 election campaign that it would be the last conducted using the voting system that had been in place since Confederation. What a difference a year makes. Trudeau’s ambitions to see first-past-the-post replaced seem to have gone off the rails given the confusing scene that unfolded in Parliament this month. The committee tasked with examining electoral reform delivered its majority report recommending the government come up with a new system and put it to voters via a referendum, but that notion was dismissed by Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef. Instead, she suggested the all-party committee had failed in its mandate and simply kicked the can back to the government. Monsef went on to allege the committee’s membership had overcomplicated the issue. The opposition, naturally, took umbrage and defended their members, while, in some cases, also attempting to hoist Trudeau by his own petard. An easy target, perhaps, given that some Liberal members have expressed mixed feelings on the push for electoral reform in time for the 2019 election and that the prime minister, himself, has suddenly seemed reluctant on the idea, going so far as to suggest that the urgency for reform lessened when his government won power. Despite everything, Monsef says her hope is that some form of electoral reform legislation will be introduced in the spring. To get some sense of what that should look like, the federal government has launched an online survey, at mydemocracy.ca, and sent out information cards in the mail. This, too, has created controversy. Ultimately, democratic reform is a tricky thing, but the Liberals made pursuing it a crucial component of their platform during their election and shouldn’t be able to simply abandon it when the going gets tough. There are numerous ways to gauge support for different voting systems, and by all means pursue them, but remember that many of those who voted to elect this government likely did so, at least in part, because of the pledge to replace the antiquated first-past-the-post with something more democratic. Enough theatre. Let’s get on with it.

Leave vehicles at home on Oct. 31 I never much cared for Halloween, but as soon as my kids reached about five or six it quickly became my
favourite night of the year. The kids would put on one of the amazing costumes my wife had spent days making (OK, she may have cheated with the Harry Potter wizard hat) and when it got dark, around 6 p.m. (before they messed about with daylight savings), we’d set off along our local streets looking for the universal sign of a “hit” - pumpkins on the doorstep. One of the kids would knock on the door, nervously wait for it to open, then, “Trick or treat?” A few pieces of candy in the pillowcase, and on to the next house. We’d meet school friends, neighbours, dogs, even raccoons, and all manner of witches, wizards, goblins and ghosts. We’d see the most amazing carved pumpkins and ingenious decorations. Then, back home to share out the loot (I got the fun-sized Coffee

Crisps, yeah!). Off with the stage makeup, a few pieces of candy each and in bed by 7:30. Contrast that with the ludicrous scenes witnessed on Main Street this past Halloween. Dozens of assorted road barges (illegally?) parked up and down Main Street and the surrounding side streets, four-way flashers going, bored-looking drivers tapping steering wheels and staring off into space. The offspring disgorging from the vehicles knocking on a couple of doors and then trudging back to the cars to be driven 20 yards down the road to repeat the process. Children dressed in regulation costumes, carrying regulation orange plastic pumpkins, likely bought that afternoon. Worse, dozens of parents many with babes in arms - and older children, despite
constant media warnings, were dashing out into the road without apparently noticing or caring about passing cars, and this was at 9 p.m. What must the scene have been like at 7? So, since when did Halloween involve the car? Seriously, parents. Leave it in the garage, get out with your children, go around your own neighbourhood and enjoy the experience. Yes, the decorations on Main Street are amazing; but, if you must drive there, go some other night. If it’s all about how much candy your kid ends up with, then go buy a multipack from a store and stay at home! T. Pope Unionville

Baked Bries — These are available in three flavours, including our Brandied Cranberry, Mrs. Ball’s Peach Chutney, and Caramelized Onion. doreen’s Cranberry Sauce — Personally, I love this with a lot more than turkey – roast pork and chicken come to mind – or just right out of the tub! Grethe’s Cheese apples — This Danish contribution comes from Grethe, our tall blonde Dane who is in her 30th year of tenure at our store. This is one of those ‘signature items’ from our store, and got to be that simply because they are really great! We are actually featuring two flavours in addition to the original, those being Cranberry, and Mango Ginger. Christmas Candles and napkins — ‘Doting’ runs in Cathy’s family, and these are doted upon by Cathy’s big sister Carol...and just so you know, they are both amazing. doreen’s Fruitcake — The ultimate Fruitcake, both light and dark, and just a little heads-up; the ‘light’ is only light in colour. The flavour is rich and it’s pretty hard to have just one piece. Tourtières — These savoury Pork Pies have long ago overflowed the bounds of Quebec. They are a Christmas must, and are available in either 9” size or individuals. Cheese — In all its savoury beauty, and probably the neatest selection of crackers to match. dried Fruit Trays — It’s me that makes these, on a wide variety of lovely platters. I pick the premium fruit, and arrange it tastefully – it’s edible and thoroughly enjoyable art! Smoked Salmon by evan — We use fresh Atlantic salmon, cure it and season it, and then slow-smoke it over oak until it’s fully cooked – it will flake into cracker-size portions. Even more of a fave to me is the Smoked Black Cod that we make – it is subtle and sublime. Both these items can be ordered in whole or half sides if you have a number of guests. Sausage Rolls — All made here, sausages too! ... and a wide variety of hors d’oeuvres from my friend Anne Kaukonen from ‘Appetizers and More’. Gift Hampers — We make a number of styles, but they are only a suggestion, as they can include whatever you feel would be most appropriate for the occasion – and that can include spirits, too!

WHy BUy OUR HaMS?
The story is this … we are heavily into the ham business, but in the oldfashioned way. To many folks nowadays, ham is ham; if you’ve tried one, you’ve tried them all. That is, unless you are old enough to remember what ham originally tasted like before the process of making them became mechanized. Machines? Yes, that’s right. Nowadays almost all hams (including spiral honey-baked hams) are put through a process called “tumbling”. It’s like a giant dryer, but with the opposite function. This machine boosts ‘yield’, which means hams grow bigger in weight during the process, (just read the ‘protein added’ part of the label to find out how much it has ‘grown’). The good part (for the manufacturer) is that: a) you have more ham to sell because they’ve all expanded and; b) all the little miscellaneous bits of pork can be put through this process as well because it glues it all together in the shape of a ham ($1.99 supermarket ham). The bad part (for the customer) is that gone for good is the texture, tenderness and flavour that made ham famous in the first place. At our store we make ham in the time-honoured, pre-mechanical way, by hand! Come pay us a visit – we’ll restore your faith in ham! It’s best to order early!

CRANBERRY MAPLE
We make amazing Smoked Turkeys— probably because we start with our amazing fresh turkeys. These are becoming increasingly popular, especially with our Asian customers. It seems that we always make a few less than what we need, which causes a few problems. If you would like one, it must be ordered in advance, before Dec. 18th, because it takes a week to get them ready. Secondly, be sure that you specify “smoked turkey,” otherwise it goes on the list for regular turkey. it’s easy, really! Order deadline is december 18th. TURKEYS FREE RANGE
Although turkey is the overwhelming choice for Christmas dinner, it’s not everyone’s first choice. We have a really big selection of premium meats to choose from. For starters, no one that I know goes to the length that we do to pick delicious Pork loin Roasts, available either stuffed or plain – or Crown Roasts. The sauce is true of our Prime Rib Roasts. Our single criterion for picking our meat is the eating quality and I know that especially at holiday times when dinners are special, this is key. Our whole inventory of centre cuts this holiday is ‘Prime Grade’; the best eating grade in Canada, and the U.S. for that matter. We pay a premium to get this grade, and we must charge a bit more, but this is the time that you especially want the best. Poultry options are nice large capons and cornish hens, and our salmon is second to none. You’ve got lots to choose from!
We’ve sold these amazing turkeys for the last 30 years – and I’ve written all that can be written about them. So at risk of boring you folk who have read this for the last many years, there are a couple of points that I’d like to make to our newer customers. Firstly, our turkeys eat lots of grain and corn, as much or as little as they want, because they run loose. Add to this a gentler de-feathering process which leaves more of the natural flavour and the odd feather with the turkey, and you’ll have a turkey that will exceed your expectations for flavour and moistness, without the aid of the artificial enhancement that Butterballs and some other pre-basted turkeys receive. They come with a little ‘pop-up’ thermometer as well, just so you know when they’re done, which is often a bit quicker than you might expect. They range in size from 14-21 lbs, and for my taste, the optimum eating quality is from those in the 18-21 lb size, as they have a ‘good finish’. Call us to place your order. If a whole turkey is more than you can handle, we have portions available, from Boneless Breast Roasts (either stuffed or plain which is $8.95/lb.), to my fave Boneless Thigh Roasts for dark meat lovers which is $4.99/lb. Anything that you can imagine /lb in turkey we’ll have for you.

B AKING FOR CHRISTMAS! WHAT’S
Our bakery looks like Santa’s Workshop at this time of the year; every nook and cranny is filled with shortbreads, gingerbread, yule logs, Christmas cake, puddings, and all the elves are scurrying about baking, painting, wrapping and getting orders ready. Most of you know the drill for this time of the year; not everything that we normally make is available. So we have the time and space to make all our Christmas goodies. The store will thankfully be very busy from now till, Christmas eve, and especially the 22nd, 23rd and 24th. On each of those days, we do about a weeks business in one day, so you can imagine the work involved to get everything made. To do this, we need to limit the selection for those days, and to impose an order deadline of December 21st evening. We ask you to look over our complete selection and place your orders by that time. For 64 years, senior brings the magic of Santa to life AMANdA PersICO apersico@yrmg.com
For some, the notion of breaking a world record whips up images of the strongest or the fastest. For Unionville resident John Crane, breaking a world record means years and years of bringing joy to children. His dream is be the world’s longest serving Santa. Crane, 83, has been playing Santa Claus for more than six decades. “Santa is real,” he said with a wink. “Growing up, I was always told to believe.” He first donned the red and white suit at the age of 19, stuffing the suit with a large pillow so his fake belly would shake like a bowl full of jelly. He sported a fake beard, until he was able to grow one of his own. “Kids were always pulling the beard off,” he said as his crisp blue eyes twin-
kled with memories. “So, I grew one. Now, when the kids tug on my beard, I say, ‘Play with it, I don’t mind.’ Sometimes, I give a little wink or wiggle my nose to get the kids closer.” Now, Crane plays the jolly big elf during the annual family Christmas party at his senior residence, Union Villa in Markham. Crane mastered the standard Santa greeting of ‘Ho Ho Ho.’ He would also sing to the children and perform little ditties from his youth. Although he applied to play Santa at local malls or during local parades, he never had the chance and was never paid for Santa service. Instead, he spent years visiting children door-todoor and playing Santa at local Christmas parties. When he was a child, his stocking was filled with candy, oranges and
World record Santa Claus: • 18,112 - largest gathering of people dressed as Santa Claus was achieved in India in December 2014; • 25,104 - largest collection of Santa Claus items, including 2,360 figurines, 2,843 cards and postcards from 33 countries and 241 pins. Canada’s Jean-Guy Laquerre has been collecting Santa stuff since 1988; • 3,939 - most Santa Claus’ distributing gifts simultaneously was achieved in Romania in December 2008. - guinnessworldrecords.com Mike Barrett/Metroland
Unionville resident John Crane is 83 years old and has been playing Santa since he was 19. bananas. “And I thought I hit the gold mine,” he chuckled. While times have changed, blocks, dolls, toys and trains are still popular items he hears from children who sit upon his knee. As old age creeps up,
his Santa days are short and limited. But Christmas time is still about the children, having never had any children of his own. He has three stepchildren and several step-grandchildren.
“I’m a big kid, myself,” he said as he looked up from Santa’s workshop in Union Villa - a puzzle station where he spends most of his time. It was his late mother, Gertrude, who pushed the young Crane to play Santa
at a local Christmas party. This came after years of being tormented by other schoolchildren. Gertrude died shortly after Crane’s first Santa appearance. “She told me I might enjoy it,” he said of his mother. “I did. I kept it up in her memory. When I see a kid smile and say, ‘Thank you’, she is forever in my heart.”

to save time, money and reduce waste For many families, shopping and preparing meals comes with a lot of food waste. On average, York Region households throw away $1,500 worth of food each year. Here are some simple tips to reduce food waste and save time and money:
1
Plan ahead and shop with a list (check your cupboards in advance to avoid buying duplicates)
2
Buy only what you need; bulk buying or buying on sale is only cost effective if the product is actually used
3
Choose recipes you can make ahead, giving you more time with your family and friends
4
Serve smaller portions; preparing or setting out more than they can eat is more food wasted
5
Freeze leftovers to enjoy later; soups, stews, pasta and casseroles freeze well

Study shows inflated government wages ● From page 1 quite bloated.” But residents should consider the wide range of services provided by skilled public sector employees before swallowing a report from a right-leaning organization, said Doug Sheppard, unit chair of Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 905, which represents about 5,000 municipal workers in the region. “The Fraser Institute isn’t exactly a progressive group,” he said. “In terms of our wages, I think our members are paid fairly for the work they do. In the public sector, we have workers that are highly skilled and educated. I think of our paramedics at the region. Highly skilled and you’re putting your life in their hands.” Sheppard also questioned why the Fraser Institute didn’t include the astronomical salaries and bonuses taken home by some corporate CEOs. The study, called “Comparing Government and Private Sector Compensation in Canada”, found government workers earned salaries 10.6 per cent higher on average than comparable workers in 2015, the most recent year of data from Statistics Canada’s labour force survey.
The wage gap took into account differences of workers in the two sectors, such as their age, gender, education, tenure, type of work, industry and occupation, the report said. Government workers also surpass private sector employees in other areas, the study said. For example, 89.3 per cent of public sector workers were covered by a registered pension plan compared to only 23.8 per cent of private sector employees. Government workers retired 2.3 years before their private sector counterparts. Public sector workers took 12.7 personal leave days compared to 7.8 days for private sector employees. Private sector workers were about seven times more likely to be laid off than public sector employees. “With the federal government running a large deficit and provincial and municipal governments across the country looking to control spending, bringing public sector compensation in line with the private sector would reduce financial pressure,” study coauthor Charles Lammam, the institute’s director of fiscal studies, said in a statement. “Of course, governments need to provide competitive compensation to attract qualified employees, but the fact is wages and benefits in the public sec-
tor are out of step with the private sector. Closing the compensation gap would not only help governments reduce spending without affecting services, it would also increase fairness for taxpayers.” The institute promotes a “race to the bottom” mentality, encouraging the slashing of public sector wages and benefits rather than urging better compensation in the private sector, Sheppard said.

Markham council approved its budget for 2017, which brings a 3.46-per-cent tax rate increase over last year. The approved tax rate increase adds about $38 on a home valued at $586,000. Based on the average home value, taxpayers can also expect about $181 in additional taxes in 2017 - $67 from the region’s proposed tax increase, $47 for Markham’s stormwater fee and $30 from the city’s increase in water and wastewater fees. The 2017 budget is $443.34 million,
NOTICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUBMISSION DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION REPORT Highway 407 Widening from Markham Road to Brock Road and New Whites Road (Sideline 26) Interchange 407 ETR Concession Company Limited (407 ETR) is the private sector consortium that has purchased from the Province of Ontario the right and the obligation to develop, design, build, operate, maintain, repair and toll Highway 407 from the Queen Elizabeth Way in the City of Burlington to Brock Road in the City of Pickering. The existing section of Highway 407 that extends from Markham Road in the City of Markham in the west to Brock Road in the City of Pickering in the east is referred to as the East Partial Extension of Highway 407. Based on current and forecast traffic capacity needs, 407 ETR proposes to widen the Highway 407 from Markham Road to just west of Brock Road. The work entails widening of approximately 7.2 km of Highway 407 to the inside from the existing 3 basic lanes to 4 basic lanes in each direction between Markham Road and the York Durham Line; and the inside widening of approximately 6.7 km of the highway between the York Durham Line and Brock Road from its current 2 basic lanes to 3 basic lanes in each direction. The work also entails the design of the Highway 407/Whites Road (Sideline 26) Interchange, including a section of Whites Road from south of the interchange northerly to Highway 7 and the necessary widening of Highway 7 to accommodate the signalized Highway 7/Whites Road intersection. The work that is the subject of this environmental submission is the structures, grading, drainage, granular base, paving and illumination associated with the proposed road widening of Highway 407, including the new interchange at Whites Road. In compliance with Ontario Environmental Assessment Act approval requirements (Order-in-Council Number 1704/98), 407 ETR has prepared a Design and Construction Report (DCR) for the proposed works for submission to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) at least 45 days in advance of construction. The DCR for the construction of the subject Highway 407 East Partial Extension Widening from Markham Road to Brock Road, including the Whites Road interchange is being submitted to the MOECC for placement in the Public Record on December 15, 2016 and is available for review at the MOECC Central Region Office, 5775 Yonge Street, 8th Floor, City of Toronto. A copy of the documentation is also available for public review at the following locations during regular business hours. 407 ETR Customer Service Centre 6300 Steeles Avenue West Woodbridge, ON

City of Pickering, Clerk’s Office 1 The Esplanade South (Pickering Civic Complex), Pickering, ON

which includes $201.8 million in operating costs, $121.2 million in waterworks, $81.5 million in capital projects and $13.6 million in library. Some of the projects proposed for 2017 include 92 acres of new parkland, rail crossing upgrades for the anti-whistle program and expansion of the city’s multi-use pathways. Unionville resident Peter Miasek praised council for its responsible budget, setting aside funds for issues such as the fight against emerald ash borer, rising hydro rates, inflation, storm water management and accessibility requirements. “Those are beyond Markham’s control and yet Markham has to budget for them,” said Miasek, who is also the president of Transport Action Ontario, an organization dedicated to sustainable transportation. “To see this is sound financial planning, just look at the shenanigans down in Toronto.” The debate soon turned to what’s happening south of Steeles Avenue. “We have no other choice to get the revenue to provide services,” Mayor Frank Scarpitti said during this week’s council meeting to approve the budget. “There’s frustration in my voice, because Toronto operates under different rules and has different tools to collect revenue.” Scarpitti urged the province to give municipalities the same tools to boost public coffers as Toronto has, such as land transfer tax, high commercial and industrial tax and road tolls. “We may be a smaller municipality, but our problems are just as complex as (Toronto’s). Life in the GTA is more complex, no matter what municipality,” Scarpitti said. “Toronto should raise money from their taxpayers, not from the 905, to pay for their projects. That’s what people should be upset about.” There’s also the one-time funding often awarded to Toronto, Councillor Don Hamilton said. “We have a prudent, financially responsible budget year after year and we get screwed,” said Hamilton, who voted against the tax rate and water rate increases. “But they are in big trouble, so, they get the funding.” Councillors Colin Campbell and Karen Rea and Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong also voted against the increases.

Although one of the costlier renovations, upgrading the kitchen will pay off in the long run.
3 renovations that offer the best ROI
Whether you plan on reselling in the next few months or in the distant future, these three renovations are the best investments replacing old appliances with new stainless steel fronts. Other great investments are a gas stove, upgrading countertops and refreshing cabinet façades. A simple, cost-effective DIY update is replacing dated hardware, which goes a long way toward making a great first impression. 2. Flooring. Think flooring is beneath you? Taking up the highest square footage of a home, it’s often the first thing to be overlooked — but not by a prospective buyer. When entering a space for the first time, flooring will set the tone of the home’s interior. The most popular option is hardwood throughout, but pre-engineered flooring has also made huge advancements in terms of style, colour and realistic texture options. 3. Exterior. Although what’s on
the inside counts for a lot, impressions are made within seconds — and that also goes for your home. If buyer doesn’t like a home’s curb appeal, they’ll drive right past it and on to the next property. But investing in your home’s exterior — both the front and back of the house — doesn’t have to break the bank. Ensure your landscape is maintained, keep the windows clean and create an outdoor space potential new homeowner will want to use all year long to increase your selling price. If you’re planning a renovation or are thinking of selling, help is available by visiting the Destination Renovation booth at the upcoming GTA Home & Reno Show or National Home Show. Find more information online at torontohomeshows.com.

Got resale on your brain? Renovating is a great way to increase your property’s value before it comes time to sell. But the cost can be challenging, especially if you’re on a budget and want to make sure the projects you choose give you the biggest bang for your buck before you commit to knocking down any walls. If you’re interested in cashing in on the red-hot housing market, here are a few projects worth investing in before the “for sale” sign goes up: 1. Kitchen. The soul of any home, investing in a kitchen refresh can be one the best ways to wow perspective homebuyers. Although one of the costlier renovations, upgrading this space will pay off in the long run as it’s often the focal point of the home. If budgets are tight, you’ll find the biggest return on investment by

Create holiday curbside appeal beyond bright lights
yorkregion.com
adele Gallo**
‘Tis the season to primp your house for that festive time of year. And while holiday lights and tinsel will never go out of style, outdoor winter planters have become a spectacle in their own right. They add the perfect amount of greenery, colour, and ecofriendly cheer to brighten your walkway, front door, or balcony. Follow these easy steps to create curbside appeal with beautiful winter planters. 1. Get inspired. There are over 1000 images of winter gardens online as well as a huge selection of videos from decor mavens revealing their favourite spin on the holiday planter. Before you start your own project, make sure you have a vision of the look you’d like to achieve and double check that the colour and sizing fit with your outdoor space. 2. Start with a solid base. Keep your winter extra green with earth-savvy planters. Crescendo Urns made by Multy Home are a great option. Made using Ontario recycled tire rubber that would otherwise end up in a landfill, this planter is designed to withstand the cold weather. You can also find recycled rubber mulch to fill the base from a variety of manufacturers. This material is ideal because it drains quickly; resists mold, mildew and fungi; and is non-toxic. 3. Create your masterpiece. Consider the climate and the type of foliage that will last throughout the season. Try hardy materials such as evergreen boughs, birch, dogwood, or winterberries. Experiment with heights and textures and add
some non-traditional components to make it your own. 4. Complete the package. Consider additional ways to dress up your outdoors with other earthfriendly decor, such as wreaths made from leftover greenery or even recycled ribbon and corks. Add some function and fashion to your front step with a welcome mat made from recycled tires. If you’re planning on stringing up some lights, just make sure they’re energy efficient. If you are looking to enhance your home, both indoors and out, find creative, eco-friendly solutions on rethinktires.ca.

Do You Suffer From 3. Sensory nerves. These nerves relay information from your skin and muscles back to your spinal cord and brain. The information is then processed to let you feel pain and other sensations. Because nerves are essential to all you do, nerve pain and damage can seriously affect your quality of life. What Are the Symptoms of Nerve Pain and Nerve Interference? With nerve interference there can be an wide array of symptoms. Which ones you may a have depends on the location and type of nerves that are affected. Interference can occur to nerves in your brain and spinal cord. It can also occur in the peripheral nerves, which are located throughout the rest of your body.
yorkregion.com
Your nerve system is involved in everything your body does, from regulating your breathing to controlling your muscles and sensing heat and cold. Because your nerve system is so critical for your health when things go wrong with it you may experience excruciating pain and/or some very strange symptoms...
Autonomic nerve interference/pain may produce the following symptoms: • Too much sweating or too little sweating • Lightheadedness • Dry eyes and mouth • Constipation • Bladder dysfunction There are three types of nerves in the body: • Sexual dysfunction 1. Autonomic nerves. These nerves control the involuntary Interference to motor nerves may produce the following or partially voluntary activities of your body, including heart symptoms: rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature regulation. • Weakness 2. Motor nerves. These nerves control your movements • Muscle atrophy and actions by passing information from your brain and spinal • Twitching, also known as fasciculation • Paralysis cord to your muscles.
Sensory nerve Interference may produce the following symptoms: • Pain • Sensitivity • Numbness • Tingling or prickling • Burning • Problems with positional awareness In some instances, people with nerve interference will have symptoms that indicate interference to two, or even three, different types of nerves. For instance, you might experience weakness and burning of your legs at the same time. To further complicate matters we don’t all develop the same way and different un-expected nerves can cause similar problems. This has made it very difficult to diagnose disorders caused by nerve interference based on which nerve “should” cause what. That is, until now... In Markham/Stouffville, you can get your nerves scanned/ checked for nerve interference at Elite Care Chiropractic. Your invitation for a comprehensive consultation and examination to pinpoint the cause of your nerve interference/pain. All you have to do to receive a thorough diagnostic examination and a comprehensive easy to understand report on your state of health is call 905-554-8444.
